Boston bars bracing for influx of World Cup fans Kickoff time. The games are expected to draw big bar crowds for big matches.
@Alex_Eustice is down with the rapscallions.
With World Cup fever about to hit the Hub, The Greatest Bar is making sure to have plenty of European larger on hand for the next few weeks. “We had the Dutch group here [for the last World Cup] and they come in really strong, all amped up and ready to go,” said Kayla Harrity of The Greatest Bar. “This year we ordered a lot more Heineken because they were all drinking Heineken. We ordered the most Heineken you could ever order.”
With the World Cup — the world’s most popular sporting tournament — getting underway in Brazil today, area bars and restaurants are preparing for the influx of soccer fans with food specials, watch parties and plans to show every game. Harrity said the bar will open hours before it’s regular time to air the games, which they expect to attract hundreds of people. She said the bar hosts Netherlands and England fans, and will be serving authentic Dutch food as well as English favorite, curry and chips. During the last World Cup, The Banshee in Dorchester was packed two to three hours before and after each U.S. match, and owner Ray Butler expects more of the same.
Visit Metro.us for more information on where to watch the World Cup in Boston. “We’re getting emails on a daily basis asking if we’re showing such and such game,” said Butler. “For us, it’s a great month. It’s fantastic.” MICHAEL NAUGHTON @MetroBosMike

A Walsh spokeswoman said the purpose of the Mayor’s Office of Women’s Advancement is to “promote equal rights and equal economic, social, political and educational opportunities for all women and girls throughout Boston.” Walsh also promised the revitalization of the Boston Women’s Commission, which he said will advise him and help city officials fulfill its mission of “attaining full equity for women in all areas of life.” The announcement comes a day after the Boston Globe reported that in Walsh’s first five months, he has hired predominantly men and filled most full-time jobs with white employees. About 59 percent of fulltime hires have been white, and 66 percent are men, according to city data. “Women make up 52 percent of Boston’s population, so there is a social and economic need to ensure equal opportu-

Cantor to leave in GOP stunner Virginia. Cantor was defeated in a primary race by a political rookie backed by the Tea Party. The toppling of Eric Cantor, the No. 2 Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives, left his political party in chaos on Wednesday, as financial markets worried the shakeup might renew messy budget fights that in the past have caused government shutdowns and near credit defaults. Cantor, who has served as House majority leader since 2011, unexpectedly lost Tuesday’s primary election to college economics professor David Brat, a Tea Party activist.
That brought an abrupt halt to the career of a rising star who had his eye on the top House job of Speaker. Cantor is expected to tell his fellow Republicans that he will resign from his leadership job at the end of July, just before the long summer break, aides said. That sparked an intra-party scramble for House leadership positions. But it was still unclear Wednesday when party
elections would be held. Meanwhile, Capitol Hill was buzzing over whether the Tea Party victory could bring Washington back to the showdowns of 2011, 2012 and 2013 over budget deficits and the size of government. Financial analysts feared that the relative political calm that had prevailed since December’s budget deal could be disrupted. REUTERS

Student loan bill fails first hurdle Legislation to allow student loan borrowers to refinance at lower interest rates failed to clear a procedural hurdle in the U.S. Senate on Wednesday, dooming a measure that was
a Democratic priority ahead of November congressional elections. Democrats had said the bill would let holders of both federal and private undergraduate loans — some with rates of 9 percent or higher — to refinance at 3.86 per-
cent. Republicans thought the legislation was too expensive. The bill, championed by liberal-leaning Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, was part of Democrats’ plan this year to rally base supporters ahead of an election that could tip control of the Senate back into Republican hands. REUTERS

Kendrick talks guys, the dating market and boobs It’s hard out there for Anna Kendrick. The “Pitch Perfect star, who split from director Edgar Wright last year, says that she hasn’t been hit on since she made “Up in the Air five years ago. “Honest to God, she insists to Elle magazine. Kendrick has kept a fairly low profile, datingwise, since her breakup. “When I was a teenager, I was an ultra-late bloomer, and my mom would say it was a blessing because it means you never have to wonder if guys are only interested in you because you’ve got boobs, she tells the magazine. “I would have been thrilled if guys were interested in me because of my boobs!

Gomez and Cyrus were all smiles in 2008. / WIREIMAGE
Miley Cyrus wasn’t too smiley during the weekend. During a concert in Italy Sunday night, she showed the world that she isn’t a big fan of Selena Gomez. Performing her song ‘FU’ (Yup, the two letters are short for you-know-what) she was reportedly holding up a cardboard cutout of Selena Gomez, and at some point she threw it out to the audience. It should be said that the singer snatched it from someone in the audience in the first place, but considering which song she was singing at the time, it sounds like there was a hidden message there (or not even that hidden, right?). We don’t know where this outburst of hatred comes from, but the two singers have both dated Nick Jonas from The Jonas Brothers, but that was a loooong time ago. (Just like the photo we’ve included of the two together in 2008!) Having a hard time letting go, Miley? Or is this just another way of distancing yourself from Disney? We already got that when you started sticking your tongue out. All. The. Time! LASSE E.

@Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu
With her success as a musician taken care of, Taylor Swift is reportedly shifting her focus to film, according to Radar Online. “Taylor badly wants to be a movie star. She’s determined to prove herself as an actress and not simply a singer who dabbles in movies, a source says. “She’s finished her new album and is now busy reading every script she can get her hands on. The clock is ticking, and Taylor’s reps are intent on having her locked into a potential breakout role before the end of summer. While she made a cameo in 2010’s “Valentine’s Day and will appear this summer in “the Giver, she’s on the hunt for a lead role. “Taylor is now under pressure to make her first major movie deal, the source explains. “She has been offered the moon — technically, about $10 million — to make a concert film in the vein of Justin Bieber’s and Katy Perry’s efforts, but Taylor’s policy of aiming high has put the kibosh on those plans. She doesn’t just want to be known as a singer, so she’s trying to get aligned with some high-profile, nonmusical productions.

‘22 Jump Street’ Worried that this followup to the 2012 desecration of the ’80s Johnny Depp show will be a weak sequel? So is the film! This time undercover cops Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum go to college. But instead of endless jabs at beer pong, most of the jokes mock the very idea of sequels, especially ones that repeat the first one or blow up the budget to ludicrous sizes. This is the second film of 2014 by directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, after “The Lego Movie.” They’re on a roll.

‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ Where “22 Jump Street” mocks repeating a surprise hit, this sequel to the lighthearted animated picture about Viking kids with American accents riding on cute dragons does something completely (or somewhat completely) different. It goes weirdly dark, with our heroes (led by Jay Baruchel) fighting a gang of evil dragon kidnappers. Cate Blanchett also does some very serious voice work.

‘We Are the Best!’ Lukas Moodysson made one of the great, completely non-condescending teen films — 2000’s “Show Me Love” — and his latest does the same for tomboyish tweens. Three girls with short hair start a punk band, and if their band isn’t the best then the film kind of is.
‘Obvious Child’ The hoped-for breakout film for Jenny Slate (a “Saturday Night Live” alum also known as sociopathic Mona-Lisa on “Parks and Recreation”), this indie comedy stars the actress as a woman who is dumped, fired and knocked up. Another ‘Game of Thrones’ casualty Oberyn Martell. Pedro Pascal chats about his brief but memorable stint on HBO’s bloody saga. Pedro Pascal may have filmed his last scene as Oberyn Martell months ago, but his voice still carries a raw edge when speaking about his character’s death. The 39-year-old actor only arrived in Westeros at the beginning of this season, but his charismatic portrayal of the scheming — and sexually liberal — Martell made him a favorite among fans. Alas, in the eighth episode of the season, which ends this Sunday, the Red Viper of Dorne picked a fight he couldn’t win, ending with the series’ most gruesome death scene to date. (Let’s just say his strongman opponent wasn’t called The Mountain for nothing.) We caught up with Pascal after the heart-wrenching episode to talk Oberyn’s legacy, feeling relieved at the fan response and his “South American shame. What will stay with you about your experience on “Game of Thrones? It was definitely the best part I’ve ever played, and it was the best writing that I’ve ever gotten to do on television. The creative experience of getting to sink your teeth into a great character in a blockbuster television show was something that I’ll never forget. What makes it such a success, I think, is ultimately really good storytelling, so getting to do David [Benioff]’s and Dan [Weiss]’ writing in that world, getting into the skin of that character and being in Michele Clapton’s costumes — and all the attention that it gets you, that’s really special. Oberyn Martell liked to stir up trouble. Do you share that element of mischief? Possibly! Many of my friends would probably accuse me of being mischievous. I think that for any actor, mischief is sort of a delicious thing to play: What exactly motivates
Natalie Dormer, who plays Margaery Tyrell on “Game of Thrones, enjoyed having Pascal around, too. / WIREIMAGE Q&A
What’s been your experience with fans? People have been really sweet, very enthusiastic and really supportive. And it’s an enormous relief — [Oberyn] was a big undertaking for me, and one that I was pretty nervous about doing because he’s such an extravagant character, and I really wasn’t sure how it would be received. And it’s nice to be back in New York, where I’ve been for 20 years, and have a stranger on the subway start smiling and giving me a thumbs up and congratulations, or “I’m so sorry you’re dead. It’s a lot of fun.
creating chaos? Those are always really fun things to discover. The role also had some great moments of levity. I love comedy. I think comedy is a very special challenge for actors, because I think the key to making it work is to be as truthful as anything. So it
takes a lot of skill; I find comedy to be more challenging than drama in most cases. It’s always fun — no matter what the project is, no matter what the role — to find moments of humor in characters. Humor can be such a reflection of truths and ironies, and the complexities of reality can always translate in such humorous ways. The World Cup is under way — as a Chilean, are you a soccer fan? I’m very unskilled at soccer, it’s sort of my South American shame. But of course, I’m behind Chile all the way. What’s next for you? I will be going down to Colombia to shoot a series for Netflix called “Narcos. It’s about the rise and fall of Pablo Escobar, and I’ll be playing a living DEA agent, Javier Pena, who was sent to Colombia on a U.S. mission to capture and ultimately kill him. The season finale of “Game of Thrones airs Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO. EVA KIS @thisiskis

DATING
Tips for avoiding online dating burnout
Relationships. Here’s how to avoid becoming overwhelmed by online dating.
It’s a familiar story to anyone who has ventured out into the world of online dating: You want to meet someone new, your friends are urging you to “put yourself out there” and so you finally sign up for your site of choice and throw yourself into the fray. After a few w busy weeks of messaging and coffee dates, you suddenly come to a stark realization: You’re exhausted. Because there are so many options out there, and because it’s so easy to do from your mobile device, it doesn’t take much for the whole process to quickly become overwhelming. Since 2007, online dating coach Virginia Roberts has been working with singles to guide them through the ups and downs of dating online through her work as The Heartogapher. She shares tips on how to online daters can avoid burning out.
Know which sites work for you Remember that each dating site has its own culture and vibe, and one may be a better fit for you than others. “Only return to the sites that give you results,” advises Roberts.
“Don’t feel like you constantly have to check the sites where you aren’t really getting responses. Go with what’s working for you.”
Don’t overthink the process
“You want to emulate behavior that is low-level output,” she says, meaning that you don’t always have to send out detailed, crafted messages at first, but instead can just hint at your interest. es “With Tinder, you y should swipe right a lot [to r indicate you like i the t person] and not n overthink it. You Yo can apply that same sam philosophy to OkCupid by rating people five stars. When you wink at somebody on Match, it’s a way to let them know that you are interested. You should do that for people who meet your minimum criteria and put that out there very liberally.”
You don’t HAVE to reply to everyone “When you are new to online dating, many people blast a lot of likes out there into the universe,” notes Roberts. She gives the example of starring or swiping right on 40 profiles. “If you don’t respond to all 40 people, that’s par for the course in online dating,” she points out. “The culture kind of expects that.” “You can always go back

Pace yourself “It’s a good thing to take breaks,” Roberts points out. “Rather than going on a bunch of different dates all at once, you should spread your dates out further out than you think you need them to be.”
Remember, online dating is supposed to be fun. / FUSE Tip
Manage your messages Don’t let dating mobile alerts and a constant stream of emails stress you out. Roberts also suggests that users utilize email filters and other tools to send your dating messages to a designated folder. That way, you can look at your messages when you are ready to do so. “Remember, you are allowed to control this,” says Roberts. “Make it manageable.”
to that person later. You don’t have to feel overwhelmed.” she says.
Remember, online dating is just one option to meet people “Online dating should just be one tool in your toolbox,” says Roberts. “Keep in mind that it is not your only option. Find groups, activities and meetups that are built around things that you would do anyway. ... You’ll start to value every interaction over time,” she adds. LAKSHMI GANDHI @LakshmiGandhi

‘Slow Focus.’ For this instrumental duo, learning to communicate without words is essential. The members of F— Buttons choose their words carefully. Their songs don’t usually have any, and multi-instrumentalist Benjamin John Power says that even choosing song titles is tricky territory for he and Andrew Hung, his partner in sound. “Once Andy and I are at a point where we’ve decided a track is finished — it’s usually
when we feel like it’s conjured up enough mental imagery for it to be an actual thing with some narrative and shape — [we] really enjoy the practice of just discussing how a track has made us both feel,” he says, before catching himself. “Although it might be a little bit of a double standard to actually name a track, because as I’ve said before, we don’t like to push any kind of mental imagery upon the listener — it’s nice for them to be able to make their own minds up about what the song is saying. Sometimes they’d like to make it relevant to their own experiences, but I think it frees us up to be able to operate and tell which is
which.” Their most recent album, “Slow Focus,” which came out last July, certainly evokes a lot of mental imagery. And many of the titles they’ve assigned to these instrumentals prove effective in that purpose as well, with tunes such as “Brainfreeze” and “Stalker,” which make the listener feel like he or she has sipped a slushie too quickly or has taken to nefariously pursuing somebody. But if the two are so hesitant to use words, how do they talk about the layers upon layers of sound that they are creating together? “We’ve been working with each other for 10 years now, and we’ve gotten to a point
where we don’t necessarily verbalize our communication,” says Power. “It’s a very heavy jamming process when we’re writing, so you can almost just feel if somebody is feeling a certain texture that we’ve decided to utilize in a jam. It’s based on a feeling and exploring within a sound. “We know each other well enough to determine if the other person is into something or not,” he explains. “For a F— Buttons track to be a F—- Buttons track, we both have to be present.” PAT HEALY @metrousmusic
pat.healy@metro.us
We can’t resist asking Power about the name of the band and how it may have presented a few problems over the years — such as, say, when the band are profiled in a free daily newspaper that needs to be mindful that people of any age might pick up an edition. He says that the wise words often attributed to Dr. Seuss apply: “Those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.” “I’d be lying if I were to say that it hadn’t been a slight detriment at certain points, but we’ve been operating for 10 years, so people, if they feel they want to censor it for whatever reason — like they can’t put a poster up in their town, or mention a song on the radio — they usually just self-censor. Quite often, we’ll just be referred to as F— Buttons,” he says, this time doing his own selfcensoring. “That’s what they did in the Olympics, and that didn’t cause too much of a problem.”

HABLA COCKTAILS? What’s one of the finest things in life? Sitting on a patio in the summer with a bottle of Manzanilla sherry, Sean Sullivan and I agree. The bartender is explaining the concept of the new Straight Law bar to me over the phone and making me thirsty. Taberna de Haro chef and owner Deborah Hansen leaned on Sullivan and fellow Drink bar vet Will Thompson for help conceptualizing and launching the offshoot of her long-running Spanish restaurant in Brookline a couple months back. While Taberna de Haro has been open for over 15 years, it expanded into a second room about two years ago. The idea was to turn it into a Spanishstyle bar, but bringing Sullivan and Thompson in to help out with planning has reinvigorated the concept. “Will gave me a call and said, ‘Do you want to do a gin and sherry bar in Brookline?’’ Sullivan said. “I thought he said Brooklyn, because it definitely sounds like something that would be in Brooklyn.
Take a quick vacation to Spain in Taberna de Haro’s new bar, Straight Law. / DEREK KOUYOUMJIAN
From the jump, it sounded a little too good to be true.” Hansen has long been accumulating an abundance of sherries and Spanish wines, and had already amassed a big collection of gins, so the foundation for a shift into a more cocktail-centric concept was already in place. They stumbled across an old sherry and gin cocktail called Straight Law, from which they took the name. If you go

Aside from its natural pairing ability with the Spanish food found on the menu at Taberna de Haro, Sullivan says guests might appreciate sherry’s lower alcohol potential. “It’s a fortified wine, but low octane enough that you can be out, eating a meal, and you can have sherry, and you’re not on your ass afterward.” The sherry cocktails he recommends to newcomers at the bar include the Straight Law cocktail, which is 2:1 manzanilla — a fino, or dry, lightly savory style — with gin. Although it’s a dry martini style cocktail, it’s “not necessarily spirit-forward; it’s bracing and briny and bright.” On the other end of the spectrum, you might try the Artist Special. Inspired by an old Parisian whiskey cocktail, it takes
Spanish brandy as a base with Palo Cortado — somewhere between an amontillado and an oloroso sherry — lemon and grenadine. “It’s a stirred citrus cocktail, which is a little odd, and the end result is tart, but a little sweet, kind of fruity and grapey,” Sullivan said. “I thought it would be more of like an industry hit, but it’s been a pretty resounding success. Any time you can get someone a little outside of what their normal comfort zone is, it’s super cool.” Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author.

Building the World Cup’s most expensive roster Metro rounded up the highest-paid players in Brazil to form a super team regardless of country affiliation. EDGAR SANCHEZ sports@metro.us
If money were no object, what would the dream team with the costliest World Cup players look like? Just shy of a billion dollars to be precise: $900.8 million. You won’t find any American players on the pitch, however. The United States carries players making less than $100,000 per year in the MLS, all the way up to the Seattle Sounders’ Clint Dempsey at $6 million a season. We broke down an 11-man roster using only players in the 2014 World Cup, which begins Thursday. And we did it according to a typical 4-3-3 formation. Here is the dream team formed of World Cup players with the highest market values, according to soccer information website Transfermarkt.

3 Doubront working his way back
Pitcher Felix Doubront allowed two runs in 4 2/3 innings Tuesday night for Triple-A Pawtucket as he slowly works his way back from a left shoulder strain. With Brandon Workman’s emergence in Boston’s starting rotation, Doubront could possibly be bumped to the bullpen upon his return to the Sox. “We’re not crossing that bridge yet,” Red Sox manager John Farrell told WEEI.com.

What are the chances?
Q&A with Chris Albright: Breaking down US’ chances
Quoted
“Our weakness is an inexperienced back line. They’re going to really have to come together as a unit and prove themselves on the biggest stage.” Albright
While the World Cup begins Thursday, the U.S. won’t get a chance to take the pitch until Monday against Ghana. We spoke to 2006 Team USA member Chris Albright about the 2014 team’s chances in Brazil. How do you like Team USA’s chances in the so-called “Group of Death”? I think that the game against
Ghana is a must-win game for the U.S. That will really dictate the success of this team. They won’t have to recover in a hard matchup against Portugal or Germany.
Albright says the U.S. is going to have to be lucky. GETTY IMAGES
What do you view as this team’s biggest strengths? I think the team’s strength is its American spirit, as cliche as that sounds. They
have an underdog mentality and understand that they’re playing against teams that have a much longer and stronger soccer pedigree. You’ve had a chance to practice with and play against Clint Dempsey over the years, how will he need to establish himself in these games?
Clint’s one of those guys that doesn’t necessarily have to play great for us, but you’re looking for Clint to make a play. Whether that’s a header off of a corner or making a dramatic play in the box, that’s something we’ll need from him. Do you think U.S. manager Jurgen Klinsmann saying that it’s “unrealistic” for the U.S. to win was justified? I don’t necessarily love that comment, but Jurgen’s won World Cups himself, so who am I to question him? JEFF MCMENAMIN

Anthony decision to come soon
The Red Sox are back at Fenway Park Thursday for the first time since June 1 and will host Cleveland (7 p.m., NESN). Jon Lester (6-7, 3.52 ERA) will look to rebound from a poor outing against Detroit last Saturday. Josh Tomlin (4-2, 3.12 ERA) gets the start for Cleveland.
Haverhill, Massachusetts, native Noah Vonleh worked out for the Celtics Wednesday in Waltham as he projects as a top 10 pick in the NBA draft. The Celtics own the No. 6 pick in the June 26 draft. Vonleh averaged 11.3 points and nine rebounds per game at Indiana in 2013-14.
Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony has until June 23 to opt in or out of his contract with the team. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith said Tuesday that Anthony and Miami’s LeBron James have “expressed the mutual desire to play together before their careers end.”

HAVE YOUR ANTIDEPRESSANT MEDICATIONS STOPPED WORKING? Researchers at MGH are studying the use of a low dose of a marketed medication for people taking antidepressants that are no longer having the same therapeutic benefit. Participants must have received antidepressant treatment, felt better for at least 3 months with this treatment, and then begun to feel depressed again. Medication is provided at no cost. Compensation is provided for attending study visits.
Place your bets World Cup. We take a look at the teams in this soccer tournament that you should bet your house on. The World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world. So you know what that means. It’s the biggest gambling opportunity in the world! We’re going to assume you don’t belong to a massive Asian match-fixing syndicate, so you could probably use some advice if you are looking to lay down a few bucks (recreationally, of course) on the World Cup.
Friendly wagers All odds courtesy of Bovada.lv: •

Top goal scorer: Here’s a fun prop bet. The obvious choice is Lionel Messi (7-1) or Neymar (10-1), but we like Uruguay’s Luis Suarez (18-1). Germany’s Lukas Podolski (66-1) is an enticing choice as well.
•
USA top goal scorer: Are you a believer in Jozy Altidore (9-2) returning to form? Or do you stick with the favorite, Clint Dempsey (9-4)? We like Michael Bradley at 12-1.
The favorites

Brazil (3-1), Argentina (4-1) Germany (11-2) and Spain (6-1) are your clear top 4 in the favorites category. Most experts are picking the host country — that would be Brazil — to claim their first Cup since 2002. They have the home-
The Moneymakers: England (22-1) hasn’t won a World Cup since 1966, a piece of information every child in the country is taught at birth. The Netherlands (25-1) are another great choice to make some money. They sit perfectly between favorite and long shot.
field advantage, and maybe the most-exciting young star of the competition, Neymar. But there isn’t much money to be made in picking the clear favorite. In fact, none of the favorites are usually worth betting on if you’re actually looking to make money. Put money on Spain — the defending World Cup champs — if you must pick a favorite.
The dark horses Yep, we’re putting the United States (100-1) firmly in this category. The best chance the U.S. has to get out of the group stage is to beat Ghana comfortably and draw with either Portugal or Germany and pray they advance on goal differential (or total goals if that fails). Another really deep dark horse to put some money on is Nigeria (250-1). The Super Eagles are the defending Africa Cup champions. MARK OSBORNE @MetroNYSports
