Strippers drugged, scammed men: DEA Crime. Authorities said the women ran up as much as $50,000 on the men’s cards after drugging them. A group of New York City strippers drugged rich men and scammed them out of tens of thousands of dollars, authorities said on Wednesday. Four men, including a doctor and a lawyer, were targeted between September and December of last year, authorities said. The strippers allegedly spiked their drinks and drove them to strip clubs where they were too wasted to stop more than $200,000 in credit card charges, officials said. Authorities with the Drug Enforcement Agency and NYPD arrested four women this week on charges including grand larceny and assault. A strip club manager also faces charges. Samantha Barbash, 40, was identified as the suspected ringleader of the crew. Her lawyer, Stephen Murphy, said his client denies the charges. “She’s never stolen anything,” Murphy said. “She’s not guilty.”

“The defendants were banking on the victims being too afraid to contact the police, but as the indictment and arrests show, they made a serious miscalculation.” Samantha Barbash, 40, was allegedly the ringleader of the strippers. / DEA Fuzzy memory The men woke up in their beds with few memories of the encounters, authorities said. •

Officials said an undercover investigation revealed the women met the men in New York area bars on the pretense of dates or trawled through bars for targets. The strippers impaired them with Molly, a form of Ecstasy, tranquilizers or cocaine, according to federal authorities, sometimes drugging the men without their consent. The men were then

Q&A

Stripper: Case isn’t the norm The allegations in the bust are so uncommon the case “sounded like a movie,” said Maria, a 28-year-old stripper, using an alias for privacy. Metro spoke with Maria about working at a local strip club.

How long have you been a stripper? I’ve been in the sex industry for the last seven years on and off. I got started in college to pay for student loans when there weren’t a lot of high-paying jobs in New York. Have you ever heard of a scam like this? No, never. I think there’s this inherent distrust, where people believe there are strippers who want all of your money, but that’s not true. But you want clients to spend money? Yes — encouraging guys to get dances, go to the private room, things like that increase your earnings. But we don’t encourage people to get drunk, ’cause no one wants a drunk client. Is it common for men to spend this much? At a high-end club in New York City, spending tens and tens of thousands is not common, but like $10,000? I wouldn’t be shocked.

New Yorkers aren’t wild about banning horse carriages — but they’re less convinced about ferrets, a new poll found. Most New York City voters don’t think horsedrawn carriages should be banned, but they’re divided about allowing pet ferrets, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday. The new administration is considering loosening a 15-year-old ban on ferrets. Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office is also looking into a range of options to remove carriage horses off city streets. Safety. De Blasio announced that security cameras are coming to public housing. After years of what officials call bureaucratic delays, six public housing developments will soon get security cameras — including the building where a child was stabbed to death June 1. The New York City Housing Authority also said Wednesday it would install cameras at 49 locations using $27 million in

City Council money by the end of 2014. Mayor Bill de Blasio admitted the city failed to make the camera installation a priority in his first six months and over former Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s tenure. He toured the Boulevard Houses in East New York on Wednesday morning as workers began to install security cameras at 845 Schenck Ave., where 6-year-old Prince Joshua “P.J. Avitto was fatally stabbed and Mikayla Capers, 7, was critically wounded. System is proposed for online voting in elections Democracy. The council bill would accommodate absentee and military ballots. A politician wants to put city elections on the Web to increase voter turnout. Legislation introduced by Bronx Councilman Fernando Cabrera on Wednesday would require an online voting system where absentee and military ballots could be cast in certain municipal elections. A spokeswoman for Cabrera said the system, which would not initially be available for all voters, represents a “baby step.” “Many facets of life are completed online and voting should not be exclud-

ed, provided the necessary security measures,” Cabrera said in a statement. The idea of online voting worries Neal Rosenstein, government reform coordinator of the New York Public Interest Research Group. “There’s a ton of folks who say that the system wouldn’t be secure,” he said. “Public confidence in the election process is the most important thing.” To help military and absentee voters, Rosenstein instead suggested instant runoff voting or moving local and state primaries to June. Cantor to leave in GOP stunner Virginia. Cantor was defeated in a primary race by a political rookie backed by the Tea Party. The toppling of Eric Cantor, the No. 2 Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives, left his political party in chaos on Wednesday, as financial markets worried the shakeup might renew messy budget fights that in the past have caused government shutdowns and near credit defaults. Cantor, who has served as House majority leader since 2011, unexpectedly lost Tuesday’s primary election to college economics professor David Brat, a Tea Party activist. That brought an abrupt halt to the career of a rising star who had his eye on the top House job of Speaker.

Cantor is expected to tell his fellow Republicans that he will resign from his leadership job at the end of July, just before the long summer break, aides said. That sparked an intra-party scramble for House leadership positions. But it was still unclear We d n e s day when

party elections would be held. Meanwhile, Capitol Hill was buzzing over whether the Tea Party victory could bring Washington back to the showdowns of 2011, 2012 and 2013 over budget deficits and the size of government. Financial analysts feared that the relative political calm that had prevailed since December’s budget deal could be disrupted. REUTERS

Lawmakers. Some say the administration violated its policy of not negotiating with terrorists.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Wednesday defended the U.S. decision to trade five Taliban leaders at Guantanamo for war prisoner Bowe Bergdahl, insisting it was the right move but admitting failure to tell lawmakers hurt trust with Congress. Hagel told the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee that the administration felt a growing sense of urgency about freeing Bergdahl in recent weeks due to concerns that his health was deteriorating and warnings from Qatari intermediaries that “time was not on our side.”

“His conduct will be judged on facts, not hearsay, posturing, charges or innuendo.” Hagel “We grew increasingly concerned that any delay, or any leaks, could derail the deal and further

endanger Sergeant Bergdahl,” Hagel said at the sometimes contentious hearing. “We were told by Qataris that a leak would end the negotiations for Bergdahl’s release.” Lawmakers have sharply criticized the Obama administration for freeing the five Taliban leaders held at Guantanamo prison without giving them 30 days notice as required by law. App. Breathalyzer selfies paint a picture of US alcohol intake The first data from breathalyzer selfies — measurements of bloodalcohol content by a new smartphone app — show that users drank the most on the weekend of the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. San Francisco-based breathalyzer manufacturer BACtrack reported on Wednesday that the highest average bloodalcohol content (BAC) from April 2013 to April 2014 was registered on Saturday, June 22, at 0.115 percent. The legal definition for drunk driving is 0.08 percent. The data shed light on drinking patterns, which can guide highway patrols and others determining when to focus on drunkdriving enforcement. But the primary purpose of the $149.99 BACtrack Mobile, which consists of a breathalyzer that sends readings via Bluetooth to a smartphone

and was introduced in 2013, is to raise people’s awareness of how drinking affects their BAC and therefore causes impairment, said BACtrack founder and Chief Executive Officer Keith Nothacker. The mobile app is intended to let users check their blood-alcohol content before getting behind the wheel, but 15 percent of the 100,000-plus tests were on friends and others. That seemed wise: Tests on friends found an average BAC of 0.085, while selfies averaged 0.066. The geography of drinking also offered some surprises. Users in Montana and South Dakota had the highest average BAC, at 0.101 percent, while the lowest were in New Hampshire (0.012), Delaware (0.027) and Utah (0.031), where the dominant Mormon Church forbids alcohol consumption. Rebels take Saddam’s hometown of Tikrit Tikrit. The militants occupied the provincial government headquarters. Sunni rebels from an al Qaeda splinter group overran the Iraqi city of Tikrit on Wednesday and closed in on the biggest oil refinery in the country, making further gains in their rapid military advance against the Shiite-led government in Baghdad. The threat to the Baiji refinery comes after militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) seized the northern city of Mosul, Quoted

The fall of Mosul, Iraq’s second biggest city, is a blow to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki’s attempts to defeat the militants, who have seized territory in Iraq over the past year following the withdrawal of U.S. forces. Having also taken two small towns north of Baghdad, Dhiluiya and Yathrib, the insurgents are in control of between 10 and 15 percent of Iraqi territory, excluding Kurdistan, and have led many Iraqis to fear they have the capital, Baghdad, in their sights. Security sources said ISIL militants on Wednesday drove more than 60 vehicles into Tikrit, the home town of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, which lies about 100 miles north of Baghdad. “Our forces were caught by surprise, they never expected ISIL would

OMG! The auction is on for world’s largest video game collection The certified holder of a Guinness World Record for the largest collection of video games is ready to put them on the market. Michael Thomasson’s haul of more than 11,000 games with no repeats is up for grabs on GameGavel.com, for the current figure of $700,500. With the auction set to close on Sunday, the 43-year-old from Buffalo, New York, tells Metro his reasons behind selling and why he’s started collecting video games again. What are you expecting to get for your collection? I don’t know what to expect but I’m told the value is about $700,000. My collection is pristine: I’ve been running games stores for twenty-something years, so I would have the choice of the copies and I have over 2,600 games that are factory-sealed. Are you going to splash the cash on a new house? No, I’m a pretty simple man. I have some family that has some needs that I’m going to help out with. I’m going to get my daughter into a better school, and I would like my wife

First of all, I’ll pay the bills and pay off the mortgage and do the responsible things, but hopefully there’s enough left over so I can enjoy some of it, too. You already started a new collection? I’ve started buying back my favorites [duplicates of what’s in the Guinness collection]. When I come across them in good shape and for a fair price, I buy them. So how many rooms does your collection take up? One primary game room, a secondary room and there are pieces and parts of games all over the house. EDWARD THOMPSON / MWN

The clock is ticking, and Taylor’s reps are intent on having her locked into a potential breakout role before the end of summer.” While she made a cameo in 2010’s “Valentine’s Day” and will appear this summer in “the Giver,” she’s on the hunt for a lead role. “Taylor is now under pressure to make her first major movie deal,” the

On the issues

JENNY SLATE The “Obvious Child” star talks wasted youth and why her latest film isn’t an “abortion comedy.”

THE ROARING TWENTIES Jenny Slate — “Saturday Night Live” alum and the woman behind “Marcel the Shell” — takes the lead in “Obvious Child,” an indie comedy in which she plays a late-20s New York City native who is dealing with what could be her worst Valentine’s Day yet. The events of the day include an appointment to get an abortion, an aspect of the film that’s been stealing most of the focus. It’s something Slate is not thrilled about, but also totally cool with. JENNY SLATE PLAYS A FLOUNDERING COMIC WHO GETS FIRED, DUMPED AND KNOCKED UP IN “OBVIOUS CHILD.” GETTY IMAGES

“Obvious Child” manages to capture an authentic look at a stage of life that we don’t see closely examined very often in film for some reason. I know, it’s strange. People seem to think of the late 20s as, like, those are the go-getters

There have been happier days for Jenny Slate in “Obvious Child.” CHRIS TEAGUE

and people who are too young to say, like, “Get your life together.” But, in fact, I think the late 20s are really, really tough. They were really tough for me. I would never go back to that. Really? Sort of. Nobody told me that my 20s would be a surprise second adolescence, you know?

And also, you’re getting to the point where you’re like, “I should have a career formed now, right?” And it just takes longer than that. There’s also an incorrect assertion that personal development should be finished by that point, and that’s untrue. That’s 100 percent wrong. It almost feels weird to think how much people would previously be expected to have figured out by 25. Yeah, like what the f—? In eight years, starting at 22 to 30, I’m going to have to get all that s— together — and half of it I don’t even want. No! I’m sure if you’re in a field that has more structure, maybe you are more settled by that point. But freak-outs are allowed and normal. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

The A-word Are you getting tired of people referring to this as “the abortion movie”? Yeah, because it isn’t a comedy about abortion. It’s a romantic comedy with a modern story in which a woman has a safe and regret-free procedure. That’s surprisingly rare, considering how abortion is usually dealt with in film and on TV. It’s important, I think, to examine and express the idea that even though a choice is made and a choice is clear, that it’s really complex even after the choice is made. Those more nuanced situations are where you can find a lot of emotion, and they’re what makes a story relatable and interesting. To have faith in a story where a woman has an abortion and it’s not a trauma or a victory but rather just an aspect of her life and something that adds to her personal development — to trust that your audiences might be satisfied with that if you examine it thoughtfully is a really good feeling. It doesn’t even feel like that much of a risk to take, but it does feel like a necessity right now. If we’re thinking of this story, we should tell it. But you’re right, it’s not what this movie is “about.” Yeah. But I get it. And honestly I would much rather people talk about it than not talk about it, and if people are going to say, “It’s the THIS,” the only thing that will happen is that people will show up to the movie and realize that it’s many things and not just one.

‘22 Jump Street’ Worried that this follow-up to the 2012 desecration of the ’80s Johnny Depp show will be a weak sequel? So is the film! This time undercover cops Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum go to college. But instead of endless jabs at beer pong, most of the jokes mock the very idea of sequels, especially ones that repeat the first one or blow up the budget to ludicrous sizes.

2

‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ Where “22 Jump Street” mocks repeating a surprise hit, this sequel to the lighthearted animated picture about Viking kids with American accents riding on cute dragons does something completely different. It goes weirdly dark, with our heroes (led by Jay Baruchel) fighting a gang of evil dragon kidnappers. Cate Blanchett also does some very serious voice work.

‘We Are the Best!’ Lukas Moodysson made one of the great, completely noncondescending teen films — 2000’s “Show Me Love” — and his latest does the same for tomboyish tweens. Three girls start a punk band, and if their band isn’t the best, then the film kind of is.

5

‘Obvious Child’ The hoped-for breakout film for Jenny Slate (“Saturday Night Live”), this indie comedy stars the actress as a woman who is dumped, fired and knocked up. The Valentine’s Day abortion she schedules is handled with surprising and refreshing casualness.

Real life. The Human Rights Watch Film Festival prowls the globe for the big (and not yet big) issues. There’s a world of difference between last year’s “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and “Nelson Mandela: The Myth and Me. The former is a stodgy, endless-seeming biopic that does little but valorize an already established titan. The latter is an essayistic documentary that uses the South African leader as a jumpingoff point to explore actual issues. It addresses the concept of Mandela as a figure and asks all the tough questions, including what exactly did famous, Western celebrities seek when they took selfies with him? Khalo Matabane’s restlessly curious doc is one of many like it in the annual Human Rights Watch Film Festival, which since 2003 has toured the globe with films that try to challenge viewers rather than merely appeal to armchair liberalism. In “Return to Homs, we witness Talal Derki’s first-person account of the Syrian Civil War, which started in 2011. But unlike “The Square, about the Egyptian Revolution, there are few spots for celebration. The rebellion is quickly pounded into tiny

Here are some tips to avoid becoming overwhelmed by online dating It’s a familiar story to anyone who has ventured into the world of online dating: You want to meet someone new, so you finally sign up for your site of choice and throw yourself into the fray. After a few busy weeks of messaging and coffee dates, you come to the stark realization that you’re exhausted. Since 2007, online dating coach Virginia Roberts, aka “The Heartogapher, has been working with singles to guide them through the world of dating online. Rangers keep dream alive with Game 4 win Stanley Cup Final. The breaks finally fell New York’s way as they avoided a sweep and returned the series to L.A.

What went right ...

3 SPORTS

HENRIK LUNDQVIST

The Rangers are still alive — and they have Henrik Lundqvist to thank. Lundqvist was spectacular as he made 40 saves in the Rangers’ 2-1 win over the Kings in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final Wednesday night at the Garden. Game 5 is Friday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The Kings still lead the best-of-seven series, 3-1. The Rangers have come back from a 3-1 series deficit in these playoffs once already, beating the Penguins in the Metropolitan Division finals. Benoit Pouliot and Martin St. Louis scored for the Rangers. Dustin Brown scored the Kings’ lone goal. With the Rangers holding onto a 2-1 lead to start the third, Lundqvist was spectacular as he made 15 saves, many from around his net. Pouliot opened the scoring 7:25 into the game with a tip of John Moore’s point shot, just as Willie

Long live the King When he met with reporters Wednesday, Henrik Lundqvist said he felt good about the technical aspects of his game. More than 24 hours later, the Rangers’ franchise goaltender put on a virtuoso performance. Lundqvist was stellar throughout, especially in a third period in which his team was outshot 15-1.

Mitchell’s high-sticking penalty expired. The Rangers had the slimmest of leads, and if not for Anton Stralman’s stick, would have lost it four minutes later. With the Rangers down a man due to Mats Zuccarello’s delay of game penalty, a diving Stralman prevented a goal by sweeping the puck across the

goal line with his stick. The lead grew to 2-0 when St. Louis scored 6:27 into the second period. It was the third game the Rangers had a two-goal lead in the series, but this time they held on. DENIS GORMAN @DenisGorman sports@metro.us

Shifting lines Alain Vigneault modified the line combinations in Game 4, promoting Carl Hagelin to the top line, having Dominic Moore center Chris Kreider and Martin St. Louis and dropping Brad Richards to the fourth line.

3

All the breaks The Rangers bemoaned all the bad luck they’d had in the series heading into Game 4, but finally got some in their favor. None was bigger than Derek Stepan somehow keeping a puck out of the net with just 1:11 remaining.

Q&A with Chris Albright: Breaking down US’ chances

Quoted

“Our weakness is an inexperienced back line. They’re going to really have to come together as a unit and prove themselves on the biggest stage.”

While the World Cup begins Thursday, the U.S. won’t get a chance to take the pitch until Monday against Ghana. We spoke to 2006 Team USA member Chris Albright about the 2014 team’s chances in Brazil.

That will really dictate the success of this team. They won’t have to recover in a hard matchup against Portugal or Germany.

underdog mentality and understand that they’re playing against teams that have a much longer and stronger soccer pedigree.

How do you like Team USA’s chances in the socalled “Group of Death”? I think that the game against Ghana is a mustwin game for the U.S.

What do you view as this team’s biggest strengths? I think the team’s strength is its American spirit, as cliche as that sounds. They have an

Clint’s one of those guys that doesn’t necessarily have to play great for us, but you’re looking for Clint to make a play. Whether that’s a header off of a corner or making a dramatic play in the box, that’s something we’ll need from him. Do you think U.S. manager Jurgen Klinsmann saying that it’s “unrealistic” for the U.S. to win was justified? I don’t necessarily love that comment, but Jurgen’s won World Cups himself, so who am I to question him? JEFF MCMENAMIN

Report: Heat look at Anthony The NBA season isn’t even over yet, but apparently free agent discussion has begun. ESPN reported Wednesday the Heat, who are trailing the Spurs 2-1 in the Finals, are interested in signed Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony this offseason. In order for it to happen, LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade would all need to opt out of their deals and restructure.
