The recently ousted executive editor of The New York Times will soon be imparting her words of wisdom to Harvard University students. Jill Abramson will join the Cambridge university as a visiting lecturer, the school said on Thursday. The New York Times fired Abramson last month and the Times in its own article called the move “unexpected.” Abramson was the newspaper’s first female executive editor, a post she held since 2011. Abramson is a 1976 Harvard graduate and will start her new role when the 201415 academic year begins. Harvard said she will teach undergraduate courses on narrative nonfiction. METRO

He then moved to L.A. and wrote for “Happy Endings,” the devastating cancellation of which enabled Gallivan to find a happy new beginning, bringing Boston scenes with Boston characters to a broader audience. Gallivan created “The McCarthys,” sold it to CBS and is staying on as an executive producer and writer. Paycheck. Senate votes to hike minimum wage to $11 per hour by 2017
Dozens rallied outside the McDonald’s on Tremont Street in March calling for higher wages for workers in the fast-food industry. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO
Low-wage workers in Massachusetts can look forward to making more money over the next three years. The Massachusetts Senate voted 35-4 on Thursday to pass legislation that will raise the minimum wage in three increments from $8 an hour to $11 an hour. The hourly minimum wage would go to $9 on Jan. 1, 2015, to $10 the following new year, and finally to $11 on Jan. 1, 2017. The measure does not include a provision for future annual increases to keep up with inflation. Massachusetts members of Business for a Fair Minimum Wage, a Boston-based network of business owners and executives, commended the hike, which many have
described as a House-Senate compromise. “A higher minimum wage will boost sales, keep more dollars circulating in our local economy and reduce the strain on our social safety net caused by poverty wages,” said Holly Sklar, the network’s director. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

and detailed expert analysis of the venue research and media surrounding this case is required to support a motion to change venue,” defense attorneys said in court papers. They’re just better together Reunion. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum talk about their chemistry and bugging the hell out of Ice Cube.
CULTURE Most wanted
It was a good many days “22 Jump Street” was also another chance for Hill and Tatum to spend time with Ice Cube, who plays their angry chief. But Hill wasn’t afraid to pester one of his heroes with endless questions. “I grew up in Los Angeles in the ’80s, so Ice Cube and Magic Johnson were who I idolized,” Hill says.
Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill reunite for the sequel to “21 Jump Street.” / GETTY IMAGES
Jonah Hill is trying to pinpoint the exact scene in 2012’s “21 Jump Street” when he knew he had chemistry with Channing Tatum. “I mean, I would say the first scene,” Tatum offers. “We hit it off right away,” Hill says, more seriously. One of the first scenes they shot wound up being the one that features Johnny Depp making a cameo as his character from the ’80s Fox show. “We were supposed to jump over this couch, and Chan immediately did this flip over it. And then I walked around it. I think that set the standard for the two movies: that one guy is really good at stuff and
the other is not.” The new “22 Jump Street” — which takes their not-soyoung undercover cops to college to bust another drug ring — plays on the ideas of sequels, exploring the anxieties about not wanting to repeat the first. For Hill, it was a chance to refine what he did before. “I felt more creatively inspired to think of the most clumsy way to do each stunt,” Hill says. “You’re putting together a puzzle to find how one would obviously do something, then ask yourself, ‘How can I completely mess that up?’” For Tatum, this was another chance to prove that his comedic turn in the first was no fluke. But when asked if he’s up to Hill’s improv skills, he’s honest: “Absolutely not. I’ve only seen one person — and she’s in the movie — be able to make Jonah even take a little step back. And that was Jillian Bell,” he says, referring to the actress who plays the insult-firing roommate of a student with whom Hill’s character sleeps.
“She brings the pain with him. I don’t have many scenes with her, so I was excited when I did, even though I knew I was going to take some hits along the way. I knew it would be like being in the ring with Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier and just being like, ‘What’s going to happen?’” Hill says making room for other people to be funny is one thing he learned from Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen. “Jillian Bell’s part was, as one of the writers, I would say incredibly underwritten,” Hill explains. “When Jillian came in and auditioned, we started improvising and she made the part her own. That’s what actors should do, if it’s a comedy or drama. She made the part great. It wasn’t written great. “That’s the fun of being an actor or a producer or whatever: You get to see people turn something bland into something wonderful.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

These kids understand fair play. Why doesn’t Quincy District Court?
The future While Hill is looking forward to taking a slight break from movies, Tatum is very busy. He’s been cast as Gambit in
the next “X-Men” movie. “He’s just the coolest one to me: the smoking, drinking, womanchasing, cussing one,” Tatum says. “He’s not even a good guy. He’s a thief.”
In courts across Massachusetts, some powerful people used to abuse the process of choosing candidates for the best jobs. Now courts are striving to make sure hiring procedures are transparent and fair for everyone.
Except in Quincy District Court. The court posted an opening for the chief probation officer job. But none of the qualified candidates made the grade. The court posted the job again; same result. Now the job is open again, for the THIRD TIME. No other court has had this problem. Were all of the candidates unqualified—or is someone playing favorites? Probation officers are good, dedicated people doing dangerous, challenging jobs, keeping our neighborhoods safer. This isn’t about any individual probation officer. It’s about powerful people playing games in secret.

It’s just not that funny anymore Back again. “How to Train Your Dragon 2” only has about five jokes in it, which may be a good thing.
Sequels come in two flavors: repeats of the first or continuing sagas that build to a franchise. “22 Jump Street” does the former, but does so with a selfawareness that calls into question the existence of sequels in the first place. “How to Train Your Dragon 2” may be even more extreme in that regard. Instead of another lighthearted tale of cute dragons tamed by goofy teens like its 2010 predecessor, it goes in a completely different, much darker and more dramatic direction. It’s as if Tim Burton’s “Batman” was followed by Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” OK, it’s not that extreme. “How to Train Your Dragon 2” is merely more serious, even tragic, than its predecessor. Where that film had scores of jokes, this has about five. Where the first detailed how a nebbishy kid, Hiccup (with
the voice of Jay Baruchel), went from zero to hero, here he has to deal with a larger threat to his dragon-loving Viking community: a menacing despot (Djimon Hounsou) who seeks to harness and control all of the world’s dragons to do his evil deeds. Hiccup also deals with meeting the grave environmentalist mother he never knew (voiced by Cate Blanchett), who reads her lines as though she’s doing Ibsen. What it does retain from the first is a visual handsomeness, with dark colors frequently interrupted by flames. The action, from dragon flying to heavy battles, is clean and kinetic and a reminder that live-action action these days too often goes for quicksilver editing that favors thrills over sense. Meanwhile, animators like to give you clear views of their handiwork. Odd though the tonal shift between the two films is, the po-facedness of “How to Train Your Dragon 2” becomes absorbing — or at least diverting. Like the first, it’s solid but instantly forgettable. It could change things up even more for the third outing, and few would notice the difference.

“Smart People” begins with a slow, dull Act 1 that employs cliche devices like the flashback to set up the big reveal in the second act. Thankfully, Act 2 has some funny moments, but the piece always feels like a sitcom about nothing that features four borderline-loathsome narcissists. We’ve seen that before. It’s supposed to be a “controversial” and “fiercely funny” play, according to the Huntington Theatre’s website. It’s not. Huntington playwriting fellow Lydia Diamond seems eager to poke the proverbial hornet’s nest in her tale of four Harvard intellectuals grappling with race, genetics, love and other complexities of being human. But any time she gets close to the core of these issues, she reverts back to pedestrian dialogue that feels like typical three-jokes-per-page sitcom fare. In one of the funniest scenes, Brian White (yes, there’s a liberal white guy whose last name is White), calls upon fellow rich, smart white folks to hold the mirror up to racism in their own lives. A searing probe courtesy of an all-out war at the din-

ner table could’ve brought the house down at this point, while (almost) compensating for earlier lines like, “See? White men can jump.” But Diamond instead opts to laugh at the overachieving Asian woman’s inability to nurture.
She also veers close to explosive territory by questioning whether African-American surgical resident Jackson Moore is the victim of racism or suffering from the fall-out of being an angry black man with a chip on his shoulder. It’s more potentially great drama that never happens. While there’s plenty of laughter, it’s largely thanks to the stellar acting chops of Miranda Craigwell and McKinley Belcher III. Without them, you’d be left with a script that never reaches its potential. NICK DUSSAULT @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

Thicke continues his stalker behavior It’s usually non-famous people who stalk famous people, but we have the exception that makes the rule right here: Robin Thicke just keeps finding ways to get his soon-to-be ex-wife Paula Patton back. His latest attempt is to call his next album “Paula.” What ever happened to releasing a self-titled album? This musical stalking thing has gotten out of hand! He’s written songs about her, is talking about her onstage every chance he gets — and now this. Can’t you two just work it out in private? That way your fans can get fun hits just like “Blurred Lines” on your next album, instead of creepy stalking love songs. LASSE E. KRISTIANSEN

Bieber obsessing over Gomez
Social media is the bane of the fickle heart, as Justin Bieber is proving with his erratic postings pertaining to on-again, off-again girlfriend Selena Gomez. While it seemed that the couple finally split for good a few months ago, Bieber doesn’t seem so sure. Just this week, he posted a close-up photo of the two in an embrace with the caption, “Our love is unconditional.” Suggesting a tentative Romeo, he quickly deleted the posting — but not before many of his 16 million Instagram followers screen-grabbed it and re-posted it.

Jennifer Lopez is now a ‘fitness robot’ Jennifer Lopez recently split from choreographer boyfriend Casper Smart, but apparently it’s not for the reason you might think. Sources tell Radar Online that Smart got fed up with how much of a “fitness robot” the “Jenny from the Block” singer had become, even though she was already in shape. “Jennifer’s obsession with her own body is out of control. There’s no doubt she’s worked herself into the ground to achieve her killer shape,” a source explains. “In the end, Jen and Casper had nothing else to talk about except diet and exercise stuff, and that was exactly how she wanted it.”

‘The 47 Ronin’ Saturday, 7 p.m. Harvard Film Archive 24 Quincy St., Cambridge $7-$9, 617-496-3211 hcl.harvard.edu This 1941 film by Japanese master Kenji Mizoguchi tells of the 47 Ronin, a group of samurai sworn to avenge their former lord, who committed seppuku (ritual suicide) after disrespecting a man of higher rank. To restore his honor, they plan the man’s murder, but committing it binds them to commit seppuku themselves.

John Waters talks about his stint hitchhiking across America. / GETTY IMAGES
John Waters Saturday, 2 p.m. Harvard Book Store, 1256 Massachusetts Ave.; Free, 617-661-1515 www.harvard.com In 2012, indie band Here We Go Magic tweeted that they’d picked up a hitchhiking John Waters in Ohio. It wasn’t a fluke incident — that adventure and more form the basis of Waters’ book about his travels, “Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America.” While the “in conversation” part of the evening with him at the Brattle sold out, you can still meet the legendary filmmaker at a book signing in the afternoon.
Monday, 7 p.m. Coolidge Corner Theater, 290 Harvard St., Brookline; $9-$11, 617-734-2500 www.coolidge.org You may not be able to see Neil Patrick Harris on Broadway, but you can see the 2001 film version on the big screen. For those who don’t know, “Hedwig” is about a German boy who turns himself into a female glam rock star — a complete sex change but for an “angry inch” of his manhood. MUSIC

Their charmingly deadpan bio notes that “Everyone sings but Caroline is the best so she sings the most,” and provides a straightforward list of their lyrical subjects: “Love, heartbreak, the moon, trains, quarries, the devil, disasters, ghosts, the weather and the undead.” It sounds like they’ve got it all covered!

Some things should really stay personal Re: ‘I’m proud of who I am’ (Metro, June 10) Here’s my question on this article: Why is it that now anyone who is gay or transgender feels the need to inform anyone who’ll listen what their status is? Where is the filter on personal information in this world now? Do I really need to know who’s gay and who’s transgender? I have no need for that much personal knowl-
Re: ‘Obama easing school debt law’ (Metro, June 10) Obama makes a big to-do about allowing more people limit repayments of federal student loans to 10 percent of their monthly incomes while scolding the Republican strawman for being against students.

This grandiose executive order will not, however, take effect until December 2015. If this man were capable of actually creating jobs, then there would be no need for college graduates to be subjected to minimum wage jobs upon graduation — or no jobs at all. edge of some one I don’t know or care to know about. People like that need to get over themselves, its not that damn serious. I’m straight — do I feel the need to announce to the world that I’m straight every time I walk in a room? No, because who really cares. There was definitely something more newsworthy than his sex change. Disaster at the dish MLB. The Red Sox haven’t gotten the job done at the plate this season and it’s the main reason they sit below .500 in 2014.
The Red Sox have plenty of issues these days, but it’s clear that Boston’s struggles at the plate far outweigh their problems on the mound. In their series in Baltimore to start the week, the Sox had a grand total of one run in three games. They somehow garnered a win out of that offensive output, a 1-0 victory on Tuesday. The weak offensive performance is nothing new for the Sox in this bizarro 2014 season. Boston has scored five runs or more in just 25 of 65 games this season. •
In a Sunday matinee (1:30 p.m., NESN), Corey Kluber (6-4, 3.35 ERA) is slated to go for the Indians while Brandon Workman (1-0, 2.86 ERA) is slotted to work for Boston.

Bogaerts went 0-for-16 in the previous four games and struck out five times during the stretch. “I’m human. We all make mistakes. We all struggle, Bogaerts told WEEI.com. “I’m going to be fine. POPULARITY OF SOCCER IN US WILL REMAIN LOW It’s the world’s biggest and longest sporting party and we’ve always been the kid in the corner too afraid to dance or do a keg stand. The United States is the oddball at the big dance that is the World Cup, because we still (after decades and decades) haven’t realized that soccer, (ahem) futbol, is “the best game on Earth.” That’s not to say there won’t be great interest here in the monthlong extravaganza that’s already underway in Brazil. The TV ratings will be through the roof, even in the States. Personally, I haven’t been this psyched for a soccer tournament since our Essex County U-12 jamboree in 1994. Not so coincidentally, that was also the year the U.S. hosted the World Cup. That was also the year that the hardcore soccer fan convinced the casual U.S. sports fan that in 20 years, soccer would be the most popular game in the country. Sorry
Taylor, Trevor and Justin. It just never worked out that way. The world’s futbol is an afterthought here, while American football is more popular than ever. Those who believe the NFL’s “concussion crisis” will bring its popularity to a halt are mistaken. New helmets will be invented. New rules will be put in place. And in the year 2034, the NFL will still be king. Football, the one with the pointy ball, is the sports equivalent of oil in this country. We’re addicted, and although there are safer and more efficient ways of getting our sports fix, we won’t quit it. Not in the lifetime of anyone who’s reading this. Don’t feel too bad, though, you soccer people. In 1994, we were also told the metric system would be the preferred method of measurement in the U.S. We were told gas-powered cars and also gas stations would be nowhere to be seen in 2014. Soccer being the No.

1 sport in the country in 20 years wasn’t the only empty promise. Look, change is obscenely hard in this country, as any story relating to Washington, D.C., these days will show.
Change is even harder when the constituent seeking change has its own internal problems. ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap delivered one of the all-time fascinating, yet chilling, reports in the sports network’s history

an NFL team for the rigors of a 16-game regular season and beyond,” Falcons owner Arthur Blank told ESPN. The NFL instituted a rule after it proved difficult to find a team willing to participate in “Hard Knocks” last year. The league can force a team to appear on the show if: 1. The team has a new head coach; 2. The team made the playoffs in one of the previous two seasons; or 3. The team has appeared on the show in the past 10 years. The Bears, Bills, Cardinals, Giants, Jaguars, Raiders, Rams and Steelers were eligible to be featured this year, but the Falcons were more than willing to raise their hands. Atlanta struggled through a 4-12 season in 2013 after making the NFC Championship game the season prior. METRO
