At Sam Adams, grabbing some brew and saying ‘I do’ Let’s go to the hop (garden). Sam Adams this week will release a special wedding ale during a celebration where patrons can get married at the brewery. Wedding planning can be a stressful, expensive and drawn-out process. Or it can be simple, unique and quick, taking place in the hops garden at the Sam Adams brewery. On Wednesday, Sam Adams will host its annual release of Brewlywed Ale at the Jamaica Plain brewery where couples can also tie the knot inside the hops garden. This is the third year the Bostonbased brewing company is putting on the event. During the first two years, nine couples said “I do” while picking up their limited edition brew. “It’s kind of a cross between the Running of the Brides and a beer fest,” said Jim Koch, founder of the Boston Beer Company. Koch added that he’s been drawn in to some ceremonies as a best man and even a bridesmaid. “You’ve got people in wedding dresses and tuxes and then you’ve got people who just came for the beer. It’s a lot of fun.” The event features the one-day release of Sam Adams Brewlywed Ale, which was limited to 200 cases. Additionally, the day features private brewery tours, sampling of beer-infused

In addition to getting married, couples can sample cakes and other wedding fare at the Sam Adams brewery. / SAM ADAMS About the beer The limited release Brewlywed Ale is a Belgian-style “bride ale” that’s a medium bodied brew at 8 percent alcohol by volume. •

It comes in 750mL bottles for $14.99 each. It’s also available in cases of 12, with a limit of two per person.

Governor’s race. Dems narrow field to three Treasurer Steven Grossman won the Democratic Party’s endorsement on Saturday in this year’s race for governor, comfortably outdistancing a field of rivals that was chopped from five to three as the Newton Democrat now hopes to use his victory to build momentum and close a polling

gap that shows Martha Coakley in the lead. Coakley, the state’s twoterm attorney general, finished second with 23 percent of the voting delegates to Grossman’s 35 percent. Dr. Donald Berwick, a former Medicare and Medicaid director, earned 22 percent of the vote. SHNS

People can line up starting at 7 a.m. and Foster, whose family lives in Greater Boston, is hoping her family can secure some of the limited wedding brew. “I’m still scared about my family getting a case of it,” she said.

wedding fare and an onsite justice of the peace that will marry couples or help them renew their vows. Kate Foster, 30, was never interested in having a big wedding, so when a family friend who works for Sam Adams told her mother about last year’s event, Foster emailed her fiance, 31-yearold John Helter. “I actually thought it was a joke,” said Helter of getting Foster’s email suggesting they get married at the brewery. But eight days later, after taking some unexpected days off from work, getting their marriage license and quickly picking out a dress and a suit, the two were married in the hops garden. “It was just gorgeous. Their hops garden area, they had it all set up with white beautiful chairs out, a string quartet playing in the background, flowers; it surpassed any expectations for what I wanted it to be,” said Foster. The couple, who live in Pennsylvania, toured the brewery together on one of their first trips to Boston. “We’re not a fancy hotel or a big church or an elaborate venue,” said Koch. “We’re just a brewery. It tells you something about the importance of beer in all of our relationships.” Those interested in wedding Wednesday at the brewery must bring their marriage license and email brewlywed@ samueladams.com. Sen. Graham: Iran’s help needed to avoid Iraq collapse The United States needs Iran’s involvement to prevent a collapse of the government in Iraq and should open talks toward that end, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham said on Sunday. “We are probably going to need their help to hold Baghdad

The insurgent offensive that has threatened to dismember Iraq spread to the northwest of the country on Sunday, when Sunni militants launched a dawn raid on a town close to the Syrian border, clashing with police and government forces. As the rapid advance south by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant toward Baghdad appeared to slow over the weekend, fighting erupted in the town of Tal Afar 40 miles west of Mosul near the Syrian border, security sources and a local official said. ISIL fighters and other Sunni Muslim-armed groups have stormed several towns on the road to Baghdad after seizing Mosul nearly a week ago — an offensive which only stalled as it approached the mainly Shi’ite capital. The insurgents’ advance alarmed both Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki’s Shi’ite supporters in Iran and officials in

Maliki’s security forces and allied militias regained some territory on Saturday, easing part of the pressure on his Shi’ite-led government, and officials said they were regaining the initiative. But Sunday’s fighting in Tal Afar, a majority Turkomen town which is home to both Shi’ites and Sunnis, showed how volatile the deepening sectarian divisions have become. The city had been defended by an unit of Iraq’s security forces commanded by a Shi’ite major general, Abu Walid, whose men were among the few holdouts from the government’s forces in the province around Mosul not to flee the rapid ISIL advance. Her last album was called “Born to Die,” so maybe we shouldn’t be too shocked by Lana Del Ray being exceptionally morbid. But her latest proclamation is sounding alarm bells. “I wish I was dead already,” she tells the Guardian, after comparing herself to some late heroes like Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse. When the interviewer tries to get her to walk back the outrageous statement, Del Ray counters with, “I do! I don’t want to have to keep doing this. But I am.” So what doesn’t she want to keep doing? “Everything. That’s just how I feel. If it wasn’t that way, then I wouldn’t say it. I would be scared if I knew [death] was coming.”

“22 Jump Street, starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as cops who return to college undercover, collected $60 million in ticket sales at domestic theaters over the weekend, out-gunning the animated “How to Train Your Dragon 2. The sequel to the 2012 hit “21 Jump Street handily topped the sequel to the 2010 blockbuster, which took in $50 million from Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian box offices. “Maleficent, Disney’s take on “Sleeping Beauty starring Angelina Jolie as the spellcasting evil fairy, was third with $19 million. “Maleficent has totaled $163.5 million since its May 30 release, for a global total of more than

$436 million. “22 Jump Street started the weekend on a strong note, collecting $5.5 million in ticket sales at Thursday night shows, according to Box Office Mojo, which called the take “awesome. The Tom Cruise sci-fi film “Edge of Tomorrow, about a soldier who relives each day after dying in battle, was fourth with $16.2 million during a disappointing domestic run that has so far totaled $56.6 million. It has added sales well over twice that much in international markets. “The Fault in Our Stars, the $12 million teen drama that led last weekend’s box office, fell to fifth with sales of $15.7 million. FILM Jenny Slate — “Saturday Night Live alum and the woman behind “Marcel the Shell — takes the lead in “Obvious Child, an indie comedy in which she plays a late-20s New York City native who is dealing with what could be her worst Valentine’s Day yet. The events of the day include an appointment to get an abortion, an aspect of the film that’s been stealing most of the focus. It’s something Slate is not thrilled about, but also totally cool with. “Obvious Child manages to capture an authentic look at a stage of life that we don’t see closely examined very often in film for some reason. I know, it’s strange. People seem to think of the late 20s as, like, those are the go-getters and people who are too young to say, like, “Get your life together. But, in fact, I think the late 20s are really, really tough. They were really tough for me. I would never go back to that. Really? Sort of. Nobody told me that my 20s would be a surprise second adolescence, you know? And also, you’re getting to the point where you’re like, “I should have a career formed now, right? And it just takes longer than that. There’s also an incorrect assertion that personal development should be finished by that point, and

I’m sure if you’re in a field that has more structure, maybe you are more settled by that point. But freakouts are allowed and normal.

On the issues

The A-word Are you getting tired of people referring to this as “the abortion movie? Yeah, because it isn’t a comedy about abortion. It’s a romantic comedy with a modern story in which a woman has a safe and regret-free procedure. That’s rare, considering how abortion is usually dealt with

in film and on TV. It’s important, I think, to examine and express the idea that even though a choice is made and a choice is clear, that it’s really complex even after the choice is made. Those more nuanced situations are where you can find a lot of emotion, and they’re what makes a story relatable and interesting. To have faith in a story where a woman has an abortion and it’s

not a trauma or a victory but rather just an aspect of her life and something that adds to her personal development — to trust that your audiences might be satisfied with that is a really good feeling. It doesn’t even feel like that much of a risk to take, but it does feel like a necessity right now.

Yeah. But I get it. And honestly I would much rather people talk about it than not talk about it, and if people are going to say, “It’s the THIS, the only thing that will happen is that people will show up to the movie and realize that it’s many things and not just one.

But you’re right, it’s not what this movie is “about.

Director Howard Hawks had quit two Westerns (“Viva Villa” and “The Outlaw”) before he finally finished one. And it was a doozy: “Red River,” from 1948, is a cattle drive movie in which John Wayne’s stubborn, Ahab-esque rancher clashes with his adopted son, played by Montgomery Clift. It’s a boy’s adventure and a dark psychological exploration at once, as well as a Howard Hawks hang-out picture, with an ensemble cast that struggles to keep cool as an increasingly psychotic Wayne keeps picking them off.

star. But “Red River” was the first time he’d gone dark and menacing. As an oft-told story goes, his frequent director John Ford after seeing the film joked, “I didn’t know the big sonofab— could act.”

Even for the Criterion Collection, this is one comprehensive set. The package is a brick, thanks to the inclusion of Borden Chase’s “Blazing Guns on the Chisholm Trail,” the serialized novel that served as inspiration. You can also compare two different versions: the 133-minute cut that’s long been in circulation and the shorter, tighter pre-release version that Hawks always told people he preferred.

Brad Pitt helped make a troubled production a surprise box office monster. It’s still a mystery why it caught on: It’s a mostly joyless and, most tragically, PG-13-rated zombie picture that only kicks into gear in the third act. If this drives you toward Max Brooks’ book, then good — though the film may be the least faithful literary adaptation in history. The source is a fake oral history set after the zombies’ defeat, focusing on the trauma that comes with surviving a near-apocalypse. Meanwhile, the film can’t even get anything fun out of new “Doctor Who” star Peter Capaldi.

Take a five-minute tech break One of the main reasons we’re so stressed these days is because of technology. Give yourself a fiveminute tech break once a day. Use that five minutes to practice one of the meditations you’ve learned here. Use your one-minute breath, go for a walking meditation or find peace in your pulse. Turn off your phone, step away from the computer and create space for stillness.

A MINUTE A DAY ADDS UP TO ZEN

Zen in the City

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN WWW.GABBYB.TV Gabrielle Bernstein is the author of “Spirit Junkie.” Her new book, “Miracles Now,” is in stores now.

When people tell me they don’t have time to meditate, I reply, “Do you have time to feel like crap?” If you’re a busy person looking for meditative moments throughout your day, then follow these seven steps.

We all have a minute to spare One minute of every day spent in stillness can change your life. Commit to taking even just one minute a day, using it to silence your mind and calm your energy, and follow this breathing technique: Breathe in for 5 seconds, hold your breath for 5 seconds, release for 5 seconds, hold for 5 seconds.

Peace is in your pulse Meditation can be as simple as finding your pulse. This one is

easy for meditation newbies. A great meditation for beginners is what I’ve nicknamed Peace Is in Your Pulse. It improves your concentration and brings calm to even the most scattered mind. Begin by sitting comfortably cross-legged on the floor. Lightly close your eyes and focus on the space between your eyebrows (the third-eye point). The mantra is “sat nam” (which means “truth identified”). The hand position (mudra) is simple. Place the four fingers of your right hand on your left wrist over your pulse. The fingers are in a straight line, lightly pressed on the wrist so you can feel your pulse in each fingertip. On each beat of your pulse, mentally hear the sound of sat nam. This meditation can be done anytime, anywhere, and you can experience great benefits in just one minute. Practice it daily to develop your intuition and calm your mind.

Peace begins with you This technique is a fantastic Kundalini meditation that’s fast, easy and effective. Gently press your thumb against your other four fingers individually, and say one word: index finger (peace), middle finger (begins), ring finger (with), pinkie finger (me). Breathe deeply as you say each word. Go as slow or as fast as you’d like. Use this technique in line at the bank, under the desk in an office meeting or in the middle of a fight with your partner. This technique will get you through all kinds of crazy emotions and help you release resentment fast.

Meditate while you cook

Next time you feel stressed out after a long day, cook a meal. Use your time in the kitchen to redirect your focus from your to-do list and on to serving your soul. If you enjoy cooking, then it can be considered a meditative practice. Time spent in the kitchen is designated for creativity and helps you detach from your day. Next time you feel stressed out after a long day, cook a meal. Use your time in the kitchen to redirect your focus from your to-do list

and onto serving your soul. Enjoy the process, and then enjoy the meal! Use these steps to bring more meditative moments into your day and get your zen on! Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author.

Tip

Walking meditation You can find a meditative moment even when you’re walking. The next time you’re running an errand or walking to your office, make it meditative.

Take a deep breath with every step.

With each step, recite these words: “I am / calm now.”

Feel your feet and focus on being more grounded with each step.

Use a mantra while you walk.

Whenever you’re stressed, you disconnect from your body and your power. Get more grounded with walking meditation.

LOOKING PROFESSIONAL IN THE HEAT Ah, summer. Now that Memorial Day has come and gone, your office culture may be a little more lax. Not only are the hours potentially more relaxed on Fridays — so, too, is the dress code. There are several ways to look and feel more comfortable at work without getting onto human resources’ radar screen.

Even when your oďŹƒce is extremely casual, avoid tank tops and mini-skirts. If you’re showing too much skin, you probably shouldn’t be wearing it.

Get schooled on your company’s policy Not to become the HR police or anything, but simply take a few minutes to read the rules, which are probably posted on your company’s intranet site. If you’re relatively new to the office and it’s your first summer at your company, it’s even more important to peruse the policy instead of relying on observing colleagues.

Dress in layers If you wear a linen dress to the office, bring a blazer. If you’re a guy and wear a polo top,

bring a jacket. You never know when you’ll get pulled into a last-minute meeting with clients. And if you don’t wear that jacket, at least keep one tucked away in your office for potential use. (Just think: If the air conditioning is on full blast, you’ll need something to prevent you from feeling like you’re in the frozen tundra.)

Missing the specifics Don’t leave an employer guessing! Your rÊsumÊ is supposed to indicate that you’re a good fit for a position, so it must include any relevant information. Briefly identify the overall

function of your role before focusing on specific tasks and accomplishments that connect your skills to the job opportunity at hand. Avoid broad, generalized statements. Don’t rely on a job title to catch an employer’s eye. While previous experience in a similar role is an obvious asset, employee responsibilities can differ substantially.

Holt a Swiss Army knife for Red Sox MLB. Brock Holt has played just about every position in the field this season for the Red Sox.

Four different positions in a week’s span: It’s something a Little Leaguer learning the game of baseball for the first time, trying to figure out what position he likes best, may encounter. Brock Holt is not in Little League anymore — he’s doing this at the highest of hardball levels, as he’s played left field, third base, first base and, most recently, right field for the Red Sox. Interestingly enough, Holt came up through the minors as a shortstop with the Pirates before being traded to the Red Sox prior to last season. Even through playing multiple positions, he hasn’t seen any time at his “natural position of shortstop. His toughest test to date came Saturday as he manned right field at Fenway — a park with plenty of tricky dimensions. But Holt he didn’t bat an eye, reacting the same as he has for every position. “Yeah, I would say so just because there is a lot of room to cover out there, especially here at Fenway, said Holt when asked if right field was his most daunting assignment. “Then being an afternoon game, the sun was pretty tough as well. Like I said, it was fun, a new challenge, and I’m glad I got the opportunity to do it. What’s most impressive is that Holt had never played a position besides shortstop, third base or second base at any point in his baseball career until roughly two weeks ago. The Fort Worth, Texas, native’s easy-going, calm attitude has served him well with his ever changing role this season. “That’s my mind-set, just go day by day, he said. “Wait and see the lineup and see where I am at, then get ready to play wherever that day. The 26-year-old has earned the increased versatility because of how he has performed at the plate, particularly in the lead-off spot as he’s been the

As has been the case for the majority of the 2014 season, as soon as the Red Sox take two steps forward, they take two steps back. Boston dropped the last two games of a four-game series with Cleveland at Fenway Park this past weekend, the latest defeat coming in the form of a 3-2, extra-inning loss Sunday afternoon. Cleveland’s Nick Swisher homered down the right ďŹ eld line to give the Indians a hard-fought win in the series ďŹ nale. US opens up World Cup play World Cup. The United States’ underdog quest begins Monday against a familiar foe. Ghana has been kryptonite for the United States national team in the World Cup. Ghana’s win in the final game of the group stage prevented the U.S. from advancing in the 2006 World Cup. Four years later, Ghana knocked the Americans out in the second round of the tournament after the Yanks

had won their group. In a twist of fortune, the 2014 World Cup campaign opens with the African giants (6 p.m., ESPN). The U.S. needs a win and the resulting three points to have any hope of advancing from the “Group of Death with Portugal and Germany still to come. Only four United States players who started in the 2-1 2010 World Cup loss return to the likely starting 11 on Monday. KRISTIAN DYER @KristianRDyer sports@metro.us

Three things to keep an eye on

since the technical side is not at an elite level. But Ghana is a physically strong and fast team, negating those attributes for the Americans. And they are technically a better side, which gives them a slight edge overall.

1

Because it’s Ghana Simply, Ghana is very good. They boast world class players who play for top clubs in top leagues. While the Americans are very good, they don’t have a player in that upper echelon of talent. In addition, Ghana is a horrible matchup. American beats superior sides with athleticism, speed and hard work

No playmaker It’s been dissected a million different ways, but Landon Donovan watching this match from his couch hurts the U.S. chances at a win. Even if he isn’t a starter anymore his skill set is needed in a game like this. Comfort on the ball and composure are in short supply on this roster, as is his one-on-one ability.
