NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO
Thirty-one-year-old Roger Lussier loves his city. Luckily for him, he gets to spend his day boasting about it to tourists, rubbing elbows with its residents and taking in the city’s iconic sights – all while working on his undoubtedly impressive glutes. Since 2010, the affable Allston resident and Boston University alumni has put in thousands of hours peddling for Boston Pedicab. As part of Metro’s Bold Bostonians series, Lussier shared the tricks of his trade and tips for pedicab-wary passengers.
ROGER LUSSIER Bold Bostonians. As part of Metro’s ongoing Q&A series featuring interesting people in Boston, we sat down with pedicab driver Roger Lussier to learn more about what it’s like to cart 900 pounds around the city’s crazy streets.
What exactly is a pedicab? It’s a 21-speed mountain bike attached to a fiber-glass tub with a padded seat on it. A lot of people call it a lot of different things. A rickshaw is actually not the correct term, but it has become an Americanized way of describing a pedicab. A rickshaw is technically the cabs you pull as you run. The running ones aren’t as common in America.
PEDAL TO THE METAL
How did you get into the biz? My friend was one of the original six pedicabbers. He’d been doing it for five years, and told me about an opportunity. I was a bartender at Our House West, which closed. I was jobless, and he knew I knew the city really well. Being a pedicab driver is similar to bartending in a lot of ways because it’s about creating a relationship with the person. I’ve had people hop on my pedicab and just want to talk. What’s it like navigating the often cranky streets of Boston? It’s one of those things where when I’m riding a bike I kind of give a side eye to pedestrians, and when I’m driving I don’t want to deal with bikes. People who drive in the city respond well if you’re communicative; if you’re making eye contact and using hand signals, or waving and pointing. I think that’s why I’ve managed to ride so far without out any accidents. How do you usually get their attention? Depends on what part of the city we’re in. Sometimes just yelling “pedicab rides here!” works out pretty well. We’ll say, “open fare rides” or “pay what you want rides.” You kind of establish your own technique, and as long as you’re not bumming out all the other pedicab drivers with your technique, it works well. Speaking of fares, how much does it cost to catch a ride? We have an open-fare system, which allows a give and take. What I’ve started saying in
Boston Pedicab

The company, which debuted in 2005, offers three-wheeled entertainment, tours and simple rides throughout most of Boston proper. •
Passengers can hail a pedicab or call ahead for quick service.
•
Groups of 10 or more can book “party rides” to and from
special events, or can make the rowdy ride a special event in itself. •

hopefully, my driving ability. I always ask them, “What was it worth to you?”

Some hop on and have an idea of what they expect. Hopefully, I exceed that idea through my knowledge of sports and the city itself, with my sense of humor and,
Do you encounter a lot of drunks? I don’t recall picking up anyone too obnoxious. I had a drunk guy once ask me, “If I can get that girl to get into the pedicab with me, can I get the ride for free?” and I’m like, “Well, you don’t have a chance, so sure!” Do you think people overlook pedicabs as an alternative way to get around the city? I think that a lot of people who turn us down don’t realize that the open fare is actually the way that we oper-
“I had a drunk guy once ask me, ‘If I can get that girl to get into the pedicab with me, can I get the ride for free?’ and I’m like, ‘Well you don’t have a chance, so sure!’” Lussier ate. I think that’s probably the most common misconception. I’d also say other people think that we’d be slower than other ways of getting around – some people actually think we’d be slower than walking. That’s not true. What makes a pedicabber good at his or her job? You have to be outgoing, know the city really well, think on your feet both with the way you’re navigating directions and traffic and also with what you’re saying to your passengers. You have to be considerate, knowledgeable and friendly. People like when you project a positive vibe. I find that a smile and being able to relate to some-
one is key. I’d also argue that since some passengers are not always good at making conversation, you have to read them. Sometimes it’s clear they just do not want to chitchat. Is it difficult to carry, er, particularly overweight people? That question comes up a lot, but honestly it’s never an issue. It’s just a matter of putting the bike in the right gear. The weight limit on a pedicab is about 900 pounds. You don’t need to be as strong as most people think, but you should definitely be in some semblance of shape. By the way, we’ve got some ladies, and I’d argue that the women who pedicab are even stronger than the men. It seems that you and your fellow pedicabbers have quite a camaraderie. They are like brothers and sisters to me in many ways. That’s what keeps me coming back -- the community. We go out, and we have the time of our lives. In court. Hernandez lawyers want Lloyd murder charge dropped Citing a lack of evidence, attorneys for former Patriots star Aaron Hernandez on Monday asked a judge to throw out a charge that the 24-year-old shot and killed a Dorchester man last June. Associate Justice Susan Garsh said she would take the motion under advisement, but ruled that the trial tied to the alleged murder of Odin Lloyd will begin on Oct. 6 and would likely last up to two months. Defense attorneys argued that prosecutors have not produced evidence tying Hernandez to the crime, nor have they shown a motive. But prosecutors Monday fired back, claiming that they can indeed link Hernandez to the murder, and said his alleged involvement in other shootings showed “a common plan or pattern.” Last month, Hernandez pleaded not guilty to firstdegree murder and other related charges in the drive-by shooting deaths of Daniel de Abreu, 28, and Safiro Furtado, 29, who were killed in Boston’s South End in July 2012. Suffolk University law professor Chris Dearborn, a former defense attorney,

believes it is “highly unlikely” Garsh will allow the motion to dismiss the murder charge. But the defense’s request exposed how “weak and fundamentally circumstantial” the evidence is, Dearborn said. “The fact that they even had a viable motion to dismiss the charge speaks volumes about the difficulties the Commonwealth has in proving the case,” he said. Hernandez’s lawyers on Monday also asked Garsh to suppress surveillance footage from his home. Garsh said she would rule on the motions at a later date. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

Obama to sign order barring discrimination against gays President Barack Obama will sign an executive order barring federal contractors from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, a White House official said. The White House has been pressing Congress to pass legislation to ban employment discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and has resisted issuing an executive order in favor of pursuing a broader, legislative solution. But Obama has spent the year taking executive action on other domestic priorities where Congress has failed to make legislative headway, and activists have pressed him to do the same on gay rights. COURTNEY MAUM SPLITS HER TIME LIVING IN NEW YORK CITY, PARIS AND THE BERKSHIRES. COLIN LANE
T

Summer’s hottest book is no beach read Fiction. Courtney Maum’s novel is one of the buzziest of the beach read season — but it’s not fluff.
It all started with a note taped on the outside of a French art gallery. The note read (in French), “Mr. Architect, you were wearing an elegant hat and you wanted to buy the blue bear. Please contact me.” Courtney Maum was living in Paris at the time and experiencing years of writer’s block, but that one note sparked the idea for her new extremely buzz-y novel, “I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You.” The protagonist is a British artist named Richard who
paints rooms as they appear through a keyhole, but he is more obsessed with pining over his ex-mistress than his art — or his wife. He starts regretting his affair about the same time his wife is done with him. “In my family history, everyone cheated on everyone else and got divorced. I found myself wondering, ‘Did anyone try to work it out?’” Maum tells us. Because the book addresses infidelity, early readers are trying to pull marital lessons from these fictional characters. “I’m pretty flattered by that,” Maum says. “Marriage is freaking awkward. You’re not psyched after eight years to get into bed with the same person.” Maum says she wrote as if she were sitting there with Richard and his wife in the kitchen, with the baby upstairs: “I wrote with my heart,” she

says. That’s probably why, as a reader, you can’t help but root for Richard — despite his many flaws. That’s not to say that creating a balanced character who was funny, dark and likable all at the same time was easy for Maum. “When I wrote the first version, I got a lot of rejection letters,” she says. “All the editors thought Richard was too unlikable. At first I just thought they just weren’t risk-takers, but when I read the manuscript again 10 years later, I realized they were right.”

He says the film he’s shooting now in Australia is mostly digital. “There’s nothing here. There’s no environment. It’s all blue screen and pretending to look at things. In the desert, you really feel oppressed; you feel heavy. You feel tired. When you’re tired, certain emotions are more available. Thwaites had other physical traits to work through. His character has a muscular disease that has crippled his legs, requiring the actor to use crutches. “There was one night I went out in my crutches to try and get a feel for how the character would move. Later on I went to the gym to run. And people would be like, ‘Come on, this guy’s a phony.’ Floral arrangements Tour operator Collette and RHS Garden Holidays have partnered to create horticulture-themed tours throughout Europe. To book a babymoon similar to this trip, look for The Gardens of London or The Beauty of Britain package at www.gocollette.com.
Stacy Keibler, George Clooney’s former flame, recently Instagrammed a photo with the caption: “Sun, sand and serenity — the perfect #babymoon.” Indeed! Basking in the heat and humidity 30 weeks pregnant and 20 pounds heavier, beads of sweat accompanying your labored breathing — wait, that sounds awful. Meditative garden strolls on occasionally overcast days, topped off with comforting cups of herbal tea? That’s more like it, and that’s what you’ll find in England. Like motherhood, gardening is about cultivating life, and there are no bigger gardening aficionados than the English. This is obvious every May when, as it has for the last 101 years, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show comes to London. Fortunately, you don’t have to know a thing about gardening to enjoy the breathtaking temporary displays or the permanent gardens on the hospital grounds. Can’t get to London in May?

When night falls, sleep soundly at Wood Hall Hotel & Spa (www.handpickedhotels. co.uk), an English country manor that predictably exudes an air of refinement. Staying in London
Blooming bellies and flowers RHS, the Royal Horticultural Society (www.rhs.org.uk), has four gardens you can visit year-round. The one closest to the capital, RHS Garden Wisley, showcases exotic species. A few hours to the north, in Yorkshire, is the RHS Garden Harlow Carr. Stroll through time, with gardens representing a particular era or season. Time-traveling can be exhausting, but fortunately, Bettys (www.bettys.co.uk) is on hand

For five-star treatment in a five-star building, look no further than Rosewood London. Less than a year old, the UK outpost of the luxury hotel group cuts no corners when it comes to service, beautifully appointed accommodations and topnotch dining. As it’s your last hurrah, splurge on one of the 44 suites. “Home away from home” is only apt if your actual home has a marble bathroom, the most comfortable bed in the world and a butler, however. The hotel’s Sense Spa offers a prenatal massage that puts the mother-to-be in a zenlike state, one that will be all too rare soon. www.rosewoodhotels.com

Horoscope
Gemini | May 22-June 20. Being too rigid will alienate you from your peers. Try to be a little more flexible so you can stay on the good side of your colleagues. Cancer | June 21-July 22. You may daydream about exotic destinations — but, in reality, experiencing cultural events in your own community will bring you just as much enjoyment. Explore your neighborhood. Leo | July 23-Aug. 22. You need to realistically examine your financial situation and do whatever it takes to protect your interests. Failing to keep on top of agreements, contracts or legal matters could land you in debt. Virgo | Aug. 23-Sept. 22. Compromise, not conflict, will be the order of the day. You will lose an important ally if you are too argumentative or demanding. Be willing to meet halfway.
12
Sagittarius | Nov. 22Dec. 21. Don’t get involved in any power struggles today. If everyone does their own thing, there will be less opportunity for discord and disagreements. Spend time with someone who shares your ideas. Capricorn | Dec. 22-Jan. 20. Listen and offer solutions to friends, relatives or colleagues who need someone to confide in, but don’t be too quick to share your secrets. Aquarius | Jan. 21-Feb. 18. Protect yourself by doing extensive research before making a radical career move. If you act on false information, you could undo all the progress you have made so far. Pisces | Feb. 19-March 20. Experience is a great teacher, so consider past successes and failures before you make a move. Keeping your emotions under control will prevent you from making an ill-advised choice.
Libra | Sept. 23-Oct. 22. Your current job may be falling short of your expectations. Improving your work situation should be your main focus. Do some networking to find a more suitable position.
Aries | March 21-April 20. Don’t let a shortage of funds hold you back. Others think highly of your talents and will support your efforts, so believe in your assets and capabilities.
Scorpio|Oct. 23-Nov. 21. You could use a few laughs. Some healthy competition will get your juices flowing. Challenge friends or family members to a word game.
Taurus | April 21-May 21. Dare yourself to try something new. You will become inspired if you choose to do things that are unfamiliar to you. Take the plunge. BERNICE BEDE OSOL
Knowledge of orientation is serious
Everyone should get their say in the matter
in the world. That article changed her life. Very likely there are young people today who have been given hope from Lydon’s piece. And as for his complaint about why people have to “announce” they’re gay, it’s no different than Kim and Kanye or Selena and Justin “announcing” they’re straight. To a gay teen with few role models, it certainly is “that damn serious.” Parns is the one who needs to get over himself. What he considers intrusive is really just the reporting of reality.
Re: ‘Some things should really just stay personal’ (Metro, June 13-16) To reader C.M. Parns: If you had read the article [“I’m proud of who I am,” Metro, June 10], you’d see exactly why it’s important for people like Jennifer Lydon to “inform” us that transgendered people exist. When Lydon was 11, she read a similar piece about Renee Richards and realized she wasn’t alone
Re: ‘Some things should really just stay personal’ (Metro, June 13-16) Bravo to letter writer C.M. Parns for saying exactly what I was thinking! Americans stun Ghana early, late World Cup. The U.S. won its first match in the Brazil tournament, 2-1, over rival Ghana. There was early excitement, late dejection and late exuberance for the U.S. men’s soccer team Monday in Brazil, but after 90 minutes of draining onfield play, the Americans stood tall, finding sweet revenge over Ghana with a monumental 2-1 World Cup win. Minutes after Ghana’s Andre Ayew scored to nearly lock down a 1-1 tie, John Brooks bounced in a picture-perfect Graham Zusi corner kick off his head and into the net to give the U.S. the lead they would leave with. If drama was what casual U.S. futbol fans wanted, they got it in the American’s opener as Clint Dempsey scored just 31 seconds in. Dempsey’s early

Ghana controlled play in between the Americans’ bookend goals. It held possession 62 percent of the match and had a whopping 21 shots on goal to the Americans’ eight. The U.S. men’s team will now shift its focus to Portugal (Sunday, 6 p.m., ESPN), its next opponent in Group G play.
