Gun rights activists: ‘Kill the bill’ on gun violence Vowing to fight. Armed with signs and chants, the group of gun rights activists promised to stop the bill in the state House if it isn’t amended. Gun owners and gun rights activists are taking aim at a proposed gun control bill spurred by the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and which is now making its way through the state House. More than 100 activists rallied outside the House on Wednesday holding “Don’t tread on me” flags and chanting, “Kill the bill.” The rally against the reduction of gun violence bill was organized by the Gun Owners’ Action League. “We are working very hard behind the scenes to try to come up with an actual crime bill instead of a bill that goes after us,” said Jim Wallace, executive director of GOAL. “There is no Massachusetts gun control success story. It’s an absolute myth. So we need to make sure that our message is loud and clear – that our rights are not up for grabs.” The bill, proposed in May by House Speaker Robert DeLeo, would require private gun sales to take place at a licensed dealer, increase penalties for improper firearm storage and give police chiefs more discretion when licensing people for a rifle or shotgun. The latter aspect of the bill is one of the more contentious points of it.

Deval Patrick, who will soon receive the bill, also favors an increase in the wage floor. If signed into law, the wage for tipped workers would increase from $2.63 an hour to $3.75 per hour by 2017. It’s the first increase in the hourly wage for tipped workers since 1999. SHNS

Massachusetts, the organization said, had the third-lowest gun death rate in the nation because of the state’s strong gun violence prevention laws and lower rate of ownership. Louisiana ranked at the top of the list.

the bill said lawmakers took time crafting it to get it right and believe it’s a comprehensive piece of legislation. During a recent Public Safety Committee meeting, the bill just barely advanced with members voting 7-6 to report it favorably. It was moved on to the House Ways and Means Committee last week. Wallace said the bill doesn’t go after criminals and that his group would be open to amending the bill, but as it stands now, the bill should not be enacted. When asked about recent school shootings and that the bill was an outcome following the push for reform after the Newtown shootings, Wallace said the focus should be on mental health rather than gun control.

Defense survey finds 57 percent think Tsarnaev is guilty Lawyers for the accused Boston Marathon bomber asked a judge on Wednesday to move his upcoming trial to Washington, D.C., saying so many residents of Boston had been at the race that it would be all but impossible to select an impartial jury in the Hub. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 20, who is Chechen-born, is facing the death penalty if convicted in the April 15, 2013, attack that killed three and injured 264. His attorneys said in papers filed in U.S. District Court that they had commissioned a survey of possible jurors in the Boston area, as well as in New York and Washington, D.C. Some 57.9 percent of respondents in Boston reported they viewed Tsarnaev as “definitely guilty,” compared with 51.7 percent in Springfield, Massachusetts, 47.9 percent in New York and 37.4 percent in D.C. Protesters angry over T shut-out Youth pass. Demonstrators are demanding cheaper rides for young people. Protesters said they were frustrated on Wednesday after being shut out of a public MassDOT board meeting where they had planned to voice ideas on how to pilot a $10 MBTA pass for passengers between the ages of 12 and 21. Earlier this month, more than 20 protesters from the Youth Affordabili(T) Coalition were arrested for trespassing after refusing to leave the Department of Transportation building after it closed for the day. Twenty-five YAC members planned to testify at Wednesday’s meeting, but most were told the room was at capacity. “I’ve been to plenty of [T] meetings before, and they are
always packed,” said YAC member Kalila Barnett, who was one of three arrestees allowed to speak. “The room was definitely not packed. When I first walked in there were empty seats, though I had just been told that I could not go in.” “That was disturbing to us,” said Alternatives for Community and Environment Political Director Lee Matsueda, who did not make it inside the meeting. “It didn’t feel good.” As part of the 2015 Fares Work Plan, MBTA General Manager Beverly Scott on Wednesday called for a feasibility study of youth fare programs to be completed by the end of 2014, but organizers said they want a firmer commitment. “On our end there are no guarantees. That’s a major concern for us,” Matsueda said. MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

Amazon unveils its smartphone Device. Fire Phone continues Amazon’s evolution from online book seller to technology titan. Amazon.com Inc. jumped into the smartphone market with a handset called Fire Phone that is closely tied to the Web retailer’s other services, ramping up competition with Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. Amazon Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos said at an event in Seattle today that Fire Phone, which is black with a rubber frame and 4.7-inch display, will give consumers direct access to other devices and services from the company. The handset features 3-D viewing and image-recognition technology to make it simpler for users to buy items from Amazon’s Web store. “You have to be patient, you have to work at it and you have to obsess about the smallest of details,” Bezos said at the event, referring to Amazon’s hardware approach. He said he had been asked for years when Amazon would have a phone, and waited until the company could roll out something unique. Fire Phone will join Amazon’s ecosystem of devices so that when a consumer is watching a movie using the company’s set-top box, the

phone can pull up the actors and other information about what’s being viewed through the IMDB service that is owned by the Web retailer. The 3-D viewing capabilities give images a deeper perspective and will work on apps like maps or when shopping through Amazon’s store, the company said. It will create a more immersive experience for programs like games.
Some of the features: •
The handset’s image-recognition technology, called “Firefly,” will let the device figure out what a customer is looking at so the user can buy it online. It recognizes more than 100 million items, with consumers simply taking a picture of a book, DVD or other product to link back to Amazon’s store.

The phone will have audio recognition for movies and TV shows, which Amazon also carries.

Native American slur. Patent Office cancels trademarks of NFL’s Redskins The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has canceled the federal trademarks for the National Football League’s Washington Redskins because they disparage Native Americans, the agency said on Wednesday. The decision by a Patent Office administrative tribunal followed years of criticism by Native Americans and others. Five Native Americans had petitioned to overturn six Redskins trademarks, and evidence showed that “redskins” was disparaging of Native Americans, the Patent Office said in a statement. The decision strips the franchise of legal presumption of ownership and the ability to use the federal trademark symbol and block importation of counterfeit Redskins goods. Mel Gibson reportedly also dislikes Ukrainians.
Mel Gibson’s bitter legal battle with ex Oksana Grigorieva has apparently soured him on Russian and Ukrainian women in general. “He doesn’t communicate with Ukrainian or Russian girls anymore. If Mel knows you’re from there, he kind of just turns around and leaves,” actress Natalie Burn, who plays Gibson’s wife in “The Expendables 3,” says, according to Star magazine. And that became a problem, because Burn herself was born in the Ukraine. “The producer was very nice, and he advised me not to tell him,” she says, explaining that when Gibson asked if she was Brazilian she replied, “Yeah, that works.”

By covering up her tattoo of soon-to-be ex-husband Antonio Banderas’s name with foundation, she made it clear that we’re not going to see any reconciliation. It looks like a bad Photoshop job, but it’s really just a bad makeup job. FYI, the wedding ring wasn’t on her finger either. It hasn’t even been two weeks since the couple announced their divorce. ‘Jersey Boys’ Admit it: You always suspected Dirty Harry would helm the film of that long-running musical about the squeaky-clean-sounding (but actually super pottymouthed and mob-connected) ’60s radio staples The Four Seasons. Clint Eastwood directs four-part harmonies but doesn’t, alas, sing, like he did in 1969’s “Paint Your Wagon.

‘Think Like a Man Too’ The third Kevin Hart picture of 2014 is also the second with Hart and Michael Ealy, both returning for the follow-up to the surprise 2012 hit. Here, the boys — and also, the ladies — hit Vegas and, let’s hope, pay less attention to Steve Harvey’s self-help source and instead just make blue jokes.
3
‘The Rover’ Australian filmmaker David Michod follows up “Animal Kingdom with another crime picture, this one set in a dystopian future in which a loner (Guy Pearce) teams up with a gang member (Robert Pattinson) to hunt down some baddies in the continent’s endless and oppressive Outback.
4
‘Ivory Tower’ Documentarian Andrew Rossi (“Page One: Inside the New York Times) turns from newspapers to higher education, exploring the high costs of college and asking if these days it’s worth it. (Spoiler: Probably not.)

‘22 Jump Street’ Worried that this followup to the 2012 desecration of the ’80s Johnny Depp show will be a weak sequel? So is the film! This time undercover cops Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum go to college. But instead of endless jabs at beer pong, most of the jokes mock the very idea of sequels, especially ones that repeat the first one or blow up the budget to ludicrous sizes.

‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ Where “22 Jump Street
mocks repeating a surprise hit, this sequel to the lighthearted animated picture about Viking kids with American accents riding on cute dragons does something completely (or somewhat completely) different. It goes weirdly dark, with our heroes (led by Jay Baruchel) fighting a gang of evil dragon kidnappers. Cate Blanchett also does some very serious voice work.
9
‘Obvious Child’ The hoped-for breakout film for Jenny Slate (sociopathic Mona-Lisa on “Parks and Recreation), this indie comedy stars the actress as a woman who is dumped, fired and knocked up. Then she schedules her abortion for Valentine’s Day.
10
‘We Are the Best!’ Lukas Moodysson made one of the great, completely non-condescending teen films — 2000’s “Show Me Love — and his latest does the same for tomboyish tweens. Three girls with short hair start a punk band, and if their band isn’t the best then the film kind of is.

He’s spent years planted firmly in the public eye thanks to his double duty on ’90s nice-fest sitcom “Full House and “America’s Funniest Home Videos, the pre-YouTube place to catch videos of people hurting themselves in creative ways. And thanks to a searingly perverse take on the titular joke in the documentary “The Aristocrats, he’s also well-known as one of the world’s premiere purveyors of what we’ll call “lewd stand-up, since this is a family publication. The comedian/ famed TV dad heads to the Wilbur on Saturday, but also has a new book out, called, fittingly, “Dirty Daddy. In it, he addresses, as he often has to, how one man can be both an infamously filthy comedian and a famously nice TV dad to those who grew up watching him. But he also talks a lot about the tragedy that has followed the Saget family over the years, which may be less well known to the public, but was influential in him having such an off-kilter sense of humor. Getting a lipstick to stay in place is difficult enough when water isn’t involved, but these hold their own no matter what. Googling “waterproof mascara” garners more than 2 million results, but finding one that comes off as easily as regular mascara is more of a challenge. Step into the spotlight and take the leading role in your own sex life. This summer, you could learn a lot from kinky people. To help partners discover and communicate their desires, sex educators, sex therapists and couple’s counselors borrowed a tool from sexual kinksters: the “Yes, No, Maybe” list. It’s an easy way to take inventory of and gauge your lover’s level of interest in new sexual activities. Here are three steps to get started with a “Yes, No, Maybe” list of your own.
1
Brainstorm activities Handcuffs, spanking, dirty talk, face slapping, pinching and hair-pulling are just a few items that could be up for your consideration. Together with your partner, whip up a list of every sexual activity you can possibly imagine— whether or not it piques your or your partner’s interest. Hold off on judgments. (That’s the

Judge your list Be opinionated. Come to conclusions about what you do or do not want done to your body. Make a copy of the sexy list so you each have one. Finish filling it out alone. Next
to each activity, write “Yes” if you would like to perform the activity on your lover or have he or she perform it on you. Mark “Maybe” if you are unsure. Pick “No” if you are not interested. This ensures that your list reflects your interests without your partner’s influ-

Relationships. Do your siblings matter when it comes to finding true love? A new study finds that middle child syndrome carries over into the dating world. According to a report by dating site PlentyOfFish, middle children were least likely to leave the site in a relationship, while younger siblings were less likely to pursue higher education. Finally, only children were less likely to pursue higher education and to make an income over $50,000. Firstborn children statistically come out on top across the board. Not only are they more likely to leave the dating site in a relationship, but also are most likely to make an income over $100,000 a year. PlentyOfFish collected data from 7.6 million subjects; the users ranged in age from 25 to 45 and reside in Canada and the U.S. “The one finding that surprised me was single children, that they had disadvantages in income size, pursuit of higher education and in finding a relationship,” says PlentyOfFish public relations manager and dating coach Sarah Gooding. Gooding also sheds light on the motivation behind the study. “The PlentyOfFish

research team is constantly working to make improvements on our matching algorithms, to help find matches for successful relationships,” she says. “Our motivation is always to help our users to find a match and leave the site in happy and fulfilling relationships.” “I have looked at other studies around birth orders and they do seem to suggest that firstborns have advantages in terms of income and higher education, and our study supports that. [It] also suggests that firstborns have an advantage when it comes to finding a relationship,” Gooding concludes. RACHEL LEE

A fat cat in the art world A Russian artist has become a viral sensation after adding her chubby tabby cat into famous masterpieces. Svetlana Petrova, from St. Petersburg, transports the feline Internet meme into high culture’s painterly canvases of the likes of Leonardo da Vinci, Marc Chagall and Titian. We caught up with Svetlana to learn about her creations. Cats in high art? You’ve got to be kitten me ... [Laughs] No, it’s quite serious, actually. After my mother died in 2008 and left me her cat Zarathustra, I went into a deep depression. But a friend of mine wanted to cheer me up and so suggested doing something fun with the cat, like dressing him in costumes for a photo session. But he was so fat that he couldn’t fit into anything. Instead, I decided to Photoshop him into works of art.

Feline fine art. Svetlana Petrova is sick of ugly Internet memes and she’s doing something about it. ANTHONY JOHNSTON

It’s fine art-meets-“Lolcats.” Are you a big fan of Internet memes? I love the concept. If I were to return to university I’d write a thesis on it. But I want to make memes that are pretty to look at. Many memes are just plain ugly. Why do you think cats have such a visual appeal? Cats are the universal mode of communication. We may all speak different languages but we’re all lovers of cats. They’re a way of bringing us together to do good. For example, two years ago there was Hank, a cat that ran for the U.S. Senate. For his campaign, I helped design some fake dollar bills with his picture on them. The project raised a lot of money for animal charities in the U.S. and Russia. So we managed to do good, not through people but through a cat.
Ukraine’s human crisis plays out every day in the news, but there’s hidden suffering in the ongoing conflict: animals left to die. Not only did ousted Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych abandon 2,000 captive animals on his 343-acre estate when he fled to Russia in February, but thousands of Ukrainian zoo and safari park animals are starving. “Several months ago, the government shut down funding to most of their city’s zoos and other programs,” says Lawrence Anthony Earth Organization’s international president, Barbara Wiseman. The nature conservancy organization formed following Lawrence Anthony’s 2003 Baghdad Zoo animal rescue during the Iraq War. Lionel de Lange, a South African businessman who moved to Ukraine in 2006, contacted the LAEO and formed a Ukrainian chapter. Ukrainian-Russian tensions make rescue work dangerous, though. The LAEO’s recent delivery of almost four tons of meat to Crimea’s Taigan Animal Safari Park to save 62 lions and other big cats meant confronting militia checkpoints. They made it just in time. “The park owner resorted to slaughtering the animals in his petting zoo to feed the lions,” says Wiseman. “We are raising funds to do another delivery, because they still do not have a solution as yet.” Among other things, the LAEO works to achieve worldwide solutions to war’s animal victims and hopes the United Nations will pass the Wildlife

Animals in Ukraine remain at high risk. “If all-out civil war breaks out, this will very much be the same as Baghdad,” warns Wiseman. “We want to make sure not one animal perishes in the present Ukraine crisis. For those familiar with what Dr. Anthony had to deal with in Baghdad, you know how quickly things can get very bad. In just nine days, before he arrived that zoo went from 600 animals down to 35.” For now, early intervention by de Lange and the LAEO has spared Ukraine’s captive animals. “Lionel is really a one-ofa-kind individual,” says Wiseman. “He is working very hard to keep now more than 10,000 animals from harm and starvation.” LINDA CLARKE

Live outside. A guide to the best — and sometimes free — open-air shows in the city this summer.
Summer in the City Music Series Ongoing, Boston Harbor Hotel In addition to its Friday movie series, the Boston Harbor Hotel features free live music in front of its waterfront restaurant beginning in the summer. Tuesdays are soul, Wednesdays are rat pack and Thursdays are blues. It’s fun to stay for an extended period to watch the performers rise or fall depending on the tides as the dock/stage conforms to nature’s will. But when Sweet Tooth & the Sugar Babies take the stage, you will conform to another sort of nature’s will: the will to groove.
Phantom Gourmet BBQ & Music Festival, featuring The Mighty Mighty Bosstones Saturday, City Hall Plaza The stakes are high for this gig. Firstly, there’s obviously good grub if the Andelman Brothers are putting their Phantom Gourmet moniker on it. Secondly, it’s head Bosstone Dicky Barrett’s 50th birthday, and thirdly, the warmup acts — Gaslight Anthem and Barrence Whitfield & the Savages — put on such killer live shows that we might want to reconsider the phrase “warmup acts.”
Landmarks Orchestra Classical Concerts Wednesdays, The Hatch Shell Boston Landmarks Orchestra director Christopher Wilkins has put together a
stellar program. It opens July 16 with the premiere of “At the River,” which makes sense because you’re right by the Charles while you listen, and “On the Waterfront,” which also makes sense because, well, see reason No. 1. Other highlights of the season include Boston Lyric Orchestra (Aug. 6) and a celebration of the bicentennial of “The Star Spangled Banner” (Aug. 27).
Arts in the Arcade Saturdays, Samuel Adams Park Every Saturday from noon to 7 p.m., Samuel Adams Park comes alive with both visual artists and musicians showcasing their talents. The musical programming kicks off July 12 with Irish harpist Aine Minogue.
Boston Pops July 3 and 4, The Hatch Shell
Maybe you’ve heard of these guys? Apparently they play the Hatch Shell every Independence Day? Har har har. Obviously, it’s always packed, so if you want to see the fireworks while listening to the Pops on the 4th, you have to watch it on TV or sit on the Esplanade from 7 a.m. on. Or you can go to the preview performance the night before, though there will only be fireworks on the 3rd if you rub your eyes really hard.
Pretty Things Beer Tasting & Local Music Fest July 5, Georges Island The Pretty Things mentioned in the title refers to the small brewing company which puts on this event. The company will let revelers sample its beer and ale, while The Sea The Sea supply the tunes. The Sea The Sea are

Concerts in the Courtyard Wednesdays at 6 p.m.; Fridays at noon, Boston Public Library There’s no better way to spend a lunch hour at the end of the week than decompressing in the courtyard of the Boston Public Library as you listen to live music from almost every genre (except any genre that could be considered abrasive — free jazz, gangsta rap, hardcore punk, death metal, etc. — because, ya know, it’s still the library). On July 11, check out Erika Van Pelt (no relation to Linus or Lucy). You may remember her kicking butt with Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory” on “American Idol” two years ago.
Blue Hills Bank Pavilion Ongoing Several corporate naming rights ago, there was nothing to do near this amphitheater. But a bar crawl to or from the venue is now a legitimate option. This summer is packed with artists whose heydays may be behind them, but there are also acts still on the rise like Chance the Rapper and Diplo (Aug. 10) and Royksopp and Robyn (Aug. 22).
a local duo with modern folky leanings and a knack for sweet harmonies.
Revels Boston Harbor Cruise and Sing II Aug. 12, Rowes Wharf A sunset cruise on the Harbor? Yeah, you could do that, but wouldn’t it be a little boring without a sing-along component where you’re singing sea shanties? Thought so. Revels music director George Emlen and David Coffin lead the sing-along.
Mamadou Aug. 15, City Hall Plaza It’s summer, the season where we pretend the weather is this beautiful all year and we listen to reggae as if we’re someplace where the weather actually is this beautiful all year, like Senegal, West Africa. OK, so maybe you don’t consciously pretend you’re in Senegal, West Africa, but the music of Mamadou will transport you to the homeland of local singer Mamadou Diop.
Boston Calling Festival Sept. 5-7, City Hall Plaza The fourth installment of this local festival success story features what is arguably the strongest lineup yet. The National and Neutral Milk Hotel headline on Friday, Lorde and Childish Gambino headline on Saturday and Nas (with The Roots) and The Replacements headline on Sunday. PAT HEALY @metrousmusic

robber barons’ (Metro, June 18) Financial thugs are too big to fail and jail, as letter writer Joseph Dupont points out. The reason? It’s the system, not anyone individual. Our current debt-based monetary system necessitates the lies, deception and corruption. Why? Because financial debt with interest is mathematically impossible to pay back in the aggregate. How? When homeowners or students or even businesses borrow money, they are creating “NEW” money in the system/economy. Believe it or not, banks do not lend
is either out to lunch or in someone’s pocket. It’s too bad that most of the media is also so blinded by their own agenda that they don’t care to tackle any of these situations. What happened to the “ballsy pressmen” of the past? No “balls,” I guess!
Re: ‘Camelot now ruled by robber barons’ (Metro, June 18) Letter writer Joseph DuPont hits the nail squarely on the head with his assessment of our recent presidents and Wall Street barons. The situation with the Fed profiteering off the national debt is disgraceful in itself. However, the fact that our leaders allow this to continue is very disturbing. All of Congress

Lands of opportunity MLB. The Sox begin a brutal road stretch Thursday, but can make hay by simply playing .500 ball. There’s been a great deal of hyperbole tossed around in the past month or so about the chances of a postseason berth for the Red Sox in 2014. On the morning of Memorial Day Monday, with the Sox having lost 10 games in a row, their season was dubbed “over,” by most. They then won seven games in a row and many said their march back to October had just begun. Then there was another five-game losing streak to start the month of June, and the pessimists were once again vocal. Since those extreme days, the Sox are 6-4. Not great. Not bad. Slightly above average. If the Red Sox can maintain that “slightly above average” pace over the next 10 days, the glass-half-full Sox fans will be happy at their 4th of July cookouts. A daunting road trip against the A’s, Mariners and Yankees begins Thursday in Oakland (10 p.m., NESN). If Boston can go 5-5 on the trip, it will almost certainly remain just five games out of a wild card spot with 80 games left on its schedule. If the Sox go 3-7, 2-8 or 1-9 — then the pessimists may fi-
Sensational sweep The Red Sox completed a sweep of the Twins in dramatic fashion Wednesday as Mike Napoli and David Ortiz hit back-to-back homers in the 10th inning for a 2-1 Sox win. •

nally have a legit case. The Red Sox have an opportunity to show some semblance of that 2013 magic carried over to 2014 in this upcoming stretch if they can just hang with three American League teams that are legit playoff contenders. The A’s are the best of the bunch, owning the best record in the AL at 43-28. Oakland currently has three pitchers with more than five wins and an ERA below 3.00, and the Sox will face two of the three. Lefty Scott Kazmir, who is enjoying an all-time bounce-back year, is 8-2 on the year and sports a 2.05 ERA. He will go Thursday against Jake Peavy (1-4, 4.53 ERA). Jesse Chavez, who owns a 6-4 record with a 2.93 ERA, will throw Friday for the A’s against Felix Doubront (2-4, 5.12 ERA). The Mariners (37-34), who host the Sox for three games beginning Monday, are playing their best baseball of the season as they are 10-5 in the month of June. Robinson Cano (.327 batting average) has
been highly productive for Seattle lately, registering at least one hit in 13 of the 16 games played in June. The Sox will be in good shape if they show up to Yankee Stadium on June 27 with three or four combined wins under their belts against the two aforementioned AL West teams. Over the next two weeks, the Yankees (36-33) will be slugging it out with AL East teams exclusively, so there is plenty of opportunity to make up some ground in the division.
and one point against Portugal (June 22) or Germany (June 26). The one point would give them four overall and likely put them in a tiebreaker scenario for the second spot in the group. If that one point comes against Germany — after a loss to Portugal — it could get ugly. In other words, they really need to get a point against Portugal. Even if Portugal beats Ghana, they would have four points and face a tough goal differential due to their 4-0 opening loss to Germany.
The United States picked up a huge win over Ghana in its opening game of the 2014 World Cup. The loss was critical to the team advancing from Group G, but it’s far from a done deal. So what are the chances the USA advances out of the proverbial “Group of Death”? The official number, according to Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight, is 63 percent. We take another glance at what it will take:
1
Get a point First and foremost, they need to get at least a draw

Root for Germany It seems odd to root for another team in your own group, but due to their 4-0 win over Portugal, U.S. fans should just pull for Germany
to win the group. Remember, the idea is to advance, not necessarily to win the group. Group G faces Group H first in the knockout stage, and the seeding in Group H won’t be deadly regardless of rank. Belgium, Russia, South Korea and Algeria make up Group H. The winner is expected to be Belgium, but this is one of the weakest groups overall and is not top-heavy. Belgium is ranked No. 11 in the FIFA World Rankings. The USA is ranked No. 13. The FIFA rankings have plenty of problems, but the point is Belgium is not a disaster to avoid like topheavy Group A (Brazil, Mexico, Cameroon, Croatia) or Group F (Argentina, Iran, Nigeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina). So let Germany beat Ghana as badly

as it wants in its next game. Germany would likely hold any tiebreakers with the U.S. anyway if it loses or draws in its next two.

Just win, baby This is where it gets simple: The U.S. basically just needs to win against Portugal or Germany and be golden for the next round. Either Ghana or Portugal would need to win both of its games to also earn six points and force a tiebreaker. Portugal would still be in a huge deficit — again because of that minus-4 goal differential — matched up with the Americans. If Ghana beats Germany and Portugal and overcomes its minus-1 goal differential, all the U.S. can do is tip its cap. MARK OSBORNE

Spain given the early boot in Brazil There will be a new World Cup champion in a few weeks’ time as defending champ Spain fell to Chile 2-0 on Wednesday. It was the second straight defeat for Spain, which was blasted last Friday by the Netherlands, 5-1. Charles Aranguiz and Eduardo Vargas each found the net for Chile in the victory over Spain. Spain became the first reigning champ in World Cup history to be knocked out of the tournament after just two games.

DON’T CHASE STATS FROM 2013
You won’t get any points for last year’s stats. It’s amazing how many fantasy football owners forget that simple concept on draft day every season. A surefire way to blow your chances at winning the league is to blindly look at the 2013 season and expect the same thing in 2014. In many instances, past performance is not an indicator of future results. Chase the tails of these guys and get burned.

No Knowshon Knowshon Moreno was arguably the MVP of the 2013 fantasy season, coming off the waiver wire to finish as fantasy’s No. 5 running back. Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton has the talent of a good game manager. But under pass-happy offensive coordinator Jay Gruden, he was allowed to throw the ball 586 times — eighthmost in the league. That led to a shocking QB5 finish in fantasy. With Gruden now in Washington, new offensive coordinator Hue Jackson is going to reel Dalton in. He’ll be more of a caretaker, seeing his attempts slashed while watching Gio Bernard and Jeremy Hill carry the load. Dalton is a backup at the deepest position in fantasy.
“E” is for empty
The Patriots targeted Julian Edelman 105 times last season out of necessity more than desire. If it weren’t for Aaron Hernandez’s murders, Rob Gronkowski’s inability to stay on the field, Shane Vereen’s wrist injury and Danny Amendola’s groin woes, he never would have emerged as a PPR stud. Tom Brady knows that in order to put crooked numbers on the board, he needs a more diverse attack that doesn’t just check down to Edelman. Expect something closer to 70 catches than 100.
