Aaron Swartz documentary to be released this Friday Movie night. The film will be available online and have a release on limited big screens, including the Somerville Theatre. Shortly after Internet-sharing activist Aaron Swartz took his own life, countless messages of condolences appeared on blogs and social media mourning his loss. Now, a full-length documentary about Swartz called “The Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz,” will be released Friday and play at the Somerville Theatre. The online mourning and the film focusing on Swartz are both things that Noah Swartz believes his brother would have been surprised by. “I don’t think it’s something he would have expected,” Noah Swartz said. “I don’t think he thought the Internet cared about him or cared about his role in the Internet.” Swartz helped co-found Reddit, as well as the group Demand Progress, and creat-

ed an early version of RSS. He was 26 when he took his own life in 2013 while awaiting trial on federal charges that he allegedly stole millions of academic articles from a private database after hacking into an MIT network. The movie was funded in part by roughly 1,500 people who donated more than $93,000 on Kickstarter. Swartz’s brother, father and others appear in the film to talk about him and his efforts. Besides his family, those who worked with and influenced Swartz, including Harvard professor Lawrence Lessig, also appear in the film. It’s a mix of sit-down interviews with those who were close to him and home movies of a young Swartz showing an early interest in and knack for computers and the Internet. The film follows Swartz as he grows up and makes the switch from creating things for people to advocating on behalf of people. “He made this turn, he made this decision to use his skills for public interest and public good. That’s a pretty inspiring approach,” said Brian Knappenberger, the film’s director. “I hope people walk out of the theater wondering about their skills. You don’t have to be a genius computer hacker, you know? Everyone has skills. It’s how do you put those skills into the public interest and the public good.” The movie premiered during the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and received good reviews. It will be shown in some theaters and

Sentencing. Judge allows scammers to choose fate After spending the next three years in jail for trying to defraud the One Fund Boston, two South End brothers will have to spend 468 hours performing community service for amputees and people with brain injuries. In an extremely rare move, Suffolk Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Locke let Branden Mattier, 23, and Domunique Grice, 28, choose their fate during Monday’s sentencing hearing: five years in jail or three years and a day in jail, three years of probation and six hours of targeted community service every other Saturday for the three years after their release. Mattier and Grice, who were found guilty earlier this month of charges including conspiracy to commit larceny, chose less jail time and community service. “Community service will be focused on serving those injured by either loss of limb or brain injury — the very population that Mr. Mattier and Mr. Grice sought to defraud,” Locke said. “That may

include, I don’t know, building handicapped ramps. It may include serving as an aide at a rehabilitation facility. It may include changing bedpans, but it is serving that population of injured individuals.” Mattier filed a false claim to the One Fund shortly after the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings that named his already deceased aunt as an amputee. Investigators discovered it was a false claim and prosecutors said Mattier and Grice exchanged text messages in which they discussed buying new Mercedes Benz cars as they waited for their $2.1 million claim. Mattier, who has a 3-monthold daughter, talked in court about growing up without a father and wanting to be a good father for his child. He apologized to his family for putting them through the ordeal. Grice said he’s learned from the experience and apologized, but Locke took issue with the men not specifically apologizing to the victims. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

A Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate student who went missing while attending a workshop in India has been found dead. Kaitlin Goldstein, 28, a fourth-year student at MIT, was found Saturday in a ravine below where she had gone running on June 14, according to MIT. She had not been seen since that day. Her parents traveled to India to search for her and they said she apparently slipped while running on a loose rock and slid off of a cliff, MIT said in a news release. METRO

A union that counts fast food, hotel and casino industry workers among its growing membership plans this week to hold its national convention in Boston, where Gov. Deval Patrick, Sen. Also in federal court Monday, a lawyer for another friend of Tsarnaev says he rejected a plea deal offered to his client who he said “knows he’s not guilty” of obstruction.

Azamat Tazhayakov is accused of removing items from Tsarnaev’s dorm room after the deadly bombing. Tazhayakov’s attorney did not disclose the terms of the plea deal, but said he is confident the 21-year-old will be acquitted. Jury selection is slated to begin next week in Tazhayakov’s trial. How to get rich in the stock market

MILLIONAIRE

TIMOTHY SYKES

I turned a few thousand dollars into a few million dollars. Then I turned several students into millionaires, too. Now, people always ask me for stock picks. Rather than give out stock picks, though, I prefer to teach people a replicable strategy — it’s better to teach a man to fish, right? Here are the basics on how my students and I beat the market year in and year out. As you read my advice, don’t be shocked if my tips go against conventional investing wisdom. If you want to get rich in the stock market, you can’t do what everyone else is doing.

TIMOTHYSYKES.COM Timothy Sykes is a millionaire stock trader and entrepreneur.

Never go for Tim’s picks of the week

home runs No matter what your favorite kind of stock is, learn to take 10 to 30 percent profits when you have them, and don’t go for the lower odds of 100 percent-plus wins. Even though it feels great to have a big winner and compound those gains by holding for years, by aiming for home runs, you often strike out and fail to grow your accounts by taking solid, if not spectacular, profits when you have them. After some initial glory, too many people hold on too long and feel “married” to their investments, so their gains turn into losses.

I listened to a few awesome interviews on Secret Entourage, a motivational website for entrepreneurs and people in start-ups.

Most companies have enticing overall stories, but I find stocks that have had hugely positive news recently — such as betterthan-expected earnings, a new contract with a large company or a successful product launch — rise faster than the rest because meaningful news has “legs” that can influence a stock for weeks or even months.

Don’t diversify: Invest and trade like a sniper

For exclusive commentary, c visit Metro.us/blogs. Instead of investing in five to 10 stocks, I usually only have one or two at any one time because like a sniper, I aim small, miss small and when I’m right, I hit my target and move on. I’m not saying go “all in” on any one stock; I just use a small portion of my account on one or two stocks when they have meaningful and positive news. Do this again and again, even if you lose sometimes, and you will beat the stock market like my students and I do.

Whether Lana Del Rey actually thinks it’s cool for singers to die young, she told The Guardian that’s what she thinks, so it’s out there to stay, no takebacksies. You know who definitely doesn’t think it’s cool for singers to die young? Frances Bean Cobain! The daughter of Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain, the latter of whom died two decades ago at the age of 27, before Frances Bean was even 2, took to Twitter to share her thoughts on the matter. “I’ll never know my father because he died young & it becomes a desirable feat because ppl like u think it’s ‘cool’” she tweeted at Lana Del Rey. “Well, it’s f—ing not. Embrace life, because u only get one life. The ppl u mentioned wasted that life. Don’t be 1 of those ppl.” Cue the LDR supporters, who then accused FBC of attacking their hero! (Can we get these initials-asnicknames thing to stick?) But Frances was quick to tweet that she is also a supporter, since, duh, she doesn’t want Lana Del Rey to die young. “I’m not attacking anyone. I have no animosity towards Lana, I was just trying to put things in perspective from personal experience.”

Whitney Cummings is doing just fine. The comedian is back with a new stand-up special, but knows her canceled sitcom, “Whitney, may be on people’s minds. She addresses the topic early in her special, mentioning that she’s glad to be back doing stand-up after working in TV for a few years. After the audience cheers, she responds with a chastisement that none of them watched the show. It’s a funny moment, but when talking to Cummings, it’s clear she’s not holding a grudge. “People come up to me and they’re like, ‘I’m so sorry about your TV show.’ I’m like, ‘I’m fine?’ They treat me like I have some terminal illness or something. We did, I think, 45 episodes. To me, that’s a big success, says Cummings.

“When young comedians ask me advice, I say the first thing you should say when you get onstage should always be what the audience is thinking, whether it’s about your personal appearance, or whatever it is — just address it so that they’re not thinking about it or distracted by it. Part of why Cummings is ready to move on is that she can do more stand-up. “Doing a show is all-consuming. You really don’t have time [to perform], which is hard, because doing stand-up is really where you figure out your point of view on things, she says. “So being creative without doing stand-up, it’s almost like body building without going to the gym. Actually, she adds, comedians aren’t too dissimilar from workout addicts chasing their high: “Doing stand-up satiates some kind of need in you to either be heard or to connect with people, or the dopamine high, whatever it is. Standups don’t really have a choice in the matter. This is how we function.

Cummings says it’s freeing to return to stand-up, a world with less concern about propriety than television. “Literally nothing is olimits. You’re able to go to the edge. The edge is my comfort zone, for whatever reason,â€? she says. Still, she’s a little thrown by those who call her material racy. “The only thing that I’m talking about that is racy or edgy is sex, the thing that

we all do, all the time. It’s so weird to me that that’s edgy, says Cummings. “There’s this thing where honesty is kinda taboo. When people get near the truth, or comedians or artists get near the truth, people get uncomfortable. Are we there yet?

Make the journey part of the fun “The vacation starts long before you get to the destination,” Hoefle says. “Children live in the moment, so you can’t rely on

just talking about how much fun it will be when you get there.” Luckily most cars are equipped with DVD players these days, but Hoefle has a more creative way of keeping children entertained without just relying

on movies and books. “Before the trip, I make a few ‘surprise bags’ full of cheap goodies for the kids. Every couple of hours, they get to open one. It gives them something to explore and play with,” she says.

“The most memorable moments are often the simple things,” Hoefle says, “things you didn’t see coming.” When you don’t overschedule and allow for moments to just happen is when the best memories are made.

How to truly relax on a family vacation Tips. Make everything from the long car trip to planning the day’s activities run smoothly. “Family vacation” can seem like an oxymoron. How can you possibly relax with the kids around? But lo and behold, Vicki Hoefle, parenting expert and author of “Duct Tape Parenting,” found a way. Put her tips into practice and you might remember something from your trip other than screaming kids and wanting a glass of wine.

Get everyone’s ‘top three’ before you leave While you’re still in the planning stage, Hoefle advises that each family member list three things he or she wants to do, three things he or she wants to see and three places he or she wants to eat. Then when you get there, hold mini family

meetings every morning and pick one thing from each list when planning the day. When you make the kids part of the process, they are more willing to wait until the afternoon or when it’s “their turn” because they helped create the plan.

Schedule in some down-time Having a two-hour rest period in the middle of the day might seem like wasted time when there’s so much to cram in, but no one will have fun if the kids are cranky. “Instead of saying, ‘You get grouchy in the afternoon,’ say ‘You need a rest time so you don’t get grouchy,’” Hoefle recommends.

Dreamed-about snapshots like this can actually happen. You know, after everyone gets a nap. / COLOURBOX

Don’t expect everyone to go to bed at the same time

If you have kids with different bedtimes, booking connecting rooms will make things a lot easier. If not, it’s still best to split the younger kids up from the older ones when it’s time for the little ones to go to bed. One parent can take the older kids down to the lobby to play games or watch a movie on the computer, while the other parent gets the younger kids to bed. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

GALVESTON STILL RISES Go for the pecan pie at Gaido’s Seafood Restaurant. / PROVIDED

Downtown Galveston is a popular shopping area, with numerous boutiques and historical attractions situated in grand old buildings close to the cruise docks and bay. / PROVIDED BY GALVESTON ISLAND CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU

Engulfed. After each hurricane, Texas’ eastern vacation spot remakes itself better than ever.

An observant eye will see the signs everywhere: “1900 — this high. 1919 — this high. 1961 — this high. 2008 — this high.” They’re water marks on houses, churches, restaurants, museums and shops. Their heights vary, but they always mean one thing: “The water was this high, but look at us now.” Galveston, Texas, began as a bustling port city, back when Victorian ideals held sway with Western culture. The care, pride and wealth are obvious in the old houses that still stand, for whom the water never got so very high. Visitors can tour many of the best and ogle the rest along pleasant, sunlit streets. These were houses built on the premises of invincibility and optimism. Students of history know it didn’t last. The last year of the 19th century brought with it a hurricane that still holds the record as the deadliest natural disaster in United States history. Thousands died and the island was flattened. Those few homes that still stand were saved when the smashed detritus of every other building in the vicinity created a de facto

Community pillars donated vast sums, and officials and residents banded together to make the island great again. And when the next hurricane hit, and the next, they cleared away the rubble and started over. When Hurricane Ike hit in 2008, the island took it hard. But, as is the Galveston custom, residents rebuilt better and sturdier. Six years later, there are few signs that troubled waters ever swept across the city — except the ones that residents display on their walls, porches and stilts, markers of human resilience.

A brick pillar along Pier 21 shows the high-water lines from various hurricanes. The mark from 1900 sits far above the others. KATE THOMAS, METRO

One of the glories of Texan cuisine is the state’s take on breakfast. Migas? Got it. Crab cakes? Got it. Southern-style eggs over corn cakes with ranchero sauce and cheese? Yes, PLEASE.

This is about as historical and blue-blood as a restaurant can make itself, and it takes its reputation as seriously as it takes its seafood, delving deeply into the Creole tradition.

FORGET LOVE, THE CELTICS SHOULD RE-BUILD IN DRAFT

Maybe you’ve seen those “Who’s next? Celtics billboards around town the past few weeks. On the billboards are a couple of basketball-playing silhouettes, set to a green backdrop, and there’s more than a few question marks scattered about. Conspiracyminded Celtics fans have taken the silhouettes as some sort of clue to the potential landing of Kevin Love. The original intent of the billboards, however, was probably just to get fans excited for the upcoming draft (Thursday, 7:30 p.m., ESPN). The Celtics hold the No. 6 and No. 17 picks in what is considered to be the best draft class of the past five years or so. But ever since Love spent a full weekend boosting the local economy via alcohol sales tax a month ago, it has become almost expected that

There is a chance Joel Embiid could fall to the Celtics at No. 6 in the 2014 NBA Draft. / GETTY IMAGES

he would be coming to Boston. Yes, something is going to happen this week in the form of a transaction. But it might not be what the masses es want and expect. The worst-case scenario for those seeking those promised “fireworks would be for Danny Ainge to trade down (or out) in the draft. The second nd snore of a scenario would ould be for the Celtics to stay put at No. 6 and No. 17. This second scenario isn’t sexy, but it’s the most likely, and it’s probably the safest way to go. Adding the likes of a Noah Vonleh, Julius Randle or Aaron Gordon is the prudent thing to do. The Celtics could also stay the course in the long run and keep their upcoming first-round draft picks from the

Nets. Brooklyn is in a state of flux, so much so that owner Mikhail Prokhorov is rumored to be mulling the sale of the franchise. Chances are franch that those picks comtha ing to the Celtics in in 2016, 2017 (they can 2 swap with Brooklyn) aand 2018 are going tto be good, if not great. g Many say that the days o of building a championship team through the draft are over, but few teams have had the fabulous opportunity that the Celtics currently have to actually pull it off. Ainge, by most assessments a tremendous drafter, could have four or five cracks at finding the next Paul George or Paul Pierce or Dirk Nowitzki or, dare I say, LeBron over the next few years. Landing a player of that

CLASSIFIED DIRECTORY

caliber would make the Celtics contenders for the next 15 years and the C’s could eventually supplement this young stud with any sort of Tier 2 free agent, given the vast cap space that would come their way. Despite what you’ve been hearing, this is likely Ainge’s Plan A. Plan B — convincing Flip Saunders to part with Love, giving up the truckload of future assets to acquire Love, re-signing Rajon Rondo to a max deal and finding a way to lure a third superstar to Boston using the small cap space and leftover assets remaining — won’t be anything close to easy.
