WELL DONE
Here come the fireworks. It’s Fourth of July weekend, which means that the competition for the definitive Song of the Summer is really heating up. Melting pot. Despite the association with our American holiday, a surprising amount of the contenders aren’t from the States. Mix it up. Invite all your friends over and crank these tunes at your barbecue. PAGE 05 The competitors for Song of the Summer are, from left, Iggy Azalea, Nicki Minaj, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande and Lil Jon.

Allegations of teacher-student sex render officials ‘repulsed’ Abuse of a child. School and city officials said they were “repulsed and angry” by the actions perpetrated upon a 13-year-old. A female Somerville school teacher was arrested Wednesday on charges of having a sexual relationship with a 13-yearold. Alexandra Romanos, 41, of Stoneham, pleaded not guilty during her arraignment
Wednesday to charges of aggravated rape of a child and indecent assault and battery on a child, according to the Middlesex district attorney’s office. She was ordered held on $50,000 bail. School officials were made aware of the inappropriate relationship by a parent who reported it at the end of June, officials said. During an investigation by authorities, it was discovered that Romanos, a teacher at East Somerville Community School, allegedly initiated a sexual relationship with the teen. The relationship took place on and off school grounds, authorities said. “The safety and well-being

of our students is always our highest priority, so it is all the more disturbing that a teacher — the very individual most entrusted to ensure that safety on a daily basis — has allegedly blatantly violated that trust,” Mayor Joseph Curtatone said in a statement. “I commend the parent who took the right step in reporting this to school
officials. ... We will continue to cooperate with the D.A.’s investigation in any way needed.” Romanos, a teacher in Somerville for nearly seven years, was placed on administrative leave from the school. “Nothing we can say will soften the impact that such news has on a community, particularly one as dedicated to
nurturing and supporting our youth as Somerville,” Superintendent of Schools Tony Pierantozzi said in a joint statement with Curtatone. “We are repulsed and angry that someone who made an oath to uphold the highest moral standards in the execution of her responsibilities as a teacher and a role model has allegedly blatantly violated that trust.” Calls placed to numbers listed for Romanos’ home went unanswered. A message left for her lawyer was not returned by press time. MICHAEL NAUGHTON @MetroBosMike

Forecasted thunderstorms have moved the city’s annual Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular on the Esplanade to Thursday, one day before the celebration was scheduled to take place. “We’ve enjoyed a nice summer so far, and then here we are on the Fourth of July confronting two days of bad weather,” said Massachusetts State Police Colonel Timothy P. Alben at a news conference Wednesday. Plans could still change depending on Thursday’s forecast, Alben said. The concert will happen Thursday no matter what, due to contractual obligations, though there is a possibility that the fireworks could be pushed to Saturday if rain descends on the city Thursday.

Survey. Boston ranks among best cities in US Consider yourself lucky, Bostonians. Travel + Leisure readers think Boston is one of the top 10 cities in the U.S. and Canada. A new survey of the travel magazine’s readers released on Wednesday puts Boston as No. 10 on the “best city” list for America and Canada. Charleston, South Carolina, topped the list, as it did in 2013. Boston placed below other cities like Vancouver [sixth], San Francisco [fourth] and New York [ninth]. The Hub wasn’t the only
city entity to rank near the top of the magazine’s survey. The XV Beacon and Eliot Hotel ranked sixth and 10th, respectively, on the list of the best small city hotels in the U.S. Also, Boston’s Mandarin Oriental ranked tenth on the list of the best large city hotels in the U.S. The magazine’s readers were asked from December through March to rank cities based on five characteristics: sights/landmarks, culture/ arts, restaurants/food, people and value. Ariana Grande featuring Iggy Azalea Just like Pharrell Williams in the summer of 2013, Iggy Azalea has her hands in two separate collaborations that are vying for the Song of the Summer title. “Fancy” pairs her with Charli XCX — who wrote a previous summer hit, Icona Pop’s “I Love It” — for a super sing-along chorus and words that are the very stuff that Lorde successfully made fun of on last year’s “Royals.” And though “Problems” is a showcase for Ariana Grande, Iggy Iggs gets some good rhymes off. Big Sean gets an odd star turn here too, whispering “one less problem without you” against a deep sub-bass boom.

Calvin Harris Who’d’ve thunk a few years ago that DJs singing on their own songs would be a good thing? Review
‘Life Itself’ ••••• How does one review a film about the most famous film critic of all? The task would be harder if it wasn’t very good. “Life Itself” is a documentary about the late Roger Ebert and his final months before his passing last spring. Like Ebert’s prolific writing, it makes its subject universal. As promised by its title, it’s a downright
4
cosmic look at existence even as it stays strictly personal. Although the film covers Ebert’s life in great detail and with a celebratory air, it’s not afraid to delve into his lows. Chief among these are the ’70s, when Ebert would wrap up the day’s writing and then head out for all-night drinking binges. This period is still shown as fun, but also as the kind of freewheeling living that eventually becomes a drag. Director Steve James (of “Hoop
Dreams,” which Ebert championed 20 years back) gets a lot out of toggling between straight-up exposition about Ebert’s life and hanging with he and his wife, Chaz, as they prepare for the worst. These modern-day scenes have great power, observing as a materialist — who fully expected to return to the nothing from which he came — grapples with the notion that his consciousness will soon disappear. It will make you cry like a baby.
Reasons to see ‘Snowpiercer’ Dystopian thriller. This star-studded South Korean import arrives overseas quietly, receiving a modest release in America. It deserves better.
1
It’s a big movie. “Snowpiercer” isn’t a mere specialty foreign release; it’s a mainstream film. Not only that, it’s a big movie with big familiar-to-America stars. It’s 2031, and due to a reckless attempt to stop climate change the world has frozen over. Those who survived live aboard a train plowing around the world in a giant circle, which unfortunately is segmented into class: The rich and bored up front, the downtrodden and near-feral in the back. “Captain America” star Chris Evans leads the latest attempt to fight the way to the front.
2
It was a hit everywhere else. It’s “only” the 10th highestgrossing homemade South Korean film in history. No. 1 is the monster movie “The Host,” also by “Snowpiercer” director
Bong Joon-ho. This is an alternate universe blockbuster, albeit one that was famously mistreated by distributor Harvey Weinstein, who nearly released a cut that hacked out 20 minutes. Improbably, sense prevailed.
3
It masterfully mixes tone. Bong has a goofy sense of humor, but he also loves to take his films to dark places. “Snowpiercer” is a very funny satire, especially as Evans and cast progress through cars, each one a surprise that often radically changes the color scheme. Tilda Swinton is also on hand to steal the movie as one of the heartless baddies. At the same time, it’s fearless and brutal, routinely picking off characters nice and evil.

Online dating is a dirty little lie: Part 2 Real-World Love Advice
CHARLES J. ORLANDO www.theproblemismen.com Charles J. Orlando is a relationship expert and author of the best-selling book series “The Problem with Women … Is Men.” Find out more about him on his website, or visit him on Facebook for real-world love advice.
Like some people you meet online, Internet dating isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Here’s part two of my investigation into what really happens in the realm of online dating.
A predatory environment If you think your night club is the quintessential “meat market,” you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. The online dating world is fraught with pick-up artists. I interviewed 50 men who use online dating sites to meet women. Here’s a sample: From G.S. in New York: “Maybe they want a relationship,

From there, I just pour on the charm. A smile, a little shy attitude over coffee, and she’s mine.” This type of man tends to send emails out to lots of women — with the end goal of having sex.

Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author.
Romantic comedies are pervasive in our society. But from Disney to “Pretty Woman,” they are setting an unreachable goal for love. Learn more at www. goodmenproject.com.

Consider the financial operations of online dating sites The business of online dating is business, not love. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. The longer a dating site can keep you unmatched, the more it can profit. My opinion? GETTING DOWN TO BRASS TACKS WITH BRASS UNION
For years, the Precinct space in Somerville’s Union Square was a bit of an afterthought for me, with so many quality drinking destinations having opened nearby. That’s changed with the revamped Brass Union. The re-imagining of the space (from the owners of the Independent, Saloon and the soon to open River Bar in Assembly Row) now fits the expectations of the contemporary drinker. Like before, the room is separated into two areas. The front room looks like what you might call an old New York-style tavern, with dark woods, distressed mirrors and low light. The back room has been transformed into a sort of rec room, with board games, shuffle board, a table-top video game and a lounge feel. More importantly, the food and drink offerings have been brought up to date by chef Jonathan Kopacz and bar man Paulo Pereira. “I think when it comes to the cocktail program, especially, we really stepped it up a bit from what it was before, Pereira says. “I was given a lot of freedom when it came to running the list to be as creative as I wanted to, to make as much house-made syrups and sodas as I could. able, easy drinking to sweet. Then there are really spiritforward cocktails. One such spirit-forward cocktail is Satchmo’s Slur, made with Old Overholt rye, Lillet Blanc, Cynar, orange bitters, and Herbsaint absinthe. It’s bracing, bright and fragrant. Others take a more experimental bent, like the Rum and Smoke, made with Bully Boy Aged rum, smoked lime juice, orgeat and Ginjinha. “That drink is quickly becoming our most popular.

People read it on the menu and haven’t seen anything like it before, he says. To make the lime juice, he smokes the limes for an hour or two before juicing. More playful concoctions include the Jumpman Julep, made with tequila, fresh pineapple, orange and pomegranate juices and agave nectar, and topped with coconut foam and a grilled pineapple spear.

‘Everybody Talks’ Turning heads. Neon Trees front man Tyler Glenn says coming out has led to their new album having more depth with fans. Neon Trees front man Tyler Glenn has never shied away from being himself on stage, but with the release of a new album, “Pop Psychology,” he decided it was time to open up a bit more about his private life. In April, he came out as gay via a Rolling Stone
interview. And not only gay, but a gay Mormon, an unusual combination in pop culture. It capped a rough period in Glenn’s life, where he was having trouble keeping his cool on stage. With the help of a therapist and a supportive producer, Glenn decided it was time to tell the world what he’d been hiding. Glenn actually only started coming out to people in his life during the tail end of the production of “Pop Psychology.” After working with producer Tim Pagnotta on finishing the album, Pagnotta expressed some curiosity about what the new songs
were about, and Glenn decided to share his secret. “I think his reaction inspired me to tell everyone else because he responded in such a loving, almost congratulatory way, which was really something I never put together with being gay,” says Glenn. That said, he’s pleased to be a spokesman for equality for people who are both gay and religious. “A lot of the time we see in the media, like, it’s either religion or it’s being gay, and I think the two can live in the same sphere,” says Glenn. Asked if he thinks it’s
important for public figures to come out, Glenn replies honestly, “I used to not. I get people doing it on their own time, in their own way, and I don’t know everyone’s situation, but I do think it’s important.” Of course, his news has “turned a lot of heads in Utah,” where Glenn lives, but he says he’s happy to be an exemplar on this front, despite some discomfort with the idea in the past: “I’m really glad that some people feel like they have a voice now, and ... if that’s the role model I can be, then I’m comfortable with that.”
B sides
Honesty in songwriting For those wondering if Glenn was trying to hide something on prior records, he says he thinks the older songs are honest representations of who he was at the time. In the song “Teenage Sounds” off the band’s second record, “Picture Show,” the lyric “I’m sick of being called a fag because I’m queer” once reflected people’s reactions to his flamboyant style of dress. “Now that means more to me, and I think it [also] means more to [other] people,” he says. Laser show must go on for Red Sox MLB. Dustin Pedroia’s 2014 season is going a lot like his 2012 season, and that’s not a good thing. If the 2014 Red Sox are to mimic the 2012 Red Sox and ultimately finish over 20 games out of a playoff spot, rest assured there will be no late season purging of superstar, big-money players this time around. Guggenheim Baseball Management (the group that owns the LA Dodgers, with Magic Johnson as its figurehead) would no doubt be salivating over the likes of Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia right now if they were in their 2012 operating mode. Pedroia is, after all, a big baseball name and has a juicy long-term contract. The Sox inked Pedroia to a $100 million deal last summer that is supposed to keep the fourtime All-Star on Yawkey Way through 2021. Now, it’s a stretch to say the Sox are “stuck” with Pedroia, but there’s no doubt that that contract looks a world less appealing than it did one year ago in the feel-good summer of 2013. Through 84 games this season, Pedroia is batting .277
Dustin Pedroia is batting .277 this season, and his subpar numbers are a big reason why the Red Sox are slumping. / BOSTON GLOBE Quoted
“I haven’t gotten hot yet. ... You look back at every game, [and] there’s one pitch that doesn’t go your way. That’s frustrating, but when the hot streak comes, it maintains.” Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia to the Boston Globe on his struggles this season
with an on-base percentage of .346 and a slugging percentage of .383. Through 84 games last season, Pedroia was batting .322 with an OBP of .404 and a slugging mark of .441. Pedroia’s numbers this season look similar to his numbers in 2012. Through 84 games in that nightmarish Sox campaign, Pedroia hit .265 with an OBP of .324 and a slugging percentage of .394. Pedroia will likely never bang out over 20 home runs again like he did in 2011 as he has just four dingers this season. But his home run marks this year are consistent with where he was at midway through the 2013 and 2012 seasons and the low power numbers aren’t what’s worrying people. It’s the fact that Pedroia often looks overmatched at the plate and his low batting average that has Sox fans grimacing. Can Pedroia turn things around this season? Absolutely. He has three three-hit games in the past week, has looked more comfortable during his at-bats recently and it finally seems as though the sore left wrist that hampered him during the early portion of the season is something close to a nonissue. The 2014-15 Celtics roster is far from finished, but at this juncture it appears president of basketball operations Danny Ainge believes he can win big by going small. The Celtics agreed to a new contract with guard Avery Bradley this week. The deal is worth a reported $32 million over four years. The move was questioned by many basketball minds on two fronts. First, the Celtics may have too many quality chefs that
will demand minutes in their backcourt, with Rajon Rondo, Bradley and first-round draft pick Marcus Smart currently on the roster. Second, Bradley has often been injured in his NBA career — missing 22 games in 2013-14 due to ankle issues and 31 games in 2012-13 due to shoulder surgeries. “Avery had a good (201314 season),” Ainge told ESPN at the conclusion of this past season. “I’ve seen improvement in Avery this year. The biggest issue with Avery has just been health. He plays hard, and he’s had some injuries but none of them are injuries that

The Truth About Commonwealth Charters Students, parents, and taxpayers deserve schools that work for all… 1. True public schools educate all types of students. Commonwealth Charter schools do not.
BOSTON TEACHERS UNION
3. Though set up as laboratories of innovation, to date charter schools have offered few innovations. 4. The ratio of children who have special needs and who are English Language learners at Commonwealth Charter schools is far less than that in the BPS. 5. True public schools do not push out or counsel out students just prior to MCAS season. Nor do they evict students just prior to graduation. 6. Commonwealth Charter schools drain limited resources that could be better spent on our entire school population, not just a select few. The students who are most disadvantaged and most costly to educate remain in urban districts while scarce resources are being drained from their budgets. All children deserve equity and access to a quality education.
Our state aid is down more than $60 million over 12 years... 1. In FY 15, Chapter 70 will account for 11% of the district’s funding, down from 31% fifteen years ago. Although Commonwealth Charter schools serve only 13% of the Boston student population, they get over 50% of the Chapter 70 state aid. Keep the city’s resources in public schools that educate and welcome all students. 2. Our schools require more resources to maintain and to provide adequate services to all children. BPS parents shouldn’t have to resort to bake sales to keep their art teacher or their physical education teacher.

(*BPS students, too, have more severe special needs on average than those students in Commonwealth Charter schools.)
