Feds: Accused bomber’s pal hid evidence to protect him In court. Azamat Tazhayakov is the first of three friends to face trial for allegedly impeding the Boston bombing investigation. “Don’t go thinking it’s me, you cooked bastard,” is what the accused Boston bomber texted to his college friend Azamat Tazhayakov an hour and a half after two bombs tore through the Boylston Street finish line on April 15, 2013. Prosecutors made that

claim Monday during opening arguments for the trial of 20-year-old Tazhayakov, who is accused along with his roommate Dias Kadyrbayev of removing a backpack, fireworks, a laptop and other evidence from Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s UMass Dartmouth dorm room three days after the attack. “When they removed all these things, the defendant thought that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was one of the Boston Marathon bombers,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie Siegmann. Tazhayakov has pleaded not guilty to charges of ob-

he knew how to build a bomb using gunpowder and praised martyrdom because martyrs “die with a smile on [their] face and go straight to heaven.” Defense attorney Nicholas Wooldridge urged the jury not to be swayed by the sensationalism surrounding Tsarnaev’s terror case. “What is this case about? Well I’ll tell you what it’s not about: the bombing,” Wooldridge told the jury. “Don’t get shocked and awed. Stay clear and stay focused. … I hope you give this kid a shot.” UMass Dartmouth senior Tiffany Evora was one of four witnesses to be called

to the stand on Monday. Evora said she befriended both Tazhayakov and Tsarnaev in the autumn of 2012, and regularly smoked marijuana, played video games and drank with the pair. Evora said she occasionally exchanged text messages with Tsarnaev, who she claimed sold marijuana on campus. Tazhayakov had a softer reputation, according to Evora, who said friends referred to him by two nicknames: “The Good Kid” and “Mama’s Boy.” MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

One person died and nearly a dozen others were taken to a hospital after a hazardous materials incident at a Plymouth school. Local authorities responded to the Manomet Elementary School on Monday morning and called in the Hazardous Materials Response Team from the state fire marshal’s office. A school custodian working in the building died, according to the state fire marshal’s office. It is not clear if the death is connected to work being done on the building. Officials said chemical readings in the building were very low. Eleven other people, including 10 public safety personnel and another school employee, were taken to a local hospital

Women’s rights groups to rally outside City Hall SCOTUS. Local organizations plan to speak out against two recent Supreme Court rulings. Groups opposed to two recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions plan to hold a “Supreme Rally for Women’s Equality” this afternoon on Boston’s City Hall Plaza. The rally, which will include pro-choice groups as well as the ACLU of Massachusetts and the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center, will

focus on the court’s decision to strike down the state’s 35-foot “buffer zone” around the entrances to reproductive health clinics. Protesters will also voice outrage over a separate ruling that found some companies with religious objections, such as craft specialty chain Hobby Lobby, can avoid Obamacare’s contraceptives requirement. The groups contend that the rulings put women at risk and make it more difficult for them to access reproductive health services and contraceptives. The rally is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. today.

Taking action State lawmakers are drafting new protections for people entering abortion clinics. •

The bill will update the state’s dispersal law, making it easier for police to disperse a crowd of protesters at women’s health clinics.

It may also adopt on a state level some existing federal protections around clinics.

A veteran Boston firefighter who earlier this year served as the incident commander during the fatal Back Bay blaze was announced on Monday as the agency’s new commissioner. Deputy Chief Joseph Finn will serve as the commissioner of the Boston Fire Department, Mayor Marty Walsh announced. Finn has been a member of the department since 1984 and has risen through the ranks during his three-decade career as a firefighter. In 2001, he was promoted to deputy chief of personnel. sponsibilities including administrative functions, fire ground operations, hazardous materials and technical rescues. “Chief Finn’s experience and leadership style, along with his commitment to diversity and fairness, will help move our fire department into an even more successful era of service to the people of Boston,” Walsh said in a statement.

A Marine who earned his bachelor’s degree from Northeastern University in 2008, Finn was one of the finalists identified by a consulting firm hired by Walsh in March to conduct a nationwide search to find the next commissioner. MICHAEL NAUGHTON @MetroBosMike

Having three decades of experience and increasing responsibility within the Boston Fire Department has earned Finn the reputation of being a “true leader” with a “no nonsense” attitude. “He knows what this job needs, he knows what it’s about and he knows where we need to do some fixing,” said Rich Paris, president of Local 718, the Boston firefighter’s union. “He’s been through a lot,” said Paris, referring to March’s fire in the Back Bay, in which two firefighters died. “He did a great job that day. He’s a great incident commander and he’s going to be a great commissioner.”

Ways to work and travel I love travelling and have now been to more than 90 countries even as I’ve been working nearly every day, raking in six or seven figures a year for the past 15 years. I spend a good amount of money on travel, but always make sure to save a good portion of my earnings for retirement and to spend on the next trip! How do I balance my work and travel? Here are three tips:

Use technology to free yourself

For exclusive commentary, visit Metro.us/blogs.

{{SUBSECTION}} PERSONAL FINANCE

WordPress, Skype, WhatsApp and GoToWebinar are just a few of the new technologies I use to manage my business while I travel abroad. You can call me a travel addict because I recognize that you don’t have to work from your home office, cubicle or office in just one city or town.No matter what your profession, use Google to see what kinds of tools are out there to help you do your job and you, too, can earn a steady income from anywhere in the world where there’s an Internet connection.

Plan ahead

↑ ↓ Up: The U.S. stock market is at all-time highs and there doesn’t seem to be anything on the horizon to stop the bullish rally.

Down: Facebook acquired LiveRail, so now we’ll start seeing annoying video ads auto-playing all the time. Boooooo!

If you’re going to work and make money from locations where 99.9 percent of people there are on a vacation where work is the last thing on their minds, you need to be meticulous or else risk becoming a vacationer too. I always do thorough research

ahead of time to make sure my hotel and itinerary allow for plenty of work time on the highest speed Internet possible in every travel destination. I love beaches and tropical locations, but the Internet can be very slow in places like Turks & Caicos, Bora Bora and the Maldives, so be sure to research hotels and cafes that have the best Internet possible. TripAdvisor has a nice way to search reviews from business travelers.

Invest in proper equipment Working from crowded cafes or business centers is sometimes unavoidable, so invest in a premium headset with a microphone so you can use Skype to handle calls or play music and not be disturbed by those around you. Other people will inevitably look at you like you’re crazy and encourage you to stop working, but don’t let them distract you from your goals. You can always take a dip after you’ve made enough money to pay for some — or all — of the vacation.

Guilty pleasure. The popular Tumblr gets fictionalized. Love ’em or hate ’em, you know who they are: Rich Kids of Instagram is a Tumblr that popped up two years ago filled with photos of teens unapologetically flaunting their extreme

wealth. Photos of $40,000 shopping sprees, out-of-control yacht parties and champagne bubble baths are just a sampling of what you’ll find. Now, in the first Instagram-to-book deal, a novel based on those photos comes out today. The anonymous creator of the Tumblr enlisted writer Maya Sloan — who ghostwrote Kendall and Kylie Jenner’s new YA novel — to write the book,

which centers on a Danish royal and his five friends. “The 10 most frequent contributors of the site served as a basic resource of information in the beginning, Sloan says. “The book is completely fiction, but I researched who these teens were, who was hanging out with who and what they were into. Sloan’s challenge was to humanize the teens so they would be more than just a clique that

people laugh at. “As I got to know people with extreme wealth, I did start to feel for them, she says. “There’s a classic money-can’tbuy-love thing going on. A lot of these kids are really lonely, feel unloved and are looking for a way to feel validated. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

While sources say Simpson revealed his sexuality to his ex-wife and children before filing for divorce in 2012, he’s denied any gay rumors as “ridiculous” and “untrue” — despite another alleged lover, Joey Anderson, dishing all to the tabloids. Hey, gay or straight, it’s not cool to bring a new significant other to your kid’s wedding — especially when your paramour is 12 years younger than the bride. That’s just tacky, Joe.

Remembering Roger Bombshell

Interview. Chaz Ebert reflects on “Life Itself,” the doc about her late husband. For years, Chaz Ebert stayed away from the spotlight while her husband, film critic Roger Ebert, was beamed onto the nation’s TV screens. It wasn’t until his illness robbed him of his speaking voice that she made herself more known. Since his death last spring, she has been instrumental in keeping his legacy alive, from maintaining his website to participating in “Life Itself,” Steve James’ documentary about him. There are so many stories about Roger writing back to his fans. My question is: How many Rogers were there? He wrote more reviews than anyone, he wrote all these books, he was teaching at the University of Chicago for 30 years. He was

married and he had grandchildren. How many Rogers were there and how did he write back to all those readers? I don’t know, and I lived with him for 24 years. Writing about movies does mean writing about just about every topic. He wrote about everything, especially once he started blogging. When he talked about movies being machines that generate empathy, he meant it. He was

so curious. He loved learning about different cultures. We used to travel a lot. ... He spoke about spending two hours of your life in someone else’s shoes — what it feels like to be a person of a different gender, a different age, a different race, a different sexual orientation, a different political belief. He embraced that. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

matt.prigge@metro.us

I lived in Chicago, so I’m sure I must have read his reviews and watched his television show. Before we started dating, I didn’t know his show was national. I also didn’t know he had written “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.” I was in college during the Russ Meyer years, and college students loved Russ Meyer movies. I just had to go back and make sure it was good. I’m also — I’m reluctant to say this, but I have to tell the truth: Gene Siskel was my favorite at one time. Once I got to know them both personally, Roger was head and shoulders above Gene. And I loved Gene Siskel.

Interview. Actress Tilda Swinton based her ‘Snowpiercer’ baddie in part on an old enemy For “Snowpiercer, actress Tilda Swinton disappears behind massive false teeth and garish glasses to play Mason, an embodiment of bureaucratic evil tasked with keeping the lower classes in line as what’s left of humanity waits out a second ice age on a perpetually moving train.

Where did you draw on for the physical appearance? It’s actually a private joke — which is now no longer private at all — for my brothers. ... We knew somebody who spoke exactly like that when we were little. The first year I was able to vote, Margaret Thatcher came into power, and my

[Director Bong Joon-ho is] such a sophisticated filmmaker and such a unique voice, but he’s so educated and he’s so cine-literate. He is, I would suggest, the most consciously constructive formalist filmmaker, in a way, since someone like Hitchcock or Kubrick. NED EHRBAR

Keep kids reading this summer Tips. The vice president of eScholastic, Parents & Kids Channels gives her tips on how to keep your kid’s nose in a book when school’s out.

PLUS Set a goal

Aim for 11 books Setting a reading goal with your child this summer gives them something to work toward. Your son or daughter can create his or her own reading chart, and they can put a sticker next to each completed book title. Plan to do something fun together when the goal is met, like seeing a movie based on the book.

With these tips, your child won’t want to stop reading.

It’s officially summer — and if your kids are like most, they’re excited to put their books away and focus more on running around outside, watching TV and playing with your iPhone. Reading probably isn’t on their mind, so we asked Maggie McGuire, vice president of eScholastic, Parents & Kids Channels for fun, interactive ways to keep kids reading all summer long. McGuire is also one of the creative minds behind the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. She shares these tips with parents.

Let kids choose their own books Your son or daughter will be more likely to pick up a book to read if it’s something he or she picked out and not something you gave them and

Field Trip

Be a reading role model If your kids see you reading, they are more likely to read themselves. “Take your child to a book signing for an author you like or go to the library together, where you can read side-by-side, McGuire says.

READING TOGETHER INSPIRES HEALTHY HABITS. / COLOURBOX

assigned. McGuire suggests taking a trip to a local community bookstore together where you can not only browse different books, but also check out kids only readings.

Read outside Especially if it’s a book about nature, it’s fun for kids to be in an atmosphere mirroring what they’re reading about,

McGuire says.

Go beyond the cover Make reading interactive by doing things that are set in the books your kids are reading. After your daughter reads “Eloise, have tea together. “Or you can go to a museum and relive ‘The Fixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler,’ recommends McGuire.

Learn about it later “Pick some nonfiction books. After visiting the zoo, have kids learn more about animals with the Discover More series. Or check out a science museum and search for STEMrelated titles in the gift shop to keep their curiosity going, says McGuire. Reading doesn’t have to just be a sit-still-and-be-quiet activity. By making it interactive, your kids are more likely to want to keep reading, even when school isn’t in session. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

Read under the stars

OPEN HOUSE!!

Go stargazing One way to get your kids to read more nonfiction is to take them to a planetarium or stargazing spot in your city. In Boston, the Charles Hayden Planetarium is a favorite of kids. Check it out together, then give your son or daughter a book related to astronomy to read at home.

World Cup preview: Brazil World Cup. A match between two soccer powers, Tuesday’s semifinal will be missing some serious star power. It’s the penultimate round in the biggest sporting event in the world, and the final four are slated to battle Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Two soccer powers will duel in the first match at 4 p.m. Tuesday on ESPN, with host country Brazil facing Germany. It seems that everything has fallen into place for the Germans to prevail, with suspensions and injuries creating an even playing field. Many members of each squad are teammates, or rivals, during the regular season in Europe, so there is no lack of familiarity between these two squads. Germany has added a little

For full World Cup F coverage, visit Metro.us/world-cup. Me trash talk in the past couple days, with coach Joachim Low saying: “There’s little left of that traditional Brazilian style of football.” Historically, Brazil owns a 12-4-5 advantage over Germany in 21 bouts between the two. The only other time they played in the World Cup was the 2002 final, a 2-0 victory for the South Americans. If these two were slated to play when the World Cup began in the group stage, it would be a clear Brazil advantage. But Neymar, who suffered a fractured vertebra in Brazil’s 2-1 victory over Colombia, is out at least three weeks. “There are two games left, and I am sure that my teammates will do everything possible so that my dream, which is to be a champion, comes

Cup. Germans put vs. Germany World successful passing to test true, Neymar told Team Brazil’s website. And their captain, Thiago Silva, was given a yellow card for the second time in the tournament in the game as well, costing him his opportunity to participate in the semifinals on a careless challenge. Yellow cards are not expunged until the seminfinal round. Neymar’s absence creates an offensive void, one that Nate Silver and FiveThirtyEight.com handicapped at 0.4 goals per game. But more than missing the 22-year-old phenom, the Brazilians will miss the leadership and emotional spark that is Silva. The 29-year-old is crucial to the team’s backline, though he also had the opening goal in the team’s quarterfinal win over Colombia. Germany couldn’t have written a better script. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

evan.macy@metro.us

By the numbers

2002 Brazil last won a World Cup in 2002, when it defeated Tuesday’s opponent Germany, 2-0, in Japan.

1990 Germany last won the World Cup in 1990 when they were still oďŹƒcially West Germany. U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann was a forward on the team. They defeated Argentina, 1-0, in Italy.

It’s a tale of two different approaches in Tuesday night’s World Cup semifinal between Brazil and Germany. The Germans move the ball extremely well. In fact, the team has played 500 more successful passes than anyone else in the competition and over 1,000 more than Brazil. The two styles of play couldn’t be more different. Germany plays fundamental, ball-control soccer, while Brazil tries to win at all costs (as can be demonstrated by Thiago Silva and company

against Colombia). It isn’t your parent’s Brazilian squad, known more for it’s free-flowing offensive style. It is a totally different team, characterized by 10 yellow cards this tournament. “I am all for hard, clean challenges, but there were one or two tackles which were over the limit, German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger told the media Sunday after watching Brazil’s win. “The Brazilians aren’t the magicians here of old, the team has changed and so has their playing style. EVAN MACY

Schweinsteiger, the Bayern Munich star, was critical of Brazil.

The Celtics remain $15 million under the salary cap, and they don’t appear to be content to play with only young talent. ESPN reported Monday the Celtics are one of a handful of teams interested in signing free agent shooting guard Lance Stephenson. But it will take a good chunk of change to do it. The Pacers oered Stephenson a ďŹ ve-year, $44 million deal last week, but he was looking for more money. The Mavericks and Lakers have also expressed interest in the swingman from Brooklyn. Stephenson generated plenty of negative attention during the NBA playos for his antics guarding LeBron James, including blowing in his ear. He was also ďŹ ned twice during the postseason for ops. But the versatile guard

posted 13.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game in 2013-14. He generated similar numbers in the playos and is still just 23 years old. The Celtics are also continuing to pursue a trade for Kevin Love, which would change their salary cap situation. METRO
