Recent drownings spark swimming safety push Safety. Five people have drowned in in the last three weeks in NYC. Saturday’s drowning death of a toddler in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park has sparked an effort to improve water safety in the city. Family members of 2-year-old Ruhshona Kurbonova stood by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams at Grand Army Plaza on Monday, not far from where the girl’s body was found after she wandered away from her relatives. Dilshod Isakov, Ruhshona’s father, spoke through a translator to thank officials for spreading the message of water safety on behalf of his family, saying: “They’re very sad and don’t want it to happen again.” Part of driving down water-related deaths, Adams said, is education. In Brooklyn, leaders will visit

He pointed to four other recent drownings as evidence of the need: On June 26, a 21-year-old Williamsburg resident dove in to the East River and was swept away; two Bronx teens died after diving into the Bronx River on June 20; and one day earlier, a man, 29, died after jumping off a Coney Island pier.

“When you look at the number of people who are losing their lives,” he said, “the five people who lost their lives in the last three weeks — all of them were under the age of 30.” Eric Adams City officials highlighted the importance of swimming classes. The Parks Department offers “Learn to Swim” classes free for all ages at pools in the city “The frustrating thing about all of is this that 98 percent of all drowning deaths are not necessary,” said Shawn Slevin, founder of the Swim Strong Foundation, a nonprofit that

Slevin said he hopes to work with the Department of Education to put water safety into its outreach. “No family should have to go through what you did,” Slevin said to Isakov. Cops take aim at summer violence The NYPD is going “all out” to combat summer violence. As part of the Summer All Out program, about 313 police were temporarily placed on patrol this month and sent to 15 precincts and housing police service areas with the highest volume of shootings, officials said Monday. another 25 to 30 impact officers deployed citywide every day this summer, Chief of Department Philip Banks said.

There have been 562 shootins so far this year as of Sunday, a 9 percent increase from 2013.

“The result is to have an impact on street conditions, specifically shootings,” Banks said. Shooting incidents are

up about 9 percent since 2013, from 514 to 562 year to date through Sunday. Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said shootings may inch up some years, but that the city is experiencing a decrease in crime. “We’ve had years where homicides went up, years past where shootings went up,” Bratton said, “We addressed it, the next year it went down.”

The new officers will temporarily leave desk jobs and special assignments, officials said. Instead of reassigning officers, City Council members had supported adding 1,000 cops to the force. The bid failed. “I could always use more cops, but if the budget doesn’t support it, the budget doesn’t support it,” Bratton said. ANNA SANDERS

Transportation. Uber lowers prices in NYC Uber, the car-sharing service that lets people order transportation via a smartphone, is temporarily cutting fares on its taxi-like option to step up competition with New York City cab services. The startup reduced fares by 20 percent in New York for its UberX service, making it cheaper than a city taxi, the company said Monday. An UberX ride from New York’s Grand Central to the Financial District would cost $22 under the new fares, compared with $24 for a city taxi, Uber said. The lower prices will be in place for a limited time. “New York is Uber’s biggest market, and we’re growing fast, but we always hear, ‘I like Uber, it’s convenient, but a taxi is still the best deal,’” said Josh Mohrer, Uber’s general manager for New York. “It’s always been a goal of ours to be cheaper than taxis.” BLOOMBERG

Traditional cab drivers worldwide say they are bound by rules that don’t apply to Uber, putting them at a disadvantage.

Investigators said the unidentified suspect approached a brownstone on MacDonough Street at 1 a.m. when his 25-year-old victim was sitting on the building’s steps. Dutch student Job Jansweijer wants to give sick children a chance to just be kids. That’s why he created KonneKt, a toy that transforms the glass panel used to isolate sick children into a place for playful multi-colored objects, attached by magnets and suction cups that can be used to create games to be played with their peers. “Children, parents, childcare workers and doctors were very positive about it. And many hospitals in different countries have already indicated they would like to have it too,” Jansweijer tells Metro. What inspired you to create KonneKt? For my graduation project, I interviewed child cancer patients. ... I learned that I had been prejudiced about them. ... Instead of focusing on them having cancer, I should focus on them being children. They still want to play and explore.

What kind of games they can play? The kids can play together on opposite sides of the window. They can attach shapes to a window using suction cups and magnets, and by combining these shapes in different ways, the children can build a maze or a jungle, castles and dragons or tropical birds, play existing games such

What are the plans to make the toy available? [It’s expensive.] That’s why I will launch a crowdfunding campaign in September. Real estate. Hidden costs renters should know before signing If you’re one of the many people hunting for a new apartment right now, there’s a lot to consider. Several factors will have you paying more that you might not know about. We got XL Real Property Management CEO Dylan Pichulik to expose these real estate secrets. Higher ceilings. Many apartment hunters covet big windows and high ceilings, but Pichulik says they can be a big money suck. “Apartments with high ceilings require more energy to keep cool in the summer or heat in the winter,” he says. People often focus on the monthly rental cost and neglect the potential costs of their utilities bill. Unexpected tipping. “I don’t think a lot of people understand the extent of the costs of tipping doormen, supers and other staff,” Pichulik says. The small costs of tipping

when someone helps get you a taxi or fixes something for you can add up. Amenities. Complexes boasting gyms, game rooms and other amenities are popping up all over the city, but according to Pichulik, it’s not often listed in the rental ad how much these amenities cost to use. “Ask about additional costs when you are first looking at the apartment, not when you’re about to sign the lease,” he says. EMILY LAURENCE

One more tip

Neighborhood costs Don’t just consider the rental cost; know what’s in the area, Pichulik recommends. Is the only grocery store a Citarella? Will you be paying more for beer than in your old hood? Consider all the potential costs before making a decision on where to live.

Talking points

Colfer back for more ‘Glee’ “Gleeâ€? fans got a shock last week when star Chris Colfer tweeted that he’d been let go from the show ahead of its ďŹ nal season, but it turns out it was all the work of a hacker. “We’ve been alerted that Chris Colfer’s Twitter account has been hacked. Rumors of his dismissal from ‘Glee’ could not be further from the truth,â€? a rep for 20th Century Fox TV says in a statement. Colfer wasn’t the only cast member to have an account hacked. Lea Michele was surprised when her Twitter account suddenly read, “Before this gets out to the media, I would like to announce to my fans that I am pregnant.â€? Maybe the rest of the cast members should change their passwords.

Simpson’s dad brings a ‘client’ to wedding

While sources say Simpson revealed his sexuality to his ex-wife and children before ďŹ ling for divorce in 2012, he’s denied any gay rumors as “ridiculous.â€? Hey, gay or straight, it’s not cool to bring a “dateâ€? to your kid’s wedding — especially when your paramour is 12 years younger than the bride.

The Rijksmuseum Museumstraat 1, 1071 XX Amsterdam www.rijksmuseum.nl One of the more than 50 museums and galleries located throughout Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum reopened in 2012 after an 18-year restoration eort. The Dutch national museum houses more than 1 million objects in its collection, including the Netherlands’ national painting, Rembrandt’s “The Night Watch.â€? Not to be missed by bikers: the museum’s famous underpass, which takes cyclists directly through the museum under ornate vaulting and large windows.

Where to stay

THE DYLAN AMSTERDAM

Get on your bike and ride. The easiest way to experience Amsterdam is in the saddle. Amsterdam is arguably best known for its red light district and cannabis coffee shops, but the city on the banks of the Amstel River is also home to a lot of bike enthusiasts. The Dutch as a nation love to bike. Amsterdam has a population of about 750,00 people and an estimated 600,000 bicycles within its city limits. The 250 miles of dedicated bike paths and relatively flat terrain make it ideal for biking. The city’s many narrow, one-way streets add to its biking appeal. Amsterdam’s cyclists have a reputation for ignoring traffic rules and riding with little regard for life or limb. Travelers would be wise not to apply “when in Rome logic here, because cyclists don’t have the right of way in traffic. Unless otherwise indicated by traffic signs, the right-beforeleft rule applies. Word of warning: Amsterdam has a high rate of bicycle thefts, so it’s

Tips. How to keep your kid’s nose in a book this summer It’s officially summer — and if your kids are like most, they’re excited to put their books away and focus more on running around outside, watching TV and playing with your iPhone. Reading probably isn’t on their mind, so we asked Maggie McGuire, vice president of eScholastic, Parents & Kids Channels for fun, interactive ways to keep kids reading all summer long. McGuire is also one of the creative minds behind the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. She shares these tips with parents.

“Swing by Governor’s Island new Hammock Grove, Riis Beach in Far Rockaway or the new Brooklyn Bridge Park for an outdoor read-aloud, McGuire says. Especially if it’s a book about nature,

it’s fun for kids to be in an outdoor setting.

Go beyond the cover Many famous kids books are set in places that we walk by every day. After your daughter reads “Eloise, have tea at the Plaza together. “Or you can go to a museum like the Museum of Modern Art and relive ‘The Fixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler,’ recommends McGuire.

PARENTING

Don’t assign books

Let them choose their own books Your son or daughter will be more likely to pick up a book to read if it’s something he or she picked out and not something you gave them and assigned. McGuire suggests taking a trip to a local community bookstore together where you can not only browse dierent books, but also check out kids only readings. With these tips, your child won’t want to stop reading.

Field Trip

Learn about it later

Be a reading role model

“After visiting the zoo, have kids learn more about animals with the Discover More series. Or check out a science museum and search for STEM-related titles in the gift shop to keep their curiosity going, says McGuire. EMILY LAURENCE

If your kids see you reading, they are more likely to read themselves. “Take your child to a book signing for an author you

like or go to the library together, where you can read side-by-side, McGuire says.

How to play Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1-9. There is no math involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

Can’t force people to conform to your values Re: ‘Constitution doesn’t protect pursuit of pleasure,’ (Metro, July 3-6) To letter writer Justin Dobbs I would reply: History shows that every state which attempts to upgrade the “morality” of its citizens from ordinary human nature to some religious or otherwise unnatural ideal ultimately resorts to using totalitarian means to accomplish this impossible goal. People aren’t going to make love the way that you imagine is right for them because birth control is harder — or easier — to obtain!

Method to his madness Re: ‘Calling Kanye West gets expected results’ (Metro, July 7) In response to Kanye West’s quote during the concert replacing Drake: The obscure mask was to distract you from whose creativity it was coming from. Louie Vuitton is the representation of the ultimate goal of status for the black rapper. Kanye’s point was that society will discriminate against the black American before any and all other races. In essence, for this, Kanye is saying “I don’t give a damn.” SCOTT CARSON, VIA EMAIL

Hollins: Nets going to work hard, win NBA. The Nets introduced their replacement for Jason Kidd Monday.

This summer for the Nets was supposed to be about getting Brook Lopez and Deron Williams back to full health, re-signing Paul Pierce, seeing if Kevin Garnett wants to return and tweaking a 44-win roster. But on Monday it was instead about introducing Lionel Hollins as the Nets’ new head coach and the franchise’s fourth since moving from New Jersey following the 2011-2012 season. Having a press conference to introduce a new head coach was not expected — at least not two weeks ago. Then Jason Kidd tried to grab more power, ownership denied him and allowed him to leave for Milwaukee. That was followed by stories of rampant dysfunction that described Kidd trying to undermine King, who reportedly wanted to make a coaching change when the team was 10-21 early last

It’s the penultimate round in the biggest sporting event in the world, and the final four are slated to battle Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Two soccer powers will duel in the first match at 4 p.m. Tuesday on ESPN, with host country Brazil facing Germany. It seems that everything has fallen into place for the Germans to prevail, with suspensions and injuries creating an even playing field. Many members of each squad are teammates, or rivals during the regular season in Europe, so there is no lack of familiarity between these two squads. Historically, Brazil owns a 12-4-5 advantage over

Germany in 21 games. The only other time they played in the World Cup was the 2002 final, a 2-0 victory for the South Americans. If these two were slated to play when the World Cup began in the group stage, it would be a clear Brazil advantage. But Neymar, who suffered a fractured vertebra in Brazil’s 2-1 victory over Colombia, is out at least three weeks. “There are two games left and I am sure that my teammates will do everything possible so that my dream, which is to be a champion, comes true, Neymar told Brazil’s website. Also their captain, Thiago Silva, was given a second yellow card against Colombia, meaning he won’t be able to play Tuesday. Germany couldn’t have written a better script.

Dierent styles

Germans put successful passes to test It’s a tale of two dierent approaches in Tuesday’s World Cup semiďŹ nal between Brazil and Germany. The Germans move the ball extremely well. The team has played 500 more successful passes than anyone else in the

Marcelo and Brazil’s defense will have their hands full.

competition. The two styles of play couldn’t be more dierent. Germany plays fundamental, ball-control soccer, while Brazil tries to win at all costs. “I am all for hard, clean challenges, but there were one or two tackles which were over the limit,â€? Germany’s Bastian Schweinsteiger told the media Sunday. EVAN MACY
