App aims to fix Hub’s problematic parking Chilly reception. The Mayor’s office is not too fond of Haystack, which allows motorists to sell their public parking spaces. On any given day, in any part of the city, it’s a safe bet that there are more than a few frustrated drivers cursing as they take on the task of parking in Boston. But after this week, there may be new hope for motorists looking to park their cars on city streets. Haystack, a mobile app that launched last month in Baltimore, lets Apple iOS and Android users buy and sell street parking spots in real time. Users are able to connect with others in their neighborhood who are either searching for a parking spot or leaving one. Space buyers are charged $3, with $2.25 going to the space sellers and 75 cents going to Haystack. Haystack Founder Eric Meyer describes the technology as “Uber meets Tinder” and said he believes the app will reduce emissions and traffic congestion, as users will spend less time searching for those coveted spaces. “We had several Haystack members here in Baltimore who said, ‘Oh my God, if there is one city that needs this more than any other city in the country, it’s Boston,’” said Meyer, 24. “We had been looking at couple different cities, but Boston is similar to Baltimore in many respects. This is a solution that is going to help neighbors help their neigh-

Man charged after swimming in shark tank Gone fishin’. No animals were harmed after a man took a dip at the aquarium.

The tank at the Aquarium is open at the top. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO

A Quincy man is in hot water after he allegedly jumped into the New England Aquarium’s centerpiece, a 200,000 gallon

tank that is home to hundreds of Caribbean fish, as well as coral, sea turtles, stingrays and sharks. Stephen Pellegrine, 51, was arrested Thursday evening after staff members say he snuck into the aquarium without paying and jumped into the four-story salt water basin. Aquarium staff demanded that he get out of the water, but

he allegedly swam around for “several minutes” before complying. Staff members told Fox 25 that Pellegrine appeared intoxicated. “Fortunately, the sharks had already been fed,” Suffolk District Attorney Spokesman Jake Wark said in an email on Sunday. Pellegrine had a not-guilty plea entered on his behalf Fri-

day in Boston Municipal Court to charges of trespassing and disorderly conduct. He was held on $1,500 cash bail and ordered to undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation — and to stay away from the aquarium. He is due back in court on July 23. MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

I was looking for a spa to visit with my mom and found one with great reviews on Yelp claiming that they had the lowest prices. Unfortunately, the service was terrible and the prices were way more expensive in person. Did Yelp lie to us? One of the risks of using a website like Yelp to check on the quality of a business is that anyone can write reviews — including the business owners themselves or someone that the business has paid to write reviews. You might find reviews written with such extreme language that they couldn’t possibly have been written by a consumer. Keep an eye out for strange or incorrect spelling and grammar. That is usually a sign that the review is fraudulent. A good way to check if a review is legitimate is to click through to the reviewer’s account history; there you can see if they have left other reviews or are only singing the praises of this business. It is always a good idea to check on the legitimacy of a business. Call the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation at 617-973-8787 to find out if a business has received many complaints. Is there anything I can do to get my money back or get a new microwave? Six months is a very short life for a microwave or any appliance; it may have been defective from the start. The Massachusetts implied warranty law says that every purchase made comes with the protection that it will work, as intended, for a reasonable amount of time. I suggest finding the receipt and calling the store to see if they will let you return it. If they give you a hard time, write a 30-day demand letter to the retailer. This letter is your opportunity to take action against sellers who make false claims about their products. Take a look at the Implied Warranty section in my office’s Consumer University booklet at www.mass.gov/ocabr/ consumer-rights-and-resources/ consumer-protection/shopping/ shopping-rights/shoppingrights.html.

The man without a face Interview. You know “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes star Andy Serkis. You just may not know it.

Andy Serkis returns to the “Ape series as its mammal protagonist. The finished product: Serkis becomes chimp leader Caesar (inset). SERKIS: GETTY IMAGES, CAESAR: WETA

He’s the biggest movie star you don’t know by face (and maybe name): British actor Andy Serkis is the performer who was motion-captured to portray Gollum in the “Lord of the Rings and “Hobbit films, the titular supergorilla in Peter Jackson’s “King Kong and, these days, Caesar

in the current “Planet of the Apesâ€? reboot series. “Dawn,â€? the franchise’s latest, finds mocap technology at its best-so-far — which is good, as Serkis will be using it extensively for his directorial debut, “The Jungle Book.â€? Like the Tolkien ďŹ lms, the eects are done by the New Zealand company WETA. Do you work closely with them in post-production to get those subtleties of movement and facial expressions? No. That used to be the case. For Gollum, that was the case, because when we did Gollum it was a slightly different system. My performance was filmed, as it is now, but then the animators basically copied all facial

expressions afterward. So the animators’ job was to literally match every nuance of my facial expressions. In the “Lord of the Ringsâ€? days, I used to talk to the animators afterward and re-enact bits for them. But today, 14 years later, the advancement of technology being what it is, the actors drive the facial capture. With the number of reference cameras on our faces, a lot of the work is done for them. Besides, our relationship spans 14 years. They’ve seen every single facial muscle of mine move in every single direction, and they’ve had to read every single underlying emotion in my face. Do you ďŹ nd your acting approach changes doing live-action or mo-cap? The acting process is no different whatsoever. If I was to play Gollum in a 21st-century setting, and he was on the street, I wouldn’t play him any differently than if I was playing him in Middle Earth. But in terms of the backstory, the emotional content of the character, the approach is the same. So for a primal ape, you have to learn physical ape behavior and movements. What this all adds up to is acting, really, and it doesn’t matter whether you’re wearing a costume or makeup, or if you’re putting on a unitard and a head-mounted camera.

Tip

Ask yourself what impression you are making online “Google yourself, suggests Post. It’s good to see what others see when they search for you. Are there public posts of you drinking or partying? Post says you may want to erase those, but it’s ultimately up to you to decide what’s important to you. “Are you going to let your career dictate your online persona, or are you the type of person that is going to say, ‘No, this is who I am and I am going to find a position where this isn’t going to matter? Post asks.

JOBS & EDUCATION

Digital etiquette for the smartphone generation Emily Post made a name for herself in the early 1900s as a world-renowned expert on etiquette and manners, advising readers on everything from making polite conversation to the right way to host an afternoon tea. Several generations later, her descendants are continuing her legacy with a 21st-century twist — by advising people on life in the digital age. “It’s kind of unbelievable the leaps and bounds we have made in just the last few years and how much digital usage has increased, says Lizzie Post, Emily’s great-greatgranddaughter. and one of the authors of the latest edition of “Emily Post’s The Etiquette Advantage in Business. We asked Post for her take on modern social media dilemmas many of us face in the workplace.

Should you accept that LinkedIn request? With the popularity of LinkedIn, it’s common to get all sorts of connection requests from everyone from elementary school friends to your neighbors. “I don’t respond to people on LinkedIn that I don’t

know well or that I haven’t worked with closely, says Post of her own personal policy. “For people like high school friends, unless I know your work, I decline the request.

What if you don’t want to write that recommendation? “I don’t recommend friends, says Post. “It’s one thing to be friends with you, but that doesn’t mean that I know how you work. With endorsements, it’s a little bit different. If I have seen your blog and have read your book, then I feel like I can do it. Saying no is always an option, she says.

Think hard about whether you want to add your co-workers on Facebook. “While typically most of us have always bonded with our co-workers, it’s really dierent today,â€? Lizzie Post points out. “Previously, it was very controlled in what you allowed your co-workers to see [about your life outside of work],â€? she says. “You have to decide what works for you. You can always tell a co-worker, ‘I had to make a decision and I decided not to mix my work and personal lives.’â€?

What should you say to your friend who constantly complains on Facebook? Many of us have a close friend who constantly complains about their jobs online. “It puts something negative out there, and it’s most likely something like ‘My boss sucks,’ says Post. Many people don’t realize the impression they are making. “The best way to handle it is to say, ‘I’m your friend and I’ve seen lately that you’ve been complaining a lot on Facebook,’ says Post. “Then just say ‘I know people who have been caught by that before and I don’t want that to happen to you.’

Germany earns Cup with extra-time goal World Cup. Mario Gotze scored the lone goal in the 113th minute to lift Germany to its fourth World Cup title all time. It felt like a scene we had seen before. A scoreless deadlock, extra time dwindling away and penalty kicks on the horizon. The World Cup was just under 10 minutes away from being decided by penalties — and then Mario Gotze bounced the ball off his chest in the 113th minute and fired a shot passed Argentina’s goalie Sergio Romero to give Germany a 1-0 advantage, one that would hold through the rest of extra time. Gotze was a substitute for veteran forward Miroslav Klose — who broke the record for most all-time goals in the World Cup in the semifinals — in the 88th minute. The Germans posted an impressive 18 goals in the World Cup and handed Argentina its third World Cup finals setback. The match was portrayed as Lionel Messi vs. the Machine, but Argentina’s threetime FIFA Ballon d’Or winner

Mario Gotze has already won three German league championships and the World Cup at just 22 years old. / GETTY IMAGES Handing out hardware Here’s another notable award that was handed out after Germany won the Cup. •

Germany’s Manuel Neuer beat out Tim Howard for the Golden Glove (best goalkeeper).

for Player of the Year was mostly quiet Sunday. Nonetheless, he was given the Golden Ball for the tournament’s best player despite having no goals and just one assist after group play. Argentina struggled to score after the opening round, netting just two goals in four games. It was no different on Sunday as they had just two

shots on goal compared to seven for the Germans. Messi had one last chance to play hero in the final seconds on a free kick off a penalty committed by Bastian Schweinsteiger, but he sailed the free kick from just outside the penalty box well over the frame. The Germans dealt with two surprise injuries — one immediately before the game and one during it. Starting midfielder Sami Khedira injured his calf in warmups just 15 minutes before the game and had to be replaced by Christoph Kramer. Then Kramer had to be substituted out of the match in the 31st minute with what appeared to be a head injury. He was replaced by Andre Schurrle. Germany won the title for the fourth time, but the first since 1990 when it was still West Germany. They had advanced to the semifinals in three straight World Cups prior to 2014 — once under current American head coach Jurgen Klinsmann — only to lose in the final in 2002 and take third place in both 2006 and 2010. They finally broke that curse in Brazil. EVAN MACY @evan_macy

Red Sox 11, Astros 0

Buchholz stars as Red Sox pound Astros to close out first half The Red Sox closed out an upand-down ďŹ rst half on a high note with a blowout victory over the Astros. Clay Buchholz threw his ďŹ rst complete game of the season, and ďŹ fth shutout in his eight-year career. He ďŹ nished with 12 strikeouts and just three hits allowed as he lowered his ERA to 5.42 in a disappointing season. The Sox scored early and often o the Astros. Houston manager Bo Porter yanked starter Brad Peacock after just ďŹ ve batters, one out and 27 pitches, despite trailing just

1-0 on a leado home run by Brock Holt. Anthony Bass didn’t do much better, though he lasted 3 1/3 innings and allowed three runs (two earned). Rookie catcher Christian Vazquez had two hits in his third game with the Red Sox since the team designated veteran A.J. Pierzynski for assignment on Thursday. Holt ended up with likely the best game of his young career, going 5-for-6 with the homer and two runs scored. He was 10-for-15 with four runs scored in the threegame set in Houston. He improved his batting average to .327 on the season with 25 extra-base hits in just 61 games. Boston improved to 43-52 on the season, winning four of ďŹ ve to close out the ďŹ rst half. But that came on the heels of losing seven of eight and putting themselves in a position where they might be a seller post All-Star break.
