With its plethora of residential homes and triple-deckers and its lively arts scene, Jamaica Plain seems like a natural fit for a “porchfest.” And that’s exactly what will take place this weekend when musicians take to the small, open-air stages and perform free for crowds and passersby. JP’s inaugural Porchfest kicks off at noon Saturday. “We want this to be a real JP event to really speak to what all of JP is in terms of the kinds of people who live here, and one
thing we believe very strongly is that music touches people in a very strong way,” said Mindy Fried, who along with Marie Ghitman, is organizing the neighborhood’s Porchfest. If the event sounds familiar, that’s because it probably is. Somerville, another community known for its abundance of triple-deckers and musicians, has held porchfest since 2011. Fried said the inspiration for the Jamaica Plain edition came in part from Somerville and the nearly two dozen other communities across the country that hold the event. They’re all different, Fried said, and the Jamaica Plain one will feature a diverse group of performers playing all across the neighborhood in an effort to get people out to places they don’t normally visit. As Fried and Ghitman started working on plans for

There are now 60 performers and bands scheduled to play on 35 porches throughout the neighborhood. One of the performers, Albino Mbie, will play Mozambican music with influences from jazz and R&B. “It’s going to be an amazing event in terms of culture, getting together and people will get to know what’s out there,” said Mbie. “Culturally and emotionally it’s going to be very uplifting for JP and in general for the people who will be there to visit.” MICHAEL NAUGHTON @MetroBosMike

Court. Testimony ends in Tsarnaev friend’s trial Following the testimony of an FBI agent, federal prosecutors and defense attorneys on Monday rested their cases in the obstruction trial of Azamat Tazhayakov, a friend of accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. The 20-year-old is the first of three men to face trial for allegedly interfering with the investigation by removing a laptop, a backpack containing empty fireworks, Vaseline and a hard drive from Tsarnaev’s dorm three days after the deadly attack. Tazhayakov is accused, along with his roommate Dias Kadyrbayev, of disposing of the backpack in a dumpster behind their New Bedford apartment. Tazhayakov’s attorneys have argued that their client never physically touched the bag. FBI special agent John Walker led a search of the apartment four days after the bombing. “In an effort to elicit truthful info on an immediate basis, I told him Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s life was effectively over, whether he was still living or going away, Walker testified. “I told the defendant that the defendant’s life did not need to be over. Tazhayakov agreed to go

Creativity. Kids make cute video to invite Obamas to school’s anniversary Students at Mather Elementary School, the nation’s first public elementary school, are hoping to get the attention of President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama. The students, with the help of school staff, have created a Vimeo video asking the Obamas to attend the Dorchester school’s 375th anniversary celebration next year. “Mr. President, it’s our big birthday; will you come visit?” asks one bright-eyed little girl, adding, “I’ll play hopscotch with Michelle Obama!” Another student praises the first lady, who “is known for her appearance on ‘Sesame Street,’ and it’s a pretty good season this year, I have to admit.” Mather Principal Emily Cox said staff and parents have been preparing for the momentous celebration for two years, and since the president receives so many letters and emails every day,

Hot stock sectors to watch now My top students and I have each accomplished the seemingly impossible: having turned a few thousand dollars in savings into several million dollars all within a few short years. Everyone wants to know how to achieve the same kind of success, and so I teach my strategy openly to all those who will listen. One of the most important rules to growing an account exponentially rather than just the typical 10-to-20 percent per year is to focus on the hottest stock market sectors, since to grow your account fast, you need fast-moving stocks! Here are three of the hottest sectors I’m watching:
Up: The U.S. stock market is at all-time highs, and there doesn’t seem to be anything on the horizon to stop the bullish rally.
↓
Down: Brazil getting blown out in the World Cup saddened an entire nation and few could ever rejoice in the sadness of so many hundreds of millions of people.

Mobile Internet stocks
Marijuana stocks
The growth in mobile Internet usage has exploded the past few years and the stock prices of companies benefitting from this trend have similarly exploded. Startups with no revenues or profits but booming user growth like Instagram and SnapChat have become worth billions in record time. When looking for “the next big thing,” be on the lookout for mobile applications and websites that are simple and fun, with wide mainstream appeal. Don’t worry about pesky revenues or profits; it’s basically a popularity contest.
With more and more states legalizing marijuana, this sector was the single hottest sector in the entire world for the first few months of 2014. Things have cooled down a bit recently, as those initial gains could not be sustained, but I fully expect this sector to rise again in the future given the trends and popularity of this “medicine.” Signs of a comeback will include tremendous press and further legalization news, ideally grouped with uptrending stock prices in all of the most popular marijuana stocks.

The term “superhero wasn’t coined until 1917, but they had been around before then. Louis Feuillade used early versions of them in his silent-era serials, including the titular star of 1915’s “Judex — a caped avenger who, rather than take down all criminals, works on just one: an unscrupulous banker who he imprisons. Newly out on disc, the 1963 remake crams the 12-part, five-and-a-halfhour epic and crams it into 97 densely nutty minutes.

Franju is best known for the bone-chilling horror “Eyes Without a Face, whose centerpiece is an extended experimental surgery scene. He was a stylist whose work, as Geoffrey O’Brien puts it in the set’s liner notes, was like simultaneously watching a “documentary and a dream come to life. Plenty of weird, impossible events creep up — such as a scene where Judex rocks a bird mask — but they’re presented with a deadpan naturalism that makes them seem stranger still.

Tough talk EMMANUELLE SEIGNER PLAYS AN ACTRESS MESSING WITH A THEATER DIRECTOR IN “VENUS IN FUR.”
Interview. Emmanuelle Seigner doesn’t mince words about herself or about her husband, Roman Polanski. Emmanuelle Seigner is nothing if not honest. The actress is getting raves for her role in “Venus in Fur,” directed by her husband, Roman Polanski, in which she plays an ac-
tress clashing with a theater director (Mathieu Amalric). “I think this is my first big great role,” Seigner confesses. “Which is sad. But let’s face it, it’s true.” She does tear into the role of Vanda, who effortlessly slips in and out of the character for which she’s auditioning. She liked Vanda’s un-realness. “She has a bag in which she has everything, like Mary Poppins. There’s something not real about her.”
“It’s not realistic,” she says. “Like ‘Rosemary’s Baby,’ you don’t know if it’s all in his imagination. Or maybe [her character is] a goddess. Or maybe she’s just a girl who wants to take revenge and give him a lesson.” How does Polanski treat his wife on the set? “He treats me like the other actors,” she reveals. She says he doesn’t confide in her on his artistic decisions — ever. “He’s not a very talkative person. He’s charming, but he doesn’t talk

Everyone’s a critic
Seigner on Polanski “Venus in Fur” was also a chance to work again with one of her favorite filmmakers: her husband. “What I like about this movie is it’s closer to [Polanski’s] older movies, like ‘Knife in the Water,’ ‘Repulsion’ [and] ‘Cul-de-sac.’” It turns out that she’s candid about Polanski’s movies, too. When asked about his previous theatrical adaptation, “Carnage,” she says, “‘Carnage’ is not a Polanski movie to me. It’s very bourgeois. I think any director could have done that movie. It’s a good movie, and it’s very well-acted. But to me it’s not the kind of Polanski movie I love.” When asked if she told him that, she replies, “Yeah!” Does
so much about himself or what he’s going to do. He just does it. He’s not a word man, he’s an action man.” That sounds similar to her own approach to acting: “I don’t think about it too much. I just do it. My approach is not intellectual at all. I just learn my lines then I let myself do it without thinking too much.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Cayman Islands. Touch a stingray, visit hell on Earth, and more awaits. Go to any Caribbean island and you’ll enjoy white sand, blue waters, cold drinks and hot nightlife. But experience all that in Cayman Islands, and you won’t be fighting for a hammock on the beach with college kids on spring break. It’s the perfect tourist destination for the nontourist, and the main island — Grand Cayman — is small enough to hit all the main attractions during your weeklong vacation, whether it’s adults-only or with the kids.

Seven Mile Beach Send a postcard
Go to hell! One tourist trap on Grand Cayman that’s a must-do is a 15-minute stop at hell. Ivan Farrington, known to the locals as Satan, will greet you with a “How the hell are ya?” while you shop for all the standard tourist kitsch — emblazoned with “I’ve been to Hell and back.” Be sure to grab a postcard to drop in the mailbox outside the fiery red building so you can prove you visited hell. And for a small donation, snap a pic and get a cheek kiss from the Prince of Darkness. Make sure you take photos of the black limestone formations that look like they came from hell itself.
Most of the main island’s resorts are on the western shore of Grand Cayman, nestled on Seven Mile Beach. Bring your pets or do some grilling. Just south of the beach is the capital, George Town, where animal lovers must stop at Cayman Turtle Farm, a nature park and green sea turtle breeding farm. Reach into one of the center’s many pools to pick up one of the reptiles; hold tight with one hand and use your other to massage its neck or head. For lunch, don’t miss conch fritters at Guy Harvey’s Restaurant & Bar as you watch the cruise ships dock.

beach to stop by Pedro St. James, a historically accurate three-story reconstruction of plantation owner William Eden’s 1780 home. A tour guide walks you through each room, sharing the history of the island and the site, which overlooks a lush landscape and mahogany trees. It also boasts some of the island’s best ocean views from atop its
limestone bluff. Chickens — whose ancestors are among the first animal settlers on the island in the late-1800s — roam the gardens.
Stingray City Say you swam with stingrays on Grand Cayman — something you can only do in a
few parts of the world. A speedboat, that you can help drive, takes you out to shallow sandbars in the North Sound of the island where the water is crystal-clear. Stingrays in their natural habitat — used to people swimming there and feeding them over the decades — glide through the water all around you, allowing you to feed them squid, hold
them and even kiss them. You’ll have snorkeling gear so you can see these creatures in action underwater. After your close encounter with the stingrays, Rum Point offers shipwreck diving, or just relax in a hammock. CHRISTINA PACIOLLA @cpaciolla

The Londoner The newest project from developer David Morritt, an English expat who fell in love with Cayman Islands more than 25 years ago, is The Londoner, a new line of luxury suites, all overlooking the water. Morritt has really built up the island’s east end, calling it “a jewel in the crown.” The resort works with Interval International, which specializes in time-shares, and you can trade one for stays at other vacation spots worldwide. The resort has two restaurants, a spa, tennis courts and a shopping center. Water sports are popular — you can snorkel around the dock at the island’s only restaurant on a pier — and the infinity pool offers beach views.
If you end up not wanting to leave Cayman Islands, The Londoner is a more permanent way to stay. / PROVIDED

Re: ‘Violent cycle’ (Metro, July 14) I agreed with most of what letter writer C. Hanson had to say, but have to object to his statement that Israel is denying Palestine statehood. Palestine could be an independent state tomorrow, if the Palestinians and their leaders choose to do so. However, they won’t, as this will deny their leadership a convenient scapegoat for their own failures, along with their Arab
The Supreme Court recently considered the question of whether police can search cell phones, particularly smartphones, of arrested suspects. The court got it right when it ruled on June 25 that warrants are required. The ruling goes a long way toward ensuring the privacy rights of all Americans. The decision in this case, Riley v. MLB. Boston is struggling as it hits the halfway point well outside of the playoffs. The Red Sox have only five batters who quality for statistical records, which goes to show just how inconsistent their lineup has been in 2014. No surprise, they’ve struggled to a 43-52 record ord at the All-Star break coming ming off one of the most surprisprisingly enjoyable seasons in franchise history. The season may not be over yet, but it certainly has that feeling at eight games back k in the wild-card race. Metro takes a look att the key contributors on offense ense — those five mentioned d above — and grades a disappointing first half. MARK OSBORNE @MetroNYSports

Mike Napoli
Dustin Pedroia
Xander Bogaerts
The Red Sox were probably expecting more than 34 RBIs out of someone hitting in the middle of the lineup, but all of Napoli’s other numbers (.266 average, .389 OBP, 10 HR) are on pace with or better than he did last season. He needs to improve his .187 average with runners in scoring position. Grade: B–
The 30-year-old keeps plugging away, though he’s not at the same level he was a few years ago. He’s bounced back from a June in which he hit .267 to a July where he is hitting .333. The power outage remains. He has two homers since May 11 and is on pace to hit fewer than last year’s nine bombs. Grade: B–
The Red Sox would likely rather use Will Middlebrooks or Stephen Drew in the lineup, but neither has deserved it. Bogaerts hasn’t much either, though at least he’s been healthy. He’s shown a little bit of power (six homers), but little else to get excited about. Grade: C–

Jackie Bradley Jr.
BRADLEY HAS YET TO SHOW THE TALENT THAT MADE HIM A TOP PROSPECT. GETTY IMAGES
Fans, and probably the front office, were expecting much more out of Bradley in his first full season in the bigs. He’s hitting .227 with just one home run. His power hasn’t come at the next level and neither has his average. He’s just taking up space now. Grade: D

ORTIZ IS LEADING THE LEAGUE IN INTENTIONAL WALKS, PARTLY DUE TO THE WEAK LINEUP. GETTY IMAGES
The power remains for Ortiz (20 home runs), but the wear and tear may be beginning to show on the 38-year-old. After three straight years over .300, he’s batting .255 and on pace for his worst season since 2009. Grade: C
