Boston. It wouldn’t be game day at Fenway Park without 37,000-plus fans singing along to Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline.” Metro spent nine innings with the men who choose the tunes at America’s oldest ballpark to find out what goes into getting the fans — and the players — pumped up throughout the game. “My relationship with this man as a co-worker is the strangest I’ve ever had, because I want to maintain that fandom. “Somehow we all ended up at the same bar after a game. The players had all gone to see Black Star at the House of Blues, and they came to the Tavern afterward. And I had played the Black Star tune ‘Definition’ like, two days before for Ortiz at batting practice and he looked up at me like, ‘Meh.’ And at the bar when I asked him if he liked Black Star he said, ‘Yeah.’ So then I asked why he had given me that reaction. He said, ‘Sometimes I just like to f— with you.’”

TJ Connelly and Josh Kantor have invented a word to describe the sweet spot they try to hit when choosing the songs to play for the Fenway faithful. Boston’s ballpark DJ and organ player both inject a sense of humor into their selections without making fun of what’s actually going on in the game. “The guideline is whether your joke is cruel or whimsical,” says Connelly, who has been the full-time Red Sox DJ since 2008. “The middle ground, of course, is crimsical.” As Connelly speaks, he’s cuing up music for the Sox to take batting practice to. The selections run the gamut from classic rock to country to hip-hop, as he watches the reactions of the players. “Down on the Corner” prompts catcher David Ross to turn the bat he’s holding into a guitar. Ross will later do the Roger Rabbit dance to Ice Cube’s

“We Be Clubbin’.” When Connelly crossfades from one song to another, it’s hard not to notice that he has written the name Pedroia on his wrist. He needs to remind himself that the second baseman for the Sox has requested to change his walk-up song again. Many of the players take their song selections seri-
ously, but Dustin Pedroia and designated hitter David Ortiz even more so. “The man is a surgeon of walk-up music,” says Connelly about Big Papi (see sidebar for more on the musical preferences of No. 34). Throughout the game, Connelly keeps in close contact with Kantor, the organ player who isn’t in the soundbooth with Connelly, but is tucked away in a corner of the State Street Pavilion Club. The two discuss musical strategy throughout the game and what would sound best for those in the stands — the original recording of a song, or a reworked version on the organ. Both take requests via Twitter throughout the game. Kantor, who also plays keys for several bands — including an R.E.M. side project gone wild called The Baseball
Project — prides himself on playing Top 40 hits and indie hits that you wouldn’t expect to hear on organ. “You’ll sort of play yourself into irrelevance if you don’t update your repertoire,” says Kantor. “It’s a large audience and it’s not necessarily a music audience. But it’s also fun to throw in one every once in a while that’s a little off the beaten path but is going to be really appreciated by the folks who are playing close attention.” Connelly agrees. His philosophy when playing a song with hidden meaning: “Most importantly it has to have the right energy for the game. And either the crowd will not know what it is or find it cute.” PAT HEALY @metrousmusic

Painful City takes aim at parking apps prior Varicose Veins? to Haystack launch Boston. Mayor Marty Walsh spoke out against apps that “inflate” the cost of Hub parking spaces. On the same day a Baltimorebased parking app was set to hold its Boston launch party, Mayor Marty Walsh threatened to take action against apps that he says inflate the cost of publicly owned parking spaces. Haystack, a mobile app, lets users buy and sell street parking spots in real-time. It was due to launch in Boston this week and was scheduled to have its launch party Tuesday. The Boston Transportation Department “will continue to evaluate any and all systems that may infringe upon the public’s right to equal access and/or those that may artificially inflate the cost of spaces on Boston roadways and in municipal off-street parking lots, and BTD will take appropriate measures to prohibit any such app that [does so],” Walsh said. A 19-year-old Massachusetts Institute of Technology student is back in the United States after more than six weeks flying solo around the world. He now hopes to become a world-record holder for his effort. Matt Guthmiller, a South Dakota native, sought to break the world record for the youngest person to fly solo around the globe. Guthmiller, who will enter his sophomore year at MIT in the fall, spoke with Metro about his journey as he was flying from Kuala Lumpur to Manila. Asked about potentially becoming the youngest
person ever to fly solo around the world, Guthmiller said at the time, “Ultimately … the biggest thing is not the record, just to hopefully inspire other people.” According to Guinness World Records, before Guthmiller took off, the youngest person to fly solo around the world was California-native Jack Wiegand, who completed the trip at 21 years old. Wiegand made the trip in June 2013 in just under two months. A spokeswoman for Guinness World Records said that the organization is awaiting his log books and evidence from the journey to be sent to them. Once that happens and they can confirm his flight, which may take a couple of days, the record will be official. MICHAEL NAUGHTON @MetroBosMike

State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said the fire was started by an electrical failure in an empty space between the second and third floors of the Branch Street building and that it burned for some time. It eventually broke through the space, became visible and fed off of a sudden rush of oxygen. METRO

Virginia. President Obama weighed in on the depleted fund after taking a wild ride in a car simulator. President Barack Obama on Tuesday threw his weight behind a temporary fix for the depleted Highway Trust Fund during an event to tout his administration’s work with the private sector to develop cars that communicate using wireless technology. The Republican-controlled House of Representatives was
poised on Tuesday to approve a $10 billion infusion for the fund. The funds would be enough to keep money flowing to road, bridge and transit projects at least through the end of May 2015. Without new money, the Department of Transportation has said it will start to cut back federal funding for projects by nearly a third on Aug. 1. This puts hundreds of thousands of jobs at risk. Jay Z and Beyonce’s elevator going up Jay Z and Beyonce reportedly have added a new member to their summer tour entourage: a marriage counselor — well, virtually at least. Sources tell the Daily Mirror that the married moguls have been meeting with a therapist via Skype while on the road to keep their relationship on course. “They have known their therapist for a long time and try to have weekly sessions just to keep communication open and make sure there are no misunderstandings,” says a source familiar with the couple’s dealings. And this is the point where the source would probably wink and whisper, “You know, like that whole elevator thing!” Though we don’t have it on record that the source did say that. What we do have is the source concluding that “It’s about maintenance rather than trying to fix anything hugely wrong.”

London Lohan becoming a permanent reality

Lohan is loving London. Whew!
Lindsay Lohan is almost officially London’s problem, so everybody just keep quiet until she’s gone, OK? She finally scored herself a gig over there, and she’s reportedly eager to make the move permanent, to the relief of drivers and nightclub patrons across the U.S. “I have a great place. It’s very light and I feel safe,” Lohan tells the Daily Express. “I think I am making the move to come over here.” Lohan starts her run on the West End stage later this year, and she’s already looking to head off speculation that she’ll flake out on work. “I’m at a place in my life where I like the commitment. I’m looking forward to that part of it,” she says. You go, girl. No, really: Go.

Zoe Saldana doesn’t care if people think she and her husband of one year, Marco Perego, got hitched too soon after they started dating. “I don’t do the ABCs,” she tells Marie Claire. “I do what my heart says, what my heart feels. So from the moment I met my husband, we were together. We knew.” The “Guardians of the Galaxy” star applies the same attitude to shopping as she does to her marriage. “I don’t just window shop. I don’t have the time or the energy or the attention span for that,” she says. “I need a pair of jeans, I go and — boom — get them. I met my husband, I wasn’t going to try it out and see if it works. No, I felt it. I went with the feeling.”

Braff kicked the habit Zach Braff got a lot of attention when he turned to Kickstarter to raise money for his second film as a director, “Wish I Was Here” — and not all of it was positive. The campaign was a resounding success, and the film went on to debut at the Sundance Film Festival, but Braff found himself the focus of more than a little online ire. A good Internet mantra is “never read the comments.” Have you taken that to heart? Oh, I never read comments. If you’re a creator of content and you’re not a masochist, you know where not to go. You don’t go to comments sections on IMDb or Deadline or any of those places because it’s just a place for people to be mean for meanness’ sake. Everyone should be able to take criti-

12 years a father Interview. Ethan Hawke can finally talk about “Boyhood, the secret project he’s been in since 2002.
Ethan Hawke has been waiting a long, long time to talk about his new film, “Boyhood. Directed by regular collaborator Richard Linklater, the film was made a month at a time over the course of 12 years to chronicle the development of a boy (Ellar Coltrane) from ages 5 to 18, as well as his divorced parents (Hawke and Patricia Arquette). But they had to keep quiet — in the age of the Internet, no less. “Last year, when Rick and I were doing press for ‘Before Midnight,’ people really started asking us a lot about it for the first time, Hawke says. “For a long time, even if it would be on IMDb or something, it didn’t really make people’s radar. It was hard for people to even understand what we were up to, and we certainly didn’t want to talk too much about it before it was real. The truth is, we really tried not to talk about it, but sometimes it was impossible. I would get too excited, and I have a blabbermouth anyway. “Boyhood was a different kind of film in more ways than one. “Most movies are sprints
and just require an immediate kind of discipline. But this movie required real patience, he explains. “Rarely in film do you have that kind of gestation process. Rick was kind of born a fully developed filmmaker. I mean, ‘Dazed and Confused’ was his second film, and it’s an incredibly well-made film. He hasn’t changed much, so I don’t think it was hard for him to maintain a continuity of style and approach over 12 years. It’s just who he is. This is also Hawke’s eighth film with Linklater, whom he first worked with on “Before Sunrise. “Linklater has a specific kind of ethos to his films that I’m really happy to be a part of. So many movies, even if they’re really entertaining and exciting and thrilling and everything, they leave you kind of feeling badly about your own life — like why you’re not a superhero or why you don’t ever get to meet blue aliens. Even being on the Titanic seems exciting! “Our lives seem so full of minutiae and seem so much less than your average CIA narrative, he says. “But Rick seems to be satisfied with life as it is, and he doesn’t feel the need to hyperbolize it. He thinks it’s pretty dramatic and beautiful and exciting as it is. For me, that’s kind of revolutionary.
Predictions
May the Force be with you There’s a moment in the film, sometime around 2005 or 2006, when you discuss the idea of making new “Star Wars films. How did you know? The timing of it’s fantastic, but certainly we all had a hunch about it. I had a hunch they’d milk that thing to death. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick

When Matt Price and his band, Movers & Shakers, needed to raise $1,000 to rehabilitate their ramshackle studio five years ago, the Boston-based musicians staged a downhome neighborhood gathering — a couple local music acts, a few barbecues and coolers stocked with cans of Narragansett — in the studio’s parking lot. “At first we didn’t know if we were going to get away with having an event in the parking lot, but when everything worked out and the place was packed to the sidewalk’s edge we knew this was something we had to continue doing,” says Price. Now in its fifth year, Starlab Fest, named after the studio, has become an annual delight for Somerville’s hotbed of artistic souls. The all-day event boasts 12 homegrown bands ranging from surf-rock (Beware The Dangers of a Ghost Scorpion) to punk (Animal Mother, Nice Guys) to hip-hop (Boogie Boy Metal Mouth), as well as a flea market curated by Somerville’s High Energy Vintage and a cookout. “We always joke about how hyperlocal Starlab Fest is, but we really try and make a point of curating and planning the event around the artists, musicians and people that not only Quoted

inhabit Somerville but Boston in general,” says Price. This Saturday, Union Square will be abuzz with the happy glow of Starlab Fest 2014, now spanning two locations to accommodate the festival’s growing interests, which include short-film screenings from local directors, live painting from local artists and a comedy show. As Starlab Studios turns the parking lot of its recording studio into a battle royale of musical and art goodness, revelers can dance, mingle and celebrate the vibrant art and music community in Somerville. “There’s a great collaborative spirit here in Somerville that makes putting together events like this exciting and fun,” says Price. “The receptiveness of local vendors and artists to get involved and be a part of Starlab Fest seriously encourages a strong neighborly vibe that becomes obvious when you’re here.” As visitors traipse from one location to the next, Starlab Fest might feel less like a music festival and more like a little artistic pop-up city all its own, where bands play outdoors and people can eat, drink and shop without ever suffering a poorly chosen note. “Starlab’s platform was born out of a very simple goal,” says Price. “Organize an event that casually brings the community together through the celebration of creative curiosity and collaboration.”

We tend to fret the most over our bodies. We anguish over diets and exercise and how much we’re moving and how much we’re sitting. (And never forget: Sitting equals death.) We’re so busy with physical health that we can forget there’s another aspect of our bodies that we should be unhealthily freaking out over: our brains. When the mind goes, it doesn’t matter how our knees feel or abs look. Some of us are smart enough to keep our minds regularly active; some believe doing a daily crossword staves off Alzheimer’s. That might be true, and if so, might hold true for Lumosity, too. Founded
in 2007, the online “brain training” company has sought, using the combined mental prowess of neuroscientists, to make simple games to activate the mind. One can play these on computers or on a smartphone, since if you’re going to mess around with your phone to kill some time, you might as well do something productive. First, Lumosity asks what cognitive skills you’re looking to improve, such as “lose fewer objects” or “remember people’s names.” From there, you can choose from over 40 games, which include ones for memory — such as recreating patterns — or ones that test mental quickness. One has you judging whether the same shape has been repeated, which is harder than you might think.

Roll ’em up. Televisions that you can bend and fold may soon be real For years now, science has dreamt of creating fully flexible screens, allowing us to watch old “Cheers” episodes on something pliable. But each time a new hurdle is surpassed, a new one crops up to take its place. Electronics manufacturer LG, however, might have just cracked the code. The company has announced it has just created an 18-inch OLED display that is so flexible it can be rolled into a tube, which would make for
one hell of a high-tech kaleidoscope. The working prototype has a resolution of 1,200 x 800, which is pretty darn crisp. How does it work? The backside is outfitted with a polyamide film that allows for ultimate pliability and an even thinner screen. Of course, this is just a prototype, so who knows when these will start showing (or rolling) up on store shelves. Also, nobody really wants to watch “Cheers” that way (yet). LAWRENCE BONK

NO EQU TO B
As a psychotherapist who works with young adults, I often use metaphors from pop culture in my private practice. So when my 20-something client and professed “Harry Potter” devotee grew anxious about visiting her “Dementor” of a mother-in-law in Los Angeles, I naturally inquired, “What would Harry Potter do?” “Well, of course, he would conjure his Patronus,” she replied. A Patronus is a charm that wards off Dementors, specters that “drain peace, hope and happiness.” The only way to ward off a Dementor is with the Patronus charm, which requires “the concentration on a powerfully happy memory” — in other words, the power of positive thinking. Apparently, “Potter” creator J.K. Rowling was not only a genius of fantasy children’s fiction, but also a sorcerer of pop psychology. Rowling’s therapeutic savvy further reveals itself in the spell to defend against Boggarts. A lesser menace in the wizarding world, these shape-shifting creatures assume the form of their observer’s worst fear — but evaporate at the recitation of “Riddikulus!” which transforms the Boggart into

Sarah, my aforementioned client, was a writer whose selfrevelatory blog posts addressed racism and religious hypocrisy. On a weekly basis, she received an esteem-boosting slew of emails from her growing fan base. Her confidence eroded, however, in the presence of her mother-in-law, who didn’t share the same appreciation for Sarah’s talents. As her visit to California approached, we began to brainstorm how she might summon her own version of

took certain liberties with her talisman. She needed to anchor herself in something physically tangible. After tossing around a few ideas, Sarah returned
home and assembled a collage of photographs of loved ones, including her and her husband in their happiest times. Next, she cut out the grateful emails and wove them around the photographs, interlaced with powerful images and affirmations that she cut out from magazines. Sarah was encouraged to meditate on her makeshift Patronus so that she could conjure it in her mind at will. Additionally, she brought her collage to Los Angeles. The experiment was a success. When dark thoughts began to creep in after spending the day with her husband’s family, Sarah studied her Patronus and felt better.

Who should get a genetic test? People who should consider genetic testing include those with a strong personal or family history of cancer. Clues to inherited cancers include: cancers diagnosed at a young age, multiple cancers in one person, rare or unusual cancers, the presence of related cancers in a family over generations. Testing is recommended for people who have a known genetic mutation in their family that they could inherit. What happens at a genetic test?
You can identify some of these inherited gene mutations—including the BRCA mutation— through genetic testing.
Genetic testing is not as scary as it may sound. You will meet with a genetic counselor and often a physician to review your family history (see below) and give permission for the testing. Testing is performed on a blood or saliva sample which is sent to a lab that specializes in genetics. The results are returned to the physician and genetic counselor, who will
“Depending on family and personal history, we can test for genes that show an increased risk for developing cancer,” says Huma Q. Rana, MD, clinical director for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Center for Cancer Genetics and Prevention. “We can then determine a patient’s cancer risk and come up with a plan to monitor for cancer or reduce the risk of developing cancer.”
Huma Q. Rana, MD, clinical director, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Center for Cancer Genetics and Prevention
Below are answers to some important questions about genetic testing:
discuss them with you and arrange appropriate follow-up care. What is a genetic counselor? Genetic counselors are trained; licensed professionals who help educate patients about inherited cancer syndromes and help them to understand confusing or uncertain genetic test results. The counselors also help individuals gather family history, discuss options for risk management and family planning and provide, or refer individuals, for psychosocial support as needed. What steps do you have to take before getting a genetic test? Before getting a genetic test, you will sit down with a genetic counselor and physician who will help determine if you could be at risk for a cancer caused by an inherited genetic mutation. Information regarding your and your immediate family’s specific cancer(s), age(s) at diagnosis, or information about pre-cancerous conditions such as colon polyps should be brought to this meeting as well as copies of personal or family genetic test results. If possible, you should also collect other medical records such as pathology reports, surgical reports, or summary notes. What does a positive genetic test mean? A positive genetic test does not equal a cancer diagnosis.
Want to learn more? The Susan F. Smith Center for Women’s Cancers at Dana-Farber is partnering with Living Beyond Breast Cancer for a live video webchat, “The Truth About BRCA Testing and Genetic Risk,” on Wed., July 16 at 1 p.m. Huma Q. Rana, MD, clinical director for Dana-Farber’s Center for Cancer Genetics and Prevention, will answer your questions live. Email your questions for Dr. Rana to: webchats@dfci.harvard.edu.
“A positive test does not mean you have cancer or that you will necessarily develop it, but rather that your chances of developing it are higher than that of the average person,” Rana explains. If you have a mutation that can cause cancer, you will work with a genetic counselor and physician to create a management plan. This plan informs you of what could happen, and helps outline screenings or other options to prevent cancer from developing. Tooth Whitening: The White Way to Get a Better Smile by Dr. John Madden Your smile is often the first thing someone will notice about you. Tooth whitening is a popular way to improve your smile by making your teeth look much whiter and healthier. It also can give you a more youthful appearance. How Can Tooth Whitening Help Your Smile? Tooth whitening has become increasingly popular. In-office or takehome whitening kits developed by a dentist can be used not only to remove nasty stains from tea, coffee and smoking, but also to whiten the natural underlying shade of the tooth. With very little time and expense, tooth whitening can transform dull, stained teeth into bright, shiny and healthy-looking teeth. What Tooth Whitening Options Are Available? Tooth whitening may be performed in a dental practice, or with a take-home bleaching kit that is custom-made by a dentist for your particular teeth. Depending on your unique needs, a dentist can use different techniques and products to provide the best approach for your situation. Although tooth whitening products also are available in stores, these are not as effective as the whitening techniques available at your dentist. The methods used by a dentist include custom-made trays, which are made to specifically fit your teeth. The whitening products are applied to the trays, which are then worn overnight, or for shorter periods of time. With custom-made trays the whitening product is targeted towards the stains on your teeth and is much less likely to irritate your gums. The custom trays made by your dentist allow a stronger, more effective whitening product to be used, which results in whiter and brighter teeth and fewer side effects to your gums, keeping them healthy as well. What Are the Benefits of Take-Home Kits Versus In-Office Whitening? In-office whitening offers patients results within an hour or so. When done under the supervision of your dentist in a dental office, more effective whitening agents can be safely applied to your teeth to create whiter results in a very short period of time. While take-home bleaching kits supplied by a dentist may take more time to get the result you want than in-office techniques, they also offer an effective way to whiten teeth, and they can be used repeatedly over time to keep your teeth bright and white. Can People with Sensitive Teeth Have Their Teeth Whitened? Many patients with sensitive teeth are still able to achieve a whiter smile using whitening products. Many whitening products contain components that prevent sensitivity from arising, and this is especially true of the high quality whitening products which experienced dentists use. If this is something that concerns you, it is best to discuss this with a dentist to determine the best approach for your situation. Are All Whitening Products and Techniques the Same? No. Just like everything else in life, there are variations in quality, expertise, materials and experience. A highly-skilled dentist will achieve the best result for you and your smile. Dr. John Madden B.S., B.A., B.Dent.Sc.. is a clinical instructor within the Division of Prosthodontics at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in downtown Boston. Dr. Madden also sees patients at Tufts Dental Associates, the full-service faculty practice at Tufts Dental School. Tufts Dental Associates offers a full range of general and specialty dental services within one practice.

From our all-laser, bladeless LASIK procedure – to exciting developments like our Visian Implantable lens - our commitment to leading edge technology is surpassed only by our dedication to personalized patient care. Patients of New England Eye Center find confidence in knowing we offer experience you can trust and technology you can rely on. NASA-Approved LASIK - Our all-laser, bladeless LASIK at New England Eye Center has greatly improved results and helped take the fear out of having LASIK. The vast majority of our LASIK and PRK patients now achieve 20/20 vision at distance without glasses or contact lenses. Our method of LASIK is the same type approved for NASA astronauts and military pilots. Implantable Contact Lens - New England Eye Center is among a select group of practices in the country offering patients the benefits of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL). Unlike LASIK, the Visian corrects vision by inserting a delicate intraocular lens-like device atop the eye’s natural lens, which is why the Visian is also referred to as the ‘Implantable Contact Lens.’ All of the refractive surgeons at New England Eye Center are qualified and experienced in performing this brief outpatient procedure to insert the Visian ICL. Because no corneal or other tissue is removed in the Visian ICL procedure, visual recovery is extremely rapid and the ICL can potentially be replaced if the eye’s focus changes over time. Refractive Lens Exchange - If you’re frustrated with reading glasses and bifocals, our refractive specialists perform a procedure known as Refractive Lens Exchange. By replacing your eye’s aging natural lens with a Intraocular Lens Implant customized specifically for your visual needs - and your lifestyle - allowing you to see better, look younger and never have to worry about developing cataracts! Laser Cataract Surgery - For seniors experiencing changes in their vision – or who have been diagnosed with a cataract – New England Eye Center is turning the dream of Laser Cataract Surgery into reality. We are currently among only the top 3% of practices in the country to offer patients the added precision and accuracy of Laser Cataract Surgery using OptiMedicaÂŽ Catalys™ Precision Laser System. This year, take your vision to the NEXT LEVEL by giving yourself or a loved one the Gift of Sight. Now that’s a Gift that keeps on Giving. A blessed New Year from the surgeons and staff of New England Eye Center.

Reading to your kids is a long-term gift
America shouldn’t have to suffer gun violence for generations
Re: ‘5 reasons to read to your kids’ (Metro, July 15) Very interesting and truthful article. I experienced that with my son, who’s now 16 years old. Back when he was a baby, I read to him while waiting for the day care to open its doors. Today I can say I did something for my son that he will treasure for the rest of his life: a love for reading.
living in a country where the gun lobby is so strong that there will never be a change for the good. Maybe if more celebrities take up the cause, we would have more of a chance to make a change, since it seems that so many Americans look up to professional sports figures and celebrities.
Another senseless shooting took place in Houston recently, and I still lose sleep at night wondering why this country allows guns to be owned by people who are not fit to own one. I do not want to accept the fact that my children and their children will always be

It’s time to ensure that our federal laws apply to all domestic abusers, making it more difficult for these violent individuals to get guns and do ever more harm.

British Open betting guide The Open Championship begins early Thursday morning — and a certain Tiger is back on the prowl looking for a major title. The third major of the golf calendar is upon us and while he may only be an 18-1 shot to win, Tiger Woods is back in the sports news. Woods missed the Masters and U.S. Open after undergoing back surgery. But he’s ready to go at Royal Liverpool. Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and the usual big names will all be there as well. But while there will be 156 players vying for the $1.67 million first-place prize, we look at a handful of players who could put money in your pocket. MARK OSBORNE @MetroNYSports

Justin Rose: 14-1 The last time an Englishman won was 22 years ago, but Rose is tied atop the books. He won June 29 at the National and he’s not a bad choice, even as favorite. Rory McIlroy: 14-1 He missed the cut at the Irish Open a few weeks ago and would seem an unlikely choice to win.

Adam Scott: 16-1 He hasn’t played a tourney since the U.S. Open, but has two straight top-3 finishes at the British Open.
Rickie Fowler: 33-1 He’s still waiting to break through in a major, but he’s been playing well in every big event this year. He has Top-5 finishes in the WGC Match Play, Masters and U.S. Open. He was eighth last week in Scotland.

Athletics (59-36) The Athletics left little doubt they are the best team in baseball at the All-Star break, winning seven of their last 10. They had two participants in the Home Run Derby in Yoenis Cespedes (who won for the second-straight year) and Josh Donaldson, who have played major roles in the A’s second highest-scoring oense in the AL. They also have a major leagueleading plus-145 run differential.

Los Angeles’ rotation has paced them all year as Clayton Kershaw’s 11 wins are tied for third in the NL and Josh Beckett’s 2.26 ERA is also third.
Baltimore closed out the unoďŹƒcial ďŹ rst half of the season strong to open up a four-game lead over the Blue Jays in the American League East.
The Nats have set themselves up well. They are tied with the Braves in the NL East, but do they have the experience to stay there when it matters most in September?
New York took a real blow last week when it was learned rookie Masahiro Tanaka has a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow.

Giants (52-43)
Braves (52-43)
Indians (47-47)
Things aren’t going well for the Brewers as they have dropped eight of their last 10 games and lead the NL Central by just one. For the year, the Brewers are 28-19 on the road, but just 25-24 at home.
Not only will the Giants be in the running for the NL West crown, but they will also be serious players for the NL wild card during the second half. Tim Hudson has regained his form this year.
The Braves and Nationals will be battling it out. Aside from getting tremendous starting pitching, Atlanta’s bullpen has been rock solid, led by Craig Kimbrel and his 29 saves.
A .500 record is a perfect way to sum up the Indians’ season so far. Only 7 1/2 games back in the division means Cleveland isn’t out of it yet, but the Tribe will need to get things going quickly.

Tigers (53-38)
Mariners (51-44)
Pirates (49-46)
Royals (46-42)
Following a sluggish start, the Tigers have been playing like the defending AL runner-ups of late as they have opened an 8 1/2-game lead on the Royals. Rick Porcello is tied for the league lead in wins with 12.
The Mariners have been led by ace Felix Hernandez and his AL-leading 2.12 ERA to earn the starting nod for the AL in the All-Star Game. Seattle faces the Angels this weekend.
Even at three games over .500, the Pirates are right in the race. Andrew McCutchen had a very productive ďŹ rst half, hitting .324 with 17 home runs and 61 RBIs. The Bucs are 3 1/2 games out.
At two games above .500, things could be better for the Royals if they could play better at home. They are 26-21 on the road, but 22-25 at home. Their only real shot at the playos is winning the Central.

Cardinals (52-44)
Reds (51-44)
Blue Jays (49-47)
Mets (45-50)
The hottest team in MLB may be the Angels at the moment as they have won ďŹ ve straight and nine of their last 10 games. Garrett Richards has been one of the biggest surprises in all of baseball.
With the Brewers falling, the Cards are just one game back. Adam Wainwright and his league-leading 12 wins and league-low 1.83 ERA paved the way for him to start for the NL in the All-Star Game.
The Reds have picked a good time to play their best baseball of the season. Despite being injured, ace hurler Johnny Cueto is ďŹ fth in the NL in wins with 10 and is second in ERA at 2.13.
Things are beginning to unravel for Toronto. Following the injury to slugger Edwin EncarnaciĂłn, Toronto has fallen out of ďŹ rst place in the AL East and trail the Orioles by four games.
The Mets, yes the Mets, are one of the hottest teams in the game at the break. They have won three straight and eight of their last 10 games, but still sit seven games out of ďŹ rst in the NL East.

Middlebrooks engaged to former NESN reporter Dell Will Middlebrooks may have cost Jenny Dell a job on NESN, but she’s clearly not holding it against him. Dell was the sideline reporter for the Red Sox on team-owned NESN, but she stepped down from the position before the season started due to their relationship. Dell bounced back quickly though and will be a sideline reporter for NFL on CBS this fall. METRO
