Strike talks continue as clock winds down Manhattan. MTA and LIRR officials spent Wednesday trying to reach a compromise before a looming strike. After intervention from Gov. Andrew Cuomo, leaders from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and a coalition of Long Island Rail Road unions met for five hours Wednesday after talks broke down earlier this week. Representatives for the labor group and the transit authority held the meeting in Midtown after Cuomo rang up both sides asking them to avoid holding Long Islanders “hostage by a strike.” “Both the MTA and the LIRR unions need to put the interests of New Yorkers first by returning to the table today and working continuously to avoid a strike,” Cuomo wrote. The most recent deal

from the MTA would offer a 17 percent salary bump over seven years — the unions want it over six. Both reportedly agreed to current employees contributing 2 percent of their salaries to health care. Moments before stepping into the talks, labor spokesman Anthony Simon said he was prepared for the unfortunate, but was stepping into the room with an open mind. “If the offer is an offer that we can discuss, that will move the ball forward,” he told reporters before the meeting. After the talks, Simon told reporters that they had made progress on Wednesday. Representatives from both sides said they plan to meet again on Thursday at 10 a.m. If no agreement is reached, the approximately 5,400 LIRR workers can still strike after the Saturday night deadline. Will tech blunt strike? If the strike by LIRR workers takes place, thousands will be impacted, especially in jobs that can’t telecommute. But the action would cause less trouble than the 1994 LIRR strike because of advances in communication technology. “Technology has certainly blunted that,” said professor Joseph Foudy of the New York University Stern School of Business. An expansion of a 21-acre greenway is part of a proposal announced by Mayor Bill de Blasio on Wednesday to revitalize Downtown Brooklyn. The proposal would also allow for retail stores on the first floors of some city buildings in the neighborhood, as well as more public spaces. The area was rezoned 10 years ago to facilitate residential development as well as establish an alternative business district in the wake of 9/11. Since then, the neighborhood has attracted more than $4 billion in private investment with more than 5,000 new residential units and 1,100 hotel rooms, according to

a report released this week by the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership. Several thousand more residential units are in the works, but de Blasio and other officials aim to make Downtown Brooklyn a more “dynamic” neighborhood. Under the proposal, the city would create a “Brooklyn Strand” greenway, connecting several existing parks and public spaces from the courthouses to the waterfront. The city is also working with locals to make some streets in the area safer for pedestrians, including Jay and Willoughby streets. Construction will begin this summer at the intersection of Flatbush Avenue and Fulton Street to create Fox Square. The city is also moving toward building a new 1-acre public space dubbed Willoughby Square, to be completed by the end of 2016.

A Manhattan woman is recovering Wednesday after a man pushed himself into her apartment and assaulted her. The woman was in her Washington Heights apartment when she answered the door at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. The suspect allegedly forced himself on the victim, 20, and raped her before fleeing. Authorities said the man had been inside the apartment building earlier and followed the woman into the elevator to her floor but not to her unit. Video showed the man to be a Hispanic male between 20 to 25 years old, approximately 6-foot-9, last seen wearing black pants and a shirt with stripes. CHESTER JESUS SORIA

A teen revving an ATV through a Brooklyn sidewalk over the weekend led police to discover a large cache of drugs, cash, guns and more ATVs — and led to the arrests of four men. Complaints came in about a person recklessly riding an ATV on a sidewalk near the Brooklyn Navy Yard at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. Unknown to the police, an officer on his way to the scene found Joel Soto, 19, of Brooklyn on an ATV on a nearby sidewalk. Soto fled, but the officer apprehended him. When is enough enough? The LIRR Strike by the numbers: Unionized Long Island Rail Road workers are the best paid in the nation. On average they make $87,000 a year – that’s 56% more than the average Long Islander. The MTA has offered to up their pay 17%, limit their healthcare contributions to 2%, and continue their already generous pensions. And we found a way to pay for it without raising fares or jeopardizing our long-term capital program by asking for modest changes for workers who haven’t even been hired yet. So current employees would get everything that they asked for, new employees would still be the best paid railroad employees in the nation, and all workers would still have great benefits and secure pensions. Even with all of this, the union leadership is still threatening to take the 5,400 unionized LIRR workers on strike, stranding 300,000 riders and causing massive disruption to families and businesses across Long Island.

NYC. City reminds on paid sick leave law Starting July 30, New Yorkers can use accrued paid sick days provided by a law swept into place by the de Blasio administration earlier this year. Lawmakers and volunteers across the five boroughs spent Wednesday reminding New Yorkers about the law. De Blasio donned a yellow T-shirt emblazoned with the hashtag “#paidsickleave” as he and Department of Consumer Affairs Commissioner Julie Menin — whose agency will administer the law — passed out fliers to commuters at the Atlantic Avenue subway station. “We don’t want to have a situation where people have to choose between their health and the ability to put food on the table for their families,” de Blasio said. City Council members similarly visited local subway stops to pass out pamphlets.

What it means Any New Yorker not eligible for paid sick leave who works more than 80 hours at a business with five or more employees can earn one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked. •

That means one can earn up to 40 hours of sick time every year to care for themselves or a family member.

Apple agrees to pay $450 million after e-book antitrust suit New York. Apple was found liable in 2013 for colluding with publishers to impede e-book competitors. Apple Inc. has agreed to pay $450 million to resolve state and consumer claims the iPad manufacturer conspired with five major publishers to fix e-book prices, according to court records filed Wednesday. The settlement, which would provide $400 million for consumers, is conditioned on the outcome of a pending appeal of a New York federal judge’s ruling last year that Apple was liable for violating antitrust laws.

A ruling by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York reversing the judge could, under the settlement, either reduce the amount Apple pays to $70 million, with $50 million for consumers, or eliminate payments altogether. “While we cannot predict the outcome of the

appeal with certainty, we are confident in the case we made against Apple at trial,” Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen said in a statement. The settlement, which requires approval of U.S. District Judge Denise Cote, had been announced in June. Terms were not disclosed at the time. REUTERS

WHEN YOU CAN’T PLEASE EVERYONE If there is one thing that can turn Republicans into whirling furies these days, it is the Supreme Court. The mere notion of another ruling from those do-gooder, elitist activists is enough to send GOPers spinning down the mall like so many Tasmanian devils. Oh, wait. I mean the Democrats. That’s who is enraged at the Supreme Court now. It’s hard to keep track, because as much as both sides praise the court and say they respect it one moment, the very next they order SCOTUS piùatas for their summer soirees. Gallup released a new poll this week showing that ever since the Hobby Lobby ruling propped up conservative notions about bosses, contraception and who foots the bill, Republicans have been feeling better about the court. risen 21 points since last September to just over 51 percent now. Democrats? Not so much. Oh, sure, they loved the court after the favorable Obamacare ruling in 2012. Back then, 68 percent of Dems approved. But this year, the court has wailed on the Obama White House, time and again spiking its policies. Now just 44 percent of Dems approve. I tend to think this is all a bad sign. Sure, political parties can be expected to oppose each other vigorously, just like all those soccer teams did at the World Cup. But blaming the referees for a loss, absent indisputable evidence of malfeasance, is the refuge of cowards and scoundrels. Certainly, the Supreme Court makes mistakes, just as we all do. But those mistakes can really be determined only in the context of history.

OMG! Stick-on knobs turn your tablet into a DJ mix workstation Watch out, David Guetta: these stick-on knobs will turn any tablet-toting person into a bona fide DJ. Tuna Knobs are suctioncup dials that can attach to a touchscreen and control your tablet like a DJ workstation. Dutch creator Samuel Verburg came up with the idea while interning at the Rotterdam-based design company Tweetonig. “We loved Tuna and worked for about four months to make a real product, ready for mass production,” explains John Tillema, product developer at Tweetonig. Compatible with iOS, Android or Windows devices, the prices of Tuna Knobs vary from $12 for a single knob to $115 for a set of 10 when they’re out before Christmas. Metro spoke with Tillema.

Visit us online at Metro.us/omg for more interviews. How did the idea of Tuna Knobs come about? While playing with all those DJ and MIDI controller apps on the iPad, Samuel missed the feel-

He came to us at Tweetonig and we started working together. What’s the appeal? Well, the best part is that it can be used on any mobile device. People will be using it on top of their favorite apps. You can best compare it with a stylus for drawing or writing. You could do it with your fingers, but it is unprecise. The main advantage is getting tactile feedback on a tablet. WANISE MARTINEZ

Fight nature with nature Mosquitoes. Keep bugs away without chemicals.

$1

Yes, they’re a bummer on an otherwise perfect summer day. But mosquitoes can also carry diseases, including the West Nile virus, which was just detected in New York City this week. With 170 mosquito species in North America alone, you should be slathering on repellent before your night out like you apply sunscreen in the morning. But not all repellents are created equal. Look for ones that contain the least amount of DEET, a common active ingredient that should be washed off after you return home. Try one of these affordable natural products made with essential oils.

DATING

Guinea pig. A single newspaper man reluctantly agreed to meet with a romantic advisor to help him date in real life, not just online. I’m at a Lower East Side former-speakeasy on a modest weekday night getting schooled by Jared Sais, a professional dating coach. Sais is teaching me in the ways of what was once a very common — and to some, like me, cripplingly terrifying — social convention: trying to pick up complete strangers in public places rather than do so online. The Internet allegedly made this much easier. Various apps (Tinder, Grindr, whatever you like) break the ice for us. If we don’t go that route, we can simply woo people with our online personalities, which may be funnier, smarter, more charming and less prone to unsightly nervous tics than our vastly disappointing in-person selves. But that doesn’t always work. And so I’m trying it old school, just for a lark. From birth to age 4, Sais was deaf, and only gained his hearing after some miraculous experiments. This period gave him an unusually strong gift for reading body language. He decided he’d use this skill for a noble cause: He goes out with people who require romantic advising and steers them through the thing that probably frightens them more than dying. But he’s no mere Hitch, the “date doctor” once essayed on film by Will Smith. And he’s not about sex. He boasts, with a huge grin, that three of his clients have gotten married this year. There’s an inevitable dude-ness to some of his techniques, but they can all — or at least most — be applied to any gender or sexual preference. Also, stick with two drinks, tops. This seems wise. So here we go. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Sais, who is CEO of the Non-Verbal Game, says it’s possible for you to hit on anyone, anywhere, as long as you follow these tips:

1

LET’S TRY OFFLINE DATING

Dating coach Jared Sais (far right) can be found at the site www.nonverbalgame.com. / BESS ADLER, METRO

Grin and bear it: Sais says the first step to flirting with a stranger is to make eye contact and smile. If they’re reading a book or looking at their phone, walk over and say hello.

2

Count: Watch how long the other person holds eye contact: You’re golden if it lasts for two seconds.

3

Approach naturally: “Don’t use lines,” says Sais. Instead, he suggests walking up to your crush and simply saying hello. “If you’re shy, you can use that as your strength,” he says. “‘Hey, I really don’t do this a lot and I’m kind of shy, but I had to approach you and get your number,’ – that’s a natural way for success.” ANDREA D. PARK

One of the first girls I’m instructed to hit on ignores me completely. That’s not true: She glances up, just enough to let out a knowing I’m-being-hit-on chuckle, then returns to her friends.

I go up to a girl sitting with a friend at a bar. We talk about the ginger cocktail she’s nursing. I leave, but later return. We already have a rapport based on the drink. Before she leaves I fumble a last second chat.

Sais and I start talking to two girls and a guy sitting near us. We just chit-chat and we quickly suss out that all three are married, two to each other. No bother: We keep on talking, just for fun.

For most of the night, there’s been a group of girls behind us. They get up to leave, but Sais flags them down. The next thing I know, he’s a few feet away and I’m speaking to three French girls.

This is not the end of the world. I’ve been advised to develop a “f— it” attitude. The same impulse that should get me to approach complete strangers in bars is the same one that has me rebounding when I’ve been unceremoniously shot down. So I walk back to where I was and don’t let it get me down.

Sais preaches the power of “little jabs.” You don’t run up to a potential mark and instantly perish with an unfortunate line. You exchange glances. Then you make initial, friendly contact. Maybe around the third or fourth meeting, you try for something a little more serious — but not that serious. A number works.

This shouldn’t be just about getting numbers. It should be about meeting people, learning about them, sharing a few laughs. It pushes whatever romantic motives you may have to the back of the mind, therefore making it easier to find someone you may actually like. Loosened up, you may actually make a real connection.

Sais often compares humans to animals, and he talks about how hyenas often break up into packs. This makes conversation easier. And it should be about conversation: As I speak, the words are just flowing out of me. I’m not trying to hit on them or even get their numbers, even if that’s in the back of my mind.

they’re not American, or at least not me): “Why didn’t you come over earlier?” she asks. Without getting nervous, I make a lightly

self-deprecating joke about slow Americans. They like this and we continue chatting. Eventually they do leave, as intended, and I

realize too late that I could have gotten their numbers but am OK that I didn’t. And then I realize I have no idea who I am anymore.

Why it’s harder than ever to find satisfaction in marriage

For exclusive commentary, c visit Metro.us/blogs.

The new television series “Satisfaction” on USA is taking a bold stance on marriage, monogamy and infidelity by calling out these critical issues. A successful couple with a teenage daughter has silently entered the doldrums of their marriage. As so often happens, they don’t talk about it. Instead, they each look externally for a sense of satisfaction. The show got me thinking about monogamy and marriage and also raised an important question: What if the having it all outside isn’t enough to feel fulfilled inside?

Dissatisfaction drives satisfaction

things can get dreary. I recently polled just over 1,000 women – more than two-thirds of whom are in long-term relationships – and asked a very straightforward question: What do women want in bed? In analyzing the responses, a whopping 92 percent answered that the most important thing – ranked higher than foreplay and oral sex – is a kiss. Not just any kiss – a real kiss filled with passion. Here, we can see what so many women are missing – passion and desire. They don’t want to leave their marriages, but they aren’t willing to put their wants and needs on hold either.

A recipe for disconnection

In a marriage where a couple is drifting apart, it’s all but preordained that any couple will stray physically and emotionally.

Long-term relationships suffer from one main issue: predictability. Comfort and routine can make people forget why they fell in love. The solution is showing gratitude. The bottom line: No matter how much someone loves you, everyone has a breaking point. And that’s when you’ll find they’ve fallen into the arms of someone else.

It happens silently Over time, life can enter a place of habit for many couples, and that’s when

Stranger in the night Robert Davi can be pretty convincing when he wants to be. So the venerable ’80s action movie mainstay is more than up to the task of explaining why you should make the trip out to Long Island’s Eisenhower Park this Saturday to hear him impersonate Frank Sinatra — as he’s done plenty of times before, to surprisingly large crowds. Take it away, Mr. Davi. He knows you recognize him from somewhere: “They don’t know exactly where. If you’re a Bond fan, it’s ‘License to Kill.’ ‘Goonies,’ ‘Die Hard,’ ‘Showgirls,’ ‘Cops and Robbersons,’ on and on and on, different genre pictures. I also had a TV series, ‘Profiler.’ That was another thing — four and a half years of doing the good-guy thing.” Breaking legs

Ol’ blue eyes Because he’s qualified to take up Sinatra’s tough guy persona: “There was one other singer in history who if he said, ‘I’m going to break your legs,’ you would believe him, and that was Frank Sinatra, who I did a film with [ed. 1977’s “Contract on Cherry Street”]. I think if I say that, people believe that. I love Michael Buble, but if he said, ‘I’m going to break your legs,’ I wouldn’t believe him. I ain’t going to buy it, sorry. He’s wonderful, but I ain’t going to buy that.”

Music. As a singer, Robert Davi isn’t half as bad as the guys he plays in the movies. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick

These concerts are pretty popular: “Last year I had 10,000 people. And the album went to No. 6 on Billboard Jazz, so it did have, you know, awareness.”

He knows the difference between humility and modesty: “I’m not modest at all. Humility is great, that’s something you work at. But modesty, that’s something else. What is it, being modest? I don’t know. With all that white noise out there, how the hell do you break through? That’s why Miley Cyrus does that twerky tongue thing. But I say talent still wins out, and class and elegance. Because it’s not of the moment, it has longevity. I’m not saying it’s the reason why, but when I did my album in 2011 there was a billboard

on Sunset Boulevard for months of me in a suit and tie. Now, what did Jay Z and Justin Timberlake do a year and a half later? Not that I’m I m saying this, but I kind of brought it back. It had a striking image. I’m not saying that I necessarily had that effect, but it’s curious to me.” Despite all the film and TV work, he was always meant to be a singer:

“Had you asked anyone in my family when I was growing up what I was going to do, they would say, ‘He’s going to sing.’ Whether it was the opera or the American songbook or Broadway or something to that effect, I was going to be a singer. It’s kind of a funny term, but I feel like I’ve been let out of prison in a certain way, because you express yourself fully through music. There’s nothing more intimate or higher than that kind of communication on a mass level.”

Ways ‘The Purge: Anarchy’ is smart Satirical thriller. The sequel to last year’s surprise hit didn’t have to try, but it did anyway.

1

It has a real message. The titular event in “The Purge” movies refers to an annual tradition in a near-future America in which all crimes, notably murder, are legal for 12 hours. The idea is that the populace gets the worst instincts out of their system once a year. Sure enough, crime rates have gone down. But this

claim might actually be bull. As suggested in the first and shown in the second, the ones being killed tend to be homeless or underprivileged.

2

It goes deeper. Where “The Purge” took place in suburbia, “Anarchy” heads to the city, where we see how the most vulnerable — i.e., the most poor — struggle through the holiday to survive. Our heroes are a motley crew thrown together by circumstance, forced to work together to survive the streets. They include a waitress (Carmen Ejogo) and her daughter (Zoe Soul), a young couple

••••• (Kiele Sanchez and Zach Gilford) whose car broke down and an armed-to-the-teeth (but not really scary) stranger (Frank Grillo) who

actually intends to use the day to avenge his murdered son. We see more of how the extremely wealthy spend the day, not just hiding behind expensive gates but buying people to kill for fun. The whole cast is new, including a revolutionary (Michael K. Williams) who spreads dissent about the Purge, aiming to take down the right-wing government that implemented it.

3

It’s a decent genre film. “The Purge” was a home invasion picture. This is a survive-the-streets thriller — like “The Warriors,” “Judgment Night” or “After Hours” — and it’s a not

bad one. Our heroes are stuck on streets swarming with homicidal maniacs and gangs of masked monsters, and only one has any skill with a gun. There are booby traps and all different kinds of villains. Although he’s not necessarily the most inventive horror auteur, returning writer-director James DeMonaco is skilled at continually raising the bar.

4

It at least attempts to appease both sides. Shockingly, the first “Purge” went all the way with its critique of blood lust, even denying viewers the chance to see all the baddies gorily vanquished. This one

indulges that desire a little bit more. Grillo’s hopeful-avenger is handy with dispatching baddies, and there’s even a scene where we’re fully nudged to cheer as our heroes turn the tables on a legion of would-be assassins. Ejogo and Soul’s characters are on-hand as the resident killjoy pacifists, forever begging Grillo to not give in to vengeance. But “Anarchy” only sides with that pair to a point, giving into presupposed audience demands at the expense of a more nuanced message. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

In “Wish I Was Here,” Zach Braff ’s daughter (Joey King) has a pink wig. / MERIE WEISMILLER WALLACE, SMPSP

Back in action. Zach Braff ’s latest will make fans and haters different kinds of crazy. It took him 10 years and an overexposed Kickstarter campaign, but Zach Braff finally wrote, directed and starred in a followup to “Garden State.” He again plays a struggling actor looking for happiness, but this time he’s married (to Kate Hudson) and his dad (Mandy Patinkin) is dying.

The downside “Garden State” has legions of ardent fans — but it has as many detractors. The haters berated its mega-quirkiness and over-earnestness, as well as the way Braff, in the lead, ended every sentence with a question mark. (It was profoundly annoying?) Although the movie was genuinely amusing, it was often ruined by bad gags and cloying sentiment.

The same thing happens in “Wish I Was Here.” But this movie also suffers from sophomore syndrome, which often occurs when an artist feels burdened by the work they’re putting out following a hit debut: It’s over-packed yet under-organized; it’s both arrogant and sincere in its ambition. Braff can’t settle on a main storyline, so he fumbles with many, including one about badly home-schooled kids (that he luckily winds up forgetting about). As in “Garden State,” the tone veers drunkenly between gags — some amusing, others chokingly whimsical — and unsightly corniness, marked by Braff’s expected soundtrack of sad-yet-inspiring songs he just can’t wait for you to hear.

The upside The thread detailing Patinkin dying is actually genuinely moving, and not because of the wishy-washy faith talk that finds Braff’s character, a religious skeptic, chatting with rabbis. It’s because of the hard line it takes

••••• on death. Patinkin plays a proud man buried under an endless beard who calmly rattles off withering appraisals of his son’s poor life choices. But as his voice weakens, you sense a man afraid of having lived a poor life himself and hoping only to leave it on a high note. These scenes, usually (but not always) underplayed, stare death in the face; they don’t get tied up in vague religious chatter, they just confront life’s disappointments head-on. It’s too bad the rest of the film doesn’t. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

What: Film and music video director Michel Gondry goes home to France to make this whimsical adaptation of Boris Vian’s whimsical novel about a playboy (Romain Duris) in love with a woman (Audrey Tautou) who is dying because she has a water lily stuck in her lung. The lowdown: Vian’s book — and Gondry’s movie — may start out almost unbearably quirky, and may include things like a bird DJ and a car made of plastic clouds. But things get weirdly serious. The lily in Tautou’s lung is no joke, and the tone goes from freewheeling to not just sad but actively depressing. The loud colors start to drain from the picture, and what seemed a perhaps busy nightmare of pure, manic joy has turned into an actual nightmare. This isn’t shocking. Gondry’s work has always bounced between happiness and despair — not just in the frankly honest “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,â€? but in music videos, where the fantasies onscreen tend to be revealed as tragically impossible or borne out of anxiety and pain. Vian’s novel ďŹ ts him like a glove; no shock that it was a major inspiration on his style when he was young. Sneaky as it is, “Indigoâ€? ultimately reminds you that he’s at his best when collaborating with people — Charlie Kaufman, the inhabitants of Brooklyn in “Dave Chappelle’s Block Partyâ€? — that coax him out of his shell.

Broderick and Parker go to Ireland to argue

The people hounding Taylor Swift in this photo are not the same ones who hounded her at her vacation home.

Thanks to court documents, we can finally put some names and faces to the three Connecticut residents charged with vandalizing Taylor Swift’s Rhode Island vacation home, and the results are kind of brainy. Michael Horrigan, 29, Tristan Kading, 28, and Emily Kading, 26, pleaded not guilty to charges they hurled beer bottles and shouted expletives at security guards monitoring Swift’s property last month, according to TMZ. So what do they do when they’re not drunkenly defacing property? Tristan Kading, for one, studied chemical oceanography at MIT and received the Richard Montgomery Award for Achievement in Mathematics. Younger sister Emily is studying to be a nuclear physicist, and both Tristan and Horrigan were given citations for heroism last year after rescuing a 12-year-old girl

You know what everyone loves on a vacation? “Intense discussions.” Aren’t they the best? And apparently that’s what Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker have been having while visiting Ireland. According to the National Enquirer, Broderick and Parker headed to their usual holiday spot on the Emerald Isle specifically to address their marriage woes and what we’ll charitably refer to as his wandering eye. “They normally venture all around Donegal, but this time they spent the majority of their time locked away in their remote home out in the countryside,” a source says. “One evening they went

into Nancy’s, a seafood restaurant, and hardly said a word to each other.” That sounds so much like the opposite of fun. But hey, at least they’re not stewing silently over dinner at home! There’s that, at least.

Bieber to give another deposition

It’s too bad Justin Bieber had such a terrible time during his last videotaped deposition in connection with his paparazzi assault case, because the Canadian pop star is going to have to do it all over again. A judge has ordered Bieber back for further interrogation due to his refusal to answer questions related to on-again, off-again girlfriend Selena Gomez, according to TMZ. Bieber will be questioned by the same lawyer who riled him so back in March, prompting the repeated response of “Don’t ask me

about her again” when questioned about Gomez. “He will have to answer questions he refused to answer last time,” a source says. And the second goround will be videotaped again, so we have that to look forward to.

Steps to a perfect spray tan

Whether you’re going glam for your big day or a special night out, or just want a glow for the beach, there are spray tan commandments you must follow. Break them and risk streaky hands or a stained once-white dress, warns Ashley Piotrowski, owner of The Bronzed Bee in Philadelphia. Piotrowski’s clients, especially summer brides, come to her for meticulously applied airbrush spray tans, but all of her hard work will — literally — fade away if you don’t stick to these rules. RACHEL VIGODA @rachelatmetro rachel.vigoda@metro.us

Slather on the sunscreen and keep your tans sunless. / WAVEBREAK MEDIA

Follow these tips:

Go for a trial run first

48 hours to perfection

“A bride can come in the night before her wedding and get an airbrush tan thinking it’s going to be one thing — and it comes out another,” Piotrowski says. She recommends spray tan newbies try it out about a month before a big event such as a wedding, bachelorette party or vacation to avoid horrific surprises.

“Come in two days prior to your wedding and no sooner,” Piotrowski cautions. You’ll need to avoid water during the 6 to 8 hours the tan is developing — which means no showering. “The day before is your rehearsal dinner, so you’ll be running around sweating,” she says. “You’re going to want to shower that day.”

Keep it light

Piotrowski says to “ask for a glow”: “If you tell me you want to be super dark, like you just got back from Jamaica, I’ll deliver — but you might not be happy with it.” No matter how dark you go, the color is there for about a week; opting for a Tan Mom look won’t make it last longer.

Amend your mistakes

Powder, powder, powder

Keep a small bottle of touch-up solution at home, such as Sun Labs’ Self Tanning Micro Mist, for when you accidentally wash your hands before the color has set. If you absolutely must clean your hands, Piotrowski recommends using hand sanitizer on just your palms.

“I don’t care if it’s Christmastime, you’re going to be sweating on your wedding day,” Piotrowski says. Sweat can make a tan run or leave a telltale sign on a white dress. Keep moisture at bay, no matter what you’re wearing, with liberal doses of baby powder.

Self-tanners to the rescue If it seems like every sunny day is spent stuck in the office, fake a beach vacay with these trusty at-home tanners. METRO

Fresh, French style Hot Chef. Tribeca’s classy comfort food spot, Washington Market Tavern, opens tonight. If it’s not in season, it’s not on Aksel Theilkuhl’s menu. The 30-year-old executive chef of Washington Market Tavern (41 Murray St., www.washington markettavern.com), which opens tonight, goes by an “extremely seasonal” ethos for his American menu. Shareable plates and updated tavern classics will bear a sophisticated touch — the product of following Laurent Tourondel through the kitchens of BLT as it expanded on the East Coast and Chicago, learning the techniques of French cooking along the way. We chatted with Theilkuhl to find out what he has in store for Tribeca.

technically in culinary school. The chef that worked [at Disney World’s California Grill], he was very market-driven and he kinda started to show me what the importance is of sourcing; that at the end of the day what we do is a craft and an art, but it all starts with the product. So that’s what really started to stem the mentality of, ‘We’re not changing the world, we’re just taking a beautiful product and putting it on display.’ ”

“If we’re gonna poach a carrot, [the staff] spend an entire day just talking about the correct way to do it to get that perfect — we’ve allowed all the sugars to come out so it can be at its optimum flavor. I think that a lot of chefs go wrong sometimes because they tend to overcomplicate their dishes instead of focusing on cooking the product right.”

Themed menus “We’re getting beautiful spring carrots from Blooming Hill Farm. We’re doing an entire dish driven just on carrots, then the carrots are finding their way into a few other dishes — a halibut dish, even to make our stock. We definitely use a product in as many places as we can.”

Hip-hop meets classical music? You know it’s Brooklyn. Alternative rap collective Deltron 3030 — made up of MC Del the Funky Homosapien, producer Dan “the Automator Nakamura and DJ Kid Koala — are bringing their “Event 2 tour to Celebrate Brooklyn! in Prospect Park. Jumping ahead by a decade after their first album, “Event 2 takes place in the year 3040. In their imagined dystopian future, Del’s alter ego, Deltron Zero, battles big business, which has taken over the world. For frontman Del, New York is going to be a special performance. Despite the gentrification

of Brooklyn, which now boasts more hipsters than rappers, he expects that people will embrace the return of Deltron 3030. “I would assume that those who come to the concert, they’re already on our page. If not, they can just zone out on the sci-fi of it. Their afrofuturistic music is the brainchild of Nakamura and Kid Koala, who add the genre-bending effects to their distinct sound. For this tour, Nakamura, a classically trained violinist, assembled the 3030 Orchestra to accompany Del’s rhymes. “It’s a dream that he wanted to realize, said Del. “And I believe he picked the right combination of people. SAMAR KHURSHID

Use the gun laws we have Re: ‘No need to suffer gun violence’ (Metro, July 16) Those people who naively think that gun violence can be legislated out of existence are living in a dream world. There are probably over 30,000 gun laws already on the books that impose restrictions on law-abiding individuals. If someone chooses to disobey the laws, no legislation is going to prevent that. When someone purchases a gun through a licensed dealer, he or she has to pass a background check and that firearm is registered to the buyer. Those who are barred from possessing guns legally will obtain them through other means. They will steal guns, buy them on the street or

devise ways to make their own. Even though there are laws against drunken driving, people still drive drunk. CHUCK FAZIO, VIA EMAIL

The gun lobby that letter writer Carol Sosenko laments is strong because millions of registered voters support OUR rights to keep and bear arms. The preservation of the individual right to keep and bear arms is a bipartisan issue. If you really wish to get rid of guns, then push to amend the Constitution rather than undermine it with dubious local laws pushed by vapid celebrities. J.D. TORDOFF, VIA EMAIL

Pacers guard bolts Brooklyn native Lance Stephenson is ditching the Pacers to sign with Michael Jordan’s Hornets, according to reports. The free agent shooting guard, who went to Lincoln High in Coney Island, signed for three years and $27 million — less in total than he was offered by Indiana.

NFL news

NFL offenses are going to the no-huddle more and more and the Packers want in on the trend. Coach Mike McCarthy said he wants to get off 75 plays per game. Upgrade the whole offense.

If position requirements didn’t exist in fantasy football, we’d gobble up all the quarterbacks we could and laugh all the way to the bank. But they do, and most leagues require we start only one quarterback. Given that they’re the most consistent statistical producers, the most healthy and have the most positional depth in today’s pass-happy NFL, it’s a no-brainer to stock up on running backs and wideouts while waiting on your quarterback. Of course, this only works if the QBs we’re waiting for produce at a top-12 clip. Here are the signal callers the “Wait on QB” purists should be targeting this year.

Cut me, Jay Last season, Bears quarterbacks totaled 4,450 passing yards, 32 touchdowns and 19 interceptions — numbers good enough

for a QB5 fantasy ranking. Credit passing-game savant Marc Trestman, whose scheme was so dominant journeyman Josh McCown became a stud. Now it’s Jay Cutler’s turn to go off, as his superior arm talent is a perfect fit for the basketball-ongrass receiving trio of Brandon Marshall, Alshon

Jeffery and Martellus Bennett. Cutler’s Yahoo! average draft position (ADP) is currently 104.9, the 15th quarterback off the board. It’s robbery.

Iceman cometh Matt Ryan has thrown for at least 4,000 yards and 26 touchdowns in

Dexter Fowler, OF, Astros — He’s just about ready to come off the DL. Fowler is a five-category contributor, something hard to find on the wire.

Jimmy Nelson, SP, Brewers — Don’t give up on one of baseball’s top prospects just because he got shelled in his first MLB start.

three straight seasons, yet he can be had in the seventh round of fantasy drafts. It’s a reminder of the mind-boggling depth at the position. Ryan has a chance at his best year yet, thanks largely to the healthy return of Julio Jones and Roddy White, and a running game that remains inept.

The hottest team in baseball may very well be the Angels at the moment as they have won ďŹ ve straight and nine of their last 10 games.

Following a sluggish start, the Tigers have been playing like the defending AL runner-ups of late as they have opened an 8 1/2game lead on the Royals.

Not only will the Giants be in the running for the NL West crown, but they will also be serious players for the NL wild-card during the second half.

They are tied with the Braves in the NL East, but do they have the experience to stay there when it matters most in September?

Following the injury to slugger Edwin EncarnaciĂłn, Toronto has fallen out of ďŹ rst place in the AL East and trail the Orioles by four games.

Yankees (47-47)

The Athletics left little doubt they are the best team in baseball at the All-Star break, winning seven of their last 10. They had two participants in the Home Run Derby in Yoenis Cespedes (who won for the second-straight year) and Josh Donaldson, who have played major roles in the A’s second highest-scoring oense in the AL. They also have a major league-leading plus-145 run dierential.

Los Angeles’ rotation has paced them all year as Clayton Kershaw’s 11 wins are tied for third in the NL and Josh Beckett’s 2.26 ERA also ranks third.

Starter Adam Wainwright and his league-leading 12 wins and league-low 1.83 ERA has paved the way for him to start for the NL in the All-Star Game.

The Mariners have been led by ace Felix Hernandez and his AL-leading 2.12 ERA, which earned him the starting nod for the AL in Tuesday’s All-Star Game.

Aside from getting tremendous starting pitching, Atlanta’s bullpen has been rock solid, led by Craig Kimbrel and his 29 saves.

New York took a real blow this week when it was learned rookie Masahiro Tanaka has a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow.

Things aren’t going well for the Brewers as they have dropped eight of their last 10 games and lead the NL Central by one.

Baltimore closed out the unoďŹƒcial ďŹ rst half of the season strong to open up a four-game lead in the American League East.

Despite being injured, ace hurler Johnny Cueto is ďŹ fth in the NL in wins with 10 and is second in ERA at 2.13.

Andrew McCutchen had a very productive ďŹ rst half, hitting .324 with 17 home runs and 61 RBIs. The Bucs are 3 1/2 games out.
