Driving records. MBTA raises bar for new drivers The MBTA has raised its standards for new bus and train drivers by implementing revised hiring criteria it describes as the strictest in the nation. “A number of employment candidates who were hired prior to this year would not be eligible under the new criteria,” said MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo. “The new standards are considered by many to be the most stringent among major U.S. transit systems.” Last week, an MBTA driver who was fired for crashing a bus in May while using her cell phone asked that her license be reinstated. An investigation revealed that Shanna Shaw had a history of “unsafe and irresponsible driving behavior” that included violations such as speeding. Under the new criteria, a driving candidate will not be considered if he or she has a driving record containing any of the following: an automobile law violation

The jury weighing obstruction of justice and conspiracy charges against a friend of Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev will resume deliberations today, with a verdict expected this week. Azamat Tazhayakov, a Kazakh exchange student, is the first of three of Tsarnaev’s friends to be charged with interfering in authorities’ investigation into the April 15, 2013, attack that killed three people and injured 264. U.S. District Judge Douglas Woodlock, noting that one of the jurors had complained of illness, dismissed the jury late last week until Monday. The jury began deliberations on Wednesday after six days of testimony. In their closing arguments, the prosecutors and defense attorneys etched conflicting portraits of Tazhayakov. METRO/REUTERS

The photos of Frederique and Robert-Jan van Zijtveld, a brother and sister ages 19 and 18, are shown. The Dutch town of Vleuten, a suburb of Utrecht, is struck with grief because of the death of the two teenagers. “We knew very quickly that something was terribly wrong,”
says manager Mischa Verzuu. “Robert-Jan and Frederique worked here with a very close group of friends. They knew the flight number; they knew their friends were on the plane. As soon as we knew for sure, their friends said they wanted to have a march to remember them.” Frederique and Robert-Jan where on vacation — a special trip they took with their grandparents. Kerry says missile brought from Russia downed jet U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry laid out on Sunday what he called overwhelming evidence of Russian complicity in the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 and called rebels’ behavior “grotesque.” Kerry expressed horror at how pro-Moscow separatists at the crash sites treated the remains of victims, criticized
Russian President Vladimir Putin and threatened “additional steps” against Moscow. British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond echoed the criticism, urging Moscow to ensure international investigators had access to the crash sites. “Russia risks becoming a pariah state if it does not behave properly,” he told Sky television. At the biggest crash site, where emergency workers had bagged dozens of bodies on Saturday, all had been removed on Sunday morning.

Jane Lynch shares what she thinks stinks We met up with Jane Lynch last week, as the actress was using her summer break from “Glee” to promote Febreze. Sure, she shared some anecdotes that she might not have if the company wasn’t paying her, but there was one departure from the script that we thought was funny enough to include here. When we asked her about the worst smell she ever encountered, she ended up dissing big department stores and making fun of the most powerful couple in music: “When you go to Macy’s or Bloomingdale’s and someone is standing there with perfume, and they spray you without you really saying ‘yes.’ You kind of smile at them, and they take that for a ‘yes’ and they spray you with Beyonce’s new scent, which you’re not interested in at all, and then you have it on all day. I’ve had to go home and change my clothes because of that. I had Beyonce all over me! Please don’t write this, because her husband will come after me, or the sister in an elevator.” LASSE E. Gwyneth Paltrow is back on her soapbox (and back on dates) Fear not, parents. Gwyneth Paltrow is back with more excellent lifestyle advice, this time about what you’re feeding your kids. Paltrow took to her Goop soapbox to extoll the virtues of the new book “Cure Your Child with Food,” by Kelly Dorfman, which suggests a lot of recurring ailments could be due to what your kids are eating. For instance, too much dairy is likely the cause of chronic ear infections, and a zinc deficiency can lead to a general
“failure to thrive.” And really, isn’t preventing any failures in the thriving department what Goop is all about? In nonpediatric-nutrition news, Paltrow seems to maybe not be reconciling with husband Chris Martin after all, despite recently being spotted with him “operating like a couple” in the Hamptons. The thing is, she was spotted even more recently on a date with a “hot young guy” at NYC restaurant Narcissa, accord-

Songwriter Linda Perry takes issue with singers such as Beyonce claiming songwriting credits on their hits. “Um, that’s not songwriting,” Perry says during a Reddit session. “Some of these artists believe if it wasn’t for them, your song would never get out there, so they take a cut just because of who they are. But everyone knows the real truth, even Beyonce. She is talented in a completely different way.”
‘Cosby Show’ incest between Theo and Denise? This might not sit well with you, but Malcolm-Jamal Warner has revealed that while making “The Cosby Show,” he had a major crush on on-screen sister, Lisa Bonet. “We were so close in age,” Warner tells Access Hollywood. “But, you know,

Lindsay, don’t call it a comeback! Seriously, don’t.
Lindsay Lohan really has it easy sometimes. No, wait. Hear me out. Lohan’s career as a “celebrated” actress comes from one film, “Mean Girls,” that came out 10 years ago. Since then, the films she’s actually managed to show up for have been disappointments and duds, yet she’s still held onto the promise that “Mean Girls” created. And now she’s been feted at the Ischia Global Film & Music Festival with the Ischia Comeback Award simply for signing up to do David Mamet’s “Speed-thePlow” on the West End. Seems a bit premature, since she’s not even in rehearsals yet, but whatever. She’s back! Again! Come to think of it, every time Lohan has signed up to do anything, it’s considered a comeback.

never want anyone to see it, then you shouldn’t do it in the first place. [Laughs]
Ellie Kemper, of “The Office” and “Bridesmaids” fame, knows how to steer a conversation. When talking about the awkward questions that come up regarding “Sex Tape” — in which she plays the friend of a couple (Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel) who actually make one — things quickly got weird.
You’ve been doing well in comedy. Is there a plan in place for you? When you’re starting out, you think, “I would love a job that pays.” And it seems strange to ever say no to any project that comes up. But the general idea that I have right now is to keep doing projects that involve great people because it’s a proven recipe for success. So if there’s someone you want to work with, it doesn’t totally matter what the content is, because it will always yield a better experience and a better product.
You’re probably fielding a lot of inappropriate questions because of the theme of this movie, huh? It didn’t really occur to me, stupidly, until today: “I guess there are going to be a lot of questions about sex tapes, aren’t there?” They haven’t been too bad. I haven’t made any sex tapes, so I haven’t had to bring any up.
Do you see yourself moving out of comedy? I hope this doesn’t make me shallow, but I don’t have an interest in doing that right now. I love comedy. I have fun doing it, so I don’t feel like I want to be [moving away from it] just yet. But maybe in the second half of my life I will turn all drama, all the time. We’ll see.
That’s convenient. That’s very convenient. I planned that. But it hasn’t been too bad. There’s been some questions about sex tapes in our culture, but I don’t have such great insight into that. This film also speaks to America’s unhealthy gun culture. There have been 74 school shootings since Sandy Hook. I’m not talking about all the other crap that goes on in the streets. There have been 74 school shootings since Sandy Hook. We got a problem. All President Obama was saying is: Get a background check. He’s not trying to take anybody’s guns. He was saying if you’re on record as having mental illness or if you have a violent past, it shouldn’t be that easy to just buy a gun. This film is definitely talking about the level of violence we are obsessed with. It’s funny when people get 12 hours to purge and guns are the first thing they turn to. How far away we are from that in reality is the question. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Omar Little lives! Interview. Michael K. Williams says he really admired his revolutionary in “The Purge: Anarchy.” Michael K. Williams is best known as Omar Little, the charismatic gang-preying hood in “The Wire.” But he’s never been one to be boxed in. In addition to appearances in “RoboCop” and “Kill the Messenger,” the actor has a small but key role in “The Purge: Anarchy,” in which he plays a revolutionary trying to spread awareness of the real meaning of the annual holiday: Most of the people being killed are the poor and downtrodden. This, he says, isn’t far from reality. Your character gets to be the voice of reason. He’s a mixture of Malcolm X, Huey Newton and Tupac Shakur. He’s smart, he’s outspoken, he’s brave, he’s honest. He spoke to me in a lot of ways. I felt like one of the people he was talking to, that he was informing me about what’s really going on in the world. He speaks to the downtrodden, the have-nots, the people who don’t have a voice, who feel like they’ve been forgotten by society. Did the first ‘Purge’ — which is a critique of blood lust in the moneyed suburbs — speak to you as well?
Michael K. Williams’ latest role might not be huge, but his character’s message is pretty timely. / GETTY IMAGES
I loved part one, but there was an elephant in the room that it did not address but that part two does — that all the poor people were the ones being purged. Or if they weren’t being purged, they were being forced to murder just to survive. They don’t have the luxury of state-of-the-art security systems to gate themselves in their mansions.
How do you think this film speaks to low-income urban communities? We’re living in a sort of “Purge,” with ... the economic divide, the haves and have-nots and the middle class being eradicated. People aren’t surviving. ... They can’t feed their families; they’re eating cat food for dinner. It’s like a slow-motion “Purge” happening right now.

Tips for climbing the corporate ladder Career road map. Here’s how young employees can develop gravitas.
There are certain pieces of advice that almost every young entry-level worker gets used to hearing: Look professional at all times, speak confidently, be authoritative. What’s less clear is how a young worker can actually develop these skills. the study, said women face a “no-winâ€? situation when choosing how to represent themselves online. Sexier photos risk alienating other women, but more conservative images could cost them the attention of potential male partners. Her findings were based on two identical Facebook profiles for a fictional young woman, Amanda Johnson. The only difference between them was the profile picture: one showed her in a low-cut red dress, and in the other, Johnson wore jeans
and a short-sleeved shirt. The profiles were evaluated by 58 teen girls and 60 young women between ages 17 and 25 about whether Amanda was attractive, if they could see themselves being friends with her and her competence. In all three categories, the modest profile was rated more favorably, with the largest gap in whether she was perceived as competent — suggesting that sexiness is most detrimental to her perceived professionalism. Daniels encouraged young women to choose social media photos more likely to reveal their identities, such as photos from trips they’ve taken or when they’ve participated in a sport or hobby rather than ones that are primarily just sexy. “Don’t focus so heavily on appearance,â€? Courting their own agendas Re: ‘When you can’t please everyone’ (Metro, July 17-20) Columnist Tom Foreman’s comparison of the Supreme Court to “referees” implies a level of impartiality that the Court often fails to exhibit. Patriots to watch at training camp
SPORTS New great emerges
McIlroy claims Open title
Rory McIlroy held off a charge from Sergio Garcia to win his third major title and first British Open Championship. McIlroy wasn’t as strong as he was in the first three rounds, but a 1-under 71 was enough to finish at 17-unde, two strokes better than Garcia and Rickie Fowler, who entered the day in second. McIlroy has now won every major except the Masters.
NFL. Metro breaks down the players you should be watching when camp opens later this week.
The Patriots kick off the 2014 season in earnest on July 23 when training camp gets underway, with the first practice a day later, in Foxboro. Last season it was all about Tim Tebow’s brief introduction to New England, but the signings this offseason appear to be a bit more practical — and with some staying power. Metro takes a look at five players who will be on everyone’s mind when training camp gets underway. MARK OSBORNE @MetroNYSports
mark.osborne@metro.us
Darrelle Revis Unlike Tebow, Revis is a big-name addition who will be very important to the 2014 season. The cameras will certainly find Revis, the former All Pro for the rival Jets, at the first available opportunity. The questions over his past criticism of head coach Bill Belichick have already been answered in the offseason and hopefully the focus will be on him replacing the departed Aqib Talib in the secondary. Revis appeared to bounce back strong from a torn ACL last season in Tampa Bay, so injuries shouldn’t be a concern. He should be even better, in fact, a full season removed from the major injury. He doesn’t even have to perform as well as his pre-injury level to be a major addition to the Patriots. He
Rob Gronkowski

Remember this guy? Yeah, he still actually plays football. The best tight end in football a few years ago has played in just 18 games in 2012 and 2013. Last year he played just seven games and is still on the mend from the torn ACL he suffered last December, which cut his season short. He’s just seven months removed Watch online

Brandon Browner
GRONKOWSKI HAD 592 YARDS AND FOUR TOUCHDOWNS IN ONLY SEVEN GAMES LAST SEASON.
One of the more intriguing stories in camp will be that of Browner. Fans better get a good look at him in training camp, because you won’t see him in a game until Week 5 against Cincinnati. Browner was suspended four games while a member of Se-

was still good enough to make the Pro Bowl in 2013 with the Buccaneers. Talib, who made the Pro Bowl as well, is now in Denver, and the Jets added Eric Decker and the Bills drafted Sammy Watkins to add to a division that already includes Mike Wallace in Miami.

from knee surgery, so he will be eased into training camp and eventually preseason action. He deferred to the training staff last week on those calls, but said he plans to play Week 1. If that’s the case, he’ll need to at least get a little bit of action in the preseason. A healthy Gronkowski completely transforms this Patriots offense and takes the pressure off the wide receivers who struggled at times in 2013.
Vince Wilfork No piece of the defense was missed more than Wilfork last season. (Inset your “big hole to fill” jokes here.) Wilfork and the Patriots engaged in a little bit of a contract spat in the offseason, with Wilfork even expressing a desire to move on from the only team he’s called home for 10 years. But in the end, he re-signed for three years and $22.5 million, contingent on staying healthy. That will be the big question for Wilfork coming off a season-ending torn Achilles early last season. He’ll also likely feel rookie Dominique Easley breathing down his neck. The supremely talented first-round pick out of Florida plays a lot like young Jets star Sheldon Richardson. He has the versatility to play inside and outside and make the defense more multiple than Wilfork, who is a pure nose tackle.

attle for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He will get a chance to play in preseason games though, so he should develop chemistry with his new teammates. Browner needs to stay out of trouble after Week 5, too. He was suspended for performance-enhancing drugs and has failed three tests for marijuana in his career. The 6-foot-4 corner is talented, and if he stays out of trouble his pairing with Revis should be among the best in the NFL.
Speaking of wide receivers, Dobson sat out all of organized team activities this offseason as he recovered from foot surgery. But he is set to be back on the field for training camp, where he is expected to improve on a solid rookie campaign in 2013. He finished with 37 catches, 519 yards and four touchdowns in just 12 games due to that foot injury. The Patriots were expected to upgrade the receiving corps in the offseason, but only did so slightly. They brought back slot receiver Julian Edelman and signed free agent Brandon LaFell, but Dobson — and fellow second-year receiver Kenbrell Thompkins — will still be critical pieces to an offense which was 13th in the league in receiving touchdowns (25) despite an elite quarterback. Dobson is expected to be the deep threat to complement red-zone threats Thompkins and LaFell. The team hasn’t really had a true burner at receiver since Randy Moss left a few years ago (and you could question how much speed he had left at that point in his career).

Any deal for Hamels would require the Red Sox to part with a host of top prospects, however. The Sox have a deep farm system, but re-signing Lester would cost them only money. The Phillies are 11 games under .500, and a deal of Hamels would mean they’re blowing up the core that earned them that championship in 2008. Second baseman Chase Utley could follow Hamels, as well as fellow lefty Cliff Lee. Boston, now six games under .500, still has seven games left with AL East rival Toronto and three with Tampa Bay before having to decide whether they want to make any moves — coming or going — at the trade deadline. Hamels, due to his extremely high salary, could also clear waivers and be traded after Aug. 1.

The lefty improved to 10-7 on the season, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out eight. Lester is 4-0 and has a 0.85 ERA over his last seven starts. He is now riding a 14-inning scoreless streak. The Red Sox swept the Royals, who are now under .500 after entering the All-Star break at two games above the mark. Boston, meanwhile,

Brock Holt continues to impress on oense. The third baseman was 2-for-5 on Sunday to raise his average to .370 on the season.
