Three officers hurt in Village shootout West Village. Two U.S. Marshalls and an NYPD detective were wounded trying to arrest a suspected sex offender, who was killed in the battle. A suspected sex offender died during a shootout inside a West Village smoke shop that left two U.S. Marshals and an NYPD detective wounded on Monday, officials said. Charles Mozdir, 32, an accused child molester whose story appeared on CNN’s “The Hunt with John Walsh” last week, was killed after opening fire at the law enforcement officers when they tried to apprehend him at Smoking Culture, a West 4th Street head shop, shortly after 1 p.m., police said. A former wedding photographer, Mozdir had been on the run since being arrested in California for sexually abusing a 7-yearold boy in June 2012, CNN reported. After skipping an arraignment at a San Diego Court, the last sign of Mozdir was in Georgia, when a bloodhound picked up his scent near U.S. Highway 17. More than two years later, authorities received a tip Mozdir was working at the smoke shop. Working with a federal Fugitive Task Force, a 45-year-old NYPD detective entered Smoking Culture and identified Mozdir, though police said he had changed his appearance.

A $1 million warrant was issued for Mozdir’s arrest and authorities in California had warned he owned a gun.

“The detective, accompanied by United States Marshals, entered the shop to make an apprehension,” Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said. “Immediately upon entering, a gun battle ensued.” The detective, who had more than 20 years on the job and was recently promoted, was hit twice in the stomach, police said. Bratton said the bulletproof vest the detective wore may have saved his life. Two marshals were also wounded. All three men were recovering at Bellevue Hospital. Mozdir was pronounced dead at the same hospital. His .32-caliber revolver was recovered at the scene and 20 spare rounds of ammunition were found in his pocket, Bratton said. Mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters on Monday that the costumed characters who flock to Times Square and trade photos with tourists for tips have gone “too far.” “I don’t know whether to call it an industry or what you call it, but it needs to be regulated,” de Blasio said, adding that he would look to City Council to act on proposed legislation. Referred to as an “Elmo craze,” the mayor said it was inappropriate for anybody to harass tourists and demand money. Man dies trapped in elevator shaft A man in his 20s died after being trapped in an elevator shaft of a Bronx building early Monday, police said. Around 3:55 a.m., officers responded to a 911 call of a man trapped at a public housing development in Longwood, police said. The man, who has not yet been identified, was discovered in the John Adams Houses unconscious and stuck between an elevator shaft wall and elevator car between the 18th and 19th floors, police said. Emergency workers pulled the man from the shaft but he was pronounced dead at the scene. ANNA SANDERS

Max Roberts has never ridden the city’s subway — but he’s thought about the system’s twists and turns more than most riders. A psychology lecturer at the University of Essex in England, Roberts, 47, has designed 150 mass transit guides, including two rethinking the city’s subway map. One of the maps, completed by Roberts last month, is a friendlier take on the contentious 1972 map by Massimo Vignelli, who died this May. Another presents the transit system’s colorful lines as concentric circles. He spoke to Metro about how different riders interpret maps and what he likes about the MTA’s current subway map. Why are you interested in map design? Roberts: My speciality in psychology, I’m interested in intelligence testing, so how different people can cope with all the different information in all the world. … In parallel, I’ve always had an interest in maps. Your NYC subway maps are diagram maps — what are those trying to accomplish? It’s trying to take a complex world and turn it into simple straight lines. But a lot of diagram maps take a complex world and they turn it into zigzags instead.

A lot of New Yorkers disliked the 1972 subway map by Vignelli — which smoothed out routes into 45- or 90-degree angles — and it lasted only seven years. What do you think? The original Vignelli from ’72 is a beautiful, organized design that’s let down by a disorganized color scheme. There were a few geographical glitches on it, which upset a few

people. The overall geographical shape’s failings have been exaggerated. What changes did you make to his map? I’ve worked into the Vignelli style map with experimental angles that I thought would suit New York better, just trying to get it into a better shape to make it less geographically upsetting to people who’ve got a certain tolerance of this. How can you tell who will tolerate diagram maps? There’s something I like to call the 4/5/6 test. The Lexington Avenue lines, when

they go through Grand Central Station, they actually flip from Lexington Avenue to Park Avenue. Vignelli shows that on all his maps as a straight line, and that really upsets some people. People who have a very low tolerance for geographical distortion hate that — they want to see the line zigzag there. What do you think of current design? The more I look at that map, the less I like it. … They’ve made Manhattan so fat that it looks as though it’s worth getting the subway from 14th Street Union Square to where the L meets the blue lines. It’s not a good map for helping you decide whether to take a journey or not. Have you ever ridden the New York City subway? I’ve never been to New York. Why were you interested in mapping the subway? It’s one of the great systems. If you design maps, you can’t ignore the New York subway map. You’ve got to use it and try to understand it. ANNA SANDERS @AnnaESanders anna.sanders@metro.us

Time travel at the speed of a 1935 Speedster? The 1930s brought unprecedented innovation in machine-age technology and materials. Industrial designers from the auto industry translated the principles of aerodynamics and streamlining into everyday objects like radios and toasters. Transit. MTA releases $14.5 billion budget The Metropolitan Transportation Authority still expects to increase fares for bus, subway and rail services in 2015 and 2017, the agency said in its proposed 2015 budget, which was released on Monday. The MTA said the 4 percent increases, announced in December, will remain steady even as the MTA deals with increasing costs. In total, the MTA projects a $14.5 billion budget from tolls, fares and taxes. That money will in turn largely be spent on infrastructure and on settlements with unions. Customers can expect increased bus and subway services, which will cost $10.1 million. For one, 14,000 weekend riders can expect an extended J train service to Broad Street stop by summer 2015. A total of $363 million will be spent on upgrades, repairs and training. Part of that training includes possible pilot programs for new technology

White House: US, Europe to issue new sanctions on Russia Washington, D.C. President Obama on Monday held a rare conference call with leaders from four other nations. President Barack Obama and European leaders, in a show of solidarity, agreed on Monday to impose a wider set of sanctions against Russia’s financial, defense and energy sectors in the wake of a plane being shot down over Eastern Ukraine, a top Obama aide said. Fist bumps relay 90 percent less germs than handshakes Ditching handshakes in favor of more informal fist bumps could help cut down on the spread of bacteria and illnesses, according to a study released on Monday. The study in the American Journal of Infection Control found that fist bumps, where two people briefly press the top of their fists together, transferred about 90 percent less bacteria than handshakes. “People rarely think about the health implications of shaking hands,” Dave Whitworth, a biologist at Aberystwyth University in the United Kingdom who coauthored the study, said in a statement. Funding. Compromise deal to ease veterans’ medical waiting times Leaders of the Veterans Affairs committees in Congress said on Monday they had struck a rare compromise deal on legislation that provides about $17 billion in funding to ease long waiting times for VA medical centers. Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent, and Rep. Jeff Miller, a Republican, said the figure marks about the halfway point between the competing proposals they announced last week. The compromise measure aims to clear months-long waiting lists at VA hospitals and clinics across the country. The agency has been rocked by scandal over cover-ups of these waiting times, prompting the resignation of VA Secretary Eric Shinseki in late May. Cutting losses limits your risk

The threat of large losses is the No. 1 reason people are intimidated by investing in the stock market. Take that possibility out of the equation by admitting to yourself that you could be wrong about any stock in which you invest. It’s perfectly ďŹ ne to be wrong about the market, but it’s

So that was the reason Selena Gomez liked Justin Bieber all along?

CULTURE Celebs in court

Madonna braces for a Hard trial Remember that pesky Hard Candy lawsuit that Madonna tried to get thrown out completely? Well, not only is it going forward, but it looks like Madge herself may be forced to testify. The whole mess boils down to Madonna’s decision to start a fitness apparel and DVD line called Hard Candy, named after her 2008 album and subsequent world tour. Except there’s already a beauty company called Hard Candy, and it claims Madonna’s company has been infringing on its copyright. Did Madonna not know about it before? We’ll see. This could get ugly.

Justin Bieber is apparently none too thrilled that on-again, off-again girlfriend Selena Gomez appears to be total BFFs with model Cara Delevingne, according to the Sun. “Justin has called Cara on more than one occasion, wanting to know what’s going on. It’s been clear that

he’s had a drink beforehand, too.” I can understand Bieber’s concern. Delevingne, you see, was most recently dating actress Michelle Rodriguez, and while the same source accusing Bieber of drunken, paranoid phone calls claims the relationship between Delevingne and Gomez is clearly platonic, Gomez did date Bieber for a long time. And anyone who’s seen the website Lesbians Who Look Like Justin Bieber knows where I’m going with this.

Jay Z says Kimye is ‘bad for business’

New details are leaking out as to why Jay Z and Beyonce sat out pal Kanye West’s recent wedding: Apparently they were too good for it. “Beyonce wasn’t going to allow [Kim Kardashian, West’s new bride] to socially climb her. They are guarding like hell their status,” a source tells Page Six. “Jay didn’t want Kanye with [the bride]. He thinks it’s bad for business. I think Jay lost a little respect for Kanye there.” Advantage: Jay and Beyonce.

Back in 2012, Beyonce, Jay Z and Kanye West were inseparable.

Sandra Bullock toasted her 50th birthday this weekend with a lavish trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, with Chelsea Handler and a group of other female friends, according to E! News. according to Radar Online. “The wedding will be next July. They want to focus on their daughter first and having it next summer seems logical,” a source says. “They won’t have a big production, but it will be elaborate. The wedding party will consist of the cast of ‘That ’70s Show,’ as they are all very close. They still hang out with the original cast all the time. Most likely Danny Masterson will be the best man, because him and Ashton are like brothers.”

David Shapiro has been there, done that and wrote the semi-autographical book about it. “In terms of how true the book is, it’s a really blown-up, exaggerated version of myself,” Shapiro says. In the book, the narrator — David S. — is an insecure post-grad who becomes Internet-famous by starting a Tumblr reviewing the reviews of an indie music website. In real life,

the same thing happened to Shapiro when he started his Tumblr, Pitchfork Reviews Reviews. “I wish I didn’t see the world like the narrator does, but I know that way of seeing the world will always be a part of me,” he tries to explain, adding that the parts of the book that are fictional mostly relate to the friends and timeline. When talking with Shapiro, he does seem a lot like David S. He hasn’t figured out how to stop caring about his online presence (“It feels like a rat race in a way. ... I would like to get out of it.”), and he doesn’t exactly exude

What made you want to try out for “Face O â€?? When the first season of the show was casting, my boss and mentor Michael Burnett told me I should give it a shot. At the time I was still relatively new to special effects makeup, so I thought I had no chance. I went anyway and managed to get a call back. I watched the first season and felt that I would be overwhelmed if I had made it, so I didn’t try for Season 2. Then I found out one of my close friends [Nick “Nixâ€? Imelda May is one of the biggest stars in Ireland right now, and it’s thanks to original American rockabilly rebels such as Johnny Burnette and Wanda Jackson who inspired the Dubliner’s career. However, as the singer’s upcoming fall release “Tribal” proves, her musical wanderlust includes more than rockabilly; it encompasses blues and jazz, too. “I love the rockabilly world. It’s the original punk rock,” May says. “But it’s not natural for me to put myself in one area. There’s loads of other music I don’t want to ignore.” “Tribal” debuted at No. 1 in Ireland and No. 3 in the U.K., but the record won’t be released in the States until September. May and her band, which includes her guitarist husband, Darrel Higham, added American dates to their summer touring agenda and will

follow with more in the fall. We caught up with May during the European jaunt as the band’s tour bus wound its way through the Pyrenees. “We’re about four hours’ driving from Barcelona and just about at the border of France,” May says after glancing out the bus window. “There’s snow on the mountains, and it’s so beautiful.” Call it a perk of the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, which May says is all she’s ever known: “I started in pubs and clubs when I was 16, and I turned 40 [July 10],” she says. “So, I’ve been gigging for 24 years nonstop. It’s fun; I don’t know what else I’d do.” Another perk is meeting musical heroes: Imelda May has shared stages with Chuck Berry, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, Van Morrison, Jeff Beck, Jamie Cullum and one extra-special star, Wanda Jackson, the original rockabilly queen. “I get to meet great people and create great stories along the way. I’m a big believer in working hard, manners, talent and a little bit of luck,” May says. “I’m very lucky in [terms of] the people I work with and the people I get to meet.”

During the summer, it seems harder than usual to keep the apartment clean and the kids entertained at the same time. Shortcuts that make those tasks easier can be life-changing. So we talked to mom and self-described clean freak Debra Johnson, an expert for the cleaning service Merry Maids, for tips on being the best parent ever without living in squalor. EMILY LAURENCE

Beach days with the kids are the best, but it also means you’ll be ďŹ nding sand everywhere for weeks afterward. “Have kids do a little dance on the door mat with bare feet before coming inside,â€? Johnson recommends. “Four or ďŹ ve steps on the mat will transfer the sandy soil from their feet onto the mat instead of from their feet onto your oor.â€?

The glitter aftermath of a rainy day craft cleanup can be a nightmare. “Make DIY lint rollers with the kids so they can own the cleanup responsibility,â€? she advises. “Help them create a loop of tape that ďŹ ts loosely around their ďŹ ngers or hands so they can tap the sparkly surfaces and capture any glitter that got left behind.â€?

After a day at the pool, kids are bound to get their little wet footprints all over the oor and leave soggy towels and toys wherever they feel like it. To prevent slippery falls, Johnson recommends setting up a towel tree in the bathroom where kids can hang swimsuits and towels to dry completely. Not only does it keep everyone safe, it keeps the apartment clean, too.

Ice pops are the essential summer snack, but it’s virtually impossible for a kid to eat one without it getting all over his or her face and dripping everywhere. “The best remedy for removing an ice-pop stain from upholstery or carpeting is to dampen the stained area with [a] dish-washing liquid solution, Johnson says. “Then, place a white terry-cloth towel over the solution and run over the towel with a hot iron. This will help transfer much of the stain to the towel.

Winning the sticky battle

Between juice boxes, melting sugary snacks and who knows what else, summer is a sticky mess. To keep your counters clean, Johnson says to make it a team eort with your kids. “Teach them to wipe up spills as soon as they happen. Work together by having one person rub the juice stain with an ice cube while the other pats the area dry,â€? she says.

Discovering the city’s best family activities There are so many fun and #FabULyss ways to see NYC as a family. Here are my picks for the best spots where your kids can take in the city’s rich culture.

DivaLyssciously Yours

Sailing away

Lyss Stern is a parenting expert and CEO of Divalysscious Moms, a marketing company catering to New York’s most inuential and trend-setting moms.

Have you heard about Manhattan By Sail? You can experience sailing at sunset and seeing NYC’s skyline with the family. You will love seeing Ellis Island, the Freedom Tower, Statue of Liberty and much more while sailing around Manhattan.

LYSS STERN DivaMoms.com @divamoms

If you’re in Coney Island, don’t forget to check out Luna Park — there are lots of fun rides for all ages. You can explore the boardwalk before or after, and of course stop by Nathan’s for a famous hot dog.

Art for everyone The “Je Koons: A Retrospectiveâ€? show at the Whitney is a must. This family-friendly exhibition features a giant sculpture of a balloon dog, a larger-thanlife sculpture of Play-Doh and much more.

Park and ride My boys love visiting Victorian Gardens at Wollman Rink. They cannot get enough of the rides and games. Conveniently located in Central Park, this is one stop that you will want to take your kids to before the summer is over.

Did you know “gelato is the Italian word for ice cream? One of my favorite gelato stores is Grom. We love a DeLysscious treat on these hot summer days.

Re: ‘Immigrate as in times past’ (Metro, July 28) I beg to differ with the writer of the letter to the editor on the issue of immigration, as if it began during the time of Ellis Island. The first law dealing with immigration was the Alien Naturalization Act of 1790, which states, “Any nonindentured white person can become a citizen if they stayed in this country for a year.” After the Civil War and the building of the transcontinental railroad, there was an influx of Asians, especially Chinese, who were brought over to work on the railroad. There were the Chinese Exclusion Acts of the 1880s, which meant to

stop all immigration of Asians and the Chinese into the U.S. This act was repealed by the Magnuson Act of 1943. Then there was the Immigration Restriction Act of 1921 and the Emergency Quota Act of 1924, which sought to reduce present immigrant communities first to 3 percent of the existing population and then to 2 percent of the existing population. These laws were to restrict the immigration of Southern and Eastern Europeans and Jews while prohibiting immigration of Arabs, Eastern Asians and Indians. KRISTIANNA THOMAS, VIA EMAIL

Shooting 70 QB coach Danny Langsdorf raised eyebrows Monday when he said he’d like to see Eli Manning complete 70 percent of passes. His career high is 62.9 percent. •

While head coach Tom Coughlin wants his team to think every starting position is up for grabs, the reality is most are already etched in stone. One group still very much a mystery, however, is the tight end position. Little-known Larry Donnell of Grambling State currently has the inside track, as the second-year player has received the bulk of the first-team reps. Right behind him on the depth chart is the well-traveled Daniel Fells, a first-year Giant who has been getting the majority of goal-line looks along with fellow nomad Kellen Davis whenever the Giants run their “heavy offensive sets. Adrien Robinson, the man general manager Jerry Reese dubbed “the [Jason Pierre-Paul] of tight ends following the 2012 draft due to his freakish athleticism, has been in tight end purgatory. “I think, right now,

In order to become that allaround tight end — and start — they need to continue to develop. Robinson doesn’t lack confidence, despite sitting fifth on the depth chart. “Time will tell, but there’s a reason I’m still around, said Robinson. “People always wonder why I’ve stayed around [and] the reason is they want to keep me around. TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us

Jets general manager John Idzik says who starts at quarterback between Geno Smith and Michael Vick will be a “Jets decisionâ€? that will include the coaches and management. Metro posed a dierent solution: Let a computer do it. According to PredictionMachine.com, the decision between Smith and Vick is a nobrainer. Through 50,000 simulations of the Jets’ season for each quarterback, the website saw a clear trend: Start Vick. With Smith as the starter, Prediction Machine has the Jets going 6-10 with a 10 percent chance at the playos. Vick gives the Jets a 7-9 record and a 20 percent chance at the playos. “The fact that the Jets would be favored in only two games with Geno Smith as the QB and ďŹ ve games with Michael Vick starting is a signiďŹ cant dierence,â€?
