Ran Duan was recently named Boston’s “Most Imaginative Bartender.” But the 27-year-old isn’t celebrating just yet. He knows there’s still a long way to go before he gets what he’s after: the title of “World’s Most Imaginative Bartender.” “This is only the first step,” he said. “I’m not there yet.” Duan, who’s been tending bar at his family’s Sichuan Garden restaurant in Woburn for years, recently won the regional final in Boston hosted by

the United States Bartenders’ Guild and sponsored by Bombay Sapphire gin. Next month, he’ll travel to Las Vegas and represent Boston in a competition among the country’s top mixologists all vying for the title “Nation’s Most Imaginative Bartender” and the chance to represent America in the global competition. Duan calls the drink that sent him to the national competition “The Forbidden Fruit.” It’s something he worked on for the competition and put on his restaurant’s cocktail menu for a month. It quickly became a favorite among patrons. But the cocktail isn’t the only thing that got him to the national level. Competitors are also judged on technical aspects including presentation of bottles, handling of ice and bar tools and overall efficiency.

Visit Metro.us for Duan’s winning cocktail recipe, “The Forbidden Fruit.” Quoted

“It needs to be the most flawless performance, and it’s mind-wrecking.” Ran Duan bartender at The Baldwin Bar at Sichuan Garden

Duan is continuing to tweak his speech, perfect his pouring and practice his technique. He commits up to three hours every other day to his training. That hunger is what makes not only a good but an imaginative bartender, said Troy Clarke, the president of the Boston chapter of the bartenders’ guild. “[Duan]’s really pushing and learning from every competition he goes into and continuing to improve himself,” Clarke said. “He really wants to win and showcase the talent that we have in Boston and let people know we are here and that we have a phenomenal cocktail scene.” MICHAEL NAUGHTON @MetroBosMike

Revere. Woman pleads not guilty to stealing firefighter’s wallet A Chelsea woman pleaded not guilty to allegedly stealing a Revere fireman’s wallet while he was out on a call. Aleesha McEachern, 32, was arraigned Monday on charges including larceny. She was already in custody on an unrelated robbery case, ac-

cording to the Suffolk district attorney’s office. Late last month, authorities released surveillance images of the woman they suspected of stealing the firefighter’s wallet. The city’s fire chief had said the firefighter left his wallet out to dry after returning from

battling a fire on July 7. He was out on another call when the woman entered the Central Fire Station on Broadway with two children and allegedly took the wallet while other firefighters were still upstairs after the earlier fire. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

A Boston man was arrested Sunday after allegedly breaking into a Best Buy Express kiosk, similar to a vending machine, at the Downtown Crossing station. Nathan Estey, 19, faces charges of breaking and entering and receiving stolen property for allegedly stealing several items from the kiosk around 8 a.m. A review of video surveillance cameras provided police with a suspect description, which came in handy around 6 p.m. Sunday, when an officer saw Estey fiddling with an iPod Touch package in the South Station food court. Estey, who allegedly possessed several of the missing items, was due in court on Monday. METRO

Man arrested in case of found human remains Duxbury. The district attorney said the remains were of a Guatemalan man set to leave the U.S. A Guatemalan man was arraigned in a Brockton court on Monday for allegedly misleading authorities investigating human remains found in Duxbury last week. Jose Milthon Freddy Azurdia-Montenegro, 55, was recently charged with misleading a police investigation, the Plymouth district attorney’s office said on Monday. He pleaded not guilty and was ordered held on $10,000 bail and to surrender his passport. The remains were found in a box on Alexander Way July 27. The box was partially opened and authorities said a strong odor was coming from within. After police examined

Azurdia-Montenegro MARC VASCONCELLOS, THE ENTERPRISE

the remains, they were taken to the medical examiner’s office for identification. Also on Monday, the district attorney’s office released the identity of the person killed. The remains are thought to be that of Estuardo Leonel Melgar Perez, 44, of Guatemala. The remains were identified via fingerprint analysis by the Department of Homeland Security.

The cause and manner of death are still being determined, but authorities said an autopsy revealed a 14-inch incision on Melgar Perez’s abdomen. Authorities also said that Melgar Perez entered the U.S. on July 25 through JFK International Airport on a flight from Honduras. Both men were scheduled to leave the country on Aug. 2 on a flight back to Honduras through JFK International Airport. A message left for AzurdiaMontenegro’s lawyer was not returned by press time. His lawyer said, according to The Enterprise, that Azurdia-Montenegro was involved in buying cars and sending them to Guatemala and knew nothing about the body. Authorities are still investigating. Man quarantined in NYC awaits Ebola test results A man was kept in isolation on Monday while doctors tested him for a possible Ebola infection. On Monday afternoon, officials at Manhattan’s Mount Sinai Hospital confirmed that an unidentified man who recently traveled to West Africa was put in quarantine for testing after he showed symptoms thought to be consistent with the Ebola virus. “After consultation with CDC and Mount Sinai, the Health Department has concluded that the patient is unlikely to have Ebola. Specimens are being tested for common causes of illness and to definitively exclude Ebola,” officials with the city agency said late Monday. CHESTER JESUS SORIA, METRO

James Brady. Reagan’s press secretary wounded in 1981 shooting dies at 73 James Brady, who became a leading proponent of gun limits after he was grievously wounded in a 1981 assassination attempt on his then-boss, President Ronald Reagan, has died. He was 73. Brady, who used a wheelchair since the shooting, died from multiple health complications, according to Jennifer Fuson, a spokeswoman at the Washington-based Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. Brady became White House press secretary when Reagan took office in January 1981. Just two months later, on March 30, Reagan, Brady and two law-enforcement officers were struck by bullets fired by John Hinckley in an assassination attempt outside a Washington hotel. Though Brady never returned to work as press secretary, the Reagan administration maintained his title for the rest of its almost eight years in office. BLOOMBERG

Ways to make millions when you’re young

I became a millionaire before my 22nd birthday. Most people think it takes decades to achieve this kind of success, but they’re wrong. Here are three tips to becoming a millionaire when you’re young:

Deprioritize traditional schooling I know, I know, everyone loves the slogan “stay in school” because school teaches you so much and a degree leads to financial security over time in the form of steady employment. But if you want to make millions when you’re young, you have to disregard such nonsense as years of student loans and then a possible middle class-paying 9-to-5 job that won’t make you rich anytime soon. I’m not saying to quit school entirely, just deprioritize it and spend more time on activities that CAN make you rich and successful at a young age.

Be passionate and practice, practice, practice The world is a fast-changing place, but one constant remains:

Painful Varicose Veins?

For exclusive commentary, visit Metro.us/blogs. There’s huge value in being a true expert at something. To do that, you will need to work harder than you ever thought possible to refine your skills — so you’d better enjoy your chosen profession, because it’s your life. I made $100,000-plus in my senior year of high school and then $700,000-plus during my freshman year of college by trading penny stocks, my chosen passion, and that planted the seeds for my consistent seven-figureper-year earnings these days.

Know the odds and opportunity Understand that your loved ones prioritize schooling, since it’s a tried-and-true method of getting a good job while the odds of becoming rich when you’re young are very small. But don’t overestimate security and underestimate your potential. As Eminem says, “As we move to a new world order, a normal life is boring.” And even if you don’t succeed at getting rich when you’re young, by honing your passion and becoming an expert at your chosen profession you will likely reap the rewards later in life.

Lisa’s family history is far from squeaky clean. Her father was an impoverished noble and always avoiding bill collectors. Because he couldn’t afford a dowry to marry off all his daughters, Lisa’s younger sisters were placed in a convent. “One night, some young men climbed the walls and an observer saw them and the sisters engaged in ‘obscenities,’” Hales says. “The young men had to go to trial. And I bet there was hell to pay for the girls in the convent!”

She’s one of the most famous — and famously mocked — women in history. The notorious painting by Leonardo da Vinci has been co-opted to show Mona Lisa doing everything from smoking a cigar or drinking a beer to taking a selfie. And even while the painting is adored by the 9 million who flock to the Lou-

Dianne Hales is attempting to change all of that with her new book, “Mona Lisa: A Life Discovered.” Here, the author shares some of the juiciest bits about history’s greatest enigma.

Da Vinci was obsessed with his painting of her

She was the subject of the first tabloid story

Although the painting is worth at least $100 million today, da Vinci was never paid for it, mostly because he never seemed completely finished with it. “He kept the painting with him for the rest of his life,” says Hales. “I think there was something in her face or her presence that intrigued him. ... He kept coming back to this portrait and adding things to it. ... I have a feeling that Lisa had a particular hold on his imagination.”

After da Vinci died, the king of France bought the painting; it later hung in King Louis XIV’s bedroom and then Napoleon’s after that. “It went through periods of obscurity, but then in the 19th century, the Romantics discovered it,” explains Hales. In 1911, the painting was stolen. This was at a time when the tabloids had just been invented, and the news was sensationalized and written about all over the world.

‘Big Bang’ cast get big bang contracts “The Big Bang Theory” stars Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco have reached agreements in their contract renegotiations with Warner Bros. TV for the hit CBS sitcom, putting production for the new season back on track, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Sources say the stars sought salary increases from $325,000 per episode to $1 million per episode, which would make them the highest-paid actors on TV. Co-stars Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar are still negotiating.

Is there anything left to tell, LiLo? Lindsay Lohan “held meetings at major publishing houses in London recently” to discuss a salacious tell-all book, according to the Sun. “The stories she promised the literary agents made their jaws drop. She’s prepared to put everything out there and has already proved she’s not shy with the list of men she claims to have slept with,” a source teases. But here’s the thing: How can she be prepared to put everything out there when she’s already, you know, put everything out there? Lohan is not exactly an enigma wrapped in a mystery wrapped in a Passages Malibu sweatshirt. She has lofty goals as far as ghost writers go: “It may seem unlikely, but she thinks she’s in with a shot at getting [‘50 Shades of Grey’ author] E.L. James to work on it,” the source says.

Jay and Bey: On the Run from each other? More rumors of marital trouble for Jay Z and Beyonce are swirling, this time with sources suggesting the couple’s union might not last as long as their current concert tour. “I’m definitely not sure that they’ll make it to Paris,” a source tells Page Six, referring to the On the Run tour’s planned finale in September. “They’re not

just staying in different hotel rooms, but they have booked separate hotels and they arrive separately to each show.” The couple reportedly held an emergency meeting last week with concert promoter Live Nation and at least four lawyers to figure out how to keep the tour on track despite their imploding marriage.

The attractions of Ontario’s capital city run the gamut from small, must-see art galleries to breathtaking iconic landmarks. Sample a little bit of each and see what makes the Great White North so great.

Queen Street West

The CN Tower: Yes, this purposeful landmark is a tourist trap, but that doesn’t mean it’s not cool. If looking 1,815 feet down on the city from behind glass isn’t enough for you, you can pay $175 to strap onto the exterior of the tower. Right below is the astounding Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada, open until 11 p.m. nightly, so you don’t have to hang with fieldtripping kids.

During the day, Queen Street West offers a shopping experience for thrift store scavengers, record store fiends and high-end fashionistas alike, but at night the area turns up. The best music clubs offer decidedly different fare from one another: The Horseshoe Tavern, an 87-capacity honky-tonk/rock club is best known for a surprise Stones gig in the ’90s; Cameron House is good for free folkier fare, while The Rex Hotel Jazz & Blues Bar offers exactly what its name promises. Conversely — and fortunately — Bovine Sex Club doesn’t offer what its name promises: It’s harderedged bands.

The area known as Little Portugal is home to many small art galleries. Though most have a DIY feel, the works within are often so exquisite you’ll be shocked they’re not behind a velvet rope. Dundas Street West is teeming with so many galleries that you may feel like you need a guide to show you what’s what. That’s where Betty Ann Jordan of Art InSight comes in (www.artinsite .net). Jordan brings an insider’s eye and an unparalleled excitement to the proceedings. If you notice a lot of graffiti on the buildings of Toronto

and want to learn more about it, there’s an informative Walking Graffiti Tour led by the Tour Guys (www.tourguys.ca). No trip to the area would be complete without a visit to The Monkey’s Paw (www.monkeys paw.com), a bookstore specializing in obscure works that are perfect for quirky gifts. The Paw also features a one-of-a-kind machine that you put a dollar into and get a random book, which you’re encouraged to review for the store’s blog. PAT HEALY @metrousmusic pat.healy@metro.us

Palestinians not so innocent

Hamas diverted all the donated money, including aid from the U.S. from civilian to military purposes. Hamas is not content to use the homes and hospitals of their people as missile storage and launch facilities; they use UNRWA schools. The people of Gaza support Hamas. It is their elected government. They have earned the same fate as the citizens of Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The U.S. should cut off UNRWA and demand the return of the stolen monies.

Re: ‘Stop the bombs’ (Metro, Aug. 4) Letter writer Christel Jorgenson is at best uninformed. Hamas continues to act to achieve its ultimate goal in accordance with their religious tenets: destruction of the State of Israel and the death of every Jew. After the 2012 Operation Cast Lead, again provoked by the incessant unprovoked, indiscriminate shelling of Israeli civilians by Hamas and other factions in Gaza, millions of dollars for reconstruction went to Gaza.

idea that Hamas is using the school yards and roofs of the kindergartens to fire rockets to Israel, and that Hamas is using regular homes to stock the missiles! During World War II, the Allies’ air force bombed Germany’s cities, killing hundreds of thousands of civilians. And nobody protested, because those civilians celebrated in the streets, when FAU-1 and FAU-2 dropped on England’s cities. Only animals from Hamas put toys, filled by explosives, on the streets, leaving Israel’s kids without arms, hands and legs.

A glance at which Patriots players are performing well and which players are struggling at training camp.

Tom Brady looked phenomenal at the Patriots’ joint practice session with the Redskins on Monday in Virginia, reportedly shredding the Washington defense through the air. File under: not surprising. Brady’s job as the New England starting quarterback is certainly safe, but this week should go a long way in determining the winners and losers of certain position battles. The Pats will play their first preseason game Thursday against the Redskins (7:30 p.m., CBS-4), but before we get there, Metro takes a look at the performers who have wowed and also those who have struggled at camp so far:

Stock down: The backup QBs

We expected to be drooling over Revis at training camp and that’s exactly what’s transpired. Soooo ‌ stock is the same? Revis has seemingly gotten the best of Tom Brady at camp – no small feat considering Brady is in peak form, having torched the Redskins secondary at practice Monday. The former Jets and Bucs star picked o Brady for a “pick-sixâ€? at practice last week and has given the Patriots’ secondary a noticeable swagger that features a much-needed upgrade in physicality.

Who will take the Brian Hoyer Memorial title of “Mr. August?â€? We have four preseason games coming up to ďŹ gure that out, but the early camp returns aren’t great for Ryan Mallett and Jimmy Garoppolo. Mallett reportedly had issues throwing the deep ball in practice Monday and was picked o. Meanwhile, Garoppolo’s failures JIMMY GAROPPOLO have already been well HAS BEEN INCONSISTENT documented as every time IN CAMP. you look up at practice he’s GETTY IMAGES either holding on to the ball too long or running punishment laps.

DOMINIQUE EASLEY MISSED THE BRUNT OF HIS SENIIOR YEAR. GETTY IMAGES

The former Florida star tore his ACL early in his senior season and it appears that the injury is still a huge issue. While the defensive tackle took part in the Patriots’ minicamp in May, he has still not yet practiced in training camp and is simply doing conditioning drills. There’s a good chance he will miss the ďŹ rst six games of the regular season.

Stock up: Vince Wilfork

Vince Wilfork looks slimmer in camp. / GETTY IMAGES

↑

After the big man ruptured his Achilles last September there were hindsight whispers that he was out of shape. He is listed as 6-foot-2, 325 pounds on the Patriots website — but those vitals are about as accurate as a Patriots weekly injury report. The consensus is that Wilfork now looks relatively slim and he has said he made a conscious eort in the oseason to take some pressure o that healing Achilles.

Stock up: Duron Harmon

It’s a safe bet that Bill Belichick has the Gillette Stadium groundskeeper (water that FieldTurf!) make out the depth chart each August. Rookies are given no respect and veterans are given too much respect. But one curious item from last week’s chart shows Harmon as the starting strong safety. Harmon was thrust into action as a rookie last year when Steven Gregory was injured. The Rutgers product performed well, most notice-

ably in the late November comeback win over Denver — when he registered 11 tackles. He also had two interceptions last season. Harmon will look to hold o Patrick Chung in camp for the starting spot next to Devin McCourty.

NBA. Scalabrine to make return to C’s broadcasts

Brian Scalabrine is “coming home.” GETTY IMAGES

The “Scal-a-Brin-e!” chant will again be in full force at TD Garden this winter. Former Celtic Brian Scalabrine announced Monday that he will return to Comcast SportsNet as an announcer after a year away. Scalabrine announced his decision by poking some fun at LeBron James’ “Coming Home” letter. “I took the ball, took their pride and showed them what the White Mamba was all about,” Scalabrine wrote at CSNNE.com. “I’m ready to accept the Scallenge. Boston, I’m coming home.” MATT BURKE

Sox and Cardinals tangle in World Series rematch The Red Sox won’t play at Fenway Park again until Aug. 14, and the break is probably a good thing considering the Sox have lost five of their last six games at the old ball yard. Boston will begin an eight-game road trip Tuesday when it faces the Cardinals in St. Louis in a rematch of last year’s World Series. The Cardinals are in much better shape these days than the Red Sox as the birds were buyers at the MLB trade deadline. In fact, St. Louis poached starter John

Allen Craig, acquired by the Red Sox from the St. Louis Cardinals last Thursday, is set to face his old squad this week. / GETTY IMAGES

Lackey from the Sox, though Lackey won’t face his old team this week. Lackey made his Cardinals debut Sunday night against Milwaukee, throwing seven innings and allowing two earned runs on seven hits in a 3-2 St. Louis win. The Cardinals gave up fan favorite Allen Craig in the Lackey deal and Craig has played in one game so far with the Sox. He registered a double against the Yankees last Friday, but an ankle injury caused him to miss Saturday and Sunday’s games against New York. It is likely that Craig will see action against his former mates this week. MATT BURKE
