City reviews 911 overhaul, makes recommendations Manhattan. Officials laid out suggestions for fixing the system. The city’s beleaguered emergency 911 system relied too heavily on outside consultants and was too divided between agencies that failed to communicate, administration officials said Wednesday. In May, the de Blasio administration announced it put an upgrade to its Emergency Communications Transformation Program on hold after doubts were cast on its ballooning expenses while complaints of dispatch delays increased. The city originally set out to redesign the 911 system in 2004 two years after the Sept. 11 attacks, and it was slated near

day will delay plans till at least 2018 with an added cost of $100 million. After the two-month review of the system, officials said the 911 program would be largely overseen by the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications Commissioner Anne Roest. City staff would replace consultants whenever appropriate to cut costs, and the different agencies involved — including the police and fire departments — would better cooperate with each other. “It is critically important that we get this right, and the assessment team led by DoITT Commissioner Roest has mapped out the way forward,” Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said. This is Sharpton’s latest response to the death of Staten Island resident Eric Garner to a reported chokehold by an NYPD officer. Brooklyn. Residents vent on Park project Residents of Brooklyn Heights gathered on Wednesday to voice their frustration with city officials who are moving on with a plan to erect two new apartment buildings in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The city floated 14 newly released designs for two empty lots on the park’s Pier 6, spaces that officials argue were never intended for green space and can grow affordable housing. Meanwhile, residents argue the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation that maintains the park is ignoring their concerns. “We want the conversation to focus on the park and its visitors — now and in the future — and we don’t think that’s happening,” said Lori Schomp, 32. On Wednesday, the mayor’s office argued that the proposals offer a chance for the city to operate the park in perpetuity while creating affordable homes for Brooklynites.

NATO fears Ukraine invasion by Russia

Putin. A U.S. official said Washington was keeping a “very close eye” on Russian activity at the border. Russia has massed around 20,000 combat-ready troops on Ukraine’s border and could use the pretext of a humanitarian mission to invade, NATO said on Wednesday, its starkest warning yet that Moscow could soon mount a ground assault against its neighbor. President Vladimir Putin announced Moscow’s biggest economic response to Western sanctions, launching a tit-fortat trade war by ordering his government to restrict imports of food from countries that have im-

posed sanctions on Russia. With fighting escalating and rebels losing ground since a Malaysian airliner was shot down over separatist-held territory, Russia announced military exercises this week in the region. Moscow could use “the pretext of a humanitarian or peace-keeping mission as an excuse to send troops into Eastern Ukraine,” said NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu in an emailed statement. A NATO military officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Russia’s buildup at the border included tanks, infantry, artillery, air defense systems, logistics troops, special forces and various aircraft. A Russian defense ministry spokesman of the accusation: “We’ve been hearing this for three months already.” REUTERS

Ebola. ‘Plantibodies’ derived from tobacco fight against virus Drugmakers’ use of the tobacco plant as a fast and cheap way to produce novel biotechnology treatments is gaining global attention because of its role in an experimental Ebola therapy. The treatment, which had been tested only in lab animals before being given to two American medical workers in Liberia, consists of proteins called monoclonal antibodies that bind to and inactivate the virus. For decades, biotech companies have produced such antibodies by growing genetically engineered mouse cells in enormous metal bioreactors. But in the case of the new Ebola treatment ZMapp, developed by Mapp Pharmaceuticals, the antibodies were produced in tobacco plants at Kentucky Bioprocessing, a unit of tobacco giant Reynolds American. The plant-produced monoclonals have been dubbed “plantibodies.”

Known for calming nerves, quick-growing, inexpensive tobacco can help fight viruses as well. / GETTY IMAGES Quoted

“Tobacco makes for a good vehicle to express the antibodies because it is inexpensive and it can produce a lot.” Saphire “Tobacco makes for a good vehicle to express the antibodies because it is inexpensive and it can produce a lot,” said Erica Ollmann Saphire, a professor at The Scripps Research Institute. “It is

grown in a greenhouse and you can manufacture kilograms of the materials. It is much less expensive than cell culture.” In the standard method of genetic engineering, DNA is slipped into bacteria, and the microbes produce a protein that can be used to combat a disease. A competing approach called molecular “pharming” uses a plant instead of bacteria. In the case of the Ebola treatment, Mapp uses the common tobacco plant, Nicotiana benthanmianas. REUTERS

Africa’s reign of terror Terror pays. A rapid increase in terrorist acts is being fueled by drug money and ransoms. Though the 300-some Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by the Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram in April may not be aware of it, governments around the world are closely monitoring their fate. That’s because while their abduction is alarming in itself, it also points to Boko Haram’s growing capabilities. “It started as a sort of sect and now it’s using the same methods as al Qaeda,” notes Ambassador Smail Chergui, the African Union’s commissioner By the numbers

for peace and security. “They’ve also received a good number of weapons smuggled from Libya. That’s a challenge the Nigerian army was not immediately prepared for.” Boko Haram’s audacious acts — which include not only mass kidnappings of schoolgirls but also the killings of some 5,000 people — are only one part of Africa’s growing terrorism problem. In the East, the Somalia-based Islamist group al Shabaab has recently carried out attacks in neighboring Kenya. In Algeria, the AQIM (al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb) offshoot al-Mulathamun Battalion is gaining prominence through well-executed attacks such as the 2013 raid on a gas facility. AQIM itself instills fear among local residents, government officials and expats alike through suicide bombings, kidnappings and executions. According to a Financial Action Task Force report, Africa experienced 978 terrorist attacks in 2011, an 11.5 percent increase over 2010. Yet, terrorism watchers report this surge in African

terrorism didn’t come out of nowhere. “There’s a security vacuum in places like Libya,” notes Jennifer Giroux, a senior researcher at the Center for Security Studies in Zurich, who specializes in African terrorist groups. “There’s also been a rise in illicit activity such as drug trafficking, smuggling and kidnap for ransom. Cor-

rupt officials have been encouraging such activities because they financially benefit from them, thereby giving the groups space to operate and become emboldened. Over time, there has been a collusion of business interests.”

The Sunni terrorist organization has greatly expanded its power base in a short amount of time, bringing entire regions under its control. Cemented in its name is the ideological goal of ISIS, “Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.” It wants to create a large-scale theocracy made up of Syria, parts of Iraq, Lebanon and large parts of Palestine and Jordan.

Terrorist groups have turned kidnap for ransom into a hugely lucrative enterprise. According to a recent investigation by The New York Times, European governments have paid al Qaeda member groups $125 million in ransom for hostages since 2008, including $66 million last year alone. According to the Financial Action Task Force, Boko Haram and other groups also traffic arms and drugs. Indeed, West Africa has emerged as a popular station for Latin-American drugs bound for Europe.

#THANKSOBAMA Despite being hammered like a nail by the courts and critics lately, President Barack Obama was beaming the other day as he talked to a room full of reporters about a topic that was toxic not long ago. “In my first term, if I had a press conference like this, he said with his eyes twinkling, “everyone would ask about the economy! He has a point. Unemployment has been creeping down. Job creation has become more common than job loss. And the most recent CNN/ ORC International poll shows that the percentage of Americans who say the economy is good is moving up, from an anemic 29 percent last October to 41 percent now. But that is where the good times come to an end. #schreechinghalt The same poll shows 58 percent still think the overall condition of the economy is poor. The jobs that have come back in the Obama rebound are worth

much less than the jobs that were lost in the Bush recession. Sure, for government purposes #ajobisajobisajob, but the middle manager who once made $90,000 a year knows that his new job for $40,000 is just not the same. And his bank account knows it. In an Internet meme, people post complaints about all sorts of everyday annoyances: parking tickets, canceled TV shows and cold waffles, then add #thanksobama as if the president is to blame. It’s funny and unfair. But perhaps it speaks to a fundamental belief among voters that disappointment is the new normal. I suspect the president is not being asked about the economy any more mainly because so many people think #whybother? The slog will continue, the middle class will struggle on and the president will keep pointing to the weak numbers, grinning and saying, “That shows you the power of persistence.

You Can’t Win The Game If You Don’t Know The Rules The rules have changed. Sadly, most people still operate under the old money paradigm: go to school; get a job; work hard; save; invest in a 401k, etc. How’s that working out for you? For most people, it’s NOT!

This girl’s taxidermy isn’t just for display. It’s for dining on, too. Former fine arts student Elle Kaye skins, stuffs and serves delicacies such as hare, pheasant, grouse, venison, wood pigeon and even roadkill to “ensure that no component is wasted.” The taxidermist, who lives in London, explains why her work actually “brings new life” to edible “subjects.” Why did you become a taxidermist? I pursued a fine arts degree at university where I was able to incorporate my interests [in] anatomy and

biology into my practice. Doing taxidermy seemed like a natural progression, and it reawakened my fascination with animals. What’s so fascinating about working with animals after death? I am blessed to have the privilege of giving new life to animals that have passed away. I see my job as a privilege and I just want to do the animals justice. So why do you eat stuffed animals? I eat the meat from the animals that I work on because I strongly believe

in recycling the whole animal. Rather than just using the skin, I ensure that no component gets wasted. It does not make sense to me to throw anything away and it feels natural, as a meat eater, to eat the meat (within reason) from the animals I take the skin off [of]. Which is the most delectable? The tastiest is pigeon: I love how rich and gamey it is, and there are so many ways you can serve it that it allows for creativity in the kitchen. DMITRY BELYAEV, METRO WORLD NEWS

CULTURE Renewed

Call it a comeback

After being catapulted to superstardom with 2007’s “Transformers,” Fox’s star fizzled, thanks to bombs like “Jennifer’s Body.” She even compared her one-time director Michael Bay to Hitler. She was then mysteriously booted from the franchise for No. 3. But she’s quietly been working her way back into good graces. She filed surprisingly personable turns in “Friends with Kids” and Judd Apatow’s “This Is 40,” in which she, well, mostly held her own with the likes of Leslie Mann and Chris O’Dowd, all while mocking her image. Apparently it worked: Even Bay seems to have forgiven her, as he’s the one of the producers of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

Q&A MEGAN FOX: QUOTE MACHINE Megan Fox said she gets sensationalized by the press. Then she gives the press more meat. NED EHRBAR Megan Fox has a bone to pick with the press. “I like to be open with you guys, and I like to be honest. I hate being disingenuous,” she tells reporters while promoting “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” in which she plays journalist April O’Neil. “But … so Like a Fox

The state of journalism: “I’m not trying to tell you guys that you’re becoming obsolete, but everyone with an iPhone is a journalist in their own way now. When you watch CNN and they’re giving you news based on tweets that people are sending out, you realize that society is really changing. The collective public have a really big voice that they didn’t previously have,

much of what I say gets sensationalized. Even when I’m trying to be straightforward and honest, and my comments are innocent, inevitably they get turned into something salacious. ... You guys should all behave yourselves and be nice when

you report on things that I say.” Far be it from us to add to Ms. Fox’s concerns, so here, in her own words, are some of the straightforward, honest and innocent things she has to say about “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

and they’re influencing the trajectory of how we are socially. I don’t know, I’m going to start getting metaphysical with you.”

Dealing with haters online:

“When we were doing ‘Transformers,’ Shia and I were sort of just screaming things at the sky. We had no references at all at that point — because how can you? I mean, you’re dealing with, like, 30-foot robots.”

“I don’t mind doing that stuff. I think that’s been a part of being an actress in Hollywood since the beginning. I don’t feel ashamed or like I can’t be taken seriously while also wearing a tank top. And if you don’t take me seriously while I’m wearing a tank top, that’s your f—ing problem, not mine.”

“Let me tell you something about those people. How much money did ‘Transformers 4’ make? Exactly. Those people can complain, [but] they all go to the theater as soon as the movie’s coming out. They’re going to love it, and if they don’t love it they can f—off, and that’s the end of that.”

‘What If’ vs. the rom-com

Does the new Daniel Radcliffe film transcend or succumb to the dreaded genre?

1 2 Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan are definitely just friends (maybe) in “What If.” / CAITLIN CRONENBERG

Rom-coms

Can a rom-com even exist these days without irony? “What If” is coming out at a time when the genre isn’t respected and is often sent up, as in the recent devastating Amy PoehlerPaul Rudd parody “They Came Together.” “What If” doesn’t want to be loved only by earnest viewers; it wants everyone. How’d that go?

The peace settlement

This has a very rom-com premise: Daniel Radcliffe plays Wallace, who meets Zoe Kazan’s Chantry at a party. They hit it off, talk all night, and then she casually blurts out that she lives with her longtime boyfriend, Ben (Rafe Spall). The two become friends anyway — but, as in every hesitant rom-com ever, could it be more?

But it’s pretty inevitable that they will get together. Spall’s character isn’t a full-on jerk, but he is dodgy. It’s hard to know what to make of him. He quietly taunts Wallace about not stealing his girl but in a creepy-jerkish way. He mostly disappears from the picture after entering it, and it’s not clear what Chantry sees in him or why he can’t just be handily dispatched.

This isn’t “When Harry Met Sally,” which asserts that (straight) men and women simply can’t be friends. “What If” takes its situation with enough seriousness to not torpedo the jokes. At its heart it asks, as the old Deee-Lite songs goes, what is love? At what point does chemistry go from mere camaraderie to romance? There’s a tension in the film that lasts longer than it should, and it even seems for a good stretch that the film may end with them not together.

But “What If” knows how to charm its way out of its problems. It’s funny, sharp-tongued and features a revelatory, quick-witted turn from Daniel Radcliffe, who dismantles any possibility he’ll be trapped by a certain boy wizard film series. Radcliffe has great chemistry with Kazan, who has never been more loose and comfortable. It uses most of the genre’s tropes, but covers them in a thick grime of actual good jokes, fun performances and nuttier-than-usual token friends, chiefly Adam Driver and Mackenzie Davis.

•••••

Conclusion

Something better

‘What If’

FILM

In the end, it all balances out. “What If” doesn’t pretend to be a dissection of the rom-com genre. It takes a while for viewers to realize it’s simply slightly self-aware. It knows that the traditional rom-com is silly, yet it gives us the goods anyway. And it shouldn’t be punished for being a rom-com, especially as a mostly tolerable one. But like its central romance, “What If” is naggingly ambiguous, caught in a wishy-washy space between rom-com retread and something smarter. What about the comedy? Amusing as it often is, when the movie starts milking a gag about the Fool’s Gold, the caloriebursting sandwich that helped kill Elvis, it seems downright glutinous. Thriller. There’s a tornado and no real characters in ‘Into the Storm’ ‘Into the Storm’ ••••• It’s been almost 20 years since “Twister,” and here’s a another severe weather thriller, this time with a found footage premise. As a tornado rips through a suburban town, numerous people try to film it rather than seek safety.

The lowdown: Like a lot of found footage films (recently “The Sacrament”), “Into the Storm” plays fast and loose with the rules. There are plenty of regular movie shots along with the usual shaky-cam footage, plus a sprawling ensemble cast, albeit no real characters. There are interchangeable teens and interchangeable TV documentary crew members.

Only Matt Walsh (“Veep”) stands out, playing a jerkish filmmaker trying to get the perfect shot of a tornado in action. For the record, “Into the Storm” avoids a lot of “Twister”’s stupidities. No character, for instance, has a dumb back story about a tornado killing her father. But it aims too low, cycling through pedestrian storylines,

such as the workaholic father (“The Hobbit”’s Richard Armitage) who has to reconnect with his brooding son. The effects are smoothly integrated, but found footage wielded by faux-amateurs is far from the ideal way to behold terrifying weather. It’s a wonder the filmmakers didn’t abandon the gimmick completely.

What this cameraman is doing in “Into the Storm” is not very smart.

Harry Potter in love Interview. Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan are friends in love in “What If,” but just friends in real life.

“What If” is the only the third Daniel Radcliffe film to be released in America since the “Harry Potter” series concluded. And it’s more than that: It’s his first comedy. He plays a young man in love with a friend (Zoe Kazan) who’s in a relationship. In real life, the two actors are good friends, too. How well did you know each other before this? DR: We met once three years ago. I knew her enough to know this wouldn’t be a horrible experience. We are weirdly similar. We laugh at the same s—.

ZK: I keep saying chemistry’s just curiosity. It’s very easy to be curious about Dan. I always knew something was happening. During week two I saw the producers crowing in a corner, rubbing their hands over something that had happened between us. And I knew, “Oh, we’re OK.”

Zoe, you’ve done your share of comedies, but Daniel, this is your first, apart from a bit on “Extras.” DR: One of the things I love about this film is it makes you incredibly happy. It’s a feel-good film without being manipulative or sentimental. Those first moments of meeting somebody are so thrilling and precious. I was really excited to be in a film that would make people happy for a change. This isn’t a mere romantic comedy, though

it’s that too. ZK: I hope people take it on its own terms. I don’t think it’s striving to be a great romantic comedy. I think it’s striving to be a great movie. DR: There was a review I read coming out of Toronto that pissed me off. I don’t mind people reviewing things badly or having opinions, but it’s when people pretend to know our thinking and criticize that. It said, “They think they’re reinventing the romantic comedy.” No! None of us did, you d—! We wanted to make a good film! I’ve never known an actor to think about genre. You’re not looking at a pile of horror scripts and a pile of romantic comedy scripts and a pile of drama scripts and thinking, “Which are the best of these?” You just go, “Christ, are any of these good?”

It’s also pretty serious about heartbreak DR: It’s a very true-tolife situation. And it’s made more true-to-life by the fact that Zoe’s decision is very hard to

Pretty thin but semi-edible gruel Food movie. Helen Mirren does her best to make this lit movie tolerable.

‘The HundredFoot Journey’ Helen Mirren turns her nose up at great food in the lit adaptation “The Hundred-Foot Journey.” / FRANCOIS DUHAMEL

••••• What: Helen Mirren plays a

snooty French restaurateur who gets hopping mad when an Indian restaurant, populated by an up-and-coming chef (Manish Dayal) and his old-school dad (Om Puri), opens up across the street from her. That’s it. The lowdown: Perhaps someday someone will create riveting cinema about someone getting peeved when a restaurant with a different type of cuisine opens nearby. But this belongs to a

dreaded film genre: the tasteful Lasse Hallstrom literary adaptation, populated by “The Cider House Rules,” “The Shipping News” and “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.” There are light jokes, and people learn minor lessons. The real question, though, is: How is this as food porn? It’s only OK. There are plenty of gawkable dishes — from traditional French to spice-heavy Indian to, ultimately, a mouth-watering fusion of the two — but Hallstrom’s

cameras give them only moderate screen time. The only real fun is watching Mirren as her character tries to maintain her regal poise while engaging in a petty war with her noncompetitors. As expected, she brings a secret vulnerability to her character, while Puri busies himself with an endearing bluster. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Music doc. A jazz legend gets his due

Profile. The ‘Dog Day Afternoon’ returns

‘Keep On Keepin’ On’

‘The Dog’

••••• What: Music documentaries are in vogue right now, and the latest gloms onto Clark Terry, one of many jazz greats whose praise seems to only be sung by the titans. While summing up his career, the film follows Terry, now in his 90s, as he mentors young, blind pianist Justin Kauflin. The lowdown: Terry schooled and inspired the likes of Quincy Jones and Miles Davis, and played with Charlie Parker and Duke Ellington. And yet there’s only a moderate amount of killer stories here (one from

Davis). Director Alan Hicks, himself a drummer, mostly stays in the present day, hanging with a seriously ailing Terry as he tutors Kauflin. That Kauflin actually struggles to achieve success does give a certain spiky shape to this chunk of the film. But their relationship still makes for redundant cinema. It’s touching, of course; Terry seems to be using every last inch of his copious energy to inspire his young charge, who himself is trying to keep old-school jazz alive on more than just dusty records. A dig through Terry’s 2011 autobiography would be more instructive, but this still does the trick. MATT PRIGGE

••••• What: It’s already been made into the stranger-than-fiction movie “Dog Day Afternoon,” but now the story of John Wojtowicz makes a stranger-than-fiction doc. In 1972, Wojtowicz created a hostage situation at a Brooklyn bank in an attempt to pay for his male lover’s sex change. The lowdown: Great as it is, “Dog Day Afternoon” downplayed its anti-hero’s pansexual leanings. Among other things, “The Dog” argues for Wojtowicz as a gay rights icon who didn’t hesitate in identifying himself to the police as homosexual.

Justin Kauflin and Clark Terry rock out in “Keep On Keepin’ On.” / RADIUS-TWC

Then again, a bank robber is few people’s idea of an icon, and the Gay Rights Alliance, which once counted Wojtowicz as a member, instantly distanced themselves from him. “The Dog” best works as a portrait of Wojtowicz himself, who — rather than the sweaty, nervous freak portrayed by Al Pacino in the film — was a lifeforce. Filmed before his death in 2006, the film captures him in all his contradictory glory: a man who swung all over the sexual spectrum, and who thinks he did good for his lover by threatening bank employees with a gun. The film is loose and sloppy, sometimes overreaching — in other words, just like the real Wojtowicz. MATT PRIGGE

Reunion movie

‘About Alex’ ••••• “This is like one of those ’80s movies!” barks Aubrey Plaza well into this indie drama. She seems to mean a John Hughes film, although this is actually more like “The Big Chill” for people who graduated from college like eight years ago. Here, friends reunite in a cabin after one of them (Jason Ritter) attempts suicide.

The lowdown: On “The Big Chill” knockoff scale, this ranks between “Peter’s Friends” and “The World’s End,” but closer to the not very good former. At first, the inclusion of a failed suicide adds something painfully real, with the characters believably debating whether to ignore it or discuss it. But it winds up falling back on comforting cliches, if not outright lies. Ultimately, it’s more scared of blunt honesty than its characters. Still, what power it has is mostly in the likeable cast.

Plaza, in particular, delivers a full-bodied performance. In comedies such as “The To Do List” and “Life After Beth” she can be arch and remote, but here she gives her character a full spectrum of emotions, moving from funny to hurt on a dime. Then again, this also has a guy with a serious beard and no sense of humor who shouts things such as, “I’m a truth-teller!” And right on the hour-mark, this laid-back film turns very, very serious, even melodramatic. Time-traveling love triangles Interview. “Outlander” star Caitriona Balfe gets cold — then steamy — in old Scotland. What would you do if you were on vacation with your husband in Scotland, and you accidentally time-traveled to the 1700s? Such is the dilemma faced by Claire Randall, a World War II-era nurse, and the heroine of Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander” books. The novels are now getting the Starz TV series treatment, with Caitriona Balfe stepping into the role of Claire. We talked to Balfe about time travel, and yes, we also asked her which guy she thinks Claire should end up with: her sweet modern husband Frank, or her sexy new beau from the past, Jamie.

“Being on a horse with someone else is not the most comfortable thing. Sam (Heughan, who plays Jamie) and I got to know each other pretty well through that whole bit. We spent about two or three weeks on this horse together in the freezing cold and the rain, but it’s all good fun. It’s all part of it.”

Why Claire is going to be OK living in the distant past “A lot of battles that she faces are this kind of idea that as a woman you should know your place, and I don’t think she’s ever been someone who would

Ronald D. Moore, best known for his modernization of “Battlestar Galactica,” is behind the adaptation of “Outlander.” It’s a bit of a shift from science fiction, but he says he’s been very lucky in his star. “She’s just a great trooper. She’s the one on the set that lifts the spirits of the crew,”

Moore says of Balfe. And it’s not just her positive attitude. Claire is in almost every scene of the show, and Balfe’s performance has to carry the show. Moore doesn’t sound too worried, though: “Her face is so expressive, and you can read the character so quickly that you can literally just cut to her for a reaction shot and the scene kind of lifts.”

Dr. Owen will see you now Interview. The actor returns to TV to play a surgeon in “The Knick.” Clive Owen may have started out on television, but he hasn’t appeared on a series since 1996’s “Sharman” — save for a hilarious self-parodying cameo on “Extras” for Ricky Gervais. Still, Owen respects his TV roots, including his first breakout role on the British series “Chancer” in 1990. “I did a lot of television when I was young,” he says. “[‘Chancer’] got me going, and I had a great time with it. I went off and did other things — theater, smaller films.” He means small films like “Croupier,” “Gosford Park” and “Children of Men” — certainly nothing to sneeze at. Almost 25 years later, Owen is happily taking to the small screen again with “The Knick,” playing Dr. John Thackery, lead surgeon in New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital in the early 20th century. So what brought him back? Well, being directed by Steven Soderbergh didn’t hurt. “I’ve known Steven sort of, you know, for a number of years, and I’m a huge fan of his,” Owen says. “But the reality is, as an actor, when you come across a piece of material that sets you alight and reminds

The fact that it’s 20 hours of television, all it means to me is that I’m lucky enough to be involved in something that I’m very passionate about.” Owen admits he didn’t always feel that way, given the time commitment — and that was even before the 10-episode series became a 20-episode series. “To be honest, before I started reading the script, I wasn’t sure I wanted to commit to 10 hours of television playing the same part,” he says. “I started to read the script to get a taste of what it might be like, and 40 minutes later there was no way I was not going to do it, because it was such a beautifully written script and such an amazingly original part. His character Part of the appeal was the role of Thackery himself, an ambitious, pioneering surgeon with a few substance abuse issues bringing him down. “He’s not a sort of leading character that’s

This ‘King Lear’ confuses the plot Shakespeare. If you don’t know this tragedy well, you might want to brush up before seeing it in the park.

It’s never a good sign when you overhear several people saying that they don’t understand what’s going on during intermission at Shakespeare in the Park. The Public Theater created the annual outdoor fest so that the Bard’s glorious repertoire would be free and accessible for all — and that means the crowd isn’t necessarily going to be made up of Shakespeare aficionados. Maybe they haven’t thought about “King Lear” since high school. Maybe they’re not familiar with the plot at all. Daniel Sullivan’s surprisingly bare-bones production, which opened last night at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, does nothing to clarify the twists and turns of this unwieldy work, which clocks in at about threeand-a-half hours. The set offers nothing to unspool the complex tale, which sprawls between castles and heaths, from England to France, without differentiation. The king’s two oldest daughters, Goneril (Annette Bening) and Regan (Jessica Hecht), take their

entrances from walkways that appear and disappear from opposite sides of the stage, spatially indicating their respective kingdoms. But it’s way too little visual guidance; minimal props and traditional costumes also fail to make something special of this adaptation. Thankfully, Tony Award-winning John Lithgow is a marvelous Lear; the actor has never shied away from roles that are larger than life and a little kooky. Here, his disenfranchised despot grows bewildered and ages in front of our eyes, instead of snapping and going mad. He

doesn’t quite match the simple profundity of Frank Langella at BAM earlier this year, but he does wash out the bad taste in our mouth from Sam Waterston’s screaming king, which he played at the Public in 2011. Between then and now, it looks like this nonprofit is just cursed when it comes to this play; perhaps the Public Theater should go back to casually chatting about “Macbeth” backstage and ban mentioning “King Lear,” instead. John Travolta’s alleged lover ready with a tell-all A man who claims to have been John Travolta’s boyfriend for six years is planning to publish a tell-all book about the relationship, according to the National Enquirer. “I’d stay in the room next to John in luxury hotels,” Greg Gotterba, who acted as Travolta’s private pilot at the time, tells the tabloid. “Sometimes he’d bring women along as beards. But he would ask

me to join him in his suite and we’d spend the nights together. It was our little secret.” Gotterba says his relationship with Travolta ended shortly before the star married Kelly Preston. “I feel sorry for Kelly. She’s a lovely person,” he says. “She’s in the middle of all this, and it’s unfair to her.” This has all got to be a lot for Travolta to take. He should get himself a massage, relax a little.

Charlie Sheen wears a promise ring (to a porn star) Charlie Sheen’s fiancee, porn star Brett Rossi, clearly likes it because she put a ring on it. Rock*A*Teens flying high again Reunion. An influential ’90s band returns with a renewed vigor. It’s always unfortunate when a great band receives their due respect after they call it quits. Such is the case for the Rock*A*Teens. The pride of Cabbagetown, Georgia, the emphatic and eventually influential indie rock band called it quits more than a decade ago. But thanks to Merge records, the story of the Rock*A*Teens has been reopened with at least one more chapter yet to be written. Following the reissue of “Sweet Bird of Youth” and a slot on Merge’s 25th anniversary festival, the band has reunited to play a handful of East Coast dates. “Mac [from the band Superchunk and head of

Merge Records] just called me up and said ‘we’re having a 25th anniversary. Do you want to reissue one of your records? And I was wondering if you want to come and play this festival,’” frontman Chris Lopez recalls. “So, instead of doing a one-off we figured we may as well do several shows. We got the right call at the right time.” From 1996 to 2001, the Rock*A*Teens released five albums and one EP. Defined by the dramatic swooning swagger of Lopez’s lyrics and vocal stylings, the band trudged through tumultuous terrain and soared with an emotive immediacy, eventually becoming known for their electrifying live shows. “You get older and your life just changes,” says Lopez. “Suddenly that’s not the most important thing in your life. And sometimes you just have to

make choices, you know? You can’t put as much time into something; you can’t put in the effort and you can’t hold up your end of the bargain. And just like anything you do for a long time, you want to do something different. You want to change. You make a lot of records, you do a lot of driving around, play a lot of shows, but nobody was getting rich and we weren’t making a living at it so you have to make a choice.” Recently returning to the stage to the delight of all who failed to catch them in their previous act, Lopez is enthusiastic about the experience. “Of course I had trepidation,” he says with a laugh. “But in hindsight it’s good. I love it. It seems like we’re even better now than we were then. I don’t know, maybe we all grew as musicians, but I don’t remember us being that tight. We were noto-

Mischa Barton wants to take back ‘The OC’

Quoted

“It’s really tough when you are young in this business. People blow a lot of hot air at you.” Barton

Talking points

details emerge from this interview: One, Barton is only 28 years old, and two, she has a tenuous grasp of the English language. Case in point: “I just like to be seen for the hard-working actress that I am and not for a bunch of extraneous press. In general people are super-quick to harbor on the gossipy stuff and less on how much work goes into it,” she says. “It’s really tough when you are young in this business. People blow a lot of hot air at you.” OK, I just don’t even know what to say about this.

Guys, Mischa Barton has some regrets — namely taking the role of Marissa Cooper on “The O.C.” In hindsight, Barton tells Metro U.K. that she would “probably not” have accepted the role that made her famous. “It’s something I came so close to not doing. I had a really great thing with film. People say be grateful for what you have, but it certainly [was] not the kind of thing I was expecting it to be. I’ve kind of seen it all,” she says, punctuating her statement, I can only imagine, with a weary sigh and a drag on a Gitanes. Two more surprising

Is that a baby bump we spy, Jennifer Garner? To be fair, Jennifer Garner has spent a good chunk of the last decade pregnant, so it’s understandable that some tabloids would jump to the conclusion that she and Ben Affleck are expecting once again just because she was spotted wearing a number of loose-fitting tops recently. Despite claims by OK! and Star that there’s a fourth Affleck child on the way, Garner’s rep insists that the reports are “not true.”

Kate Hudson got close to Ledger Kate Hudson has locked lips with a lot of attractive co-stars throughout her film career, but one really stands out in her memory. When

asked by Bravo’s Andy Cohen about the actors with whom she’s locked lips on-screen, the star responded, “I would say my favorite one was Heath [Ledger]. That was pretty excellent. I would say that, I look back at all of it, and that was really — he was lovely.” Hudson costarred with the late “Dark Knight” star in 2002’s “The Four Feathers.”

Kate Moss: No ticket, no problem According to several passengers, Kate Moss turned up to Turkey’s Bodrum Airport recently ready to board an EasyJet flight back to London too tipsy to notice she didn’t actually have a ticket. “The general consensus was that she didn’t have a ticket, but after chatting to the manager for some time, she was whisked off and ushered onto a flight,” an eyewitness says.

Add some allure to your summer wardrobe: Less is more with sheer.

You thought the crop top was your risque fashion moment of the season — but behold, another skin-baring trend is taking center stage: sheer fabrics. Before you go rolling your eyes at the thought of looking like one of Rihanna’s sidekicks, we would like to make a case for the trend. For the everyday gal, it’s not about wearing a head-to-toe sheer look (HR wouldn’t like that); it’s all about pieces with airy details, which can look sleek and modern (seethrough panels on blouses) or romantic and light (translucent fabrics extending the hemline of skirts). And with all this humidity, doesn’t a little extra ventilation sound nice? Plus, like the crop top, we’re betting sheer items are going to carry over to next season. So if you don’t have a piece in your wardrobe, start hitting the summer sale racks.

The new menu features fancy braids and a wispy topknot, plus special styles for shorter hair (like the Edie, “an of-the-moment pixie cut”). There’s also the pricier Dream(DIY) service, where a stylist re-creates any look the client wants based on images. So really, you have no excuse to show up to a party with a plain, boring blowout. What women really want in the bedroom, Part 1 What a woman wants in the bedroom can be confusing for many men. Does she want candles lit for romance or candle wax dripped on her nipples? Does she want to be made love to softly with feeling, or f—ed from behind with mad passion? I asked 1,000 women what they really wanted from men in the bedroom. They got real — and they got honest.

Foreplay (and it begins outside the bedroom)

Real-World Love Advice

CHARLES J. ORLANDO www.theproblemismen.com Charles J. Orlando is a relationship expert and author of the best-selling book series “The Problem with Women ‌ Is Men.â€? Find out more about him on his website, or visit him on Facebook for real-world love advice.

Bottom line: A man’s words and actions are the ultimate tools for eective foreplay.

Undress her, slowly “I want to be slowly unwrapped and revealed, like a present. DEBBIE B. “He needs to take his time with me until I can’t handle it. And I want to see him want me. It drives me crazy. MICHELLE S.

Too often, couples get down to business. Seduction can — and should — also be slower and not rushed.

“He just starts. We walk in the bedroom, and he expects me to just ip on my back, automatically be wet and ready for him to start thrusting.â€? MONICA F.

Bottom line: Anticipation and appreciation go a long way.

Sex in public

“Make me want you! FRAN T.

For some men, there are two types of foreplay: being touched and the anticipation of being touched. What these guys don’t seem to realize is that their version of foreplay is in direct opposition to a woman’s largest erogenous zone: her mind. Seduction is an art form and requires eort. It demands focus on her. She wants to feel important. She wants to matter. She wants to feel desired.

1 2 3

She might not want to actually have sex in public, but the thrill of being observed is a huge turn-on for many. To the guy who thinks his girl wouldn’t be like that: Yes, she would.

Bottom line: She has just as much desire as he does, and she wants the opportunity to show it.

Role-play “I love when he dresses up in his old Navy uniform. I didn’t know him then, so it makes things different, and men in uniform really turn me on.â€? JESSIE L. Taking on a dierent persona can be freeing. By putting on a costume or assuming a dierent role, you can kill o inhibitions that would prevent pleasure. Bottom line: Assuming a new role can not only be fun, it can eliminate established relationship dynamics that might stie sexual freedom.

True and Only Alternative to Traditional Braces

Up & down

Can you get back together with an ex? Yes! You can get back together with love, listening and empathy as your guides. Just keep your eyes open so you can avoid past situations and mistakes.

Up: Contrary to popular belief that men cheat more, recent studies show that the number of women who cheat is on the rise.

“Fifty Shades of Greyâ€? might not have the best writing, but men should be paying attention to why women like it in the ďŹ rst place. It’s not that nice guys ďŹ nish last — they just make sure she comes ďŹ rst. Find links to Charles’ top 3 picks of the week at Metro.us.

Power can be a big aphrodisiac for men and women alike. And just like their male counterparts, many women want to not be on the receiving end of control.

Down: A recent survey reveals that most men don’t feel oral sex is cheating. But when asked if their partners could do the same thing, nearly all angrily replied that in that case, oral sex was cheating. Nice double standard, guys.

Four cuisines in one place at SoHo’s UBK Coming up

Hot chef. Jonathan Renert left cooking once, but returned to fulfill a lifelong dream with Union Bar & Kitchen. Jonathan Renert took the long route to opening his first restaurant. The 42-year-old chefowner of West SoHo’s Union Bar & Kitchen, which opened in May, is a San Diego native who worked his way through the staples of the California food scene: seafood and Mexican street fare. While attending university in Japan, he trained outside of the classroom with everyone from dairy farmers to a sake master. After a long detour into finance, Union Bar & Kitchen, at 300 Spring St., is the sum of all those influences, with a focus on seafood and simple presentation. The Three Little Pigs pork belly sliders three ways are a must, as is the creamy and bright guacamole, hamachi tartare, and save room for the peanut crunch chimichangas. The bar doesn’t waste its taps on the usual fare, and the cocktail menu reads like a ’30s speakeasy. Metro caught up with Renert to talk about giving American fare a worldly spin.

Q&A

Jazz Age Lawn Party

JONATHAN RENERT

Why did you change careers to finance? I came back from Japan to San Diego, worked in one of the better sushi restaurants for a while and went to business school, trying to figure out what I want to do. I eventually got my MBA from NYU, and spent 18 years in finance. What lured you back to food? I never really stopped. I would cater friends’ parties, I would do my own — I always wanted to go back. I finally had to get tired enough of finance and get enough courage to go for it.

The hanger steak gets a 24-hour marinade. / ALL PHOTOS BY BRANDON HARDIN

What drew you to the food business? I got into it to pay for my extracurricular activities in high school. Even when I was in other lines of work, I always kept at it. How was being in Japan? Being able to speak Japanese and showing interest and making the effort is what allowed me to learn all the secrets to all the Japanese cooking that the world loves so much. Obviously, there were hard times, but it was fun.

Why open your restaurant in New York? My wife is from here, and hopefully we’ll have restaurants at other locations, but this is the place I live and love so why not here?

Guacamole is an unusual but welcome addition to the fish tacos.

Wine has its place among sweets. At Il Laboratorio del Gelato (188 Ludlow St., www.laboratoriodelgelato .com), for a limited time, you can try the Roffino Prosecco Gelato with Clementine. You can even take it home with you in a 20-ounce container for $10.50. A faint bubbly essence lets you savor the wine amid the other delicate flavors of this fruity sorbet.

GO Burger (1448 Second Ave., www.goburger.com) lists several milkshakes on its menu — three contain alcohol. The Night Rider is our favorite, with Kahlua, chocolate liqueur, chocolate ice cream and Oreos. There’s also The All Nighter, if you need a caffeine jolt.

Yes, you already know about the ever-popular Meatball Shop. But you’re probably overlooking its best treat: the Whiskey Float. You choose the whiskey, and you can really taste the liquor; yet the vanilla still comes though.

But they also expect elevated dishes, prepared with an eye toward source, nutrition and, of course, taste. “There’s an evolution going on in cuisine,” Puck said. “If you look at the way we cooked 50 years ago it is totally different than today. Stories to watch as Jets open with Colts

SPORTS Watch online

Find video and recap of Yankees and Mets games the following day at: Metro.us/sports.

NFL. Gang Green kicks off their preseason with th Indianapolis.

If the Jets aren’t postseason bound, att the very least they’vee improved the roster ster with more depth h and flexibility down own the road to add some high-profilee free agents in the upcoming coming years. The Jets will get a look at just how far along their rebuilding ilding has come as the Colts come into town on Thursday night at 7 p.m. on CBS.

Greg Salas left Hawaii as the college’s all-time leader in receptions, but the same success hasn’t followed him to the NFL. He’s been with four teams since being a fourth-round pick in 2011 and has just 35 career receptions. However, in training camp and at the Green and White scrimmage on Saturday, Salas has been a standout. He’s a good route runner with solid hands and he makes smart moves with the ball after the catch. “I’m pretty happy with the opportunities I’ve gotten,” Salas said. “I feel like I’ve made the most of them.”

Secondary concern

2

First-round pick Calvin Pryor has suffered with a concussion through the start of training camp, making depth an issue at safety. Then there is the play of Dimitri Patterson,

Open ended

It was assumed rookie tight end Jace Amaro would ascend to the starting spot during training camp, but the Texas Tech product has struggled. His route running isn’t precise and his hands — the smallest among any tight end in this past May’s

brought in as a free agent cornerback, who has struggled. Jets fans are still leery of Dee Milliner, who struggled for much of last year despite a solid close to his rookie season. The secondary will be tested against Colts QB Andrew Luck. One player to watch is Rontez Miles, who has had a good training camp.

Giants vs. Steelers: Three things to watch

Erectile Dysfunction (E.D.) When the “Magic Pill” isn’t so magic What do men do when Erectile Dysfunction pills aren’t effective? Don’t like the idea of expensive penile injections, suppositories, and vacuum pumps? The Giants and Bills were the first teams to get on the field this season last Sunday, but Big Blue will be right back at it on Saturday night (7:30 p.m., NBC). Again, the starters will probably only see a couple series on Saturday, but after last week’s questionable offensive performance they’ll need to show something. Metro takes a look at three storylines to watch as the Steelers come to town.

1

Runners in abundance David Wilson’s career came to an abrupt and unfortunate end since the Hall of Fame Game, but suddenly that loss doesn’t seem quite so costly. Andre Williams was a revelation against the Bills (seven carries, 48 yards, one touchdown), while free agent signee Rashad Jennings looked solid. But maybe

the biggest surprise this week in Giants camp was the ascendance of Peyton Hillis to No. 2 on the running back depth chart. The move comes with a caveat though. Head coach Tom Coughlin delivered the news Wednesday that Hillis would be out “a little while” with an “ankle/ foot kind of thing.” That means more of Williams and Jennings against the vaunted Steelers defense.

3

NFL draft — are not a sure thing. Jeff Cumberland has looked good throughout the offseason and Zac Sudfeld is someone who seems ready to take the next step. The Jets could benefit from Amaro coming along sooner rather than later, but they have developed some other promising options.

3

Manning up The Giants were quick to praise Eli Manning’s accuracy in the opener (6-of-7, 43 yards), but he frankly wasn’t very good. He was sacked and lost a fumble too. We’ll have to see how much better he looks in Ben McAdoo’s offense on Saturday. MARK OSBORNE

2

Cruz control The Giants’ top receivers — along with much of the offense — put up zeroes in the Bills game. Rueben Randle and Victor Cruz both had zero catches on zero targets. When asked Wednesday about “not doing much” in the game, Cruz deadpanned, “That’s one way of putting it.” Rookie Odell Beckham is improving, but he’ll still be out Saturday, so the veterans need to step up.

HILLIS WILL BE OUT SATURDAY AFTER HAVING A SOLID OPENER. GETTY IMAGES

A GOOD FIT AS IMPORTANT AS SKILL WITH ROOKIES When hunting for a rookie set to make a fantasy splash, fit is almost as important as talent. For example: We may think Sammy Watkins is the best prospect in this year’s receiver class, but he’s in a run-first scheme with E.J. Manuel as his quarterback. He’s just not in the right spot to produce even at a WR3 level for us. Some of this is starting to come to light as we head into training camp’s third week.

NFL news

Montee Ball’s appendectomy is just what the doctor ordered. His stock got so high we would’ve needed a ďŹ rst-round pick to get him. He’s a second-rounder now.

The unquestioned star of Saints camp has been first-round receiver Brandin Cooks. The undersized yet lightning fast Oregon State product has hit the ground running in one of the game’s premier passing offenses. As a versatile chess piece for mastermind Sean Payton and pinpoint thrower Drew Brees, Cooks is in an ideal spot to rack up 70-plus catches. He’s the main man to replace the

Donte Moncrief, WR, Colts: Hakeem Nicks’ drop down the depth chart in Indianapolis is music to the ears of T.Y. Hilton and Moncrief. Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Panthers: He’s the only

Devonta Freeman, RB, Falcons: The grim reaper is not chasing Steven Jackson. He’s already caught the ex-Ram.

Forgot about ’Dre Overreacting to one preseason game is usually bad form, but we got a window into Andre Williams during the Hall of Fame Game. The reigning Doak Walker Award

winner mixed in with the first-stringers, showed more burst and power than 29-year-old Rashad Jennings and got the goalline work. Williams is a complete zero in the passing game, but the Giants clearly see an early down timeshare here. Coming from Boston College can’t hurt when Tom Coughlin is your coach.
