On Aug. 12, 2013, James “Whitey” Bulger was convicted of murder, extortion and money laundering. But while one of Boston’s most notorious crime figures was sent off to prison for the rest of his life, that dark chapter of Boston’s history has yet to come to a close. In the year since a jury convicted Bulger, the 84-year-old has appealed his conviction, some of the families of his alleged victims have gone without closure and it’s still unclear if he will face charges for murders in Oklahoma and Florida, which have the death penalty. Bulger’s lawyers are expected to file their opening brief to the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals this week. A deadline has been set for Thursday. Bulger, who declared in court that his trial was “a sham,” is expected to argue that his right to a fair trial was prejudiced by “both erroneous rulings of the trial court and acts and/or omissions by the government before and during the trial,” court filings show. In a court filing, Bulger’s defense lawyers warned the ap-

Inescapable Although Bulger hasn’t been in Boston in months, his image seems to be everywhere. •

Johnny Depp has been portraying Bulger in various Greater Boston communities while filming for the upcoming movie based on the book “Black Mass.”

A documentary about Bulger’s trial, “Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger,” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and spread to other theaters earlier this year.

peals court that the record of the case includes 35 trial days and more than 1,000 exhibits totaling close to 10,000 pages. Despite the complexity and length of the trial, Brian Kelly, a former assistant U.S. attorney who helped prosecute Bulger, said the appeals court shouldn’t take longer than usual in deciding the case. “The appeals court, they will be grappling with the legal issues, not necessarily with the factual nuances of the case,” said Kelly, now an attorney with the firm Nixon Peabody. Calls placed and emails sent to Bulger’s appeal lawyer, Hank Brennan, went unanswered. Capital punishment cases are still possible for Bulger, who is accused in murders in Oklahoma and Florida, although prosecutors in those states have yet to say whether the charges will be brought. As more time goes by without a decision, Kelly said it is less likely Bulger will stand trial there. “Realistically, it’s probably less likely, but no one ever knows what they’re going to decide to do once the federal system is through with him,” said Kelly. Bulger is serving his life sentence at a federal penitentiary in Tucson, Arizona. MICHAEL NAUGHTON @MetroBosMike

Steve Davis: ‘I’ve got to finish it’ A year ago, Steve Davis sat in court as the jury returned no finding on the charge accusing Bulger of killing Davis’ sister Debra. While Davis is at peace that Bulger has been sentenced to life in prison, the ordeal isn’t over. “That part of the job is done — him being convicted. Now you have to deal with his appeal, not that that’s

going to go anywhere. It’s just going to be a waste of the taxpayers’ money,” said Davis. Like he did for the pretrial hearings and the weeks-long trial last summer, Davis said he plans to attend Bulger’s appeal hearings for his sister. “I’ll be there right to the end,” he said. “There’s nothing going to stop that. I’ll be there. I’ve got to follow this through. I’ve got to finish it.” METRO

Boston StrEATS to offer evening eats beginning this Thursday South End. Franklin Square will be home to the city’s first weekly evening food trucks. Boston’s love of food trucks has driven the city to a new frontier — dinner time. The city’s first weekly evening food truck program, Boston StrEATS, launches Thursday at Franklin Square in the South End, where eight local trucks will operate from 5-9 p.m. Organizers put the pedal to the metal two weeks ago, when the idea started gaining traction with city officials. Local food truck popularity has boomed in recent years, which begs the question: If cities like Miami, Los Angeles, and even Ann Arbor already boast evening food truck programs, why is Boston just now catching up?

At lunch time, lines for food trucks often wrap around the corner in Dewey Square. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO Quoted

“I think groups like going to one destination where they can split up and try different things.” Shemtov

“There has been a lot of activity around food trucks in the last few years, but I think Boston just hadn’t gotten to it yet,” says Anne-Marie Aigner, founder of Food Truck Festivals of New England, the producer of Boston StrEATS. Aigner hopes the program will expand to include more trucks in coming months, and

said she is open to the idea of adding another location. “People are looking for new things to do, and I think this will be a big winner. As long as the weather holds up and the foodies show up, we’ll keep it going,” said Aigner. “We do also hope to offer a beer and wine garden, but we thought we’d walk before we run.” Eclectic food options and free music aren’t the only draws, according to Avi Shemtov, owner of The Chubby Chickpea, one of the program’s featured trucks. “Typically in Boston, dinner has not really been a busy food truck time,” said Shemtov. “But having a handful of trucks in one place turns it into a destination more than an event, which is something that people are clamoring for.” MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

Fall River. Hernandez wants evidence quashed

South Boston. City Point tests out parking change

Former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez appeared in Fall River Superior Court Monday, where his attorneys asked a judge to suppress evidence in connection to the murder of Odin Lloyd. Judge Susan Garsh did not rule on the motion, which asked that recording devices taken from Hernandez’s North Attleborough home, including iPads, cellphones, a hard drive and a video recorder, not be allowed as evidence at his upcoming murder trial. The devices might contain photographs that prosecutors want to use against the 24-year-old murder suspect. Hernandez is accused of shooting Lloyd to death in an industrial park near Hernandez’s home in June 2013. He is due to stand trial this winter and has pleaded not guilty to Lloyd’s death as well as the shooting deaths of Daniel Abreu and Safiro Furtado in July 2012. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

A three-month test run that would expand resident-only overnight parking from four to seven nights a week in South Boston’s City Point area is reportedly being met with mixed emotions by residents. The Boston Globe reports that some residents feel that the experiment, which would cover roughly one-third of the neighborhood, is not enough to remedy the parking problem facing South Boston. City Council president Bill

Hernandez / METRO FILE PHOTO In court Judge Garsh is considering Monday’s request, saying she would take it under advisement. •

The trial for the Lloyd case is set to start in early January. Defense attorneys will argue for a change of venue during an Oct. 30 hearing.

Linehan said the initiative will address complaints about the lack of parking on weekends. If the trial run is successful, Linehan said, the parking restrictions may be extended to the entire neighborhood. Some residents are concerned that the program will make it difficult for their outof-town guests to visit. Currently, resident-only parking is enforced from 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. Monday through Thursday. Painful Obama: Iraq took promising step with Varicose Veins? new PM designation Militants. Obama said U.S. airstrikes were successful and military advice will be stepped up. President Barack Obama said Iraq had made important strides toward rebuffing a militant group on Monday with the designation of a new prime minister and urged the formation of an inclusive government to address the needs of all Iraqis. “Today Iraq took a promising step forward in this critical effort,” Obama said in brief remarks. Speaking to reporters from Martha’s Vineyard, where he

is vacationing with his family, the president also said U.S. forces had successfully carried out airstrikes against Islamic State militants in northern Iraq and had stepped up military advice to Iraqis and Kurds. Obama said he spoke with

Iraqi Prime Minister-designate Haider al-Abadi to congratulate him and to urge him to quickly form a new cabinet that is broadly representative of Iraq’s different ethnic and religious communities. “This new Iraqi leadership has a difficult task,” Obama said. “It has to regain the confidence of its citizens by governing inclusively and by taking steps to demonstrate its resolve.” Obama late last week authorized airstrikes in Iraq to protect U.S. personnel in the Kurdish capital of Arbil from the Islamic State, a Sunni fundamentalist militant group that has swept through northern Iraq, and to ensure that members of the Yazidi sect were not subject to systematic violence at the hands of the militants. Robin Williams dies at 63 1951-2014. Beloved comedian, actor and Oscar winner Robin Williams was found dead of a suspected suicide Monday.

Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams was found dead on Monday from an apparent suicide at his home in Northern California, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office said. He was 63. The sheriff’s coroner’s division said it suspects the death was a suicide due to asphyxia, but the cause of death is still under investigation. “This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken,” Williams’ wife Susan Schneider said in a statement.

WILLIAMS ALSO WON TWO EMMYS, FIVE GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS AND FIVE GRAMMYS.

Robin Williams was nominated for an Academy Award for best actor three times — “Good Morning Vietnam” (1988), “Dead Poets Society” (1990) and “The Fisher King” (1992) — but finally won for supporting actor.

Williams appeared as an actor in 102 roles starting in 1964, with three yet to be released. The highest grossing film he appeared in was 2006’s “Night at the Museum,” which grossed $250 million.

His work as a stand-up comedian — including his years co-hosting “Comic Relief” — have influenced countless famous joke-slingers. He also did extensive voice work in films like “Aladdin” and “Happy Feet.”

Williams, who won an Academy Award for his role as a fatherly therapist in 1997’s “Good Will Hunting,” had been suffering from severe depression recently, his publicist Mara Buxbaum said. Williams, who introduced his frenetic style on the late1970s TV series “Mork & Mindy” and had struggled with addiction in the past, had entered a Minnesota rehabilitation center last month to help him maintain sobriety. His representatives at the time said Williams was not using drugs or alcohol but had gone to the center to “fine-tune and focus” his sobriety after working a longerthan-usual schedule. With a film and television career spanning more than 40 years, Williams left an indelible mark on the entertainment world. Williams was most recently seen in a return to TV with the CBS sitcom “The Crazy Ones,” which was canceled earlier this year after one season. REUTERS

Tips I wish I had listened to I’m a multimillionaire with personal success on every level, but despite all of that, I’ve made mistakes and ignored people’s advice. Hopefully, you can learn from my mistakes.

Don’t let money dictate your life

I don’t know what it’s like to be truly poor, but growing up middle class in Connecticut, all I wanted was to be rich and successful. Now that I have achieved those goals, I’ll tell you it’s not all that it’s cracked up to be. I’m happy, but not because of my millions — my confidence and mental well-being are a result of other goals I didn’t initially anticipate having. I

Don’t ever regret failure Back in 2006, when my hedge fund wasn’t growing very fast, I ignored what made me successful, penny stock trading, and tried making long-term investments to help speed up my fund’s growth trajectory. I had no experience in the investing field, and yet, because I was batting a thousand in the stock market, I felt I could do no wrong. I was dead wrong, and I lost over $500,000. I knew that commenting on the future of these blue-chip companies always has been and always will be pure guesswork, and that’s why the majority of traders and investors lose money, but I “played the game” to get ahead. of the money It’s official. Courtney Love has spent more money than any of us will probably ever. And most of that cash she blithely dismisses as “Nirvana money.” The nerve! “I lost about $27 million,” she tells the U.K.’s The Sunday Times. “I know that’s a lifetime of money to most people, but I’m a big girl, [and] it’s rock ‘n’ roll. Love explains that she’d get loaded and make remarks on Twitter that would result in people suing her, and she’s still working out a few of those libel cases. But don’t worry, she’s a big girl. Chloe Moretz thinks dating is stupid

Kate Winslet’s husband with the weird name is a stay-at-home-dad

Apparently, now that E! News has broken the seal on the purported teenage romance between 17-year-old Chloe Moretz and 15-year-old Brooklyn Beckham the topic is fair game, as evidenced by a recent Sunday Times magazine interview with the “If I Stay” actress. One thing, though: Moretz ain’t having it. “I don’t even know what dating is at this point. It’s all so stupid,” said Moretz, who was recently seen enjoying an afternoon of skateboarding with Young Master Beckham. “Why can’t you just hang out with each other? Go to dinner if you want to? Why can’t you go skateboarding if you want to go skateboarding with a guy?” Oh, honey. You’re going to be asking yourself questions like that for a long, long time.

BOOKS Most Americans are not interested in reading books. Statistic Brain recently published an extensive study reporting that 80 percent of people in the U.S. have not bought a book in the past 12 months. It also stated that 42 percent of high schoolers will never read another book after they graduate. But with the popularity of graphic novels soaring, it’s perhaps the only genre that both intellectuals and those who “don’t like reading” are drawn toward. Here are some of the best new releases.

Its poignant story is one people of all ages can learn from.

Saving Sean Bean Interview. The actor known for dramatic deaths tries to survive his latest series. Martin Odum is a top secret FBI agent. His job is to go deep undercover in an assumed identity for months at a time with potential terrorist groups. Odum is scarily good at taking on the identities, called “legends. In fact, he’s so good at becoming someone else that his bosses are worried about his mental health. So far, it sounds like exactly what you would expect from a crime show about an eccentric genius. The twist? Martin Odum might be another assumed identity — he’s just unaware of it. The mystery of Martin

Odum’s true identity promises plenty of plot twists for TNT’s new series, “Legends, to unravel. Stepping into the role of Odum is Sean Bean, best known to audiences for losing his head as Ned Stark on “Game of Thrones. Or they know him as Boromir, who dies in “The Fellowship of the Rings. One begins to sense a certain theme in Bean’s roles. He’s so wellknown for not surviving his own movies that the producers of “Legends created a hashtag to promote the show called #DontKillSeanBean. Asked about the promoQuoted

“[He’s] a very lonely man who kind of throws himself into characters, like an addiction, to find some relief from his everyday life. Bean, on his character in “Legends.

tional campaign, Bean seems good-natured about the whole thing. He laughs and says, “It’s quite funny. I was quite amused by it. The show is a little more serious. Bean says he was drawn to the role partly because of showrunner Howard Gordon, who also executive produced “24, but also because, he says, “It was a very fascinating opportunity to play somebody who plays multiple personalities and creates the characters for himself in order to do the job that he does. The fact that Odum’s true identity is a mystery is heightened by the degree to which the character is isolated. Bean calls him “a very lonely man who kind of throws himself into characters, like an addiction, to find some relief from his everyday life. He’s happier being someone else. LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld

In the ‘Mood’ Salut! Audrey Tautou talks about what it’s like to act in a crazy Michel Gondry film. Audrey Tautou hasn’t spoken English in two weeks and keeps apologizing. “It’s difficult for me in English when I want to say something that is beyond that of a 7-year-old child,” she says. “In French, I promise I have all the correct vocabulary.” But she soldiers on anyway, talking over a trans-Atlantic call about Michel Gondry’s highly visual “Mood Indigo.” Tautou plays Chloe, a nice woman whose marriage to a playboy (Romain Duris) is jeopardized when she falls prey to a whimsical but deadly disease: She finds a water lily trapped in her lung. On helping to realize a book (from 1947, by Boris Vian) she read long ago onto the screen: “It felt like I was returning to my youth; it was very nostalgic. And it seemed impossible to adapt this novel. I was awful curious to see how Gondry would bring it to life.” The chaos of his sets: “It was a big mess — which he created intentionally, to get us to forget about the camera and be more natural. He doesn’t ask for silence then yell ‘Action!’ His cameras were always on. We wouldn’t know if they were on us or someone else. It made us feel very free.” Gondry vs. ‘Amelie’ director Jean-Pierre Jeunet: “Their aesthetics are so similar, but they’re so different. Jean-Pierre is a perfectionist. Everything is perfectly timed; the lighting is beautiful. Michel is the opposite. He likes when it’s not too beautiful, when it’s alive and everything’s a mess.” About being known for ‘Amelie,’ still: “That’s my hit! That’s it. I’m really proud of it. It would only be a problem if I hadn’t done any other movies.”

Rather than do it in post, “Mood Indigo” director Michel Gondry had stars Audrey Tautou and Romain Duris actually get into a cloud vehicle. / DRAFTHOUSE FILMS

Coming to America? After the success of “Amelie,” Tautou didn’t go Hollywood. (She did one film, “The Da Vinci Code.”) She’s often said that she’s a French actress and would never move to Los Angeles. Would she come here for work? “Yeah, of course. But I’m not the one who decides, huh? They aren’t waiting for me,” she says, laughing. “I’m not very social; I’m not very good at self-advertising. Next time I’m promoting a movie in America, I should just recite my list of preferred directors.”

Chris O’Dowd: Seriously funny Interview. The usually comic actor blends dark humor and dark drama in “Calvary.”

Chris O’Dowd does comedy (“The IT Crowd,” “Bridesmaids”) and drama (his Tonynominated turn in Broadway’s “Of Mice and Men”). But he gets to do both in “Calvary.” The latest from John Michael McDonagh (“The Guard”), it features him as a cuckolded butcher in a village whose local priest (Brendan Gleeson) receives a death threat from a mystery man who’s angry about the Catholic Church’s sex abuse scandal.

His initial reservations

Going home

His relationship to the setting “We shot the film 20 minutes down the road from where I grew up. That kind of nihilism the characters feel, I could recognize. Being brutally funny and brutally brutal is not something I had to think about.”

“I remember when I learned that John Michael was going to do a film about the priesthood, I was a little wary. I had a very positive relationship with priests when I was young. I kind of presumed — erroneously, it turned out — that it was going to be a hatchet job on priests. When I read [the script], I was pleasantly surprised that that wasn’t the case. I would consider myself an atheist — or as John would call it, ‘a recovered Catholic.’ I felt it was very interesting to have a priest who is a hero in a story where organized religion is often the enemy.”

A priest at the helm “The idea that Brendan’s character is somewhat ridiculed by the rest of the community was interesting. For centuries, people were made to feel small by their church. Now they’ve become the bullies. It’s almost like that

thing where you’re bullied then you go home and you bully your kids, and then your kids bully somebody else.”

The film is more agnostic than pro-religion in its philosophy “Even though [the premise of ‘Calvary’ concerns] our relationship with the church, it’s not about whether a God exists. It’s right to not come down on either side. Saying that God doesn’t exist would have been as bad as John saying that he does.”

Researching abuse by members

of the Church “I read a few cases. It’s harrowing. The disappointing thing is, once you start looking for that on Google, it’s endless. It’s one of the reasons I’m delighted the film is coming out. There are so many incredible stories — tragic and harrowing stories that have never been told. That we can do one feels good.”

The dark-edged humor of brothers John Michael and Martin McDonagh “They’re cornering the market on that, the McDonaghs. They’ve got an incredible sense for it. It’s almost like

Interview. Matt Walsh gets hit by some bad weather in ‘Into the Storm’

Matt Walsh plays the curmudgeonly head of a weather documentary crew in “Into the Storm.” / WARNER BROS. PICTURES

It seems strange for an effectsheavy movie such as “Into the Storm” to include an actor like Matt Walsh, a comedy guy. He’s a founding member of the Upright Citizens Brigade and plays the comfortably buffoonish Mike McLintock on “Veep.” It was a weird project for him to take on, he admits, even if it was a good challenge. “I always try to do stunts in comedy. So I’ve always felt like an action movie would be a blast,” he says. In the film — about a tornado that rips through God’s Country — he plays the tyrannical head of a documentary TV crew trying to get the perfect shot with their giant truck. “I get to drive a kick-ass vehicle. And it seemed a good arc for a character who

seems like a curmudgeon to get some redemption.” Though the tornado itself was obviously fake, Walsh wasn’t far from the real thing. “They had 400-mph fans blowing at us and people throwing leaves and sticks into the wind, or pelting us with golf-ballsized hailstones,” he recalls. For a stretch of the film, he and much of the cast have to hide in a sewer while the storm rages outside. “They had these towers that just ran cold water on us,” he says. “You stayed wet for the rest of the day. We were in the sewers for weeks, where it was windy and dusty. Then we lived in a restaurant during the rest of the day — sort of like the Ninja Turtles.” MATT PRIGGE

Small screen

Veeping Walsh shot “Into the Storm” while on break from the hyperprofane government satire “Veep.” Like everyone in the cast, his character is a regular target for insults, some of them about Walsh’s own physical appearance. But that’s fine. “The first day we get the new scripts, the first thing I look for is the awfulest thing they’ve written about me,” he says. “They’re always really funny.”

[Samuel] Beckett. The relationship between comedy and suspense is seen nowhere better at the moment than in the writing of the McDonaghs.”

He always wanted to work with Brendan Gleeson “He’s a very sweet guy. He carries himself with such integrity. He’s very open and very loose and always up for a joke. He has that kind of confidence where he doesn’t need to portray grandeur. But once the cameras go on, he’s like a colossus.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

There’s even a growing craft beer scene

The ports of Hamburg are popular with residents, tourists and merchants. / CHRISTIAN SPAHRBIER

Hamburg: It’s cooler than you thought Hamburg isn’t really an underdog destination. It can just feel that way: It doesn’t have the cool reputation of Berlin. But it has money. The city has the most millionaires in Germany. It’s a business and a journalism hub; Der Spiegel calls it home. It has the second biggest port in Europe (after Rotterdam), making it an in-

ternational trading hot spot. It’s doing just fine. Of course, those traits don’t make Hamburg seem homey, or even tourist-friendly — but it’s both. It’s the largest city in Europe that’s not a capital, meaning there is plenty of room for everyone and everything. Strolling (or, preferably, biking) from one neighborhood to another can feel like

embarking on an epic journey, going from scenic harbors to rich shopping districts to gritty apartments. If Berlin is New York City, then Hamburg is roughly Philadelphia — the more affordable living space that has its own unique charm. (Berlin is easily accessible via a two-hour Eurorail ride.) Indeed, you won’t see many Rich Uncle Pennybags

types strolling around the city. You see young people. Many of the city’s artist-types live in Sternschanze, which is filled with cafes, bars, green markets and record shops, some specializing in Hamburg-only music. But they migrate everywhere, including the vast Alster lake, a favorite place for sailing on one of Hamburg’s many, many windy days.

Hamburger helper?

The skeevy side The Reeperbahn is a stretch of Hamburg’s St. Pauli neighborhood that has long been a thriving red light district. It’s right by the port, and historically it was where sailors from around the world came to

Hamburg boasts another significant milestone, though this one is up for debate: The city is possibly where the hamburger was invented. Though history has proven vague on the modern burger’s origins, it almost assuredly has roots in the “Hamburg steak” — a patty of minced beef created in the 19th century. Who put a bun around this contraption is a mystery, but some Hamburg restaurants — including the Oberhafen-Kantine near Hafencity, situated in a leaning building — still serve

an early version of this: the “rundstuck warm,” which piles vegetables and gravy on top of a round patty.

Beatlemania

The Reeperbahn is also one of the sordid birthplaces of The Beatles. In the early ’60s, the band came to Hamburg to set up residencies at a handful of the street’s many clubs, playing numerous sets every day and, amazingly, never repeating a song per stint. (Paul McCartney and Pete Best were at one point deported for starting a fire with a condom.) If you want to savor the sights of the Fab Four’s origins, do it during the day time; at night they’re obscured by revved-up crowds and blinding neon.

There are plenty of places to get giant, refreshing, traditional German beers. And there’s the longtime Hamburg-brewed Astra — a staple of any German alehouse. But there’s also the Ratsheern Braurei in Sternschanze, a brewery that has been trying to catch a pioneering beer country up to the modern day. They even have an American master brewer.

Whether you’re sending a child off to school for the first time or raising a high schooler, it’s never too early — or too late — to talk about bullying. High school

‘Positive’ By Paige Rawl with Ali Benjamin This moving memoir not only puts the effects of bullying into perspective for teens but also educates about HIV. While a student, Paige Rawl was bullied so much about her HIV-positive status that she stopped going to school and even attempted to take her own life. It’s a powerful story about how hurtful words and rumors can be, and also how to pick yourself up and become stronger than your tormentors. Reading this first-person account will stay with you long after you finish reading.

‘Rocco the Platypus Gets Bullied’ By Rich Bergman and illustrated by Alexander Yogi Introducing the concept of bullying via this animal story is a good way to ease into the topic. In the book, a platypus named Rocco wants more than anything for the ducks, otters and beavers to like him, but they see him as an outsider. Rocco wins them over eventually through his kind actions and by not stooping to their level. Use this book to help your preschooler learn that he or she will meet different types of kids at school and that their differences should be celebrated. Then, highlight some things that make him or her special.

By Andrew Clements This story about how a kid goes from being a bully’s favorite target to taking him down has a “Revenge of the Nerds” feel to it that kids will love. It shows them what to do if they’re bullied and how to fight back without turning into bullies themselves. When you’re done reading the book together, start a conversation about what your son or daughter has seen in his or her school or ask if there’s anything he or she is worried about experiencing. This way, kids will know it’s safe to come to you with their fears.

3

‘Runt’ By Nora Raleigh Baskin Popular culture typically paints one person as a bully and one person as a victim, but what makes this novel so relatable is that it explores the gray areas in between. By incorporating online tactics and things that happen at school but are too subtle to be caught by teachers, it reveals a side of bullying that isn’t normally seen — and the consequences of actions both large and small. This book teaches kids that being complacent can be a form of bullying and that he or she should always stand up for what’s right.

addition, many women are strapped with explosives to their chests. So it would seem that the women and children are not so innocent there. Israel has been a democracy for 66 years. The Palestinians have had that much time to establish a presence in the political system and did not. Of course, it would mean that they would have to recognize the legitimacy of the country. So before condemning Israel think about the 66 years of missed Palestinian opportunities.

Re: ‘Israel can’t justify its actions’ (Metro, Aug. 11) To letter writer William Gore, Jr.: before condemning Israel for its missile attacks, you should ensure that they are murdering “innocent” children. I have seen many pictures of 9- and 10-year-olds holding weapons, which doesn’t seem so innocent to me. In

NBA. Something’s got to give as the Celtics have too many bodies.

Remember that trip Kevin Love took to Fenway on June 1? Maybe he just really likes baseball. Love isn’t coming to Boston to play hoops for the Celtics, that’s almost for sure. The All-Star power forward is almost certain to join LeBron James in Cleveland in a couple of weeks. So, what is the Celtics’ Plan A, now? All signs point to “stay the course,” but there will undoubtedly be some player movement before training camp opens. Some situations to keep an eye on: MATT BURKE @BurkeMetroBos

Celtics to keep tabs on as fall draws near

1 2 Is Rondo really here to stay?

RAJON RONDO POSTED ONE TRIPLE-DOUBLE IN 2013-14. GETTY IMAGES

There has not been one fresh Rajon Rondo trade rumor this week. What’s the deal? For all you Rondo haters, sorry. It’s becoming increasingly likely that No. 9 will be wearing green when the season begins in late October. If Danny Ainge is indeed hellbent on trading the longest tenured Celtic, he will likely do so when Rondo’s stock is higher than it is today. A trade would most likely happen near next February’s trade deadline, after Rondo shows some GMs across the league that he is still something of a triple-double machine. Rondo had just one triple-double last season as he recovered from injury.

Covet that Green It’s regarded as more fact than opinion around here — Jeff Green is overpaid. But get this: If Green puts up numbers like he did this past season (16.9 points per game), it’s a safe bet that he will actually opt out of his current contract to look for more money on the open market next summer.

Bass master

Wow, he’s still here? Brandon Bass has been mentioned in nearly as many trade rumors as Rondo over the past few years, but this may finally be the year. The power forward will become an unrestricted free agent next summer and

could certainly help a playoff contender down the stretch of the 2014-15 season. Of course, with the East so top-heavy, who’s to say the Celtics won’t be playoff contenders themselves. They’ve certainly got the depth issue covered as presently constituted.

BILL BELICHICK GETTY IMAGES

Belichick next up in ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ Patriots head coach Bill Belichick isn’t one for social media, famously saying he knows nothing about “MyFace.” But New York Giants president John Mara is attempting to get Belichick to take notice for a good cause. Mara took on the “Ice Bucket Challenge” that raises awareness for ALS and then “challenged” Belichick, Pats owner Robert Kraft and Jets owner Woody Johnson to take the challenge next. METRO NBA

Dobson, Easley at practice for Pats Injuries ravaged the Patriots roster last season, but so far so good in Foxboro this year. New England fans received some good news Monday as wide receiver Aaron Dobson and rookie defensive tackle Dominique Easley practiced for the first time in training camp. Dobson, who has been out with a foot injury, caught 37 balls for 519 yards and four touchdowns in his rookie season of 2013. Easley tore his ACL early in his final season at Florida. METRO

Tight end no longer a position of power NFL. Once the focal point of their offense, the Patriots don’t love tight ends like they used to. When the Patriots drafted Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez in the 2010 NFL draft, it signaled to many a change in offensive philosophy. New England wanted to go back to the future, to give Tom Brady as many options as possible in the middle of the field. Relying on the bigplay capabilities of Randy Moss on the outside was no longer important — the Patriots were implying with their actions — and not so surprisingly, they traded Moss in October of 2010. For several years, Bill Belichick certainly looked as though he was on to something as Gronkowski and Hernandez provided nightmarish matchup problems for defenses. Gronk had 10 touchdown grabs in 2010, 17 in 2011 and 11 in 2012. Hernandez had six TDs in 2010, seven in 2011 and five in 2012. But Gronkowski’s career has been interrupted by injuries and Hernandez is currently sitting in a jail cell. The Patriots are now adjusting on the fly, and over four years removed from their decision to go “tight end first,” it’s unclear as to what the philosophy is now.

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has still not been cleared for contact. / GETTY IMAGES

Truth be told, it’s difficult to imagine the Pats finding another tight end with the skill set of Hernandez anytime soon. This was a player

Big Ben The Patriots signed veteran tight end Ben Hartsock this week. •

Hartsock is a 10-year NFL vet, having played for the Colts, Titans, Falcons, Jets and Panthers.

The Ohio State product is known mainly for his blocking skills. He has just one career touchdown reception (2009 with Jets).

that lined up in the Patriots backfield at times as Belichick looked to take advantage of Hernandez’s unique agility at 6-foot-1, 245 pounds. Gronkowski, at 6-foot-6, 265 pounds, is more like the stereotypical tight end. He’s burly, is an exceptional blocker and has tremendous hands. Make no mistake, the Patriots will utilize Gronkowski to the nth degree if he’s healthy this season. But will New England’s offense be more tempted to go to a player like Brandon LaFell on the outside this year? Or will it focus mainly on Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola in the slot? Those options seem to be more likely than the Patriots focusing first and foremost on their tight ends.

Quoted

“I’m not out here running routes or anything at 80 percent. I’m running out there going full speed in the drills. But they are just limiting the drills I can do from the contact.” Rob Gronkowski, to ESPN on his health. Gronkowski is not yet cleared for contact.

It’s likely that the Pats will carry only two traditional tight ends on their roster in Gronkowski and Michael Hoomanawanui. The team dismissed rookie tight ends Asa Watson and Justin Jones after their first preseason game against the Redskins but signed three tight ends in the wake of that initial transaction as Ben Hartsock, Steve Maneri and Terrence Miller are now on board.

Hartsock is the best bet to squeeze onto the Pats’ roster by Week 1 as the former Carolina Panther is known for his exceptional blocking. Just don’t expect Hartsock to be one of Brady’s favorite targets. Hartsock caught just two passes in 43 games with Carolina the past three seasons. MATT BURKE @BurkeMetroBos

The Red Sox are no longer in “win-nowâ€? mode as the organization has its eyes ďŹ xed on 2015, but Boston looked solid in its weekend series against Anaheim, taking two of three.
