Bracing for a ban as a horse carriage driver Manhattan. A buggy driver goes through his daily routine and waits to be outlawed. Every workday, Peter Wilson wakes up at 6 a.m. and goes to one of the city’s most controversial jobs. “I can’t imagine doing anything else,” said Wilson, 41, who drives a horse carriage. “I love it.” On the morning Metro spent with Wilson, he arrives at the Clinton Park Stables and dons a top hat before heading into traffic at 9:30 a.m. with Gino, a horse he’s steered for five years.
Gino expertly weaves through 10 blocks of traffic, stopping at a Central Park hack line where Wilson offers passersby 20-minute rides for $50. The job would be stressfree, except Wilson’s not sure how much longer he’ll be able to do it. Wilson is just one of 240 licensed buggy drivers who will be out of work if Mayor Bill de Blasio and anti-horse carriage activists are successful in banning the decades-old tradition. Activists argue busy streets are no place for horses and say that the animals are subject to inhumane and dangerous conditions. “When you’re using an animal to put cash in the

There are about 300 people in the industry, which brings in roughly $15 million a year. Wilson said their livelihood depends on the health and
safety of some 220 other licensed horses. “We cannot afford to abuse the horse,” he said. There’s a palpable anxiety in Wilson’s daily routine, partially from the threat of harassment from activists. He also worries about job stability, though an electric car has been proposed as an alternative. The city council doesn’t have a set timeline for drafting legislation to ban the carriages. A spokesman said the de Blasio administration is considering a “range of options” to get the horses off the street as well as protect the livelihood of those in the industry. As City Hall waffles, Wilson and other drivers continue to wait for the

Pols push Brooklyn as host for 2016 DNC Local leaders gathered in front of the Barclays Center on Monday to back Brooklyn’s bid to host the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Led by Sen. Chief among those concerns is Brooklyn’s hotel capacity of 3,500 rooms, which Schumer called “a canard” and “gobbledygook” when delegates can stay in accommodations across the East River. Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said more than

Some Brooklynites are looking forward to the idea of hosting the DNC. “It would be great for Brooklyn,” resident Lorenzo Daughtry said. “I live two blocks from here. Barneys to pay $525K in probe over profiling Manhattan. An investigation was launched after complaints from two black shoppers.
Now is the time to take care of it! Varicose veins are MORE than just a cosmetic problem. They can also be a warning sign of a condition called Venous Insufficiency that kills over half a million people every year.
NEW YORK
Barneys New York will pay $525,000 and implement reforms to remedy allegations that its flagship store targeted minority shoppers for increased surveillance. The agreement follows a nine-month investigation led by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. The probe revealed “a disproportionate number of African-American and Latino customers being detained for alleged shoplifting or credit card fraud.”
The investigation was launched after two black shoppers complained about their treatment at Barneys’ Madison Avenue store. Trayon Christian, 19, filed a lawsuit against the store after being accused of stealing at $350 Salvatore Ferragamo belt. Kayla Phillips, 21, said she was detained after purchasing a handbag worth more than $2,000. As part of the agreement, Barneys will pay the $525,000 as well as hire an anti-profiling consultant, adopt new loss-prevention and anti-profiling policies and investigate complaints of profiling. In a statement, Barneys CEO Mark Lee said the company was pleased with the deal.
Problem
“Profiling and racial discrimination remain a problem in our state, but not one we are willing to accept.” Schneiderman “We are a truly progressive company that has absolutely no tolerance for discrimination of any kind, and believe this agreement will help build on that commitment and further strengthen our organization in the years and decades to come,” Lee said. Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams was found dead on Monday from an apparent suicide at his home in Northern California, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office said. He was 63. The sheriff’s coroner’s division said it suspects the death was a suicide due to asphyxia, but the cause of death is still under investigation. “This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken,” Williams’ wife Susan Schneider said in a statement. Williams, who won

When I went back to penny stock trading, writing and teaching about what I knew to be true, my performance, business and overall happiness all hit record highs — and that’s how I’ve achieved so much personal and business success.

Courtney Love spent all of the money

We bet some of that money went to plastic surgery, too. ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES
It’s official. Courtney Love has spent more money than any of us will probably ever. And most of that cash she blithely dismisses as “Nirvana money.” The nerve! “I lost about $27 million,” she tells the U.K.’s The Sunday Times. “I know that’s a lifetime of money to most people, but I’m a big girl, [and] it’s rock ’n’ roll. It’s Nirvana money; I had to let it go.” Well, she could’ve at least been nice enough to let some of it go in my direction, if she was so eager to part with it. Sheesh. And hell, I’m just a Nirvana fan. Imagine what Krist Novoselic would say. “I make enough to live on, I’m financially solvent,
I focus on what I make now,” Love says. So where did those millions go? Well, a lot went toward her habit of mixing prescription drugs and social networking. Love explains that she’d get loaded and make remarks on Twitter that would result in people suing her, and she’s still working out a few of those libel cases. But don’t worry, she’s a big girl. It’s rock ’n’ roll.

BOOKS
The importance of graphic novels
‘El Deafo’
The pictures may lure you in, but the stories will stick with you.
‘Satan’s Prep’ by Gabe Guarente and illustrated by Dave Fox High school is hell for a lot of people, but for 17-year-old Trevor it is literally hell. He has to get at least a D to be transferred from this holding for lost souls to Purgatory. Any teen who finds school less than desirable (so, most) will enjoy the cast of characters, gallows humor and carefully crafted illustrations in this newly released book.
Most Americans are not interested in reading books. Statistic Brain recently published an extensive study reporting
that 80 percent of people in the U.S. have not bought a book in the past 12 months. It also stated that 42 percent of high school-
ers will never read another book after they graduate. But with the popularity of graphic novels soaring, it’s perhaps the only genre
that both intellectuals and those who “don’t like reading” are drawn toward. Here are some of the best new releases.

‘The Graveyard Book: Volume 1’
‘Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?’
by P. Craig Russell Neil Gaiman’s “The Graveyard Book” is a best-seller, but this graphic novel adaptation introduces the story to teens who might not normally have picked up the original. Through witty language and skillful art, the book tells the story of a boy living in a graveyard and being raised by beings who are neither living nor dead.
by Roz Chast The New Yorker cartoonist released this book, her memoir, in graphic novel form, largely focusing on her aging parents’ last days. Like the cartoons she is famous for, it’s both humorous and quite sad. Chast succeeds in taking a complicated issue almost everyone will go through and making it deeply personal and relatable.

by Cece Bell Out next month (Sept. 2), “El Deafo” is the author and illustrator’s true story of coping with a hearing impairment while dealing with being the new kid at school. Even when going through the ups and downs of getting a new hearing aid, Cece is more focused on what any kid at that age wants: finding friends and being accepted. Its poignant story is one people of all ages can learn from.

Rob Brydon’s Michael Caine is better than yours Interview. The “Trip to Italy star says real dinners with Steve Coogan are more subdued.
of themselves, bickering and riffing while eating scrumptious food. ‘The Trip’ is so English. Do you think Americans have trouble picking up on some of it?
Four years ago most Americans didn’t know British superstar comic actors Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan by name or face. Then a video clip of them doing competing impressions of Michael Caine — from their TV show “The Trip, in which they went on a restaurant tour of England — went viral. The show was cut down to a movie in America, and the same thing has happened with their follow-up, “The Trip to Italy. The two again play versions
When we did the first one, in England some people said, “Well, we like it, but it won’t go down in America. They don’t know the history of these two guys. But I’ve sat at screenings in New York and LA, and people just react to it. You don’t need to know the ins and outs. If you do you’ll get a little more out of it. But we have a classical sort of relationship. It’s pretty universal. You two use your names and bits of your lives, but not all of it is truthful. What’s it like playing a version of yourself? It’s a real mishmash. You’re having your cake and eating it. In real life, we wouldn’t have these fractious, hostile exchanges. And
there wouldn’t be all the impressions. When you’re improvising for the film, you’re looking for conflict and humor and drama. The actual meals wouldn’t be that interesting. It would just be two middleaged men being pleasant with each other. Coogan’s screen persona is such a needy monster. But if you talk to him in real life he can be quite nice and friendly.

‘Mad Max’ Netix Instant This year’s Comic-Con went out on a high, courtesy of a reliably high-octane teaser for next summer’s reboot of “Mad Max.â€? Thankfully, the blockbuster, subtitled “Fury Road,â€? will be directed by original director George Miller. In fact, those original ďŹ lms still hold up even by today’s hyper-cutting action standards. And luckily, they’re new to Netix Instant. Amazingly, the 1979 dystopian original — in which Mel Gibson’s Australian family man transforms into a hot-headed nomad — only saw a limited release in the U.S. (Its even better sequel, called “Mad Max 2â€? everywhere else, had to be titled “The Road Warriorâ€? here, because few knew who Mad Max was.) Yet it had a profound eect on the way action cinema is made. George Miller’s style was, for the time, uncommonly kinetic. He favors fast cuts but they’re not just about speed: Every image is bold, the camera often pushing uncomfortably close

Getting serious
In this ďŹ lm, you’re auditioning to be in Michael Mann’s next ďŹ lm. Sadly, you’re not in ‘Blackhat,’ his actual next ďŹ lm. The irony of the Michael Mann story line was that while that was happening, I got a call from my agent saying he needed me to go on tape for this big American movie. I thought, “This is great. This is destiny, isn’t it?â€? So I put myself on tape, and the message came back that that they really liked it and they wanted to see more. And Steve, like in the ďŹ lm, he helped me do the tape. I thought, “This was meant to be.â€? And then I didn’t get it. [Laughs] MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
Rob Brydon reunites with Steve Coogan for food and impressions in “The Trip to Italy. / IFC FILMS
Did he make you think that? That’s interesting. You’ve known each other for many years, but it wasn’t until ‘Tristram Shandy’ in 2006 that you hit on this competitive on-screen chemistry. It all started because I was a huge fan of his. I was his biggest fan. I was a voice-over artist who really wanted to do character comedy. He started as a voice-over artist, too, so I
looked at him as someone who’s on the path I wanted to go on. After I met him it took awhile for us to have a friendship, because, to start with, I was just a big fan. ‘The Trip to Italy’ can’t be just you two riďŹƒng and a crew ďŹ lming it. How much of it is structured? Quite often we’ll be talking with the crew and eating and we’ll say something, and we’ll say,
matt.prigge@metro.us
Are there times where you feel the other way — that you have this
great bit and no one’s getting it? There are loads of moments in “The Trip that I think are great and nobody ever picks up on. In this one, there’s a bit at a restaurant where Steve takes a mouthful of food and goes, “Oh, God. And I said, “Oh, not good? I think that’s hilarious. I find that endlessly funny. And I think I’ve only witnessed that being laughed at once.
merits revisits. One of his most charismatic turns was in Paul Thomas Anderson’s enigmatic ‘The Master,’ with the late actor playing an L. Ron Hubbardesque cult leader who ďŹ nds himself mystiďŹ ed by a feral,
untameable and very horny veteran (Joaquin Phoenix). The ďŹ lm rewards repeated viewings, but not because the plot is hard to follow (it isn’t). Its intent isn’t always clear, and that mystery is what makes it strong.
“Ooh, let’s do that one tomorrow. Sometimes we’ll say something to each other that we don’t think is interesting or funny, and Michael will say, “We’ll use that tomorrow. Sometimes it comes really easy, other times less so. Experience teaches you to wait and be patient and something will come.

There’s a growing craft beer scene
There are plenty of places to get large, refreshing, traditional German beers. And there’s the longtime Hamburg-brewed Astra — a staple of any German alehouse. But there’s also the Ratsherrn Braurei in Sternschanze, a brewery that has been trying to bring a pioneering beer country into the modern day. They even have an American master brewer.

Hamburg: It’s cooler than you thought Guten tag! One of Europe’s largest cities has enough room for wealth and a red-light district. Hamburg isn’t exactly an underdog of a destination, but it can seem that way; it doesn’t have the cool reputation that Berlin has. But it has money. The city is home to the most millionaires in Germany. It’s a business and a journalism hub; Der Spiegel calls it home. It has the second biggest port in Europe (after Rotterdam), making it an international trading hot spot. So it’s doing just fine. Of course, those traits don’t make Hamburg seem homey, or even tourist-friendly — yet it’s both. It’s the largest city in

Europe that’s not a capital, meaning there is plenty of room for everyone and everything. Strolling or biking from one neighborhood to another can feel like embarking on an epic journey as you take in landscapes as diverse as scenic harbors, rich shopping districts and gritty apartments. If Berlin is akin to New York City, then Hamburg is Philadelphia, a more affordable city with its own unique charm. (Berlin is easily accessible via a two-hour Eurorail ride.) You won’t see many Rich Uncle Pennybags types strolling around the city; you see young people. Many of the city’s artisttypes live in Sternschanze, which is filled with cafes, bars, green markets and record shops, some specializing in Hamburg-only music. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

The Reeperbahn is a stretch of Hamburg’s St. Pauli neighborhood that has long been a thriving red-light district. It’s right by the port, and historically, it was where sailors from around the world came to have fun. Even today, the street teems with women posing in windows — prostitution is legal — and sex shops that might shock puritanical Americans. One store sells a certain sex toy in the shape of the Eiel Tower.
Hamburger helper?
Who put a bun around this creation is a mystery, but some Hamburg restaurants — including the Oberhafen-Kantine near Hafencity, situated in a leaning building — still serve an early version of this: the “rundstuck warm, which piles vegetables and gravy on top of a round patty.
Hamburg is also possibly where the hamburger was invented. Though history has proved vague on the modern burger’s origins, it almost assuredly has roots in the “Hamburg steak — a patty of minced beef created in the 19th century.

How to talk to your kids about bullying Whether you’re sending a child off to school for the first time or raising a high schooler, it’s never too early — or too late — to talk about bullying. Bullying isn’t always in-your-face. Subtle, mean remarks or being intentionally left out count, too. / MONKEY BUSINESS IMAGES

By Rich Bergman and illustrated by Alexander Yogi Introducing the concept of bullying via this animal story is a good way to ease into the topic. In the book, a platypus named Rocco wants more than anything for the ducks, otters and beavers to like him, but they see him as an outsider. Rocco wins them over eventually through his kind actions and by not stooping to their level. Use this book to help your preschooler learn that differences should be celebrated. Then, highlight some things that make him or her special.
‘Jake Drake, Bully Buster’ By Andrew Clements This story about how a kid goes from being a bully’s favorite target to taking him down has a “Revenge of the Nerds” feel to it that kids will love. It shows them what to do if they’re bullied and how to fight back without turning into bullies themselves. When you’re done reading the book together, start a conversation about what your son or daughter has seen in his or her school or ask if there’s anything he or she is worried about experiencing. This way, kids will know it’s safe to come to you with their fears even if it isn’t right this very second; one conversation opens the door.

‘Runt’ By Nora Raleigh Baskin Popular culture typically paints one person as a bully and one person as a victim, but what makes this novel so relatable is that it explores the gray areas in between. By incorporating online tactics and things that happen at school but are too subtle to be caught by teachers, it reveals a side of bullying that isn’t normally seen — and the consequences of actions both large and small. This book teaches kids that being complacent can be a form of bullying and that he or she should always stand up for what’s right. It’s also good for kids who are getting bullied to know they aren’t alone and it can and should end.

By Paige Rawl with Ali Benjamin This moving memoir not only puts the effects of bullying into perspective for teens but also educates about HIV. While a student, Paige Rawl was bullied so much about her HIV-positive
status that she stopped going to school and even attempted to take her own life. It’s a powerful story about how hurtful words and rumors can be,
and also how to pick yourself up and become stronger than your tormentors. Reading this firstperson account will stay with your teen long after finishing the book. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

Re: ‘Israel can’t justify its actions’ (Metro, Aug. 11) To letter writer William Gore, Jr.: before condemning Israel for its missile attacks, you should ensure that they are murdering “innocent” children. I have seen many pictures of 9- and 10-year-olds holding weapons, which doesn’t seem so innocent to me. In addition, many women are strapped with explosives to their chests. So it would seem that the women and children are not so innocent there. Israel has been a democracy for 66 years. The Palestinians have had that much time to establish a presence in the political system and did not.
Congress adjourning and leaving Washington for a five-week recess is actually great news. Elected officials on a bipartisan basis routinely pass legislation to increase spending, taxes, borrowing and deficits. They also pass bills benefiting their “pay for play” contributors, funding pork-barrel member items along with new rules and regulations infringing on our day-to-day lives. When Congress is not working, it can’t cause mischief.
Libra | Sept. 23-Oct. 22. Look at your career options. Send out your résumé or set up an interview. Don’t rule out marketing yourself. Sudoku: Easy and hard

Oden charged with felony Former No. 1 overall pick Greg Oden was charged with felony battery for punching his ex-girlfriend in the face, according to Indiana police. He was also charged with two counts of misdemeanor battery. Oden, who was the top pick ahead of Kevin Durant in 2007, was arrested last Thursday and spent a night in jail. He played with Miami last season.
NFL. The Jets are severely limited at cornerback due to multiple injuries.
The Jets took a double blow to their secondary on Sunday when Dexter McDougle and Dee Milliner both had to be helped off the field with injuries. The news on McDougle, a third-round pick out of Maryland this year, was immediately bad. He tore his left ACL and will miss the entire 2014 season. Milliner, who is a starter despite an inconsistent rookie year, reportedly suf-

fered a high ankle sprain. Milliner said he hopes to be ready for Week 1, but that seems unlikely considering the swelling was still so bad Monday he couldn’t undergo an MRI. Even corner Dimitri Patterson, who was burned repeatedly by the Colts last week, sat out Sunday and Monday with a foot injury. At this stage in the game, a few weeks into training camp, there aren’t many options to fortify a hurting secondary, but Metro takes a look at a handful of options.

Dunta Robinson Granted Robinson was a major bust for the Chiefs last season, who signed him to a three-year, $13.7 million deal, but you’re not going to get a stud at this point. If he can reclaim some the form that made him a starting cornerback for nine years with Houston and Atlanta maybe you have something. It was only two years ago that he had 80 tackles, 1 1/2 sacks and two forced turnovers.

Asante Samuel
Chris Houston
The Jets have reportedly already inquired about Samuel, who is a threetime All-Pro. But the same Daily News report indicates the Jets are unlikely to sign the 33-year-old veteran, who last played for the Falcons. He was relegated to just 11 games and part-time duty in 2013, but he did have two forced turnovers (one fumble, one interception). He’s well past his prime, but probably the best option nonetheless.
One of the younger names on this list, at 29 years old, Houston was cut by the Lions in June. He’d been signed to a five-year deal in 2013, but as non-guaranteed deals often go, he was cut after just one season. Detroit needed to free up cap space, and with Houston coming off left big toe surgery, he was the one to go. Toe surgery for a corner is scary, but he told SB Nation he’d be back to full strength by August or September.

Pierre-Paul out to prove he’s better than ever Watch online
Find video and recap of last night’s Yankees-Orioles game at: Metro.us/sports.
It’s been a long time since Jason Pierre-Paul was a dominant defensive end in the NFL — three years to be exact. But Pierre-Paul doesn’t just expect to return to the form which saw him post 16 1/2 sacks in 2011, he expects to surpass it. “I’m trying to be better than that 2011-2012 year,” Pierre-Paul said Monday. “Each year is a year for you to get better, so that’s what I’m trying to do.”
When met with incredulity, Pierre-Paul didn’t back down, saying he could be “a lot” better. And agreed he could “maybe” threaten former Giants defensive end Michael Strahan’s record of 22 1/2. “Every day is a learning process, still learning the game even more and more,” Pierre-Paul said. “You never can stop learning.” Pierre-Paul dealt with multiple injuries over the past two years, none more crippling than a back injury in 2012 which eventually led to offseason surgery to remove a herniated disc.

Jabari Greer
The veteran is still on the market, and he told ESPN just last week he is not calling it quits. The 32-year-old spent the last five seasons in New Orleans, and Jets fans remember his tenure with Buffalo before that. The biggest reason Greer hasn’t signed, and the biggest reason the Jets may JABARI GREER HAS PLAYED pass, is that he tore his 10 YEARS IN THE NFL BUT ACL and PCL last season IS COMING OFF KNEE SURGERY. and is just 10 months removed from the injury. He is ready to get back on the field, but he may not be 100 percent. Inside options A surprise contender for the cornerback position emerged Monday when the Jets shifted safety Antonio Allen to the outside.
DESPITE INJURY CONCERNS, HOUSTON IS PROBABLY WORTH WORKING OUT.
•
“He’s just a baller,” head coach Rex Ryan said. “When he was in college, the kid made a zillion plays.”
•
Allen made two interceptions in practice Monday, but Ryan would only say “we’ll see” when asked if the move was permanent.

Jason Pierre-Paul’s total number of career sacks in the three years besides 2011 (13), are fewer than that one season-best (16 1/2).
And he was shut down early last season due to a shoulder injury. “Nobody wants to be injured,” he said. “It comes with the game; you never know when you’re going to be injured. You have to fight through it. You go out there and play.” MARK OSBORNE

JACOB DEGROM GETTY IMAGES
DeGrom put on DL with tendinitis The Mets’ newest pitching sensation is going on the DL — but the team is still breathing a sigh of relief. Jacob deGrom, who won NL Rookie of the Month in July, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis after undergoing an MRI Monday. He was scratched from his most recent scheduled start and sent back to New York for testing. “I’m very relieved,” manager Terry Collins said. “Actually, that’s about as good as you could hope for, if that was all it’s going to be. We’ll give him a little downtime to get some energy and some strength back in his arm and be ready for the last month.” The team has called up Rafael Montero (0-2, 5.40 ERA), who will start on Tuesday against Washington. DeGrom is expected to miss two more starts. METRO By the numbers

MLB. Michael Pineda scheduled to return to Yankees’ rotation Michael Pineda is heading back to the starting rotation, and the Yankees are wasting no time throwing him right into critical games. Pineda will make his first start since April 23 against AL East rival Baltimore on Wednesday. “We feel he’s ready now,” manager Joe Girardi said. “It’s nice. This is a guy who threw very well before he went on the DL, and it’d be nice to have him back. I feel good about him taking the mound. We need him to pitch well these last seven weeks or whatever we have left.’’ Pineda was 2-2 with a 1.83 ERA in four starts before hitting the DL with a strained lat muscle. Of course, Pineda originally hurt himself while suspended 10 games for flagrantly using pine tar on his neck during the April 23 start in Boston. “I know I make a mistake, so I learned
