Despite the gridlock, incessant honking and other “Masshole” moves, motorists traveling along busy state roadways over the weekend may have noticed a little less road rage thanks to signs displaying a simple yet constructive message: “Keep Calm and Drive On.” More than 500 Massachusetts motorists offered their snappiest safety phrases in a first-of-its-kind MassDOT contest that sought creative mes-
sages on how to deter road rage and distracted driving while encouraging seat belt use. Transportation authorities last week announced the three winning #DOTspeak phrases after an overwhelming response on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and email since the contest launched in June. In the end, “Keep Calm and Drive On,” “Put down the phone, the LOLs and OMGs can wait” and “Make yah Ma proud, wear yah seat belt” were selected for their brevity and originality. “We received some very creative, thoughtful and funny message suggestions,” said MassDOT CEO Richard Davey. “I encourage people to continue to engage with us — you’re our eyes and ears on the road, and we rely on you to help keep the roads safe.” The signs will be displayed

during high traffic weekends on the state’s busiest roadways, including interstates 93, 95, 90 and 91 and routes 3, 6 and 24. Labor Day weekend’s signs will convey the texting warning, while Columbus Day weekend will focus on seat belts. The idea for #DOTspeak followed the viral success of MassDOT’s “Use Yah Blinkah” signs, which went live in May and poked fun at Boston accents. Winners received gift cards. MassDOT Highway Administrator Frank DePaola said the agency may launch a similar contest next year. “I think humor catches people’s attention, especially when it comes to road rage,” said. “If it’s a funny phrase, people tend to repeat it.” MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

Chinatown. Cops make an arrest after four injured in early morning shooting A Mattapan man is due in court today in connection to a Chinatown shooting that injured four people early Sunday morning. Melvin Smith, 27, faces a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon for allegedly shooting the four victims, who
were between the ages of 22 and 27, around 2:55 a.m. in front of Moon Villa Restaurant on Edinboro Street. Patrol officers said they heard gunshots near the restaurant, then saw a man fleeing the scene. After a brief foot chase, officers caught up with
Smith, and found a firearm. During the pursuit, an officer’s firearm was discharged, but police said “there were no injuries as a result of this discharge.” The victims were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

A former Boston College hockey player and friend of the inspiration behind the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was killed early Saturday after diving from a Nantucket building and drowning in the harbor below. A witness told police that Corey Griffin, 27, dove from a Juice Guys cafe around 2 a.m., then floated to the surface before slipping back under the water. An off-duty lifeguard was called to the scene and made several dives before pulling Griffin from the harbor floor. Police administered CPR, but Griffin was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead at 3 a.m. An investigation is underway. Griffin’s death came just hours after he told his father he raised $100,000 to fight ALS in honor of his friend, Peter Frates, whose struggle with the disease sparked the viral Ice Bucket Challenge. Frates, a former Boston College baseball player, was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, in 2012. The ALS Association said Sunday that the challenge has led to $13.3 million more in donations than the organization received during the same time last year, with donations coming from existing donors and 259,505 new donors. “Team FrateTrain lost a good friend today, Corey Griffin,” Frates wrote on his Facebook page Sunday. “Helping out was nothing new for Griff. He held his own event for me back in 2012, just a few months after diagnosis. He worked his butt off these last few weeks for ALS. We texted everyday, planning and scheming ways to raise funds and plan events.” MORGAN ROUSSEAU

Amish abduction
Abducted Amish sisters were sexually abused: New York Times Two Amish sisters, whose abduction led to a frantic search in northern New York, were sexually abused by their captors, the New York Times reported. The girls, ages 12 and 7, were kidnapped on Wednesday from a family farm stand some 10 miles from New York’s border with Canada. They were released Thursday. Police have charged two suspects, Stephen Howells II, 39, and Nicole Vaisey, 25, with two counts each of first-degree kidnapping. In remarks to the New York Times late on Saturday, St. Lawrence County District Attorney Mary Rain said the girls had suffered sexual abuse during their captivity at Howells’ home in Hermon, New York. She did not elaborate or give further details. REUTERS

Police used smoke and teargas to disperse the crowd, a State Highway Patrol spokesman said. A person was also shot and critically wounded during the night. Patrol Captain Ron Johnson, entrusted by the governor with restoring order, told hundreds of people gathered at a local church for a rally that he was committed to protecting their right to protest. “I’m sorry,” Johnson, who is black, told Brown’s family during remarks that prompted repeated standing ovations. “My heart is heavy.” The rally was led by civil rights activist Al Sharpton. J-Law dating Paltrow’s husband?
Jennifer Lawrence is reportedly dating Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, according to E! News. They’ve apparently been spending time together since June — even though Martin is still technically married to Gwyneth Paltrow. (Coldplay does have a song on the “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” soundtrack, if you enjoy a shred of plausibility with your gossip.) J-Law, baby, listen: I know you recently re-broke up with Nicholas Hoult and all, but if your only standards for a boyfriend are tall, British and famous, I could’ve offered you plenty of other options. Like, I don’t know, Peter Mayhew, the guy who plays Chewbacca? I hear he’s a very generous lover.
FILM Kelsey Grammer is one of several high-profile additions to the “Expendables” franchise for its third outing, and even he understands people might find his inclusion in the ’80s throwback testosterone-fest something of a head-scratcher. But, as Grammer tells us, he’s actually tougher than people think. “I’m working at the gym. I’m punching people in the streets,” he jokes. “All those punch videos you’ve been seeing? That’s me.” This is an interesting choice for you, this franchise. What was your reaction when they first approached you? Actually they didn’t approach me. I had heard there was a role available in “The Expendables.” I didn’t know what it was, I didn’t know how it was going to play out or what the requirements were, but I knew if I pushed a little bit, maybe their imaginations would say, “Oh. Kelsey Grammer. OK, that’s a surprise.” I’m a lot tougher than people think I am. If you know anything about my personal life, you’ll realize that. [Laughs] Is doing an action role something you’ve been looking to do? Oh, I’d love to, I’d love to do
Q&A KELSEY GRAMMER: ACTION STAR? it. And who knows, it may happen, it may not. But being in this film was a complete joy for me. And Bonaparte is a terrific character. He’s just a guy who used to be in some kind of mercenary world and stepped away and is a procurer, basically, now. He puts together teams and he’s been making some pretty good money at it. It was really fun to play, and we kind of just hit on this sort of Hemingway, broad-shouldered kind of guy
Big vs. small screen
How does the breakdown of divisions between the film and TV worlds look from the perspective of someone who’s been so successful on TV? In England, you can go from television to film to stage seamlessly. Nobody has an issue. In America, we tend to put people in these pockets. It was always my dream that I would break the bonds of “Frasier” at some point and have a chance to play some other roles. I think “Boss” helped that, and people went, “Oh wow, I had no idea.” Because they never do. So you have to show them. I did another comedy in England in the spring called “Breaking the Bank” that’s about a British guy, and of course everybody there said, “I had no idea he was British!” [Laughs] Well, I’m not. I’m an actor. So that’s where we are, we’re still trying to convince people that actors are actors, and we’ll be OK.
who is in the background now a little bit. But my hope is if we do another one, Bonaparte gets to don the military motley. [Laughs] So to speak. That Hemingway-esque, lifeon-the-road type seems fun. Yeah, [he’s the guy] who lives big, has lived a big life — and believes in things that some of us believe in still about courage and about taking a stand, being in the fight. I’m one of those guys. A man’s man.

An 11-year-old boy was recently treated at a San Diego hospital after he developed a rash from an iPad. Containing the outbreak. Ebola not a threat to U.S. Though the worst outbreak of Ebola since its detection in the 1970s is not yet contained, and over 1,000 have died, there’s reason to be hopeful. There is no confirmed cure for the disease, but Dr. Kent Brantly, one of two medical missionaries who underwent an experimental treatment this month after becoming infected, released a statement last week saying that he is “recovering in every way. The World Health Organization has endorsed the use of experimental drugs, though supplies are limited. College is a time of exploration and independence — or it would be, if many of this generation’s helicopter parents would let it be. Generations ago, a weekly phone call or email was enough for most families. But in this age of smartphones, parents expect their kids to be reachable at all times. Here’s what can you do to stay close with your parents while still having your space:
Talk to your own professors
Set a schedule Before you head off to school, sit down with your family and propose a time for a weekly phone or Skype date. That way, they’ll know to expect to hear from you at, say, 7 p.m. on Sundays. They can save all of the week’s news until then.

Having your mother call the Dean’s Office after a bad midterm grade will endear you to no one. Anyone who has ever had an honest chat with a professor knows that there is nothing that irritates them more than explaining bad grades or class policies to parents. Having a hard time in class? Schedule an appointment with your instructor during office hours or find out how you can get a tutor. Letting your parents take the reins could even hurt you when it’s time to ask for letters of recommendation.
Circle Parents Day on the calendar Most schools have a designated visiting weekend for parents during the fall semester. Encourage your family to come and promise that you’ll show them all of your favorite campus haunts and introduce them to some of your friends during the visit.

PLANNING YOUR NEXT MOVE? NEGOTIATE There’s a point in every career where an employee is going to have to negotiate either a job offer or a raise for the first time. Because most people aren’t born negotiators, many workers end up making only a fraction of what they are worth. While some people are afraid to negotiate their salary, it is actually a sign of professionalism — because it shows that you’re serious, intelligent and value your expertise. Here are my top negotiation tips:
Do your due diligence

Sites like Salary.com and PayScale.com are great ways to ďŹ nd out the salary range of a particular position. Use data to justify the increase

those who do? The answer, according to new research, is yes. A new study out of Sweden found that people who returned from vacation were not only happier and more relaxed when they returned back home, but that happiness also spread to others, creating a wave of joy, if you will. The researchers examined the monthly antidepressant usage of Swedes between 1993 and 2005. They found that the number of prescriptions exponentially dropped when more people were on vacation. It should be noted that here in the United States, there is no national vacation policy, making it the only developed country in the world without such a mandate. LAKSHMI GANDHI

Bee proactive in banning pesticides
Police reaction to assembly is over the top
of the most critical steps they can take is to restrict the use of pesticides called neonicotinoids, a driving force in bee declines. Bayer, Syngenta, Monsanto and the rest of the pesticide industry will continue to try and confuse the science and the discussion about what needs to be done, but the reality is that we can’t afford to wait around while these pesticides further contaminate our air, water and soil and contribute to an untenable burden for bees, beekeepers and our agricultural economy.
In honor of Honey Bee Day, which was Saturday, we should honor pollinators critical to our food system by urging President Obama and his agencies to create the best protections possible for the nation’s bees. In the next few months, a joint task force led by Obama’s EPA and USDA will release a plan of action for addressing bee declines. One

Revolution still in playoff mix despite slump MLS. The Revs have been in a funk all summer, but there is optimism for a late-season surge. The dog days of summer have not been kind to the Revolution as the club is winless thus far in August and has gone just 1-7-1 since the Fourth of July. Despite their struggles, however, the Revs (8-12-3, 27 points) are still very much in playoff contention in the Eastern Conference as they sit just a point behind the

The Revs certainly need to take care of business this coming Saturday (7:30 p.m., CSNNE) at Gillette Stadium when they will host Chivas USA — the basement dwellers of the Western Conference at 6-11-6 this season. New England has been much better at home than on the road this season as it has scored 17 goals at Gillette but only 13 on foreign turf. goal differential of minus-13. The reasons for the Revs’ struggles of late have more to do with offensive futility than a leaky defense and weak goaltending. Keeper Bobby Shuttleworth has only let one game get away from him this summer — a 5-1 loss in Carson, California to the Galaxy. Not counting the July 16 blowout loss, Shuttleworth had allowed just 1.42 goals per game since the beginning of July. The offense has scored two or more goals just once since July 4, not surprisingly their only victory — a 3-0 blanking of Colorado in Foxboro on July 30.
