Market Basket customers hungry as resolution nears Chelsea. Aisles remain barely stocked as tensions within the company entered its fifth week. After more than a month of passionate picketing and a tedious behind-the-scenes standoff, an end to the Market Basket saga may be within reach. Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick joined forces with New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan late Sunday night to help broker a deal between ousted CEO Arthur T. Demoulas and the company’s board of directors, helmed by his cousin and apparent archnemesis Arthur S. Demoulas. “The parties have made real progress on the terms of the sale and operating control of the company, and the governors are encouraged that a resolution may be within reach,” Heather Nichols, a spokeswoman for Patrick, said in an email Monday. Protests continued on Friday despite a deadline for picketing employees, who are loyal to Arthur T., to return to work or risk losing their jobs. Monday, as the company entered its fifth week of unrest, there were no visible signs that things were on the upswing, but shoppers and workers were hopeful. “The regular employees are back to work, the part-timers are not,” said William Caraballo, a merchandising manager at the Chelsea Market Basket. “We’re just doing the best we can. Everybody is still out.” Caraballo said customers

Benitez pushed a cart through the store’s deserted aisles yesterday, and spoke of her loyalty to the chain and her disappointment with the higher ups. “I think that it’s kind of pathetic that they’re doing this back and forth thing,” Benitez said. “I think it’s time they come to a deal and just settle it because the customers are the ones who are suffering.” Like many Market Basket customers, Benitez said she is drawn to the store’s low prices and food selection. “I’ve been to PriceRite, and I don’t like their food; it rots in two days,” she said. “The Spanish people eat a lot of different things, and the only place you can find it is here. I just wish they’d make up their minds and settle it and stop being so immature.” As of Monday much of the store’s regular food items were nowhere to be seen, a problem that will likely only be worsened with Boston Sword & Tuna’s decision to end its decade-long relationship with the embattled grocer. The fish vendor’s CEO, Tim Malley, released a letter on Facebook on Monday announcing the dissolution, which he blamed on problems with Market Basket management. “We think the time has nearly run out for saving this great institution and all those who depend on it,” Malley said. Nantucket. Man’s fatal dive ruled as accidental The 27-year-old former Boston College hockey player who died on Nantucket Island this weekend after raising $100,000 to fight ALS accidentally drowned, the state medical examiner’s office said on Monday. Authorities did not elaborate on what might have caused Corey Griffin to drown, or whether he had suffered other injuries. Police said Griffin dove into the water from the “Juice Guys” building on Straight Wharf around 2 a.m. Saturday, floated to the surface and then sank.
Griffin was a friend of Pete Frates, whose ALS diagnosis inspired the viral Ice Bucket Challenge to raise money for the The ALS Association. Frates was one of many to offer sympathy in the wake of Griffin’s untimely death, saying on Facebook: “Helping out was nothing new for Griff. He held his own event for me back in 2012, just a few months after diagnosis. He worked his butt off these last few weeks for ALS. We texted every day, planning and scheming ways to raise funds and plan events.” GLOBE

Autopsy shows police officer shot Brown six times
Painful Varicose Veins?
Now is the time to take care of it! Varicose veins are MORE than just a cosmetic problem. They can also be a warning sign of a condition called Venous Insufficiency that kills over half a million people every year.

Ferguson. The Brown family and protesters have called for the shooting officer’s arrest for days. An unarmed black teenager whose killing by a white police officer has set off a week of protests and rioting in Ferguson, Missouri, was struck by at least six bullets, a lawyer for the deceased’s family said on Monday. The path of one bullet indicates 18-year-old Michael Brown may have been lowering his head in surrender when the fatal shot hit, said Daryl Parks,
the family’s lawyer. Many details surrounding the shooting remain unclear, and federal and local officials have yet to release their own autopsy report. Parks said the autopsy results clearly showed that the police officer who killed Brown should be arrested. He presented the results at a press conference showing that one bullet hit Brown in the “very top of his head” and another that struck his head exited near his eye. Kurds claim capture of strategic dam Iraqi Kurdish forces said they recaptured Iraq’s biggest dam from Islamist militants on Monday, as the United States launched air strikes to secure what has become a vital strategic objective in fighting that threatens to break up the country. U.S. fighter, bomber and drone aircraft took part in the strikes on Islamic State positions near the dam, the Pentagon said. At first glance. The psychology behind designing a cover goes deeper than you may think. The next time you’re casually perusing your local bookstore and a book catches your eye, chances are you can thank Peter Mendelsund. He’s designed sleeves for everything from “Ulysses to “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Now, 300 of his top designs are showcased in his new book, “Cover. Even if a book jacket seems decorative, Mendel-

Q&A
On ‘What We See When We Read’ Have celebrities played a role in readers’ visualizations? In terms of movie adaptations, definitely. I think whenever an adaptation is made of a book, being able to see something in the ocular sense crowds out all the other [visualizations of characters] you might imagine until you forget, which sometimes takes years. Sometimes it never happens. I read “Harry Potterâ€? with my kids, and there’s no way I’m getting those [actors] out of my brain. Does race play a part in how people visualize characters? We tend to colonize books with what we’re familiar with and make characters we can identify with, and we identify with those who are most similar to us. ‌ It may also have to do with what you’re reading as well. We tend to read books that speak to our particular little daily wicks. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

Introduction. Meet a former child actor who’s now playing a football titan in “When the Game Stands Tall.”
He had no history with football “I grew up in Vancouver, Canada, so I basically played every sport but football. When I came to New Orleans to film this movie, I didn’t know a thing about it; I basically learned it from scratch. I had to learn about it as quickly as possible. Now I’m in love with the sport.”
Did he get good in real life? “I think I could hold my own. Put me in front of the New England Patriots, though, and I wouldn’t stand a chance.”
Doing his own stunts “I wanted to do as much as I could on the field, to make it look as real as possible. There were times when it was strenuous. You get your bruises here and there.”
Shooting football every day “Physically, this was the hardest movie I’ve ever done. We were in New
Orleans shooting football every day. It was hot and exhausting. But then you go behind the camera and see what movie you’re making, and you see how amazing it looks. This is going to be the best football anyone’s seen in a film. Football is the star of this movie.”
On having noted movie bad guy Clancy Brown play his scary dad “He is one of the sweetest guys I’ve ever met, but he is terrifying when you’re filming a scene with him. I love working with actors who get really physical and try to make it as real as possible. He had no problem doing that with me. We had a great bond that way.”
It’s all about the story “It’s great when you can do a movie and get a workout at the same time. But what drew me to the project was the story. I’d never read anything like it. I did ‘Lone Survivor,’ which was really action-packed. But there, too, it wasn’t that it was a physically demanding role. I don’t want to do some cheesy thing because it has action. I want to care about the story.”

The adaptation of the young adult novel “The Giver” has been a long time coming. Star Jeff Bridges optioned the rights for it 18 years ago, but it took a long time to get all the pieces in place. Author Lois Lowry says she doesn’t mind, though: “Oddly, if they had been able to do it 18 years ago, it wouldn’t have been as good. Jeff was too young to play the role and now he’s terrific in it.” Lowry called Bridges’ bond with star Brenton Thwaites “the closest” element in the film to how she imagined it would be when she first wrote the book. One change she likes? The greater role played by Meryl Streep’s character, one of the authority figures called “Elders” who clashes with Bridges’ Giver charac-
ter. “She’s so good, and it added the element of conflict between Jeff and Meryl’s characters, which is not in the book, so it’s a whole other level to the movie that I think works very well,” says Lowry. There are a few other changes, but Lowry says director Phillip Noyce often came to her with questions about the world of “The Giver,” and at least one of her recommendations ended up in the film. He asked how the kids’ rooms would be decorated, and Lowry’s suggestion of a very practical periodic table of the elements poster appears in Jonah’s little sister’s room. The other change she made? While watching the editor at work, she voiced her disapproval of a line, and the next time she saw the scene, it was gone. “It had the phrase ‘swirling vortex’ in it,” she says, laughing. “I thought that was a horrible phrase.” LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld lisa.weidenfeld@metro.us
Censorship
Hitting close to home The book and the movie focus on the dangers of censorship, a subject Lowry says she’s familiar with: Before she wrote “The Giver,” she’d dealt LOIS LOWRY with censorship GETTY IMAGES challenges. Despite that, she says people who censor books have good
intentions: “They want to protect their children.” It’s a slippery slope, though. Once “bad” things are taken out of books, good things disappear, too. “If you ... have no pain, no anguish in your lives anymore, you also lose art and music. All of those things that arise out of anguish, it’s all gone,” she says.

VILLAGE VISITS
Vuadomo is the smallest but most spectacular of the three villages — don’t miss the hike to its secluded waterfall. / JANE BORDEN
Fiji. Island life here has changed little — and travelers are invited to enjoy the tranquility in a different way than you might expect. Most native Fijians still live in villages, the kind led by chiefs, dotted by open-air homes and traipsed by roving bands of giggling children. And they welcome visitors. The South Pacific nation of 322 islands (106 inhabited) — once infamous for cannibalizing vanquished warriors and uninformed missionaries — is now celebrated for its hospitality. When we visited, a man hauling freshly harvested sugarcane stopped us on a rural road and wanted to share a chunk of his harvest. As happy as they are to have you, however, you can’t just show up. Certain customs apply, and gifts are exchanged before entry is gained. But your resort, hotel or hostel will have a relationship with area villages and help you navigate a visit. Here are the three communities that we found quite welcoming.
Getting there
•
Fiji Airways offers direct flights to Nadi International Airport as well as domestic flights to most Fijian cities, including Savusavu just down the road from Koro Sun, and Suva near Nanuku.
•
Island Hoppers puddle-jump to the Yasawa airstrip as well as Nanuku’s private airstrip.
•
Pacific Destinationz provides reliable ground transport on the two large islands.

Directions to this village, from what we gathered: After you pass the wild horses, take a left, drive through a shallow creek and then you’ll see it nestled in the rainforest canopy. This was the most spectacular of the villages we visited as well as the smallest, with only 10 homes. The chief welcomed our guide, a staff member at Koro Sun Resort & Rainforest Spa (www .korosunresort.com), and this reporter into his home to accept our cava offering.
Then we wandered past the worn lali (a drum used for announcements) and through the one-room church before hiking to a towering waterfall that gushes cool water into a swimming hole. Bring your swimsuit.
Nakorovu, Viti Levu near the Coral Coast When the van pulled up, children began shouting the name “Seru!” Seru, the activities director at Nanuku Resort & Spa Fiji (www.nanukufiji .com) and former trainer of the Fijian rugby team, is the son of Nakorovu’s chief and grew up there. The gang ran alongside us down a muddy path to the banks of a creek, where a woman was catching prawns by hand with her daughter, which she does every day, to sell at a nearby market. (Nanuku can also lead a waterfall hike through Nakorovu.) As the van left the village, we were stopped again, this time by a man offering to crack fresh coconuts for us to drink. We happily obliged. JANE BORDEN @MetroBOS letters@metro.us
Hospitality
Bukama, Yasawa Island On the high ground of this small, narrow island is a small school that also serves a neighboring village. Once a week, guests at Yasawa Island Resort & Spa (www.yasawa .com) are invited to meet the children. First, your guide will present the chief or his representative with cava (a nutty local root with a mild sedative quality), which you may share in a ceremonial drink. Then you’ll head through the generator-powered village, past women weaving mats toward the bright schoolhouse. During our visit, the children took a break to perform several enthusiastic songs.

Back to school. A new look at ways to prevent (and help) college dropouts Tens of millions of adults in the United States are trapped in a vicious cycle: They are saddled with student debt but never earned a college degree. A recent study suggests some ways to keep new students from falling into this “educational limbo,” as well as assist former students in getting out of it. According to a report by the National Student Clearinghouse, 31 million Americans who enrolled in college over the past two decades dropped out without graduating. Of those former students, 4 million — or just over 12 percent — have finished two or more years of higher education. Who are these Americans who have some college but no degree? According to the National Student Clearinghouse, most are over age 24, have dropped out and re-enrolled several times and were enrolled for more than one semester. Doug Shapiro, executive research director of the National Student Clearinghouse, told

Unisex. More colleges are adding gender-neutral bathrooms on campus
WHEN SCHOOLS SAY THEY OFFER STUDENT SUPPORT, WHAT DO THEY MEAN? It could mean a lot of different things. At Bay State College it means we understand that going back to school is a big decision. And, it means we understand your concerns about succeeding at the college level. That’s why, regardless of how you see yourself doing in college, we see an opportunity to help you realize your potential with a community of support. What else does it mean? It means that admissions counselors can show off our campus, answer your questions and guide you through our selection process—even before you apply. It means helping 95 percent of this year’s freshman class receive grants or scholarships that don’t have to be repaid. It means personal success coordinators and a closely-knit student body that can help make America’s biggest college town feel a little more like home. In the classroom, it means a wide variety of Associates and Bachelor’s degree programs in such in-demand fields as healthcare, business, fashion, criminal justice and more. No matter which program you choose, it means learning in small classes from accessible professors with real-world
experience in their field. To fit your schedule, it means making classes available at night or online. As you advance toward your degree, it means having a personal career advancement team. It means helping you write cover letters and resumes, creating mock job interviews and using social media to help you get noticed. It means internships at some of Boston’s best companies and organizations to build working relationships with people that can help you find a full-time position doing what you love. In the end, what does it all mean? It means that at Bay State College, we care as much about your comfort as we do your success. More than 150 campuses across the country have at least one gender-neutral bathroom. / PHOTOS.COM
Northwestern University recently made headlines after announcing that it would be installing two gender-neutral bathrooms in the university’s student center. “These are two gender-open bathrooms where students of any gender can go in and use the restroom and feel safe, regardless of gender expression or gender identity,” Michelle Margulis, the president of the campus LGBT group Rainbow Alliance, told CBS Chicago. The new bathrooms are expected to be ready before the start of the fall semester.

Some students are hoping other colleges will follow Northwestern’s lead. Student activists at California State University, Chico helped pass a student government resolution last year that recommended that one single-stall bathroom in each campus
building be declared genderneutral. Oberlin College has applied a similar policy to its residential halls, designating one restroom in each dorm to be gender-neutral. Over 150 campuses in the United States have genderneutral restrooms, according to the Stonewall Center at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Cambridge College is launching 3 new concentrations beginning in the Fall of 2014. Are you interested in a career in mental health counseling? If so, now is a great time to begin your training. Within this expanding field, there are increasing opportunities to specialize. Cambridge College offers Master’s degrees and Post-Master’s Certificates of Advanced Graduate Studies towards mental health counseling licensure. Beginning in the fall of 2014, several new program concentrations are launching.
Rehabilitation Counseling The aim of the Rehabilitation Counseling concentration is to allow you to become eligible for both Licensure in Mental Health Counseling (LMHC) and to simultaneously be trained in Rehabilitation Counseling, enabling you to pursue national Certification as a Rehabilitation Counselor and to be licensed in the state of Massachusetts as a Rehabilitation Counselor. This program ties together two fields, allowing you to comprehensively serve the needs of individuals returning to work, dealing with intellectual, emotional and/or physical challenges, veterans facing complex mental health and vocational rehabilitation
issues, and those seeking to work in Employee Assistance Programs (EAP).
Pastoral Counseling The new concentration in Pastoral Counseling is offered for those interested in developing the knowledge, skills and training needed to provide effective and informed counseling services from a spiritual and/or faith-based perspective. The program emphasizes inclusive, interfaith dialogue and cooperative and constructive interaction between individuals of different faiths and/or humanistic or spiritual beliefs. Through classroom experiences, you will develop a greater awareness of the role spirituality may play in your clients’ lives, and a better understanding of the impact of spiritual and faith-based perspectives on the counseling process. Throughout the curriculum, you will have opportunities for reflective thought, applied learning, and personal and professional growth.
students interested in exploring Eastern and Western as well as modern and ancient ways of understanding psychology and human behavior. The program aims to integrate knowledge from the study of three levels of experience: body, mind, and spirit. As a student, you will review traditional Western and Eastern ways of understanding, and will examine how different perspectives fit with new information emerging from neuroscience. In creating a holistic learning experience, you will develop an experiential practice (e.g. meditation, tai-chi or yoga) of your own to complement your academic work. Now is the time to join the growing field of mental health counseling. With so many specialties to choose from, Cambridge College can help you create the career you want. Sox have uneven issues to address MLB. Boston’s batting order may look the same next season, but its rotation is far from set for 2015. When the Red Sox traded Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes to the Athletics they received one of the best power-hitting outfielders in the game in Yoenis Cespedes, but there was no question the organization was readying themselves for 2015. With Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz, Mike Napoli and Xander Bogaerts already on board for the foreseeable future, Boston’s batting lineup is pretty well set for next season. “A lot of the guys that are now on this roster will more than likely be on the roster next April, so we’ve got to start building a team that can win,” general manager Ben Cherington said after making four trades on July 31. While the lineup has some certainty, the pitching rotation is in flux. Four of the five starters to open the 2014 season were traded and the only one remaining is Clay Buchholz — who has the secondhighest ERA in baseball this year (minimum 100 innings) at 5.79. Without any clear-cut topof-the-line rotation pitcher, it’s clear the organization will be active in the free agent or trade market in search of that type of pitcher this offseason. The likes of Lester, Max Scherzer, Johnny Cueto and James Shields are the type of players that could be added for the right price. The No. 4 and 5 spots remain in question with the final month and a half of the season playing a major role in who those spots will go to based on the performances of the younger starters currently with the team. Rubby De La Rosa has shown flashes of being a serviceable major league starter having given up one run or less in six of his 12 starts, but

Bradley Jr. demoted, Betts called up Jackie Bradley Jr. had his best offensive day in nearly a month Sunday against the Astros, registering two hits and drawing a walk, but Red Sox management had evidently seen enough of the center fielder’s overall struggles at the plate as they demoted the 24-yearold to Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday. Mookie Betts was called up to the big league club. Bradley Jr. just recently broke an 0-for35 hitless streak and was batting .216 on the season. MATT BURKE

Clay Buchholz has been one of the more inconsistent pitchers in Red Sox history. •
Buchholz won 17 games in 2010 and had a 2.33 ERA in 28 games played that year.
•
The righty went 12-1 and had a 1.74 ERA last season before a shaky 2013 postseason.
•
Buchholz is 5-7 this season with a 5.79 ERA.
he’s also had some bad outings mixed in too where he struggles with his control. Allen Webster has big league stuff, but he’s still trying to find it in the majors as he has a 4.79 ERA in four starts in 2014. Brandon Workman, a mainstay in the bullpen dur-

ing last year’s World Series title run, is another option but he is 1-6 with a 4.45 ERA this season. Current minor leaguers Anthony Ranaudo (2-0 in two big league starts), Matt Barnes and top prospect Henry Owens could also be in the discussion as well.
“A lot of the guys that are now on this roster will more than likely be on the roster next April, so we’ve got to start building a team that can win. ... We’re going to learn a lot more about our young group.” Ben Cherington, Red Sox GM, on the focus of the team for August and September
While the Red Sox are 5667, 14 1/2 games out for first place in the AL East, there is still plenty of reason to tune into games as jobs for 2015 will be won and lost. RYAN HANNABLE @RyanHannable sports@metro.us
Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo missed practice all of last week for undisclosed reasons but he was back in Foxboro for a full-pads session on Monday, according to ESPNBoston.com. Rookie center Bryan Stork, who was also out for a period of time due to an undisclosed injury, also returned. Mayo suffered a season-ending pectoral injury in Week 6 last year against New Orleans. Fanny pack day at Fenway Both NESN and CSN Houston got a chance to interview movie star Matthew McConaughey in the stands at Fenway Park on Sunday, but it was the Texas sports station that got the real dirt on the actor. When asked why he was wearing a “fanny pack,” to the game McConaughey stated, “I’m not afraid of the fanny pack. You just gotta put it on the side to make it look a little [less] nerdy.”
