Last month, Hubway asked Bostonians to show what inspires them to ride the bicycle-sharing system every day by entering their design ideas in the #HubwayEveryday Bike Design Contest. Now, Hubway has narrowed down its five top picks, and the company is asking the public to weigh in on the winning design. Designers were asked to submit their visual design ideas without altering the hardware and functionality of the bike. The five finalist designs include tributes to the Charles River and Boston’s patriotic history as well as an “Everyday Waterbike” honoring the city’s many waterfront attractions. Companies revolutionizing the world

There are millions of companies in the world, but few are truly revolutionary and disruptive. It’s good to know about these fast-growing firms to learn from what they’re doing and what the world loves right now.
More than a billion people use the world’s most popular social networking website. Despite its popularity, Facebook has only just begun monetizing and building out its premium apps. Over the next few years, the company will release an incredible number of tools and changes in functionality that will continue to have an impact on the majority of the Internet-connected world. Uber teaches us that a simple solution to an everyday problem can quickly become worth billions of dollars, as Uber was recently valued at $18 billion. Despite its many critics, Uber’s future is exciting given that it saves and analyzes all of its ride-sharing data and has begun venturing into the delivery business, putting it directly in competition with UPS and

Myths about feminism Few people can spark a heated debate quite like Roxane Gay. Can you like Robin Thicke and still be a feminist? Can you hate “Girls” and be one? Gay’s 100,000 Tumblr followers and 24,800 Twitter followers are eager to hear her thoughts whenever there’s a big moment in popculture and what it means on a deeper level, if it means anything at all. We talk to Gay about setting some things straight.

“I struggle with women who say they are not feminists and don’t need feminism. I think they don’t realize what feminism has made possible in their lives. But we all get to choose how we identify ourselves. I’m going to fight for them anyway.” Gay Myth 1:

Feminists can’t listen to rap or watch ‘The Bachelor’
One of the reasons Gay decided to write her book is to tell women to give themselves a break. “It’s important to have high standards, but it’s also important to recognize our humanity and that sometimes we’re not going to get it right,” she says. “We can be feminists and we can be imperfect in our feminism. I think what matters is intention.”
Go out. Get moving.
Have fun together.
Roxane Gay just released her book, “Bad Feminist,” a collection of essays about feminism and pop culture. / JAY GRABIEC Myth 2:
Myth 3:
There’s nothing left for feminists to fight for
Feminists are automatic role models
Gay says one of the reasons she thinks many young women are hesitant to call themselves feminists is because they think we’ve reached a point where men and women are equal. “We’re no longer thinking the struggle is real because we’re no longer fighting for literacy or the right to vote,” she explains. “The fights are different but equally important.”
Gay may have a big following, but she insists that she is not a role model, because everyone is human and bound to mess up. Instead, she urges people to keep feminism simple. Believing that men and women are equals and should be treated as such but also spending Saturday night grinding with guys to degrading music is imperfect feminism, and that’s perfectly OK.

Save money
Buy gently worn back-to-school clothes with Kidizen You know how fast kids outgrow their clothes; sometimes they only wear something a few times before it’s too snug. Knowing this, spending hundreds of dollars on back-to-school clothes can be discouraging. Save money while still getting your child a new BTS wardrobe with a new app called Kidizen. The app allows parents to buy and sell children’s clothes that are used but still in good condition. The design makes it easy to shop by breaking down categories into gender and size — just like your favorite children’s clothes websites. But what makes it really stand out is that you can “follow” users whose clothes you love. So if you see a seller with a child slightly older than yours and you love what he or she is getting rid of, you’ll know when there are new clothes added for you to check out. Check out the app at Kidizen .com. EMILY LAURENCE

Churchill’s war and Obama’s aren’t the same
war averse. The war had just started. Yes, we “stood all alone” against an imminent threat of invasion, but at least we were clear where it was coming from. And we quickly received help from Canada, Australia and New Zealand, South Africa, French soldiers who evacuated to England in 1940 and others — also from the U.S.: vital supplies initially, the RAF Eagle Squadron before Pearl Harbor and a full military alliance after. The U.S. faces no such imminent single threat today. It does not stand alone against the current multiple terrorist threats; it has, and has
Re: ‘Learn from Churchill’ (Metro, Aug. 21-24) Where does one start with letter writer Arthur Horn’s fatuous use of Winston Churchill’s memory to denigrate President Obama? Churchill certainly “rallied” Britain (not just England, as my half-Welsh father who served in WWII with a Scottish unit would be quick to point out), but Britain was not “war-weary” in 1940, though we were very
had from the beginning, friends and allies around the world. The two situations and the leadership required are vastly different. The U.S. is war-weary after more than a decade — rightly so, as it realizes that the current wars result largely from the folly of Mr. Obama’s predecessor. Finally, it is not true that Barak Obama “has made no … visible effort[s]” — just ask Osama bin Laden’s fans, or ask ISIS, which is getting attention now.
education isn’t a good one. But why do some people expose it in newspapers or in press conferences? I want to give letter writer Arthur Horn a history lesson. For his statement, “When in 1940, near the beginning of World War II,” I’m making a small correction: World War II started in September 1939, when the German army attacked Poland. Outside help wanted NFL. The Patriots certainly have the slot covered, but they are still looking for a true No. 1 “X” receiver.
SPORTS
About to get real The Patriots are in the midst of prepping for their final 2014 pre-season game, which will take place Thursday at MetLife Stadium against the Giants.
Those rumors of the Patriots taking a step back on offense sound greatly exaggerated right about now and, at the very least, Tom Brady should probably begin to get a little more respect from fantasy football owners. The Pats have put up an average of 36 points in their past two pre-season games and there’s plenty of reason to believe they’ll be at or near the top of most offensive categories in 2014. But unless something drastic takes place in the next 12 days, it appears as though the Patriots will once again begin a season without a clear-cut, No. 1 “X” receiver. Brandon LaFell

and Kenbrell Thompkins are currently battling for the starting job, it seems, while Aaron Dobson is still working his way into playing shape after foot surgery in March. Dobson did not play against Carolina but practiced last week and it wouldn’t be shocking to see him play Thursday in New Jersey against the Giants (7:30 p.m., CBS4). Josh Boyce appears to be the wide receiver most likely to be cut either Tuesday or Saturday as he has had a relatively unimpressive pre-season and did not factor in to the Patriots win over Carolina last Friday. Meanwhile, speedster Brian Tyms has been something of a revelation this summer. Tyms has recorded nine catches for 163 yards in three games this preseason and has been targeted 16 times by Patriots quarterbacks.
•
The Pats announced Monday that rookie quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will start Thursday against New York. ESPN reported that there’s a good chance Garoppolo will play the entire game.

COULD BOSTON SUPPORT TWO PRO BASEBALL TEAMS? The Red Sox are printing money again. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Capitalism reigns supreme in this country, and Boston’s current management has capitalized on the local nine and its ballpark better than, arguably, any sports management group in the world. In this world, Boston is one of the few places that still puts the sport of baseball on a pedestal. We’re kind of weird like that. I mean, we have the most successful team of the past 15 years in the most popular sport in America – that would be the NFL – and yet, baseball somehow remains king. We have the most storied franchise in NBA history sitting on Causeway Street – yet, baseball somehow remains king. Yes, the famed “Fenway sellout streak” is long gone, but so too is the $5 draft beer special and the two-for-one hot dog deal that appeared at Fenway for one glorious month last season. In other words, don’t think John Henry and Co. are frantically searching for change in between car seat cushions when they hop on the Pike. In 2014, the Sox are back to banging out Fenway night-in and night-out (35,170 in attendance for a Monday game last week) despite having a worse record than the likes of the San Diego Padres. So with this lust for Major League Baseball here, what’s with the long-standing monopoly? I get that the “Big 3” cities in the U.S. (LA, New York and Chicago) are the only places that currently house multiple pro teams that play the same sport. Cities that large can certainly get away with ugly stepsister

teams such as the Mets, Jets, Clippers, White Sox and Angels because it’d be crazy not to have a second team in those towns due to their overwhelming populations. But as almost anyone will tell you, the “Boston Red Sox” are far more “New England Red Sox” than anything else. There’s a reason Fenway has special outings like “Maine Day.” Families from around the region plan vacations around going to Sox games and the Sox, in turn, cater to those families. A common bitch among Red Sox fans my age is that going to Fenway these days feels far too corporate. It’s way too structured, the focus
is definitely not on baseball, and, most important, the beer prices are too damn high. My question is always, “Why can’t there be an alternative here?” There simply has to be a market in this town for the “anti-Fenway experience,” and owners of a second MLB team in town could go 1,000 different ways in marketing an “anti-Red Sox” team not named the “Yankees.” One route? They could create a hipster sports outfit that has worked so well in Brooklyn with the NBA’s Nets. Cheaper beer. Cheaper seats. An “ironic atmosphere.” They could even take subtle shots at the Red
Sox in between innings by mocking the “Wally Wave” and “Sweet Caroline.” They could even invite all the old sausage vendors that got booted from Yawkey Way to nestle up next to the new ballpark. Oh, yeah – the new ballpark! All the complaints about Fenway – the cramped seating,
that we could host the damn Olympics. In a day and age where it is said that baseball is dying across the country, the Red Sox somehow just keep making money here. A new kid on the baseball block in Boston could maybe, someday, get in on the action.
the cramped concourse – make this new ballpark the Safeco Field of the East. Give it a retractable roof, but remember to make it look “old school” for effect. Sure, that pesky issue about where to put said ballpark is bound to come up. But there are some whack-jobs in this town that are convinced
