Bridge climber hands over passport to police Brooklyn. The Russian man was taking selfies on top of the iconic landmark. The 24-year-old Russian man who climbed the Brooklyn Bridge on Sunday in pursuit of an extreme selfie has been ordered to surrender his passport. Yaroslav Kolchin was arraigned in Brooklyn Criminal Court Monday on charges of reckless endangerment, obstructing governmental administration, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct. Just after noon on Sun-
day, an NYPD sergeant saw Kolchin climb up a support beam on the Brooklyn side of the Brooklyn Bridge, and ascend a cable beam. Kolchin walked the tower landing, 276 feet in the air, snapping selfies with his iPhone, police said. After the aviation unit responded and hovered near the tower, Kolchin climbed down and was taken into custody. Kolchin’s address is listed as the Best Western in Times Square, according to police. He is being held in lieu of $5,000 bail, and is due back in court on Friday. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Police Commissioner Bill Bratton will be doing a “full-scale

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams thanked the NYPD on Monday for their “swift action” in apprehending “another reckless individual.” “It is clear that we are not doing enough to prevent foolish selfie-takers and statement-makers from putting themselves and others in harm’s way,” said Adams. The borough president said he intends to partner with state Sen. Daniel Squadron to raise penalties for those who trespass at high-risk areas such as landmarks. Movie enthusiasts trickled into Kim’s Video & Music for one last time Monday. The landmark video store was stripped of its normal selection, with the remaining inventory being sold for 75 percent off until the doors closed for a final time at midnight. “My happiest times were standing there at the counter for an hour, being like, ‘You have to see this!’” Adam Baran said. The 33-year-old filmmaker started going to Kim’s Bleecker Street location after moving to New York in 1999 to attend NYU, looking for rare films, art house classics and the “super bad.” The First Avenue loca-
tion is the last of what was once four video and music stores owned by Yongman Kim. Kim’s first location opened on Avenue A in 1987, and the flagship store on St. Marks closed in 2009. In 2008, Kim’s stopped renting movies, and later shipped the 55,000 collection off to Salemi, Sicily. The films were free with the promise the collection was kept intact. Richard Toes searched for music Monday. Toes, 74, said he started going to Kim’s in the 1980s, to find something other than Top 40 music. “All we can do is cry now,” Toes said. Store clerks said increased rent and declining

New York doubles spirits production in past three years Albany. The state has welcomed new booze-makers. The number of wineries, distilleries and breweries in New York have more than doubled in the last three years, state officials said. Along with that is another doubling of farmbased spirit producers. New York is now home to 104 microbreweries, a 160 percent jump from the 40 that were based in the state in 2011. Among them are at least five that have opened up in New York City. Farm distilleries saw the largest increase: a 450 percent increase to 55 New York-based companies from 10, three years ago. “The craft beverage industry is one of New York’s greatest success stories, and we are doing everything we can in state government to keep the tremendous growth seen by our wineries, breweries, cideries and distilleries going strong, Gov. Our Second Shift series features people working more than one job and finding creative ways to make money. This week, one Brooklynite shares why he refuses to be defined by one career. You are an actor and a photographer. Do you see yourself ever doing one and not the other? I’m also a film editor, write and do many other things. I believe that specialization is actually the death of the soul for most human beings. What is your typical day? I wake up very early in the morning to avoid interruptions of any kind. First, I work on my acting craft. I do a vocal warm up, work on my dialect and do some text. I do that for an hour or two, then I switch over to photography and do that for one or two hours. After that, I focus more on seeking out auditions, or getting in touch with
Ricardo Birnbaum says even if he were a famous actor he would still pursue photography. / SERGIO PARRO
photography clients.
where I can live off acting.
Does searching for new gigs stress you out? I find the search invigorating. Photography is seasonal because most actors prefer to get their headshots done sometime between the spring and the fall. So winter is a little dead and I sometimes have to search for an additional source of income to provide a little cushion in case I need it. For acting, I’ve only been in New York for two years, so it’s too soon for me to have a career
What is the hardest part about multiple jobs? For me, the biggest challenge is interruption. If I’m retouching a photo and then I get a call from my agent saying she needs a new headshot or I need to come by the office, I have to shift and talk to her and it takes me a while to get back into what I was doing before. Acting and photography both require a lot of concentration, so for me that’s the biggest challenge.

Time travel at the speed of a 1935 Speedster? The 1930s brought unprecedented innovation in machine-age technology and materials. Industrial designers from the auto industry translated the principles of aerodynamics and streamlining into everyday objects like radios and toasters. It was also a decade when an unequaled variety of watch cases and movements came into being. Researchers at the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction at Indiana University in Bloomington analyzed responses from 2,850 single

UN accuses Islamic State of mass killings of prisoners Terrorists. There is a growing perception that ISIS represents a threat to the region and beyond. The United Nations on Monday condemned “appalling, widespread” crimes by Islamic State forces in Iraq, including mass executions of prisoners that could amount to war crimes. U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay condemned “grave, horrific human rights violations” being committed by Islamic State, a Sunni Muslim group that has seized large areas of Iraq and Syria to the alarm of the Baghdad government and its allies in the West. Up to 670 prisoners from Badush prison in the city of Mosul were killed by Islamic State on June 10, Pillay said in a statement quoting what survivors and

“Such cold-blooded, systematic and intentional killings of civilians, after singling them out for their religious affiliation, may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.” Pillay witnesses to the “massacre” told U.N. human rights investigators. Islamic State (ISIS) loaded 1,000 to 1,500 prisoners from the jail on to trucks
and took them for screening, Pillay said. Sunni inmates were then separated and removed. “[ISIS] gunmen then yelled insults at the remain-
ing prisoners, lined them up in four rows, ordered them to kneel and opened fire,” she said. Islamic State fighters have made gains against Kurdish forces in the north in recent weeks, seizing towns, oil fields and Iraq’s largest dam. Backed by U.S. air power, Kurdish forces later took back control of the Mosul dam. An Islamic State video last week depicting the beheading of American journalist James Foley prompted revulsion in the West and calls for tougher action against the jihadists, including taking the fight to them in Syria as well as Iraq. Some experts have suggested that attacking Islamic State in Syria should involve coming to some sort of arrangement with the government of President Bashar al-Assad, seen in the West as a pariah since an uprising against him began three years ago. Why should we be treated to yet another selfie app? It was created to poke fun of the selfie craze and at the same time to celebrate it. The app’s interface has a 1950s retro sci-fi look to it. I think there was a lot of room to take a humorously selfdeprecating view of the

I’m not exactly sure if I’m proud or embarrassed by how much thought and detail we put into all of this. What are the deciding factors in “analyzing” a selfie? My team and I picked light-hearted “units of measurement.” We did not attempt, nor
have any interest in trying, to evaluate the attractiveness of the person taking the selfie. While we have plenty of fun joking around with a person’s performance, we don’t feel the same way about evaluating how someone looks. I really do believe that everyone is beautiful and unique and wouldn’t joke about this. Don’t you think some people could get angry about their selfies being analyzed? Honestly it breaks my heart a little bit to imagine that anyone would take the analysis too seriously or in any way be made to feel badly. We took a lot of care to make this evenly ridiculous and lighthearted. WANISE MARTINEZ

Researchers claim our desire to take a selfie stems from an interest in controlling how we’re viewed and a need to belong or be remembered, as well as the documentation of an event or a frivolous moment of personal vanity. The phone and camera technology has amplified these needs into a compulsive behavior that has become a phenomenon.

Companies revolutionizing the world

There are millions of companies in the world, but few are truly revolutionary and disruptive. It’s good to know about these fast-growing ďŹ rms to learn from what they’re doing and what the world loves right now.
More than a billion people use the world’s most popular social networking website. Despite its popularity, Facebook has only just begun monetizing and building out its premium apps. Over the next few years, the company will release an incredible number of tools and changes in functionality that will continue impacting the majority of the Internetconnected world. More on pre-VMAs shooting So what was behind the nightclub shooting this weekend that put six bullets into Suge Knight’s body and put a serious damper on some pre-VMAs festivities? As one source who’s a big fan of understatement puts it, things went south “when a group of men tried to murder Chris Brown.” Hate when that happens. According to MediaTakeOut.com, the impetus for the shooting was that “Chris used to run with a bunch of gang bangers who were really scary. When he got out [of rehab], he cut them all off. ... I guess they’re upset about that.” So the moral is to not unfriend people?

still a terrible idea, as Katy Perry proved at the VMAs, teaming up with rapper Riff Raff to don a dress and suit made from poor, mistreated blue jeans in homage to Spears and then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake’s red carpet look from the American Music Awards in 2001. So what did Spears think of the tribute? She was way into it. “Just when I thought the denim dress had retired...you bring it back! You looked amazing,” Spears tweeted at Perry. But wait, wasn’t it supposed to be funny? Was this really a serious thing?

EVEN WHEN CHRIS BROWN TRIES TO DO THE RIGHT THING, BAD THINGS HAPPEN.
It’s a regular old gal-pal love-fest between Taylor Swift and “Girls” creator Lena Dunham, who just can’t say enough nice things about each other. Swift insists that her evolving views on feminism are all thanks to her friendship with CHRIS BROWN Dunham. “As a teenager,

I didn’t understand that saying you’re a feminist is just saying that you hope women and men will have equal rights and equal opportunities. What it seemed to me, the way it was phrased in culture, society, was that you hate men,” Swift tells the Guardian. “Becom-
ing friends with Lena — without her preaching to me, but just seeing why she believes what she believes, why she says what she says, why she stands for what she stands for — has made me realize that I’ve been taking a feminist stance without actually saying so.”

Emmys stick with what works Awards. “Modern Family” and “Big Bang Theory” go home big winners — again.
Taking his first turn hosting television’s big night, Seth Meyers started out the 66th Emmy Awards with a few gentle jabs at the television industry, pointing out that the Emmys airing on a Monday night in August was probably a good sign they were about to be canceled. Anyone familiar with his “Weekend Update” and “Late Night” persona knew what to expect: witty but not mean. He even willingly brought up the specter of Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, whose Golden Globes hosting has been widely praised, saying they

responded to his text about help writing jokes with “New number. Who dis?” Meyers also had some fun with the shifting cast on “Game of Thrones,” pointing out that the actors had the worst job security in television: “You wait for next week’s script the way normal people wait for biopsy results.” The night headed along a familiar path in the early going, with regular winners “Modern Family” and “Big Bang Theory” taking home trophies for directing, supporting actor in a comedy series and best actor in a comedy. Gail Mancuso, winning for the second time in a row for direction for “Modern Family,” addressed her speech to Matthew McConaughey, who was seated in the front row. Dancing with the Bad Boys of Ballet The world of “America’s Got Talentâ€? is a competitive one. Contestants can bring almost any skill to the stage, from magic to opera singing, and a team of celebrity judges chooses who gets to progress to the next round. Of course, like any reality show, fortunes can change in a moment. Such was the case for the Bad Boys of Ballet, an (almost) all-male troupe of classically trained ballet dancers led by choreographer Adrienne Canterna. The group was eliminated last week, only to earn a last-minute reprieve from former Spice Girl Mel B. We talked to Canterna about the exhilaration of getting to compete another day. Feminists can’t listen to rap or watch ‘The Bachelor’
One of the reasons Gay decided to write her book is to tell women to give themselves a break. “It’s important to have high standards, but it’s also important to recognize our humanity and that sometimes we’re not going to get it right,” she says. “We can be feminists and we can be imperfect in our feminism. I think what matters is intention.”

There’s nothing left for feminists to fight for
Feminists are automatic role models
Gay says one of the reasons she thinks many young women are hesitant to call themselves feminists is because they think we’ve reached a point where men and women are equal. “We’re no longer thinking the struggle is real because we’re no longer fighting for literacy or the right to vote,” she explains. “The fights are different, but equally important.”
Gay may have a big following, but she insists that she is not a role model, because everyone is human and bound to mess up. Instead, she urges people to keep feminism simple. Believing that men and women are equals and should be treated as such but also spending Saturday night grinding with guys to degrading music is imperfect feminism, and that’s perfectly OK.

It’s interesting that we’re still at a point where feminism has to be defined every time it’s talked about. Yes. It’s shocking that we are still trying to explain what feminism is and how it functions. It’s also a shame that people are resistant to what feminism actually is and they are still holding on to really antiquated notions as to what feminism is.
Who are your favorite famous “bad feminists”? I really love Bette Midler. I think she does some really wonderful things, and she’s very much invested in the quality of women. ... Michelle Obama is a great feminist. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be her because she’s so clear on what she wants to do and why. She’s very full of good intentions and follows through.

Copper Beech Inn
This traditional B&B oers peace and tranquility, plus an award-winning restaurant. The Oak Room serves upscale fare; locals tend to reserve the venue for special occasions, while guests in town for a brief stay should be sure to plan at least one romantic dinner at the restaurant. Through Nov. 16, you can visit Copper Beech Inn through the Raise the Curtain deal,
which grants you a $100 credit for the Oak Room and free breakfast, plus Super Deluxe accommodations and tickets to the historic Ivoryton Playhouse (www.ivorytonplayhouse.org), made famous by the likes of Katharine Hepburn and Marlon Brando. Montauk Blue Hotel If you head to Montauk in Easthampton, New York, for a few nights, you’ll want to make all of your time count. That’s why it’s tempting to stay at one of the few hotels that actually oers rooms facing the water with decks leading straight out to the beach. This year, Montauk Blue Hotel (www.montaukbluehotel. com) debuted renovated rooms overlooking the water. And the property, a staple of the area for 30 years, can also suggest several activities to do around town, like the Mon Tiki catamaran cruise (www.sailingmontauk.com), which is suitable for all ages and a great family option, or a few yoga sessions at Mindful Turtle Studios (www.mindfulturtle. com), which oers $5 o to guests of the hotel (inquire for further details). Save money
Buy gently worn back-to-school clothes with Kidizen You know how fast kids outgrow their clothes; sometimes they only wear something a few times before it’s too snug. Kidizen allows parents to buy and sell children’s clothes that are used but still in good condition. The app makes it easy to shop by breaking down clothes into categories like gender and size. But what makes it really stand out is that you can “follow users whose clothes you love. So if you see a seller with a child slightly older than yours and you love what he or she is getting rid of, you’ll know when there are new clothes added for you to check out. Check out the app at Kidizen .com. EMILY LAURENCE

Date night ideas for parents DivaLyssciously Yours
LYSS STERN DivaMoms.com @divamoms Lyss Stern is a parenting expert and CEO of Divalysscious Moms, a marketing company catering to New York’s most inuential moms.
One of my mantras is that in order to be a better parent, you need to be a happy parent. A lot of times we get so caught up with the kids and work that we forget to rekindle the spark in a marriage. I always suggest to parents to take a date night at least once a month. If you can’t hire a baby-sitter, ask a friend or neighbor to watch your kids and volunteer to return the favor for them. You need to get out of the apartment and do something just for the both of you. There are so many fun and exciting things to do in and around NYC together. I have picked a few of my favorites from my date night “Lysst.

Easy ways to spark kids’ creativity Tips. “The Artist’s Way for Parents author Julia Cameron shares what she’s learned after 20 years of expertise in raising creative children.
Julia Cameron is the go-to expert on how to raise creative children. / COLOURBOX
The NYU Child Study Center is looking for volunteers to participate in a brain research study.
Julia Cameron’s book “The Artist’s Way has been a popular guide for parents wanting to raise creative children for 20 years. Alicia Keys, Steven Tyler and at least 4 million other parents have used it as their handbook. Now, Cameron is releasing a updated version of the book, “The Artist’s Way for Parents with new tips to spark creativity in small moments. The new book gives parents tools to overcome the fear that they aren’t artsy and offers plenty of easy, everyday ways to get creative with your kids. “Right now, we have a tendency to overbook our children, she warns. “We get the
idea that they need tennis lessons, French lessons and music lessons, and the poor little child would like very much just to play. Instead, Cameron stresses the importance of exposing children to a variety of activities in smaller ways. “You can take your child to a flower shop and pick out two or three flowers that are appealing to you. Or take your child to a bird store and expose him or her to what different kinds of birds are like. You can explore your immediate environment with
adventures, she says. Most importantly, Cameron says that the activities should be enticing and not sound like a chore. She says even the most video game-loving children will be exited to make messes, so go ahead and give them acrylic paints to play with. “As parents, we sometimes want to be too neat, but it takes far less time to clean up a mess than we think it will, she says. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

Creative corner
What every home needs Cameron thinks it’s very important for every household to have a “creative corner for kids — a place with items such as building blocks, paints, markers,
crayons, clay and chalk. “Then, if you’re child says ‘I’m bored,’ you can tell him or her to go try something in the creativity corner, she says. Simply giving kids access to tools that inspire creativity can impact them in a big way.

Churchill’s war and Obama’s not the same Re: ‘Learn from Churchill’ (Metro, Aug. 21-24) Where does one start with letter writer Arthur Horn’s fatuous use of Winston Churchill’s memory to denigrate President Obama? Churchill certainly “rallied” Britain (not just England, as my halfWelsh father who served in WWII with a Scottish unit would be quick to point out), but Britain was not “war-weary” in 1940, though we were very war averse. The war had just started. Yes, we “stood all alone” against an imminent threat of invasion, but at least we were clear where it was coming
from. And we quickly received help from Canada, Australia and New Zealand, South Africa, French soldiers who evacuated to England in 1940 and others — also from the U.S.: vital supplies initially, the RAF Eagle Squadron before Pearl Harbor and a full military alliance after. The U.S. faces no such imminent single threat today. It does not stand alone against the current multiple terrorist threats; it has, and has had from the beginning, friends and allies around the world. The two situations and the leadership required are vastly different. BRIAN A. JONES, VIA EMAIL

NFL. Jets suspend Patterson after corner went missing last Friday Jets cornerback Dimitri Patterson returned to the team facility on Monday, only to be sent back out the doors again. Speaking to reporters during Monday’s practice, general manager John Idzik said the cornerback will be suspended indefinitely after he went missing in action prior to the Jets’ third preseason game last Friday night against the Giants. Termed an “unexcused absence” by Idzik on a Sunday conference call, Patterson met with Idzik and head coach Rex Ryan on Sunday night to try and clear the air. Patterson was signed as a free agent this offseason but has battled injuries and has struggled in training camp and preseason.

“[The suspension] just allows us some time to gather information so that we can make a decision that is best for the team.” John Idzik, Jets general manager On the decision to suspend cornerback Dimitri Patterson
“He will be suspended indefinitely,” Idzik said Monday. “It will give us a little time to gather more information around what led to his behavior, and I think that way we feel we’ll make a very well-informed decision as to what discipline will be coming, and there will be disciplined involved.” The time with Patterson on Sunday night was called a “listening session” by Idzik. He would not divulge why Patterson went missing. “I think the current suspension, the indefinite suspension, will be brief,” Idzik said. The Jets are already without cornerback Dee Milliner, who suffered a high ankle sprain last week. KRISTIAN DYER
