City finds fewer issues over move-in weekend Boston. Inspectors reached out to residents moving in throughout city neighborhoods during the massive event. This year’s Allston Christmas move-in extravaganza plopped plenty of personal effects on city streets over the weekend, but Boston officials said they were still pleased with how streamlined the event was compared to previous years. “The overall process has been a lot better,” said Inspec-

tional Services Department Commissioner William Christopher. “[Movers] ran into the usual problems — waiting for their keys, traffic problems and such — but the feeling this year was very good. We were out talking to parents and sending the message, ‘We’re here to help you.’ It softens the blow to some of these people moving in.” A new initiative brought 50 inspectors from various city departments to canvas Boston neighborhoods in an effort to sniff out housing violations. As of Monday afternoon, the Inspectional Services Department had issued 120 violations and 21 $300 tickets for unsafe

and unsanitary units. Inspectors also issued 1,100 code enforcement tickets, picked up 190 tons of trash or recycling and posted 120 bed bug notices. Though the move-in rush hadn’t quite come to an end as of press time, those numbers were well below the amount of citations issued last year. Officials handed out more than 2,000 citations during 2013’s move-in weekend, which was less than half the amount given in 2012. The city has attributed the year-overyear improvements to its effort cracking down on landlords in student neighborhoods. Another difference that stood out this year, Christopher noted, was more move-in activity in South Boston. Two of the most concerning problems during move-in weekend are smoke detector

the person said. That advancement, along with Touch ID, a fingerprint recognition reader that debuted on the most recent iPhone, will allow consumers to securely pay for items in a store with the touch of a finger. While companies such as Google have invested in creating ways for phones to make payments in a physical store, U.S. retailers have been slow to adopt the technology, thus limiting the use by shoppers, according to Ben Bajarin, an analyst for Creative Strategies LLC in San Jose, California. That could change with Apple entering the market because iPhones have the largest market share in the U.S., he said.

What makes the kit better than the many “get rich quick” books out there is that it’s a workbook with actionable steps that can be personalized to each reader. While making money is definitely the focus of the starter kit, there is more emphasis than you might expect on personal fulfillment and happiness that comes outside of being financially successful. Creepy hackers release creepy naked celeb photos for the Internet’s creeps It’s been a while since there was a celebrity nude photo leak, so some industrious and not-at-all-creepy hackers got together to unleash one doozy of a Labor Day Weekend photo dump, posting images allegedly of more than 100 stars including Kate Upton, Kirsten Dunst, Ariana Grande and Jennifer Lawrence. The images, reportedly culled from iCloud accounts, were initially posted to that bastion of online decency, 4Chan, before going wide on Twitter. Lawrence, for her part, isn’t taking this lying down. “The authorities have been contacted and will prosecute anyone who posts the stolen photos of Jennifer Lawrence,” her publicist says in a statement. Some of the hacking victims, such as Grande, singer Victoria Justice and Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney, were quick to dismiss the risque images as fakes, but others confirmed their legitimacy. “To

that went into this. Feeling for everyone who got hacked.” When a celebrity’s private photos are leaked online, it’s easy to jump to the conclusion that they only have themselves to blame, since they took the photo in the first place, but that’s a terrible way to look at things. The idea of “don’t take nude photos of yourself if you don’t want them online” both unnecessarily shames the victim of an actual crime -— hacking and theft of personal property — and seems to give a pass to the actual criminals in question by leaving the hacker out of the question altogether. Remember, Christopher Chaney was sentenced in 2012 to 10 years in prison for stealing and posting photos of Scarlett Johansson. Ms. Johansson, of course, committed no crime by photographing herself. It’s just a shame that so many people need to be reminded of that.

those of you looking at photos I took with my husband years ago in the privacy of our home, hope you feel great about yourselves,” Mary Elizabeth Winstead tweeted. “Knowing those photos were deleted long ago, I can only imagine the creepy effort

How to better protect yourself We spoke with Rik Ferguson, vice president of Security Research at Trend Micro, an information security firm, about how the hack might have taken place and what people can do to make their online data safe. “The celebrities’ accounts could have been targeted in several different ways,” says Ferguson. “But the most likely scenario is this one: The hacker already knew the victim’s email address for using iCloud,

clicked the ‘I forgot my password’ link, a standard ‘security question’, like their mother’s maiden name, popped up and the hacker answered it.” These answers aren’t hard to find when it comes to people whose every personal detail is scrutinized. “The trouble for celebrities is that much of their personal information is not so secret,” says Ferguson. “The attacker could have also accessed their iCloud via their webmail account, which was perhaps easier to hack.” ANTHONY JOHNSTON, MWN

Gervais blames the victims

Kirsten Dunst

Ricky Gervais was among those quick to admonish victims of the latest hacking scandal, tweeting: “Celebrities, make it harder for hackers to get nude pics of you from your computer by not putting nude pics of yourself on your computer.” The almost immediate backlash to the tweet prompted Gervais to delete it and go on a campaign of clearing up his opinions on the matter. Lena Dunham, on the other

hand, took a more serious tone. “The ‘don’t take naked pics if you don’t want them online’ argument is the ‘she was wearing a short skirt’ of the web. Ugh,” she posted.

Talking points

Brangelina literally want an island for themselves Following their surprise nuptials, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have taken their brood to Gozo, a small island near Malta, for a working honeymoon to film scenes for their new film, “By the Sea,” while they celebrate their union — and no one else is invited. “A lot of people have agreed to leave the island so they can

have privacy to film the movie,” a source tells Page Six, adding that the couple has already paid as much as $200,000 to local business owners to convince them to take a little vacation of their own.

Spears back with controversial ex? The newlyweds are taking privacy to a new, wealthy extreme.

In the wake of her split last week from boyfriend David Lucado, Britney Spears is reportedly reaching out to

some questionable old contacts. Sources tell Radar Online that despite intense supervision from her father, Spears has been secretly texting controversial ex-boyfriend Adnan Ghalib. Spears and Ghalib dated in 2008 before she was placed under a conservatorship. In 2009, her minders obtained a three-year restraining order against Ghalib. “[Her dad] monitors Britney’s cell phone, but she found a way to secretly text Adnan,” a source says. “They never really stopped talking.”

Nev Schulman: Your ‘In Real Life’ love guru

“Catfish” host Nev Schulman wants you to know that it’s not them — it’s you. In his new book, “In Real Life: Love, Lies & Identity in the Digital Age” (out today), Schulman explains that the key to establishing a long-lasting bond is to take a look inward. Yes, it also helps to know how to use Google’s reverse image search. And you should know that a Facebook account with only 12 friends is a red flag. But Schulman says there’s way more to it than that. We asked him to share his best words of wisdom for both online and offline dating.

Don’t fake it

“We all have doubts, fears and insecurities in our happiness. When you hide that from other people, you’re also kind of hiding it from yourself. If everybody goes around pretending to be the happy, fulfilled version of themselves and ignores the truth about things they’re feeling, then we’re all participating in the same game of not really connecting in a meaningful way or being open and honest with each other.”

“It’s not what to look out for in other people. It’s what to look out for in yourself. ... Getting catfished isn’t about someone being a really good liar or Internet user. It’s about being vulnerable and perhaps unsatisfied or insecure, and somebody taking advantage of that.”

Real relationships take work

“I think we all sort of subscribe to this fairy tale version of how love conquers all and how once you find your soulmate everything falls into place. That’s just crazy. It doesn’t work like that. I think we’ve become disillusioned that we will find the perfect person now that we have online dating and then it won’t take any work and compromise — but it does, no matter what.”

If you’re looking for love online, meet as soon as possible

“If you’re looking for a relationship, using the Internet is great, but it should just be a means. The trouble is when you go online as a distraction or without any clear intention or specific goal. That’s when you get into trouble.”

In an age of computergenerated marvels, is it nice to take part in an action ďŹ lm that’s about real car chases, real explosions, real eects? Well, it worked for us. ... We knew we weren’t going to have this monolithic graphic overture of CGI or anything like that. It’s a handmade, hand-wrought ďŹ lm, and everything’s in-camera. And that was the pleasure of it — to be in the streets, to make a movie that was tangible and real and to be blowing stu up in the streets.

Peter Deveraux was grittier, grimmer and very different from his past outings in the cloak-and-dagger field. You’ve been doing comedies lately, including ‘The Love Punch’ and ‘A Long Way Down.’ What convinced you to make a return to the action and spy genres? It just seemed like fertile ground — if not now, when? I had my days as James Bond, and they were glorious and wonderful and productive. We brought [Bond] back after six dormant years ... so it was invigorating to be a part of it. Then when the curtain fell — surprisingly and unexpectedly, while I was looking the other way, it was just over. And I had a certain void, a vacuum. So

when we set sail in developing “The November Man,â€? it just seemed to hit now with the geopolitical happenings going on. You talk about your earlier work in the espionage genre, but there was never a scene in your older ďŹ lms where Mr. Bond, like Deveraux does in this ďŹ lm, mortally wounds an innocent girl so he can delay his enemies and better make his getaway. Was that scene important to establish Deveraux as that dangerous, that driven? Well, it’s a shocking act, on paper and on screen. It’s one that, really, you roll the dice on and you hope that you don’t disconnect with your audience. But I think that the story, by that stage, you already know that anything can happen — and it does in the most graphic way. I love that scene. I think it’s something that defines the character, that keeps the audience off-center. JAMES ROCCHI @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

Ferguson needs judgment A question to those advising we not “rush to judgment” about the death of Michael Brown: Exactly how does anyone expect Officer Darren Wilson to be found “guilty” of anything? In the weeks since the shooting, the Ferguson PD has interviewed none of the numerous witnesses who were there, hasn’t reviewed any of

the abundance of photographic evidence, didn’t even file an incident report on the shooting itself nor respond when Brown’s autopsy confirmed he was shot in the back from a long range by police-issued weapons. Rather, they’ve spent that time either intimidating the peaceful protesters, unlawfully detaining journalists and basically acting like an occupying army. JOSEPH CONNELL, VIA EMAIL

Garoppolo has rated high for a while now NFL. The Patriots are not exactly new members of the “Jimmy Garoppolo is awesome” club. Five years from now, Jimmy Garoppolo may be viewed as Tom Brady II and people will look back on the 2014 NFL Draft the same way they currently look back on the 2000 NFL Draft. “The Patriots did it again!” they’ll say. But it’s important to note now — before we get too far removed from the 2014 selection process — that the Pats targeted Garoppolo early, and the Brady selection was more dumb luck than anything. Garoppolo was 62nd out of 256 players taken in the 2014 draft while Brady was 199th out of 254 players taken 14 years ago. Despite coming out of tiny Eastern Illinois, Garoppolo was well thought of heading into draft season late last winter. In fact, in a Sporting News story from February, Garoppolo was ranked the third best quarterback of the 2014 draft, ahead of both Johnny Manziel (picked 22nd overall by Cleveland) and Derek Carr (picked 36th overall by Oakland). Here’s the Sporting News’ glowing take on Garoppolo from seven months ago: MLB

Dropping the Mallett The Patriots traded Ryan Mallett to the Texans on Sunday and received a 2016 conditional seventh round pick in return. •

The pick could change to a sixth round pick if Mallett takes a certain number of snap counts in Houston.

Mallett is unlikely to start Week 1 for the Texans as former Titans and Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is expected to get the nod. The Texans also drafted a quarterback in the 2014 NFL Draft — Pitt’s Tom Savage in the fourth round.

RYAN MALLETT WILL NOW BE FIGHTING FOR A JOB IN HOUSTON. GETTY IMAGES

“Possessing a remarkably quick release and ample arm strength, Jimmy Garoppolo, once he quickly identifies an open receiver, is able to deliver the ball faster than any quarterback in this class. … His mental capacity and arm talent should keep him from

escaping the Top 100 picks and he could go as high as the early second round.” The two quarterbacks that were ranked ahead of Garoppolo at the time — Teddy Bridgewater and Blake Bortles — were both knocked right out of the gate in their respective, pre-draft summaries. On Bridgewater: “Teddy Bridgewater doesn’t have elite arm strength.” On Bortles: “Blake Bortles’ lack of development is what’s keeping him from being a worthwhile first-round pick.” It’s clear that Garoppolo had been high on the list of many scouts and “NFL people” prior to the Patriots’ somewhat surprising selection of him in May. Looking back on that praise should give New England fans even more faith that Bill Belichick made the right move Sunday by jettisoning backup quarterback Ryan Mallett to the Texans. Now, it remains to be seen if Garoppolo is good enough to be the man that finally takes over for Brady when No. 12 can’t get the job done anymore. But not since Drew Bledsoe has there been someone second in command who will garner more attention than Garoppolo. At this point, it’s safe to say that attention follows him. The Broncos learned the hard way that simply having a great offense doesn’t guarantee you jack. Aqib Talib, T.J. Ward and DeMarcus Ware should help matters on “D.”

Their previously outstanding “D” isn’t slated to be as dominant this season with NaVorro Bowman and Glenn Dorsey on the shelf. Then there’s the case of Aldon Smith.

NBC put up a graphic last week that shows that Andy Dalton’s numbers are virtually identical to Peyton Manning’s through their first three years. Maybe that contract wasn’t ridiculous.

The NFC North. It ain’t your daddy’s black and blue division. The Packers, Bears, Vikings and Lions should all have dynamic offenses this season.

No team has gone back-to-back since the 2003-04 Patriots, but as of right now who is to say the Seahawks can’t repeat? We know what the defense can do, but the offense might just be getting warmed up. Pete Carroll has a stable of running backs he’s ready to unleash as Christine Michael, Seattle’s third stringer, would be a starter for about half the teams in this league.

Bill Belichick would snort for several minutes if you accused him of being a copycat. But in adding Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner, it’s clear he liked what Seattle did in 2013.

The Broncos’ scoring records from last season might not stand 365 days. The Packers’ “O” just may be that good with a healthy Aaron Rodgers and Eddie Lacy ready to explode.

In addition to the Falcons and the Texans, here’s another big “bounce-back” year candidate. Can new offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak get Joe Flacco back to form?

Expect the Geno Smith jokes to subside. There’s optimism there. The problem may be the schedule. After Oakland in Week 1, they play six straight projected playoff teams.

The Saints also recognized this past spring that titles aren’t won without some semblance of balance. They grabbed one of the top defensive players on the market this off-season in safety Jairus Byrd.

Much was made about how the Colts beat the Seahawks and Broncos last year. But those two wins came in the early portion of their 2013 season. They should now focus on peaking late.

The offense should be improved. It might not be as good as rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham projects, but it’s hard to believe Eli Manning has back-to-back horrid seasons.

Jay Cutler is getting some “sleeper” buzz as a top fantasy QB. The offense seems to be in good hands under Marc Trestman, but on defense the question is, “Does Jared Allen have anything left?”

It’s hard to recall a team having more “bounce-back” year buzz than the Falcons do right now, and no, it’s not just us drinking the Liev Schreiber “Hard Knocks” Kool-Aid.

The Chargers have quietly re-tooled pretty well. They gave the Broncos some issues in that divisional playoff game last year. Can Keenan Allen and Co. take the next step?

The best team to not make the playoffs in 2013, many were saying that if they were in the AFC they would have at least made the title game. The NFC is shaping up to be just as brutal in 2014.

Ben Roethlisberger’s contract comes up plenty when discussing the Steelers. He would do himself a favor by having a monster year, and he has the weapons to do so in Antonio Brown and Markus Wheaton.

Cam Newton and the Panthers turned it around last year. Are RGIII, entering his third season, and the Redskins this year’s version of Cam and the Panthers? For what it’s worth, Washington went 3-1 in the pre-season.
