School zones across city to get speed cameras Bronx. The speed cameras will protect children’s lives, the mayor said. New Yorkers who speed through a school zone may be more likely to get a ticket in the coming weeks, whether or not a uniformed officer actually pulls them over. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the citywide installation of speed cameras in school zones on Tuesday. Cameras are already operate at 23 school zones, de Blasio said, and a total of 140 fixed and mobile cameras will be up and running in the next two years.

“Speed cameras fundamentally change reckless behavior.” De Blasio
“It’s an exciting time, the beginning of each school year,” de Blasio said. “There’s a lot going on, there’s a lot of people moving around, the last thing you want to worry about is a car speeding by and potentially endangering the lives of children.” The mayor announced the effort, which is part of his Vision Zero plan, outside of P.S. 95 in the Bronx. De Blasio said the intersection of Sedgwick and Hillman Avenues is marked as a “high crash corridor” by the Department of Transportation, and from 20082012 the corner saw 42 traffic incidents, including seven pedestrian injuries. The mayor also said traffic fatalities is the
leading cause of death in children under 14, and speeding drivers kill more people in New York than drunk and distracted drivers combined. DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg said her department is still determining the ratio between the fixed cameras and mobile units, which are vehicles with cameras installed. Trottenberg said the cameras cost between $90,000 and $115,000 each. The city has collected $9 million in speed camera tickets this year, Trottenberg said, and the number will double by the end of 2014. WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE Wendy.Biddlecombe@metro.us

G train service between Brooklyn and Queens returned as planned on Tuesday after several stops were closed for five weeks. Starting on July 25, crews began repairing the Greenpoint Tubes, which were damaged two years ago when Superstorm Sandy flooded the tracks with 3 million gallons of salt water. The Greenpoint Avenue stop in Brooklyn and 21st Street and Court Square stops in Queens were closed and replaced by shuttle buses. The MTA said Tuesday that crews installed 14,000 feet of continuous
welded rails and cleaned 9,000 feet of track during the closure. Electrical cables and wires were installed, and insulators repaired on the third rail. New tunnel lighting was installed, stairways were repaired and stations repainted, among other

A trip in time to the American Revolution in Brooklyn On a beautifully Sunday afternoon, I went to Green-Wood Cemetery to watch a group of Revolutionary War reenactors celebrate the Battle of Brooklyn. Dressed in their 18th-century best, they stuffed a cannon with balls of tinfoil and shot them toward the harbor. “Cover your ears,” warned a man in a tricorn hat before the boom. Benjamin Franklin Benjam walked around w with his kite, ostensibly waitiing for lightning to strike, but the sky was stormless, sk a ssummer blue. While waiting in line, a man with a thick Italian accent, who has worked at the cemetery for 30 years, informed me that superior toileting facilities could be found in the Columbarium, where the cremated people are kept. “What makes that bathroom better?” I asked. “Fuggedaboutit,” the man said. “This one’s like, military. That’s one’s for a king!” And so it all came back around—to the American Revolution and the Battle of Brooklyn, a story of militiamen and kings, and the fight for a better everything. JEREMIAH MOSS

A federal judge on Tuesday set Dec. 1 as the start of the tax-evasion trial of New York congressman Michael Grimm, one month after an election in which the Republican seeks a third term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Grimm, a former FBI agent who represents parts of Brooklyn and Staten Island, appeared before Judge Pamela Chen in District Court in Brooklyn. He did not speak during or after the hearing. An argument over leg room and reclining seats forced a Florida-bound flight from New York to divert to a different airport late on Monday, the third such incident of a midair disruption caused by passengers in about a week. Delta Air Lines said that “out of an abundance of caution” the captain of Flight 2370 from New York LaGuardia to West Palm Beach chose to land instead at the closest airport, Jacksonville, where local law enforcement removed one passenger. It did not elaborate on the “disruption,” but a witness told Jacksonville TV station WJXT TV-4 that an argument broke out during the flight between one woman who wanted to recline her seat and another in the row behind who wanted to sleep while resting on her tray table. The witness said one of the women became loud and abusive when a flight attendant was called. The aircraft later flew on to West Palm Beach where it landed shortly after 11 p.m., a couple of hours late. Delta represen-

tatives did not immediately return a call for comment. In the American Airlines case, a 60-year-old Frenchman was subdued by plainclothes U.S. air marshals and charged in federal court with interfering with flight crew members, prosecutors said. Just days before that, a United Airlines flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Denver on Aug. 24 had to be diverted to Chicago due to an argument between passengers over a device that stops the seat in front from reclining. The airline said one of those involved was using a Knee Defender, a small wedge-like gadget that forces the seat in front to stay upright. Many carriers, including United, ban the use of the device. Africa. US airstrike in Somalia targeted al Shabaab leader An airstrike in Somalia by U.S. armed forces targeted the leader of the Islamist militant group al Shabaab, Ahmed Abdi Godane, Somali and U.S. officials said on Tuesday, but they said it was unclear whether he was killed in the attack. Other U.S. officials said they believed Godane was killed in the strike late on Monday against a location where senior members of the al Qaeda-linked group were meeting, but the U.S. government had not confirmed that or had given further details. If Godane were killed, it would be a major victory against the al Shabaab militants fighting the Western-backed government of Somalia, which is also supported by African Union troops. Since taking charge in 2008, Godane has restyled the group as a global player in the al Qaeda franchise — a transformation

The bad boys of pop music are at it again
CULTURE
Television
The folks behind Showtime’s ‘Masters of Sex’ are testing out a new tactic to attract big-name additions to their cast: having current cast-members beg shamelessly. First up, series star Lizzy Caplan has a request for Susan Sarandon: ‘Susan, be my mom!’ Caplan says, according to E! News. ‘She’s the sexiest woman. She’s amazing. I’m such a huge fan.’ And co-star Allison Janney has some casting ideas as well, namely a certain multiple Oscar-winner. ‘I think Meryl Streep and I should play a pair of sex therapists,’ she says. ‘We can be like Helen Hunt’s character in ‘The Sessions.’ We can help people who can’t have orgasms have orgasms. That would be pretty cool.’
Yesterday was not a banner day for guys we shall somewhat reluctantly refer to as the “bad boys of pop music.” Canadian Police announced yesterday that Justin Bieber was arrested and charged with assault and dangerous driving over the weekend, and Chris Brown pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault. Let’s start with the Biebs: This weekend he was reportedly driving with Selena Gomez near Stratford, Ontario, where he grew up, when his vehicle collided with another and then a “physical altercation” ensued. ABC News reports that Bieber’s lawyer emailed a statement saying, “Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez’ peaceful retreat in Stratford this weekend was unfortunately disrupted by the unwelcome presence of paparazzi.” Bieber is already facing an assault charge in Toronto and is still on probation after being convicted of vandalism for egging his neighbor’s house. Meanwhile, Chris Brown’s guilty plea in Washington, D.C. ended up with the star apologizing for breaking the nose of a fan who tried to thrust himself into a picture with Brown last year. Brown was sentenced to time served (he spent more than two months in jail for a probation violation) and ordered to pay $150 in court costs. Brown remains on probation until 2015 for the charges of beating Rihanna in 2009.

Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and the other victims of this weekend’s massive iCloud hacking and nude photo leak can rest a bit easier knowing that the feds are on the case. “The FBI is aware of the allegations concerning computer intrusions and the unlawful release of material involving

Dakota Fanning: All grown up Interview. “The Last of Robin Hood” star is sick of thinking about her age. Until she read the script for “The Last Days of Robin Hood,” Dakota Fanning had never heard the story of notoriously loose Hollywood star Errol Flynn (Kevin Kline) dying in the arms of teenager Beverly Aadland (Fanning). But it’s a role she loved performing, even if now, at 20, she’s pretty much done with playing characters who are younger than her actual age.
Researching Aadland “I really didn’t do that much research. I looked at certain things, like how she looked and how she wore her hair and what her makeup was like. There’s an article from her perspective, but there’s a lot of things that are from other people’s perspective. I wanted to have my own point of view of what happened instead of reading Florence’s [her mother’s] book. Kevin did a lot of [research], so if I needed to know any facts I could ask him.”

GOING OUT
Satisfy burger cravings without a beefy budget Burgers have come a long way from a hunk of meat resembling a hockey puck on a barbecue. Today’s burgers use top-quality meats, combinations of cuts and interesting toppings. Here are some of my favorite places to get a burger fix at a good price.
Island Burger Two locations: This place is the king of toppings, with more than 35. You can also feast on tender chicken “churrasco” sandwiches with the same toppings; both are cooked to absolute perfection. I find it hard to choose but will usually go for The Mona Lisa ($14.95) with mozzarella, pesto, sauteed onions, mushrooms, peppers and Parmesan cheese on a ciabatta roll. Start with the grilled Thai chicken sticks for $8.25. The beach decor makes this tiny place feel like a vacation.
Merrion 1840 Second Ave.: Hold onto your buns! The hamburger, or vegan burger, here is free with the purchase of a beer; or score a free order of wings with a pitcher. Merrion is a great choice to watch the big game, with 20 beers on tap and specials during big events. The burgers are basic, but they’re tasty and larger than you’d expect. Splurge on the waffle fries or sweet potato fries for $3.
Corner Bistro 331 W. Fourth St.: This corner dive is an NYC classic, serving up some of the juiciest burgers. Expect no frills: The menu consists of burgers, grilled cheese and chili. For $7 you get a burger cooked to order and served on a sesame seed bun. It’s so good I usually get a second one for dessert.

Is NYC’s townhouse market undervalued? Real estate. The gap between single-family homes and new condos is widening as buyers pay a premium for apartment amenities.
Realty television interior design duo Cortney and Robert Novogratz paid $4.3 million for their nearly 7,200-square-foot townhouse in the West Village in 2007. They recently listed the home for $21.5 million, or just under $3,000 per square foot. While that price may seem high, the Novogratzes, who had their own HGTV show, “Home by Novogratz,” previously listed the house, which is located at 400 West St., in 2009 for $25 million to no avail. And yet, compared with prices for new development condos in the neighborhood, the property, which is being listed by Douglas Elliman broker Raphael De Niro, is a relative steal, according to some top brokers. That relative bargain stems from the fact that the price spread between townhouses and condos is widening, thanks to the explosion of luxury condos in recent years. Halstead Property’s Louise Phillips Forbes went a step further, saying that on a price-per-foot basis townhouses are significantly undervalued in New York
+ PLUS The numbers
Widening spreads While townhouse prices are climbing, they are not rising nearly as fast as condo prices. The median sales price for a townhouse in Manhattan was $3.59 million in 2013 versus $2.7 million in 2004, a 33 percent jump, according to appraisal firm Miller Samuel. However, median condo prices jumped from $804,418 in 2003 versus $1.25 million in 2013 — a 55 percent increase.

City. Compared with the Novogratzes’ asking price of $3,000 a foot, nearby condos range from $3,750 to $4,450 a foot. “What [my clients] can get in a co-op or condo is nowhere near what you can buy, on a square-foot-
age basis, in a townhouse,” Forbes said.

Casey DeBois didn’t spend much time debating the brand-new apartment she checked out with her husband last fall. “When we got there, we were just like, ‘This place is insane,’” remembers DeBois of the muchhyped New York by Gehry. “There’s an ocean view from Manhattan – compared to our previous apartment, where the view was a brick wall.” Less than a year later, it’s almost impossible to be-

After recovering from the breathtaking view (it’s true – if not blinded by jealousy, you can see the breakers), you’re struck by the space’s elegant comfort and flashes of wit. “I really like clean, modern interiors that reflect my personality,” says the 29-year-old, who is an interior designer by trade. “My aesthetic is mid-century modern meets farmhouse, but it’s a little bit of everything. I really wanted to mix things up for my own home.” The result is an eclectic yet restrained space that joyfully blends high and low. Think ahead
Shop local
If you’re renting, remember that you’ll be moving everything. “In Manhattan, you have to think, ‘How long am I going to stay in the space, and what can I take with me?’ Sectional sofas are never a good idea — who knows what the layout of your next place will be?”
Although she has some pieces from retailers such as West Elm and Restoration Hardware, most of DeBois’ apartment (and those of her clients) is furnished and trimmed with the help of small local shops and Etsy sellers. In New York, she likes Furnish Green and Horseman Antiques.
DIY with Ikea
Think outside the frame
Even DeBois breaks out the Ikea wrench once in awhile — not that you could tell. “I’m not afraid to use Ikea. My TV console is an Ikea piece, but I covered it with reclaimed wood flooring. My night stands are Ikea, but I put Anthropologie hardware on them,” she says.
DeBois’ apartment comes to life with art. One of her favorite finds — a woven straw piece — hangs above the couch in her office. She picked it up for $40 while strolling through the Flower District. She thinks it might have been roof thatching in a former life.
DeBois scored the pink vintage sofa in her office from Furnish Green, one of her favorite NYC stores.

The line consists of four categories: core, lifestyle, yoga and running. “Core you can really wear for everything, but yoga and running are both very sports-specific, she says. “For yoga, you really need a shirt that isn’t going to ride up if you’re doing a shoulder-stand or a zipper poking your leg when you’re in pigeon. And for running, you need shirts and shorts that won’t chafe. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence emily.laurence@metro.us

Many like to rent a log cabin to get away from the city. Owning one may be out of reach, but building one is a different story. It doesn’t require a fortune, provided you have an extra room and carpentry skills. Imgur user [oldblue] took an unused room in his basement and converted it to look like a 1950s-era log cabin’s interior. He designed the cabin with lumber taken from shipping crates and stone found on the side of the road. The kicker is that the project cost a mere $107 in materials. And that $107 upped the price of his house by thousands. To view the full project breakdown, visit www.makezine.com CABE ATWELL, MAKE ZINE

Don’t you dare press the Snooze button on the clock known as the SnuzNLuz! The alarm connects via Wi-Fi to your online bank account, and it donates your real money to an organization you definitely do not support. “Are you a butcher? Set your SnuzNLuz to donate to PETA. Are you a land developer? Set it to donate to the Wilderness Society,” its website says. If you snooze, you lose — literally! www.thinkgeek. com, $39.99.
Three, two, one, lift off! This alarm is not that simple to shut down. It launches a rocket into your room and the only one way to disable its annoying sound is to find where it landed and place it back on the launch pad. Re: ‘Companies revolutionizing the world’ (Metro, Aug. 26) Columnist Timothy Sykes does not even have the goal of “investing” in promising businesses. His history in junk stocks exposes someone who has taken the new approach to investing — don’t look for promising companies, look for a minute edge in a trade and execute it. It’s just the modern version of the gambling hall, not “investing” at all. Those who worship the filthy lucre have done a complete job in perverting the purpose of human life — now, the only goal is riches. How they are acquired is of no importance.
Re: ‘Creepy hackers release creepy naked celeb photos...’ (Metro, Sept. 2) We always advise college students to monitor the information they post online, yet Ricky Gervais is pilloried for saying celebrities should avoid computerizing nude pictures of themselves. Common sense is common sense — in today’s online world, the first line of protection is common sense.
Aquarius | Jan. 21-Feb. 18. One way to attract influential followers is to get involved in humanitarian causes. You can make a difference if you adopt a leadership position.
Taurus | April 21-May 21. You may feel burdened by the needs of an older relative. Take a moment to address your own needs, but don’t overspend.
Leo | July 23-Aug. 22. You will have no problem making a lasting impression. Be prepared to step into the limelight. A physical challenge will be invigorating. EUGENIA LAST

NFL. The Jets have no shortage of storylines as they begin their sixth season under coach Rex Ryan.
The Jets haven’t necessarily dominated on the field the past five seasons, but they’ve always been the dominant source of news off the field in New York. Last year was quiet in New York though, as head coach Rex Ryan barely clung to his job under general manager John Idzik. The odd couple enters 2014 with the same quarterback — now with a year of experience — but also with raised expectations.
Visit Metro.us for our Giants preview before it runs in print tomorrow. No one expected Ryan to carry a depleted roster with a rookie QB to an 8-8 record and playoff relevancy. Now, his job may be on the line for the exact opposite reason as 2013: The Jets must make the playoffs for the first time in four seasons — or else. MARK OSBORNE @MetroNYSports

Growing pains
For all the conjecture, Jets fans got about what they should’ve expected out of a rookie quarterback last season. Geno Smith was successful at times, and downright awful at times. But the positive was he showed improvement over the ďŹ nal four games of the season and saved his coach’s job in the process. And remember, Smith’s top receivers last season were Jeremy Kerley (43 catches) and David Nelson (36 catches). It is
inarguable the team had the worst receiving corps in the NFL. There are fewer excuses this season with the addition of a legitimate No. 1 receiver in Eric Decker and a top pick at tight end in Jace Amaro. Smith had a solid preseason (23-of-33, 268 yards, one touchdown, one interception), but it remains to be seen how long the leash will be for the sophomore QB.
QUINTON COPLES HAD JUST 4 1/2 SACKS LAST SEASON.
One of the reasons the leash may be short on Smith is his backup. There’s no question the Jets planned on starting Smith when they signed veteran Michael Vick. k. But that doesn’t mean they are deter-mined to keep Vick tied to the bench if they start the season poorly. Vick looked good in preseason, just like e Smith, and there’s likely kely a faction of the rosterr who’d like to see their ir idol play. But only if Smith struggles.

the middle of the pack as far as sacks go (tied for 13th with 41). The pass rush from the linebackers was minimal, and it seems unlikely that 33-year-old Calvin Pace will duplicate his career year of 10 sacks in 2013. Quinton Coples speciďŹ cally needs to pick up the slack.

Brutal schedule
Not so special Ryan has always received credit as a defensive genius. He’s deserved it for the most part, but talk has been decidedly quiet about just how average it was in 2013. They were ranked 11th in the NFL in total defense and 19th in scoring defense. The secondary, now absent Antonio Cromartie, is a big factor, but the defensive front seven has gotten a pass. There’s no question Sheldon Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson are elite talents on the line, but the Jets were in
GENO SMITH HAS 12 TDS AND 21 INTERCEPTIONS IN 2013.
DEE MILLINER WON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR WEEK 17 AGAINST MIAMI.
An overlooked factor in last year’s 8-8 season was the relatively easy schedule the Jets faced. They were 2-3 against the four playo teams they faced (1-1 against New England). This year’s schedule is unlikely to be as friendly. After an easy opener against Oakland, they’re at Green Bay, home against Chicago and Detroit, at San Diego, home against Denver and away at New England. They’ll be lucky to start 2-5.
Tenacious ‘Dee’ The secondary is going to be ugly as the season gets underway. There’s no way around that. But if Dee Milliner can look like he did late in 2013 when he comes back from a high ankle sprain, the cornerback situation might be passable enough to keep the Jets in playo contention. If Milliner’s ankle injury keeps him out through the ďŹ rst four or ďŹ ve weeks, though that seems unlikely, it will be a huge issue.

NFL SEASON PREVIEW
Jets expect playoffs after three years on sidelines NFL. Rex Ryan and the Jets face high expectations as they still rebuild. The same pundits who predicted the Jets would be woeful a season ago are now eyeing the playoffs for this revamped team. What a difference a season of exceeded expectations makes. “I think the bottom line is you have to prove
it, guard Willie Colon said. “You’ve got to do it on Sunday and stack wins and be competitive in your division. The idea the Jets are postseason bound might be a bit optimistic, even if the locker room sells it as a possibility. In many ways they are still in the midst of a roster overhaul. The Jets were a veteranladen team that whimpered to a pitiful end to the 2012 season, with big-money contracts that
were mostly all purged by the end of last season — Mark Sanchez and Santonio Holmes chief among them. “There’s also a lot of supposed-to-be’s. We can’t control that,â€? running back Chris Ivory said. “The players are here, the coaches are here. We are the ones putting in the work. ‌ There’s always high expectations. We added a few great players to our team. Let’s see what we do and where we go.â€?
