Area doctor is the third American to get Ebola Health. Rick Sacra, 51, of Holden most recently worked at the Family Health Center of Worcester before returning to Liberia earlier than planned this summer. His colleagues said medical missionary work has always been his calling, and he jumped at the chance to help manage the deadly hemorrhagic fever. PAGE 02

Mass. Ebola doc’s vocation drew him to help in Liberia Worcester. Colleagues hail the selflessness of Rick Sacra. The Massachusetts doctor who is the third American to contract the Ebola virus in Liberia has been drawn to missionary medical work for decades, according to his colleagues at a Worcester health center. In fact, Dr. Rick Sacra, 51, whose identity was released on Wednesday, cut short his recent stint at the Family Health Center of Worcester to return to West Africa to help Ebola patients there, said Frances Anthes, the center’s CEO. Anthes said Sacra most recently returned from Liberia, where he has worked off-and-
on since 1992. Sacra, she said, had originally planned to return to that country in late August, but instead returned weeks early because of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, where 1,900 have died from the disease since March. In the past, he has lived in Liberia for years at a time, returning to the U.S. to refine his medical skills. “It was always really clear he believed everyone had a right to health care, including the poor in other countries,” said Anthes. Dr. Gregory Culley, chief medical officer for the Family Health Center of Worcester, said he had exchanged emails in recent weeks with Sacra. In those exchanges, Sacra described Monrovia, Liberia’s capital, as chaotic and

“He wasn’t nervous. That’s the type of person he is. He went because he’s Rick. It is his duty, his calling. He had no choice.” Culley
said the epidemic was “zerocontrolled.” Before he left, Culley asked Sacra, a father of three who lives in Holden and hails from Wayland, if he knew what he was getting into. “He said ‘Yes.’ He wasn’t nervous. That’s the type of person he is. He went because he’s Rick. It is his duty, his calling. He had no choice.” It was unknown as of press time whether Sacra would be brought back to the U.S. for treatment. Last month, two American missionaries survived their Ebola scare after being treated and released from an Atlanta facility. DANNY MCDONALD @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

Emergency
Massive fire engulfs Allston apartments Firefighters spent hours battling a massive blaze in Allston on Wednesday evening, which had reached nine alarms as of press time.
Pro-choice activists concerned over women’s rights to safe reproductive health pulled into Copley Square on Wednesday as part of a national bus tour calling for a lift of bans that deny abortion coverage for low-income women. Since kicking off the 10,000mile Be Bold Road Trip in Los Angeles on Aug. 9 the tour has hit up Portland, Oregon; Minneapolis and Chicago, before parking Boston. The bus served as a centerpiece for a rally Wednesday featuring Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley. Visitors snapped photos at a “selfie station,” wrote messages on the side of the bus and heard abortion stories from local women. “It’s been really successful
in terms of people just walking by and engaging with us,” said Harvard student Brianna Suslovic, 19, who volunteered at the event. “It’s also been a really great opportunity to educate people on things they may not know about restrictions on abortion access and access to abortion care.” The tour arrived in Boston just months after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the state’s seven-year-old law that created a 35-foot buffer zone outside abortion clinics in Massachusetts on the grounds that it violated protesters’ right to free speech. Boston resident Nate Richardson wore an eye patch as he posed for a selfie in front of the bus. “Just doing stuff like taking
a selfie; it doesn’t really do much, but at the same time it shows all the different faces of what the issue looks like,” said Richardson, 23. It’s not just women. It can affect anyone.” The tour lands in New Haven, Connecticut, today and is slated to end in Washington, D.C. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

If you’ve been downtown this week then you’ve noticed that the city is packed, the students are back and Boston is buzzing. After surviving the chaos that is Sept. 1, we are now in the best month of the year, when the weather is perfect and the city is energized after a quiet summer. However, as anyone who has ever lived in Brighton knows, September is not a quiet month. Students are packing Boylston Street bars, PBR pyramids stand proud (and precariously) inside Comm Ave. apartments and every house on Pratt Street is cranking their speakers to “11.” But, before you send a noise complaint to the BPD, let’s compute why this is all sweet music to our ears. According to the BRA, Boston alone has 35 colleges and universities that enroll 152,000 students — 34 percent of Massachusetts’ total college enrollment. Those 35 colleges in Boston employ over 42,600 people and the 152,000 students spend approximately $1.7 billion a year in Boston. That’s $1.7 billion per year! Include Cambridge in the equation and the number of college students swells to 250,000 — that’s 250,000 students who spend billions and billions of dollars per year in the city.
By the numbers Here’s a breakdown of how many students attend the Hub’s bigger colleges: •
Boston University: 33,747
•
Harvard: 28,147
•
Northeastern: 21,257
•
UMass Boston: 15,741
•
Boston College: 14,400

Boston appoints first Chief of Education Mayor Marty Walsh has appointed an academic expert to a newly created cabinet position tasked with crafting and executing an education agenda for the city.
Walsh on Wednesday named Rahn Dorsey as his Chief of Education. Dorsey will be responsible for implementing Walsh’s “vision for academic excellence,” including nontraditional and traditional practices, according to a city spokeswoman. Since 2009, Dorsey served at the Barr Foundation as Evalua-

MIT suspends frat after woman, 18, falls from window

Boston. An investigation is underway after a woman was injured at an MIT frat party. A Massachusetts Institute of Technology fraternity has been suspended by the university and the national organization after a woman fell from a thirdstory window during a party on Sunday night. The woman, who was a student but was not affiliated with MIT, was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and was expected to recover from her injuries. Twitter feed Today, Tom Arnold is declaring his readiness to be hacked, Kevin Hart seems tense and Chloe Grace Moretz is suddenly embarking on a new career.
Connie Britton more enlightened than Gwyneth Paltrow
Remember when Gwyneth Paltrow compared being a mom with a regular office job to being a mom who’s a famous actress and decided her situation was tougher? Well, “Nashville” star Connie Britton does. “Our hours are long, but I would never compare what I do to what anyone else does,” Britton tells Redbook. “Everybody’s working hard and doing the best they can — if you’re a mom, there’s that pressure, we all face it. I’m constantly being pulled in different directions. But that’s the thing: Moms are pulled and distracted. I would never say that’s worse for me because I’m an actor.” As a refresher, here’s what
Paltrow said about the difference between her and, say, Diane Keaton’s character in “Baby Boom” (because all of these references are terribly current): “I think it’s different when you have an office job, because it’s routine and ... you can do all the stuff in the morning and then you come home in the evening. ... When you’re shooting a movie, they’re like, ‘We need you to go to Wisconsin for two weeks,’ and then you work 14 hours a day and that part of it is very difficult. I think to have a regular job and be a mom is not as — of course there are challenges, but it’s not like being on set.” Thanks again, Goop!

Cee Lo Green’s “The Good Life” won’t be coming back to TBS for a second season, which makes sense considering that the former “Voice” judge’s life isn’t that good right now. The cancelation news, first announced by the Hollywood Reporter, comes in the wake of Green’s latest legal troubles and a rape-related Twitter meltdown, and critics have been quick to suggest cause and effect. Last week, Green pleaded no contest to giving a woman ecstasy with-
out her knowledge in 2012. Though his plea maintained his innocence in the case, he was sentenced to three years’ probation, 360 hours of community service and a year of weekly NA/AA meetings. He followed that up by getting into a bizarre Twitter fight about rape and the nature of consent. “If someone is passed out they’re not even with you consciously! So with implies consent,” he wrote. “People who have really been raped remember.”

Noted independent filmmaker Whit Stillman takes the social worlds he examines in films like “Metropolitan,” “Barcelona” and “Damsels in Distress” and transfers it to television — sort of — with an Amazon Studios digital pilot, “The Cosmopolitans.” The pilot for the series — chronicling a group of American ex-pats (including Chloe Sevigny and Adam Brody) trying to make their way in the Paris social scene — debuted online last week, with more to come if all goes well.
We’re looking for HIV+ Black men who have sex with men. Are you interested in participating in a 9-week group for HIV+ Black men who have sex with men? What will a Whit Stillman TV show look like? We always called it a film: “We’re doing the film, we’re making a film.” It’s just a film that only happens to run 26

Have you planned those out to some extent? Not exactly. I really love to write from detail to story rather than have a story and then do the details, so I have to kind of give them some version of how it could be before mid-September. But when it really comes down to it, I prefer
How’ve you found the experience of working with Amazon? Well, I’ve had a long relationship with them. One of the first things that Amazon Studios did, actually, was to option “Metropolitan” for remaking. They were going to allow neophyte filmmakers to use the “Metropolitan” story to adapt to their own uses. I think too many people focus on that sort of class nature of “Metropolitan,” when in fact it’s really just a story of group dynamics. It’s someone from outside coming into a group and the group falling apart or metamorphosing. That really could be any milieu. But I think there were problems at the Writers Guild, or complications, so that didn’t go through. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

On pop charts populated by rappers and dance floor divas, a 23-year-old Brit with an acoustic guitar stands out. Ed Sheeran, whose sophomore album, “X” peaked at the No. 1 position on the Billboard 200 earlier this summer, says he likens his popularity to a niche that needs to be filled. “I think there is one singer/ songwriter for every generation,” he says. “I guess I’m just this generation’s one.” This statement is characteristic of Sheeran in conversation. There’s an element of the grandiosity one needs to become a pop star, but there’s also a healthy dose of humility and even a trace of self-doubt. He says the phrase “I guess” about as often as he sings about being drunk. Sheeran’s music is also rife with these levels of certainty. “I like a lot of different types of music, and I like trying them out, I guess,” he says. “I never want to be a one-trick pony, even if I don’t master the other crafts.” On his latest single, “Don’t,” he mixes his natural sense of melody with rap, fuzzy bass, delicate falsetto backgrounds and a sing-along chorus that seems to be missing a certain word. “That was always the original intention to put it on the record with the swear,” he says of the chorus, which was originally “don’t f— with my love.” Why did he change it? Fear that it wouldn’t receive airplay? Concern that the swear would make the tale of infidelity sound too mean? Nope. It was an eventful cab ride from L.A. to Malibu. “I was chatting with the driver,” recounts Sheeran. “We

‘Don’t’ ask that One thing you won’t get Sheeran talking about is who the subject of “Don’t” is. Pointing to the lyric, “me and her, we make money the same way,” many were quick to suggest when “X” was first released that it was about Ellie Goulding, with whom Sheeran had been spotted at a few public outings. So who is it about? “No one’s got an answer out of me out of me yet,” he says, resolute that this interview won’t be any different.
were talking for about an hour and then he said his daughter was a fan and I said, ‘Hey can I play you some new stuff?’ … On that song he thought I swore too much, so I took it off for him, I guess.” Elsewhere on “X,” Sheeran raps about Bon Iver and croons soulfully about how he’ll be loving the subject of his song long after “the crowds don’t remember my name.” What’s that about? “Everyone’s got their kind of time slot, depending on how long your audience wants to make your time slot,” he says, “so I’m just going to keep going until it starts to fade away, I guess.” PAT HEALY @metrousmusic

DRINK YOUR WAY TO A FREE TRIP TO CANCUN Typically, if you want to drink 100-plus varieties of tequila, you have to take a trip to Mexico. At The Painted Burro in Davis Square, you can do so without leaving the city — and then take the trip to Mexico anyway. It’s one of the prizes guests can drink their way toward in the bar’s Agave Club program. Guests are given a checklist of 100 tequilas and mezcals (out of about 150 total), and the bar keeps track as you drink through them all. Drink 25 to earn a home margarita kit, or for 50 get a four-course dinner for two with mezcal pairings. Drink all 100 for round-trip airfare to Cancun. “We have a lot of regulars that are frequently trying and tasting a lot of the tequilas, and we thought it would be the right thing to do to recognize their loyal patronage and give something back to the guests, director of operations Alec Riveros says. Virgo | Aug. 23-Sept. 22. Put your energy and enthusiasm to good use. By getting small jobs done, you will have the time to do something that will make you feel special. Libra | Sept. 23-Oct. 22. Interaction with family members or colleagues will be dissatisfying. If you want to lessen the tension, consider stepping away from the turmoil by offering to run errands. Scorpio|Oct. 23-Nov. 21. Don’t let friends or family subdue your enthusiasm. You may be considered quirky or unusual, but that is no reason to stifle your creativity or deaden your personality.
Sagittarius | Nov. 22Dec. 21. Keep money matters a secret for the time being. Resist the urge to lend or borrow. Don’t discuss investments or financial plans until you have your facts and figures straight. Capricorn | Dec. 22-Jan. 20. You may be confused about your love life. Be honest about the way you feel, and discuss personal decisions with your partner. Sharing is the best way to keep your relationship alive. Aquarius | Jan. 21-Feb. 18. Protect your interests. There are people who would like to benefit from your ideas or ventures. Your intuition will guide you to the right confidants.

Pisces | Feb. 19-March 20. Participate in an unusual or unconventional creative process. New friendships will develop if you are open about the way you feel and the things you want to pursue. Aries | March 21-April 20. Take care of your responsibilities. This is not a good time to air grievances. Bad feelings will mount if you get involved in an argument. Choose your battles wisely. Taurus | April 21-May 21. Travel and communication are highlighted. Valuable friendships and information will come your way if you do things with people you admire.
Don’t exclude Michael Sam If Michael Sam had performed poorly in preseason games, his exclusion from the NFL would be understandable. But everybody admits that he was not just good; he was VERY good. So, the only reason he was excluded is that all of the NFL teams are “afraid.” It looks like there will be only one football hero this season, and he is openly gay. All the rest are wimps, and they just gave themselves a black eye.
Leo | July 23-Aug. 22. Put in extra hours at work and increase your productivity. Your superiors will appreciate your efforts and will put you in the running for a raise.
It’s refreshing to hear this come from a man. Some female friends and I are often climbing mountains to convey this idea to both men and women who fail to understand how a socially constructed, patriarchycentric expression of language can impact how they interpret a situation. By saying this, you are demonstrating that such ideas are not developed in a vacuum by women alone. In many conversations about women’s empowerment, men are often left out of the conversation as though they have little wisdom to add or capacity to acknowledge women. I applaud you for

As much as there is an annual cry for the day after the Super Bowl to be declared a National holiday … or rather, a National hangover day, Opening Day in the NFL also deserves consideration for time away from work. Watching football is without question America’s pastime these days, and the NFL isn’t shy about stringing us along. Week 1 of the NFL season has the most games spread out over a five-day time frame of the entire year, with the action beginning Thursday night and stretching all the way into next Tuesday morning. So, break in that special spot on the couch and don’t move until February. It’s football season.

The Pats will win Super Bowl XLIX
Aaron Rodgerss will be MVP
Ten years after beating the Philadelphia Eagles to win their last Super Bowl, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick will once again hoist the Lombardi Trophy, again at the expense of the Philadelphia Eagles. The main reason why the Pats couldn’t keep pace with the league’s elite last year was because of numerous injuries to key players. Rarely are the football gods that cruel, injury-wise, to one franchise in back-toback years.
A quarterback has won the league MVP P award in six of the last seven years. In other words, it takes a historic season by a running back to swipe the award from a signalcaller. Defenses will be kept honest when playing Green Bay as Eddie Lacy’s running ability will allow Rodgers to pick opponents apart. rt. Quick-hitters
Biggest surprise: The Eagles will win the NFC There’s going to be many weeks this season in which people say, “Wow, this Chip Kelly guy is just that good.” But the biggest reason the Eagles will be in Glendale, Arizona, in 150 days is because of the teams they play. The NFC East as a whole is down once again and the Eagles play the 12th easiest schedule in the NFL. Plus, the NFC favorites, the Seahawks and 49ers, are due to regress this season.
We like the Pats over the Eagles in Super Bowl XLIX, but there’s plenty to figure out before we get there: •

Biggest storyline: The year of PEDs Soon to be gone are the days of people looking the other way when a football player is “’roided up.” There’s already some concussion discussion fatigue going on and people will need something new to rail against. Perhaps Wes Welker shifted the discussion single-handedly. Alleged Molly use will give way to talk about the NFL’s true drug of choice: HGH.

GRAB THESE LATE RISERS NOW There are a lot of owners out there who got steals on draft day and don’t even know it yet. A look at some late risers:
slow to transition from I-AA Towson to the big leagues. So Tate, who has tons of NFL experience in the zone-blocking scheme Kyle Shanahan has installed, is going to be an every-down player. He’ll be running behind an underrated yet strong offensive line on a team that will have to run the rock a ton to hide their passing “attack” of Brian Hoyer, Miles Austin and Andrew Hawkins.
Dougie Money Initially, the regime change in Tampa didn’t look like a good thing for Doug Martin. They were talking up a committee approach, with rookie Charles Sims handling all the passing-down work. But since then, Sims broke his ankle and Martin has been able to change the staff’s opinion of him as a receiver. Now we have a three-down back for run-first head coach Lovie Smith. Furthermore, the Bucs were able to swing a trade for guard Logan Mankins.

Avoid these players in Week 1: •
Jarrett Boykin: Locked in as the No. 3 WR in Green Bay. But playing exclusively on the outside, he’s going to see a lot of Richard Sherman.
•
Ladarius Green: The matchup vs. Arizona is perfect but the usage is not. Antonio Gates is still the man in the red zone.
•
Hey, players can get better. A low-upside slot man through
Devonta Freeman: Steven Jackson’s hamstring is 100 percent … right now.

his first two NFL seasons, Mohamed Sanu broke out as the star of both the Bengals’ offseason and training camp. In preseason action, he posted a 7-126-1 line on just 65 preseason snaps. With Marvin Jones breaking his foot, Sanu is set to play in all formations for at least the first five weeks — if not more. He’s a sneaky WR 3/4 candidate who is on waivers in most leagues.
