Demonstrators from NYCLASS, PETA, the Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages and other animal rights groups gathered Wednesday evening along Central Park South to protest the use of horses in a New York Fashion Week show. New York designer Vincent de Souza’s show started Fashion Week at 7 p.m., turning the street into a “moving runway” with models wearing his designs
riding on the carriages. De Souza, who has designed clothes for celebrities such as Katy Perry and Rihanna, previously called the horse-drawn carriage “the epitome of style,” and said “there is no better canvas for a runway show than a carriage ride through Central Park.” “I don’t think a $10,000 designer gown goes well with horse manure,” said Allie Feldman, executive director of NYCLASS, a nonprofit animal advocacy group. Feldman said she was “disgusted” when she heard the designer was using horse-drawn carriages in the show, and said he was using “abused animals” for “his own publicity.” Feldman also said several of the animals rights

groups reached out to the designer, including sending 40,000 letters, to ask him to not use horses in his show. The protesters chanted and waved signs, one reading, “Horses deserve a better runway,” and lined the block at 7th Avenue facing the park. Carriage drivers queued up across the street said they were used to the protesters. Driver Bruno Angelucci said he grew up around horses in Italy, and said the company he works for “takes very good care of the horses.” Attempts to reach de Souza before deadline were unsuccessful. NYC. St. Patrick’s Day Parade allows openly gay group to march A LGBT group from NBC Universal will become the first gay group to openly march in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee said Wednesday they approved OUT@NBCUniversal’s application to walk in the
March 17 parade with their banner. The group tweeted, “We are proud to be the 1st #LGBT group to march in NY St. Patrick Day parade.” “This is a welcome first step and a good day for New Yorkers who believe in fairness, equality and
human rights,” Council Speaker Melissa MarkViverito said. Earlier this year, Mayor Bill de Blasio did not march in the parade, which has historically excluded openly gay groups from marching.

There’s no better place to bike around than New York City, according to Bicycling magazine. The magazine released its biennial ranking of the 50 most cycling-friendly U.S. cities in its October issue, which hit stands yesterday, and the Big Apple topped the list. New York jumped six spots higher than in 2012. The city has more than 350 miles of bike lanes and more than 96,000 members subscribe to Citi Bike, the nation’s largest bikeshare program. Columbia student will carry mattress to protest alleged rape Emma Sulkowicz, 21, said on Tuesday she’ll carry a dorm room mattress with her around campus until her alleged rapist is expelled. The protest is the visual art major’s senior thesis, titled “Mattress Performance,” or “Carry that Weight,” which will depict to anyone who asks the weight she carries of her rape in a dorm bed two years ago, Sulkowicz said in a video posted to YouTube by the school’s paper Columbia Daily Spectator. Sulkowicz is one of 23 students who filed a federal Title IX complaint over the university’s sexual assault policies. Columbia University declined to comment to protect “the privacy of students participating in gender-biased misconduct proceedings.” MELANIE DOSTIS

One day before the start of the city’s universal pre-K program, Mayor Bill de Blasio said nine pre-Ks won’t open, and 36 others will see a delay in opening. According to the city, the locations had “at least one outstanding agency concern” after inspections. On Tuesday, de Blasio said he felt “confident” about providing 50,000 children full-day pre-K. “There will be some programs that will be delayed, and what we know is there will be some programs that we decide don’t make the cut. … That is not a glitch, that is following through on a specific plan, and if we don’t see what we’re looking for, we’re going to be aggressive in terms of protecting the health and safety of our kids,” he said. RFK Bridge ramp work finishes early Drivers traveling from Manhattan to Queens on the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge now have a smoother ride, the MTA said Wednesday. Improvements to the 54,000-square-foot ramp wrapped up a month ahead of schedule on Aug. 29. The project, which replaced the original ramp built in 1967, cost $50.7 million. The new ramp has a smoother surface, safety shoulders and better drainage, the MTA said. WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE

FOR ADULTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES
Januvia® works when my blood sugar is HIGH... ...and works less when my blood sugar is LOW. Actor portrayal.
JANUVIA works by enhancing your body’s own ability to lower blood sugar. • • • •
JANUVIA is a prescription pill you take once a day. JANUVIA, along with diet and exercise, helps lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. JANUVIA, by itself, is not likely to cause blood sugar going too low (hypoglycemia), because it works less when blood sugar is low. JANUVIA, by itself, is not likely to cause weight gain.
JANUVIA (jah-NEW-vee-ah) should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or with diabetic ketoacidosis (increased ketones in the blood or urine). If you have had pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), it is not known if you have a higher chance of getting it while taking JANUVIA.
Selected Risk Information About JANUVIA Serious side effects can happen in people who take JANUVIA, including pancreatitis, which may be severe and lead to death. Before you start taking JANUVIA, tell your doctor if you’ve ever had pancreatitis. Stop taking JANUVIA and call your doctor right away if you have pain in your stomach area (abdomen) that is severe and will not go away. The pain may be felt going from your abdomen through to your back. The pain may happen with or without vomiting. These may be symptoms of pancreatitis. Do not take JANUVIA if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, including sitagliptin. Symptoms of serious allergic reactions to JANUVIA, including rash, hives, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and throat that may cause difficulty breathing or swallowing, can occur. If you have any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, stop taking JANUVIA and call your doctor right away.
Your doctor may do blood tests before and during treatment with JANUVIA to see how well your kidneys are working. Based on these results, your doctor may change your dose of JANUVIA. The most common side effects of JANUVIA are upper respiratory tract infection, stuffy or runny nose and sore throat, and headache. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.
Pay as little as $5 per prescription.*

Kidney problems, sometimes requiring dialysis, have been reported. If you take JANUVIA with another medicine that can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), such as a sulfonylurea or insulin, your risk of getting low blood sugar is higher. The dose of your sulfonylurea medicine or insulin may need to be lowered while you use JANUVIA. Signs and symptoms of low blood sugar may include headache, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, confusion, irritability, hunger, fast heart beat, sweating, and feeling jittery.
Talk to your doctor about JANUVIA today.

NYC. Joan Rivers out of intensive care unit Comedian Joan Rivers, who suffered cardiac arrest last week, has been moved out of an intensive care unit in a New York hospital and into a private room, her daughter said on Wednesday. Rivers, 81, is “being kept comfortable” in a private room at Mount Sinai Hospital on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, according to her daughter, Melissa Rivers. The comedian was placed on life support after she stopped breathing and suffered cardiac arrest during outpatient surgery on her vocal cords at a nearby clinic on Aug. 28.

Long history Rivers started out writing for “The Ed Sullivan Show.” A career in stand-up followed. She later worked as a regular guest host for Johnny Carson on NBC’s “The Tonight Show.”

Rivers also hosted “The Joan Rivers Show,” and later “Fashion Police,” a show in which she commented on the unfortunate red carpet choices of celebrities.

CVS stops carrying smokes early Drugstore chain CVS announced the end of cigarette sales in its stores one month earlier than anticipated. A name change, to CVS Health, accompanied the announcement on Wednesday. The company also said it was launching a smoking cessation campaign. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said he “applauded” CVS for “[prioritizing] public health over corporate profit,” and called upon other chains like Walgreens and Rite-Aid to stop selling cigarettes as well. “As pharmacies increasingly market themselves as a source for community health care, they send a mixed message by continuing to sell deadly tobacco products,” Schneiderman said. The United States plans to fight Islamic State until it is no longer a force in the Middle East and will seek justice for the killing of American journalist Steven Sotloff, President Barack Obama said on Wednesday. He added that destroying the militant group will take time because of the power vacuum in Syria, the abundance of battlehardened fighters that grew out of al Qaeda during the Iraq war and the need to build coalitions, including with local Sunni communities. Islamic State released a video on Tuesday showing the beheading of the U.S. journalist, the second American hostage to be killed within weeks, in retaliation for U.S. air strikes in Iraq. “The bottom line is this: Our objective is clear and that is to degrade and destroy [the Islamic State] so that it’s no longer a threat not just to Iraq but also the region and to the United States,â€? US missionary describes ‘dark days’ of Ebola Smiling and appearing robustly healthy, a U.S. missionary infected with Ebola while working in Liberia on Wednesday shared publicly her battle with the deadly virus for the first time. Nancy Writebol, 59, of Charlotte, North Carolina, has been recovering in an undisclosed location since her release last month from an Atlanta hospital that also treated another missionary who contracted the often lethal virus. She told reporters there were mornings when she woke up and thought with surprise, “I’m alive.” “I thought whether I live or whether I die, it’s going to be OK. It’s going to be OK,” she said, speaking at times through tears about her recovery at the headquarters of SIM USA. REUTERS

Ebola virus strikes third American Toll. According to WHO, Ebola has killed more than 1,500 in West Africa since March. A 51-year-old Massachusetts physician, Dr. Rick Sacra, is the latest missionary worker to be infected with Ebola while working in Liberia, the Christian organization SIM USA said on Wednesday. Sacra had been delivering babies and working with patients who were not known to have the deadly virus, the organization said. It had not yet been determined how he contracted the disease. He had been following protocols for containment of the disease. Sacra

Verizon to pay $7.4 million over failure to notify privacy rights Verizon Communications Inc. will pay $7.4 million to settle a U.S. investigation that found the company failed to properly notify some customers of their privacy rights before using their information for mar-
keting, U.S. regulators said on Wednesday. The Federal Communications Commission said its investigation found that starting in 2006, some 2 million new phone customers did not receive proper privacy notices in their first bill. The notices would have told consumers how to opt out of having their personal information used to tailor marketing offers.

Phone companies are generally prohibited from using personal data they
collect from their customers, though such data can be used for marketing if the consumer gives permission. “It is plainly unacceptable for any phone company to use its customers’ personal information for thousands of marketing campaigns without even giving them the choice to opt out,” said Travis LeBlanc, acting chief of the FCC’s Enforcement Bureau. Andrew Madoff, the son of convicted fraudster Bernard Madoff, died on Wednesday from cancer, his lawyer said. He was 48. “He died peacefully at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center on Sept. 3, 2014, surrounded by his loving family,” lawyer Martin Flumenbaum said in a statement. Both Madoff sons denied knowing about the fraud and were never criminally charged in connection with the scheme. They turned their father in to authorities in December 2008, saying he had confessed to them. However, the guilty plea of former Madoff adviser Paul Konigsberg in June included reference to the brothers as “co-conspirators,” suggesting prosecutors were still considering criminal charges against Andrew Madoff, sources told Reuters. Bernard Madoff operated a massive Ponzi scheme estimated to have cost investors $17 billion in lost principal. His other son, Mark Madoff, committed suicide in 2010 on the second anniversary of his father’s arrest.
Quoted
“Andrew Madoff has lost his courageous battle against mantle cell lymphoma.” Martin Flumenbaum, Madoff ’s lawyer, said in a statement
trustee seeking to recover money for Bernard Madoff’s victims filed civil claims against Andrew Madoff and the estate of Mark Madoff, accusing the brothers of aiding the fraud and collecting millions of dollars in illicit profits. Most recently in July, the trustee, Irving Picard, asserted in a court filing that the brothers deleted emails linking them to the scheme at Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC and used sham loans to buy luxury apartments in Manhattan. Defense lawyers denied the claims and pointed to a ruling from the United Kingdom’s High Court of Justice last October against Picard that concluded the brothers did not suspect fraud. A spokeswoman for Picard said in a statement that the trustee and his team “were very sorry to learn of Andrew Madoff’s death and they extend their sympathies to his family.” Last year, Andrew Madoff told the magazine People he would “never forgive” his father for his crimes and blamed a recurrence of his cancer on the stress caused by his father’s arrest and conviction. “The pencil skirt with a slit has always been a very sexy piece for me,â€? Joseph Altuzarra told us just as his buzzy collection is poised to hit Target. Lucky for us, the Parisian-born designer didn’t shy away from including any of his signature sizzle to the line he created for the family-friendly retailer. To wit: He even dabbled in lingerie for the first time. The 50-piece collection, hitting stores Sept. 14, seamlessly mixes vamp with office attire. Pencil skirts and dresses with eyebrow-raising slits are paired with banker shirts or demure pussy-bow blouses. Harness belts add authority to bohemian flounce, and python prints and moody black set the tone: This woman means business. Altuzarra’s been designing clothes for self-assured, seductive women since launching his brand in 2008. It’s why fashion power girls such as Carine Roitfeld and Vanessa Traina quickly flocked to his side. Now the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year, who cut his teeth at Marc Jacobs and Givenchy, is bringing this sexy sway to the masses. Someone has to balance out all the normcore right? Congratulations on your Target line! The collection amazingly evokes both a high-level executive and a woman going on a hot date. How is that? Thank you. When designing this collection, we kept in mind the Altuzarra woman: a woman who is confident, empowered and sophisticated. She wants to feel sexy and seductive, no matter the occasion. She has a high appreciation for quality tailoring and considered design, and wants to wear this clothing whether she’s at work or going out at night. You always describe your clothes as being for a woman not a girl. What do you like or dislike about the way girls dress these days. For me what is the most interesting is the mentality and mindset of somebody — so it’s not necessarily about age specifically, but more about frame of mind when it comes to dressing. Women tend to have a different sense of maturity and confidence, which is what I look for and keep in mind with my designs.

Your clothes ooze sophistication, but what does an Altuzarra woman wear on, say, a relaxed Sunday? Or weekend getaway? No matter what the Altuzarra woman is doing, she wears something that allows her to look sexy and feel beautiful. For example, a white T-shirt with the red velvet blazer from the Target collection paired with a great skinny jean — it is a casual, comfortable yet sophisticated look. Misha Nonoo’s moment
The designer and model share a laugh during fittings. / NATASHA JAHANGIR
The designer was inducted into the exclusive CFDA Incubator, launched an accessories line for Aldo and collaborated with an art world star. We drop in before her spring show to talk about, well, all of it.
“I haven’t done laundry in two weeks, so I’m really reaching back into the archives now,” exclaims Misha Nonoo about her current look: an oversized white button-down with little gold sequined gym shorts from her Spring ’13 collection. While this might sound like someone who doesn’t have a handle on the situation — Nonoo’s Spring ’15 fashion show is just five days away — there will be no all-nighters for her. The 28-year-old designer — one of the 10 up-andcoming brands inducted into the prestigious CFDA 2014-2016 Fashion Incubator program — has actually got things neatly put together (the outfit, by the way, is pretty chic, too). In fact, there’s nothing but smiles and sweet “OMG, she’s so pretty” type chatter in her studio as models come in for casting during this countdown until the big day. “As a team, we’ve become much more organized,” says the Bah-

rain-born, London-raised designer. “If I think back to this time last year, it was so down to the wire — everything was so stressful. And now, it’s just no longer as difficult.” That’s impressive to hear, considering this season marks her most am-
bitious outing yet. A contemporary art buff, Nonoo collaborated with artist Dustin Yellin to integrate his three-dimensional sculptures onto her sleek short dresses and tailored jackets. She also teamed up with Aldo to create her first-ever line of shoes and
handbags as part of the Aldo Rise program. Yet the self-proclaimed punctuality freak is so on top of things that she has all the fabrics for pre-fall ’15 already ordered. “It’s really about becoming more decisive,” she says. “As you become more and more clear about who your woman is, it becomes much easier to dress her every season.” And it’s clear from the designer’s signature looks — soft tones and sheer panels mixed with menswear-inspired tailoring — that the Nonoo woman, while career-focused, isn’t afraid to embrace her femininity. “There’s so many smart women out there, and there just aren’t so many smart clothes to wear,” says the designer, adding: “My woman’s on the go. And for her, it’s not so much about the trend, it’s about investing in pieces that are timeless.” Kind of like that oversized white button-down from a few seasons ago.
Art and fashion
On collaborating with artist Dustin Yellin “For the past four of five seasons, I’ve been very much inspired by contemporary art,” says Nonoo. “My idea was to really integrate art and fashion. And to actually work alongside an artist in making sure that art was a primary component within the collection.” You can find Yellin’s prints on dresses and T-shirts in the spring line.
On collecting “We’re very serious about buying into things that have value,” says Nonoo, who is married to Alexander Gilkes, the co-founder of online auction site Paddle8. “So it’s not just an artist of the moment, but it’s really

Get a front row seat through the eyes of these style bloggers As any longtime fashionista will tell you, New York Fashion Week just gets bigger and bigger with each passing year. One main reason that the event has become popular far from the confines of Manhattan is because a new wave of bloggers are putting their own spin on fashion coverage and style. Their NYFW style “Sophie and I are most excited to wear delicate lace pieces from Stone Cold Fox that are perfect for spring,” says Remington.

His NYFW style
“I just wear what I wear every day, which is generally a combination of navy blue high-top Chuck Taylors, 3X1 jeans, an ancient T-shirt that’s been washed so many times it has 18,000 holes in it, and a bomber or denim or leather jacket,” says Hindin-Miller.
His NYFW advice “I’ve been going to shows for about 12 years now, and I remember exactly how it felt when I first started out — lonely. I knew nobody at all, and fashion folk aren’t always the most welcoming bunch,” he says. “My advice is to have a partner in crime with you at all times.”

New York Fashion Week kicks off today, marking the monthlong marathon of runway shows that inform us on the spring styles we’ll be coveting months from now. But before our attention turns to breezy dresses and open-toe sandals, let’s focus on fall. Get inspiration on your big buys of the season from these three fashion experts who tell us what they’re lusting after right now. TINA CHADHA

Bucket bag, $695, MansurGavriel.com “We’ve deemed it the new Birkin at Lucky, because it’s just as hard to get your hands on (but it’s under $1,000). This bag is a modern classic, one that my future daughter will surely ‘borrow’ from my closet!”

Fashion Week’s Forget Marc Jacobs. If you really want to show off your fashion bonafides, you need to have tickets not to the stalwarts everyone knows, but the hip up-and-comers who have major insider cachet. From a streetwear designer whose clothes blur the lines between male and female to a new label from the daughters of fashion royalty, these five brands have the hype, talent and connections to make it big in the biz. RAQUEL LANERI
Delpozo New York Fashion Week isn’t necessarily known for envelope-pushing design. (Leave the high-concept stuff to London and Paris.) Yet Madrid-based label Delpozo has recently injected a bit of experimentation and glamour into the Big Apple’s more sportsweardriven schedule. Ball gowns with elaborate embroideries, blouses with ballooning sleeves and capes covered in riotous (but elegant) pink plaid are some of the looks that wowed the fashion crowd. Designed by Josep Font, a Spanish couturier who was hired to relaunch the small label after its founder
Non-Surgical Facelift Vampire Face-Lift combines the science of hyaluronic acid fillers with blood derived growth factors which stimulate production of Collagen and Fatty tissues, normally used by the body to regenerate damaged skin. The technology developed and trademarked by Vampire Face-Lift providers allow for a custom designed procedure to suit distinct needs.

died unexpectedly in 2011, the new Delpozo made its debut in 2013, where its couture-quality creations seduced the luxe, Vogue-sanctioned online retailer Moda Operandi, who snapped the entire collection for its site. In less than two years, Delpozo has introduced a footwear line and opened a store in Miami; now it counts stars Kiernan Shipka and Cate Blanchett among its fans. And best of all, since Font works at a remove from the major fashion capitals, his collections consistently contain the most original, surprising clothes of the week. Who knows what he’ll show this time around?

Public School
Designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne launched Public School as a line of fancy T-shirts and sweats back in 2007, but it was in 2013 that the menswear label really exploded, winning both the Swarovski Award for Menswear and the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award for emerging designers (which came with a $300,000 prize). What makes Public School unique, however, is its approach to so-called “streetwear.” “Luxury designers like Riccardo Tisci can say most of their inspiration comes from the street,” Chow told the New York Times.
“We started from a street base, but our influences are higher-fashion.” Indeed, there’s a bit of Comme des Garcons eccentricity even in their most basketball court-ready designs, and the two have expanded their line to include more luxe items like leather jackets and suiting that looks natty but effortless. This year, Public School debuted a womenswear line, too — filled with layered slouchy drawstring pants, sharp blazers, oversized sweaters and culottes (to the delight of tomboys everywhere). Will their sophomore effort prove just as crowd-pleasing? We’re betting yes.

Hood by Air
“It’s about an attitude or gesture rather than being male or female,” says Shayne Oliver of his gender-bending streetwear label Hood by Air. Attitude is right: Hood by Air closed its Fall 2014 show last season with an epic vogue-off, in which a cadre of shirtless male dancers
stomped their feet and whipped their long white hair in violent ecstasy to the deafening sounds of industrial metal music. And just like that Hood by Air went from idiosyncratic cult label (whose cult, to be fair, included such hip-hop heavyweights as A$AP Rocky, Rihanna and Kanye West) to fashion darling. To add even more hype

Trademark
Rosie Assoulin
Of course the daughters of Chris Burch (creator of C. Wonder and ex-husband of Tory Burch) would start their own line of ladylike preppy separates, called, cleverly, Trademark. Yet nepotism be damned, Pookie and Louisa Burch can craft some pretty swoon-worthy clothes, from windowpane-checked skirts to colorful car coats and graphic shirt-and-pant ensembles with a kind of American eccentricity. A less-quirky-KateSpade-meets-a-more-luxeJ.-Crew, Trademark has naturally been getting a lot of buzz. Though it just launched this year, the gals will, in conjunction with debuting their second collection, open their first boutique at 95 Grand St. in SoHo.
It’s not every designer whose Fashion Week debut draws top editors from Vogue. Then again, not every new designer has Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine as BFF. Though 29-year-old Rosie Assoulin may have friends in high places, her bonafides are real: She learned the tools of the trade from masters Oscar de la Renta and Lavin’s Alber Elbaz before finally launching her own label a year ago with a confident resort collection filled with elegant wide-legged trousers, insouciant offthe-shoulder blouses and sophisticated eveningwear with a dramatic flair (sashes, cascading ruffles, bustles, a bold stripe or trim). This year, Forbes named her as one of its 40 Artists

to this season’s outing, the 26-year-old has announced he’ll be showing two collections — one in New York City and the other in Paris. The question is: Will he save the big spectacle for France? Regardless, with rap royalty and Vogue editors clamoring to see his show, this is going to be one of the week’s biggest. Go get it, Oliver!

and Designers Under 40, and she scored her first major celeb coup (Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockeryand wore a stunning structural white, green and blue column to the Emmys). This collection could cement the rapidly rising Assoulin as a red carpet go-to.

GOSSIP
Connie Britton more enlightened than Gwyneth Paltrow Remember when Gwyneth Paltrow compared being a mom with a regular office job to being a mom who’s a famous actress and decided her situation was tougher? Well, “Nashville” star Connie Britton does. “Our hours are long, but I would never compare what I do to what anyone else does,” Britton tells Redbook. “Everybody’s working hard and doing the best they can — if you’re a mom, there’s that
pressure, we all face it. I’m constantly being pulled in different directions. But that’s the thing: Moms are pulled and distracted. I would never say that’s worse for me because I’m an actor.” As a refresher, here’s what Paltrow said about the difference between her and, say, Diane Keaton’s character in “Baby Boom”: “I think it’s different when you have an office job, because it’s routine and
... you can do all the stuff in the morning and then you come home in the evening. ... When you’re shooting a movie, they’re like, ‘We need you to go to Wisconsin for two weeks,’ and then you work 14 hours a day and that part of it is very difficult. I think to have a regular job and be a mom is not as — of course there are challenges, but it’s not like being on set.” Thanks again, Goop!

Cee Lo Green’s “The Good Life” won’t be coming back to TBS for a second season, which makes sense considering that the former “Voice” judge’s life isn’t that good right now. The cancelation news, first announced by the Hollywood Reporter, comes in the wake of Green’s latest legal troubles and a raperelated Twitter meltdown, and critics have been quick to suggest cause and

effect. Last week, Green pleaded no contest to giving a woman ecstasy without her knowledge in 2012. He was sentenced to three years’ probation, 360 hours of community service and a year of weekly NA/AA meetings. He followed that up by posting on Twitter, “If someone is passed out they’re not even with you consciously! So with implies consent,” he wrote. Yikes.
Details of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s nuptials last month at Chateau Miraval, their estate in France, are coming out in People magazine. Chief among them are the efforts the couple made to include the memory of Jolie’s mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who died in 2007 of ovarian cancer. “Brad had a dedication to Marcheline engraved inside the chapel where we stood,” Jolie tells the magazine. “I also wore a little flower ring that was hers, and [my brother] Jamie wore an angel pin from her jewelry box.”

Paying the price for ‘Poor Behavior’ Theater. Theresa Rebeck’s latest tells you what to think — but then leaves you guessing.
Two couples plan to spend the weekend at a country house. Sure, no one can remember whose idea this was, and nobody seems to be having a good time. And the “country” is upstate New York. But it could still turn out great, right? Maybe not if one of the guests is a sociopath. And one’s suicidal. And one has anger management issues. And don’t forget the reliable self-inserts of playwright Theresa Rebeck. The two candidates for this prestigious assignment in “Poor Behavior” are Ian (Brian Avers) and Ella (Katie Kriesler). They bicker like others flirt, taking up op-
posing views on topics like morality and goodness to flesh out what are presumably Rebeck’s opinions. That leaves their respective spouses, Maureen (Heidi Armbruster) and Peter (Jeff Biehl), to stand in as foils. Maureen, who is nothing more than crazy and unlikable, accuses Ian and Ella of having an affair. And she’s determined to draw levelheaded Peter into the drama that she most likely fabricated (because she’s just so crazy). Finally, he begins to believe If you go

the story. And Ian decides that if their spouses already think he and Ella are cheating, they might as well go ahead and do it. Or are they supposed to refrain — even if they’ll be treated like adulterers, regardless? Despite the pedantry that dominates the dialogue, and the flaws in character dynamics, the play is still wholly entertaining. That’s mostly thanks to the actors, who add much-needed nuance to this dysfunctional quartet, as well as a heart-quickening surprise in the last leg of the play. It may not quite fit the tone of the rest of the script, but it gives the energy in the room a much-needed boost to carry the audience through to a shrug-worthy “make of this what you will” ending. ‘The Imitation Game’ Benedict Cumberbatch injects some early life into the Oscar race in this true wartime tale of British mathematician Alan Turing and his efforts to crack the German’s Enigma machine during World War II. Cumberbatch has come in strong to the festival before (see last year’s disappointing “The Fifth Estate”), but this one feels like the real deal.

The Daily Love: Breaking the cycle of unhealthy relationships Relationships. Mastin Kipp shares how to find the love you deserve. It was a tweet from Kim Kardashian that helped change the course of Mastin Kipp’s career.
Kipp had been tweeting advice and observations about relationships to the approximately 1,000 followers of his account when the reality star discovered it in 2009. “I feel so inspired when I read tweets from @TheDailyLove,” she wrote. “They make me feel lovey and positive!” That night, the popularity of The Daily Love Twitter account skyrocketed to 10,000 fans, and a new chapter in Kipp’s career was born. In his new book “Daily Love: Growing into Grace,” Kipp traces his somewhat unlikely journey from being a young executive at a record company Introspection

“A toxic relationship is when you think, ‘What can I take from this person?’ versus a healthy relationship, which is, ‘What can I give?’ ‘How can I support this person?’” notes Kipp.
Do you find that you run into the same problems and have the same frustrations in every romantic relationship? Some self-reflection is probably in order. “I call it the ‘same person in different shoes’ rule,” says Kipp. “You are basically saying, to live like this is what I’m worth.”

Fashion Week for all Invite lost in the mail? You can still have a great week.
Put your best foot forward to have a chance at getting in the door to Level R, the rooftop bar of the Empire Hotel (44 W. 63rd St.) that overlooks Lincoln Center. The drinks are pricey and the music is loud, but the scene is so haute you’ll have style pointers for the next decade. Though it’s only been around for about a year, basement club Gilded Lily (408 W. 15th St.) is among the preferred spots for industry and charity events.

Shows Find out what will be coming down the runways next year at Emerging Trends (Holy Apostles Ballroom, 296 Ninth Ave.). For the event’s first time at NYC Fashion Week, designers will present brief showcases, and if you see something you like you can buy it at the event using your smartphone. Networking is encouraged, so bring your portfolio. $35-$100, Sept. 4, 7 p.m. This might be the only fashion show preoccupied with what we wear underneath our stylish duds. Burlesque Boudoir at Opus 51 (51 Gansevoort St.) is a lingerie fashion show featuring the designs of the U.K.’s Louise Ferdinand and Steve Boi, with cocktails and luxury swag because it’s wouldn’t be a proper event otherwise. Duane Park’s dancers will provide the entertainment. $50-$250, Sept. 4, 6 p.m. New Jersey’s own organic bakery Royal Cake Design Studio is partnering with designer Michael Costello to put on the firstever Cakes & Couture Fashion Show, arguably the city’s most delicious red carpet affair. Edible, life-size replicas of Costello’s Spring 2015 designs (his other recent project: costumer for Beyonce’s On the Run Tour) will be on display during the party at 404 NYC, but don’t fret — they’ll be divvied up to take home at the end of the night. $220-$480, Sept. 12, 7 p.m., www.cakesand couture.com

Metro doesn’t think like the patriarchy Re: ‘Creepy hackers release creepy naked celeb photos for the Internet’s creeps’ (Metro, Sept. 2) Thanks for writing: “The notion ‘don’t take nude photos of yourself if you don’t want them online’ both unnecessarily shames the victim of an actual crime -- hacking and theft of personal property — and seems to give a pass to actual criminals by leaving the hacker out of the equation altogether.” It’s refreshing to hear this come from a man. Some female friends and I are often climbing mountains to convey this idea to both men and women who fail to understand how
a socially constructed, patriarchy-centric expression of language can impact how they interpret a situation. By saying this, you are demonstrating that such ideas are not developed in a vacuum by women alone. In many conversations about women’s empowerment, men are often left out of the conversation as though they have little wisdom to add. As readers finish the article, they can re-center themselves and be reminded that this is essentially a case of an invasion of privacy, and that hacking into other people’s private accounts is not the fault of the victim. NFL. The Giants have a new offense, but face plenty of questions already.
The Giants rebounded from an embarrassing 0-6 start to last season, but not well enough to make the playoffs. The poor start probably cost longtime offensive co-
ordinator Kevin Gilbride his job. But the results of that change have been anything but fruitful so far. The Giants got a chance to play five preseason games due to a spot in the Hall of Fame Game. It might have been critical for an offense which still looks shaky at best. MARK OSBORNE @MetroNYSports

Bouncing back
Eli Manning faces pressure not just to understand new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo’s offense, but simply look better than he did in a 2013 which was the worst season of his career. He threw a careerworst 27 interceptions to lead the league. Some of it was the fault of an offensive line which looked well below average most of the season. But even if he was constantly under pressure, a veteran QB should never throw for such an absurdly high

number of picks. And now new quarterbacks coach Danny Langsdorf wants Manning to aim for a completion percentage of 70 percent. He was at 57.5 percent last season and has never been higher than 62.9 percent (2010). To say 70 percent is unlikely would be the understatement of the year. But Manning has to be significantly better if the Giants are going to make the playoffs.
On a ‘Rolle’
Up with JPP
Antrel Rolle quietly — if it’s possible for Rolle to do anything quietly — had his best season in New York last year. He was rewarded with a Pro Bowl appearance, but partly due to the 0-6 start he was never given the credit he deserved. Rolle appeared to be nearing the end of his career after 2012 when he was already 30 years old. But last season’s success could be a sign he’s got something left in the tank — or could’ve just been a last gasp before wrapping up a very good career.
Few defensive players have been as mercurial as Jason Pierre-Paul in the entire NFL. When Pierre-Paul exploded for 16 1/2 sacks in his second season, it looked like the Giants had found the newest, best defensive end in the game. But then he struggled to 6 1/2 sacks the following season in 2012, and had just two sacks as he dealt with a host of injuries last season. He says he’s as healthy as he’s been since his huge season in 2011, and hasn’t backed down from saying he hopes to exceed that total in 2014. Even a solid, double-digit sack total would make a huge impact on the defense.

Bum Beckham
Back depth
There was a time when Giants fans thought they’d be seeing a gamebreaking wideout in Odell Beckham after he was taken No. 12 at this year’s NFL draft. Now they’d just like to see him period. Beckham pulled a hamstring on the first day of camp and hasn’t been back. He neared a return to practice in late August, only to suffer a setback. It could end up being like Prince Amukamara’s rookie season, which was a loss due to injury even though he returned midway.
If you’d been told after last season David Wilson would be forced to retire before 2014 due to neck injuries, the loss would’ve been heralded as catastrophic. The running back group was so awful in 2013 a washed-up Brandon Jacobs was its top performer. But the signing of Rashad Jennings and the emergence of rookie Andre Williams has the backfield looking better than the wide receiving group in a stunning reversal from a year ago.
