Experts: Tread carefully in wake of area shark attack Safe swimming. Common sense is the best defense, pros say. Two women narrowly escaped with their lives Wednesday evening at Manomet Point when a great white shark breached four feet into the air, capsizing their kayaks and knocking them into deep, dangerous water. The women, who were photographing seals, escaped unscathed, though their kayak suffered a gnarly bite. On Thursday, the New
England Aquarium’s senior scientist John Mandelman and spokesman Tony LaCasse offered some tips on how to avoid shark attacks.
1
Dodge seals, despite their cuteness, especially at dusk and dawn: “If you see seals nearby in the water and want to reduce your risk of an attack, get out.” said La Casse. “Seals are the primary prey for sharks in these waters.”
2
Unfortunately, no water is too shallow for sharks: “We’ve seen sharks take seals right off the beach, so it’s completely plausible that [an attack] could happen in shallow water,” said Mandelman.
survival,” said Mandelman.
4 Visit Metro.us to learn more about Wednesday’s shark attack in Plymouth.
3
Swim in groups, and stay calm: “Most shark attack victims die of blood loss combined with shock. If you have someone who is there to help get you to shore and get medical attention you have a better chance of
Never underestimate life jackets and paddles: “You could be literally knocked unconscious by the shark and survive if you have your life jacket properly secured,” said LaCasse. “If in a kayak, I’d keep that paddle handy to be able to divert the shark in the worst-case scenario.”
5
Hate to break it to you, but shark repellents don’t work: “It’s not like spraying yourself with Deet and going hiking,” said Mandelman. “There is no evidence that any shark repellents work, though studies have shown promise. The ones marketed online are based on sensational science.”
6
If you see a dorsal fin: “Don’t try to identify [the species]. Just get out of the water,” said LaCasse.
7
Know the facts, relax: The last Massachusetts shark attack happened in Truro in 2012, when a Colorado man’s legs were bitten. There hasn’t been a fatal shark attack here since 1976. Annually, there are less than 70 reported unprovoked attacks worldwide, with less than 10 fatalities. “Just accept the fact that the likelihood is extremely rare, but if you go swimming, you always take a chance,” said Mandelman. A former pharmacist linked to a 2012 outbreak of meningitis which killed 64 people was arrested Thursday while boarding a flight at Logan Airport in an alleged attempt to flee the country, Justice Department officials said. Glenn Adam Chin, 46, had been a supervising pharmacist at the former New England Compounding Center of Framingham which produced the tainted steroids that sickened 700 people in 20 states in the worst outbreak of fungal meningitis recorded in the nation. The U.S. Attorney’s office in Boston is continuing its criminal probe into the matter, but arrested Chin
because of his plans to board a plane to Hong Kong. He was charged with one count of mail fraud. Chin’s attorney claimed in federal court on Thursday that his client had a roundtrip ticket and had planned a 12-day trip to Hong Kong to attend a family wedding. Chin was released to home confinement on a $50,000 bond. He is the first person to face criminal charges related to the incident, which pushed NECC into bankruptcy and led to stricter national regulation of custom medication makers. Chin faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted in that case.

Sudbury. Police allege teen attempted to kidnap pair of 12-year-old boys Sudbury police have arrested a 17-year-old male in connection with an attempted kidnapping of two 12-year-old boys. A Skyview Lane resident called police around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday to report an attempted abduction of two boys and a suspect who fled in a vehicle, according to a statement from police. The suspect, the caller told police, tried to convince the boys to enter his vehicle. An investigation followed and police arrested the

“Boston Calling is one I’m actually really excited for, because all of the other artists are so cool. I think Volcano Choir is playing, Childish Gambino is playing, Sky Ferreira is playing!”

W
ithin the past 12 months, Ella Yelich-O’Connor has watched her debut single reach No. 1 and her debut album go platinum in the States and in her native New Zealand. She has sung a Nirvana song with surviving members of the band and watched Bruce Springsteen cover her biggest hit. But despite this meteoric rise in popularity, the 17-year-old who calls herself Lorde promises she hasn’t caved into the indulgences she criticized in “Royals,” the song that first put her on the map around this time last year — at least, not all of them.
What’s the most hypocritical thing you’ve done with your fame? The first line you sing in “Royals” is “I’ve never seen a diamond in the flesh,” but surely you have by now. Well, I have, because my
mom got engaged to my dad, so I’ve seen one of those now! That’s a real thing! She had never had a diamond ring before! ... But to be honest, I try to live as normally and simply as I can, because it’s still kind of weird to me, all the extravagance you see in this business. I don’t really buy anything. I still think $100 is a lot of money, because it is a lot of money! It seems kind of crazy to just change your standards and your minimums and maximums just because you have more of stuff. I don’t know. I try not to think about money and stuff like that. I mean, I bought myself a bid, which was pretty great.

You bought a what? A bed!
Out of all the experiences you’ve been a part of in the past year, what stands out the most? People always ask me that, and I often struggle to find something because when you are in these crazy situations every day, you just have to find a way to make them normal, because if you don’t, you’re just going to go insane.
Oh, sorry, with your accent I thought you said “a bid.” Do you ever have time to sleep in this new bed? Yeah, I do. I’ve probably slept

How about Springsteen covering you? That was like the most amazing thing that has ever happened to me! [Laughs] Now you’re bringing up all of these things and I’m realizing that these were really big deals. I maybe cried and got super emotional. I was like, “It’s all coming full-circle!”
Bonus question
What’s next? There’s a line in “Tennis Court” where you say: “Everything’s cool when we’re all in line for the throne, but I know it’s not forever.” Are you talking about fame there? That line was more in reference to knowing that what I had with my friends — and what

Marital saga. Alfred Molina and John Lithgow get hitched then split up in ‘Love Is Strange’ John Lithgow and Alfred Molina play Ben and George, a couple of 40 years who finally get married — only to have George lose his job, forcing them to sell their Greenwich Village apartment and shack up in different homes. The lowdown: In 1937, the film “Make Way for Tomorrow” also depicted an old couple forced to live
apart, due to social security not yet being in existence. Apart from being a tear-jerker, it was propaganda. This isn’t. Though George loses his job due to persecution, most of “Love Is Strange” depicts not only the heartache of separation, but the feeling of being a bothersome guest in someone else’s home. Ben and George share few scenes together. In fact, Ben spends most
of his time in his relatives’ Brooklyn apartment, unknowingly getting on the nerves of a novelist (Marisa Tomei) who tries to hide her frustration at being constantly distracted by him. Tomei isn’t a monster, though she is passive-aggressive, allowing her rage to fester until it threatens to reach a boiling point. Director Ira Sachs (“Keep the Lights On”) occasionally lets the story go in
“The Identical.” / FREESTYLE RELEASING
The lowdown: Being unique doesn’t automatically equal being good. This is an almost admirably crazy, low-budget Christian production, one made all the weirder by having somehow attracted actual talented actors. Newbie Rayne is not one of them; he’s a wet blanket who fades into the background. But Ray Liotta, as the fiery preacher who adopted Ryan, brings moments of real pathos. There’s even a germ of a good idea
overly convenient directions. (The way in which one of the central problems is solved is so openly circumstantial that it essentially gets a pass.) But he’s more interested in tiny notes. This is a very gentle film, cruising on the notes of Chopin piano pieces and quietly observing two actors who’ve spent their careers playing big, hammy villains, here allowed to do lots without doing much at all. here, tracing what it’s like to be the non-famous brother of a superstar. “The Identical” just takes it in a bizarre direction, having Ryan become not another singer, but an Elvis — sorry, Drexel Hemsley — impersonator. For what it’s worth, this religious picture isn’t particularly preachy, save a scene where Liotta launches into a spittle-heavy sermon about defending Israel. Comic legend Joan Rivers died Thursday at Mount Sinai Medical Hospital in Manhattan following complications during a routine procedure. She was 81. Born Joan Alexandra Molinsky, the show business legend once shared with Metro that her foray into the entertainment industry was fraught with challenges from the very start: “My parents threw me out of the house when I told them I wanted to be a comic, so I had to sleep in my car and shower at the Y.” “Of course,” she later quipped, “once I became famous, they were happy to take

and later won an Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host for her daytime gabfest “The Joan Rivers Show.” The Tony-nominated actress also wrote 12 best-selling books, appeared in numerous films and was the subject of a critically acclaimed 2010 documentary, “Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work.” Rivers once told Metro: “If you’re really lucky, you get one moment in this business when you’re white hot. I’ve been very, very fortunate, I’ve had a few.” After she appeared on “Celebrity Apprentice,” Metro asked her if she ever thought she was too old to try anything new. I am writing this message to bring attention to a problem. We all have to share and be able to live in this environment. People who suffer from allergens are having a hard time just being able to breathe, to just take in air. When people who are unaware put on their perfumes and cologne, please be aware that thousands of us can’t breathe because of your indulgences. Think before you over-use these products.
Re: ‘Creepy hackers release creepy naked celeb photos for the Internet’s creeps’ (Metro, Sept. 2) I compare it to leaving your car unlocked with the keys in the ignition. Of course it’s your car, and of course the guy who steals it is a thief, and of course you’re the victim. But you’re also a dummy. You should know better.

iCloud hackers are sex creeps Re: ‘Creepy hackers release creepy naked celeb photos for the Internet’s creeps’ (Metro, Sept. 2) The problem with the argument that is being used a lot in regards to Internet privacy is that it takes away any repercussions and blame from the morally depraved people who invaded the privacy of the celebrities and basically says, “Well the lock on your diary wasn’t good enough so it’s your fault I read it.” Privacy should be respected, and we should
not be blaming the victim(s). It doesn’t matter if their password was weak, a good person never would have leaked the photos. Instead, they committed a criminal offense on the level of being a sex crime. I think it shows just how normalized sex-related offenses are and just how disturbed our society is. We’re so willing to invade other people’s privacy and blame them for it. AMBER BAUER, VIA EMAIL

Patriots storylines to watch vs. Miami
NFL. The Patriots open their 2014 season against the Dolphins this Sunday.
There was really just one day of doubt. On March 12, cornerback Aqib Talib signed with the Patriots’ direct rival for AFC supremacy, the Denver Broncos. But on March 13, the Pats responded with a megaphone, shouting to the rest of the league that Darrelle Revis was still the best corner in the game. The New England defense is expected to be much improved with Revis in tow and with Vince Wilfork and Jerod Mayo both returning from injury. The offense is expected to remain elite as well, with Tom Brady under center for his 15th NFL season. Though Brady was working with a number of inexperienced receivers last season and with his main target, Rob Gronkowski, banged up for the majority of the season, the Pats still averaged the third most points per game in the NFL at 27.8. The Patriots’ 2014 journey begins this Sunday, as they invade Miami Gardens, Florida to take on the Dolphins (1 p.m., CBS). Here are a few things to watch for: MATT BURKE @BurkeMetroBos
Wake and bake
It wasn’t too long ago that CBS commentators would say things like, “Wait a couple years until Cameron Wake and this Dolphins defense matures. They’ll be a force to be reckoned with.” Well, Wake is 32 years old now and Miami hasn’t made the playoffs since the former Canadian Football League defensive player of the year signed a deal with the Dolphins in 2009. Make no mistake, however, Wake is still a dominant force, making the Pro Bowl in three of the past four years. The Patriots will again have

to pay particular attention on to the defensive end on Sunday, nday, particularly with their of-fensive line in flux after the trade of Logan Mankins. It will surely be a long g afternoon for the New England O-line no matter what as they must adjust to the baking Miami heat. The forecast in Miami Gardens on Sunday calls for an 89 degree day with 75 percent humidity and scattered thunderstorms. The Pats left for Florida a day early this week, seemingly to get adjusted to the heat.
The Boston College Eagles begin ACC play Friday night as they host the Pitt Panthers at Alumni Stadium (7 p.m., ESPN). Both BC and Pittsburgh got off to strong starts last week as the Eagles took down UMass 30-7, while the Panthers absolutely demolished Delaware 62-0. The BC defense will need to contain Pitt’s rushing attack as the Panthers had three players rush for over 77 yards last weekend. James Conner led the way for Pitt, with 14 carries for 153 yards and four touchdowns. MATT BURKE
No doubt, Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill wants to get off to a strong start in 2014. The former Texas A&M star has flashed signs of greatness in his first two years in the league but — as much as it can in lax Miami — the pressure is on him to take the next step. The Fins want to reach the postseason for the first time since 2008 (their only playoff appearance of the past
MLB
Sox look to play spoiler vs. Jays this weekend The Red Sox (61-78) will open up a six-game homestand Friday night when they welcome the Toronto Blue Jays to town for the first of three games. Toronto (71-67) is still in the AL wild card mix, having won four games in a row as of Thursday. The Sox are slated to have Clay Buchholz, Rubby De La Rosa and Joe Kelly start the games in succession this weekend. METRO

12 years) and there have been small improvements year-toyear as they have gone from 7-9 in Tannehill’s rookie season to 8-8 last year. Tannehill doubled his touchdown total from 12 to 24 from 2012 to 2013 but his interception total climbed as well, from 13 to 17. It will be interesting to see how much pressure the Patriots will put on Tannehill in the season opener as the Dolphins have, literally, an entirely new offensive line. According to the Palm Beach Post, Miami will be the first NFL team in 10 years to have five new starters on its line.
Much of the off-season banter in New England has been centered around Revis and — as always — Brady. But there are several players on the Patriots roster that are poised to flip the talk in their direction. Defensive end Chandler Jones was somewhat snubbed last year in his quest to land on the AFC Pro Bowl roster, but in his third year, and with Revis now in the secondary, there’s reason to believe his numbers could jump once again. Jones had six sacks in his rookie year of 2012 and bumped that number up to 11 1/2 last season. His tackle total also climbed from 24 to 40. Slot receiver Danny Amendola could also have a breakthrough season. Despite being injured nearly the entire year, Amendola’s three 100-plusyard receiving games in a single season was a careerhigh mark.

NFL. Manning says he’ll play until he ‘sucks,’ too
Peyton Manning took a cue from Tom Brady this week. / GETTY IMAGES
The Tom Brady-Peyton Manning rivalry will go on until further notice. When asked how long he would be an NFL quarterback, the 38-year-old Manning echoed what Brady said earlier in the week. “Brady said he was going to play until he … sucked,” Manning told ESPN. “That’s a pretty good line. I’m kind of the same feel. I don’t have a set number ... If you can really produce and help a team, and you enjoy playing, I think that’s up to the individual.” MATT BURKE
Johnny Trademark
Manziel files for trademark Brian Hoyer will be taking the snaps for the Browns this Sunday when Cleveland faces Pittsburgh but backup Johnny Manziel isn’t worried about his “brand” taking a hit. Manziel’s company, JMan2 Enterprises, filed for its 10th trademark this week, the latest being “Johnny Cleveland,” which would likely be plastered on T-shirts and sneakers if it’s approved. Manziel’s company has also filed to trademark “Johnny Football,” “JFF” and “The House That Johnny Built.”
