More than 30 fast-food workers were arrested in New York City on Thursday after walking out of their jobs and striking at two McDonald’s locations in Manhattan. Protesters who work for franchises such as McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King, KFC, Domino’s and Papa John’s rallied outside McDonald’s at 220 W. 42nd Street in the morning, then later at McDonald’s 946 8th Ave. location, demanding a $15 minimum wage and right to unionize. A spokeswoman representing fast-food workers said those who were arrested by police were practicing civil disobedience by sitting down in the middle of the street. The New York fast-food workers were joined by St. Louis workers who traveled to the city, due to the events in Ferguson. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman released a statement Thursday morning supporting the fast-food workers asking for higher pay. “It is time to say unequivocally that nobody who works 40 hours a week should have to live in poverty,” Schneiderman said, adding his office will continue to “stand up for worker’s rights.” WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE

Bloomberg returns as head of company Manhattan. The former mayor is taking over the reigns of his old company. Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg will return as head of Bloomberg

LP, the data and financial news company he founded in 1981, replacing Daniel Doctoroff who has decided to step aside, the company said on Wednesday. The privately held company, in which Bloomberg is the majority shareholder, said Doctoroff would step aside as president and chief executive at year-end.

Bloomberg, whose fortune is estimated at more than $32 billion, had expected to spend much of his time on philanthropic efforts after leaving office in late 2013. Those efforts have included fights for public health and gun control. “This is a sad day for me and my company,” Bloomberg said in a state-

ment. “I really wanted Dan to stay and continue in his leadership role. But I understand his decision.” Bloomberg, who stepped down as New York mayor last December, added that he “never intended to come back to Bloomberg LP” after 12 years as New York’s mayor. REUTERS

TOO SOCIAL IN ELECTION SEASON With the mid-term elections rising, PR flacks from left, right and center are flooding my inbox with stories about how good their candidates are, how bad the opposition is and the importance of social media. This is a runaway theme in D.C. Everyone from the White House down seems obsessed with rounding up Facebook “likes” and retweets with inane messages like, “Share this if you believe in freedom!” Honestly, this faith in the power of social media goes beyond the capital. Even terrorists seem convinced if they can just “friend” enough followers, their cause is all but won. I imagine them huddled around their smartphones: “Look how nice the cave looks on Instagram!” Social media outlets have become critical to spreading news, starting movements and sharing stolen pictures of naked celebrities. And yet the wheat-to-chaff ratio is surprisingly weak. Sure, once in a while I’ll get a meaningful report on someone’s performance in office, but usually I just get spurious diatribes about alleged scandals ... or a

video of a dog playing the bagpipes. I can’t do anything about this nonsense, but I’m taking precautions against helping it spread. I’m limiting my cyberpresence, easing up on the retweeting unless I am sure of the source and cutting back on the number of folks I’m subjecting to my social media stream. My personal Facebook friend count stands at a tidy 600. How I let so many onto the list remains a mystery. When I ask my wife she will only say, “Hot Saturday night and a bottle of schnapps.” Anyway, I think that’s enough. Any new requests are being met with this message: “I’m sorry, Tom’s Facebook is full. You’re encouraged to apply for membership again next year! Meanwhile, please accept our complimentary offer to follow Tom on Yik Yak.” It’s working. A colleague just walked in and said, “Is Yik Yak a thing?” Yeah, it’s a thing. Like all the other social media “things” purporting to share “news” this election season, but which ought to be trusted no more than rumors.

Study. Stressful jobs can lead to diabetes even without risk factors Cortisol

Not a coping problem

Call centers are a high-demand, low-control environment for workers. / GETTY IMAGES

When it comes to type 2 diabetes, a stressful job can be as risky for your health as a bad diet and no exercise. A new German study found that even without the classic typical factors for type 2 diabetes — obesity, family history, high blood pressure and cholesterol, inactivity — people working too many hours with little control over their tasks were over 60 percent more likely to develop the disease than unstressed workers.

The findings add to substantial evidence that job strain represents a serious health risk on its own, researchers say. “What we first suspected was that job strain might be related to lifestyle variables — that people who are under high job strain would smoke or maybe eat unhealthy food more — but this was not the case,” says lead study author Karl-Heinz Ladwig, of the Technical University in Munich. REUTERS

Past research has linked highly demanding jobs with low control over how the work is done to heart disease and death, attributed to a mix of physical wear-and-tear from the chronic stress and unhealthy coping behaviors. In the new study, over 5,000 nondiabetic Germans were followed over 12 years, during which almost 300 cases of type 2 diabetes had developed. The largest proportion (almost 7 percent) came from the high job-strain group, even after controlling for other factors. That suggests stress itself is the culprit, likely due to the hormone cortisol, which can alter how blood sugar is regulated.

Still being ‘DeMented’ Retrospective. John Waters fires off quips as he talks about Lincoln Center’s first-ever complete retro of his crazy films.

Once upon a time, John Waters made people angry. Today he’s a Broadway legend, he does spoken word shows, he regularly files time as a raconteur and even had a best-selling book this summer (“Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America”). A complete retrospective showing of his films — the first in the U.S. — should change that. It starts Friday at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, ranging from more recent classics like “Cecil B. DeMented” to such shocking nasties as “Pink Flamingos,” “Female Trouble” and “Desperate Living,” which once played this city in crazier times. New York City’s underground and midnight movie circuit was pretty late to screen your films. I didn’t really show any of my films till after “Pink Flamingos”

became a hit at the Elgin Theater. Certainly New York has made up for it, because that played there forever. In the beginning, the underground New York scene was completely New York-based. They were kind of snobby about it. If you weren’t in that school, basically you weren’t really doing anything. How often did you come up here from Baltimore to see movies? I always came. I had a girlfriend — it was that long ago — and we would make up fake sorority weekend permission slips for our parents to sign. We’d go to New York on the Greyhound Bus. I pierced my ear once on the Greyhound Bus and blood was shooting out everywhere. And at underground movie houses, people were taken away in paddywagons seeing these movies. The

screenings were raided. It was so exciting. It’s much better than stadium seating. Being taken away in a paddywagon from a movie — that’s going to the movies. How do you view your very first films, which are screening in this series? Like juvenilia — like if someone found your diary from when you were 14 and read it. [Laughs] I’m mortified, but I love that they’re playing the Lincoln

Center, because they only played once in the entire world, and the second time is at the Lincoln Center. That’s kind of funny. You’ve gained a new, much more wholesome audience with the “Hairspray” and “Cry-Baby” musicals. Were they shocked when they found your old films? They were in the beginning. But I’ve made so many other movies. You know what you’re getting when you go see a John Waters movie. And I don’t make anybody mad anymore! No matter what I say, they just laugh now. Maybe they think I’m senile, I don’t know. Are you sad about that? No. It’s hilarious. Are you kidding? I won! MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

An education (sort of) You actually studied here, at NYU. I only went to one class. It wasn’t NYU’s fault. I shouldn’t have gone to any school. I knew what I wanted to be. I went to 42nd St. every day, I took LSD, I was not a student.

And they wouldn’t have let me make the things I wanted to. No school would have. I’m not against NYU in any way. I’m sort of against them when I walk past the Joseph Weinstein Dormitory, where the scene of my crime happened. A very young John Waters STEVE YEAGER

The setup: Among the three early 8mm shorts screened, this one follows a nanny who likes to kill people with cosmetic products.

The setup: Waters’ first feature with synch sound — “Mondo Trasho” features a soundtrack of novelty songs — hangs with a traveling freak show that likes to rob and even murder their patrons.

The setup: Waters’ breakthrough was one of the first earthshaking midnight movies; it depicts the filthy battle between two sects of horrible people.

The setup: Divine plays a runaway teen who becomes a thief who becomes a media icon whose shtick is shouting obscenities while jumping around on a trampoline.

Most horrific act: There are so many, but the coda, in which Divine eats some dog poo, is probably the only one we can mention in print.

Most horrific act: It’s not graphic, but one scene has Divine being assaulted by a man also played by Divine — a movie first (and last)!

Most horrific act: In one gratuitous sidetrack, the Kennedy Assassination is recreated, complete with Waters’ most famous star, Divine, playing Jackie O.

Ways to look back on ‘Forrest Gump’ Visit Metro.us to learn about how the author was almost ripped off.

In 1994, the movies belonged to “Forrest Gump.” It was the year’s highest-grossing film, and it took home six of the 11 Oscars for which it was nominated, including Best Picture and Best Actor. (It was Tom Hanks’ second consecutive win, after “Philadelphia.”) But 20 years is a long time, and one era’s monster hit is another’s dated embarrassment. Now that it’s being re-released in theaters, in IMAX for some reason, here are five ways to look at “Gump” two decades down the line. MATT PRIGGE

Are Your Legs Suffering From... Varicose Veins Leg Ulcers Spider Veins Pain Restlessness

Heaviness Swelling Itching Fatigue Cramping Burning

Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) is probably talking this poor woman’s ear off about chocolates. / PARAMOUNT PICTURES

As the victim of a backlash

As a conservative beacon

By the time the Oscars came in March 1995, there were two kinds of Americans: those who embraced the sweet “Gump,” and those who were crazy for the darker, more innovative “Pulp Fiction.” “Gump” won the battle over “Fiction,” but it lost the war. While it ranks 14th on the Internet Movie Database’s user-voted bestever list, that’s nine slots behind “Fiction.” Today “Gump” is a critical punching bag — a sign the Oscars always go with the safer choice.

In Winston Groom’s novel, Gump is a rougher character: He swears, he has sex. Eric Roth’s screenplay sands Gump down; he becomes the embodiment of all that is decent about America, a guy who fights for his country while BFF Jenny embraces hedonistic hippiedom and pays a price. The counterculture is depicted as evil; the SDS guy beats women. It’s easy to read “Gump” as portraying that right-wing canard about the failure of the hippies to impact lasting change.

12

As a bastardization of a novel

As a pioneering technological achievement

34

There are a lot of changes from Groom’s novel, including the look. In the book, Gump is 6-foot-6, 242 pounds; Groom imagined John Goodman for the role. Hanks is a lean 6 feet tall. Here’s that rare time when a drama, not a sci-fi or action film, had radical special effects. Its main achievement was seamlessly integrating modern actors into archival footage. Tom Hanks mills about with John F. Kennedy, moons Lyndon Johnson and hangs with John Lennon. It’s an incredible, unnerving feat. It made manipulating images of movie stars, dead or alive, seem fun and futuristic, not creepy and unsettling.

‘The Identical’: What the hell is this religious film about Elvis that stars real actors? •••••

Never mind the title; “The Identical” is an original. Blake Rayne — a Web designer making his screen debut — plays Ryan, a man who’s actually the super

secret twin of a singer who looks like Elvis, sounds (sort of) like Elvis but actually has the much catchier name of Drexel Hemsley (also Rayne). The lowdown: Being unique doesn’t automatically equal being good. This is an almost admirably crazy, low-budget Christian production, one made all the weirder by having somehow attracted actual talented

actors. Newbie Rayne is not one of them; he’s a wet blanket who fades into the background even when playing the increasingly bejeweled and long-haired (but never fat) Not Quite Elvis. But Ray Liotta, as the fiery preacher who adopted Ryan, brings moments of real pathos, as does Joe Pantoliano, in a rare friendly role. There’s even a germ of a good idea here, tracing what it’s like to be the non-famous, un-

known brother of a worshipped superstar. “The Identical” just takes it in a bizarre direction, having the also musically gifted Ryan become not another singer, but an Elvis — sorry, Drexel Hemsley — impersonator. For what it’s worth, this religious picture isn’t particularly preachy, save a gratuitous scene where Liotta launches into a spittle-heavy sermon about defending Israel. It’s the nicest trainwreck you may ever see. MATT PRIGGE

“Memphis” is a full-on mood piece, lathering its loose plot over a series of disjointed and mesmerizing scenes. But it is about something. Beal’s unnamed troubadour radiates the same mystique Robert Johnson once did: It’s as if he has talents that come from the supernatural and is ready to create the future of music. Some of this mystique is self-made: He tells someone he considers himself “a wizard.” But when it comes time to put his talents on record, or even create music to share with the world, he can’t get it together. How genius manifests itself, emerging from the head and into the real world — how people actually make their ideas

••••• happen — is what “Memphis” considers. It rarely articulates this notion, but rather observes as someone who very well could be a master — and Beal himself is an accomplished musician with a new album — struggles to get himself together. Instead, he gets distracted by friends, by lovers, by his own temptations, by his own lack of money, while filmmaker Tim Sutton paints his struggle in mesmerizing, often one-take mini-movies. It’s a heartbreaking look at literally staggering genius. MATT PRIGGE

Ways men screw up first dates

CHARLES J. ORLANDO

Relationships should be equal. But when it comes to dating — especially first dates — things are different. Dating is where men step up and show their interest in someone. But some men either don’t know or don’t show that they understand or accept this concept: Equality or not, courtship is primal. She wants him to pursue, and he needs something to chase. Here are the most common screw-ups men make on the first date in pursuit of the chase.

Re: ‘Creepy hackers release creepy naked celeb photos for the Internet’s creeps’ (Metro, Sept. 2) The problem with the argument in regards to Internet privacy is that it takes away any blame from the morally depraved people who invaded the privacy of the celebrities and basically says, “Well the lock on your diary wasn’t good enough so it’s your fault I read it.” Privacy should be respected, and we should not be blaming the victim(s). It doesn’t matter if their password was weak, a good person never would have leaked the photos. They committed an offense on the level of being a sex crime.

Celebration

Jeter receives honors Sunday

The ceremony to honor Derek Jeter will begin prior to Sunday’s game against the Royals at 1 p.m. The team has said fans should be in their seats by noon. The ceremony will feature former teammates, family members and what the Yankees bill as “special guests.” The team will wear a patch honoring Jeter beginning Sunday and through the end of the season.

Jeter steps away on his own terms MLB. The Yankee captain will be honored this weekend as the final weeks of his career commence.

As he enters the final weeks of his illustrious career, Derek Jeter is going out on his own terms. So while this weekend officially begins the “retirement celebration,” Jeter insisted on talking about being focused on getting the Yankees to the playoffs one more time before he begins life as a former ballplayer. “I want to win. That’s it. It doesn’t get any more complicated than that,” he said. “When you’re playing, you want to win. That’s the mindset I’ve always had, that’s the mindset I’ll have until my last game. I enjoy competing, and when you compete, you want to win. That’s the last thing I want to do.” Hall of Famers have different ways of going out, and when he made the announcement in February, he knew it was time, especially after repeated injuries in 2013 made coming to the ballpark feel like a chore. “I think you just realize it,” Jeter said. “I don’t know if there’s necessarily a magic formula that tells you it’s time to retire. I just felt like this

was the right time for me. I’ve done it long enough, I look forward to doing other things, so I decided this was going to be my last year.” Even if Jeter finishes this season well below his .310 career batting average, his last year is going better than some other

Yankee greats. Babe Ruth finished his career in Boston, Mickey Mantle languished for seasons as a shell of his former self and Yogi Berra was released after 1963. The Yankees have retired every single-digit number besides Jeter’s No. 2.

And while that may or may not happen Sunday — the Yankees deny it — you can bet it’ll be done how Jeter wants it.

Jeter will finish his career sixth on the all-time hits list. But he has played fewer seasons than anyone in the top 16.

Jeter will most likely end up No. 10 in runs scored in MLB history. And he’ll pass teammate Alex Rodriguez (just three ahead) in doing so.

Jeter passed Robin Yount for seventh all-time in at-bats. He’ll finish there, one spot behind Eddie Murray.

Never a bad word

Big Papi reflects on decade-long rivalry playing against Jeter David Ortiz gets booed before every at-bat at Yankee Stadium for being on the Red Sox. It has been that way for the last decade, ever since Ortiz emerged as a Yankee killer. But even with Yankee fans’ contempt for the slugger, Ortiz shares their reverence for Jeter. “For me, of course, he stands for the New York Yankees,” Ortiz said before Jeter opened his final home series with the Red Sox on Tuesday. “He’s one of the greatest of all time. It’s definitely going to be different not seeing No. 2 on the field.” Ortiz said he has never heard a negative comment about Jeter in his 18 seasons in baseball. The two often joke around when Ortiz is on second base. “Winning takes him to another level,” Ortiz said earlier this season. “He’s a winner, plus he’s a really good human being.” LARRY FLEISHER

Stories to watch as Jets face the Raiders

But Tom Coughlin and his sta have been researching the Lions’ new coaching sta for months. “They have a new coach, Jim Caldwell, at the helm in Detroit and with new coaches, new coordinators, we have spent a lot of time trying to study and predict,â€?
