Alleged ISIS social media manager has local roots Stoughton. Ahmad Abousamra grew up on the South Shore and attended college in Boston. John Scialoia recalls his Xaverian High School classmate Ahmad Abousamra as a “nice kid,” which is a far cry from someone who is now accused of creating social media propaganda for the world’s most feared jihadist. Multiple media outlets are reporting that Abousamra may
be a driving force behind the social media strategy of Islamic State. Abousamra, a 32 year-old who grew up in Stoughton and attended Northeastern University and UMass Boston, landed on the FBI Most Wanted Terrorists list last December. There is currently a $50,000 reward for information that leads to his capture. Scialoia recalled Abousamra as being insightful, smart and friendly when both attended the Westwood school during the 1990s. “He hung out with the nerdier crowd — the ones that got straight A’s and would say in-

would want someone else killed. I got along with him just fine.” A federal warrant for the arrest of Abousamra has been outstanding since 2009, after he was charged with a litany of offenses that alleged he provided material supports to terrorists and conspired to kill in a foreign country. In 2009, he was indicted along with Sudbury native Tarek Mehanna, who was ultimately found guilty of four terrorism-related charges. Abousamra, however, fled the country in 2006, according to the FBI. The FBI contends Abousamra went to Yemen and
Pakistan to try and join extremist groups in those countries. Kieran Ramsey, an FBI assistant special agent in charge, indicated Abousamra became radicalized after high school, between 2001 and 2004. Ramsey declined to confirm or deny the media reports detailing Abousamra’s alleged role with Islamic State. Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, President Barack Obama indicated he would detail his plan to deal with Islamic State on Wednesday. DANNY MCDONALD @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

A Mattapan man took his own life Saturday as he was confronted by police who were investigating the death of his young son. Patrick Marcelin, 49, stabbed himself to death in an apparent suicide as Boston Police detectives attempted to question him at a Morton Street apartment around 4:30 p.m. Marcelin’s son, 6, was found in cardiac arrest around 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Devon Street home of Marcelin’s girlfriend. The child, who police did not name, had been in Marcelin’s care, though the father went missing following the boy’s death. Police increased search
efforts after a family member said Marcelin threatened to hurt himself, and they eventually tracked him down to 815 Morton St. According to police, Marcelin answered the door with a kitchen knife in his hand “and began to injure himself.” “Placing themselves in harm’s way, detectives made heroic efforts to disarm him, took the knife away, and called for medical assistance,” police said in a statement. Marcelin was rushed to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Neither his death nor his child’s are expected to result in charges, police said. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

GETTING BACK YOUR SECURITY DEPOSIT My landlord called to say that he is withholding a portion of my security deposit due to damages, but he will not show me anything in writing. Is he allowed to do this? Your landlord is required by law to provide an itemized list detailing deductions for damages within 30 days of the tenancy’s termination. If your landlord fails to do so, you are lawfully entitled to three times the amount of the deposit you are legally due, plus 5 percent interest from the date the amount was due, plus court costs and reasonable attorney’s fees. It is a good idea to take “before and after” photos of the condition of the property when you move in and when you leave to have on-hand in case the landlord makes deductions from the security deposit that you want to challenge. Always look around carefully for anything in questionable shape at the start of your tenancy and record whatever

The more up to date you are on tracking your transactions, the earlier you are able to detect fraud, the more likely you will be able to minimize its damage. Career. Rivers was known for her raspy voice, and the catchphrase, “Can we talk?” Family and friends bid farewell to Joan Rivers, the outspoken comedian who became famous around the world for her acerbic wit and brash style, at a private funeral on Sunday in Manhattan. Journalists Barbara Walters and Diane Sawyer, comedian Whoopi Goldberg, tycoon Donald Trump, actress Sarah Jessica Parker and comedian Kathy Griffin were among the celebrities who attended the service at Temple Emanu-El, a landmark synagogue on New York’s Fifth Avenue where Rivers, 81, was a member of the congregation. As guests exited the service to the sound of bagpipes, and some mingled and hugged,

many hundreds of fans, along with dozens of reporters, photographers and television crews waited behind barricades to get a glimpse of Rivers’ friends and family, including her only daughter, Melissa. Lisa Johnson, 45, who drove five hours from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with her sister to be there, said she was a lifelong fan of the comedian. “I grew up watching her.
And I have always thought she was just the most hilarious, trailblazing pioneer for women’s comedy, women in general. I just love her irreverent take-no-prisoners kind of style. She says exactly what she feels, she offends people and owns it,” Johnson said. The sharp-tongued, Brooklyn-born comedian jokingly wrote about wanting an elaborate funeral. REUTERS

Q&A. The actor is happy to be in something as nakedly positive as “The Identical.”
Since he first started acting as a child, Seth Green has been a diverse performer. He may be mostly known for comedy, like “Robot Chicken,” “Austin Powers” and “Family Guy,” but he also spent three years on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (despite being cut from the 1991 movie) and regularly does serious voicework in cartoons. “The Identical” seems unusual even for him: It’s a quasi-religious musical drama, in which he plays a drummer and the best friend of a man (Blake Rayne) who’s actually the secret twin of an Elvis-like superstar. You’ve played musicians before. Oz on “Buffy” played guitar. You’re character here is a drummer. Have you drummed before? Not really. My friend Breckin is a drummer, and when we were teenagers he showed me some basic things that I then continued to quasi-practice, whenever the radio was on. But I never really played the drums. I had a coach and we decided that instead of me learning how to play drums he would teach me how to play these songs. I looked at the songs like choreography. Was music what really drew you to this film, or was there something else? This story uses Elvis so it can create an allegory about nature vs. nurture. Blake spends the entire movie feeling like

there’s something missing in his life and he can’t explain why. And then he finds he has a twin, and not only that, that he loves music and feels inclined to sing — that he needs to perform and doesn’t feel comfortable unless he’s doing his thing. This is a relatable story, growing up and feeling like your life is not yours. It’s such a magical thing when you’re able to chase the thing that defines you — when you do what you’re supposed to be doing here.

This is definitely one of the nicer films you’ve done. [Laughs] I do a lot of comedy stuff, and comedy by present cultural definition is somewhat
cynical, especially in the last 20 years. All of the kids who grew up with the incredibly sincere messages of the ’80s have spit them back out as post-ironic self-awareness. Then that has informed the younger generation, who have grown up almost without empathy. [Laughs] Just a very entitled, digital generation who don’t know how to interact with each other in real life. It’s a strange time. So I like being a part of positive things. This movie is so sweet and heartfelt — and all the opportunities it has to be trite, it’s just sincere. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge
“It was one of the craziest things I’ve ever experienced. There was this sensation created around this catchphrase that had nothing to do with me as a person or as a performer. It made me take the whole notion of celebrity a little less seriously.” When he was 17, Green acted in a commercial for the fast food joint Rally’s where he said “Cha-Ching.” The catchphrase took off and he suddenly found himself super popular — sort of.

THEATER
The long-running “Lion King” musical is a well-oiled machine at this point. The show first premiered in November of 1997 and returns to Boston for the third time this week. But to keep that machine running, a lot of little pieces have to come together. A vital part of that machinery is the elaborate masks and puppets that the actors wear to bring the world of the savannah to life. Keeping those masks in working order requires three people on repair duty, and one on call during performances, because like any complicated machine, the masks often have little problems come up during use. “I have my walkie-talkie and my head lamp, and the things that I carry with me all the time are scissors and wire cutters and a hex key and pliers,” says puppet assistant Sue McLaughlin. Talking to McLaughlin is a bit like talking to a professional “MacGyver,” since many repairs have to be done on the

fly. The oddest material she’s used to get a performer back on the stage? Telephone wire. “There wasn’t time to run back to the shop to get a nut and screw that were the right size, so I slipped the wire through the holes and sent [the actress] back out for the next scene, and she was good to go.” That was for one of the hyena masks. “They have jaws that open and close and one side of her jaw hinge had come apart and we had very little time to fix it,” explains McLaughlin. Some of the masks go beyond mechanical hinges, though. “The Scar mask has two motors and a battery and wires that run through a finger control that he wears in the palm of his hand,” says McLaughlin. What happens if the battery dies onstage? “Occasionally it will blow a fuse,” admits McLaughlin. “The electronics are actually worn on his thigh, and they’re hidden by his leather chaps.” LISA WEIDENFELD

Altuzarra
Prabal Gurung
“Rosemary’s Babyâ€? is as much a fashionista’s dream as it is a cinephile’s: ’60s shift dresses, little-girl nightgowns and (of course) Mia Farrow’s iconmaking Sassoon haircut. But for his runway ri on the ďŹ lm, Joseph Altuzarra eschewed such tired tropes. Instead, he seized on its heroine’s kinky, subversive sweetness for one of his best collections to date. The show opened with a series of seersucker skirt suits and dresses in angelic pink gingham, but with thigh-high slits and seams sliced open and held together with ribbon. Things got hotter from there: wispy sweaters with plunging necklines, peek-a-boo lattice leather skirts and tops, and sheer black negligee dresses. Rosemary’s transition from naif to quintessential Altuzarra woman ended, however, in an explosion of romantic color and light: with delicate, wispy, crinkled dresses in golds and corals that communicated freedom, power and a conďŹ dent sensuality.
Prabal Gurung kitchen-sinked it — for good reason, though. Inspired by his native Nepal — the snow-capped Himalayas, the “lush hillsides dotted with wild roses and rhododendronsâ€?— the designer threw in every beautiful detail he could get his hands on. Shimmering beads, ostrich feathers, intricate hand-painted lace and cascading rues all made appearances. Yet look past the melange of embellishments and another theme jumps out: the tango between the sporty and the feminine. Black-leather strips toughened up breezy, printed dresses; sinuous shawl-like lapels softened sharp tuxedo jackets; and the ďŹ nale of chion evening gowns had athletic tank bodices. Visual overload? Yes. But streetstyle stars need something to peacock in. TINA CHADHA

Myths that stop women from getting an MBA
PLUS
5 Funding
It’s too expensive “Women are very riskaverse,” says Sangster, noting that many women balk at the hefty price tag attached to most MBA programs. She reminds students that organizations such as the Forte Foundation provide assistance for students as they navigate the financial aid process and decide on the best program for both their academic needs and their wallets.
Don’t let these misconceptions stop you from getting the degree you want.
For generations, business schools have been seen as male-dominated environments filled with aggressive overachievers. While the focus on achievement and new ideas is probably true, a new generation of advocates say that more women should seriously consider pursuing MBAs in order to achieve their career goals. “It’s interesting, I think the thing that deters women from getting MBAs is often a misunderstanding of what an MBA is,” says Elissa Sangster, the executive director of the Forte Foundation, which encourages and supports women in business schools. Sangster shares these five misconceptions that she says many women have about pursuing an MBA. LAKSHMI GANDHI @LakshmiGandhi
You won’t have any support One of the biggest advantages of getting an MBA or any other graduate degree is that as soon as you graduate you will be a member of your school’s alumni network. “The attention paid to the alumni network and having them as coaches and mentors [can be a key to success],” says Sangster. She advises students to begin attending events featuring alumni while still a student in order to make those connections.

You feel like you won’t fit in
It’s crucial to take the time to find the program that is the right fit for you. Not all MBA programs are the same, and it’s important to see if the current students in the
programs you are interested in are taking classes and getting internships (and jobs) at the companies you’re interested in working for. Doing this legwork is especially important if you want to go into a specialized field.
Sangster observes that many prospective female students may think that getting an MBA means that you automatically have to go into the stock market or into a corporate job. “But an MBA can help you get where you want to go, whether that is in nonprofits, media and entertainment, or whether you are an entrepreneur or want to go into consulting,” says Sangster.
Checklist. Applying to grad school? Make sure your paperwork is in order Check our sample list below for everything you’ll need for a (relatively) stress-free application process. CV or résumé: While a résumé is the standard form used in the U.S., CVs are becoming more common. Academic transcripts: Remember to request them from your undergraduate college well before your grad school application deadlines.
Join us for an information session on September 10 or October 1 at 5:30 p.m. Learn about our MBA and MS degrees in accounting, finance, international management, and information technology. www.umb.edu/managementinfo Being organized and having a game plan will make things go much more smoothly. / PHOTODISC
Personal statement: The personal statement is crucial in that it allows admissions personnel to get to know who you are as a person while also letting them know how your experiences have prepared you to succeed.
References: Make sure that you let your references know well in advance that they need to write a recommendation or might receive a phone call. The last thing you want is for your reference to be caught off-guard. Graduate school test scores: In general, most scores are valid for around five years, and some institutions require receipt of these scores prior to the processing of the application. Application fees: These fees can add up if you’re applying to multiple programs. Don’t hesitate to ask the admissions office about a fee waiver or reduction. Many programs have some flexibility. Blame the criminal, not the victim
Celebrities have no right to privacy because the public simply must know
Re: ‘Security works best by being smart about it’ (Metro, Sept. 5-7) Letter writer Kim De Riel has the analogy all wrong. It’s more like parking your car in your garage, locking the door, locking the keys inside, and then having someone break in and steal them anyway. Hardly makes the victim a “dummy,” as she puts it.
that celebrities do not have privacy. For people like you and me, who cares if we fight with our in-law in the elevators? Who cares if we have a new boyfriend or girlfriend? Who cares if we are pregnant or we have lost 10 pounds? All these are private matters, but not for the celebrities; if we have to know all this information about our celebs, let us also know how they look like when they are naked or without makeup! Paparazzi is a well-known profession in Western countries that, by definition, does not respect our celeb’s privacy.
Re: ‘Creepy hackers release creepy naked celeb photos for the Internet’s creeps’ (Metro, Sept. 2) I would like to say two things: Primo: we have to stop our collective hypocrisy and be honest and acknowledge
AMY MULLEN, VIA EMAIL
Secundo: Who is morally depraved? Those taking naked photos and sex tapes and posting them on the Net, or those hacking the celeb’s passwords? What’s the difference when a celeb is paid $1 million by a magazine to publish his or her naked photos or a hacker posts them on the Net? JEAN KAZADI, VIA EMAIL

Miami roughs up Patriots in second half NFL. New England finds itself in dead last place in the AFC East through one Sunday.
What went wrong
A look at where the Patriots stumbled on Sunday:
In the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady era, the Patriots have been known for making great halftime adjustments, most often “winning” the second half. That script was flipped big-time in Miami Gardens, Florida Sunday, as the Dolphins blanked the Patriots in the second half and won going away, 33-20. The Pats led, 20-10, at halftime but the Dolphins began chipping away in the third quarter. Caleb Sturgis drilled a 24-yard field goal, Mike Wallace hauled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Tannehill and Sturgis connected on a 22-yard field goal to take the lead away from New England by the time the fourth quarter began. A four-yard TD run by Knowshon Moreno with 3:29 remaining in the fourth and another Sturgis field goal closed out the scoring for the Dolphins. The last time the Patriots
•
A solid fourth quarter drive never came. Down 23-20 with 14:02 left, the Pats went three-and-out with Tom Brady being sacked at the Pats’ own 27-yard line on third down.
•
Down by 10 with 3:29 left, Brady threw three straight incompletions to “start” a drive and on fourth down he was sacked by Cameron Wake. Wake had two of the Dolphins’ four sacks.
•
The Pats got a mixed bag performance out their returning and new faces. Rob Gronkowski played 38 of 86 snaps, but most came in the first half. “Gronk” had four catches for 40 yards and a TD. The Darrelle Revis-led defense registered an interception early (Alfonzo Dennard), but Knowshon Moreno (134 yards) ran wild on the unit.
lost a season opener, they lost just one game the rest of the season. The Pats were blown out in Buffalo in Week 1 of 2003, but ultimately wound up with a 14-2 regular season record and won the Super Bowl. In the days following that initial loss, Pats coach Bill Belichick took plenty of heat for dumping popular safety Lawyer Milloy days before the season began. Belichick will no doubt have to drown out criticism this week as the Patriots’ offensive line looked brutal in their first regular season game since trading popular guard Logan Mankins to the Buccaneers. Tom Brady was sacked four times Sunday and the O-line looked all out of sorts in the second half. It remains to be seen if a 2003-like turnaround is on tap, but things will have to improve next week in Minnesota (1-0) if the Pats want to get back to the .500 mark. MATT BURKE @BurkeMetroBos

Rumor forever following Rondo NBA. The start of the NBA season is still over a month away, but the Rajon Rondo trade rumors persist. Depending on who you talk to, Rajon Rondo is either halfway out the door or holding that door open for the next star to join him in Boston. He’s either a bad apple or the apple of the Celtics’ eye. He’s a bad shooter or too good of a passer. You get the idea: There’s a Team Rondo and a Team Anything But out there, so let’s go over some real, hard facts.
Rondo is heading into the last year of a contract that pays him $55 million over five years. At 28 years old, he’s due for the last major contract of his career and is reportedly looking to cash in. He’s also coming off of a season in which he returned from a torn ACL and played in 30 games. Understandably so, his production dipped a bit last season (11.7 points, 9.8 assists, 5.5 rebounds). Here are the spots Rondo will most likely be a year from now:
Boston Celtics This is the obvious choice.
CLASSIFIEDS
Rondo is the team’s best player, he’s at least said all the right things publicly — including that he would be open to staying with the Celtics for the long run — and the Celtics have said all the right things back. The C’s can offer Rondo more money than any other team, but the question still remains if they want to. They didn’t draft Marcus Smart to ride the bench, and Danny Ainge is very high on Avery Bradley too.
Sacramento Kings The most constant rumor involving Rondo and a potential

trade is with the Sacramento Kings. The Kings’ front office is dead set on making themselves contenders as soon as possible, and Rondo could be the best player available to them this season. Pairing Rondo with DeMarcus Cousins could be a great thing or the beginning of a disaster. The Kings could offer a package centering on Ben McLemore. Rudy Gay could also be on the way out.
New York Knicks/ Detroit Pistons Neither of these options feels like a great fit in a trade. That’s the big problem overall with getting anything for Rondo: finding a team that wants him and has something the C’s want back. For New York, keep an eye on Iman Shumpert and Tim Hardaway Jr. For Detroit, Greg Monroe could be the guy out next season. JAMES TOSCANO @metrobos sports@metro.us

Falcons 37, Saints 34 Matt Ryan and Drew Brees engaged in a classic shootout Sunday, with Ryan coming out on top. The Falcons QB hit on 31-of-43 passes for a franchiserecord 448 yards and three touchdowns as Atlanta took the early lead in the NFC South.
in Pittsburgh as the Steelers held a 27-3 lead at halftime, but Cleveland coach Mike Pettine held firm with starter Brian Hoyer, and it nearly paid off. Hoyer and rookie running backs Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell led a furious comeback as Cleveland had the game tied at 27 with 11:15 remaining in the game. But solid play by Ben Roethlisberger allowed Shaun Suisham to kick a 41-yard, game-winning field goal as time expired.
Jets 19, Raiders 14 Chris Ivory’s 71-yard, fourth quarter touchdown and a stingy defense allowed the Jets to get off to the start they wanted to in 2014. Jets QB Geno Smith hit on 23-of-28 passes for 221 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Texans 17, Redskins 6 Houston ended the 2013 season having lost 14 straight games but 2014 is looking much rosier. Arian Foster rushed for 103 yards on 27 carries. Bengals 23, Ravens 16 A.J. Green’s 77-yard touchdown grab with 4:58 remaining in the fourth quarter got the Bengals over the hump in Baltimore.
