Cops to be retrained in wake of Garner’s death Manhattan. Commissioner Bill Bratton was grilled by Council at a hearing on Monday. All 35,000 New York City Police officers will undergo a new three-day training session on how to de-escalate confrontations and use force without injuring suspects. Police Commissioner Bill Bratton revealed details of the training at a Council hearing on Monday. Previously announced as part of the NYPD’s response to the death of Staten Island man Eric Garner while in police custody, the training course is expected to be frequent, with comparisons made to the firearms qualification tests. Preliminary figures estimate the training will cost

New York City’s top cop said the Police Department needs more feet on the ground months after protesting City Council efforts to increase the NYPD head count. At the hearing, Commissioner Bratton warned lawmakers he would ask for money to pay for 1,000 more officers. “We are in the process of closing in on those numbers, that it will be in excess of 1,000 additional officers we will be looking for,” he told the Council.
$25 to $30 million. Advocates hope that the transparency translates to public access to whatever curriculum is used. “Force can be deadly, as we saw in the Eric Garner case,” said Candis Tolliver, an assistant advocacy director with the New York Civil Liberties Union. At the hearing, Bratton refused to support any legislation that would make chokeholds illegal. Asked by Councilman Rory Lancman what failure in police training has led to arrests with chokeholds, Bratton objected to the word “failure” and the “allegation” of more than 1,100 chokehold complaints with the Civilian Complaint Review Board. “Chokeholds are not illegal,” Bratton said. “They are not against the law.” CHESTER SORIA @chestersoria chester.soria@metro.us

our watch shouldn’t cost more than your car. It should look and feel like a power tool and not a piece of bling. Wearing it shouldn’t make you think twice about swinging a hammer or changing a tire. A real man’s timepiece needs to be ready for anything. But that’s just my opinion. If you agree, maybe you’re ready for the Stauer Centurion Hybrid. Use your Exclusive Insider Promotional Code below and I’ll send it to you today for ONLY $59. This watch doesn’t do dainty. And neither do I. Call me old-fashioned, but I want my boots to be leather, my tires to be deeptread monsters, and my steak thick and rare. Inspiration for a man’s watch should come from things like fast cars, firefighters and power tools. And if you want to talk beauty, then let’s discuss a 428 cubic inch V8. Did I mention the $59 price tag? This is a LOT of machine for not a lot of money. The Stauer Centurion Hybrid sports a heavy-duty alloy body, chromed and detailed with a rotating bezel that allows you to track time and speed. The luminous hour and minute hands mean you can keep working into the night. And the dual digital displays give this watch a hybrid ability. The LCD windows displays the time, day and date, includes a stopwatch function, and features a bright green electro-luminescent backlight. We previously offered the Centurion for $199, but with the exclusive promotional code it’s yours for ONLY $59!
No matter what, this watch can keep up. Thanks to the Stauer 30-day Money Back Guarantee, you’ve got time to prove it. If you’re not totally satisfied, return it for a full refund of the purchase price. You also get a 2-year replacement guarantee on both movements. But I have a feeling the only problem you’ll have is deciding whether to keep the Stauer Centurion on your dresser or tucked inside your toolbox.

Politicians push for Zadroga reauthorization 9/11. Parts of the bill that provide benefits to first responders is set to expire next year. Thirteen years after the Sept. 11 attacks, state and local leaders are urging Congress to extend a law
that compensates first responders and survivors of the terrorist attacks. Steps from the World Trade Center, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand was joined by Mayor Bill de Blasio and Reps. Peter King, Carolyn Maloney and Jerry Nadler in support of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. Named after a NYPD officer who died in 2006

from an illness attributed to fallout from the attacks, the law was approved by Congress in 2010. Parts of the $4.3 billion bill are set to expire in 2015. “For Congress to not continue to fulfill its undeniable moral obligation by reauthorizing these programs, they will close and our government will have turned its back on these heroes,” Gillibrand said.
Supporters of the law said more than 30,000 responders and survivors from the day of the attacks have an illness or injury directly or indirectly caused by Sept. 11. More than two out of three of those require treatment for more than one ailment. Both the House and Senate will see bills introduced before October. “Why is there a quesYonkers

Man dies after saving boy who jumped into Hudson
Cops arrest five men in stabbing death
A 40-year-old man died Sunday night after jumping into the Hudson River near the JFK Marina in Yonkers to save a child. Boyce Coleman jumped in after the 6-year-old boy fell into the water to pull him to safety. Coleman, however, went missing in the water. NYPD divers assisted Yonkers Police in recovering Coleman’s body from the river.
Five suspects have been arrested after allegedly stabbing a 23-year-old Brooklyn man to death on Sunday and stabbing another victim, according to the NYPD. Officers responded to 887 Myrtle Ave., in Bedford-Stuyvesant, at 2 a.m. on Sunday where they found the stabbed men. Five suspects were later arrested on charges of second-degree murder.

Your primary focus is your suicide awareness project, Live Through This. What is it and how much time do you devote to it? Live Through This is a series of portraits and stories of suicide attempt survivors. It’s a mix of photography and oral history. I meet with an attempted survivor, have him or her tell me his or her story, and then I make a portrait. ... I also write articles about suicide awareness and do speaking engagements. I spend about 60 hours a week on it. Do you generate a source of income through it? If I get donations or sell merchandise, it all goes back to the project in a separate bank account. The only money I keep for myself is from the speaking engagements. How do you pay your bills? I work part-time as an administrative assistant at a

university, which pays really well. I also rent a second room out in my apartment on Airbnb, which pays the bills through the summer and spring months. I also work as a photographer. What is your dream career scenario? I really want to continue to work as a suicide awareness advocate because the voice of people who have attempted suicide has been almost completely absent, and I can bring art to that, too. Tech. Will the new smartphone live up to the hype? The iPhone 6 is expected to be announced today, which means that eager techies have already predicted what Apple will announce in their highly secretive junket. Among the most popular rumors is that the iPhone will get slightly bigger, boasting a 4.7-inch screen instead of the standard 4 inches. There’s also rumors that there will be a second, even larger 5.5inch model. With the larger sizes comes a larger price tag. The jumbo model is expected to retail at $299. However, the larger phone will supposedly come with a flat sapphire crystal display to prevent cracked screens and a new 128GB

storage option, in addition to other upgraded features. People will be able to get their hands on either phone later this month. While it’s groundbreaking territory for the iPhone to have two different sizes, Jack Narcotta, analyst at Technology Business Research, Inc., said the com-
pany is simply playing catch-up to its competitors who already offer bigger screens, like the Samsung Galaxy Note and other Android models. “It’s more noteworthy (no pun intended) that Apple will likely be offering iPhone users a choice. The real story should be Apple’s expanding iPhone product line, not so much the focus on the screen’s dimensions,” he pointed out. MICHELLE CASTILLO michelle.castillo@metro.lu

There is no interest paid on balances of $0-$2,499. APYs disclosed effective as of July 1, 2014. APYs may be changed at any time at the Bank’s discretion. Funds used to open this account cannot be from an existing Apple Bank account. **Special bonus feature: A .25% simple interest rate bonus will be paid on each anniversary date of account opening on the lowest balance for that year (anniversary date to anniversary date). No bonus is paid if the account balance is less than $2,500 on the anniversary date. Additional deposits during a given anniversary period do not affect the bonus interest payment. Deposits made to the account on any anniversary date will be used to calculate the lowest account balance for the next anniversary period. The bonus interest is calculated on the lowest balance on deposit from one anniversary date to the next anniversary date. Simple interest rate bonus is subject to change at any time after first anniversary date of account opening. Hypothetical example of how bonus works: Assume an account is opened on July 1, 2014 for $50,000. A $10,000 withdrawal is made on February 15, 2015. No other withdrawals are made prior to the July 1, 2015 anniversary date. The low balance is now $40,000, so $100 in bonus interest will be paid on July 1, 2015.

The Baltimore Ravens released Ray Rice on Monday after a video surfaced showing the three-time Pro Bowl running back punching his then-fiancee during an argument earlier this year. also took action against Rice. “Commissioner Roger Goodell has announced that based on the new video evidence that became available today he has imposed an indefinite suspension on Ray Rice,” the league said in a statement. An NFL spokesman said the league had not seen the new video before suspending the 27-year-old Rice for two games, a punishment widely seen as too lenient. “We requested from law enforcement any and all information about the incident, including the video from inside the elevator,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an email to Reuters. “That video was not made available to us and no one in our office has seen it until today.” REUTERS

PERSONAL FINANCE
Words that lead to financial success I have done much in my life; I made my ďŹ rst million before I was 22, wrote a best-selling book by age 26 and helped to create two millionaire students. But in addition to investing and teaching, I’m also an avid reader. Here are what I’ve learned are the three most important words to get ahead.
The world is a vast and mesmerizing place to be explored and experienced. Saying yes when opportunities arise will allow you to expand your mind and comfort zone, and I promise that you will see, taste, hear and smell things that will only enrich you and make you a much more well-rounded and interesting individual.
Word No. 1: Yes
Word No. 2: No
Say yes to trying new things and meeting new people. Far too many people are narrow-minded and live their lives without ever giving life a chance to surprise them.
Saying yes is great, and it will open many new doors to you, but sometimes you must also say no and close some of those doors. You must learn your limits or your life and your

↑ ↓ The U.S. stock market is reaching new all-time highs every day after a dip in August. Be careful as September and October have been dangerous in the past.
A growing number of stock market bears have made every case possible for an upcoming crash, and yet the indices keep ticking higher. It’s never paid to be a long-term bear of the U.S. — you’d think they would’ve learned by now!
adventurous, fun-loving personality will be cut short. For example, while I like to keep an open mind, I don’t enjoy anything that risks great loss, injury or death, such as diving with great white sharks (as I was oered to do in South Africa) or buying into a potentially revolutionary new technology that has just become a penny stock. Be smart and meticulous, and always weigh the risk against the reward before blindly agreeing to something. If it makes you truly uncomfortable, just say no!
Word No. 3: Maybe
For exclusive commentary, c visit Metro.us/blogs. Life isn’t so simple that every decision can be made with a quick yes or no; there’s a wide gap in between that calls for a “maybe. This is my favorite word because it allows you to pause, consider all your options and choose the absolute best course of action. This is particularly helpful in the stock market, as there are risks and rewards to every investment. To get the best possible outcome, consider all the variables before making a decision.

Prince William and Middleton play with George, who will soon have a “backup.” / GETTY IMAGES
Great news for everyone except Prince Harry, who now takes yet another step back in the British monarchy’s line of succession: Kate Middleton is pregnant once again, carrying her and Prince William’s second child, Kensington Palace confirms. Also confirmed: Middleton is once again suffering from very acute morning sickness and is being treated by doctors. But now at least
Harry will have a real job to do in coaching his upcoming niece or nephew how to best serve as “the backup” — as his late mother, Princess Diana, used to call him. I imagine he might also have some useful advice down the road about London nightlife, hangover cures and what questionable Halloween costumes to avoid. Visit www.metro.us for reactions from royals
fans outside Buckingham Palace.

Lots of additional happy romantic news to report today: George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin have chosen a location for their impending nuptials and Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka disclosed that they secretly tied the knot over the weekend. Let’s start with Clooney: The nuptials of the proverbial bachelor will take place in a couple of weeks in Venice, Italy, according to E! News. Clooney apparently used his time at the podium during the recent Celebrity Fight Night in Italy Gala in Florence to fill everyone in on his and Alamuddin’s plans,

including where and when they’ll tie the knot. “He said he is an honorary 12-year resident of Italy and then said they were getting married in Venice,” an attendee reports. As for NPH and DB, their nuptials were in Italy, thought it was not disclosed what part. Harris tweeted, “Guess what? @DavidBurtka and I got married over the weekend. In Italy. Yup, we put the ‘n’ and ‘d’ in ‘husband.’”

MASTERS & PHD FAIR
From ‘Dexter’ to ‘Hedwig’
Speaking of NPH, you remember how for like a month this summer Harris starred in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” on Broadway? He was replaced by Andrew Rannells last month and yesterday it was announced that Rannells will be replaced by Michael C. Hall! The actor best known as the serial killer “Dexter,” will play the lead role from Oct. 16 through Jan. 4.

Everyone’s getting married in Italy
In response to the usual calls of “Who are you wearing?” during Fashion Week, pop troublemaker Miley Cyrus can respond, “No one!” She showed up to a top secret NYFW after-party looking very NSFW: She only wore a pair of pasties and pants. Let’s just be glad she didn’t follow that Chanel fashion rule of taking one item off before leaving the house.
‘View’ from the top can be nasty
Tensions are finally calming over at “The View” between Whoopi Goldberg and returning tablemate Rosie O’Donnell. You may have read gossip that “Whoopi and Rosie hate each other. They’re constantly at odds,” as a source had recently told Radar Online. So what’s caused the ease of tensions? Apparently Goldberg has been in talks with ABC about leaving within the next two years, and O’Donnell can just wait her out. “Surprisingly, Rosie has decided not to rock the boat. She’ll let Whoopi be the queen bee. Rosie knows she has ABC completely on her side.” Sounds like a fun place to work.

Does Jon Stewart have a secrete dark side? How he compares
Stewart versus Colbert
Rogak says Stewart has been preoccupied with ďŹ lming “Rosewater,â€? about journalist Maziar Bahari, right, and less focused on “The Daily Show.â€? / GETTY IMAGES
Unauthorized biography. Lisa Rogak explores the lesser known side of Jon Stewart in her new book, “Angry Optimist. He’s one of the most popular guys on TV and comes across as not only funny, but genuinely kind. But Lisa Rogak, who profiles Jon Stewart in her latest unauthorized biography, “Angry Optimist: The Life And Times of Jon Stewart, says the TV personality has a dark side that would surprise his fans. It should be noted that Rogak never interviewed Stewart or visited the set of “The Daily Show, but instead pulled information from many, many articles and interviews about him and talked to some people who have worked with him or knew him growing up. And while she does point out some positive traits, the shock lies in the revelation that Stewart is bitter and a hermit. “The angst of working on the set [was exposed] a few years ago, and in a response to that, a PR person at Comedy Central contacted Bark magazine to do a story on how staff members could bring their dogs to work. It was like, ‘Let’s just stop the attention from
all the angst, inner conflict and “bad boss stories,’ Rogak says. Unlike many celebrities, Stewart hasn’t been lured in by the Hollywood scene and is rarely seen at red carpet events or parties. While he is presumably a happy family man, Rogak has her doubts about Stewart’s wife, Tracey McShane. “I found one quote where she said she was anxious all the time, Rogak reports. “[Stewart] is angry all the time, but he believes everything will turn out for the
better, and a part of that is his Jewish sensibility. ... I think they both share a great, grand insecurity. As for what she thinks is next for Stewart, Rogak predicts that it all depends on how the movie he directed, “Rosewater, is perceived. “It just seems like he is going through the motions [with ‘The Daily Show’] and not taking a lot of risks like he used to, she says. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he were to announce he was leaving the show. You heard it here first.

Rogak, who has written more than 40 books including biographies of President Barack Obama, Stephen King and Shel Silverstein, says Stewart could not be more dierent from Stephen Colbert, someone else she released a biography about. “When I was working on [the Colbert book], everyone went out of their way to say he’s a gentleman and a genuinely nice man,â€? she says. “When I was doing the research on Jon Stewart, nobody used those terms.â€?

Riding with death Bikers. As “Sons of Anarchy” enters its final season, the fate of the motorcycle club lies with its heartbroken, revenge-seeking president. Will anyone survive? Death is a way of life for the outlaw bikers of “Sons of Anarchy.” Still, the show surprised many with the murder of series regular Tara (Maggie Siff) at the end of Season 6, and now tragedy — and betrayal — hit the club harder than ever. The group’s president, Jax (Charlie Hunnam), is hell-bent on revenge in the series’ last 13 episodes; in teasers for the final season of the FX drama, he’s even seen morphing into the Grim Reaper.

phrenic state,” Hunnam says. “He’s obviously very, very sad and vulnerable and kind of broken, but there’s a huge amount of vengeance and anger in his heart. At least in the very beginning … he knows what he wants to do, but he can’t get away from the fact that the love of his life has just been taken from him.” Jax certainly didn’t see Tara’s gruesome deathby-carving-fork coming, but neither did series creator Kurt Sutter — at least not in its minute details. Though he has always had a sense of where he wanted the series to end, Sutter says he was better off playing exact storylines by ear. Even in the middle of writing the final season, Sutter admits he isn’t exactly sure where his characters will take him episode by

I came in with how I wanted the season to end, which will be obviously the end of the series. … But things change with different story ideas. So it’s always sort of been heading in the same direction, but the way I’m getting there continuously changes.” One thing we know: Sutter has been hinting heavily that other members of the gang might not make it through the finale — and there aren’t that many left to begin with. At its most basic level, a rock band can be thought of as a family, a group of people collectively devoted to a cause. When a band member passes away, even at a band’s genesis, it hits hard. Benjamin High, who was only part of New Jersey indie rock band Cymbals Eat Guitars for less than a year, died seven years ago. Though front man Joe D’Agostino has said that he’s thought about his friend every day, he is only now dealing with the loss of High through his songwriting on the band’s latest album, “LOSE.â€? “I met Ben at a house show in New Jersey in 2006, my last year of high school. We immediately clicked and became best friends through AOL Instant Messenger, just talking about music, hanging out and playing music together. And then he ended up playing bass in Cymbals Eat Guitars for a little bit,â€? says D’Agostino. D’Agostino’s close relationships are important to him. In between crosscountry tours, he lives with

After the first two Cymbals albums — which explored unusual arrangements, psychedelia and eschewed choruses or repeated lyrics — didn’t have the commercial returns they hoped for, the band decided to experiment with accessibility. The result is a record that includes harmonicalaced cuts (“XR), melancholy ballads (“Child Bride) and guitar pop (“Lifenet). All are held together by D’Agostino’s soulful voice. “I wanted to couple the heavy subject matter with music that would make it reach people and tell the story that is really important to me, and to many of my friends who knew Ben and his family, Top tips for Disney World
Fastpass+
With the old Fastpass, guests could reserve a spot in line while they went to enjoy other attractions. Fastpass+ is an updated version: The ticket-dispensing kiosks have been replaced with an electronic system so you can book before leaving home, choosing up to three Fastpasses for each day of the visit (that number can change depending on demand and season).
Kim Wright Wiley and Leigh Wiley Jenkins, authors of Fodor’s annual “Walt Disney World with Kids” guidebook, are the ultimate Disney World experts. Here are their top tips for a successful vacation with the whole family.
When to go Our favorite times to visit are September and early December. With the exception of Labor Day, September is the least crowded month to visit and early December doesn’t yet have the crowds, but it does have the holiday shows and decorations. The parks run slightly shorter hours in the off-season, but since there are fewer people, you can still easily

tour a park in a day.
Where to stay Onsite Disney hotels are usually more expensive but allow quicker access to the parks. Offsite hotels have lower rates, but you have to drive to the parks or rely on their transportation, which can consist
of only a few buses per day. If you find a good deal and have a car, consider staying offsite. Otherwise, onsite is your best bet.

Parenting hacks. Family dinners made easy — seriously Family dinners are supposed to be a time when everyone puts his or her phone away, asks about everyone’s day and enjoys a relaxing meal. But if you’re a parent, you know that isn’t exactly what happens. What’s more likely is that you come home from work tired, your kids are asking you what’s for dinner,

Must-stop places to go before school
Getting your kids ready for back-to-school is no easy feat. I have put together a #BTSLYSST of some of my must haves and things to do to get ready for the new school year.
The kids’ hair cutting pros My boys head straight to Cozy Cuts For Kids on Third Avenue for their hair cuts. They have plenty of ways to keep kids entertained while getting their cuts, like video games and DVDs. Plus, they have a new hair line out called So Cozy so you can keep your children’s hair looking FabULyss throughout the school year.
Our exclusive Fibrex material was researched by Andersen for 30 years before it was installed in even one home. Our Fibrex material is twice as strong as vinyl.
I love reading books with my kids throughout the school year. One book series I’m really enjoying with my kids right now is the “Mother’s Art World series. It’s a collection of books that introduces young children to the world of art. My kids love the stories, characters and gorgeous illustrations.
Many parents ask me if it is better for kids to walk or bike to school each day. I’ve found the perfect solution in the Micro Kickboard. My two boys are obsessed and cannot wait to scoot o to school in style. The Micro Kickboard helps teach kids balance and coordination as well as how to steer, speed up and slow down.

Bring on the drama Reviews
Tommy Hilfiger
1
The flower crowns and boho dresses that dominate Coachella’s free spirits are so over. Tommy Hilfiger looked to the ’60s and ’70s music-festival girl to show you how to rock out in style. With a set designed like Woodstock, complete with a live drummer and floral lined runway, Hilfiger sent down sleek, fitted military-inspired suiting in burgundy and black with pops of gold — oh how very Sgt. Pepper
lime and nude — just as varied and unique as the residents that make up this town. TC
Opening Ceremony
It’s safe to say that no other presentation this week can top Opening Ceremony’s spring outing Sunday evening, which wasn’t a runway show but a play written by director Spike Jonze and actor Jonah Hill. As for the play — about the drama of cobbling together a spring collection hours before showtime — it was fun. The all-star cast included Elle Fanning, Dree Hemingway, Bobby Cannavale, Karlie Kloss, Rashida Jones, John Cameron Mitchell and Catherine Keener, who played exaggerated versions of the label’s two founders, Humbert Leon and Carol Lim. There were lots of in-jokes, but also some moments of honesty, particularly about the industry’s cruel treatment of models. Oh, there were clothes onstage too, apparently inspired by the summer of 1991, and the “innocent, hazy dreams of suburban life” that characterized the two designers’ youth. The structural patterns and shapes were modeled after early computer codes, while the colors — light pink, ceramic green and cerulean — evoked a swimmingpool-in-the-yard kind of feeling.

Donna Karan tapped into the core of what makes New York so special: diversity. The designer culled from the city’s melting pot for bold geometric prints, colorful graphic stripes and ethnic paisleys that appeared on long, lean, often oversized silhouettes. As if there weren’t enough going on, the looks came layered: Mini skirts, such as a sequin embellished number, were thrown over long, striped tube skirts. The magpie effect worked, thanks to a sublime color palette of tomato red, navy, caress blue,

of him. The retro influence continued with flared patchwork denim, effortless tunics with belts slung low and mod suede shifts with stars patterns cut out along the hem. Elsewhere, the celestial motif appeared on big faux fur jackets (yes, for spring!), sheer chiffon gowns and a scallop-edge bikini, modeled by no other than Kendall Jenner, officially making her rounds on the New York Fashion Week runway. But the real scene-stealer: a colorful carefree striped crochet frock. Now that’s for a girl who stands out from the crowd. TINA CHADHA

Diane Von Furstenberg Here’s how you show New York City that you’re the most powerful woman in American fashion: have supermodel Naomi Campbell close your runway show. Ms. Campbell looked spunky in a white chiffon confection streaked with hot pink and orange. Otherwise, this was a pretty straightforward collection from Diane von Furstenberg, with lots of colorful prints, sexy silhouettes, bandeau tops and gingham, too, which is shaping up to be a trend this week. The look: Post-apocalyptic urban warriors The runway: The electrifing show sparked arguments about what it all meant: a response to Ferguson, a commentary on the breakdown of masculinity, a celebration of the individual? But designer Shayne Oliver also presented great, wearable clothes: endless variations on denim, leather bombers, deconstructed blazers and of course logo-emblazoned T-shirts and sweatshirts, some in a trompe l’oeil armor print.

Insta-worthy: The Great Dane on the runway! The takeaway: Expect the HBA cult to get bigger. RL
The look: Moody paradise The runway: Thakoon Panichgul’s vacation-enticing collection of relaxed silhouettes (languid robes, silky cropped pants and bare shouldered blouses) seduced in a variety of prints (bold Tahitian florals, sophisticated polka dots, cheery palm fronds) done in lush burgundies and blues.

Insta-worthy: The striped knit skirt with electric blue raffia fringe. No one will lose you in a crowd. The takeaway: Start researching a tropical getaway. TC

Obama needs to take charge Re: ‘We will “degrade and destroy” ISIS: Obama’ (Metro, Sept. 4) As I read the news story on President Obama’s address in Estonia, I noted Metro ran the “degrade and destroy” portion of what Obama stated to news reporters gathered around him, but it did not print the president’s response to a follow-up question as to how we will degrade and destroy ISIS. What the president said in response became the center of the whole news story. The president started off sounding like General Douglas MacArthur but ended up sounding like former President Jimmy Carter. Obama went from speak-
ing of destroying ISIS to seeking to “shrink” it into a “manageable problem.” Who’s in charge at the White House today? Back during Watergate, General Alexander Haig said he was. Now? No one is. ISIS acts with impunity. SAL GIARRATANI, VIA EMAIL

Giants stumble in ugly opening loss NFL. The Lions oense came out ďŹ ring as the Giants put up a dud, 35-14, in their season opener in Detroit. The only thing that looked more out of sorts than the Giants new offense was their secondary stumbling around the open field trying to cover Calvin Johnson. In the end it was equal parts offensive and defensive misery which brought the Giants a 35-14 loss in their season opener Monday night. The scene was ugly early on. Antrel Rolle, Stevie Brown and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie — a secondary which is supposedly the strength of the team — got turned inside out by Johnson for a 67-yard touchdown catch just 2:49 into the game. After a quick Giants three-and-out, Johnson was again wreaking havoc on the secondary with a 16yard touchdown catch to cap a nine-play drive. The brightest piece of the night for New York came from tight end Larry Donnell, who had a nice

Unstoppable — No one expected Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and the secondary to shut down Calvin Johnson, but it would’ve been nice to limit him to, say, one touchdown. Instead, he turned the Giants corners and safeties inside out all night.

Cilic takes US Open to secure first major US Open. The Croatian, who was suspended last year, capped an unlikely final with a dominant win. Marin Cilic played the U.S. Open final like he had an important dinner reservation in Midtown. Utilizing a massive serve and flat, powerful groundstrokes to every corner of the court, the 6-foot-6 Croatian destroyed Japanese sensation Kei Nishikori, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, in just one hour and 54 minutes to capture his first Grand Slam title. Cilic, 25, became the first Croatian to win a major title since his coach, Goran Ivanisevic, won Wimbledon in 2001. Cilic double-faulted on the first of three match points, but then smacked a backhand winner into the open court on the second before falling down on his back in celebration. He then made his way into his players’ box where he hugged his entourage, including Ivan-
isevic. “Everything I was working for and dreaming came [true] today and I feel for all the other players that are working. I think this is a big sign and big hope that if you’re working hard, things are going to pay off,” said Cilic, who had lost five of his seven previous encounters with Nishikori. Cilic picked up $3 million in prize money for the biggest win of his career and will move to No. 9 in the world, while Nishikori moves to No. 8. Cilic missed last year’s U.S. Open after testing positive for a banned supplement he said was given to him inadvertently by his mother. He missed four months on the tour but used that time to work with Ivanisevic on his game. “I truly believed he didn’t do anything wrong in the sense that he did [not do] it on purpose,” Roger Federer said after losing to Cilic in the semifinals on Saturday. “Was he stupid maybe? Maybe. But I feel like I know him well enough, and I don’t think he would ever do it.”

250-1
The odds of Marin Cilic winning the U.S. Open at the beginning of the tournament were 250-1.
6
Cilic will move up six spots in the world rankings, from No. 15 to No. 9, after the victory.
4
Nishikori came up short.
Cilic was suspended four months last year, including the U.S. Open, after testing positive for a banned stimulant.

The hard-serving Cilic’s fastest serve clocked in at 134 mph, while he sat in the 120- to 130-mph range all match.

Said Cilic after the biggest win of his life: “I think this is all hard work in these last several years and especially this last year. My team has brought something special to me, especially Goran. We were working really hard. Most impor-
tant of all the things that he brought to me was enjoying tennis and always having fun. I think I enjoyed my best tennis over here and played the best tennis in my life.” Seeded at No. 14 and No. 10, Cilic and Nishikori had set up the highly unlikely final between two men ranked outside the Top 10 by knocking off the top two seeds in the semifinals. Nishikori took out No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic in four sets on Saturday before Cilic crushed five-time champion No. 2 Federer in just one hour and 45 minutes. “He was playing really well today,” Nishikori said. “I couldn’t play my tennis. I want to congratulate Marin and his team.” ADAM ZAGORIA @AdamZagoria sports@metro.us
Considering it looks like both the Mets and Yankees will miss the playoffs in 2014, it’s not a bad time to move on to next year’s schedule. MLB released the 2015 schedule on Monday, and one of the more interesting notes was the strange timing of next year’s Subway Series. The Yankees and Mets will meet six times next season — as opposed to the now standard four — because the NL East and AL East are scheduled to meet in interleague play. But the series will come very early and very late in the season in 2015. The first three-game set will be held at Yankee Stadium from April 24-26. And then the two sides will meet again — theoretically in the heart of a pennant race — from Sept. 18-20 at Citi Field. The Mets open their season in Washington on April 6, with the home opener against the Phillies on April 13. The Yankees open at home against the Blue Jays on April 5. METRO
