Council to consider truck guard proposal Boston. Mayor Marty Walsh wants to make streets safer for cyclists. The Boston City Council today will consider a first-in-thenation initiative that would help protect pedestrians and cyclists against the deadly risk of falling under large trucks and getting caught under their massive wheels. The ordinance, filed by Boston Mayor Marty Walsh in partnership with City Councilor Ayanna Pressley, requires all large city trucks to be equipped with safety side guards and calls for blind-spot awareness decals and specialized convex and cross-over mirrors so drivers can have a better view. “After over a year of testing several different kinds of side guards in the field on 16 vehicles, data from studies and our own field observances have led to this ordinance,” Walsh wrote in a letter to the Council. Drivers who don’t comply face a fine of $100 for the first offense and potential termination of their city contract. Boston EMS responded to over 750 pedestrian traffic incidents in 2013. According to the 2013 Boston Cycling Safety Report, there were 1,432 confirmed cyclists crash incidents between 2010 and 2012. Just last month, a Hubway cyclist was struck by a city garbage truck in the South End. Fortunately the vehicle was outfitted with the safety guards, and the man survived. “This is a public health issue and it’s time for the city to lead by example,” Pressley

A confirmed tuberculosis (TB) case at a Lynn health center has triggered testing for more than 800 patients and 30 of the center’s workers. Lynn Community Health Center director Lori Berry confirmed to The Lynn Daily Item that one health care worker tested positive for TB around Labor Day. City Health Director MaryAnn O’Connor told the paper the confirmed case is ‘‘not a reason to panic.’’ TB is caused by an airborne bacteria that usually attacks the lungs, but can also affect the kidneys, spine and brain, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The disease can be fatal if not treated properly, according to the CDC. At one point during the 19th century, TB killed one out of seven people living in Europe and the U.S., although the number of fatalities has plummeted. In 2010, TB killed 569 in the U.S. DANNY MCDONALD

MS Oceans of Hope boat docks at Rowes Wharf Boston. The sport of sailing is helping people with multiple sclerosis conquer their individual challenges. With the wind at their backs, a small crew of determined sailors living with multiple sclerosis have spent the last five months adjusting their sails and empowering each other to look beyond their chronic disease and toward a brighter horizon. In May, the Oceans of Hope boat embarked from Copenhagen in the first circumnavigation of the world in a sailboat crewed by people with MS. Sailors hailed from Denmark and Portugal, with one Bostonian catching the boat in Bermuda. The journey was put together by The Sailing Sclerosis

There is a sense of a loss of identity,” said Anthonisen. “This project creates a narrative that’s strong. It’s about empowerment. The people in this boat have recaptured their identity.” Mikkel Farber, 46, of Denmark was diagnosed with MS three years ago, and said the Oceans of Hope sail has reinvigorated his outlook. “Since I was a little kid I always dreamed about crossing an ocean. Apple CEO Tim Cook unveiled the company’s latest smartphones at an event in Cupertino, California, on Tuesday. The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and its larger counterpart, the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus may be bigger than their previous counterparts, but Apple has managed to slim down the devices to 6.9 millimeters and 7.1 millimeters respectively from the 7.6-millimeter iPhone 5S. Other additions, including a barometer to measure elevation and an M8 co-processor to track motion data, further customize the smartphone for health and fitness apps. The features pair it perfectly with the company’s first smartwatch, the Apple Watch, due to be released in 2015, which was also announced Tuesday. The tech wearable can track biometric stats, but only works with a corresponding iPhone 5 or 6. Apple also introduced Apple Pay, the previously rumored mobile wallet payment system that uses nearfield communications (NFC). Malaysia: Dutch report suggests MH-17 was shot down from ground Malaysia Airlines. The crash occurred over pro-Russian rebel-held territory in Ukraine on July 17. Malaysia Airlines flight MH-17 broke apart over Ukraine due to impact from a large number of fragments, the Dutch Safety Board said on Tuesday, in a report that Malaysia’s prime minister and several experts said suggested it was shot down from the ground. Ukraine and Western countries accuse the rebels of shooting it down with an advanced, Russian-made missile. The main rebel leader repeated earlier assertions that his forces did not possess such weapons. The report said MH-17 crashed due to a “large number of high-energy objects penetrating the fuselage. “There are no indications that the MH-17 crash was caused by a technical fault or by actions of the crew, it said. Royal gossip: Dirty Diana?

Was Princess Diana not quite as nice as we might have thought? ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES

Royal gossip is hot now, right? What with that whole new royal baby thing. So get this: There’s a chance that the People’s Princess wasn’t so lovely after all, if unauthorized tell-alls are any indication. According to a new book about Prince Harry written by Penny Junor, the spare heir’s late mother, Princess Diana, had something of a dark streak when it came to dealing with her rivals. Case in point: Diana was so consumed with jealousy toward Camilla Parker Bowles that she would call Bowles’ country home and declare, “I’ve sent someone to kill you. They’re outside in the garden. Look out of the window — can you see them?” That’s some bold sauce, Di.

THE WORD Ned Ehrbar takes on the world of gossip.

I suppose this counts as personal growth: Taylor Swift’s songwriting has progressed from being about ex-boyfriends to being about ex-friends. Or at least this one new song, “Bad Blood,” is. And with any Swift ditty, the real fun comes in trying to decipher the secret subject, Swiftian wordplay be damned. “For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not. She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ‘Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?’” Swift tells Rolling Stone. “[Then last year] she did something so horrible. I was like, ‘Oh, we’re just straightup enemies.’ And it wasn’t even about a guy!” They are

never ever, ever getting facials together! So what was the last straw between Swift and her mystery frenemy? “It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me,” she says. “So now I have to avoid her. It’s awkward, and I don’t like it.” On a possibly unrelated (but probably not unrelated) note, when the interview went live, Katy Perry tweeted an ominous “Mean Girls”-inspired warning: “Watch out for the Regina George in sheep’s clothing...” Yikes!

NED EHRBAR

@Nedrick ned.ehrbar @metro.us

Charlie Hunnam is trying to get out in front of possibly only being remembered as the actor who quit “Fifty Shades of Grey,” despite memorable work in “Sons of Anarchy,” “Pacific Rim” and other projects. Hunnam infamously opted out of the racy novel adaptation after being cast as kinky Christian Grey, a decision he’s found he needs to justify.

Hot tickets. Jason Mraz has teamed up with Raining Jane before, but never for a full album. At this point, 12 years into his career as a coffeehouseturned-arena playing singer/ songwriter, Jason Mraz knows what works. He gets that his fans want a mellow, light rock album full of sticky-sweet love songs. So, when it comes time to record a new album, he doesn’t feel the pressure to reinvent himself. “I honestly feel that I’ve made the same record every time,” he says, unabashedly. That being said, his latest album, “Yes!”, a complete collaboration with the all-female folk rock band Raining Jane, is a bit different. Though Mraz and Raining Jane have met up to write songs twice a year for the past seven years, he says they didn’t plan to make an album. “We had no agenda other than just meeting up to write and have fun,” Mraz says. Some of the songs ended up on some of Mraz’s past albums, while others became hits for other singers, such as John Mayer. After a few particularly rewarding sessions in 2013, Mraz liked the songs so much, he decided to bundle them up into one album, that being the newly released, “Yes!” “It was a happy accident,” he says. “We didn’t actually know we were writing an album. I think that would have sounded a lot different had we sat around thinking, ‘OK, this has to be on the record.’” In Mraz’s opinion, every album should tell a story. Not surprisingly, the songs on “Yes!” tell a love story. It starts out recognizing that you do love someone. “[Then] there’s a little heartbreak, and we just have to accept what’s meant to be. There’s compassion in the love story. There’s forgiveness. There’s

acceptance. And the resolve is contentment, which is used to shine on.” Though Mraz is busy touring, he’s already writing new songs. “The best material is always the stuff that needs to be written,” he says. “It’s the stuff that comes out of emotion, passion and the need to express or interpret something.” From the sound of it, there’s no shortage of love stories left to tell. YouTube covers galore

He’s yours “It’s always an honor as a songwriter to see another musician take the effort to play your songs and embody the words. My favorite ‘I’m Yours’ cover that I saw was the little itchy nose kid playing the ukulele. He’s just sitting in his closet playing the uke and his nose is itching. He even played the diminished chord, which not a lot of people do!” If you go

Q&A NOOMI RAPACE IDENTITY CRISIS “The Drop” is another movie in which the actress looks completely unlike herself. It’s a little surprising to see Noomi Rapace in person as a blonde. And not just a blonde — she’s even got a streak of pink running down her braid. And gold necklaces and earrings shouting words like “boom.” It’s a far cry from her star-making work in “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” or even Nadia, the guarded former drug addict she plays in “The Drop” alongside Tom Hardy. And it looks like all that blonde hair is having an effect

Pushing the limits Is there anything a role has required that you’ve just thought was going too far? No, not yet. [Laughs] Although I did a movie called “Daisy Diamond” that was really quite far out. But when they do, their troubles begin: George is fired from his church school job, and they’re forced to sell their Greenwich Village apartment. One more tip

One design trend Schiada sees sticking around? Animal prints. No, not the leopard kind, but rather prints with animals on them. “Every year, for the past three or four years, there’s been like an animal of the moment,” Schiada says. Her pick for this year is the jellyfish, but you may see other deep sea creatures as well.

Ikea hackers, unite!

Keep it industrial

“I think upcycling or repurposing items is still really big,” says Schiada. “People want to get dual-purpose items. So card catalogs or turning an Ikea hack into something bigger is always really popular and seems to be getting bigger and bigger.”

Thinking of going for some broader home renovation? Schiada says the raw look is here to say. “The industrial raw look is definitely sticking around. Exposed brick, wide plank scraped floors, that type of style. Sort of the loftmeets-personal-home look,” explains Schiada.

H&M

Cozy up You were already planning on curling up under a warm blanket anyway, right? According to Schiada, that’s the right way to go. “People are adding a lot of textiles, a lot of warmth and throws and pillows. A lot of tone on tone texture. I see a lot of gray and white in black rooms, but they look great because they have all these extra sort of chunky knit textures.”

Choose colors that set the mood

Schiada says she sees olive making a comeback. Be on the lookout for “a very rich olive tone that’s not like your ’80s olive, but sort of like a gray-brown olive color.” But if you’re nervous about going olive, “Black and white is always really popular. Particularly as it gets colder, people are shying from some of the warmer colors.” CURTAINS, WEST ELM, $19-$29

5

Bring it inside “Now that the summer’s finished, and people aren’t spending quite as much time outdoors, they’re going to bring things in like moss and outdoor sort of textures and colors ... once the weather turns cold,” says Schiada. She recommends buying aged cedar wood or adding some succulents to your decor.

Return of the South End. Long one of the more desirable neighborhoods in the city, the region is seeing new development. Ten years ago, the South End’s burgeoning restaurant and arts scenes sealed the neighborhood’s position as Boston’s most coveted neighborhood. However, the South Boston Waterfront developments’ alluring promise of water views and modernism stole the grande dame’s thunder, as it became The Neighborhood to live in and hang out. But the classics never die, and the South End’s elegant Victorian brownstones and mature tree-lined streets are seeing a revival among developers and indie business owners. Next year, two massive mixed-use buildings are due to open: Ink Block, on the old Boston Herald site, brings 475 homes and a Whole Foods Market; Troy Boston on Traveler Street adds 416 apartments and more retail. Previously, Troy Boston codevelopers Gerding Edlen had only worked in Fort Point. “We are drawn to neighborhoods that have a vital arts and culture community,” says Kelly Saito, president of Gerding Edlen. “The appeal in the South End is the opportunity to provide something new and exciting in a previously underutilized corner of an established desirable neighborhood.” Last winter, The Chevron opened on Tremont Street on the site of The Olde Dutch Cottage Candy and Antiques store. The Chevron condos sold in the $3 million to $3.5 million range. “We could have sold another 20-30 units if we had them,” says developer Peter Georgantas, head of PEG Properties & Design. “The demand was that strong. There are five residential and two commercial units. All of the units sold prior to the building breaking ground.” Roosters Men’s Grooming Center, a classic barbershop, sits in one of the ground floor retail spaces: “Boston has so many vibrant and diverse neighborhoods that were each great options for our first Roosters,” says owner Tyson White. “I chose the South End for many of the reasons my wife and I love living here: The neighborhood has really emerged as a booming

NYFW: Bring on the drama Reviews

Tommy Hilfiger

1

The flower crowns and boho dresses that dominate Coachella’s free spirits are so over. Tommy Hilfiger looked to the ’60s and ’70s music-festival girl to show you how to rock out in style. With a set designed like Woodstock, complete with a live drummer and floral lined runway, Hilfiger sent down sleek, fitted military-inspired suiting in burgundy and black with pops of gold — oh how very Sgt. Pepper of him. The retro influence continued with flared patchwork denim, effortless tunics with belts slung low and mod suede shifts with stars patterns cut out along the hem. Elsewhere, the celestial motif appeared on big faux fur jackets (yes, for spring!), sheer chiffon gowns and a scallop-edge bikini, modeled by no other than Kendall Jenner, officially making her rounds on the New York Fashion Week runway. But the real scene-stealer: a colorful carefree striped crochet frock. Now that’s for a girl who stands out from the crowd. TINA CHADHA

Donna Karan tapped into the core of what makes New York so special: diversity. The designer culled from the city’s melting pot for bold geometric prints, colorful graphic stripes and ethnic paisleys that appeared on long, lean, often oversized silhouettes. As if there weren’t enough going on, the looks came layered: Mini skirts, such as a sequin embellished number, were thrown over long, striped tube skirts. The magpie effect worked, thanks to a sublime color palette of tomato red, navy, caress blue, lime and nude — just as varied and unique as the residents that make

Opening Ceremony It’s safe to say that no other presentation this week can top Opening Ceremony’s spring outing Sunday evening, which wasn’t a runway show but a play written by director Spike Jonze and actor Jonah Hill. As for the play — about the drama of cobbling together a spring collection hours before showtime — it was fun. The all-star cast included Elle Fanning, Dree Hemingway, Bobby Cannavale, Karlie Kloss, Rashida Jones, John Cameron Mitchell and Catherine Keener, the latter two playing exaggerated versions of the label’s two founders, Humbert Leon and Carol Lim. There were lots of in-jokes, but also some moments of honesty, particularly about the industry’s cruel treatment of models. Oh, there were clothes onstage, too, apparently inspired by the summer of 1991, and the “innocent, hazy dreams of suburban life” that characterized the two designers’ youth. The structural patterns and shapes were modeled after early computer codes, while the colors — light pink, ceramic green and cerulean — evoked a swimming-pool-in-the-yard kind of feeling. Diane von Furstenberg Here’s how you show New York City that you’re the most powerful woman in American fashion: have supermodel Naomi Campbell close your runway show. Ms. Campbell looked spunky in a white chiffon confection streaked with hot pink and orange. Otherwise, this was a pretty straightforward collection from Diane von Furstenberg, with lots of colorful prints, sexy silhouettes, bandeau tops and gingham, too, which is shaping up to be a trend this week. DIY. Alchemical Tech explains how to turn stones and bugs into pigments Our computers and smartphones would not operate without the materials developers used to create silicon-based integrated circuits. One way or another, chemistry underlies just about everything we do. The roots of chemistry stretch back to people’s early attempts to understand and manipulate the materials around them through the study and practice of alchemy. Today, we tend to be a step removed from the materials

that make up the finished products we use. Patricia Miranda of Alchemical Tech wants to put you back in touch with the way natural materials are turned into the tools we use to create art and technology. Miranda will be at World Maker Faire in New York later this month showing people how to turn materials like stones, bugs and flowers into colorful pigments. She will have lots of natural materials

on hand to show the sources of colors. Visitors can use the paint to create their own art. Come experience a bit of the science people have used through the centuries to add color to our world. — The 2014 World Maker Faire will be held at New York Hall of Science Sept. 20 and Sept. 21. For highly infectious diseases such as measles, 95 percent of a community must be vaccinated. Below that threshold, the “herd immunity” that protects the weakest is lost. Vaccines and autism are linked

Preservatives pose a hazard

Offit calls this a “cautionary tale” of what can happen when people are desperate for answers. It began with a British researcher who published a biased, flawed study in 1998. Tens of millions of dollars have been spent on research to disprove it. New autism studies point to brain abnormalities detectable in the womb — meaning the disorder is genetic.

Thymerosal is no longer used in the typical vaccines given to kids, Offit says, with the exception of some multidose flu vaccines. The mercury in thymerosal is not the same as environmental mercury — this is another case of not knowing where the real risks lay, he says: “The most dangerous aspect of getting vaccines is driving to the office to get them.”

Viruses don’t care how many fruits and vegetables you eat — your body won’t know how to defend itself unless it has come into contact with the specific virus before. The only way to build immunity is to get vaccinated or become infected. “So you’d prefer it to see that virus in a controlled, benign way with vaccination, rather than in an uncontrolled way.”

Offit likens this to “the notion that if you get a tetanus vaccine, you now feel you can run across a bed of rusty nails.” A study of more than 1,200 girls found that it doesn’t increase risky sexual behavior. What it does do is offer protection from the most common types of HPV that cause genital warts and cancers.

An allergic reaction to a vaccine is a literal one-in-a-million chance, according to the documentary. Moreover, analysis of data from the more than 35 million women who got the HPV vaccine has shown that is does not cause “mental retardation,” as Rep. Michele Bachmann claimed.

This spring’s 20-state outbreak of measles was surprising if you know that the U.S. was declared measles-free in 2000. But with about 10 percent of Americans opting out of vaccinations because of confusion about the possible risks, health officials were not shocked. How did we get here? Essentially, says Dr. Paul Offit of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, who helped invent the vaccine against rotavirus, vaccination has been too successful: “I think we’re compelled more by fear than reason, and we don’t fear these diseases because we don’t see them.” In the 1920s, his parents witnessed diptheria kill scores of teenagers. Offit grew up in the ’50s and ’60s before the development of vaccines and suffered through “all the childhood diseases,” including measles. “But my children, who are 22 and 19, not only don’t see these diseases, they didn’t grow up with these diseases,” he says. “So for them, it’s a matter of faith — and faith in who? Faith in pharmaceutical companies, the federal government, the medical establishment?” We asked Offit, who is featured in a new NOVA documentary about vaccines airing tonight at 9 on PBS, to dispel some common myths about vaccines.

Confusion compounded Re: ‘Obama needs to take charge’ (Metro, Sept. 9) Nothing against letter writer Sal Giarratani; I think the president is sending contradicting signals to the world over ISIL. But a correction is in order: Al Haig was in Richard Nixon’s Administration during Watergate, but he did not claim to be in charge then. It was in the hours following the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan, who was unconscious, when a reporter asked then Secretary of State Haig who was

simply confused “Speaker” with “Secretary.” KEVIN METZ, VIA EMAIL

Don’t just punish — help While the NFL has suspended Ray Rice for a particularly brutal act of violence against his fiancée, now wife, I wonder if suspension will help the situation. Obviously, Rice has anger management disorders that need to be addressed through long-term therapy. His wife also needs therapy because victims

of domestic violence often believe that they are the cause of the violence; they were often childhood victims of parental violence and accept it as part of love, according to Dr. Abby Stein of John Jay College. My hope is that the NFL will require and sponsor (i.e., pay for) some sort of therapy. Otherwise, they are simply compounding the cycle of domestic abuse. MELISSA BELL, VIA EMAIL

Haig thought the reporter was referring to the immediate group of administration officials presently in the White House, not the whole country. Another reporter gave Haig a chance to explain, but Haig then mistakenly said the presidential succession line after VP was Secretary of State (Haig). The correct answer was legendary Democrat Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill, who would become President in the event Reagan and VP George H.W. Bush were incapacitated. Haig said he

NFL power rankings | by Matt Burke No. 1

No. 3

Is it us or is Russell Wilson still underrated? Sure, Wilson didn’t have to face what could be the best NFL defense since the ’85 Bears like his Week 1 counterpart, Aaron Rodgers. But he did outperform the Green Bay QB. Wilson had a rating of 110.9 in Week 1, throwing a pair of touchdowns.

49ers (1-0)

Cardinals (1-0)

Panthers (1-0)

Patriots (0-1)

Rumors of their demise have been greatly exaggerated. Despite numerous absences on defense, their unit looked as good as ever, picking off Tony Romo three times. They have Chicago in Week 2.

Arizona had just six points at halftime against the Chargers on Monday, but its offense did show flashes. Carson Palmer finished the night with a rating of 108.4, throwing for 304 yards and two touchdowns.

Maybe we were wrong about this group. (We had them 19th in our preseason rankings.) The defense looked as dominant as it did last season, blanking the Bucs for the first three quarters Sunday.

Sure, the Dolphins could prove to be legit. But what about Revis Island? What about Vince Wilfork? What about that “improved” Pats defense? Shouldn’t D-coordinator Matt Patricia start taking some heat?

There is no Hard Knocks jinx. Beating New Orleans in a shootout is a tough thing to do, but Matt Ryan was up to the task, passing for 448 yards and three touchdowns.

Critics were ready to pounce on the Eagles for their poor first-half showing against the Jaguars. But their second half was dominant as they scored 34 unanswered points.

Here’s guessing the Saints’ offensive effort against Atlanta would have beat most teams in the league. But wasn’t Jairus Byrd supposed to shore up the New Orleans defense?

Cordarrelle Patterson was one of those “buzz” guys in the preseason and he more than lived up to the billing in Week 1. The nerve of this guy outrushing Adrian Peterson.

Cincy could very well have an elite, NFC-caliber defense. Lucky for them, they’re in the AFC, which means they could be in the hunt for a playoff bye. They sacked Joe Flacco three times and intercepted him.

Ryan Tannehill wasn’t great against the Patriots, finishing with a 79.9 rating. But he won’t have to be anything close to Marino-esque if the Miami defense plays like it did against New England.

It looks like it’s going to be one of those “on” years for Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers. Their second-half effort was alarming, but in the first half Big Ben looked like he was 24 years old again.

A slow clap for the Jets, here. You beat the Raiders at home. Congrats. … Oh. It’s praise you want? Fine. We’ll give Geno Smith props for looking improved. It won’t be as easy in Green Bay on Sunday.

Titans (1-0)

Our top two remains unchanged from last week and from last year. Denver allowed Indy to get back in the game Sunday, but there was a league-wide trend of second half comebacks in Week 1.

Maybe it was the national TV exposure or maybe the Giants are just plain bad this season, but damn did that Detroit offense look good Monday. Offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi knows what he’s doing.

They get a pass for what transpired last Thursday. Hell, Lombardi’s 1962 Packers weren’t going into Seattle and winning on banner night. A victory at Lambeau over the Jets this Sunday is a must, though.

Most pundits had the Bears being a playoff lock and pegged E.J. Manuel as one of the worst starters in the league. But the Buffalo defense confused Jay Cutler on Sunday and Manuel looked more than capable.

The Chiefs were team voted “most likely to regress” by an unofficial poll I just made up in my mind that surveyed zero Americans. The Titans beat them on Sunday. Good job, but we’ll need to see more.

Race to October heating up

MLB

MLB. Many playoff spots are still wide open as the baseball season enters the homestretch.

DUSTIN PEDROIA GETTY IMAGES

Pedroia may be done for 2014 Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia may be shut down for the remainder of the 2014 regular season as an MRI showed that there is “increased inflammation” in his wrist, WEEI.com reported Tuesday. Red Sox manager John Farrell didn’t say if surgery would be an option. Pedroia is batting .278 with seven home runs and 53 RBIs in 135 games this season. The Red Sox wrap up a homestand Wednesday (1:30 p.m., NESN) against Baltimore. MATT BURKE

The Red Sox are weeks removed from playoff contention, but pennant races across the majors are currently red hot. The Orioles will almost assuredly win the AL East and the LA Angels have nearly locked down the AL West. Still battling for division position are the Royals, who currently lead the AL Central. The Tigers are hot on their trail — just one game back — and the Indians are still in the mix. Wild card-wise, the A’s are leading the pack and Seattle is right there. The Yankees and Blue Jays need to rattle off a bunch of wins in a hurry if they want to keep pace as both clubs
