Airbnb users say site helps to pay the bills New York City. City officials are gunning for Airbnb, but New Yorkers who rent out their rooms say that it helps to make ends meet. Between the subway campaigns, the New York attorney general demanding a list of names and city officials claiming the site’s users are operating illegal hotels, it’s hard to be a New Yorker and not pay attention to Airbnb. The website, founded in San Francisco in 2008, connects people looking to rent out their rooms or homes to travelers. Earlier this year, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman demanded information on all New Yorkers using the site. The company handed over redacted data on 16,000 users, and was poised to hand over specific data on 124 New Yorkers. Then, an anonymous group from the 124 sued Airbnb. This week the company said they want Schneiderman and the site users to settle the matter amongst themselves. An attorney general investigation based on subpoenaed information found the “least prolific” of the 124 users had at least 10 different listings, generating $60 million over the past three years, according to the attorney general.

“I’d say the sky is the limit when it comes to the growth of the sharing economy, and any legal challenges along the way will eventually get worked out. It’s simply too strong (and popular) of a force to be denied.” Deirdre Hess, left, enjoys a glass of wine with Marit Joustra, her Airbnb guest from Holland. / BESS ADLER, METRO Sharing economy

of that being spent in the outlying boroughs. I’d say that would far surpass any sort of increased revenues from folks staying in high end hotel rooms,” said Schrage said.

these “bad actors” have been removed from the site. But, for at least two New Yorkers who rent out their spaces, the developments aren’t changing the way they do business. Over the past two years, Deirdre Hess, 31, has hosted more than 200 people in her Bushwick apartment. Hess listed her extra bedroom, with the approval of her landlord, on Airbnb after her ex-husband moved out, and a roommate left after a year

of not paying the bills. “I was freaking out and working in a grocery store,” Hess said. After listing her place, Hess said she found her first guests were a “breath of fresh air and fun to talk to.” Hess said she understands the attorney general’s need to investigate those illegally renting out their apartments, and said she hopes the law can be fixed to not get in the way of New Yorkers trying to make ends meet. NYC gets women-only cab service New York is about to get a new taxi app service — with cabs driven by women for women, according to a story in The New York Times. Serving New York City, the latest Uberlike taxi app will be available through an Apple application for smartphones as of Sept. 16, with an Android app to follow. It will be called She Taxis in the suburbs and SheRides in New York City, due to regulations barring the use of “taxi” in the name. Women who use the service will be met by a female driver wearing a hot pink scarf. Only 1 percent of New York City’s nearly 52,000 drivers of cruising yellow cabs are women, and only 5 percent of the city’s nearly 60,000 drivers of for-hire limousines and luxury sedans are female. Brooklyn. Junior’s to stay put in downtown One of downtown Brooklyn’s foodie fixtures is staying put for the time being after initial plans to shutter and move. Rumors and reports swirled in February that the longtime owners of the original Junior’s Most Fabulous Cheesecake and Desserts would put the building they’ve used since 1950 for sale. On Tuesday, owner Alan Rosen — whose family has owned the business since its opening — told The New York Times that he rebuffed offers as high as $45 million in cash for the building at the intersection of Dekalb Avenue and the Flatbush Avenue Extension. That high bid, however, wouldn’t allow Junior’s to come back to the space’s bottom floor. The original idea, Rosen told The Times, was to relocate temporarily until the famed restaurant could reopen in the same space. METRO

Days after the city revealed a spike in overdose deaths in the last three years, officials announced it would distribute 200 doses of an overdose treatment and train people how to use it. The Health Department recognized the city’s first ever Overdose Awareness Day on Tuesday by distributing the doses of naloxone and promoting training classes offered at agency locations citywide. “Naloxone is a lifesaving tool and it should be used,” Health Commis-

sioner Mary Bassett said. In May, officials announced 20,000 NYPD officers would be outfitted with kits containing the life-saving drug. Late last month, city data revealed the rate of overdoses between 2010 and 2013 jumped up 41 percent. More than half of all overdose deaths in 2013 included heroin use. Administered correctly, naloxone can reverse an overdose and help restore breathing. CHESTER JESUS SORIA

Malaysia: Dutch report suggests MH-17 was shot down from ground Malaysia Airlines. The crash occurred over pro-Russian rebel-held territory in Ukraine on July 17. Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 broke apart over Ukraine due to impact from a large number of fragments, the Dutch Safety Board said on Tuesday, in a report that Malaysia’s prime minister and several experts said suggested it was shot down from the ground. Ukraine and Western countries accuse the rebels of shooting it down with an advanced, Russian-made missile. The main rebel leader repeated earlier assertions that his forces did not possess such weapons.

The report said MH-17 crashed due to a “large number of high-energy objects penetrating the fuse-

Janay Rice, who married Ray Rice shortly after the casino incident, accused the media of using the episode to “gain ratings.” / GETTY IMAGES

Ray Rice’s wife rips the media Video. The footage of Rice knocking his then-fiancee out has also put the NFL on the defensive. Ray Rice’s wife defended the former Ravens running back on Tuesday after a video showed him knocking her out, and assailed the media for its handling of an incident that put the National Football League on the defensive. “I woke up this morning, feeling like I had a horrible nightmare, feeling like I’m mourning the death of my closest friend,” Janay Rice wrote in an Instagram post. “But to have to accept the fact that it’s reality is a nightmare itself.” Ray Rice, 27, one of the top running backs in the NFL, was released by the Ravens on Monday and suspended indefinitely by the league.

The video shows him striking Janay in the elevator of a New Jersey casino in February. “No one knows the pain that the media & unwanted options from the public has caused my family,” Janay wrote. “To make us relive a moment in our lives that we regret everyday is a horrible thing.” The NFL said it had not seen the video until Monday, when it was released by TMZ. It said it was never informed of its existence while it conducted a thorough investigation earlier this year. REUTERS

Violence at home costs $8 trillion a year, worse than war Domestic violence, mainly against women and children, kills far more people than wars and is an often overlooked scourge that costs the world economy more than $8 trillion a year, experts said on Tuesday. The study, which its authors said was a first

attempt to estimate global costs of violence, urged the United Nations to pay more attention to abuse at home that gets less attention than armed conflicts from Syria to Ukraine. “For every civil war battlefield death, roughly nine people ... are killed in inter-personal disputes,” Anke Hoeffler of Oxford University and James Fearon of Stanford University wrote in the report. At least five states have launched a joint probe into the data breach on the payment-card processing systems of Home Depot Inc., even as the retailer works to determine the impact on its customers in the United States and Canada.

The coordinated effort was disclosed on Tuesday, a day after Home Depot confirmed suspicions that its payment processing systems have been breached. A spokeswoman for Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen told Reuters that California, Connecticut and Illinois would lead the multistate effort. New York and Iowa said

they would also participate. “We have had initial contact with the company,”

said Jaclyn Falkowski, director of communications for Jepsen. “We would decline any further comment at this time.” A Home Depot spokeswoman said the company had nothing new to say beyond Monday’s statement, which said the breach could have affected any customer who had used a payment card at any of its U.S. stores since April. Apple touts Watch, Shopping. Experts say the release of the mobile wallet Apple Pay was the biggest part of the announcement. It’s official: Welcome the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus into the Apple family. Apple CEO Tim Cook unveiled the company’s latest smartphones Tuesday at an event in Cupertino, California. The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and its larger counterpart, the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, may be bigger than their previous counterparts, but Apple has managed to slim down the devices to 6.9 millimeters and 7.1 millimeters, respectively, from the 7.6-millimeter iPhone 5S. The new models will run on Apple’s latest operating system, iOS 8, increasing the speed for basic computing and processing. Coupled with the retina display, which will be 720p

The tech wearable can track biometric stats, but only works with a corresponding iPhone 5 or 6. Apple also introduced Apple Pay, the previously rumored mobile wallet payment system

that uses near-field communications (NFC). It will allow iPhone 6 users to buy goods with their Mastercard, Visa and American Express accounts by waving their devices a few inches over paired scanners. The cashier and Apple will not have access to the purchaser’s credit card info. Instead, the technology will use a unique one-time use “dynamic security

Family finances

Single moms over 40 are making it work Birth rates for unmarried women over 40 have been heading up in recent years, according to new data compiled by the National Center for Health Statistics, a division of the Centers for Disease Control. In fact, in 2012, the rate

was a full 29 percent higher than just five years earlier. The reason why that figure leaps out: In other age groups, the rate of births to unmarried women has been heading in the exact opposite direction. “The gist of the report was that nonmarital childbearing has declined recently,” says Sally Curtin, a statistician and the report’s co-author. “For all

can mean single and nevermarried, or divorced, or coupled and cohabiting but not yet hitched. So what’s behind the baby blitz among over-40 singles? The United States has slipped behind many other countries in college completion and “educational mobility,” with fewer young Americans getting more education than their parents, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s “Education at a Glance” report. U.S. college graduation rates rank 19th out of 28 countries studied by the OECD, which tracks education investment and performance of wealthier democracies, said OECD director for education and skills Andreas Schleicher. The lack of educational mobility has serious implications for individuals and society, he noted. Higher education levels are associated not just with higher earnings, but also with better health, more community engagement and more trust in governments, institutions and other people.

Quoted

“Raising educational attainment is not only giving countries more income, but it is also creating a greater degree of social cohesion.” Schleicher “Every business transaction [is founded] on trust. Trust in institutions is vital, trust in democracies. All of those aspects are vital for the functioning of societies,” Schleicher said. About half of young people in OECD countries have at least matched their parents’ level of education. But in the United States, a larger-than-average proportion had less education (so-called downward mobility) while a smaller-thanaverage population had more education (upward mobility). REUTERS

In addition to less educational mobility, the United States, along with Japan, Germany, Austria and Estonia, has “less equitable access” to higher education, meaning that it’s harder for people with lower socioeconomic status to attend college, the OECD’s Schleicher said.

That contrasts with countries such as Finland, Ireland, Australia and the Netherlands, which have both more equitable

access to education and higher educational mobility, he said. •

An argument could be made that the United States has less mobility because more of its population already had degrees than many other countries, “but you can see countries with similar attainment levels [as] the U.S. showing still a much higher degree of educational mobility,” Schleicher said.

Swift has ‘Bad Blood’ with a mysterious famous female

Royal gossip: Dirty Diana?

I suppose this counts as personal growth: Taylor Swift’s songwriting has progressed from being about ex-boyfriends to being about ex-friends. Or at least this one new song, “Bad Blood,” is. And with any Swift ditty, the real fun comes in trying to decipher the secret subject, Swiftian wordplay be damned. “For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not. She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ‘Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?’” Swift tells Rolling Stone. “[Then last year] she did something so horrible. I was like, ‘Oh, we’re just straight-up enemies.’

And it wasn’t even about a guy!” They are never ever, ever getting facials together! So what was the last straw between Swift and her mystery frenemy? “It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me,” she says. “So now I have to avoid her. It’s awkward, and I don’t like it.” On a possibly unrelated (but probably not unrelated) note, when the interview went live, Katy Perry tweeted an ominous “Mean Girls”-inspired warning: “Watch out for the Regina George in sheep’s clothing...” Yikes!

Was Princess Diana not quite as nice as we might have thought? ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES

Royal gossip is hot now, right? What with that whole new royal baby thing. So get this: There’s a chance that the People’s Princess wasn’t so lovely after all, if unauthorized tell-alls are any indication. According to a new book about Prince Harry written by Penny Junor, the spare heir’s late mother, Princess Diana, had something of a dark streak when it came to dealing with her rivals. Case in point: Diana was so consumed with jealousy toward Camilla Parker Bowles that she would call Bowles’ country home and declare, “I’ve sent someone to kill you. They’re outside in the garden. Look out of the window — can you see them?” That’s some bold sauce, Di.

Q&A NOOMI RAPACE IDENTITY CRISIS

Pushing the limits

“The Drop” is another movie in which the actress looks completely unlike herself. It’s a little surprising to see Noomi Rapace in person as a blonde. And not just a blonde — she’s even got a streak of pink running down her braid. And gold necklaces and earrings shouting words like “boom.” It’s a far cry from her star-making work in “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” or even Nadia, the guarded former drug addict she plays in “The Drop” alongside Tom Hardy. And it looks like all that blonde hair is having an effect on her. What brought that on? Oh, the pink? I’m all into pink now. [Laughs] It’s my

blonde me. I don’t know, it’s interesting. I went blonde for a movie, and it kind of affects you. When I was doing “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” after that I couldn’t wear black for like a year, and I love black. And then a couple of years ago I came back to being able to wear black, and now I’m into pink and red and stuff. Complete identity crisis. [Laughs] Are you going

to start looking for roles that are more — ? Pink? Barbies, yeah. I want to do a f—ed up Barbie character. That would be awesome. ... I like the transformation. When I read a script, I always ask myself, “What do I need to do? Who is this person and how will I become her?” I can gain weight, I can lose weight, I can shave my head, I can be blonde, I can do

piercings. I do pretty much anything. I made a decision when I was 22 that I will never make a choice out of vanity. It doesn’t matter if I’m ugly in a movie. I have let that go because I can’t work if I’m worried about how I look. And someone like Tom Hardy, he’s the same. ... Whatever is needed for the character is always more important than your own personal issues.

Is there anything a role has required that you’ve just thought was going too far? No, not yet. [Laughs] Although I did a movie called “Daisy Diamond” that was really quite far out. I played a woman who has a baby and can’t take care of it. She loses control and actually kills the baby in the middle of the film, and then becomes a prostitute. It won a ton of prizes in some countries, and other countries — like Sweden — did not like the movie. So it’s interesting to see how different cultures take it, how in Sweden they saw the movie and judged it, while in Denmark I won every prize. I like to provoke, to be like a nail in the eye ... to do things that are not always comfortable. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

Dress your home Decor. It’s time to put away the picnic baskets and break out the cozy throw pillows. We’re ready to admit it: That heat wave last week was probably the end of the hot weather for a while. Luckily, that means it’s time to start thinking about the season of comfy sweaters, pumpkin lattes and new TV. We talked to decor expert Stefanie Schiada, whose blog Brooklyn Limestone chronicles the renovation of her 100-year-old limestone home, about ways to make your home match your new autumnal mood and what design trends she thinks we’ll see this fall. Ikea hackers, unite!

“I think upcycling or repurposing items is still really big,” says Schiada. “People want to get dual-purpose items. So card catalogs or turning an Ikea hack into something bigger is always really popular and seems to be getting bigger and bigger.”

Keep it industrial

Thinking of going for some broader home renovation? Schiada says the raw look is here to say. “The industrial raw look is definitely sticking around. Exposed brick, wide plank scraped floors, that type of style. Sort of the loft-meets-personal-home look,” explains Schiada.

You were already planning on curling up under a warm blanket anyway, right? According to Schiada, that’s the right way to go. “People are adding a lot of textiles, a lot of warmth and throws and pillows. A lot of tone on tone texture. I see a lot of gray and white in black rooms, but they look great because they have all these extra sort of chunky knit textures.”

Choose colors that set the mood

Schiada says she sees olive making a comeback. Be on the lookout for “a very rich olive tone that’s not like your ’80s olive, but sort of like a gray-brown olive color.” But if you’re nervous about going olive, “Black and white is always really popular. Particularly as it gets colder, people are shying from some of the warmer colors.” CURTAINS, WEST ELM, $19-$29

One design trend Schiada sees sticking around? Animal prints. No, not the leopard kind, but rather prints with animals on them. “Every year, for the past three or four years, there’s been like an animal of the moment,” Schiada says. Her pick for this year is the jellyfish, but you may see other deep sea creatures as well.

Bring it inside

“Now that the summer’s finished, and people aren’t spending quite as much time outdoors, they’re going to bring things in like moss and outdoor sort of textures and colors ... once the weather turns cold,” says Schiada. She recommends buying aged cedar wood or adding some succulents to your decor.

The renderings of 515 Highline look very promising. This luxury condominium, which is being developed by the New York–based firm the Bauhouse Group, has been designed by Soo K. Chan of Singapore, the 52-year-old founder of SCDA Architects. The project aspires to distinguish itself from the many others along the High Line, starting with its very location, which is right at the sharp bend that the elevated promenade takes at West 29th Street. This vantage point offers a relative rarity, the developer notes: views of the High Line on two sides. Costing $125 million to build, its 12 units, described as “loft-style,” will each contain between 2,100 to 4,400 square feet and cost from $5 million to $25 million. There will be three penthouse apartments that boast substantial private outdoor space, as well as ceilings 22 feet high, and, at ground level, generous space for retail and galleries. It is scheduled to be completed in late 2015, with sales beginning this fall. The project, which will represent the architect’s U.S. debut, is a curious hybrid between the neo-Modernism and Deconstructivist styles that dominate so much of Manhattan’s contemporary architecture. While the lower half is the more traditional part of the building, it is the upper half that will define the project. Along the sides of the upper section, a layer of glass is superimposed over the surface of the windows like a sheet of the gaudily colored cellophane dear to children’s art classes the world over. But in aggressive opposition to the flawless geometry of the lower portion of the building, here the surface extends beyond the structure on either side, in irregular wavelike patterns. These

A rendering of 515 Highline shows how funky it will be — it looks like the top half is moving. / PROVIDED By the numbers

continue throughout the upper section, as though they were piercing it in so many slices, even though most are merely flanges affixed to the surface. These flanges are somewhat irregular, such that, when seen head-on, they have a moiré effect (like when somebody on TV wears a thin-striped pattern and it seems to move). When seen from the sides, however, they bring to mind the form of sound waves. It turns out that Chan is

one of those contemporary architects who explores the creative possibilities of surface as surface. There is none of the forthrightness of Modernism about this project, or the spirited aggressiveness of Deconstructivism, with its forced asymmetries, despite the way the two halves were conceived. Rather, one senses, at 515 West 29th St., an indulgence in artifice that is primarily intended to charm and seduce the viewer through delicacy. The way in which Chan has conceived his latest project has an embedded historicism to it, hearkening as it does back to the mod art of the 1960s. Put it all together, and you have something approaching Postmodernism. And yet, this term probably comes closer to defining what Chan is creating on the Far West Side than any other in common usage. Get a dose of reality. A NOVA documentary airing tonight separates fact from fiction. This spring’s 20-state outbreak of measles was surprising if you know that the U.S. was declared measles-free in 2000. But with about 10 percent of Americans opting out of vaccinations, health officials were not shocked. How did we get here? Essentially, says Dr. Paul Offit of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, who helped invent the rotavirus vaccine, vaccination has been too successful: “I think we’re compelled more by fear than reason, and we don’t fear these diseases because we don’t see them. Offit grew up in the ’50s and ’60s, suffering through “all the childhood diseases, including measles. “But my children, who are 22 and 19, not only don’t see these diseases, they didn’t grow up with these diseases, he says. “So for them, it’s a matter of faith — and faith in who? Pharmaceutical companies, the federal government, the medical establishment? We asked Offit, who is part of a new NOVA special about vaccines, to dispel some common myths. On TV

Vaccines and autism are linked

Mercury in preservatives poses a hazard

OďŹƒt calls this a “cautionary taleâ€? of what can happen when people are desperate for answers. It began with a British researcher who published a biased, awed study in 1998. Since then, tens of millions of dollars have been spent on research to disprove it. The program notes that new autism studies point to brain abnormalities detectable in the womb — meaning the disorder is genetic.

Thymerosal is no longer used in the typical vaccines given to kids, OďŹƒt says, with the exception of some multidose u vaccines. The mercury in thymerosal is not the same as environmental mercury — this is another case of not knowing where the real risks lay, he says: “The most dangerous aspect of getting vaccines is driving to the oďŹƒce to get them.â€?

For highly infectious diseases such as measles, 95 percent of a community must be vaccinated. If the rate drops below that threshold, the “herd immunity that protects those with the weakest immune systems is lost. Though measles was considered eradicated in the U.S., all it takes is an unvaccinated person being infected in a foreign country to bring it back.

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK

Femininity Donna Karan

pants, and roomy trousers all in a neutral palette of white, black, indigo and ivory. However, the accessories made the most noise. Models slung bags behind their backs the way a wise traveler or multitasking city girl might. And the slides, sneakers and platforms screamed comfort — perfect for whatever journey she’s on.

Quintessential New York designer Donna Karan is literally “painting the town with urban chic” for spring, daubing canvas-like poplin skirts and light-as-air organza dresses with Jean-Michel Basquiat-like doodles and graffiti scrawls. Street art has really energized the designer, who sent out a confident, sexy collection that strikes the right balance between working city gal and globe-trotting eccentric. Draped red jersey dresses clung in all the right places, high-waisted pants were worn with structured bra tops (which Karan dubbed “the new body suit”), and belted shirtdresses had rolled-up sleeves. Stealing the show, however, were the hilariously tall straw chapeaux by milliner Stephen Jones, which made Pharrell’s hat look like child’s play. RAQUEL LANERI

Despite the bass-heavy dissonance pounding as models walked the runway, Marcus Wainwright and David Neville’s spring collection had quiet grace. Models in lightweight fabrics (soft chambray, liquid-like leather, and relaxed cotton) looked like urban nomads trekking the city (or escaping it!) in utilitarian, chic clothes. Essential for their trip: flowy, oversized anoraks, loose dresses, some worn over

Fun on the runway Nanette Lepore’s spring presentation ended in a conga line, as the designer and her family stormed the stage and got the models clapping and dancing. The whole show had a sunny, cheerful vibe, with lots of bright yellow tent dresses, printed swimsuits, and beachy striped tops. The audience erupted when Lepore’s daughter, Violet, emerged in the closing look, a chic black embroidered caftan. RL

The look: Rock ’n’ Roll Marie Antoinette

The runway: Designer Michelle Smith served mesh see-through looks in every way possible: Dolman jackets, crop tops, pencil skirts and even hoodies all played with transparency. For the more modest, slim tuxedo trousers in electric cobalt and tailored maxi coats were also attention-grabbing.

The runway: Everything was coming up flowers for Kiwi designer Karen Walker this season, with a collection inspired by mid-century British botanical culture. That meant bold floral prints, ’60s suede jumpers and flares, and denim gardening smocks — topped off with tall straw hats and elegant scarves wrapped over the models’ heads and shoulders.

The runway: A trip to Versailles with her mom and daughter provided the spark for Stacey Bendet’s playfully opulent collection, which she showed at the sparkling Pierre Hotel in the Upper East Side. The diverse array of looks included lavishly sequined jackets worn with striped culottes; languid ’70s dresses with handkerchief hems; and colorful, painterly prints done by the designer’s friend Lola Schnabel.

The look: Retro Hollywood The runway: Sparkling hand-sewn embellishments added some cachet to classic silhouettes at Packham, whose line featured many calf-length dresses with ¾ sleeves in an overt homage to Marilyn Monroe and 1950s girly glam. Plenty of nude in sheer panels, shoes and makeup drove home the point: Packham’s collection is designed to let the girl in the gown do the talking.

The look: Unapologetically feminine The runway: For spring, Rebecca Taylor brought back her signature pretty aesthetic. “I want to wear color and feel beautiful,” she said. “I’m tired of all this restrained fashion.” The designer let her sartorial hair down in the form of gauzy chiffon dresses with handkerchief hemlines, delicate Madame Gres pleats, a motorcycle jacket done in dreamy white lace and a lavender baby doll with bold floral appliques.

Inspired. Behind the flower “As a designer you’re constantly looking for inspiration and flowers provide something so beautiful,” said Taylor who got the idea for the poppy florals in her collection during a class at Ovando. “[At the class] I was really obsessed with these amazing orange flowers,” she said. “Orange has been taking a back seat for awhile. Suddenly, it just looked fresh again.”

DIY. Alchemical Tech explains how to turn stones and bugs into pigments.

Our computers and smartphones would not operate without the materials developers used to create silicon-based integrated circuits. One way or another, chemistry underlies just about everything we do. The roots of chemistry stretch back to people’s early attempts to understand and manipulate the materials around them

through the study and practice of alchemy. Today we tend to be a step removed from the materials that make up the finished products we use. Patricia Miranda of Alchemical Tech wants to put you back in touch with the way natural materials are turned into the tools we use to create art and technology. Miranda will be at World Maker Faire in New York later this month showing people how to turn materials like stones, bugs and flowers into colorful pigments. She will have lots of natural mate-

rials on hand to show the sources of colors. Visitors can use the paint to create their own art while gaining a deeper understanding of the world around them. Come experience a bit of the science people have used through the centuries to add color to our world. — The 2014 World Maker Faire will be held at New York Hall of Science on Sept. 20 and 21. Confusion Don’t just compounded punish Re: ‘Obama needs to take charge’ (Metro, Sept. 9) A correction is in order: Al Haig was in Richard Nixon’s Administration during Watergate, but he did not claim to be in charge then. It was in the hours following the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan, who was unconscious, when a reporter asked then-Secretary of State Haig who was in charge, and he replied that he was. Haig took a lot of heat for the remark, but his explanation is plausible. Haig thought the reporter was referring to the immediate group of administration officials presently in the White House, not the whole country.

I wonder if the NFL suspension will help the situation. Obviously, Ray Rice has anger management disorders that need to be addressed through longterm therapy. His wife also needs therapy because victims of domestic violence often believe that they are the cause of the violence, according to Dr. Abby Stein of John Jay College. My hope is that the NFL will require and sponsor (i.e., pay for) some sort of therapy. Otherwise, they are simply compounding the cycle of domestic abuse. MELISSA BELL, VIA EMAIL

ing 164 yards on seven receptions, including two scores in the opening quarter. “I was disappointed in a lot of things … [especially] that long play,” Coughlin said, referring to Johnson’s 67-yard touchdown

reception on the game’s fourth play. “We obviously had no idea where the receiver was and knocked our own cover guy down. Made it look pretty easy and we had a chance with a possibility of tackling and sacking the quarter-

back and he avoided that to make that play.” Staying on the field was difficult for the Giants, while getting off the field was equally impossible. And as the game waned on — and victory was getting further out of reach — it was evident that the fight in the Giants’ defense was waning as well. “I think we need to have more fun, but it is only fun when you are making plays [because] once you make a play, you get on a roll,” linebacker Jon Beason said. “But when you make mistakes and you don’t get off the field on third down, it is demoralizing. Maybe that is what [safety Antrel Rolle] meant by a lack of fight.” TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us

It was not because he was trying to avoid the media but because he was itching to get back on the field. “I got so much respect for this game,” Prado said. “It’s not about me. It’s about having an opportunity to play every day and to get where I am right now.” Prado was the last of

seven trade acquisitions by general manager Brian Cashman. It was a move that came in the last minutes of the non-waiver trade deadline and even though the Yankees entered Tuesday five games out in the wild-card race, they might be further back without Prado. “Hitters like that, the biggest compliment you can give is that they’re just a pain in the ass,” Brandon McCarthy said. “Go back to [Derek] Jeter’s prime, that’s exactly [what Prado is doing].” LARRY FLEISHER
