Thousands gathered along the 9/11 Memorial Plaza on Thursday morning for the commemoration ceremony. The proceedings began with a presentation of the American flag and bagpipe playing. At 8:46 a.m., the gatherers observed a citywide moment of silence to remember the first plane striking the World Trade Center’s North Tower, then the reading of the names began. Many of the 138 readers said their loved ones will always be in their hearts, thanked first responders and reminded those who gathered to never forget what happened in 2001. One young

Although this is the first year the 9/11 Memorial Museum in Lower Manhattan was open, the events to remember those who died, were largely routine. “I think one of the reasons why we create monuments of memorial is that we can forget, because the memory is consigned to the memorial,” said Deirdre Boyle, associate professor at the School of Media Studies at New School. For the first few years after 9/11, people wanted to talk about the event. At some point, Boyle said, “suddenly nobody wanted to talk about it” because of the pain. Boyle said the “last real focus” on remembering 9/11 was on the 10th anniversary in 2011. Boyle said 9/11 has a different meaning for New Yorkers who lived through it than other Americans. The experience is also different for people who experienced the events as children or who hadn’t been born yet, Boyle said. “Frankly, I think for the younger generation, anything that happened before they were born is like the Peloponnesian War … unless they had some personal connection … [it] might as well be Pearl Harbor.” WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE

For the first time in 20 years, the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights will not march in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. His decision to withdraw about 200 league members had nothing to do “with gays,” Donohue wrote, but rather with the parade committee’s alleged betrayal. Metro was unable to reach parade spokesman William O’Reilly, who told the Wall Street Journal via email that a pro-life organization was also welcome to apply to the parade, but that none applied before they cut off requests. There are about 40 types of human papillomavirus (HPV) that may affect an estimated 75% to 80% of males and females in their lifetime. For most, HPV will clear on its own. However, there’s no way to predict who will and won’t clear the virus. For those who don’t clear certain types, HPV could cause cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers in females and anal cancer and genital warts in both males and females. The CDC recommends routine vaccination for boys and girls ages 11 or 12 against HPV-related cancer and diseases. GARDASIL® [Human Papillomavirus Quadrivalent (Types 6, 11, 16, and 18) Vaccine, Recombinant] is the only HPV vaccine that helps protect against 4 types of HPV. In girls and young women ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against 2 types of HPV that cause about 75% of cervical cancer cases, 70% of vaginal cancer cases, and up to 50% of vulvar cancer cases. In males and females ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against about 80% of anal cancer cases and about 90% of genital warts cases.
THE CDC RECOMMENDS ROUTINE VACCINATION OF 11 OR 12 YEAR OLDS AGAINST HPV-RELATED CANCER AND DISEASES. THE TIME TO PROTECT THEM IS BEFORE EXPOSURE TO THE VIRUS.
GARDASIL may not fully protect everyone, nor will it protect against diseases caused by other HPV types or against diseases not caused by HPV. GARDASIL does not prevent all types of cervical cancer, so it’s important for women to continue routine cervical cancer screenings. GARDASIL does not treat cancer or genital warts. GARDASIL is given as 3 injections over 6 months.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION Anyone who is allergic to the ingredients of GARDASIL, including those severely allergic to yeast, should not receive the vaccine. GARDASIL is not for women who are pregnant. The side effects include pain, swelling, itching, bruising, and redness at the injection site, headache, fever, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and fainting. Fainting can happen after getting GARDASIL. Sometimes people who faint can fall and hurt themselves. For this reason, your child’s health care professional may ask your child to sit or lie down for 15 minutes after he or she gets GARDASIL. Some people who faint might shake or become stiff. This may require evaluation or treatment by your child’s health care professional. Only a doctor or health care professional can decide if GARDASIL is right for your son or daughter. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

Manhattan’s rent gains send Queens’ surging NYC. Renters are turning toward Queens. Apartment leasing in New York’s Brooklyn and Queens boroughs surged in August as newly built units offered options to tenants seeking relief from Manhattan rents close to records. New lease signings increased 72 percent from a year earlier in Brooklyn and more than quadrupled in Queens, while rents fell, appraiser Miller Samuel Inc. and brokerage Douglas Elliman Real Estate said Thursday in a report. In Manhattan, where the median monthly rent climbed 0.8 percent to $3,175, new deals declined 5.9 percent. “You have a whole new form of housing stock,” said Jonathan Miller, president of Miller Samuel. “Most new development in Brooklyn is rental and they’re coming on line. On the Queens side, basically a third of the market is new development.”

Court upholds state ‘gay conversion therapy’ ban A federal appeals court on Thursday upheld New Jersey’s ban on counseling intended to change the sexual orientation of gay and lesbian children. By a 3-0 vote, a panel of the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the ban, which Republican Governor Chris Christie signed into law in August 2013, did not violate the free speech or religious rights of counselors offering “gay conversion therapy” to convert homosexual minors into heterosexuals. In a letter to the city, Ballard’s mother Beverly Ann Griffin expressed her own emotional distress. “When you took my son away from me, part of me died too,” she wrote. His last arrest was in June 2013 in Houston but was extradited to New York for violating parole. Once back, he was sent to Rikers and put in isolation. The lawsuit argues he went seven days without proper medication and was found weakened, covered in feces and vomit with infected genitals after he mutilated himself. Ballard died soon after. METRO

Lawmakers behind President in fight to defeat Islamic State Vote uncertain. Legislators encouraged but wary of details. Lawmakers pledged support on Thursday for President Barack Obama’s plan to expand the military fight against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria, but fears of an open-ended conflict and questions about how to pay for it could complicate any vote on the effort. Obama sent a panel of top administration officials to the Capitol to make the case to Congress for broadening operations against the group, including U.S. air strikes in Syria for the first time and more military advisers in Iraq. In a televised address on Wednesday night, the Democratic president declared he would lead an alliance to root out Islamic State, plunging the United States into two conflicts in which nearly every country in the Middle East has a stake. Walking along the D.C. waterfront this week, I saw a 20-something slouching in baggy jeans, beat-up Vans and a yellow T-shirt that proclaimed: “I’m bringing the AWESOME!” Yeah, I’ll bet. I haven’t seen that much awesome since Walter White assembled his crew in the alleys of Albuquerque. But then I thought, “Why should I fault him? Everyone else in this town seems to think the same thing.” From the president to the pundits, from the senators to the endless Congress members (honestly, around here it’s easier to find a lawmaker than a gas station), D.C. is crawling with people who are convinced they are “bringing the awesome” every day. When opinions are wanted, they have one for any subject. When circumspection is required, they are as coy as cats under the bed. And when

And yet the president’s approval rating has been in the basement so long that it’s getting moldy, and our latest CNN/ORC poll found a whopping 65 percent of voters think this is the worst Congress ever! How can this be with all that SO MUCH awesomeness running around? I think the awesomeness is to blame. When you put that many people who are convinced of their OWN greatness into one place, it gets awfully hard for any of them to concede that anyone else might have a good idea about terror-

And given time, they almost all start believing their press releases, hoisting glasses of single malt, and whispering to the capital night, “I’m special. I’m awesome. I really am!” But here is the thing: In my experience, the smartest, most confident, most capable people are also the quickest to admit when they are wrong, to consider the ideas of others and to admit what they don’t know. That — not false confidence — is what makes them true leaders. And yeah, it’s awesome.

Pistorius cleared of murder, other charges pending Olympian on trial. Oscar Pistorius was found not guilty of premeditated murder, but could still face 15 years.

NEWS
Oscar Pistorius was cleared on Thursday of murdering girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, but the Olympic and Paralympic track star faced a troubled night after the South African judge adjourned for the day before ruling on a charge of culpable homicide. The double-amputee, once one of the biggest names in world athletics, has reason to fear a guilty verdict after Judge Thokozile Masipa adjourned

Pistorius could still be convicted of culpable homicide, which is like manslaughter. It carries a sentence of up to 15 years in prison.
seconds after saying key elements of the culpable homicide charge were satisfied when he shot Steenkamp dead on Valentine’s Day last year. “I am of the view that the accused acted too hastily and used excessive force. It is clear that his conduct was negligent, she told the packed courtroom before adjourning until Friday. She also said he had not acted “reasonably. Earlier, Masipa ruled that prosecutors, led by the combative Gerrie Nel, failed to prove the 27-yearold intended to kill Steenkamp after an argument. The defense said Pistorius shot Steenkamp as a result of a tragic accident after mistaking her for an intruder hiding behind a locked toilet door. REUTERS

Myths that stop women from getting MBAs Don’t let these misconceptions stop you from getting the degree you want.
For generations, business schools have been seen as male-dominated environments filled with aggressive overachievers. While the focus on achievement is probably true, a new generation of advocates say that more women should seriously consider pursuing MBAs in order to achieve their career goals. Elissa Sangster, the executive director of the Forte Foundation, shares these misconceptions she says many women have about pursuing an MBA. LAKSHMI GANDHI @LakshmiGandhi lakshmi.gandhi@metro.us
There aren’t any scholarships
You think you might not fit in
Some students might not think of scholarships and grants when planning how to pay for their business degrees, but there are several scholarships and other sources of funding available. Some of these scholarships are earmarked for women or people of color interested in pursuing business school. Prospective students should research their options and use networking opportunities to investigate leads.
It’s crucial to take the time to find the program that is the right fit for you. Not all MBA programs are the same, and it’s important to see if the current students in the programs you are interested in are taking classes and getting internships (and jobs) at the companies you’re interested in working for. Doing this legwork is especially important if you want to go into a specialized field.
Being part of a strong network is one of the biggest advantages to getting an MBA. / PHOTODISC
You have to know exactly what you want to do Sangster says many prospective students may think getting an MBA means you automatically have to go into the stock market or into a corporate job. “But an MBA can help you get where you want to go, whether that is in nonprofits, media and entertainment, or whether you are an entrepreneur or want to go into consulting,” says Sangster.
You won’t have any support
School is simply way too expensive
One advantage of getting an MBA or any other graduate degree is that as soon as you graduate you will be a member of your school’s alumni network. “The attention paid to the alumni network and having them as coaches and mentors [can be a key to success],” says Sangster. She advises students to begin attending events featuring alumni while still a student in order to make those connections.
“Women are very riskaverse,” says Sangster, noting that many women balk at the hefty price tag attached to most MBA programs. She wants to remind students that organizations such as the Forte Foundation provide financial assistance for students as they navigate the financial aid process and decide on the best program for both their academic needs and their wallets.

Must-see
‘Gotham’ FOX, premieres 8 p.m., Sept. 22 What exactly did the city of Gotham do before Bruce Wayne put on a mask and started batting around? This show suggests that Batman’s bud Commissioner Gordon was in charge of saving the day back then. Here, he’s just a detective trying to outwit the likes of future Joker, future Riddler and future Penguin. Basically, it’s the “before they were stars” of Batman villains.

Return of the rom-com
In a perfect world, all these little flowers would survive and thrive and air six seasons and a movie; alas, some of them are going to get the boot. Here are our picks for which new shows you might not be seeing for too long.
Remember “Mad About You”? Apparently, so do TV execs, because there are some romantic sitcoms hitting the small screen this year. The genre may be a bit DOA in the movie world, but TV hasn’t given up on it.
A few beloved shows will be finishing out a final season. The best time to think about this is in September, when you’ve still got a full season of TV left and no on-again/ off-again couples have been shoehorned back together to make for a happy ending.

1
‘Selfie,’ ABC, premieres 8 p.m., Sept. 30 Someday, someone will find a show worthy of John Cho. This is not that show. Of course, given the terrible things “Sleepy Hollow” put him through, we can’t blame him for seeking something new.
2
‘Marry Me,’ NBC, premieres 9 p.m., Oct. 14 Fans of the underwatched “Happy Endings” should watch this, since it again pairs series creator David Caspe with cast member Casey Wilson. Also on hand: Ken Marino, who you may recognize from “Party Down” and “Children’s Hospital.”
Swan songs
‘Parenthood,’ NBC, returns 10 p.m., Sept. 25 NBC’s weekly cry-o-rama has been on the verge of cancellation the whole time it’s aired. This time, it really is the end. Series creator Jason Katims has said a broader story unites the Braverman clan this season.
“BAD JUDGE”
“SCORPION”
Women behaving oddly
Superheroes and supergeniuses
This premiere season features a few shows whose main premise seems to be that the female leads are behaving in some way outside the norm for women.
There are many ways to save the day on TV and, as usual, there are a few different types of people trying to do it this season.
1
‘Bad Judge,’ NBC, premieres 9 p.m., Oct. 2 She’s a judge, but she also drinks! Kate Walsh stars in this comedy about a woman who somehow manages to have a serious adult job while still having a fun private life.
1
‘The Flash,’ CW, premieres 8 p.m., Oct. 7 He’s really fast, and he can save the day! This one’s a spinoff of the ever-popular “Arrow.” Since that one has quickly grown into one of the hotter CW shows, we have high hopes for its new buddy, which might build up a fan base even faster. See what we did there?
1 2 3 45
‘Mulaney,’ FOX, premieres 9:30 p.m., Oct. 5 Former “SNL” writer John Mulaney takes his talents to the sitcom world, bringing fellow “SNL” alum Nasim Pedrad with him. Martin Short and Elliot Gould join them, but that didn’t stop NBC from passing on the show. Fox is hoping to overcome tepid word of mouth.
2
2
‘A to Z,’ NBC, premieres 9:30 p.m., Oct. 2 Cristin Milioti (the mother of “How I Met Your Mother”) finds herself in another “narrated from the future” show. This time, Katey Sagal tells viewers how long she’ll date Ben Feldman’s Andrew. We just hope her character survives this one.
2
‘Parks and Recreation,’ NBC, return TBD Ready to see what the future holds? “Parks” jumped three years forward in time. The premiere date is TBD, but we included it here because Amy Poehler’s Leslie Knope has admitted she already has a eulogy written for her coworker called “Ron Swanson, a swan song.”
2
‘How to Get Away with Murder,’ ABC, premieres 10 p.m., Sept. 25 She’s a law professor, but she has unorthodox methods and might be a murderer: The latest from certified TV genius Shonda Rimes, this show revolves around a genius law school instructor played by Oscar-winner Viola Davis. Has Davis gotten away with murder, or have the students? It’s unclear just yet, but someone will probably be trying to do it.
2
‘Scorpion,’ CBS, premieres 9 p.m., Sept. 22 The heroes of this show are a little more real world-based. They’re a group of slightly erratic geniuses who don’t do so well in the social skills department, but are good at working together to take down threats to the homeland.
These returning shows all sport a central couple who spend a lot of time traveling back and forth along the spectrum of possibly getting together. That may not be the only reason you watch, but we suspect it’s something you’ve been thinking about since the shows had their finales. ‘Sleepy Hollow,’ FOX, returns 9 p.m., Sept. 22
1
We don’t really want to say this is a will they/ won’t they, since we feel Abbie and Ichabod are platonic soulmates, but we know lots of fans are hoping these two apocalypse-fightin’ kids get together. But Ichabod’s wife just got released from purgatory, so this may not be their season. ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine,’ FOX, returns 8:30 p.m., Sept. 28
2
This comedy raised the question of its central couple getting together last season: Andy Samberg’s Jake Peralta asked out Melissa Fumero’s Amy Santiago just before going on a six-month undercover mission. They might be less “will they/ won’t they” and more “are they/ aren’t they” when the show returns.

A couple of rounds with Dash Mihok Interview. The “Ray Donovan” star hunkers down with Metro for a few beers and some serious talk.
DASH MIHOK FILMMAGIC
Dash Mihok is being very good about not giving away details about the last few episodes of the current season of “Ray Donovan” — even after he’s had a few beers. “You know my show, they can whack me at any time, so I kind of can’t talk too much. They won’t hesitate to whack somebody, even if you’re a family member,” he says. He does admit that Liev Schrieber,
who plays the titular Ray, is pretty safe from vindictive whacking; it would be weird if they killed off Ray Donovan on “Ray Donovan.” Or maybe not. “They could just start calling it ‘The Donovans’ or something,” Mihok offers. “No, he’s safe.” On the series, currently wrapping up its second season and recently renewed for a third, Mihok has had plenty of time to explore the tortured soul of Bunchy Donovan, a luxury he attributes to the nature of television. “In general, you see all these movie actors moving to TV because it’s racier, it’s more interesting and they’re enjoying getting to portray these people that are really, really complicated and layered and flawed for more than two hours,” he says. He’s not talking about

the film and television worlds. And he’s still got a few items on his wish list. “You know what I want to do? I want to shoot a movie in Europe. I’ve never done that. You’d think that would’ve happened by now,” he says. “I mean, I’d love to be the lead and

Mihok is so enamored with television that he’s getting behind the camera. “I just directed a pilot and screened it at my agency last week. We’re going to sell it,” he says. “It’s a really dark comedy, and it could go to places like Amazon or Netflix. It’s got pretty racy

Lit Crawl Manhattan doesn’t stop at bars. Well, technically it does — but it also stops at bookstores, boutiques and even laundromats. / ASLAN CHALOM
Like a bar crawl, but with books Lit Crawl. This weekend’s event brings literature into the streets — and bars — of Manhattan. Dylan Thomas’ portrait still commands his seat at the White Horse Tavern in Greenwich Village, where he notoriously downed 18 fatal shots of whiskey. Although most bonds between books and booze in New York are less obvious, the city’s taps still provide inspiration and escape for literary legends (and those working to be). Both categories receive special tribute during Lit Crawl Manhattan, a brainchild of San Francisco’s Litquake Foundation, which works to foster community through a shared love of literature. The event arrived in New York with one of its original creators, Suzanne
Russo, who moved here from San Francisco in 2006. “Although New York obviously had a fabulous literary scene, I did not feel that it had anything quite like what Litquake offered,” she says. “It still surprises me that people love it as they do.” Lit Crawl takes the high energy and pace of a classic bar crawl and injects a literary spirit. Pubs factor prominently as venues, but the crawl often goes far beyond, filling up cafes, bookstores, galleries, clothing boutiques, barbershops, parks and police stations with readings, games, workshops, artwork, masquerades and even burlesque. “The beauty of Lit Crawl is that while it’s always the same format, each year is always so different from the previous,” Russo says. Now in its seventh year, LitCrawl Manhattan dives this Saturday into the East Village and Lower East Side, covering 22 venues with an almost equal num-

Both neighborhoods are known for their longstanding dedication to the arts, and residents appreciate any efforts to keep it that way. It doesn’t hurt that some of the city’s best bars are there, too. Intoxication during Lit Crawl may indeed come from the libations, but Russo hopes it also comes through words. “If people are inspired to read a book based on an experience at Lit Crawl, I feel my job is done,” she says. Why won’t you leave nice Taraji P. Henson alone? Yeah, right? I watched it yesterday with an audience and I kept asking myself, “Why are you there? I was watching it thinking, “Wow, I must be an actor because if I am really like that in real life, man, I wouldn’t have any friends.” This has almost a nice throwback feel to it. Yeah, it’s a genre film. It’s quite reminiscent of old thrillers. I was a co-producer on this, and the director and I talked about that: “Let’s remind audiences that they’re in a thriller.” You’re going to hear thunder and you’re going to hear mood music and

stuff. For some reason we stopped making those types of films, but they work. They serve a particular purpose, and they work. What kind of projects are interesting you now? I’m into being very varied, sort of shaking up genres. This film, for example — one could argue in America that this is penned as an African-American film, but it really isn’t. It isn’t a specific market film, it’s just a film. And it’s relatable to anyone who likes thrillers. My personal taste is to try to turn these genres on their heads and break down these lines that we have that segment film one way or another. And also personally, I’m into really big, full characters at the moment. That’s what I want to develop: iconic characters like Mandela, like Luther.

Review
Tom Hardy is a weird, quiet guy in Dennis Lehane’s ‘The Drop’ •••••
The rare film written by the oft-adapted Dennis Lehane (“Mystic River”) finds a lonely working-class Brooklyn bartender (Tom Hardy) at the center of a headache involving a robbery, Chechen mobsters and a loose-cannon thug (Matthias Schoenaerts). There’s also a cute dog.
The lowdown: The films made from Lehane’s novels are usually grandiose and plot-heavy, but Lehane’s first script feels like a short story — a character study in no particular hurry to get to its hair-raising conclusion. Even more than the sometimes too studied “Mystic River,” it digs deep into its dirty locale, soaking up the feel of a location that feels unstuck in time, where the most modern thing is that the mobster overlords are from Chechnya. “The Drop” can be a bit too digressive at times; there’s perhaps too much of the

adorable pit bull that Hardy’s lug rescues from a trash can. But its shagginess is part of the master plan, which also
includes casting Hardy, who’s quiet and shy yet vaguely eccentric. Like the film, he seems like he’s in a stupor, yet
occasionally reveals bursts of left-field confidence. When he and the film snap into focus, watch out. MATT PRIGGE
Relationship saga. Chastain takes off in ‘The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby’
Not Bond, not James Bond
Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy have marital problems in “Eleanor Rigby.” / THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY
Does the talk about how you should be the next James Bond still come up a lot? Oh yeah, everyone keeps asking me about it. It’s died down a bit; maybe it’s starting to pass. But it’s still just a rumor, unfortunately. But you’re going to do more “Luther,” right? Yeah, man, I’m definitely trying to do that. That’s something that’s happened over the last few days, where I’ve been with Neil [Cross, the show’s creator] and we’ve discussed it in depth. We’re going to move forward and try to pull off this two-hour special for TV. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu
There are three full-length movies in this saga about a couple (Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy) who split after the death of their child: “Her,” which shows only her side; “Him,” which follows him; and this, which melds them together. (“Her” and “Him” will be released next month.) The lowdown: “Them” was constructed after “Her” and “Him” had already played at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, and the only reason it needs to exist is to put more butts in the seats. (This was before “Boyhood” showed that long experimental narratives could make serious dough.) It does ruin some of what makes “Her” and “Him” special, particularly the exploration of subjectivity: Not only are the few scenes Chastain and McAvoy share written and staged differently, but the films themselves offer tight, downright claustrophobic looks at how two characters handle grief and their breakup very differently. Though we recommend seeing “Her” and “Him” together in one three-hour piledrive, that’s
Review ‘The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them’ Director: Ned Benson Stars: Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy Rating: R
••••• not to say “Them” doesn’t work at all. Chastain is predictably mesmerizing as a woman who shuts down in the wake of tragedy, then tries to reinvent herself without having any clear idea of who that person should be. McAvoy’s great too, from a perspective that’s very male: He can’t understand why his wife has vanished and spirals into a grouchy exasperation that can be amusingly childish. “Them” is good, but it’s a curio — the experiment you see out of vague interest after you’ve seen the more successful experiment that is “Her” and “Him.” MATT PRIGGE

Men are to blame for domestic violence This week, Ray Rice was cut from his team just hours after TMZ published a video of the Baltimore Raven assaulting his wife, Janay Palmer, in an elevator. Not only was she hurt physically (Rice punched her in the face), she was humiliated. She was humiliated by her husband, humiliated by the NFL and especially the Ravens, going so far as to call the incident a “distraction” for Rice (and let’s remember that this assault happened back in February). She was also shunned and humiliated by the legal system, which also wouldn’t assist, with Rice’s lawyer turning the blame on her for the assault (claiming the professional
football player was “defending himself”). The scary part: Janay Palmer is not alone. Women are hurt, threatened, coerced and abused every single day. But I don’t want to focus on the women’s side of this issue, because these behaviors are not the women’s problem. Yes, these issues impact women (in profoundly ugly ways), but they reflect the deeprooted issues of (some) men. THESE BEHAVIORS ARE A REFLECTION OF PROBLEMS WITH MEN. Stop calling these problems “women’s issues.” By saying that, we are adding insult

Everyday glamour Ralph Lauren It’s a jungle out there. To help his girl trek the city streets, or, perhaps, an actual savanna in Kenya, Ralph Lauren sent models out the gates in safari dress: Fitted cargo pants in silk, cotton or satin; authoritative jodhpurs; and army shirts with epaulets all in earthy tones of olive, ivory and black. But his is a lady — and a glamorous one at that. Lauren balanced out the utilitarian looks with a hefty dose of razzle-dazzle. Big, sparkly jewelry, polished peplums, bouncy skirts and punches of vibrant color— seductive amethyst, canary yellow, mandarin orange — all found their way down the runway. The evening gowns, a house specialty, ranged from sleek and fluid to frothy (cargo shirts tucked into fluffy tulle skirts). But it was the one-off — a slithering silk white column with corset lacing — that stood out from the herd.
Visit Metro.us for continued exclusive coverage of NYFW. well. The designer described the mood as “optimistic chic,” and the sunny collection checked off all the requisites of a preppy summer wardrobe: chic capri trouser, light-as-air gingham sundresses, luxe knit pullovers. Sui crams so many references into one look that it’s a wonder her collections cohere at all, but cohere, beguile and most especially delight they do. One of everything, please!

What does US gain from fighting ISIS? Re: ‘Obama unveils his strategy to eliminate ISIL’ (Metro, Sept. 11) In his Wednesday address, President Obama appears to be avoiding the mistakes and pitfalls of his immediate predecessor, although his proposed strategy is unlikely to please or even quiet his many critics (especially given nothing short of his impeachment would actually accomplish that). Unfortunately for the rest of us, he appears poised to repeat the same mistakes made by Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon with Vietnam: excessive — and ultimately counterproductive — use of air power, dependence upon unreliable regional partners,
early promises of no troops being deployed and no clear benchmarks for measuring success. The administration’s chief counterterrorism adviser has already stated that ISIS poses no imminent nor credible danger to America’s security, so what justifies such a broad and hazardous commitment beyond the bloodlust of a handful of pundits? After the last 13 years of sacrificing our troops, treasure and freedoms in the name of “homeland security,” people deserve a straight answer on this one question, but one I suspect we will never receive. Stories to watch as Jets face the Packers
1
NFL. The Jets step up in competition Week 2 as they play Green Bay on the road in a national TV game. The Jets took care of business against the Raiders in their Week 1 win. Now, they hit the road for a much steeper task: stopping Pro Bowl quarterback Aaron Rodgers. It was far from a perfect opener by the Jets, with 11 penalties and two turnovers by the offense, but positives did emerge. “I’m really impressed with the Jets defense. I think that the depth, the size of what they have up front, and schematically what they challenge you with” Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said. “It’s an excellent defense. It’s just something we’re obviously going to spend a lot of time on.” Metro takes a look at three storylines to watch for as the Jets travel to Green Bay on Sunday to face off at historic Lambeau Field (4:25 p.m., CBS). Giants vs. Cardinals: Three things to watch
The Jets aren’t the only team with injury concerns as Green Bay’s offensive line has been hit hard. Rodgers was sacked three times last week against the Seahawks and pressured into numerous passes to his safety outlets. If given time, he is the best quarterback in the league, but that patchwork offensive line will have to protect him. “I think we protected

pretty well. This was a weekend off for most guys. The coaches had some time to prepare, but this is a normal week for us,” Rodgers said. Packers right tackle Bryan Bulaga, the team’s first-round pick in 2010, suffered a sprained MCL in Week 1, but he was back on the practice field in a limited capacity Thursday and looks like he could be ready Sunday. He’s wearing a knee brace, and may not be quite as mobile, but that’s a lot better than losing him for the season as they feared initially.

Hungry Pack After a humiliating Week 1 loss at the Seahawks in the first game of the NFL season, the Packers will be looking to make amends. The Packers will be back home in the friendly confines of Lambeau Field where they won’t have to worry about a hostile atmosphere like they faced in Seattle. And while the Jets defense is good, it isn’t in the same ballpark as a Seattle unit that is already being talked about am among the best of all-time. all-time “Well, really it feels like we ha haven’t played in two we weeks because we’re coming com off of a Thursday night game,” McCarthy said. “So we’ve had ha plenty of time to ccorrect our last gam game, and go through that Friday throug and sspend extra time Monday tim on it.” o Look for Green Bay to G ccome out early and execute well an they look to set as the the tone, especially on its home field.
