House of horrors will likely take until Tuesday to clean Blackstone. Cleanup of the home where three infant bodies were found has been ongoing for days. Cleanup crews toiled away in knee-deep debris and refuse throughout the weekend at a home officials are calling a house of horrors, and they could be cleaning up the squalor until this Tuesday. A Blackstone woman is being held without bail in connection to the St. Paul Street home, where the remains of three infants were found last week. Erika Murray, 31, was charged with an array of crimes in connection with those deaths
and child endangerment in Uxbridge District Court last week. Last month, the state took into custody four children who lived at the home and whose ages ranged from 5 months to 13 years. The Milford Daily News described the home as a dirty, vermin-infested abode that contained stacks of soiled diapers. Piles of rubbish were said to be everywhere and the children who lived there existed in an ever-present filth. Town Administrator Daniel Keyes said Blackstone, a small town of 9,000 located 35 miles southwest of Boston on the Rhode Island border, said he was shocked at the home’s conditions. He said there was feces on the walls of the home. “You always say ‘My God that doesn’t happen in our town.’ Well it did,” said Keyes.

Blackstone Board of Health Chairman William Walsh told The Globe, “It’s the worst I’ve ever seen in my career working for the Board of Health and Inspectional Services.” The Globe reported that Murray’s attorney, Keith Halpern, thinks his client suffers from mental illness. Police first stumbled upon the property when a neighbor complained of a crying child in late August. They did not uncover the remains of the infants until this past week, when authorities returned to search the property more thoroughly. Murray is being held at the women’s prison in Framingham. Smoking of any kind is illegal in all of Boston’s 250 parks, squares, cemeteries and beaches, but police at the Freedom Rally on Sunday seemed to look the other way. / NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO
Spirits were high over the weekend on Boston Common, where thousands attended the 25th Annual Boston Freedom Rally, which calls for the legalization of marijuana. In December, the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission voted to ban the smoking of tobacco, marijuana and vaporized substances in its more than 250 parks, squares, cemeteries and beaches — including the Common. But on Sunday, it seemed the ban had little to no effect on the smoke-friendly event, despite the threat of a $250 smoking fine. Patrol officers meandered peacefully through crowds that emitted that unmistakable fragrance, and rallygoers made no at-
tempt to hide their blazing ways. “I heard about [the smoking ban], and it’s not going to stop me. I think that’s outrageous,” said Andrew, 24, who declined to give his last name as he puffed on a thick blunt. “The country was founded on the tobacco plant, and the fact that they’re slowly trying to outlaw it — I think it’s ridiculous. It’s crazy.” Longtime rallygoer Chris, 24, said he is drawn to the event because, “Where else can you smoke pot in front of cops?” His friend Stepfani, 24, said officers were keeping their distance from attendees. “It’s been pretty laid-back from what I’ve seen. They’re just walking around,” she said.
Visit Metro.us to view a photo gallery of Sunday’s Freedom Rally on the Common. A Boston Police spokeswoman said she had no information on any citations being handed out at the rally, and a patrol officer at the scene said officers were giving out verbal warnings to smokers “unless they blow smoke right in my face.” MORGAN ROUSSEAU

A man arrested for allegedly rigging a hidden camera inside the women’s restroom of an Arlington cafe is expected to be arraigned today. On Saturday, police arrested Joseph B. Hennessy, 53, of Salem, New Hampshire, and charged him with disturbing the peace and photographing an unsuspecting nude person. Police say Hennessy set up a camera inside the bathroom of the Kickstand Cafe, located at 594 Mass Ave., around 8 a.m. Saturday. Police believe Hennessy was streaming video from the camera to a device “he was using inside the common area of the restaurant.” Police seized the device that was allegedly used in the illicit surveillance and plan to talk to New Hampshire authorities about Hennessy. Kanye stops a show because of two people

Kanye West is getting all sorts of heat for halting a performance in Sydney when his demands that every single person in the arena get on their feet wasn’t met due to two uncooperative fans. “I can’t do this show until everybody stand up,” West told the crowd. “Unless you got a handicap pass and you get special parking and s—.” Yeah, about that: West apparently spotted two audience members who were still seated, and when he singled them out,
one waved her prosthetic limb at him, prompting an appropriate response from West of, “OK, you fine.” He then turned his attention to the second one despite others trying to signal that the fan was actually wheelchair-bound and not just recalcitrant. According to the Daily Mail Australia, West would not continue with the show until he had staff confirm the non-standing offender was indeed in a wheelchair. He’s nothing if not thorough.

[Film] was just a natural progression of what I’ve always done.”
The last three films Connick Jr. has been in have been family-oriented, including the first “Dolphin Tale.” He can do darker. His acting breakthrough was 1995’s “Copycat,” in which he played a giddy serial killer. “It’s not family films, per se, that I’m drawn to. Whether I’m doing ‘Dolphin Tale’ or ‘Copycat,’ the thing that draws me is they’re good stories,” he says. “If the next 10 scripts I read were great family films, I’d do ’em. If they were all dark, twisted stuff like ‘Bug,’ I’d do them too.” And he really doesn’t have an agenda. “Things happen organically. Projects are born out of a chance meeting or a whim of an idea. That will never stop. I never sit down and plan things. Things kind of happen,” he says. As for his role in “Copycat,” when asked why director Jon Amiel thought of the singer to play a deranged psychopath, he says he never got an answer. “That made me wonder what led him to believe I could do that,” he recalls. “That’s a question I’d like answered at some point.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Chances: Bennett just filmed a Lifetime movie where he co-starred with “Glee’s best dancer, Heather Morris, so maybe she gave him tips. We think he’ll stick around for a while. And we may be setting our DVRs for that Lifetime movie.
Chances: Johnson’s bio indicates she took dance lessons as a kid, so we think she’s got moves. And for anyone thinking she’s too old to win, keep in mind that she’s famous for cartwheeling down the runway after her shows, so don’t count her out too quickly.
Chances: Mota is only 19: Just something to keep in mind about someone with 7 million YouTube followers for her style and makeup tutorials. We think that popularity will help her stay on the show — all those fans have to turn into votes, right?
Chances: Fighting involves some fancy footwork, right? We think Couture will be able to translate those skills, assuming he has some sense of rhythm. But it might be hard for him to work with a partner instead of against one.
Chances: Well, Jones at least shows a willingness for trying new things: She switched from Summer Olympics track events to competing at the Winter Olympics as a bobsledder. But she didn’t win at either Olympics. Maybe this will be the event she finally wins?
Chances: Mr. Chong has certain lifestyle habits that we suspect may inhibit his ability to, say, focus on steps. On the other hand, he’s had these habits for a while, so chances are good he’s able to work with them. Then again, he’s 76 years old!

Chances: Sabato seems like one of those contestants who will surprise viewers with his charm and pizzazz. We give him good odds for reminding people why they liked him in the ’90s.
Chances: We assume Parrish is not quite as sneaky in real life as she is on “Liars, but we’re kind of hoping she plots against the other contestants to rise to the top, just like Mona would.
Chances: A compilation of his dancing on “Fresh Prince has been viewed 7.5 million times on YouTube. Carlton wasn’t known for his moves, but his enthusiasm wins people over. Our money is on Ribeiro to win the whole thing.

Chances: Robertson has written a book and is apparently a motivational speaker despite the fact that she’s only 17. With her full schedule, will she have time to focus on her dancing (and also high school, because she’s still in high school)?

Reasons to jog your memory
1 2
When it comes exercise, even a little bit goes a long way. EDWARD THOMPSON Research is pointing firmly to sitting as the new smoking. While most people know that exercise can curb obesity, heart disease and even certain types of cancer, it also has immediate effects on brainpower. “Physical exercise turns our brain on,” says John Ratey, a psychiatry professor at Harvard University. As it’s become widely accepted that some form of aerobic workout is the most beneficial, harder regimens like CrossFit and endurance races have popularized. A jog around the block no longer seems adequate. But that’s not so. Ratey, a 66-year-old exercise advocate who has been known to make his audiences do Hindu squats, wants to take the focus off people’s choice of activity. You don’t have to push yourself to the limit to gain the benefits of exercise, he says: “Get out and walk!”

Improve your meetings
Some of the most creative companies in the world like Google, Facebook and Apple are known for their walking meetings. Interestingly, the surroundings and environment don’t greatly impact thinking, according to a recent study: “I thought walking outside would blow everything out of the water, but walking on a treadmill in a small, boring room still had strong results, which surprised me,” explains co-author Marily Oppezzo.
Enjoy a lifetime of learning
Getting your body moving will improve your ability to retain and manipulate information. “Doing exercise promotes improvement overall in our capacity to learn,” Ratey says. “What it does in the brain is immense and it really improves the brain’s ability to be [adaptable]. The only way we learn anything is to have ourselves grow at the nerve cell level, so exercise is the best promoter of that.”

Become a morning person
Being active is vital to preventing the onset of cognitive decline that causes dementia and Alzheimer’s, which can’t necessarily be kept at bay through brain teasers like Sudoku and crosswords alone.
A quick trot up to the office might just be what’s needed to prevent that morning meeting sluggishness. In a recent study, researchers from Stanford University found that even a 10-minute walk stimulates creativity inside the brain. “[Study subjects] who were walking were more talkative than those sitting down — their ideas are more active and more urgent in streaming out,” study co-author Dan Schwartz tells us.

Getting in. College admissions demystified with analysis of the latest trends
The average student applies to eight or nine schools, according to AdmitSee. DIGITAL VISION
To college hopefuls, the perfect application is as coveted and elusive as the allegorical golden ticket. Yet information about what admissions offices are actually looking for has always been scarce — until now. Startup AdmitSee collects and analyzes applications from students who successfully matriculated to undergraduate and graduate schools to provide high schoolers with a profile of what catches the eye of admissions officers. “I think what people are most nervous about is the question of ‘How do I make
myself stand out from the crowd?’” says AdmitSee cofounder Stephanie Shyu. She and business partner Lydia Pierce Fayal launched the site last year. Below, they share the trends that AdmitSee has discovered. What is the most popular way to start an essay? Given the topics that most students write about (see right), it’s no surprise that nearly half of the essays AdmitSee collected began with either the word “I” or “I’m.” Many essays also begin with quotes — but not neces-

Billionaire businessman Sir Richard Branson explains his unique leadership style in his new book. Sir Richard Branson has been an entrepreneur nearly his entire life, founding the nowfamous Virgin Group in 1972 at the age of 22. In his latest book, “The Virgin Way: Everything I Know About Leadership,” the businessman takes readers through everything from his hiring process to how entrepreneurs can plan their next move. We sat down with Branson (in his limo, naturally) to get his advice for young workers.
His tips for somebody who has a great idea, but isn’t sure how to sell someone on it
“Keep it simple and clear-cut. And if you find that everybody blanks over, then maybe your idea is not a good one. Having said that, most people would say why an idea is not good. It’s very rare people will say an idea is great. So in the end, if you really believe in what you want to do, you just have to get on and do it.”
Q&A RICHARD BRANSON GOOD LEADERS MAKE JOBS MORE FUN What’s the most important thing for recent college grads and other 20-somethings to keep in mind as they start out in their careers? Well, I think you only live once, and it’s important to spend your life doing something you enjoy and really interests you and that you’ll be really pleased spending your life doing. So if you have a great idea for a business, if you feel you have an idea that can fill a gap and help make people’s lives better: Try it and make a go of it. Don’t do a profession because you think you’re going to make a lot of money in it and it’s going to be horribly dull. A lot of young people are told things like, “You need to do this, this and this, or you need this degree, before you can start a business.” How do you know when the time is right? I think if you want to run a business, I’m not sure that it’s necessary to spend too many years studying. I think it’s better if you get on and do it and learn while doing it. But if you have five or six years building in business

617-277-1990 WWW.INTERPRETERTRAIN.COM rather than studying to build a business, you’re five or six years ahead of everyone else and then you’re not saddled with loads of debt. If you want to become an entrepreneur, I’d say it’s worth taking the risk. How do you know who to hire and who to trust? Well, if it’s your first business, I suspect you’ll have some life-long friends, and it’s always good to have friends around you when building a business. I had two or three friends join me in the early days and it was delightful. Then you just have to get out and interview people and see if they are as passionate about what you do as you are. You want people who passionately believe in what you want to do and surround yourself with those kinds of people. You’ve said that you don’t read business books. Yeah, I haven’t read business books; I’ve glanced at one or two. I think there’s too many lists. So, what I’ve tried to do is write a book that’s more readable and it tells stories.
What is the biggest mistake young entrepreneurs are making? I think a lot of young entrepreneurs are not good delegators; they try to do everything themselves. So they need to fight early on to learn the art of delegation. Why do you feel corporations are so stifling of creativity and personality? It’s strange, because working for companies should be a fun, pleasant experience. And so often, as you say, it is a stifling, boring experience. And people are made to dress in formal clothes — ties and suits. They work out of unpleasant environments and that constitutes their life. Most of their life is spent at work. It is sad and it often comes down to bad leadership, sadly, and a lack of realization that if they were good leaders they would make sure that people enjoyed their jobs. Patriots blast Vikings, are on the board NFL. The Patriots went down 7-0 early, but rebounded in impressive fashion to earn their first victory of the 2014 season.
Matt Cassel and Matt Asiata carved up the Patriots defense, Miami Dolphins-style, on the first series of Sunday’s game at TCF Bank Stadium and the annual guarantee that the Patriots are good for at least 11 wins per season seemed as though its expiration date was finally closing in. But Devin McCourty’s interception and 60-yard return of a Cassel pass at the 7:16 mark of the first quarter signaled the beginning of a textbook Patriots road win and offered assurance that New England will once again be in the mix for AFC supremacy. The Patriots torched Minnesota, 30-7, to move to 1-1 on the 2014 season. The Pats host the Raiders next Sunday (1 p.m., CBS). With 19 seconds remaining in the second quarter, Chandler Jones blocked a
Blair Walsh field goal attempt, scooped the ball up off the ground himself and out-raced the Vikings’ special teams unit 58 yards for a highlight reel touchdown. Jones’ score put the Patriots up 24-7 heading into halftime. The New England defense lived up to pre-season expectations against the Vikings, after stumbling against Miami, as it picked off Cassel four times total. Darrelle Revis grabbed his first interception as a member of the Patriots just over a minute into the second quarter as he stepped in front of Vikings receiver Greg Jennings. Rookie defensive lineman Dominique Easley laid out to grab his first career interception with 6:41 remaining in the game, cradling the ball after it was deflected off a Minnesota receiver. With Vikings star Adrian
Peterson deactivated prior to the game, having been indicted on charges of reckless or negligent injury to a child, the Patriots had the best running back on the field Sunday in Stevan Ridley. The Pats made a point of getting Ridley involved early and often Sunday and the back responded with 101 yards of rushing and a touchdown on 25 carries. Tom Brady was efficient, hitting on 15-of-22 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown. Brady did not throw an interception and finished with a 102.3 rating. Julian Edelman led the Pats in receiving with 81 yards and a touchdown on six catches. MATT BURKE @BurkeMetroBos

I think we have a lot of work to do.” Tom Brady, Patriots quarterback, on how there’s plenty of room for improvement, particularly on offense
What went right All lined up — Tom Brady was sacked just once against the Vikings after unceremoniously being dumped four times against the Dolphins last week. He had much more time in the pocket, showing that the Pats’ offensive line corrected a few things last week in practice.
1
Star search — The Vikings were without Adrian Peterson, so if their offense was going to have a big day it would likely fall on the shoulders of Cordarrelle Patterson, who ran wild on the Rams last week. But the Pats did a nice job containing Patterson, who finished with four catches for 56 yards. Matt Asiata was held to 36 yards on 13 carries. Credit the Patriots

Bills dump Miami, move to 2-0 NFL roundup. Buffalo heads the list of several surprising 2-0 teams across the league. The Bills are staying in Buffalo, and it’s entirely possible that their new era will feature winning football. Buffalo is 2-0 for the first time since 2011, thanks in large part to C.J. Spiller’s 102-yard kickoff return for a touchdown midway through the third quarter. The score put Buffalo up 16-3 over the Dolphins and the Bills walked away with a 29-10 win. Miami running back Knowshon Moreno suffered an elbow injury just 11 minutes into the game and he did not return. Lamar Miller ran for just 46 yards on 11 carries in relief of Moreno. Miami is
now 1-1 on the year. Buffalo’s rookie wide receiver Sammy Watkins was sterling, catching eight balls for 117 yards and a touchdown.
Cincinnati’s rugged defense had little issue grounding the high-flying Falcons Sunday as Atlanta did not score a touchdown until there was 8:35 remaining in the game. Andy Dalton threw for 252 yards and a touchdown, completing 15-of-23 passes. Matt Ryan was picked off three times by the Bengals, who moved to 2-0.
A look at Week 2: •
Redskins 41, Jaguars 10: Kirk Cousins shined after RGIII was injured.
•
Cowboys 26, Titans 10: The Dallas defense picked off Jake Locker twice.
•
Cardinals 25, Giants 14: Eli Manning threw two interceptions.
Browns 26, Saints 24
Brian Hoyer didn’t get the payoff he was looking for last week in leading the Browns to a near comeback victory over the Steelers, but this time he earned Cleveland a “W” by performing well early and late. The Browns went up 10-0 in the first quarter but New Orleans held a 17-16 lead by the 9:32 mark of the third quarter. After going back-and-forth for much of the second half, the game was ultimately decided when Hoyer guided the Browns to an 85-yard drive late in the fourth. Billy Cundiff’s 29yard field goal was good with three seconds remaining and Cleveland dropped the Saints to 0-2.
Bengals 24, Falcons 10
Around the NFL
•
Chargers 30, Seahawks 21: Philip Rivers threw three touchdowns in the upset.
•
Broncos 24, Chiefs 17: Emmanuel Sanders had 108 yards receiving.
•
Packers 31, Jets 24: Jordy Nelson had a whopping 209 yards of receiving.
Panthers 24, Lions 7
The Lions offense, which looked so dynamic last Monday night, looked fatigued six days later. Detroit back Joique Bell was held to 36 yards on 10 carries and Matthew Stafford looked mortal, compiling a 72.5 rating. Cam Newton was efficient in his return from injury, throwing for 281 yards and a touchdown. Buffalo’s Sammy Watkins had a 117-yard receiving day for the victorious Bills Sunday. / GETTY IMAGES
