Dozens of female cab drivers in New York City donned pink scarves Monday to announce the launch of SheRides, a women-only car service that will connect female riders and drivers through an app. The service was conceived by Stella Mateo, an entrepreneur who is married to Fernando Mateo, founder of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers. “This ride matching service intends to empower women to take the wheel,” said Mateo, adding the service is also for women who might not be comfortable riding with male drivers.

Less than 3 percent of taxi drivers in the city are women, and women riders make up some 60 percent of those hailing a cab or requesting a car in the city, said Tamika Mallory, SheRides spokeswoman. The app, set to launch this week, has been pushed back due to high demand, Mallory said. She said the company planned to start with 50 drivers, but after testing the app, found they would need 500 drivers to meet demand. They currently are up to 100 drivers. “This is an opportunity to make money and also have my religious beliefs,” said Ahlam Jaoui, 30. Jaoui said the service will open up jobs for Muslim women like herself, as well as other religions and customs that keep men and women separate.

No discrimination

Level field Hazel Dukes, president of the New York State NAACP, said the service isn’t about “discrimination,” but “inclusion” of women in a male-dominated field. Civil rights lawyer Andrew G. Celli, Jr. said that though men cannot request a car, he doesn’t anticipate legal issues.

A New Jersey man accused of the murder of 6-yearold Etan Patz in 1979 confessed on a videotape played in court on Monday to choking the boy and stuffing him alive in a garbage bag he tossed in an alley. A Manhattan judge will decide whether the confession taped by police in 2012 will be allowed as evidence against Pedro Hernandez, 53, who is accused of kidnap and murder.

“I grabbed him by the neck and started to choke him. I was nervous, my legs were jumping and wanted to let go but I couldn’t let go.” Hernandez, in his taped confession

Patz disappeared on his way to school on May 25, 1979, in SoHo.

The search for the boy gripped the city. Hernandez’s defense attorney argues his client does not understand his legal rights. The attorney, Harvey Fishbein, said Hernandez suffered from mental illness. Patz’s parents were in court, although his mother left before the video was shown. The hearing was set to resume on Tuesday and expected to take several weeks. REUTERS

Debora Rodrigues is an actor from Brazil. / IZABELA GUEDES

Big dreams. She’s working three jobs until she can do acting full-time. You were a successful actress in Brazil. Why did you move to New York? I had a great acting gig, but after a year of the tour, I needed to do something else. I had some money saved, so I decided to come to New York for a two-month acting-for-film class at New York Film Academy. How are you making ends meet as an actor in New York? What is your schedule like? I’m an actor first. That’s my passion and it’s most important to me. But besides going to school

Is it hard for you to budget? Yes. Actors don’t always get paid, even if it’s for a good gig. As an actor, sometimes you do a job anyway because you need the exposure and you aren’t famous enough to charge. It’s very cruel.

How do your auditions and acting gigs affect your retail job? I’m always up front with my employer that being an actor is the most important thing to me. I try

Overall, are you happy with the way things are you for work-wise? I’m happy to have a job, but of course I want to live off my acting. That’s absolutely my plan.

New York lags on nail salon inspections New York City needs to beef up inspections of its 2,000-plus nail salons to ensure that customers are not exposed to health hazards during routine manicures, the city’s top watchdog said on Monday. force of 27 who are responsible for an estimated 5,000 salons in New York, from Long Island to the Canadian border. The public advocate’s office made the recom-

mendation as part of a report on nail salon safety that speaks of “growing concern” for the health of nail salon customers and employees due to unsanitary practices and the use of toxic chemicals. “New York City doesn’t have any jurisdiction over nail salons,” James said in a statement. Across the country diseases ranging from hepatitis to bacterial infections have been transmitted during manicures, the report says. REUTERS

Police investigate complaint from ‘Django’ actress Handcuffs. Police detained Daniele Watts, but she was released after they said she had not broken any laws. The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating after “Django Unchained” actress Daniele Watts accused officers of violating her rights when they handcuffed and detained her while responding to a report of indecent exposure. In a statement released over the weekend, Los Angeles police said its officers had responded to a report from a passerby that a couple were indecently exposed inside a silver Mer-

cedes on Thursday. The officers detained Watts, who is black, and her boyfriend, who is white, but determined the two had not broken any laws and released them. Watts’ boyfriend, Los Angeles chef Brian James Lucas, wrote on his Facebook page on Friday that the police had thought she was a prostitute because of the couple’s attire and their differing skin colors. TMZ on Monday posted audio from the incident, where Watts declines to give the officer her ID and says, “Do you know how many times ... the cops have been called just for being black, because we’re black against white?” The cop then responds “Who brought up the race card? Why?” REUTERS

DC wins support for Iraq campaign World powers backed military measures on Monday to help defeat Islamic State ďŹ ghters in Iraq, boosting Washington’s eorts to set up a coalition, but made no mention of the tougher diplomatic challenge next door in Syria. College was very different in the 1920s Time machine. A recently discovered college application from 1922 shows how much education has changed. To say that the college application process has changed over the course of the last century is a vast understatement. A newly discovered college application from 1922 shows just how much educational standards and cultural expectations have changed over the last 92 years. A student assistant

at Elon University in North Carolina was going through a stack of old maps when he stumbled onto the faded application for what was then known as Elon College’s class of 1926. He promptly asked his boss, special-collections librarian Katie Nash, if he could upload a photo of the one-page application onto the social networking site Reddit. Users of the site were thrilled with the unusual find and the photo has been viewed over a million times and generated over a thousand comments. “Honestly, I’d never heard of Reddit until he did that,” Nash said in an

interview with the Chronicle of Higher Education. “But then it exploded. We were just sort of like, what is going on here?”

What life was like in the early 1920s For some historical context, incoming freshmen in 1922 were coming of age during the presidential administration of Warren G Harding. That same year, the Molly Pitcher Club was formed to advocate the repeal of Prohibition and the Lincoln Memorial was officially dedicated. As for how much it cost to put down a deposit

LIBI

MANHATTAN, BROOKLYN, QUEENS

For consumer disclosure, please visit www.libi.edu & click Consumer Information link.

Offering Associates degrees and certiďŹ cate programs and serving a community of over 1000 students, LIBI offers programs including Homeland Security and Security Management, Court Reporting, Elder Care, Digital Marketing, Hospitality Management, OfďŹ ce Management, Accounting, Business Management and ESL. Students have the opportunity to transfer to four-year colleges in the New York City area and the Northeastern region, as a result of LIBI’s formal agreements with multiple notable colleges and universities. Students will have access to the convenient Tribeca location as well as both the Queens and Long Island Campuses. President Monica Foote of LIBI, who spearheaded the establishment of LIBI’s ďŹ rst Manhattan location, notes “the launch of an LIBI site in Tribeca, a crossroads of the ďŹ nancial and cultural heart of New York City, is the logical next step in the evolution of LIBI, which has focused on providing cutting-edge and in-demand career educationâ€?. College chairman Leon Lee states “the competitive programs we have offered at LIBI for over four decades are aimed at an underserved population, the career-minded student, and tailored to the needs of the New York City business and

legal community, homeland security, and the growing elderly population. As we are closely aligned with these communities, we know that now is the appropriate time to establish a presence in Manhattan.â€? LIBI is entering the New York City ďŹ nancial district, ďŹ lling a much-needed vacancy in quality post-secondary career education. The mission of LIBI has been to provide affordable, high quality post-secondary education, which is especially needed in the current environment. Professors are typically practitioners, with extensive experience in their ďŹ elds, a factor which LIBI’s administration feels differentiates the value of an LIBI education from a job placement standpoint. The emphasis on the transferability of an LIBI education either directly to the business world or to areas of further post-secondary education is a further differentiator: student choice at the end of his or her LIBI education is a major factor in students choosing to enter LIBI. The convenience of a downtown Manhattan location will be another strong draw and a further beneďŹ t to students. LIBI offers generous scholarships and ďŹ nancial aid to students who qualify. In addition, LIBI offers membership to qualiďŹ ed students in the Alpha Beta Kappa National Honors Society. LIBI is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS), one of the oldest and largest national accrediting bodies in the United States.

The Blended Learning Advantage Online learning has taken the education world by storm. An article in Campus Technology Forum says the number of college students taking at least one online course nearly doubled, from 23 percent to 45, over the last five years. But online students can sometimes feel adrift. At SUNY Empire State College, we recognize both your need for a convenient way to study and a way to connect with your faculty and fellow students in a face-to-face environment. That’s where “blended” learning comes in. Because your time is valuable, Empire State College offers you the flexibility of studying entirely online or at one of our locations under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Each student is assigned a mentor who plays a distinctive role that incorporates being an academic advisor, teacher, scholar, facilitator, resource and curriculum creator. Our students may also add to the richness of their studies by meeting with peers for study groups, residencies or classes – again, all under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Students can cross-register at other regionally accredited institutions for classes that may not be available through SUNY Empire State College. The college has many partnerships and agreements with community colleges and others from which your college credits are accepted. (go to http://choose.esc.edu/pathways) The college offers undergraduate (associate and bachelor’s) degrees in 12 areas of study, and master’s degrees in 11, including such in-demand degrees as a Master of Education in Teaching and Learning, a competency-based MBA, an RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a bachelor’s degree with a concentration in emergency management, fire service or homeland security. To learn more about SUNY Empire State College and our locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Old Westbury, Hauppauge, Riverhead, Hartsdale, Nanuet and Newburgh, call 877-372-6759.

MILLIONAIRE

TIMOTHY SYKES TIMOTHYSYKES.COM Timothy Sykes is a millionaire stock trader and entrepreneur.

I’ve made millions in the stock market, written the best-selling book, “An American Hedge Fund,” used the money to travel all over the world, and now my top student just passed $2 million in profits. And I’m only 33 years old. I know a thing or two about success. Here are my top three tips to help you succeed:

Tip No. 1: Study and work hard

Some people find success through sheer luck with little work or effort, but the odds of that happening are very slim. To increase your odds

of being successful, be prepared to study and work harder than you ever thought possible. You can’t just go the normal route and expect to get ahead. Do what you love, even if it’s weird. Some of the most successful people I know think way outside the box, but because of their determination and work ethic, they’ve made it.

Tip No. 2: Embrace failure and learn from it No matter what your passion is, you will screw up somewhere along

Martha Stewart calls out GOOP, and it’s good

CULTURE

Genre bending

Tom Hardy is done with rom-coms You won’t be seeing Tom Hardy in another rom-com anytime soon, and you can blame Reese Witherspoon for that. “I probably won’t do a romantic comedy again, do you know what I mean?” Hardy, who starred with Witherspoon and Chris Pine in “This Means War” in 2012, tells USA Today. “I love to do things I hadn’t done before. I didn’t understand how you could do something which is so fun and be so miserable doing it.” Actually, that Witherspoon dig is a bit unfair, as Hardy freely blames himself for feeling left out on set.

Martha Stewart tried to stay quiet for as long as she could, but come on. You just know you were dying for her to take on Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle guru work at GOOP.com. And Ms. Stewart does not disappoint. It’s a good thing. Using a simple recipe of scolding and faint praise with a light draping of shade for good measure, Stewart tells Porter magazine about Paltrow, “She just needs to be quiet. She’s a movie star. If she were confident in her acting, she wouldn’t be trying to be Martha Stewart.” Yowza. Between the “she just needs to be quiet” dominance and the talking about herself in the third person, it’s like we’re seeing a return of tough-asnails prison inmate Martha Stewart. Ms. Paltrow, may I kindly suggest that you check yourself.

Remembering Amy Winehouse, sort of

Yes, we’ve made that pun we just made in the headline a few times before, like how Robin Thicke blurred the lines of what being faithful in a marriage meant, but this time there’s just no way around it. The singer, whose 2013 hit “Blurred Lines” sparked controversy for many reasons (date rape-y lyrics, sexist video, rip-off of a Marvin Gaye song), has added a new controversy to further sully the song’s reputation. It turns out that he didn’t even have a hand in writing it! In court deposition documents obtained by the Hollywood Reporter (for that aforementioned Marvin Gaye

Maybe we, the human race, have lost our knack for quality, lifelike sculpture. Late singer Amy Winehouse has been immortalized in London with a kind of unfortunate statue of her. Like, to call it her “likeness” is kind of unfair, but at least they got the exaggerated beehive right. At least her father, Mitch Winehouse, above, is pleased. “It is like stopping her in a beautiful moment in time,” he says, according to the Associated Press. “We really hope Amy’s fans love the statue.” If you want to see this thing for yourself, it’s been plopped down in one of Winehouse’s old haunts, the Stables Market in the North London neighborhood of Camden.

Robin Thicke blurs lines even further

rip-off lawsuit) Thicke said, “I was high on Vicodin and alcohol when I showed up at the studio. So my recollection is when we made the song, I thought I wanted — I — I wanted to be more involved than I actually was by the time, nine months later, it became a huge hit and I

wanted credit. So I started kind of convincing myself that I was a little more part of it than I was. … But the reality is, is that Pharrell had the beat and he wrote almost every single part of the song.” So yeah, blurred lines of authorship due to blurred senses from booze and pills. PAT HEALY

Wiig: No ‘Bridesmaids II’ on the horizon If you’ve been holding out for a “Bridesmaids” sequel, Kristen Wiig is here to rain on your parade. “I think it’s OK to have it just be what it was. I appreciate that people want us to do another one, but … it’s just something we knew when we did the first one. It just felt very

special and fun,” she tells Ellen DeGeneres during an interview. Wiig says she and writing partner Annie Mumolo, who shared an Oscar nomination for the “Bridesmaids” script, are onto something new now. “We are writing something else that’s very different.”

Talking point

Governator’s smudge preserved for all to see When Arnold Schwarzenegger sat for his official portrait to hang in the California State Capitol building, he wore a lapel pin featuring the face of wife Maria Shriver. The thing is, when the portrait was finally revealed in Sacramento, the pin was mysteriously missing. One former aide to the governor, Clay Russell, summed up the feelings on the absence, telling the L.A. Times, “It’s too bad they couldn’t remove it without creating a smudge that got a lot of attention.” Ouch.

Dawn O’Porter’s so-called life Young Adult. British TV personality Dawn O’Porter has a lot in common with the characters in her new young adult novel, “Paper Airplanes.

British TV personality and journalist Dawn O’Porter might be 35 and expecting her first child, but she admits she often still acts like a teenager. “I did this program for TLC last year in the U.K. where I’d spy on teenagers with their parents, she says. “The parents would say they were going away for the weekend, and then we would spy on them. The whole time, I wanted to say, ‘Just let them have a messy room and sleep in! That’s what we do!’ And I realized I was saying that as one of them. Out this month is O’Porter’s new young adult novel, a story of two unlikely best friends that’s so right on that it’s generating a lot of pre-release buzz. The book is about two high schoolers, Flo and Renee. Flo is the timid one, not brave enough to stand up to her Regina George-esque frenemy. She also has quite serious problems at home. Renee is the classic boy-obsessed party girl. After her mother dies, she and her younger sister move in with their stoic grandparents. When Flo’s father dies, the two form an unlikely bond. “You go through so much when you’re a teen, but you don’t have the emotional capacity that you do when you’re an adult, O’Porter says. Her book realistically addresses traumas that are a big deal to teens, of course, but also how the little things, such as boys and embarrassing moments, are a big deal, too. Much of Renee’s character was taken from O’Porter’s own life. Like the character, she lost her mother when she was

It was all so basic, but it reminded me how overwhelming everything felt because you don’t have experience under your belt to put it all in perspective. O’Porter and her husband, actor Chris O’Dowd (“Bridesmaids, “Girls) recently announced they are expecting a child of their own by posting a video of O’Dowd doing the ice-bucket challenge and then nominating “baby O’Porter, followed by his wife dumping a glass of water on her pregnant belly. But even with babies on the brain, O’Porter says the book hasn’t changed her views of parenthood just yet. “I’m so many years away from even dealing with a teenager that it’s not even on my radar, she says. “Fundamentally I’m still a teenager, but obviously that’s about to change. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence emily.laurence@metro.us

“The Terrorist’s Son: A Story Of Choice” by Zak Ebrahim

This true story is short, but it’s powerful. Author Zak Ebrahim’s father was one of the terrorists who helped plan the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center. You are supposed to love your family unconditionally. But what if someone in your family is responsible for something unbelievably evil? Ebrahim not only gives a rare and intriguing view into his life — ever wonder how a terrorist treats his own family? — he explains how he still turned out to be a man of love, compassion and peace. Ebrahim has made speaking out against terrorism his life mission. Violence does not always breed violence. He is one example.

“Barracuda” by Christos Tsilokas For 15-year-old Danny, being one of the fastest swimmers in his hometown defines him. It’s earned him an athletic scholarship at his elite prep school — one his family would not have otherwise been able to send him to — where his friends lovingly call him “Barracuda.” At home, his little brother looks up to him, taking pride in his big brother’s swimming skills. With dreams of the Olympics realistically in his future, life for Danny is pretty good. But then the unexpected occurs. It doesn’t happen. Danny’s struggle to figure out who he is without swimming is a journey that will have you hooked. But that’s not all this book is about. It’s about race, class and the clash between a son and the father who doesn’t quite believe in him.

“The Future For Curious People” by Gregory Sherl

Most people date hoping to find someone to fall in love with. That’s the end goal, right? If you’ve been playing the dating game for a while, chances are you are sick of going from partner to partner. But if you could know when — or if — you will fall in love, would you want to know? Would you want to skip the trial-and-error process so your heart stays a little less broken? “The Future For Curious People” poses questions like these. Dr. Chin specializes in telling people their romantic fate. When two of his clients keep seeing one another in their “futures,” they must decide if they should act on it. This book poses a lot of questions about life and love you’ll be tempted to ask your friends, or even on your next date.

“Mastering The Art of Soviet Cooking: A Memoir of Food and Longing” by Anya Von Bremzen It’s rare to come across a food memoir in which the author is as talented a writer as he or she is a chef, but Anya Von Bremzen excels at both. Anya was born in Russia at a time when food was scarce. When her family moved to the U.S., a whole new world of food opened up to her. With vast cooking resources at their disposal, Bremzen and her mom decide to cook a lavish Russian dinner once a week while Bremzen’s mother and grandmother pass along stories from the family’s history. This book will tell you how to make borsch, but more importantly will introduce you to a family and culture that is rich in so many ways.

Saying ‘Yes!’ to a new sound

26

Visit Metro.us to watch Jason Mraz’s favorite “I’m Yours” cover. YouTube covers galore

He’s yours

Jason Mraz was sick of releasing what he felt sounded like the same album over and over again, so he called on some friends who said, “Yes!” / GETTY IMAGES

Hot tickets. Jason Mraz has teamed up with Raining Jane before, but never for a full album.

JASON MRAZ JEN ROSENSTEIN

At this point, 12 years into his career as a coffeehouseturned-arena-playing singer/songwriter, Jason Mraz knows what works. He gets that his fans want a mellow, light rock album full of sticky-sweet love songs. So, when it comes time to record a new album, he doesn’t feel the pressure to reinvent himself. “I honestly feel that I’ve made the same record every time,” he says, unabashedly. That being said, his latest album, “Yes!,” a complete collaboration with

the all-female folk rock band Raining Jane, is a bit different. Though Mraz and Raining Jane have met up to write songs twice a year for the past seven years, he says they didn’t plan to make an album. “We had no agenda other than just meeting up to write and have fun,” Mraz says. Some of the songs ended up on past Mraz albums, while others became hits for other singers, such as John Mayer. After a few particularly rewarding sessions in 2013, Mraz liked the songs so much, he decided to bundle them up into one album, that being the newly released, “Yes!” “It was a happy accident,” he says. “We didn’t actually know we were writing an album. I think that would have sounded a lot different had we sat

around thinking, ‘OK, this has to be on the record.’” Mraz says every album should tell a story. Not surprisingly, the songs on “Yes!” tell a love story. It starts out recognizing that you do love someone. “[Then] there’s a little heartbreak, and we just have to accept what’s meant to be. There’s compassion in the love story. There’s forgiveness. There’s acceptance. And the resolve is contentment, which is used to shine on.” Though Mraz is busy touring, he’s already writing new songs. “The best material is always the stuff that needs to be written,” he says. “It’s the stuff that comes out of emotion, passion and the need to express or interpret something.” From the sound of it, there’s no shortage of love stories left to tell.

“It’s always an honor as a songwriter to see another musician take the effort to play your songs and embody the words. My favorite ‘I’m Yours’ cover that I saw was the little itchy nose kid playing the ukulele. He’s just sitting in his closet playing the uke and his nose is itching. He even played the diminished chord, which not a lot of people do!” If you go

‘Swift’ change of pace Jazz. Marco Benevento adds a new instrument to his eclectic stylings: his voice.

If you go

Marco Benevento Tonight, 8 Mercury Lounge 217 East Houston St. $24, 212-260-4700 Wednesday, 8 p.m. Rough Trade 64 N. Ninth St $24, 800-745-30000 Both: www.ticket master.com “It’s a very vulnerable place to be a singer, says Marco Benevento. You just get over yourself and do it the best you can. MICHAEL BENEVENTO

Jazz pianist Marco Benevento has never been one to stick to tradition. Whether it’s fusing jazz with rock ’n’ roll or jam-band stylings, or wiring pickups to his acoustic piano and running the output through various effects pedals, Benevento consistently endeavors to push boundaries. On his latest album, “Swift, Benevento continues this explorative arc by adding a new instrument to the mix: his voice.

Benevento is no stranger to singing, having sung throughout his youth. But his jazz studies at the Berklee College of Music led him away from singing. It wasn’t until he and several friends decided to recreate The Bands’ “Last Waltz a few years ago that the thought of singing crept back into his mind. “My part in that was to do the Garth Hudson parts, but I also did the Dr. John ‘Such a Night’ part. I sang that, and a lot of my friends were like, ‘You’re nailing this Dr. John thing.’ An opportunity to perform the music of James Booker at the New Orleans Jazz Festival and a move to Woodstock, New York, pushed him further in that

direction. “Playing with the locals up in Woodstock, I’ve been singing a little more, Benevento says. “And, honestly, after a night full of heavy instrumental music and heavy jamming, it’s a nice relief in our set for me to actually start singing. Not that Benevento is taking it any easier on stage. Already running his piano through multiple effects pedals, he also controls the effects for his vocals, while triggering drum loops with his feet and playing synth parts with his right hand. “Yeah, there’s a lot going on, but I’ve been doing it all my life, so it just feels like a natural progression, he says.

On writing lyrics

“I almost work backwards compared with a Bob Dylan or [John] Lennon. What I imagine them kind of doing is writing the story ďŹ rst then ďŹ guring out how to ďŹ t the words and music together. I’m doing the opposite. I have the music and the grooves, chords and melody, and then I shape the words as I go along.â€? Benevento

A lifelong journey

Finding his voice, literally Benevento chuckles when he remembers an exchange with guitarist and sometime bandmate Charlie Hunter at Jazz Fest in New Orleans. “I started doing my new songs, and he was, like, ‘It took you 30 years to learn how to play the piano. Now, it’s going to take you 30 years to learn how to sing.’ “It was almost discouraging, but it actually egged me on. I was, like, ‘Right, I can do it. I have to start somewhere. I have to start now.’ That way, I’m learning a new instrument. BRIAN HORGEA @metroneyork

Kevin Kline irritates Maggie Smith en francais in “My Old Lady.” / COHEN MEDIA GROUP

Speaking French with Kevin Kline Interview. The Oscar-winner finally gets to share a screen with Maggie Smith in “My Old Lady.”

KEVIN KLINE RETURNS TO FRANCE FOR THE DRAMEDY “MY OLD LADY.” GETTY IMAGES

“My Old Lady” is not Kevin Kline’s first French film (though it’s mostly in English). In “Queen to Play,” he spoke the language fluently. (And of course, he played a stereotypical French pseudo-stud in “French Kiss.”) But in “My Old Lady,” adapted by Israel Horovitz from

his play, he’s an American who mangles his limited knowledge of the language, playing a malcontent displeased that his late father’s Parisian apartment is unexpectedly populated by an old tenant (Maggie Smith) and her daughter (Kristin Scott Thomas). Was your experience with French films or playing French how you got involved with this? I was sent the play by a very nice, misguided French producer, because he thought I could speak French well enough that I could do it in French. I begged to differ. Years

went by and I was in Paris. It was the weirdest thing. I was doing press on “Queen to Play,” and I’m with friends at the Cafe de Flore, where Sartre invented existentialism. I go upstairs to the men’s room and I see Israel and a couple other people. Israel said, “You know, we were just talking about you.” They were talking about who should play the lead in the film and someone said, “Kevin Kline.” And then I just appeared. Israel thought it was staged. Your character hasn’t remotely settled down, despite being in his 50s.

I’ll say. I’d hate to be late 50s and be nowhere. He’s still wrestling with demons he should have reconciled with 30 years before. Part of the story is that even though you could be in your 50s or 60s or 70s or 80s, contrary to what kids think of people that age, they don’t have it all figured out. In the last 10 years, I’ve embraced more and more the sensation that I’ll never understand everything. I accept that. I won’t understand most things. I don’t understand how we think. Bonus question

‘Just a gal’ Do you still get intimidated working with someone like Maggie Smith? Maggie’s just a gal. She gives great foot rubs. Look, I just did a movie [“Last Vegas”] with Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas and Morgan Freeman, none of whom I’d ever worked with. You realize, “Oh, they’re actors, and we’re all friends. I can’t be in awe of them.” I can’t be in awe of Maggie Smith. In between takes, I’d ask her about doing “Othello” with Olivier, and I’d hear these great stories about [Sir John] Gielgud and [Sir Ralph] Richardson. But you realize she’s pretty good, so I must be pretty good, too, because I’m in a scene with her. And she agreed to do this scene with me! So I must be doing pretty OK!

And BoJack himself becomes strangely decent and likable, warming without turning overly sentimental. It’s a whinnyer! (Sorry.)

Top hipster cities

You heard it here first: These cities have some of the trendiest art, music and food scenes around the globe.

Somerville

Somerville is where hipsters live and hang out in The Hub. It has the college town’s best coffee and some of its best restaurants. With Boston’s quirkiest street festivals, Somerville always has something exciting and interesting happening. For a fun time, just head to Davis Square and take in the ridiculousness of the locals.

East London

Berlin It’s undoubtedly Europe’s coolest city. With 24-hour nightlife, a growing culinary scene and affordable living, Berlin has attracted people from all over the world. DJs want to play Berlin’s clubs and artists want their work shown in the hundreds of independent galleries. I love Berlin for its independent spirit and creative culture. There’s always something interesting happening here.

Shoreditch and Hackney have turned from workingclass neighborhoods to gentrified versions of their former selves. Speakeasies, food trucks and fashion shops that sell goods not just for you, but for your pets, are on every street. And with enough vintage markets to clothe a nation, the fashion in Shoreditch is a big draw. It has a quirky but cool style.

Austin is the new Portland. It attracts free spirits, hippies and more than a few aspiring musicians. Sometimes it feels like there are more food trucks than people. There’s a reason they want to “Keep Austin Weird.” But the coolest part of Austin is probably the food scene; you can get everything from trendy foods at a food truck to Texas-themed sushi.

Toronto’s Queen Street West neighborhood is far from tame. The Ossington neighborhood is packed with trendy bars and divier bars, with cupcake bakeries and cute cafes scattered among them.

The book is packed with ideas for parents and teachers for making playtime not only engaging, but a little messy — and what kid doesn’t love a mess? To keep things manageable, they outline their

Directions:

1

Decide how many colors you want to make. Divide your rice into plastic bags accordingly. For every handful of rice, add a good squirt of hand sanitizer, or about a teaspoon of vinegar, and either a few drops of artiďŹ cial coloring or about a quarter-teaspoon of natural coloring, depending on how bright you want the batch to be and how much drying time you have. Remember that natural coloring requires more volume than artiďŹ cial to achieve similar results.

2

Squeeze out the air and close o each bag, then massage the color through the rice. When you’re satisďŹ ed with the evenness of color distribution, pour the rice out onto a sheet of newspaper and leave to dry. Drying time depends on the distributor used.

3

When you have your stash of dry and colorful rice, lay out the big sheet, bring out some tools for tipping

and mixing, and watch your children go to town.

4

When they’re done with the mess, simply remove everything that isn’t rice, collect the corners of the sheet, and funnel your rice into a container, ready to play with another day. Vacuum up any grains that escape the sheet, and no one will know — until you post the pictures online, of course. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

How to play Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1-9. There is no math involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

Discourse on male victims distracts from Ray Rice issue Re: ‘Men can be victims, too’ (Metro, Sept. 15) Letter writer Byron Watson has a valid point in saying that men can be victims of domestic violence on the same scale as women, and it is true that this type of crime is often played off by society as “nonserious.” However, discussing the abuse of men during this case in which Janae Rice was the victim of a horrific attack does nothing but distract from the terrible nature of the crime and remove much-needed empathy for her. The obvious fact of the matter is that Ray Rice is not a victim of domestic violence, but an

abuser who deserves the harsh media scrutiny he received for harming his then-fiancee in such a way. Implying that men would be mocked for the reverse scenario is conceivable, but irrelevant in this context. B. MASON, VIA EMAIL Surely battered women everywhere will rest easier knowing that men can be victims, too. This assertion, true as it is, doesn’t add anything to the discussion about what happens to women with odious frequency. Would a woman abuser’s speculative immunity change the fact that Rice’s alleged actions are absolutely prosecutable? SCOTT PERRY, VIA EMAIL

Mornhinweg takes the blame in timeout error NFL. The Jets’ coordinator said he called for the illtimed stoppage and needed to trust his quarterback. Jets fans looking for a scapegoat for Sunday’s timeout fiasco found a willing party on Monday. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg absolved blame from both head coach Rex Ryan and Sheldon Richardson. “I want to make it crystal clear everything that goes on offensively is my responsibility, period,” Mornhinweg said Monday. “I’ve got to do a better job of communicating and trusting ‘Big Geno’ [Smith]. I’ve got to trust Geno to get everything fixed before the 40-second [play] clock. That’s the scenario. I was surprised the timeout was called.” Mornhinweg ran down the sideline to get the attention of Ryan, because only head coaches are permitted to call timeouts from the sideline. But when Smith shifted to the running back to the proper alignment, Mornhinweg no longer needed the stoppage. Richardson,

who was standing next to Ryan and the official who blew the whistle, merely was trying to help out Mornhinweg when he said the Jets wanted a timeout. “It’s fourth down, it’s a big play and we want to make sure it’s right and by the time I looked over at Marty — I never saw Marty initially — but he’s coming down,” Ryan said Monday. “So Sheldon apparently sees the timeout and as he sees it, that’s why he runs up and says ‘timeout’ to the [official].” Of course, the only reason the play has been dissected like the Zapruder film since Sunday evening is because Jeremy Kerley ended up catching a 36yard touchdown on the play. The score was nullified by the timeout and the Jets eventually turned the ball over on downs. Ryan seemed ready to move on from the incident Monday. “You know what, it really doesn’t matter now [whether the ball was snapped before the whistle],” Ryan said. “We can sit back and say, ‘Hey, yeah, it definitely was or it wasn’t,’ or whatever. It doesn’t matter.” MARK OSBORNE @MetroNYSports

NFL. Decker injury still question mark going into next week’s game

It was, as usual, a big day for injuries on Sunday. •

There was no further clarity on wide receiver Eric Decker’s injury Monday — and the offense may be looking pretty dismal as a result. Decker aggravated his hamstring in the third quarter Sunday against the Packers and did not return to the game despite trying to work it out on the sideline. He missed time in preseason with the same injury. “We don’t know right now [how serious the injury is],” Rex Ryan said Monday. “We’ll see. Hopefully he’ll be ready to roll on Monday [next

week against the Bears].” The Jets signed Decker in the offseason to wake up a stagnant offense devoid of many weapons. Wide receivers David Nelson and Jeremy Kerley, the same secondary pieces from a year ago, were on the field late in the game with Decker out. Greg Salas also saw extended playing time. Decker had four receptions for 63 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown, against the Packers. He had five catches for 74 yards in Week 1. METRO

The news isn’t good on Robert Griffin III, but he didn’t suffer a fractured ankle. Griffin suffered a dislocated left ankle, but he will not need surgery and could return this season.

Saints back Mark Ingram will be out a month with a broken hand.

Former Jet star John Abraham will not have to retire as feared. The Cardinals end suffered a concussion in Week 1, but is nearing clearance to return.

Coughlin says Giants ‘beat themselves’ with mistakes NFL. New York’s head coach was no calmer Monday after squandering a game due to some costly mistakes. The Giants could’ve conducted a clinic in Sunday’s 25-14 loss to the Cardinals — if that clinic was on how to find creative ways to give away a game. Head coach Tom Coughlin, who had a day to cool off and reflect, still sounded like he had a gnawing feeling in his gut. “We beat ourselves, yes, we did. So, we’re back to that axiom as old as football,” Coughlin said. “This is professional football. Make the plays necessary to win and eliminate these bizarre events which take the heart right out of you.”

Tom Coughlin was mad at just about everyone during yesterday’s meltdown. / GETTY IMAGES Quoted

“I’m a believer. Put me up at the top, OK? Blame me for the problems, put me at the top as far as getting this thing done. … But I do think they can turn this around and go do it [win games].” Tom Coughlin, Giants head coach, on the doubt creeping in about the team after an 0-2 start

Coughlin admitted losing was bad enough, but it was how the Giants (0-2) lost that really perturbed him. The dropped passes, missed tackles on the 71yard game-winning punt return by Ted Ginn Jr., the lack of forced turnovers and ill-timed giveaways are still unsettling to the

coach. And while he still “believes” Big Blue can turn around their season and “get this thing done,” he admitted they’ll need to shore up the loose ends and perfect the basics — like catching the ball. “Catch the ball. That’s what you’re paid for. Professional wide receivers have got to make plays,” said Coughlin, who noted the offense as a whole let down the team. “You are not going to beat anybody in the National Football League with 14 points.” One of those players who had a handful of crucial drops was Victor Cruz, who asked for more targets last week. “I’ll visit with him … on a whole bunch of subjects,” Coughlin said. Thurmond out for year The Giants have already lost one of their notable offseason signings. Cornerback Walter Thurmond was signed away from Seattle for $3 million to add depth to the secondary. Tests on Monday showed he will need surgery on a torn pectoral muscle and be out the rest of the season. “We’re going to obviously miss Walter, but we have some other guys that have played and played well,” Tom Coughlin said. “[Trumaine] McBride has played well last year, so he’s going to have to step up.” METRO

MLB. Tanaka pitches simulated ted game, could return to Yankees es Masahiro Tanaka appears to be nearing a return to the Yankees rotation. It just comes about a month too late. The rookie, who suffered a partial tear in his right pitching elbow in July, threw five innings in a simulated game in Tampa on Monday afternoon and came out of it feeling good. “I do feel I’m closer to being game-ready, Tanaka told reporters through a translator. Tanaka was diagnosed with the elbow injury, recommended a course of rest and then a throwing program where he could test whether he’d be able to return to the Yankees this season. If the partial tear did not improve, the doctors would have recommended Tommy John surgery.

By the numbers

.517

The Yankees have lost ground in the division since Tanaka went down, but their record before the injury of 46-44 (.511) and after the injury of 30-28 (.517) are remarkably similar.

Monday’s outing further indicates Tanaka will not need surgery. However, the rehab has taken so long it means little to the Yankees should he return this season. Tanaka last pitched July 8 in Cleveland when he surrendered five runs and 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings. The Yankees were just four games back in the AL East at that point. Over two months later, they are 12 1/2 games back in the AL East and five back in the wild

card, entering Monday’s game with Tampa Bay. “As far as my performance goes, I think it is gradually getting better, Tanaka told reporters. “It is not really a regular-season game atmosphere. It is a little bit hard for me to get up to there. The Yankees have just 13 games remaining in the season. Should the Yankees bother to bring Tanaka back he would probably replace Chris Capuano in the rotation. The veteran left-hander made the start Monday night in the series opener against the Rays. Capuano would have two starts left this season. METRO

Reliever Vic Black underwent an MRI on his injured throwing shoulder Monday. The Mets diagnosed the injury as a rotator cu strain and will shut him down for about a week before he tests his arm again. “It’s conceivable he won’t pitch again this season, but we’re not shutting him down completely,â€? general manager Sandy Alderson said.
