Greater Boston. Gaming Commission approves Everett plan over Mohegan. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission chose Wynn Resorts Ltd.’s Everett casino proposal over Mohegan Sun’s plans for a Suffolk Downs gaming facility in Revere on Tuesday. Despite traffic concerns in nearby Sullivan Square in Charlestown, the commission approved Wynn’s plan by a 3-to-1 margin at the teacher’s union hall on Mt. Vernon Street in Dorchester. Commissioners Bruce Stebbins, Enrique Zuniga and Gayle Cameron all favored Wynn, while Commissioner James F. McHugh favored the Mohegan plan. The commission’s chairman Stephen P. Crosby recused himself from the vote earlier this year after concerns were raised about his impartiality.

Visit Metro.us to view a slideshow of the events leading up to Tuesday’s vote.

Last week, the effect of Wynn’s $1.6 billion plan on local traffic troubled Cameron. She assessed their traffic plan to be “inadequate and incomplete.” Wynn, however, had agreed to pay penalties should traffic exceed their projections, so long as the payments were capped at $20 million over 10 years. Wynn wants to redevelop about 26 acres of former industrial land along the Mystic River. Their proposal includes river dredging and environmental cleanup, including the cleanup of a site that was once home to a chemical company. Wynn’s financial plan, said Zuniga last week, was “very good with outstanding elements, namely the ability to obtain project capital, commitment to spend [materially more] required capital and their view of the potential market opportunity of a [Greater Boston] location.” Zuniga, meanwhile, had assessed Mohegan’s financial plan as “sufficient with one insufficient element, namely their view of the potential market opportunity of a Region A (Greater Boston) location.” There were also concerns about the project’s debt ratio. The commission had said it wanted to see evidence of an additional $100 million in equity for the project and Mohegan topped that in an attempt to assuage the financial concerns, saying

they will add another $150 million to their plan. It apparently wasn’t enough. Suffolk Downs COO Chip Tuttle said he was “extraordinarily disappointed” in the decision, suggesting it could mean the end of the 79-yearold Revere racetrack and thousands of job losses. The approval comes a little more than a month before Massachusetts voters will consider Question 3, a Nov. 4 ballot initiative that proposes to repeal the casino law.

North Attleboro. Hernandez felt ‘helpless’ around cops during search Former New England Patriots star and alleged murderer Aaron Hernandez wants a judge to throw out statements he made to police as they searched his North Attleboro home last summer, claiming he felt “helpless” and “concerned” for his family around the officers. “I felt helpless in the face of the occupation of my house by the police,” the ex-athlete said

in new court documents. “I was also very concerned about what would happen to my fiance and our baby if I refused to answer their questions. I did not feel free to leave at any time during the search.” Hernandez is due to stand trial in December for the June 2013 shooting death of Odin Lloyd, who was found dead near Hernandez’s home. Late-night weekend ridership tops half-million mark

Tsarnaev’s lawyers deny FBI impersonation claim

A total of 518,794 late-night weekend MBTA trips have been taken since March, when the transit agency started offering extended service between 12:30 a.m. and 3 a.m, the T stats released on Tuesday show. The Green Line has provided the most trips with a grand total of 90,383 over the last 25 weeks. The Red Line has provided 90,099 trips, the Orange Line 53,454 and the Blue Line 26,942. T officials have said they made no ridership projections prior to the start of the year-long late-night pilot program. Under the program, the last trains depart downtown stations around 2:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights and approximately 1 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday nights.

Defense attorneys for Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s are denying reports that they were kicked out of Russia for posing as FBI employees while investigating the case there. Attorneys told the AP on Monday that “at no time have members of the defense team misrepresented themselves or lied about their work.” They said that by repeating “reckless allegations,” prosecutors, who mentioned the claim in court papers filed Friday, are making it harder for them to prepare for trial. Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty to the April 15, 2013, terror attack that killed three and injured 264. He has also denied killing MIT police officer Sean Collier days after the bombings. METRO

Pussy Riot band invades Cambridge police station Harvard University. Members of the internationally famous punk group investigated the arrest of an alleged trespasser Monday.

Pussy Riot talks about Putin at Harvard

Previously incarcerated members of the political protest band Pussy Riot spent Monday night in a Cambridge clink following a guest appearance at Harvard University, but it wasn’t the punk rockers who were behind bars. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Masha Alekhina, who gained international attention after being jailed in their native Russia for criticizing President Vladimir Putin, occupied the Cambridge Police Department after Harvard

alumnus Roman Torgovitskiy was arrested for trespassing at a forum earlier that night. Torgovitskiy was allegedly violating an order to remain off university property due to his arrest there in May while protesting the war in Ukraine. Tolokonnikova and Alekhina, who were featured guests at the forum, said they followed Torgovitskiy to the jailhouse to “investigate” the arrest.

The duo said they would not leave until Torgovitskiy was released. He was set free just before midnight. Pussy Riot rejoiced on Twitter, saying “We’ve just managed to free Roman Torgovitskiy — police released him, woohoo!” The pair reportedly wants to set up a summit with Harvard in support of the activist.

Tolokonnikova and Alekhina’s Monday night talk was titled “A Conversation with the Feminist Protest Art Collective Pussy Riot” and was hosted by Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. The pair spoke about Putin’s leadership, and the consequential “brain drain” in Russia. “The problem with Putin is that he brings the level of political discussion to the Stone Age,” Tolokonnikov said. “People are leaving because his international actions are dictated by paranoia.”

An MIT doctoral candidate and Cambridge resident is trying to shed light on the darkest, most clandestine corners of the federal government. Ryan Shapiro has become a thorn in the side for some of America’s most powerful spies and cops through litigation and hundreds of public records requests. In one instance, he is trying to force the CIA to release records pertaining to a contentious U.S. Senate investigation of the agency’s past torture program by trying to sue them into compliance. There’s an ongoing dispute between the CIA and a U.S. Senate subcommittee regarding the body’s review of the CIA’s torture program. Some have suggested the CIA broke the law by searching the subcommittee’s computers. Now, Shapiro, along with journalist Jason Leopold have filed suit, seeking a copy of all written correspondence between the subcommittee and the CIA, as well as all records documenting the CIA investigation into the search of the committee’s computers. “The CIA appears to have spied upon the very Senate intelligence committee tasked with overseeing the CIA’s torture program, while at the same time smearing that Senate committee’s review with

unsupported allegations of criminality, said Shapiro. Shapiro says that while the Freedom of Information Act is one of the more “under appreciated aspects of the American experiment, it is toothless without the proper penalties to ensure compliance, hence all the litigation. “The democratic process cannot meaningfully function without an informed citizenry, and such a citizenry is impossible without broad public access to information about the

operations of government, Shapiro told us in a recent interview. “It’s time for the CIA and the rest of the U.S. intelligence community to recognize transparency not as a threat, but rather as an essential component of viable democracy. The U.S. Department of Justice, which is handling the CIA suit, did not respond to requests for comment. A six-figure settlement with the family of an autistic boy who was molested by a teacher’s assistant in 2011 raises serious questions about the Boston Public Schools’ hiring processes, the boy’s attorney, Mitchell Garbedian, said. US pledges 3,000 troops to fight Ebola Outbreak. U.N. officials issued stern warnings of the scale of the task ahead. President Barack Obama will send 3,000 troops to West Africa to build treatment clinics and train health workers to try to halt the spread of the deadly Ebola virus, he said Tuesday, as the U.S. widens its response to the crisis. The U.S. plan, a dramatic increase from Washington’s initial response last week, won praise from aid workers and officials in the region. But health experts said it was still not Death toll

enough to contain the epidemic, which is quickly growing and has caused local health care systems to buckle from the strain. U.S. officials said the focus of the military deployment would be Liberia, the hardest hit of the countries affected by the crisis. The worst Ebola outbreak since the disease was identified in 1976 has already killed nearly 2,500 people. A senior official with the World Health Organization said the outbreak requires a much faster response to contain its spread to tens of thousands of cases. “We don’t know where the numbers are going on this,” WHO Assistant Director General Bruce Aylward told a news conference, calling the crisis “unparalleled in modern times.” Obama’s plan calls for sending the 3,000 troops, including engineers and medical personnel, to build 17 treatment centers with 100 beds each, train thousands of health care workers and establish a military center to control the relief effort. A serious respiratory illness sickening U.S. children has spread to 12 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Tuesday, as it predicted that more states will report cases in coming weeks. The growing list of states with confirmed cases now includes Alabama, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, New York, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania, the CDC said. Known as enterovirus-68, the somewhat rare virus can cause symptoms ranging from mild fevers to difficulty breathing and wheezing severe enough to require hospitalization. Since mid-August, the CDC has received reports of 130 people with confirmed cases of the virus. There is no vaccine, and infants, children and teenagers have the greatest risk of infection. Many of the children who became very ill in Missouri and Illinois, where early outbreaks were seen, had asthma or a history of wheezing, said the CDC, which is working with state health officials to better understand infection trends. With or without U2 on your iTunes If you were one of the millions of iTunes users less than thrilled to wake up last week to find a brand-new U2 album you never ordered sitting in your library, fear not. In the wake of a massive amount of complaints about the album being automatically

downloaded to users’ devices without permission, Apple has released a tool to help remove the 11-track “Songs of Innocence” album. “Some customers asked for the ability to delete ‘Songs of Innocence’ from their library, so we set up [a tool] to let them

easily do so,” said an Apple spokesman who is apparently a big fan of putting things mildly, considering the tone of many of the online responses to the album’s sudden appearance. And in the silliest of warnings, Apple advised that once removed, the album

will no longer be available to re-download as a previous purchase. At the iPhone 6 announcement last week, U2 announced that the album would be “made available” to iTunes users for free, which is slightly different than “added to your

FREEMAN is Freeman as a free man Captain Fantasy. Once known to the world as Gene Ween, the singer has gone solo and pursues cleaner living.

For nearly 30 years, Aaron Freeman was known endearingly to his listeners as Gene Ween. The co-founder and lead singer of the surrealist and whimsical psychedelic band Ween, Freeman was a vocal shape-shifter that helped define the continually evolving sound of a band that innovated through emulating. From bedroom band to an epic live act, Ween recorded 11 studio records in 28 years before Freeman put an end to the project in 2012. Realizing the band’s loose lifestyle had led to a life of addiction, Freeman decided to get help. “Basically, my brain was fried,” says Freeman. “I just couldn’t get out of the cycle of addiction.” After battling a creative

block and recording an album of Rod McKuen covers, Freeman, now two years sober, returns with his first album of original work since the band’s demise. Using his given name with an undeniable and inherent metaphor within, FREEMAN shows Freeman at his most honest and heartfelt, but fans will still find those unmistakable Gene Ween stylings that have always tied his songs together. “I don’t have to sing about that ‘Jimmy-Jack-PammityFlack’ like Ween did,” notes Freeman half sarcastically. “Even if this record sucked, it would be a statement that ‘Hey, you can move on and you can do this,’ and I think a lot of people appreciate that in life. I’m glad to maybe be an example for some people. If there are some fans that are pissed because maybe we broke their adolescent dream, whatever!” NOLAN GAWRON @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

“I think my music all gathers in my subconscious for a while. Usually what happens is it gets stored in there and then it just spills out. That’s just always how I’ve worked. One day I was just sitting here on the porch that I’m

sitting on now, looking out at the rocks and the chipmunks with my guitar and it just came out. It just kept coming, and all of a sudden I had 15 or 16 songs. It was great. I really didn’t know if I could write again, so to feel it coming out of me from that same place that it always had was just great.”

But yeah, building robots was superawesome.” Rodriguez acknowledges that when people first look at her, they might not immediately think “welding” and “robots,” but that’s their loss. “It’s not something that you’d expect, but it was just a fun time. You’re actually thinking something in your head and then executing it and actually seeing it done. I think it’s just a really cool school program that should be promoted more. And you’re having fun with your friends and working on a robot. How cool is that?” So what was it her kick-ass team created, exactly? “Basically, it was a really tough robot, a crocodile,” she explains. “It was built at an angle, so it would come under you and just chomp you down into pieces and break you down. So even if you’re a bigger robot in size, it could just scoop you out from under it — trip it and kill it.”

Fightin’ words

Don’t go in the water And if robots aren’t enough for you, she’s also an avid “Shark Week” aficionado — something that helped her build more appreciation for the massive beast at the center of “Tusk,” the walrus. “I was watching ‘Shark Week’ this last time, and I realized that sharks do not mess with walruses. They don’t,” she says. “They

have weapons, and they’re just stronger. They could take down a shark. Also, octopi. They flip a wing of the shark, and once you flip a shark and put it upside down, that’s it. They’re immobilized. Sharks are so bad, [but] you just flip them over [or] punch them in the nose.” NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

A new look for a local landmark Housing. The restaurant might be gone, but the housing in the old Locke-Ober building is ready for new people.

Many know the cobblestone cul-de-sac of Winter Place as the home of one of Boston’s most famous eateries: LockeOber, which closed in 2012 after serving Boston’s movers and shakers for 140 years, but it will soon have a new reputation: as

the site of six luxury condos. Set above the ground floor restaurant space (soon to be filled), the condos of Winter Place Residences are spread through the interconnected six buildings that held LockeOber’s private dining rooms and stores. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places, so development has resulted in each home having a different configuration. They’ve all been finished in a different style, from neo-classical with ornate moldings to loftlike with cathedral ceilings.

The condos also have access to a roof deck, naturally, but if you do end up moving in, see if you can figure out what restaurant is going in there, and let us know. / MERIDIAN REALTY GROUP By the numbers

The units are strikingly spacious, offering space from 2,200 square feet to 3,400 square feet, with private elevator access. Ranging from $1.75 million to $3 million, deluxe trappings

include steam showers, Jacuzzi tubs and Wolf gas ranges. One unusual facet? There’s no lobby. “You don’t see a lobby, you just jump on the elevator and head home,” says Keith Shirley, a principle at Winter Place Residences’ listing agents, Meridian Realty Group. “The building has a warm feeling, but the homes have great open space to entertain or relax in. ... Tiffany Threadgould lives a DIY life. The Chief Design Junkie at TerraCycle, an international waste management company headquartered in Trenton, New Jersey, grew up recycling. So when it came time to furnish her post-college New York City apartment on the cheap, upcycling was a natural next step. “I was just taking cast-offs from the street and making things from found objects,” Threadgould says. “It wasn’t really environmental — it was more about cost.” She carried the same philosophy into her job at TerraCycle and the home she later bought in Philadelphia, which she shares with an upcycled pet, rescue dog Tia. 1

Choose your door. The best way to find an old door is by asking neighbors or friends or even looking in your own basement. Paint it and let it dry. If you’re using acrylic house paint, then coat with a layer of shellac after the paint is dry.

2

Attach the table legs to the four corners on the bottom side of the door. If you’re using a hollow door, make sure the legs come to the edge, to ensure that the screws are fully secured.

3

Flip your table over. Add glass, if you’d like. If you have beveled panels, measure the panels and subtract a quarter-inch from your measurements. Get your glass cut at your local hardware or framing store or online. If the bevel is more than a

“The pencil skirt with a slit has always been a very sexy piece for me,” Joseph Altuzarra told us just before his buzzy collection hit Target shelves. Lucky for us, the Paris-born designer didn’t shy away from including his signature sizzle in the line he created for the family-friendly retailer. He even dabbled in lingerie for the first time. The 50-piece collection, which debuted on Sunday, seamlessly mixes vamp with office attire. Pencil skirts and dresses with eyebrow-raising slits are paired with banker shirts or demure pussy-bow blouses. Harness belts add authority to bohemian flounce, and python prints and moody black set the tone: This woman means business. Now the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year, who cut his teeth at Marc Jacobs and Givenchy, is bringing this sexy sway to the masses. Someone has to balance out all the normcore, right? Congratulations on your Target line! The collection amazingly evokes both an executive and a woman going on a hot date. How is that? Thank you. When designing this collection, we kept in mind the Altuzarra woman: A woman who is confident, empowered and sophisticated. She wants to feel sexy and seductive, no matter the occasion. She has a high appreciation for quality

tailoring and considered design, and wants to wear this clothing whether she’s at work or going out at night.

the best feedback on? The trench coat with peplum back has fit every woman who tries it on perfectly.

You always describe your clothes as being for a woman, not a girl. What do you dislike about the way girls dress these days? For me, what is the most interesting is the mentality and mindset of somebody — so it’s not necessarily about age specifically, but more about frame of mind. Women tend to have a different sense of maturity and confidence, which is what I look for and keep in mind with my designs.

What’s the most fun thing you’ve done this summer? Planning for my wedding. What are your thoughts on normcore? We went through an era of runway clothing that might have been disconnected to women’s everyday lives, and it is refreshing that the runway and reality seem to now be dovetailing.

A robot that can move in any direction immediately is useful for getting around tight spaces and for chasing (or fleeing). No matter how fast an R/C car is, there’s no way it can catch something that can instantly go in any direction, even sideways. Regular car-style robots can’t drive sideways, but omniwheel robots can. An omniwheel is a wheel with a tread made up of a bunch of little rollers. They’re used commercially for things such as transfer tables on production lines, and this means they’re cheap and reliable. In this project, you’ll use them to build a Kiwi drive robot platform — a three-omniwheel vehicle that can travel in any direction. It’s mesmerizing to watch, and it can even rotate while traveling, so it’s great for turret-type applications, too. Omniwheels can move at 90 degrees to their axis, so you

can mount them facing different directions on your vehicle and use a bit of math to still go in a straight line. Like most things in engineering, there are some trade-offs, which is why we don’t all drive omniwheel cars. They’re slower, sensitive to dust, can handle less load — only a few pounds for the wheels we’re using — and they’re less efficient. But in tight spaces, they’re the right

choice and a lot of fun. To see all the steps to make this robot, go to makezine .com. —The 2014 World Maker Faire will be held at New York Hall of Science on Sept. 20 and 21. Go to www.makerfaire.com for more info.

been done for centuries, but the effect of sunshine has been unclear because, along with changes in sunlight, new seasons bring temperature changes and other factors that may influence suicide risk.

Scientists have found a link between sunlight and suicide rates, but not in the way you’d expect. As summer winds down, concern turns to seasonal affective disorder, in which too little sun can bring on depression. But data shows that in springtime, as days get longer again and sunshine returns, the suicide rate peaks. Studies on seasonal variations among suicides have

A team of scientists, led by Dr. Matthaeus Willeit from the University of Vienna, discovered a correlation: Suicide risk went up with the amount of sunshine over a period of 10 days. However, it also decreased with increasing sun exposure between 14 and 60 days. Sunlight, they suggest, may increase the risk of suicide over a short period but actually protect against it over a longer period of time.

Lower impulse control “Light has an influence on serotonin, and serotonin has an influence on mood and suicidality,” Willeit says. Antidepressants that boost the body’s serotonin levels have been known to affect impulsivity first, then mood later on. That early effect on impulsivity may explain the increased suicide risk over a short period of time, and the delayed effect on mood may explain the lower risk over a longer time span.

Don’t avoid the sun People shouldn’t keep out of the sun, though, says Willeit. Instead, doctors should consider adding sunshine to

People always tend to think of it in either biological or social terms, but there is no single cause. It’s a bunch of risk factors that you have.”

Methodology

Three decades of data Willeit and his team took a closer look at the role of sunshine by using information on 69,462 suicides that occurred in Austria between January 1970 and May 2010. That information was then matched to data collected from 86 weather stations that recorded the hours of sunshine per day.

Changes in your vision such as difficulty in driving, halos around lights or even the need for reading glasses could mean your vision is being affected by cataracts. It’s important to know you have options. At New England Eye Center, we now offer the option of laser cataract surgery with the Catalys® Precision Laser System. From our all-laser, bladeless LASIK procedure – to exciting developments like our Visian Implantable lens - our commitment to leading edge technology is surpassed only by our dedication to personalized patient care. Patients of New England Eye Center find confidence in knowing we offer experience you can trust and technology you can rely on. NASA-Approved LASIK - Our all-laser, bladeless LASIK at New England Eye Center has greatly improved results and helped take the fear out of having LASIK. The vast majority of our LASIK and PRK patients now achieve 20/20 vision at distance without glasses or contact lenses. Our method of LASIK is the same type approved for NASA astronauts and military pilots. Implantable Contact Lens - New England Eye Center is among a select group of practices in the country offering patients the benefits of the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL). Unlike LASIK, the Visian corrects vision by inserting a delicate intraocular lens-like device atop the eye’s natural lens, which is why the Visian is also referred to as the ‘Implantable Contact Lens.’ All of the refractive surgeons at New England Eye Center are qualified and experienced in performing this brief outpatient procedure to insert the Visian ICL. Because no corneal or other tissue is removed in the Visian ICL procedure, visual recovery is extremely rapid and the ICL can potentially be replaced if the eye’s focus changes over time. Refractive Lens Exchange - If you’re frustrated with reading glasses and bifocals, our refractive specialists perform a procedure known as Refractive Lens Exchange. By replacing your eye’s aging natural lens with a Intraocular Lens Implant customized specifically for your visual needs - and your lifestyle - allowing you to see better, look younger and never have to worry about developing cataracts! Laser Cataract Surgery - For seniors experiencing changes in their vision – or who have been diagnosed with a cataract – New England Eye Center is turning the dream of Laser Cataract Surgery into reality. We are currently among only the top 3% of practices in the country to offer patients the added precision and accuracy of Laser Cataract Surgery using OptiMedica® Catalys™ Precision Laser System. This year, take your vision to the NEXT LEVEL by giving yourself or a loved one the Gift of Sight. Now that’s a Gift that keeps on Giving. A blessed New Year from the surgeons and staff of New England Eye Center.

Rice is a violent Saddam player in a helped West, violent sport not Russia

I was riding the M train this morning reading Metro when suddenly, I passed out. People around me were so kind to take me to a seat and they even called an ambulance for me. I really wanted thank everyone who happened to be there. Also, a big apology for making everyone late for work. YUMI

Re: ‘Men can be victims, too’ (Metro, Sept. 15) Letter writer Byron Watson thinks Ray Rice’s use of force is “debatable.” It is not debatable that the woman was knocked unconscious and dragged several feet. But then, I’m not a football fan, so I don’t feel the need to apologize for the actions of my source of entertainment.

FUJISAWA, NEW YORK

BRIAN MURRELL, VIA EMAIL

Re: ‘Doing nothing will embolden the powers behind ISIS’ (Metro, Sept. 15) We have to be grateful that letter writer Sean O’Rourke is not one of the shapers of our foreign policy. He states that the ISIS people “are the alumni of Saddam Hussein’s Baath Party, who faithfully served the Soviet Union for years.” For decades now, the overarching conflict in the Arab world has

been the one between secular nationalists and fundamentalist Islamists. Saddam and the Baath Party were strictly secular nationalist. One of the first things Saddam did when he rose to power was order the execution of 3,000 communist sympathizers in 1978. Why? He wanted to ingratiate himself with the West. PASQUALE G. NFL power rankings | by Matt Burke No. 1

No. 3

Denver is a weak No. 1. The Broncos scored just three points in the second half Sunday at home against the mediocre Chiefs. Against a better team, they’d be 1-1 right now. Guessing that the Broncos and Seahawks will flip-flop positions here next week as there is a Super Bowl rematch in Seattle this Sunday.

No. 2

No. 11

No. 15

Bengals (2-0)

Chargers (1-1)

Dolphins (1-1)

Jets (1-1)

The Bengals should head into their Week 4 bye with an unblemished record as they face Tennessee Sunday. Highly unlikely that Jake Locker has success against a team that has allowed just 26 points in 2014.

San Diego won’t be able to count on Antonio Gates for three touchdowns week-in and week-out, but no fear. Fellow tight end Ladarius Green is frothing at the mouth to get involved.

The Miami defense once again did its job in Week 2. The unit allowed just one touchdown to the Bills. But the Dolphins offense will need to improve dramatically if this team wants to be taken seriously.

Rex Kotite, I mean Rex Coslet, I mean Bruce Ryan ... Rex Ryan needs to get control of his coaching staff! There is little margin for error for the Jets given the talent level. They host Chicago this weekend.

No. 4

Broncos (2-0)

No. 7

No. 12

Panthers (2-0)

Bills (2-0)

Bears (1-1)

Falcons (1-1)

Only two teams have allowed less points through two games than the stingy Bengals. One is the Panthers, having given up just 21 points. If they can beat a well-rested Steelers team Sunday, look out.

Who had Bills vs. Chargers as the marquee matchup of Week 3 before the season began? The Bills look like they have a Top 5 defense and Sammy Watkins ripped off his first 100yard receiving day Sunday.

In the fourth, on the road, against a top-notch defense, Jay Cutler and the Bears put 21 points on the board. Again — 21 points! Cutler had a strange stat line with 176 passing yards, but four touchdowns.

Now that we know the Saints are capable of losing to the Browns, was the Falcons’ Week 1 victory over New Orleans really that impressive? Matt Ryan took a huge step back in Week 2.

No. 16

Patriots (1-1)

Ravens (1-1)

Steelers (1-1)

We said last week that they’d have to play the full 60 minutes to beat Andrew Luck and the Colts, but this Philly team apparently thrives by living on the edge. Another double-digit, monster comeback.

Last week, we wanted the head of D-coordinator Matt Patricia. This week, we’ll give credit where credit is due. The secondary, in particular, looked phenomenal in the road win over Minnesota.

The tight end position is said to be dead, but the Ravens might have two of the best in the league. Dennis Pitta remains, and people forgot how valuable Owen Daniels is in a Gary Kubiak offense.

Pittsburgh hung around against the Ravens in that Thursday game, as even after Baltimore’s final touchdown it was down by just 11 points. Three Justin Tucker field goals made it look like a blowout.

No. 10

No. 14

No. 18

Seahawks (1-1)

Cardinals (2-0)

Packers (1-1)

49ers (1-1)

Texans (2-0)

There’s no shame in losing to the Chargers this season, it seems. San Diego looks legit. But maybe, just maybe, the Legion of Boom is a tad overrated. Philip Rivers had a rating of 124. 2 Sunday against the vaunted defense.

Arizona has a Week 4 bye, but this is probably as high as they’ll be in the rankings for a while. Arizona will face a PO’d 49ers team this Sunday and they’ll be in Denver in Week 5. Plus Carson Palmer’s nerve injury looks somewhat serious.

Had it not been for Marty Mornhinweg being Marty Mornhinweg, Green Bay could very well be 0-2 right now. A 400-yard receiving day by Jordy Nelson could come later this season, but it wouldn’t matter because of that horrid defense.

Colin Kaepernick tossed three interceptions against the Bears and was sacked four times. We’ll find out a ton about this team Sunday in Arizona. Was last Sunday night’s gag job a fluke? Or are they closer to the team that crushed Dallas?

Ryan Fitzpatrick was efficient as can be, registering a 129.1 rating. Arian Foster ran for 138 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries. The Houston defense shut out the Raiders for the first three quarters. Momentum is building.

NFL. Pressure on Vikings to sit Peterson increasing The pressure is mounting for the Vikings to do an about-face after they reinstated Adrian Peterson on Monday. Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton said Tuesday that he believes the Vikings made a huge mistake by not suspending Peterson, who is facing child abuse charges, indefinitely. “Whipping a child to the extent of visible wounds, as has been alleged, should not be tolerated in our state,” Dayton told the Associated Press. Sponsors grow angry with NFL Major sponsors are unhappy with the NFL in the wake of abuse issues that are gaining great attention worldwide. A representative for Bud Light, the official beer of the NFL, told ESPN that it is “increasingly concerned.” “We are not yet satisfied with the league’s handling of behaviors that so clearly go against our own company culture and moral code,” a statement from AnheuserBusch, via ESPN, read. METRO

MLS. Revolution getting hot as playoffs get closer The Revolution are on fire, having won five games in a row, and are currently in third place in the Eastern Conference with a 13-12-3 (42 points) record. New England will look to further boost its chances at landing in this year’s MLS playoffs when it takes on the Crew in Columbus this weekend (7:30 p.m., CSNNE). The Revs downed Montreal, 2-1, last weekend, thanks to a game-winning goal by Lee Nguyen. METRO

‘Money’ not much of a tipper Athletes have not been kind to waitresses of late. A week after Eagles running back LeSean McCoy was busted for leaving a 20 cent tip at a restaurant, boxer Floyd Mayweather decided not to tip at all at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas on Sunday. TMZ Sports reported that Mayweather, hours after earning a cool $32 million in a win over Marcos Maidana, racked up a $23,000 bill with approximately 150 of his closest friends. The hotel comped Mayweather for the service but the waitress that served the group for hours claims she never saw a penny from “Money” Mayweather and Co.
