Reason unclear in removal of Sex Offender board execs Massachusetts. Two top executives were suddenly and inexplicably dismissed from their duties. Questions linger following the sudden dismissal on Wednesday of two top executives heading up the Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry, as state officials declined to give a reason for the oustings. Saundra Edwards was relieved of duty after seven years as board chairwoman, and Executive Director Jeanne Holmes was placed on administrative leave. When asked why the women were let go, Executive Office of Public Safety and Se-

curity Spokesman Terrel Harris said, “the [Sex Offender Registry Board’s] decision is considered a personnel matter and we’ll have no further comment.” Neither Edwards nor Holmes responded to requests for comment on the matter. Public Safety and Security Secretary Andrea Cabral announced in a press release issued Wednesday that Anne Conners, an investigator for the Department of Early Education and Care, will replace Edwards. Kevin Hayden, the board’s general counsel, will serve as its interim executive director, Cabral said. Gov. Deval Patrick’s office did not respond to a request for comments on the dismissal of Edwards and Holmes, though Cabral touted the

achievements of their replacements. “[Conners] knows and understands the complexities of the criminal justice system as well as the policies and regulations related to [Sex Offender Registry Information],” said Cabral. “In the course of investigating a number of highprofile cases, [Conners] has worked closely with the [board], local law enforce-

ments agencies, DCF and the District Attorneys’ Offices for many years. She will hit the ground running.” Gov. Deval Patrick appointed Edwards to board chairwoman in 2007. She previously worked as a prosecutor for the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office. He hired Holmes shortly after. Conners will hire a permanent replacement for Holmes, according to Cabral.

The Sex Offender Registry maintains a database of convicted sex offenders and classifies each one by the danger they potentially pose to the public. •

The goal of the registry, according to its website, is to “educate the public and to prevent further victimization.”

There were 11,307 sex offenders in Massachusetts in 2013, according to the most recent data provided by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

With the ink barely dry on the Everett casino approval, an East Boston-based coalition of urban planners is already chiming in about the future of Suffolk Downs. It’s a future that is shrouded in doubt and gloom now that there will be no casino coming to the 161-acre site that straddles the Revere-Eastie line and is home to an historic horse track. Earlier this week, Suffolk Downs indicated the track will be closing down now that there is no casino to pull the operation out of the red. The East Boston group, which is spearheaded by former state Transportation Secretary James Aloisi and includes various community stakeholders, unrolled a “vision statement” on Wednesday

that says the site is ripe for a mix of housing and commercial development. It calls for green redevelopment, noting the presence of an international airport, three tunnels and major highway in the area. The group contends the site, with its Blue Line access and proximity to Logan, downtown and the Innovation District in South Boston, offers “a wealth of development possibilities beyond a casino.” Any development, according to the group, should be rooted in sustainable job creation and offer a broad spectrum of jobs, something a casino would not do. The proposed Suffolk Downs casino was never very popular in Eastie. Last fall,

President Barack Obama vowed on Wednesday the United States will not fight another ground war in Iraq, seeking to reassure Americans about the level of U.S. involvement after a top general suggested combat troops could be deployed against Islamic State forces. Obama stressed during a speech at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa that airstrikes would be the central U.S. contribution to the fight against Islamic State, along with coordinating a coalition that he said now includes more than 40 countries.

FILM

Dan Stevens bids adieu to Cousin Matthew Interview. The former “Downton Abbey” star shows his range in “A Walk Among the Tombstones” and “The Guest.” Dan Stevens wanted a change, and he certainly got one. After

quickly developing a devoted fan base as Matthew Crawley on “Downton Abbey,” the actor was eager to shake things up. This week finds him as a vet with a deadly secret in the madcap action thriller “The Guest” (opening in limited release) and a troubled drug kingpin alongside Liam Neeson in “A Walk Among the Tombstones” — so yeah, pretty different.

‘Tombstones’ is pretty dark, while The Guest’ is lighter. When I sat down with [“The Guest” director] Adam [Wingard], it was very quickly established that we had the same twisted sense of humor, but also the same desire to entertain. As soon as we realized that we both really passionately loved the movie “Big Trouble in Little China,” we knew we were off to a good start.

A classic, to be sure. One of the many things we like about that film is the amount of fun Kurt Russell looks like he’s having. We were looking to capture some of that passion and enthusiasm. Growing up in England, we were steeped in American action thrillers and horror movies, and it’s a kind of film that they don’t really make in England. There’s a nod to it in Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s film “Hot Fuzz,” where they acknowledge that as Brit fanboys we don’t get to make those kinds of movies. Something happened in the last 10 years or so where everyone decided actions movies had to be serious. Right. It’s interesting to watch these cinematic shifts in terms of how we approach things like violence. Even the Bond films have lost one or two of their great quips and oneliners. It seems like they managed to sneak some of that back in with ‘Skyfall.’ It did, it did. I was very pleased to see Albert Finney say, “Welcome to Scotland” with a shotgun in his hands. That was bloody great. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

Back to the ‘Abbey’ You mentioned you were looking for things that are different from what you’ve done, and these two roles are pretty far from Cousin Matthew on ‘Downton Abbey.’ It’s easy to fall into one track of work — especially in England where we make a lot of costume dramas. So inevitably, as an actor, it’s there that you end up in a lot of costume dramas. It does take an active push to step outside of that comfort zone and try something a little bit wild and different.

Did you feel like there was a kind of shadow cast by that character that you had to try to get out from under? Well, not really. I hope people will watch both these movies and not see a trace of him. That’s not to put that character down at all, it’s just that was a character on a very particular TV show, and these are roles in very different movies. When you are in people’s living rooms every Sunday night, it’s a different relationship that you have with your audience. Actually having it piped into your living room TV on a regular basis, and that real kind of institutional feel of Sunday night TV, it’s a different relationship.

“I feel 100 percent complete,” says Andreja Pejic. “It’s about proving my position in the industry and speaking out for equal rights in fashion for transgender models, because it doesn’t exist right now.” It’s a socially charged mission statement that you wouldn’t typically expect to hear from a model. However, there’s nothing typical about Andreja Pejic. Her white blonde hair, full lips and high cheekbones all exemplify the checklist of model attributes. But it’s the fact that she has just under-

of the reasons for coming out,” she explains. It’s an incredibly brave deci-

sion to make, considering that there is still antipathy targeted at the transgender community. There’s also the matter of her very successful career as an androgynous male model for fashion houses such as Jean Paul Gaultier and Marc Jacobs. Her agents warned that transitioning would destroy her career. That, however, didn’t sway Pejic’s decision. “I’m very proud of my career, but it got to a point where I needed to complete my dream and feel comfortable in my body. How a hot cup of coffee can help you fall in love Human nature. A behavioral expert tells us how daters can tip the scales in their favor.

A warm drink and a delicious dessert can be more important than you realize. / WAVEBREAK MEDIA

Picture your idea of a nice first date. Is it dinner and a movie? A visit to an interesting museum exhibit? Instead, an expert on human behavior suggests you get a hot cup of coffee and maybe a freshly made dessert. “If you’re going on a date, you want the other person to think you are warm,” says Thalma Lobel, a professor of psychology at Tel Aviv University and author of the book “Sensation: The New Science of Physical Intelligence.” She notes that the environment around us has more of an im-

pact on human behavior than we realize. We asked Lobel for some scientifically proven dating tips for singles.

Visit a bakery People tend to love the aroma of freshly baked bread or pastries and react accordingly. “I suggest maybe having dessert in a bakery after dinner,” she advises. There’s even an added bonus: Pleasant scents are said to help minimize awkward situations.

Add a touch of red to your wardrobe “The movie industry has known for years that using red lipstick or a red dress signals sexuality,” notes Lobel. You don’t need to deck yourself out in red from head to toe. Something as simple as adding a red scarf or some

Look around

Be aware of the impact of your surroundings “The whole idea of the book is to examine how our physical sensations influence our lives,” says Lobel. “The temperature of the things we touch, the textures, the colors. All of these affect the way we perceive the other person.” A famous study showed that people holding hot cups of coffee in their hands tended to think more fondly of those they were meeting with because of the power of holding something warm, even for just a moment. While warm drinks inspire friendly feelings in people, an iced coffee or soda can literally put a chill on your evening, Lobel says.

red accessories should do the trick.

Sit in comfy seats Don’t forget the impact of soothing textures when picking a place. “If you touch something soft, you actually feel softer toward the other person,” says Lobel.

Use a bit of caution Of course, Lobel points out, red lipstick or a really delicious latte isn’t going make a relationship that was never meant to be develop into a lifelong commitment. But the right environment could make a tiny yet crucial difference that takes a budding romance to the next level. “It might just tip the scale,” Lobel says.

Bonus question

Some felines seem to struggle with a cat flap on the door, so could this food dispenser not be a whisker too advanced for some of our pets? We did user testing. We had around 30 cats and they were all — even the shy participants — able to use it by the second day.

Dog tested. Dog approved.™

A sensor on Bistro will make sure none of your cats are eating your other cats’ portions. / INDIEGOGO

Fat cats? Not with this contraption Feline friends. Bistro uses state-of-the-art technology to keep your buddy fighting fit. Facial recognition technology could make greedy fat cats a thing of the past. Bistro, a new food dispenser masterminded by Taiwanese company 42Ark, monitors and informs owners as to the eating habits of their feline friends. A built-in camera at the front of the gadget identifies your pet, while weight sensors located underneath the animal and bowl calculate the exact quantity of food intake. The information is then sent via home Wi-Fi to a smartphone app, where owners can check out their cat’s diet history, get a health analysis report and even watch their pet in real time. The brain behind

Bistro Mu-Chi Sung explains how his calorie-cutting device — funded through crowdsourcing platform Indiegogo — will cull the rise in cat obesity. This all sounds very Big Brother (beware the hand that feeds you). How did you come up with the idea for the device? The whole thing started when I found my cat, Momo, who had developed pancreatic cancer, lying paralyzed on the floor. For a long time, I was putting food and water in her bowl but had no idea whether she was eating it properly. It wasn’t until I started hand-feeding her that I realized that she still had an appetite. It turns out that my other cats had been eating Momo’s food. If I had noticed as soon as she had stopped eating, then she needn’t have experienced any pain.

So are all your cats using the Bistro now? Not right now because there is only one working prototype in our office. It sounds a bit like a fitness band for a cat. Is it not a bit over-the-top? We all need to measure and quantify our lives. It’s lifelogging for your cat in terms of weight, appetite, hydration and ultimately wellbeing. Isn’t it possible that message alerts about your cat’s health might cause unnecessary paranoia? I don’t think it would cause concern. You would only see the update warning if there is a sudden change in your cat’s behavior. EDWARD THOMPSON @MetroBOS letters@metro.us

Clean Bandit may identify themselves as an electronic chamber music quartet, but these Brits who gave us the infectious single, “New Eyes,” aren’t as stodgy as their genre of choice might imply. “We all shout some Spice Girl lyrics before we go onstage,” says violin player Milan Neil Amin-Smith, during a chat backstage at Latitude festival in Suffolk, England. These University of Cambridge graduates — Grace Chatto (cello and vocals), brothers Jack (bass guitar and keyboard) and Luke Patterson (drums) and Amin-Smith — aren’t exactly ones for convention. Their music, which is a mix of Disclosure-style house and garage with classical flourishes of orchestral strings, might sound as opiniondividing as chilli chocolate, but it’s in fact proving to be a floor-filler. So apparently you met porn star Ron Jeremy recently in the U.S. What kind of parties are you attending these days? I have to be honest with you and say I’m the only one who went to bed before we met him. But it came about because Grace peeled off from the group and went to a nightclub on her own in L.A. I don’t know what took her, but she’s quite headstrong. Is she the party person of the band? Not particularly, but she’s by far the bravest and by far the most confident. She ended up

It’s weird, nasally and childlike, but it’s also a bluesy, world-weary tenor. It doesn’t feel like a natural voice, but more like a character he’s doing, and it enhances the group’s gospellike, Americana vibe, as if these are songs by someone else, from some other era.

Speaking of making movies, Clean Bandit produces their own dangerous DIY music videos. Any close calls? “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner plays like a rerun of a 1960s sitcom. You’ll laugh a lot, spend a few minutes thinking about how formulaic it was and tell your friends little, if anything, about the experience. Aside from some new dialogue about boxing legend Joe Louis, nothing much is fresh about Todd Kreidler’s stage adaptation of the 1967 film. to Christian Coulson (the aforementioned portrayer of a young Voldemort), “Glee” dad Mike O’Malley will be there, as well as Neal McDonough, who you probably saw in “Minority Report” or “Captain America.” Both are Boston natives. According to Maler, all of the actors were pretty excited to get the chance to perform at Fenway. O’Malley can be seen performing in parts of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” “As soon as this idea of a performance at Fenway Park happened, he was right on board,” says Maler. With all the actors coming in from different places, some of the scenes won’t actually be blocked out until Thursday night and Friday afternoon before the show. When asked how it will all come together in time, Maler laughs and says, “You know, it’s an interesting question, and I will be able to tell you in full on Saturday morning, after it’s over.” LISA WEIDENFELD

I hope both other abused men and abused women can find appropriate help to focus on healing themselves also. While anger may be legitimate, how it’s processed is important and is key to my healing. Blame is not helpful for me. Also, none of us benefit when a person is tried in the media. Rules of evidence, challenging of witnesses and all the rules of court are necessary for justice to work. Only the understanding that sick is sick, and the offering of treatment, can make things better. Societal rage is not conducive to victims becoming survivors. It’s up to all parties involved in the abuse to seek recovery and become survivors.

REBOUNDING FROM THE WEEK 2 INJURY BUFFET If you made it to Week 3 without losing any players to injury, suspension or criminal proceedings, you’re well ahead of the game. The rest of us are running around like chickens with our heads cut off, trying to keep up with one of the craziest months in NFL history. The most actionable changes this week are due to running back injuries. Here’s what to expect from three new starters:

NFL matchups Fire up these borderline players in Week 3. •

Stevan Ridley, RB, Patriots — A home game against the Triple-A Raiders is an obvious Ridley smash and pound spot. Bad news for Shane Vereen owners.

Jared Cook, TE, Rams — In Week 1, Dallas got hit for two touchdowns by 49ers tight end Vernon Davis. In Week 2, Tennessee tight end Delanie Walker gave them an impressive 10-142-1 line.

Jeremy Hill, RB, Bengals — A soft Titans front will leave enough room for both Hill and Giovani Bernard to eat on Sunday — especially if A.J. Green (toe) sits.

Swimming in the Knile This version of the Andy Reid offense is the most running back dependent scheme in the league — and it’s not going to change now that Jamaal Charles is sidelined by an ankle injury. In the three games Charles has missed time in over the last two seasons, Knile Davis is averaging 27.3 touches per day and has scored six touchdowns. He has to face a very good Dolphins run defense this Sunday, but we know the workload is going to be there.

Donald Brown is expected to see an increased workload with Ryan Mathews banged up. / GETTY IMAGES

Chris Ivory 2.0 When watching Khiry Robinson run, you can’t help but think of the violent tackle-breaking style Chris Ivory used to display in New Orleans. The difference between the two is that Robinson is a plus in the pass game. Now that Mark

Ingram (hand) is out at least a month, Robinson is going to form a two-headed monster with Pierre Thomas and pick up the goal-line work that led to three Ingram touch-

NFL. Patriots saying they don’t take Raiders lightly The Patriots are favored by a whopping 14 1/2 points over the 0-2 Raiders this Sunday (1 p.m., CBS), according to Bovada. Of course, that means that New England head coach Bill Belichick is acting as though Bo Jackson, Ken Stabler and Howie Long are coming to Foxboro this weekend. “I think this team looks like the big, fast team that the Raiders have been known for,” Bill Belichick said. METRO

downs this season. With 10-14 touches weekly in this explosive Saints offense, the former UDFA is a top-30 fantasy running back for the next month. MLB

Red Sox excited about Castillo Rusney Castillo made his much anticipated Red Sox debut last night in Pittsburgh, batting seventh and playing center field, and Boston manager John Farrell is more than ready to unleash the Cuban star. “He’s an electric player with a lot of skills. He’s explosive, quick-twitch,” Farrell told WEEI. “We’re looking forward to seeing him in this park.” METRO

The Chargers gave Donald Brown a $10.5 million contract this offseason with this moment in mind. Ryan Mathews (knee) is out 4-5 weeks and this run-based attack needs a workhorse. Look for Danny Woodhead to mostly stay in his passing back role, leaving Brown to handle the majority of early-down and goal-line work. The guy Peyton Manning made famous with the “Damn it, Donald” line will have plenty of flex appeal thanks to a very soft upcoming schedule.

Pickups of the week Here are the best adds for Week 3: •

Chargers D/ST: Will face Bills, Jags, Jets, Raiders and Chiefs over the next five weeks.

Brian Quick, WR, Rams: Has 14 catches on 18 targets through two weeks.

Kirk Cousins, QB, Redskins: His uneven 2013 performances were in the Mike Shanahan scheme built for Robert Griffin.

MLB. Umpire suspended after Papelbon incident Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon was suspended seven games by MLB for making an obscene gesture toward fans and for bumping umpire Joe West. But West is also getting some share of the blame from the ugly incident in Philly. West was suspended one game without pay for initiating contact with Papelbon, grabbing his jersey, during a heated argument. METRO

Winston punished for outburst Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston will sit out the first half of this Saturday’s game against Clemson after he allegedly stood on a table near the school’s student union and shouted an obscene sexual phrase. Winston was heard shouting the popular Internet phrase by dozens of FSU students. Winston was investigated in 2013 for sexual assault, but was not charged, and also found himself in trouble earlier this year for stealing $32 worth of crab legs from a grocery store.
