MTA changes for Sunday

Activists gear up for Climate March Manhattan. The March on Sunday before the U.N. Climate Summit is expected to be the largest in history. If all goes according to plan, more than 100,000 people will gather near Central Park West on Sunday morning and march down through midtown to raise awareness for climate change. The People’s Climate March is set two days ahead of the start of the United Nations’ Climate Summit, which will bring all U.N. member states to New York in hopes of creat-

ing a “global agreement by 2015 that limits the world to a less than 2 degree Celsius rise in global temperature,” according to the summit website. “The biggest message is that it [climate] really affects everyone,” said Lindsay Meiman, a member of the People’s Climate March media team. Meiman said the march is expected to be the largest climate rally yet. The march starts Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at Central Park West between 65th and 86th streets. Over the next few days, activists will make phone calls and hand out fliers in the subway to increase turnout, Meiman said. “This is a really historic movement, I keep telling

people they’ll tell their grandchildren they were at the march,” said Elana Sulakshana, 19, who attends Columbia University. Sulakshana is a member of Barnard Columbia Divest for Climate Justice, a group working in hopes of separating the university’s endowment from fossil fuel investments. Arnivan Chatterjee, 37, a data strategist from San Francisco traveled here to take part in the event. Chatterjee is a member

of Brown and Green: South Asian Americans for Climate Justice, and said the groups’ members, from countries including India, Pakistan and Nepal, have family who grew up in a “climate ground zero.” “For us, it’s a huge opportunity to take action against dirty fossil fuel companies,” Chatterjee said. The MTA has announced service changes ahead of Sunday’s People’s Climate March, which will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Riders using the following buses should anticipate delays or detours: M5, M7, M10, M11, M12, M20, 34 SBS, M34A SBS, M42, M66, M72, and M104. D trains traveling to the Bronx will run local from 9:30-11:30 a.m. between 59th Street and 125 Street. Additional E train service is available, because the 7 train will be suspended between 74 Street-Broadway and Times Square due to weekend repairs. Stations along Central Park West, 34th Street Penn Station and 34th Street Herald Square might be designated as entrance or exit only to prevent overcrowding, the MTA said. METRO

Bushwick. MayDay community space gives activists new home

A group of activists gather at MayDay’s open house. / MILES DIXON, METRO

A new Bushwick community space offers community activists to meet, create, learn and throw back a few cold ones. MayDay, located 214 Starr Street in Bushwick, is still a work in progress, said Mcnair Scott, one of the founders. The threestory warehouse, which includes an event space, a roof ecostation and co-

working space, will also include a first-floor bar and cafe, Scott said. Scott said one of the main focuses of MayDay is confronting neighborhood issues, such as gentrification, but also providing a space for activists to work together and have “good cross pollination.” MayDay has teamed up with activist groups plan-

ning to walk in Sunday’s People’s Climate March, who are using the space to create posters and floats. “It’s been a great collaboration with them,” Scott said, adding the importance of having someplace to come back to and “decompress” after major events like the climate march.. ID cards come with zoo, museum benefits Manhattan. Mayor de Blasio is trying to entice illegal immigrants to join Municipal ID program. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio offered free access to some of his city’s famed cultural destinations on Thursday in a bid to coax illegal immigrants to join an identification card program aimed at helping them do ordinary things like sign a rental lease. Among the perks offered by the Democratic mayor were free or reduced-price admission to places like the Bronx Zoo, New York City Ballet, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Carnegie Hall for all of next year. There are about 40 types of human papillomavirus (HPV) that may affect an estimated 75% to 80% of males and females in their lifetime. For most, HPV will clear on its own. However, there’s no way to predict who will and won’t clear the virus. For those who don’t clear certain types, HPV could cause cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers in females and anal cancer and genital warts in both males and females. The CDC recommends routine vaccination for boys and girls ages 11 or 12 against HPV-related cancer and diseases. GARDASIL® [Human Papillomavirus Quadrivalent (Types 6, 11, 16, and 18) Vaccine, Recombinant] is the only HPV vaccine that helps protect against 4 types of HPV. In girls and young women ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against 2 types of HPV that cause about 75% of cervical cancer cases, 70% of vaginal cancer cases, and up to 50% of vulvar cancer cases. In males and females ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against about 80% of anal cancer cases and about 90% of genital warts cases.

THE CDC RECOMMENDS ROUTINE VACCINATION OF 11 OR 12 YEAR OLDS AGAINST HPV-RELATED CANCER AND DISEASES. THE TIME TO PROTECT THEM IS BEFORE EXPOSURE TO THE VIRUS.

GARDASIL may not fully protect everyone, nor will it protect against diseases caused by other HPV types or against diseases not caused by HPV. GARDASIL does not prevent all types of cervical cancer, so it’s important for women to continue routine cervical cancer screenings. GARDASIL does not treat cancer or genital warts. GARDASIL is given as 3 injections over 6 months.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION Anyone who is allergic to the ingredients of GARDASIL, including those severely allergic to yeast, should not receive the vaccine. GARDASIL is not for women who are pregnant. The side effects include pain, swelling, itching, bruising, and redness at the injection site, headache, fever, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and fainting. Fainting can happen after getting GARDASIL. Sometimes people who faint can fall and hurt themselves. For this reason, your child’s health care professional may ask your child to sit or lie down for 15 minutes after he or she gets GARDASIL. Some people who faint might shake or become stiff. This may require evaluation or treatment by your child’s health care professional. Only a doctor or health care professional can decide if GARDASIL is right for your son or daughter. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

Arizona Cardinals running back Jonathan Dwyer posted bond and was released from a county jail on Thursday, a day after he was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault in the latest domestic violence case involving a National Football League player. Dwyer was taken into custody on Wednesday hours after two other NFL teams placed players embroiled in domestic

violence cases on leaves of absence amid intensifying criticism from corporate sponsors and politicians of America’s top sports league. Asked by journalists about the allegations involving a 27-year-old woman and their 18-month-old child, which include an accusation that he threw a shoe at the boy, Dwyer said, “I’d never hurt my son. The Cardinals said on Wednesday they had deactivated him from all team activities, “given the serious nature of the allegations. Shortly after that, the woman left Arizona with the child, citing fears for her safety, police said. On Sept. 11, she reported the two alleged incidents to police. REUTERS

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, ordinary Americans could walk into the White House and meet the president — share an RC Cola, a pack of crackers and maybe watch “Dancing with the Stars.” At least I’ve read such things. These days, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. is a fortress where even strolling up to the door will get you face down on the pavement with a boot on your neck. You’d have better success asking Jay Z for a foot rub. To a lesser degree, it’s the same at the Capitol. I know it is a necessary situation, security concerns being what they are. But it is a shame. This comes to mind because Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has been sleeping in a tent lately. Seems he promised indigenous people in his country that each year he would spend a week living among them. He has secure computer and telephone connections, so it’s not like he’s making s’mores at a Cub Scout jamboree, but still, the time involved raises it above a cheap political stunt — and I wish more

of our political leaders would do the same. As the mid-term elections roar up, both major parties are insisting their candidates are, in effect, “normal people, just like you!” Even if we put aside the vexing question of who among us is “normal” (hint: It’s not my cousin Willie.) this claim is almost always patently false. Normal people don’t ride around in motorcades; they take the bus. They don’t fly on private jets; they board budget airlines — if they fly at all. They don’t have $1,000-a-plate dinners; they balance McDonald’s bags on their knees in commuter traffic. I suspect if our top leaders would commit to that kind of life for a few days each year, it would help them understand the new “normal” in America. That might make them think less about political gamesmanship and more about genuine solutions, and all that might help restore the nation’s shattered faith in politics. It will never happen, of course. But it would be nice. Heck, I’d even help pitch their tents.

Calif. gives permits for self-driving cars

®

California issued its first 29 permits this week to three companies to test self-driving cars on public roads, state officials said on Thursday. Google Inc. got permits for testing 25 adapted Toyota Motor Corp. Lexus SUVs, and two permits each went to Daimler AG’s MercedesBenz and Volkswagen AG’s Audi, said Bernard Soriano of the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Soriano said Audi was the first to apply for the permits, followed by Daimler and then Google. All the permits were issued on Tuesday, the first day they were required by California, which has the largest population of any state in the nation. A few other automakers and first-tier automotive suppliers are in the process of filing for the permits, said Soriano on Thursday. Autonomous car testing has been under way in California for several years without the permits, but the state’s legislature has made permits a requirement for them to run on public roads. REUTERS

OMG! New mug is a mighty good way to counter clumsy messes We’ve all knocked a steaming cup of coffee or glass of water over a keyboard or vital document. And that’s why the Mighty Mug with its “supergrip technology” — a powerful air lock vacuum that keeps it safely locked down to a surface — could put an end to clumsy desk-side disasters. But don’t worry, the mug doesn’t require Herculean strength to take a sip, as the vacuum releases when lifted. Inventor Jayme Smaldone tells Metro why this receptacle is the only safe way to sip your drink. Did you spill on many devices before finally getting the design of the Mighty Mug right? Yes, especially after a big spill ruined an important computer of ours. So we started to look at ways to make a better mug and we feel that Mighty Mug accomplishes that. And how does this new technology work?

the smartgrip instantly releases and the mug lifts naturally.

Visit us online at Metro.us/omg for more interviews.

The no-tip Mighty Mug / MIGHTY MUG

Our patented “smartgrip technology” traps air beneath its base to create a powerful air lock. Once picked up by a user,

Will it fall if it’s struck particularly firmly? It can take many knocks. If you intentionally try to knock it over, meaning if you push or punch the mug, it will eventually fall, but when we accidentally knock into something it is only a quick hit. Do you think everyone needs a gadget like this? We have found that people accidentally knocking over their mugs is a universal problem and something people all over the world are interested in finding a solution to. Since many of us have important electronics around, it has become even more important to have a Mighty Mug. It also has a magical element to it, which makes people smile and happy whenever they interact with it. WANISE MARTINEZ, MWN

Sunshine raises risk of suicide Data analysis. Light, like some antidepressants, can lower impulse control.

As summer winds down, concern turns to seasonal affective disorder, in which too little sun can trigger depression. But data shows that it’s in springtime, as days get longer again and sunshine returns, that the suicide rate peaks. Studies on seasonal variations among suicides

have been done for centuries, but the actual effect of sunshine has been unclear because new seasons bring temperature changes and other factors that may influence suicide risk, such as holidays.

What happens on sunny days A team of scientists, led by Dr. Matthaeus Willeit from the University of Vienna, discovered a correlation: Suicide risk goes up with the amount of sunshine over a period of 10 days. However, it also decreases with increasing sun exposure between

“Light has an influence on serotonin, and serotonin has an influence on mood and suicidality,” Willeit says. Antidepressants that boost the body’s levels of serotonin have been known to affect impulsivity first, then mood later on. That early effect on impulsivity may explain the increased suicide risk over a short period of time, and the delayed effect on mood may explain the lower risk over a longer time span.

People shouldn’t keep out of the sun based on the study’s findings, says Willeit. Instead, doctors

Methodology

Three decades of data Willeit and his team took a closer look at the role of sunshine by using information on 69,462 suicides that occurred in Austria between January 1970 and May 2010. That information was then matched to data collected from 86 weather stations that recorded the hours of sunshine per day. should consider adding sunshine to the list of factors that may influence the risk of suicide. “Suicide is complicated and has many risk factors. Facial recognition technology could make greedy fat cats a thing of the past. Bistro, a new food dispenser masterminded by Taiwanese company 42Ark, monitors and informs owners as to the eating habits of their feline friends. A built-in camera at the front of the gadget identifies your pet, while weight sensors located underneath the animal and bowl calculate the exact quantity of food intake. The information is Bonus question

Some felines seem to struggle with a cat flap on the door, so could this food dispenser not be a whisker too advanced for some of our pets? We did user testing. We had around 30 cats and they were all — even the shy participants — able to use it by the second day.

then sent via home Wi-Fi to a smartphone app, where owners can check out their cat’s diet history, get a health analysis report and even watch their pet in real time. The brain behind Bistro Mu-Chi Sung explains how his caloriecutting device — funded through crowd-sourcing platform Indiegogo — will cull the rise in cat obesity. This all sounds very Big Brother (beware the hand that feeds you). How did you come up with the idea for the device? The whole thing started when I found my cat, Momo, who had developed pancreatic cancer, lying paralyzed on the floor. For a long time, I was putting food and water in her bowl but had no idea whether she was eating it properly. It wasn’t until I started hand-feeding her that I realized that she still had an appetite. It turns out that my other cats had been eating Momo’s food.

A sensor on Bistro will make sure none of your cats are eating your other cats’ portions. / INDIEGOGO

If I had noticed as soon as she had stopped eating, then she needn’t have experienced any pain. So are all your cats using the Bistro now? Not yet because there’s only one working prototype. It sounds a bit like a fitness band for a cat. Is it not a little over-the-top? It’s life-logging for your

cat in terms of weight, appetite, hydration and ultimately well-being. Isn’t it possible that message alerts about your cat’s health might cause unnecessary paranoia? I don’t think it would cause concern. You would only see the update warning if there is a sudden change in your cat’s behavior. EDWARD THOMPSON

Exclusive: Backstage with Whole new world. Metro goes behind the scenes for the six-month anniversary of Disney’s latest hit. “Aladdin” opened on Broadway on March 20, making this weekend the six-month anniversary of the latest stage musical from Disney. We spent an evening behind the scenes with Adam Jacobs, the former “Lion King” lead who now stars in “Aladdin.” By the numbers

Here’s what an evening looks like in Adam Jacob’s shoes

Jacobs arrives at the theater after what he describes as “a light dinner,” now toting a medium-size Oren’s Daily Roast cafe au lait with almond milk. He enters through the stage door, located on 41st Street behind the New Amsterdam Theatre, and adds his autograph to the cast’s signin sheet. He greets director/ choreographer Casey Nicolaw, who’s come to see the show. It’s been about a month since the two have seen each other; Nicolaw comes by intermittently to conduct business, check on the show’s progress or schedule brush-up rehearsals for the cast.

In his dressing room, Jacobs does some quick exercise to get the blood flowing, followed by vocal warmups. As he sits to do his makeup, he’s looked down on by pictures of his wife, actress Kelly Jacobs, and their 7-month-old twin boys. It takes Jacobs about 15 minutes to get into his costume. A crucial step is securing his signature red fez, which requires four clips and 12 bobby pins to stay in place: “I want it snug — I do flips, rolls, go upside down,” the actor explains of his stunts in the first act. There’s about 10 minutes set aside for makeup — including Maui Babe Browning Lotion to make it look like he spends his days in the desert.

We watch from the back of the house — behind orchestra seating — as Aladdin first appears onstage during the “Arabian Nights” opening number, led by Tony Award-winning James Monroe Inglehart as the Genie, as well as the rest of the cast. Jacobs is onstage for most of Act I — minus the palace scenes with Jasmine (Courtney Reed), the Sultan (Clifton Davis) and Jafar (Jonathan Freeman, who also voiced the villainous vizier in the original film). The only number he doesn’t join in Act I — out of 11, including the overture — is “These Palace Walls,” a number between Princess Jasmine and her handmaids.

At intermission, Jacobs says he feels good. It’s pretty routine by now, but, “James will throw in some improv, he keeps me on my toes. Iago, Don Darryl Rivera, too — he does little faces. And audience reactions aren’t always the same. When there’s kids, for example, after the magic carpet [Courtney and I] kiss and get ‘Oooooh.’” We talk about his fans of all ages, and how they communicate with him through mail and online, while he shows us a drawer full of the trinkets and fan art he’s collected. We ask about his favorite part of the show. Ultimately, he likes the action scenes in Act I: “It’s like being shot out of a cannon.”

8:30 Intermission is almost over. So what happens now? “Usually Courtney comes in and starts bothering me,” Jacobs jokes. “But we’ll switch it up and go to her.” We head upstairs to the actress’ dressing room, which is fit for a harem. Reed confirms that she and Jacobs like to hang out during intermission: “It’s the only time we ever get to chat,” she says. Although they’re onstage together a few

times, they’re on very different tracks and don’t actually get to say hello or talk during the first half of the show. Reed shows us some of her fan art, which takes up more of her wall than Jacobs’ does — prompting us to ask, which one of you is more popular? They exchange a glance and start laughing. “She is definitely more popular,” admits Jacobs. “She’s a Disney princess!”

“We have fans seeing their first Broadway show, and that’s really special. You also have the Disney super fans, who have really high expectations for ‘Aladdin,’ and they want to make sure it’s as good as the movie. The best compliment I get is ‘you’re even better than the movie’ — especially from those super fans. And you can tell who they are, because they have the phone with the Ariel cover and pins from Disney World and shirts from D23.”

Act II begins with “Prince Ali.” During “A Whole New World,” we’re not allowed backstage because there’s some Disney magic happening with the flying carpet. Afterward, we’re allowed into the wings. Jacobs has his only break in Act II. “High Adventure” is 4.5 minutes. “This is my favorite number to watch,” he confides. He even joins the chorus as Aladdin’s thieving friends break into the palace to rescue him.

Jacobs is about to go back onstage. Right now Aladdin is locked up in the dungeon, with magic handcuffs that “don’t always open when the Genie unlocks them,” he confides, citing that as one of the little “bloopers” that might happen during a show. He checks his appearance in a mirror that’s mounted backstage for this very reason, then goes to get locked into the device by stagehands.

Act II winds toward its climax and happily ever after. Jacobs takes the final bow, before taking one with the cast. Everyone bounds offstage — another successful show concludes. But before Jacobs leaves, he stops outside the stage door to autograph programs and playbills for his fans. Only then does he head home to rest, because tomorrow is a double show day, and soon it’ll be time to do all of this all over again.

Shake your tail feathers Art of the tease. The annual New York Burlesque Festival kicks o this month. When Angie Pontani takes the stage at the New York Burlesque Festival, she’ll stand a foot taller than usual thanks to a towering headdress. Spectacle has been her trade nearly all her life, and her 5-minute routines of pops, drops, bumps, grinds and high kicks reveal both a wellpracticed professional and great enthusiasm for the art of burlesque. “In so many other types of live performance, you are waiting to get cast in a preexisting show,â€? she says. “In burlesque, you control your performance.â€? Next weekend, Pontani shares the spotlight with more than 100 performers from around the globe. Now in its 12th year, the four-day event has grown into a bacchanalia of spinning tassels, live music, international DJs and variety

acts. A nightly bazaar helps fill more home closets with corsets, pasties, hair ornaments, vintage dresses and lingerie. The most challenging acts of the festival may be performed by co-producer Jen Gapay, who created the festival and has produced it each year with Pontani. Gapay’s love of burlesque began at the Lower East Side’s Slipper Room, but more direct inspiration came from New Orleans, where Tease-O-Rama revivals began in 2001. Considering her extensive event planning experience, promoting a festival seemed perfect — as was the addiIf you go

Other awards embrace more exotic themes like “Performer Most Likely to Become a Life Coach or The Khaleesi Award for the performer “Most Likely to Rule the Seven Kingdoms. For Gapay, the magic of burlesque lies in the celebration of the self. “It empowers performers to embrace their bodies as well as their funny personality quirks and anything else that makes them unique, she says. “It entertains and teaches us something at the same time. MIKE DUNPHY @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Rita Wilson joins the fall lineup at Cafe Carlyle Songstress. Rita Wilson brings a mix of old and new to her upcoming gig. As a ticket-taker at the Universal Amphitheater in Hollywood in the ’70s, actress, producer and singer Rita Wilson found musical inspiration in one memorable night with Joni Mitchell. Her career ambition was further stoked when she was cast as Roxie Hart in the musical “Chicago” in 2006. “When I did that,” she recalls, “I literally made a vow to myself that I was going to have music in my life for the rest of my life.” Starting next week, you can catch Wilson onstage at the famed Cafe Carlyle inside the Carlyle Hotel. For two weeks, she performs hour-plus shows five days a week with material from her first album “AM/ FM,” a collection of covers and some original material written with Richard Marx, Kara DioGuardi and Jason Reeves. Backing her is a four-piece band led by guitarist Andrew Doolittle. As with any show at Cafe Carlyle, the room itself becomes an additional member of the band. For Wilson, the unique room also cultivates a special relationship with the audience that’s both thrilling and terrifying. She explains: “When you are performing on your own, you have a much more direct connection.” A large part of the thrill comes from performing new songs. “One I look forward to singing is called ‘Along for the Ride,’ and that’s just a really fun, up-tempo ‘let’s go out and party’ song,” she says. Also joining the party this season are Jeff Goldblum, Molly Ringwald, David “Buster Poindexter” Johansen, Steve Tyrell and husband-and-wife duo John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey. Woody Allen continues to perform Monday nights with the Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band. Whether any of Wilson’s famous friends (or husband Tom Hanks) plan to join her onstage remains to be seen. “It’s possible,” she laughs. “You never know with my crazy friends!” MIKE DUNPHY @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Robert Gober rose to prominence in the mid-1980s with his ready-made creations using everyday objects like sinks, domestic furniture, playpens, beds and doors. In the 1990s, his practice evolved from single works to theatrical room-size environments that utilize his domestic and uncanny sculptures — involving body parts — in rooms overrun by elaborately designed wallpaper. “The Heart Is Not a Metaphor” at MoMA includes 130 works across several mediums, all

Say it ain’t so! After recently celebrating a year of wedded bliss — and showing off a gaudy 17-carat diamond ring to mark the occasion — Avril Lavigne and Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger are reportedly packing it in, according to Us Weekly. “It’s over. He has been going around LA telling people that they are divorcing,” a source says. I’m not really one to judge, but I can’t

Who knew that models could be mean?

Everyone was mean to Kendall Jenner at Fashion Week Kendall Jenner learned that there’s hazing in the fashion world during her New York Fashion Week debut earlier this month. “The other models worked so hard to get a spot on the runway and didn’t think it was fair that she was there. They thought

she was getting special treatment and just weren’t OK with it,” a source tells In Touch, adding that some of the other models “even put out their cigarettes in Kendall’s drink. Models can be cruel, especially with someone new and entitled.”

believe it took her this long to realize he was in Nickelback. I guess sparkly diamonds can only distract a person from the awful truth for so long.

Scientology loses Cruise’s son

As George Clooney’s upcoming Venice wedding to lawyer/activist Amal Alamuddin approaches, new details are leaking. Italian outlet Il Gazzettino reports that the nuptials will take place on Sept. 27. Us Weekly, for its part, claims that Alamuddin’s family will actually be footing the bill.

The Church of Scientology may be down another high-profile member, as Connor Cruise — the 19-year-old aspiring DJ and son of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman — is reportedly distancing himself from the controversial organization and has embarked on a spiritual quest.

Repertory film: Better than streaming Let’s be blunt: Netflix Instant stinks. It rarely has the thing you most want to watch, and instead you constantly settle for something lesser. This fall, be proactive and get your butt out to one of this city’s many thriving, adventurous repertory movie houses. They tend to show the things that are too good for streaming. MATT PRIGGE

Retro Metro (Sept. 26-Oct. 5) There are too many movies shot in New York City to count, but only a handful deal with one of its biggest headaches: the subway system. BAM rounds up a string of those, offering views of the clean distant past (as in the Harold Lloyd film “Speedy”) and the graffiti days of “Saturday Night Fever” and “Style Wars.” You’ll even get to marvel at how, in “The Warriors,” it takes an entire late night to ride from the top of the Bronx down to Coney Island. Movie magic!

Capra (Oct. 10-Oct. 23) At his height, Frank Capra wasn’t just a film director; he was a populist demagogue whose legions hung on his every word and wished him to run for office. Instead he kept making movies, like “Mr. Deed Goes to Town” and “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” that spoke of an idyllic America that could never be. But they were more nuanced than that, and there was more to Capra than these sprightly dramas. Indeed, he only got to “It’s a Wonderful Life” by starting out as one of comedy’s better directors.

Celluloid Dreams (Open run from Sept. 24) Film is almost dead, which is to say actually feeding pieces of film through a projector is becoming a rarity, even among cinephile-appeasing repertory houses. It will all one day be digital. Until then, IFC will be screening films that look better analogue and even scratchy and/ or faded. First up is a film photographed by the recently late Gordon Willis, one of celluloid’s bestest friends. So go watch “Purple Rose of Cairo” and revel in its gorgeously grimy look at the Depression.

New York Film Festival (Sept. 26-Oct. 12) The Toronto International Film Festival was a little lowkey this year, with few major premieres. Turns out NYFF got most of those, scoring the first looks at David Fincher’s “Gone Girl” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Inherent Vice.” The acclaimed “Birdman,” with Michael Keaton, also swings by, as do the latest from Olivier Assayas, Jean-Luc Godard and much more.

Liam Neeson thriller. The Oscar-nominee’s latest flick is among his darkest picks Rather than just another gruff, AARP-set ass-kicker, Liam Neeson’s latest character is Matthew Scudder, a crime novel favorite chronicled in the books of Lawrence Block. both creepy character actor extraordinaire Parks and a giggling Haley Joel Osment. The messiness is intentional and keeps us on edge, though the cynicism says loads about its maker. MATT PRIGGE

The lowdown: Though it gets very, very dark, “Tombstones” isn’t the darkest of the Neeson 2.0 films. That would be “The Grey,” wherein his death wish is only for himself — and the wolves who want him for dinner. But “Tombstones” is his most respectable thriller. Along with an established source, it boasts an esteemed filmmaker (Scott Frank, who wrote “Out of Sight” and directed “The Lookout”). It’s still a routine trash mystery, with inane twists and hard-to-swallow movie detective work, albeit one elevated by the care put into making it and, of course, its star. It’s not clear how much of Block’s novel has been Neesonized, but “Tombstones” takes apparent glee in playing with audience expectations, even sometimes

••••• denying its star’s fan base the hurtin’ they came to see. More than once Neeson’s character talks someone out of getting a Scudder beatdown. There’s an old-school style at play here, and not always for the best. Setting this in 1999 might require Scudder do some actual snooping and not stare at his phone. But it also yields bad Y2K gags and may be responsible for casual homophobia, when we learn the evil kidnappers might be gay. It’s the kind of nudging “well, that explains it” moment done regularly and unthinkingly in a less enlightened age. MATT PRIGGE

Jason Bateman once again plays the straight man trapped inside a dysfunctional family, only this time it’s serious: The patriarch has passed, and his dying wish was that his immediate family spend a week sitting shiva. The lowdown: The dysfunctional family genre is like comfort food: Everyone bickers, there are jokes and then the third act is one gooey mess. “This is Where I Leave You” skips right to the goo. There are jokes, but most of them are left to Adam Driver — as the youngest sibling, basically tasked with doing skewed line readings

While the script orchestrates any manner of genre staples — right on cue, there’s the medical emergency — some of the plot threads retain a messiness that overpowers the corn. It’s a good fight, though: Director Shawn Levy (“Night at the Museum”) never shies from slipping in Michael Giacchino’s uncharacteristically sickening piano score at the slightest whiff of an emotional moment, killing any chance of this being grumpy fun on the order of even a “Home for the Holidays.” MATT PRIGGE

Real-world love advice

DATING

You’re killing your chances of real love Finding the right kind of love can be challenging enough without selfdefeating behaviors, and too many people are their own worst enemy. They repeat bad patterns, pick the wrong people and live in the past. For many, they think they have had many bad relationships. But what they might not realize is that they have had one bad relationship many times. Here are the Top 3 ways you stop yourself from finding the relationship you deserve:

You put your ex on a pedestal After a breakup we sometimes see our exes

What he’s into this week …

Dating in your 30s can be awesome! According to bestselling author Lisa Steadman, “Thirty is the new flirty.” www.lisasteadman.com /dating-in-your-30s

as our perfect matches, convincing ourselves that we won’t find another like them and blaming ourselves for what happened. But even more often, we look past the issues that caused the breakup and remember only the good parts. Both viewpoints can be bad for future relationships for a number of reasons: • You think, “No one will ever be like them.” You compare future romantic interests to the good parts of your past relationship. • You subconsciously stay stagnant in the hopes that he might return and you’ll be back together.

Why do guys go silent after a great first date? Don’t wonder. If they are going to stop communication after a great time, it’s a red flag. www.theproblem ismen.com/rants /firstdateadvice

You try to make the relationship work all by yourself Too many people get stuck in thinking that the relationship needs them to make it work. You may get treated well, but your partner isn’t actively investing — they’re doing the bare minimum to keep the relationship going. A relationship takes two people. If one is gun-shy — or not on the same page emotionally — there will be a disconnection, which can lead to a kind of cat-andmouse game. You need to have a firm grasp on your values and your identity.

Y have a You vendetta against all members of the opposite sex With the anger that can accompany some breakups — or if you’ve had a number of bad relationships — you might try to convince yourself that all men/women are bad. My advice: Learn what you can from what happened, but there’s no reason to stay focused on the past.

Hard Working fun

Stomp and Holler. Todd Snider may be a singer/songwriter, but interesting things happen when he joins up with jam band players.

Todd Snider knows a good song when he hears one. The East Nashville, Tennessee-based singer/songwriter has written quite a few of his own, but he says he always carries around a list of 20 or so songs. He says of these songs that they’re works “I would be either wishing I could sing myself or just songs that I like or think they might be good for somebody else sometime that thinks the same way as I do. To find those likeminded individuals, Snider turned to an unlikely source: the jam band scene. “Jam bands as a scene is kinda like aerobics meets church meets orgy meets party, he says. “It feels like the really positive part of music. You can get lost in it. Enlisting the skills of Dave Schools (Widespread Panic), Neal Casal (Chris Robinson Brotherhood) and Duane Trucks/Chad Staehly (Great American

What he’s listening to Snyder says he recently put together a compilation of the late Lou Reed’s songs from the 1970s on Spotify. “I love that rock ’n’ roll. I was into it that a lot during ‘East Nashville Skyline,’ he says. “There’s a [Reed] song called ‘Street Hassle,’ and I have a song called ‘Sunshine’ that I owe him about $80 for.

The end result is indeed much like a film. All 10 songs, whether it’s rockers like “Stomp and Holler or the contemplative “Down to the Well, paint a lyrical and sonic picture of the often rough and tumble life of the working class. It’s a story Snider enjoyed telling. “The best way to sing is lost, and it’s easier to get lost in somebody else’s song, he says. “It’s harder to get lost in a house you built than in a home somebody else built. BRIAN HORGEA @metroneyork

‘Blackland Farmer’

Unintended discovery When recording the album’s opening track, “Blackand Farmer,â€? Snider originally thought he was doing a good turn for his friend Elizabeth Cook. Turns out, it wasn’t her song. Frankie Miller, a country singer/songwriter who had a string of hits in the 1950s and ‘60s wrote and recorded it in 1959. “Nashville’s a cool place. After hours at the publishing companies, they will pull out their jammy songs, the hidden songs that they know. Somebody played her a tape of that and she kept it as her own. Then she told me, ‘I didn’t write that,’ which sucked because I wanted to cover a couple of her songs. But I’m glad I got to ďŹ gure out who Frankie Miller was in the process.â€?

Smoking pot In defense is no crime of salmoning Consumption of marijuana for both medical and recreational use is part of mainstream America, transcending generations. Creative entrepreneurs will always provide the citizens’ desire, regardless of government approval. Consumers have voted with their dollars, making marijuana consumption a multibillion-dollar enterprise today. Legalize it and add a sales tax. Revenues will more than cover the costs of any abuse. Our tax dollars will be better used if police and judges spend more time prosecuting those who commit real crimes against individuals or property than going after those who consume or distribute marijuana.

Yesterday, I was badly hurt because I obeyed the law as a cyclist. Had I been riding AGAINST traffic (“salmoning”), I could not have been “doored” by some reckless person getting out of a cab at the wrong space. I was biking slowly, but they opened the door a split second before I was biking by in a tight spot (because many roads say bikes are second class to cars and pedestrians, who get their own dedicated lanes). Stories to watch as Giants meet Texans

SPORTS Paying it back

Vick backs Goodell

Michael Vick may owe still having a career to Roger Goodell, and now he’s backing the commissioner in the NFL’s current domestic violence scandal. “You have to give the man a chance, you have to give him a chance,” Vick said. “You have to give everybody a chance to get it right.” The Jets backup was suspended by Goodell in 2007, but reinstated two years later.

NFL. The Giants season may already be on the line in just their third game of the season against Houston.

The Giants host the surprising Texans in what may already be a mustwin game for Big Blue. As surprised as many may be about the Texans’ quick start, there are likely just as many who are not surprised about New York’s sluggish beginning — particularly given their uneven preseason. Quarterback Eli Manning will have his hands full dealing with All-Pro defensive lineman J.J. Watt and Co., but the Giants as a whole will have more to deal with than just one of the league’s premiere defensive players. Pro Bowler and New Jersey native Brian Cushing leads one of the better defenses in the league, even without No. 1 pick Jadeveon Clowney. Metro takes a look at three storylines to watch for as the Giants take on the 2-0 Texans on Sunday (1 p.m., CBS).

Watt poses unique challege to struggling Giants offense Watch online

Find video and recap of this weekend’s Yankees-Blue Jays homestand at: Metro.us/sports.

The Giants have a struggling offensive line — to go along with their struggling overall offense — which could mean bad news for Big Blue when All-Pro defensive lineman J.J. Watt comes to town. Watt, arguably the best defensive player in the league, is the leader of a Texans team which has already matched last season’s win total. “He’s a very good football player, very

Washington’s army corps The Texans defense has faced some limited offenses this season — beginning with the Redskins and then last week against the Raiders. Sunday could be another walk in the park if the Giants’ offense continues its trend of not moving the chains and struggling to produce more than the 14 points per game it’s averaging. New York will be without Jerrel Jernigan (mid-foot sprain), who

The Texans have utilized a ball-control rushing offense to help keep the turnover-prone Ryan Fitzpatrick under wraps, as he’s yet to throw an interception (345 passing yards, three touchdowns and no picks). Fitzpatrick has a strong arm and has historically liked to gamble in the past with risky passes down field. But under new head coach Bill O’Brien, known as an

was technically a starter in the new-look offense’s three-wideout set. While he wasn’t considered amongst the league’ best, Jernigan manned the ever-important slot position in Ben McAdoo’s offense. It’s up to unknowns Preston Parker, Corey Washington and Julian Talley to get some reps. Parker will be first in line to replace Jernigan, as the fourthyear journeyman has the most NFL experience of the trio. But that might not be too comforting, considering Parker was out of football in 2013.

offensive guru during his time with the New England Patriots and most recently in college with Penn State, the veteran journeyman has been a great game manager. Houston will also rely on the rejuvenated Arian Foster to carry the load on offense in order to have the rushing game dictate the tempo and keep Fitzpatrick in manageable down and distances. Foster already has 55 carries for 241 yards and a touchdown in the first two games of the season.

GIANTS FANS WOULD LOVE TO SEE COREY WASHINGTON MORE INVOLVED IN THE PASSING GAME.

energetic. They move him around and play him in different spots. He comes off the ball very well and has outstanding energy and endurance, so there’s

no doubt we have to be aware of him,” head coach Tom Coughlin said, adding the Giants will look to game plan around Watt. “There are certainly

ways that you can create attention toward a great player inside.” Quarterback Eli Manning also acknowledged Watt’s greatness. But he then preferred to prop up his own offensive line by saying the improving unit can actually dictate tempo and neutralize Watt through attrition. “He’s all he’s worked

Waiting for Beason The unit in charge of making Fitzpatrick look like his old self, the Big Blue defense, has taken its lumps so far. New York has yet to force a turnover this season — the only team in the weak NFC East not to do so — and they’re battling injury issues to key players. Cornerback Walter Thurmond (pectoral), who signed a one-year contract this past offseason, is out for the year, while the linebacker unit has been hindered without rookie Devon Kennard (hamstring), who has yet to take the field this season, and defensive co-captain Jon Beason (foot/ankle), whose Sunday status is still in the air. Beason, who saw a foot specialist on Friday, reaggravated his foot injury last week against the Cardinals. The injury sidelined him for all of training camp. If this is a problem the foot specialist can’t fix, the Giants will have a large void in the middle.

up to be. He’s a good player. We’ve got to know where he is at all times [and] make sure he doesn’t take over the game,” Manning said. “But I think the line is playing better, especially when we have long drives and get a rhythm, and especially when we go no-huddle. If we can get some 12-play drives or so, it slows things down. We need to continue to run the ball and execute short, quick passes. If that happens, then you can kind of sense the defensive line is getting tired and that’s an advantage for us.” TONY WILLIAMS

SPORTS Offensive opening

Decker status still up in air for Monday Eric Decker missed his second straight practice Thursday due to a hamstring injury suffered last week, furthering endangering his chances of playing Monday. “He’s a veteran player, but obviously you’d like to have him test it a litte bit,” Jets head coach Rex Ryan said. “So, I’m not going to say he has to be out [on the practice field] on Saturday, but I’d like to see him do some things. Mainly for his own mentality, his own mindset.” METRO

Tannenbaum draft classes starting to pay dividends NFL. Important contributors like Antonio Allen and Jeremy Kerley were under-the-radar picks by the GM. If you look at the names of many of the Jets’ key contributors this year they have a common theme: Mike Tannenbaum. The former general manager was fired by the ma Jets last year in part due Jet to a perceived lack of talent gleaned over the past few years in the NFL draft. Busts like Stephen Hill and Bu Kyle Wilson remain on Kyl the minds of fans. But this year’s Jets are reaping the ye benefits of some of Tanbe nenbaum’s mid- to latenen round selections. rou Wide receiver Jeremy Kerley, running back K Bilal Powell, nose tackle B

Kenrick Ellis and cornerback Antonio Allen were all taken in the third round or later and are now critical pieces on the Jets’ team. Undrafted free agents linebacker Nick Bellore and nose tackle Damon Harrison are as well. Tannenbaum brought all of them to the Jets. “I always felt it took

three to four years to evaluate a draft,” Tannenbaum told Metro on Wednesday. “The balance you try to strike is you want to win for today and develop for tomorrow. That’s the balance we try to strike. I worry about our process and the people we work with and hopefully it all works out with getting players

that can help immediately. Others take a while to develop.” Some of his picks were no brainers, such as center Nick Mangold and left tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson. Others were a bit of a gamble, such as Muhammad Wilkerson, who was under the radar as a first-round pick but is now one of the NFL’s top defensive ends. Tannenbaum’s philosophy was simple. The first round resolved itself, the second round took some projection in terms of evaluation and trust in players’ college backgrounds in the middle to late rounds. “Draft some good football players from good schools and ask them to do as much reasonably as they did in college,” Tannenbaum said of his late-round philosophy. MLB. Jeter opens final homestand of career this weekend with Jays Derek Jeter has effectively hid his emotions for 20 years in the Bronx. And as the final eight home games of his illustrious career started Thursday night, the Yankee captain maintained that vibe. It’s all part of the routine for Jeter, who might be among the best in the game at keeping a consistent routine, especially with the media. “It’s all anyone’s been talking about,” Jeter said. “I’d like to enjoy it. I’d like to get out there, but nothing has changed from what I spoke in

Tampa to when I spoke today because I haven’t even been outside yet.” All along manager Joe Girardi has maintained this is not a farewell tour and as remote as the Yankees’ playoff chances are, he still is keeping that mindset. “I don’t want to look at it like that because we still have a chance,” Girardi said. “I know our chances aren’t great, but as long as there’s a chance, we have to keep doing what we need to do to win, and that’s what [Jeter] would want too.” LARRY FLEISHER

We know Wally Backman will be joining the Mets for the final week of the season, but he could join the staff permanently in 2015. The Mets annually add a minor league manager in September, but ESPN reports he’s under consideration for a permanent role on the staff under Terry Collins. Backman was 81-53 in Triple-A this year.
