Riding the momentum of Sunday’s People’s Climate March, more than a thousand protesters filled Broadway in lower Manhattan on Monday, shutting down traffic. Flood Wall Street protesters started the morning in Battery Park, with speakers and “non-violence direct action training.” Just before noon, the march started with a path set for Wall Street, which the NYPD had already blocked off with barricades. Instead, the protesters sat down in the middle of Broadway near the

Charging Bull statue and cheered, drummed and sang. Protesters climbed on the outside windowsills of buildings, unveiling their banners. A human microphone advised the demonstrators to remain seated in the streets, to not let traffic through. By early afternoon, the police barricades set up to separate the street and sidewalk came down, with activists pulling them open and yelling: “Let the people in!” By 2 p.m., the masses got hungry, and organizers put out a call for pizzas to be delivered in front of 26 Broadway. Around 4 p.m., the protesters moved toward Wall Street. Moumita Ahmed, 24, who studied environmental science at SUNY Stony Brook, said she was prepared to be arrested.

“People don’t want to be working for Chase Bank giving out money, people don’t want to be working in factory farms under horrible conditions, but the system doesn’t offer alternatives.” Matthew McHale

“This is so important, I’m literally emotional,” Ahmed said, adding it was “beautiful” to see the number of people who cared enough about the cause to assemble and face arrest. “Capitalism is the core of all climate change and an obstacle toward change,” said Ahmed. Matthew McHale, 31, said he traveled to New York from the San Francisco Bay Area for Sunday’s climate march. McHale, who recently graduated from seminary school, said he left politics for the ministry because he wanted to “live out” his “values” in daily life. “Most people don’t have that luxury, that’s part of the reason why were here,” McHale said. Manhattan. Group has roots in Occupy Wall Street movement Shortly after the close of trading on the New York Stock Exchange at 4 p.m., Flood Wall Street demonstrators tried to push back metal barricades the NYPD had used to keep them away, an effort that ended when police turned pepper spray on

the crowd. The group has roots in the Occupy Wall Street movement that started in Zuccotti Park in 2011. Kai Sanburn, a 60-yearold nurse, said she had traveled to New York for Sunday’s march. “Marching is wonder-

ful, but to really change things we really need to change things,” Sanburn said. Flood Wall Street organizers said they hope Monday’s action will draw a link between economic policies and the environment. REUTERS

United Nations representatives are in town, and multiple city streets will be closed to traffic through Sept. 26. The NYPD is urging those traveling near the United Nations at First Avenue and 42nd Street to use mass transit. Daily closures, Monday through Saturday, are: First Avenue from 42nd Street to 48th Street (tunnel underpass will only be closed to trucks and large vehicles) and 44th to 46th Street from First Avenue to Second Avenue. From 5 a.m. through the evening session, 42nd Street from FDR Drive to Second Avenue will close, as well as the entrance and exit ramps to FDR Drive. On Tuesday, FDR Drive will be intermittently closed southbound at 63rd Street and northbound at South Ferry. Additional closures include 50th Street from Park Avenue to 1st Avenue and 1st Avenue from 42nd Street to 50th Street. Some streets will have a single lane of traffic available for emergency vehicles only. Vehicles will be completely banned on 49th and 50th Streets from Lexington to Park Avenue from 10 a.m. Tuesday through 10 p.m. Thursday. Trucks and other large vehicles cannot take Park and Lexington Avenues between 48th and 52nd streets. From Monday through Saturday, 50th and 51st Streets from Park to Madison Avenue have managed closings. Trucks and other large vehicles will not be able to access Madison Avenue between 48th and 52nd Streets. METRO

Gov. Cuomo signs climate act into law Flooding from Superstorm Sandy / CREDIT

“The new reality of extreme weather has had painful consequences for New Yorkers in virtually every region of our state,

but today we’re taking another step forward in our goal of building back better, stronger and more resilient than ever before,

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the Community Risk and Resiliency Act into law on Monday. The bill would increase New York’s preparedness during major storms and protect communities against rising sea levels.

Cuomo said. The law requires state agencies to plan for physical climate risks caused by storm surges or ooding. In addition, it requires that oďŹƒcials will adopt projections for sea level rise by 2016. The legislation also requires agencies to take climate risk into account when issuing permits and funding projects. METRO

Students map fresh food with Earth Day toolkits Manhattan. The project asks students to map out healthy food in their community. Hundreds of classrooms across New York City already have indoor container gardens that allow students to grow food right where they learn. But Earth Day New York wants to kick it up a notch. The nonprofit, as part of its 25th anniversary year, is fundraising on Indiegogo for a “Earth Day/Every Day Food Toolkit that will have students lead the charge of mapping sustainable food resources in their neighborhood, said John Oppermann, managing director.

Earth Day has raised about $10,000 so far, and is hoping to raise $25,000 by Nov. 3.

“Hands on projects are one of the best ways to educate kids and get them excited about a topic, Oppermann said. Once funded, the program will provide students information on healthy foods, then give them lessons on how to map food resources in their community, such as farmers markets, and how to share that information with their parents and friends. The citywide map has the potential to help all New Yorkers gain access to fresh food, even if they aren’t living in a food desert. “Just because healthy foods are available don’t mean people are taking advantage of it, Oppermann said.

•

The program will be piloted through the winter and spring semester,

Oppermann said, and will hopefully get to the point where a team of educators are out in the schools everyday working with children on the toolkits.

Apple sells more than 10 million new iPhones in the first three days Demand. CEO Cook says even more iPhones would have sold if supplies had been available. Apple Inc. said it sold more than 10 million iPhones in the first weekend after its new models went on sale on Friday, underscoring strong demand for phones with larger displays. The company’s firstquarter revenue is likely to be 9 percent higher than Wall Street estimates, based on reported sales and projected demand for the new iPhones, Piper Jaffray & Co. analyst Gene Munster wrote in a note. Bloomberg: Get longer life in NYC Climate change. The former NYC mayor tells Metro that big cities can have an impact in the fight against global warming.

to reduce their electrical consumption, they cannot up electrical production. In New York, for example, the five thermal power stations must pollute less, but this should not be left to us [the United Nations]. It’s [up to] the state of New York to work in this direction. How are you going to convince them? Hmm, call them, write to them, embarrass them, explain to people everything they need from the mayors of the world’s major cities and industrial areas … and ask for help from the government. To Congress, I will explain to them that if they have a policy in favor of the environment, I could support them during their campaign. In the United States, even if I manage to convince the president, every law must be passed by Congress. It’s our Constitution that demands it.

You’ve been appointed the United Nations Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change. What is your mission? U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has asked me to ensure that the big cities put pressure on their governments for help. The majority of progress on the environment comes from the cities or the private sector. Why have you involved yourself in this? As mayor of New York City, I had the obligation of working to improve the quality of life of our residents. And on this point, the environment is an important part. ... I have equally preoccupied myself with questions on public health, and the two issues are intimately linked. What role do you see cities having on this topic? In a city like New York, for example, one of the challenges was to reduce air pollution. We have lowered electrical consumption to limit pollution from power stations outside the city. We also stopped what generates greenhouse gases, with buses, cars and trucks in the city becoming more environmentally friendly, as well as ensuring that buildings generate less pollution. The upside in New York is that 5,000 buildings are responsible for the highest proportion of pollution. And we have already converted 50 percent of them to use natural gas rather than oil. We have helped residents paint their roofs white. Today, 80 percent of roofs are white because we know that it is a method of lowering power consumption. We also encourage the installation of solar panels. In New York, the buildings

What did you do as mayor of New York that you’re most proud of? I always find it difficult to answer this question. But I would cite a number tied to health: 8.4 million people have gained three years of life expectancy during my 12 years in office. That’s an incredible figure. [Americans should] come and live in New York – they will live three years longer. And it’s thanks to the reduction in air pollution, cycling lanes and the installation of smoke detectors in apartments. Which city appears exemplary in the fight against global warming? UN. Ban Ki-Moon: ‘Climate change is an issue for all of us’ Have you wondered about the weather recently? Does it seem strange to you? If so, you’re not alone. People all over the world are noticing. A few hot days or a cold snap may not seem much to worry about – but what about extreme storms, raging floods or a prolonged heat wave? People lose their lives. Businesses lose their profits. In the worst cases, the economic ripples are felt around the world as crops fail, food prices rise and people go hungry. These are the consequences of a disturbed climate. You are most likely reading this on your morning commute in a train, subway car or bus. Mass transit and compact cities are among the many solutions available for tackling the climate challenge. Energy saving and more power from renewable sources are also options. And protecting and expanding forests and other important natural habitats can help.

TRADE LIKE A MILLIONAIRE

TIMOTHY SYKES TIMOTHYSYKES.COM Timothy Sykes is a millionaire stock trader and entrepreneur.

Takes on Alibaba, worth $230 billion The stocks for Alibaba, the giant Chinese e-commerce company, went public last week, and my inbox is stuffed with questions asking for my opinion. Here, three different takes.

Take No. 1: It’s the most profitable in e-commerce

percent. That’s why Amazon is valued at “only” $150 billion while Alibaba is valued at $230 billion. We Americans need to get over thinking we’re No. 1 in every category and realize emerging countries such as China have huge populations that want to purchase goods on the Internet.

Take No. 2: Foreign markets have different rules

Many Americans mistakenly believe Amazon.com has this title. Alibaba has a quarter of the employees and roughly one-tenth the revenue of Amazon, but its profit margins are an astounding 50 percent compared to Amazon’s 1

As many small-cap and penny stock investors have learned the hard way, Chinese companies are not subject to the same strict SEC and accounting require-

ments as U.S. companies, therefore all of their revenue and profit numbers and forecasts must be taken with a grain of salt. I spent a month in China and learned anything you make will be copied and sold at a massive discount to the ravenous Chinese consumer. It’s truly buyer beware in China and in Chinese stocks.

Take No. 3: The stock market is a battle A case can be made that Alibaba is conservatively valued, even at $230 billion, because they’re fast grow-

ing, profitable and their target market is incredibly large and has devoted customers. But you can also say that the market in China is like the “Wild West,” with great volatility and there are lingering questions about the Chinese government, freedom, censorship and competition. My overall take on Alibaba, however, is that I have no idea what it will do. It’s OK to be unsure in the stock market; you’ll go much further in business if you’re honest and don’t pretend you know everything.

I like how many Apple fanboys have ripped on the new Apple Watch. It’s good to see honesty take center stage for what seems to be a truly disappointing new product.

THE Emma Watson not just a pretty WORD face (but check out her brother!) Ned Ehrbar takes on the world of gossip. NED EHRBAR

@Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.us

Ladies and gentlemen, Emma Watson is your new feminist icon. The “Harry Potter” star and U.N. Goodwill Ambassador gave an impassioned speech at the United Nations headquarters this weekend to launch the HeForShe campaign, looking to help turn men into advocates as well. “I decided that I was a feminist; this seemed uncomplicated to me. But my recent research has shown me that feminism has become an unpopular word. Women are choosing not to identify as feminists. Apparently, [women’s expression is] seen as too strong, too aggressive, anti-men, unattractive,” Watson said during her speech. “Why has the word become such an unpopular one? I think it is right I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should make decisions about my own

Though I was a little distracted by the presence of her ludicrously attractive brother seated behind her. Well, hello there, Alex Watson!

out she was standing in front of posters from Iraq. Heigl responded by stating, “The sets we use on ‘State of Affairs’ represent many different countries around the world. We were actu-

Italian directors say Sharon Stone ‘slightly declining’

Sharon Stone is getting a bad rap from the Italian filmmaking duo Pupi and Antonio Avati, with whom she worked on the upcoming “Golden Boy.” At a press conference in Rome, the Avatis recounted some diva-ish behavior during production, according to

the Hollywood Reporter. “On set there were more than 200 paparazzi. There her ego definitively inflated. It is the classic pattern with these American actresses who are slightly declining.” Ouch! Pupi says Stone refused to return to the set until the paps left.

While the rest of us have to wait until next year to find out how “Mad Men” ends, there’s at least one person not working on the show who knows: Jon Hamm’s longtime girlfriend, Jennifer Westfeldt. “Oh, she knows. Want to get kids to read a book? Tell them it was once against the law to read it. This week marks the 32nd celebration of Banned Books Week, a time when librarians, booksellers, authors, publishers, teachers and readers come together as a united front to celebrate and protect the freedom to read.

How it all started Banned Books Week began in 1982 when it was founded by First Amendment and library activist Judith Krug. At that time there was a sudden swell in the number of books being challenged within schools, bookstores and

libraries. Banned Books Week always takes place during the last week in September and serves as a reminder to everyone of the importance of free expression of ideas, as well as uninhibited access to information. It’s sponsored by

groups such as the American Booksellers Association, Freedom to Read Foundation and the American Library Association.

David Bowie goes to the movies

2 4 6 1 3 5 With the doc “David Bowie is” playing local movie theaters tonight, we look at the legend’s greatest screen performances.

‘Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence’

‘The Man Who Fell to Earth’

1976 Bowie had appeared in an experimental short, “The Image,” in 1969, but didn’t make a proper film crossover until the mid-’70s. Naturally, he was playing an alien: a being seeking a way to save his arid planet who instead gets distracted by the ways of man. And as directed by Nicolas Roeg, who loves elliptical editing and lots of zooms, it’s a film even more radical than Bowie’s music at the time.

1983 In “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” Bowie was playing on his image. Turns out he can be a very good thespian. One of his other too few lead roles lies in this intense POW drama, with Bowie as a prisoner whose relations with a sadistic Captain border on the homoerotic. Alas, Bowie has said he dislikes screen acting, as he finds the production pace too slow.

‘The Hunger’

1983 Audiences were lured into this MTV-style vampire opus for the much-reported sex scene between Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon. But the real pull is Bowie’s brief performance as Deneuve’s longtime companion. He’s only in the first 30 minutes, having suddenly discovered he’s rapidly aging. But it may be his best performance, one teeming with regret and elegance, maintaining dignity in the face of coming death.

‘Labyrinth’

‘The Prestige’

1986 One of the great all-star teams of movies featured Jim Henson, Terry Jones and Bowie, who’s made to look like a leopard as a “Goblin King” who wants to woo a teenager (Jennifer Connelly). His plan? Kidnap her baby brother and trap her in a puppet-laden maze. (The ’80s were weird.) Bowie is all rock star here, and it’s one of the only films he’s been in that actually uses his music, including the showstopper “Magic Dance.”

2006 For its first hour, Christopher Nolan’s dueling magicians classic builds up the introduction of Nikola Tesla. When he finally arrives, not only is he David Bowie, but he gets one of the all-time best movie entrances, walking through an electromagnetic field. Later Tesla reflects on his career, which for Bowie surely hit close to home: “The first time I changed the world I was hailed as a visionary. The second time I was asked politely to retire.”

‘Basquiat’

1996 Many have attempted to portray Andy Warhol, but Bowie — who wrote a song for him on his 1971 album “Hunky Dory” — comes the closest to embodying him without lapsing into impersonation-heavy parody. In Julian Schnabel’s film, he plays the artist in his latter years — a shadow of his former self, yet still aloof as he sucks the young and doomed Jean-Michel Basquiat (Jeffrey Wright) into his questionable orbit.

David Bowie as David Bowie Sometimes Bowie just got to be Bowie. As early as 1969, he was performing some of his bouncy, Anthony Newley-esque songs in the music short film “Love Me Till Tuesday.” In 1973, at the height of his fame, he had a concert film, “Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars: The Motion Picture” — which, curiously, was not an immaculately shot picture but instead a rough and zoom-heavy one by hyper-realist legend D.A. Pennebaker (of the Bob Dylan doc “Don’t Look Back”). The next year he was alarmingly fragile

and shaken in the hour-long documentary “Cracked Actor,” which caught him as drugs seeped through his system. He was sprightlier in 1982’s West German docudrama “Christiane F.,” which features a scene where the protagonist goes to a Bowie concert. And then there’s his walk-on in 2001’s “Zoolander,” where he was content to sit on the throne he deserved. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Art imitates life for Bethenny Frankel Story time. The celebrity’s new children’s book is about how her daughter and dog didn’t always get along.

Digital. Tech execs tend to limit their kids’ screen time Williams says his kids’ preferred toys are books. And he means actual books, not a Nook or Kindle. The debate over how much screen time is appropriate for kids is nothing new. In one corner are the experts who say giving kids the latest technology helps them learn skills they need to succeed. Other experts say that children need to step away from screens and get outside to play. Most agree that anything in moderation is OK, however, including screen time.

You would think that parents who work at Apple, Google and other big tech companies give their kids free rein when it comes to using electronics. But according to a recent story in The New York Times, they are actually quite stringent when it comes to their children’s screen time. According to the report, not even Steve Jobs let his kids have an iPad when they first came out. “We limit how much technology our kids have at home, he told The New York Times in 2010. Bethenny Frankel has conquered television, the cocktail industry and the self-help genre. Now, she’s adding another accomplishment to her rĂŠsumĂŠ: children’s book author. Hitting store shelves tomorrow is Frankel’s first kids’ book, “Cookie Meets Peanut,â€? which was inspired by her own pooch and

daughter. In the book, Cookie the dog gets mom’s undivided attention. That is, until a new baby comes along. “Years ago, I met a mom at the gym who had just had a baby, and she told me, when you have a baby, your dog becomes a dog. Before you have kids, your dog is your baby, but when you have a real baby, your dog becomes a dog. This book is about that new dynamic that takes place, Frankel explains.

She hopes that readers will regard it as more than just a cute story they can enjoy with their kids, and that it will help families make sense of that new transition. “My dog is quite difficult, so I worried that she wouldn’t want to have anything to do with my daughter; but then it turned out being the other way around, Frankel says about how the adjustment went down in her own home. Now that her daughter, Bryn, is 4, Frankel says she enjoys having a pet more. “Older kids appreciate dogs more. They see them on the street and on TV ... and they’re proud they have one, too, she says.

The Earth’s climate is getting warmer, and humans are responsible. That’s not my opinion, that’s a fact supported by more than 97 percent of climate scientists. We’ve already made a good start by making our cars and trucks more efficient while starting to limit pollution from the dirtiest power plants, the chief contributor of America’s climate change pollution. To prevent the devastating effects of the climate crisis, we should all support these efforts. HSIAO-WEI CHOU, VIA EMAIL

Kelly, Williams iron out argument Everybody was fighting during EaglesRedskins on Sunday — even the Eagles’ star cornerback and his coach. But one day after Cary Williams criticized Chip Kelly for practicing players too hard — after a win, mind you — Kelly said the issue was ironed out. “He was frustrated,” Kelly said. “I have no issues with Cary. Cary’s just a competitor. He always wants to play a perfect game.”

Mistakes doom Jets in last-minute loss NFL. Geno Smith threw two picks — one in the end zone and one for a TD — in the team’s second loss. The Jets have very little room for error with a farfrom-explosive offense. They went far beyond their wiggle room on Monday night. The Jets fell to 1-2 with a 27-19 loss to the Bears. They drove inside the 10 with under a minute remaining, but Geno Smith couldn’t find Jeremy Kerley in the back of the end zone on fourth down to set up a two-point conversion to tie the game. Metro looks at what went wrong in the loss.

Geno Smith finished 26-of-43 for 316 yards and a touchdown, but two costly interceptions as well. / GETTY IMAGES

1

Wrong team Geno Smith’s second year in the NFL is beginning to look an awful lot like his rookie season. Smith had a horrible first quarter interception on the game’s opening possession and a batted-down pass on the Jets’ second drive. With the Jets driving again in the third quarter and down 24-13, Smith made the terrible decision to loft a pass in the direction of David Nelson that rookie Kyle Fuller easily picked off. Despite rave reviews this offseason, he is still a work in progress.

2

On the bright side While the Jets offense often struggled, they did have a positive in Jeremy Kerley. •

Kerley finished with seven catches for 81 yards and a touchdown. He was targeted 11 times by Geno Smith.

The fourth-year receiver had 13 targets in the first two weeks combined.

KERLEY PROVIDED A SECURITY BLANKET FOR GENO SMITH. GETTY IMAGES

Back it up An already-thin Jets secondary was always going to be tested with Dee Milliner out for his second game this season. Bears QB Jay Cutler tested them all game and the Jets were only occasionally up to the test. Antonio Allen was regularly beaten in coverage, despite nice tackling, and there were repeated breakdowns. The Bears scored their final touchdown on a complete misplay by Phillip Adams.

3

Jace can’t keep pace The Jets needed a big play in the third quarter on third-and-2 when Smith rolled out to his right and sent a pass right to the chest of tight end Jace Amaro. The second-round pick let it bounce off his chest as he attempted to make a body catch. He still has talent, but he’s looking like more of a project than ever.

Giants ready for quick turnaround While most teams take a day off Tuesday, the Giants will be back to work with a short week to get ready for Week 4. New York faces NFC East rival Washington on the road Thursday in a national TV game. “It is always a challenge to have this type of turnaround in the NFL,

to go from a Sunday to a Thursday night,” veteran linebacker Jameel McClain said. “How I look at it is both teams are going through the same thing. It is more of a mental preparation style week because of the physicality [of the game]. Most people’s bodies don’t really recover until Tuesday or Wednesday.” The NFL has slowly instituted a package of Thursday night games with this year’s coming earlier than

ever (and nationally on CBS instead of NFL Network). But at least the Giants might have one advantage due to the opponent. “It helps being a divisional game,” right tackle Justin Pugh said. “We know these guys a little better than playing a non-division opponent. ... You have to put in those extra hours outside of that facility to make sure you are up to speed with where you would be if it was a regular week.” MARK OSBORNE

MLB. Teixeira undergoes third d cortisone shot, misses O’s opener ner Mark Teixeira’s neverending injury story continued on Monday with his third cortisone shot of the season in his right wrist. The Yankees first baseman exited Sunday’s game against the Blue Jays early and did not play last night in the series opener against the Orioles. Teixeira missed almost all of last season after undergoing surgery to repair a tendon sheath in his right wrist. He ended up playing

in just 15 games. This season he’s been in and out of the lineup due to injuries though he’s played in 119 games. He’s batted just .216 this season which is the lowest qualifying total of his career. He would also set career lows in on-base percentage (.317) and slugging percentage (.395). The Yankees have just six games remaining this season, but Teixeira said he does hope to be back in the lineup as soon as Tuesday.

Francisco Cervelli rvelli started at first base for the Yankees Monday night against the Orioles. It was just his fourth start at first base this season. Teixeira still has two years and $45 million left on the eight-year, $180 million deal he signed before the 2009 9 season.
