MBTA vigilant in wake of reported ISIS terror threats Boston. T security officials are monitoring reports of a potential terror plot targeting U.S. subways. The MBTA beefed up high-visibility patrols Thursday after Iraq claimed it received credible information that Islamic State militants were plotting an imminent attack on subway systems in the U.S. and Paris. Prime Minister Haider alAbadi told reporters at the United Nations that he had received information Thursday morning from militants captured in Iraq that the radical Sunni militant group, commonly known as ISIS, had planned attacks “in the metros of Paris and the U.S.” Senior U.S. officials said they had no evidence to back up the claim. “The MBTA is aware of the recent report pertaining to al-

leged subway plots in Europe and elsewhere,” Transit Police Chief Paul MacMillan said in an emailed statement Thursday afternoon, adding that T officials were in close contact with local and state police, as well as the Boston Office of the FBI and the Transportation Security Administration. No direct threat has been made against Boston’s transportation system, though out of an abundance of caution, the T planned to increase both high-visibility and K-9 patrols. Passengers, however, were urged to keep their eyes peeled for unusual activity on the T. “There is no information that either the MBTA or Boston is a specific subject of this report. As always, we ask that customers and employees remain vigilant and report any suspicious incidents to the MBTA Transit Police,” said MacMillan. MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

A federal judge on Wednesday denied a bid by accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to move his upcoming terror trial out of the city; however, he agreed to postpone it by two months. Injured? Let Us Help You.

Could U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder’s resignation have local implications? Speculation was rampant Thursday that Gov. Deval Patrick could succeed Holder, who is stepping down after six years in the role. Multiple national news outlets, including NBC News and USA Today, reported that the governor, who is known to be close with President Barack Obama, would be on the shortlist for the post. The speculation, however, is just that. The Associated Press quoted Patrick, who was in Washington, D.C., on Friday for the Congressional Black Caucus, as saying he was not interested in leading the U.S. Department of Justice right now. Holder, the nation’s first black attorney general, is one of the federal government’s longest-serving chief law enforcement officers.

Iraqi PM says Islamic militants plans attacks on US subways No evidence. Haider al-Abadi’s comments were met with surprise and skepticism by US security officials. Iraq has received “credible” intelligence that Islamic State militants plan to attack subway systems in Paris and the United States, Iraq’s prime minister said on Thursday, but U.S. and French officials said they had no evidence to back up the claim. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said he had received

the information Thursday morning from militants captured in Iraq and concluded it was credible after asking for further details. The attacks, he said, were plotted from inside Iraq by “networks” of the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL. “I asked for more credible information. I asked for names. I asked for details, for cities, you know, dates. And from the details I have received, yes, it looks credible,” Abadi told a small group of reporters while in New York for the meeting of the U.N. General Assembly. He did not provide further details. A senior Iraqi official, speaking on condition of

No information confirming Ben Rhodes, a deputy national security adviser to U.S. President Barack Obama, said the United States had “not confirmed any specific threat.” “What we’ve consistently said to the Iraqis is if they have information that is relevant to terrorist activity or terrorist plotting, that they can and should share that through our intelligence and law enforcement challenges,” Rhodes told reporters traveling with Obama on Air Force One from New York. French security services also said they had no information confirming Abadi’s statement, a French government official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. REUTERS

HEAR NO EVIL FROM OPPOSITION Amid the news of air strikes, coffee salutes and elbowing at the U.N. buffet this week, I spotted a headline from Bloomberg View about “partyism” now being the big divider in our society trumping racism, religion or damn-near-anything else. At first I took this as a good thing. “After all,” I told my wife, “wouldn’t it be better if we all loved hot wings, cold beer and balloons more than wearing bed sheets and toting torches? I’m going to grab the cooler and some Japanese lanterns from the basement.” “Hold on,” Linda said, reading more closely. “It’s a different kind of partyism.” Turns out the article was pushing the idea that nothing makes one American more

suspicious of another these days than the political flag the “other” flies. A Dem would rather see his daughter marry a fang-bearing creature of the night than a Repub. A Repub would rather see her son whisked away by aliens with probes than carted off to a Dem barbecue. You get the picture. I’m not sure I buy it even in these hyper-partisan times. And if it is true, I’m not sure I like it. We’ve been working on our prejudices for so long, I hate to think that a lot of old favorites could be so easily shoved aside for a trendy new hatred. Still, as I think it over, maybe this could prove handy. “Imagine all the time we can save if we let this type of intolerance run amok,” I told Linda. “No more tedious political debates in which you might

risk hearing a good idea from the other side. No more hours wasted considering contrary opinions. No more Thanksgiving dinners ruined by crazy cousin Hank and his conspiracy theories.” “Yeah?” she said. “You know we’re already kind of approaching our politics that way, and look how it is working out. Gridlock. Mistrust. Frankly, I think if someone doesn’t listen to opposing views on a pretty regular basis, they are the very definition of intolerance and ignorance.” She’s funny that way. I’d better be careful. But she’s starting to make sense.

We’re rewarding ourselves with more than just ordering dessert after exercising, according to a new study. On days when people exercise more, typically Thursday through Sunday, researchers found that they also drink more alcohol. “Monday through Wednesday, people batten down the hatches and they cut back on alcohol consumption, lead author David E. Conroy says. “But once that ‘social weekend’ kicks off on Thursdays, physical activity increases — and so does alcohol consumption. The study’s 150 participants, aged 18 to 89, tracked their physical activity and drinking habits via smartphone for three-week periods three times throughout the year. The researchers found that, across all ages and levels of fitness, when people are more active, they tend to have more alcoholic drinks than on days with less activity.

The study did not ask people their reasons for drinking. “Perhaps people reward themselves for working out by having more to drink, or maybe being physically active leads them to encoun-

‘Icing on the cake’

As “Saturday Night Live” begins its 40th season, we celebrate with choice quotes from the new edition of the “Live From New York” book by James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales. The authors spoke with nearly every living cast member for a 2004 edition, and over the past decade they collected new anecdotes from those same people as well as from many of the current cast members, who we’re profiling here. One common thread runs through the narrative: It’s intense!

Sasheer Zamata

Vanessa Bayer

Kenan Thompson

Cecily Strong

“I knew there was going to be craziness. My phone blew up when there was news I was auditioning. ... And then when I got it — much more: 300 text messages.”

“No matter what the setup of the cast is, people will always have an opinion of what it should be. ... What people think about ‘SNL,’ they feel a lot of ownership over it. It’s like a sports team.”

“I can’t even watch the show the same way now. ... It’s crazy to imagine your picture at some point in that long line of head shots that we have up there on the wall.”

“Every time I have a meeting with Lorne, I assume I’m getting fired. It’s like seeing a doctor and you assume they’re going to tell you that you have AIDS, even if it’s a dentist.”

Colin Jost

Bobby Moynihan

Jay Pharoah

Aidy Bryant

“There’s a lot more anxiety in being the head writer. You feel a responsibility for the show. ... It changes from being a really fun job to being a challenging and stressful job.”

“I’ll stay here as long as they’ll have me. This was my dream, and I should be thinking more about the future ... but ... when I walk out this door, I want to be able to say to myself, ‘You did what you wanted to do.’”

“You’ll have a role here that’s not really funny — you’re being a team player and everything’s about being a team player. In everything. That’s how people get to the Super Bowl.”

“People immediately, when you have gone through being on ‘SNL,’ even for — I’ve only been here for two years and yet I feel like people within the industry are, like, really impressed by that and take you seriously.”

Taran Killam “My first season or two there was a Huffington Post article that ranked cast members on a weekly basis. They had their own algorithm of screen time — who did what, what is the best sketch — and I was the worst. I was just the worst! It’s a dangerous pitfall. With a 40-year history, there’s so much to compare yourself to. The shadow grows longer and darker the longer the show goes on. Now we’re not just compared to the original ’75 cast, we’re compared to six generations, versus the people who came before were compared to five.”

PAT HEALY @metrousmusic pat.healy@metro.us

For the long haul

Kate McKinnon “In my mind, this is my last job. I am preparing for that being the reality. Obviously, I hope that I have a long career because I would feel bad if I couldn’t work. Anything else beyond this would be icing on the cake.”

Q&A SIMON PEGG ON THE KEY TO HAPPINESS

The British comedy legend swears his new film is schmaltzy but also a bit sophisticated. Simon Pegg goes all out in “Hector and the Search for Happiness,” playing the titular psychiatrist stymied by modern life who embarks on a globe-trotting trip to get in touch with his inner child. To hear Pegg tell it, how you respond to the film says a lot about you. It’s easy to feel like a sap for falling for this. Well, one person’s sap is another

person’s ... emotionally open person. There’s nothing wrong with giving yourself over to something. It’s easy to be cynical and dismiss something that’s arguably sentimental as being frivolous, but I don’t think that’s true. I think the message of this film is a little bit more sophisticated than just schmaltz. It’s about getting in touch with a childlike wonder and accessing your own happiness through that. If you’re fundamentally unhappy, this

film will shine quite a bright light on that, whereas if you have a capacity to be happy you’ll come out of it going, “Yeah, man!” [Laughs] At one point, Hector gets very down on his profession of psychiatry because many of his patients treat it as a luxury item, but that’s not the whole of that field. I totally agree that in psychiatry you can help people to address issues that they have that might damage their lives.

But at the same time when you don’t have to worry about survival, when you don’t have to worry about finding your next meal or living through the night, you have time to start thinking about stuff like that. And that’s when you start questioning your happiness. There is a certain numbness to modern living for us in affluent society where we have so much choice and we’re so looked after, offered so much stuff that’s supposed to make us happy

POP QUIZ: WHICH MOVIE WHERE DENZEL WASHINGTON KILLS A LOT OF PEOPLE IS THIS FROM? SCOTT GARFIELD

‘The Equalizer’ ••••• What was once a weekly ’80s TV show about a loner (Edward Woodward) helping out those in trouble is now a straight-up vigilante movie for Denzel Washington, where his Special Forces he-man-turnedhardware-store-employee takes on the Russian mob. The lowdown: Though a movie version of an old show, “The Equalizer” is really more of a remake of another movie where Washington plowed through a powerful crime organization after they hurt a young girl. In 2004’s “Man on Fire,” it was Dakota Fanning; here, it’s Chloe Grace Moretz, as a prostitute for the Russian mob. But where “Fire” was phantasmagorically unpleasant, “The Equalizer” is unnecessarily funereal. Washington previously teamed

with director Antoine Fuqua on “Training Day.” The latter seems to think this is “King Lear.” It’s not. It’s a trashy “Death Wish” ripoff in nice clothes. But there’s no tension. Washington’s avenger is closer to Scarlett Johansson in “Lucy”: an untouchable superhero, or at least one who can always find a “MacGyver”-esque way to cauterize a wound. Washington is reliably eccentric, but only hammy Marton Csokas, as an intensely quiet, tattooed psycho mafia enforcer, gets that this is silly.

‘The Boxtrolls’ ••••• Laika, the mordant stop-motion animation team that made “Coraline” and “ParaNorman,” match Dickens with monsters for their latest, about a hilly English town whose denizens worry about underground trolls, who, of course, are perfectly harmless. The lowdown: Any stop-motion factory has to be judged against Aardman, the relentlessly clever team responsible for “Wallace and Gromit.” Laika aren’t as good, but they are more morbid, nearly as clever and, in the case of “The Boxtrolls,” at least as excessively English. The jokes don’t come terribly fast in this gloomy number — and sometimes

A BOY NAMED EGGS LIVES AMONG SOME MONSTERS IN “THE BOXTROLLS.” LAIKA, FOCUS FEATURES

they don’t come at all. But the mood is a sustained one, always teetering between dark and funny, with just enough “heart” — that dreaded ’toon requisite — to show it has a pulse without ruining the fun. In fact, the foundation is sound: It’s a social commentary that never turns didactic; a heavy fable that’s light on its feet; an all-star animation where every actor is chosen for talent, not his or her name. The trolls — who, yes, wear boxes around their waists — remain babbling cuties on the order of “Despicable Me” minions, while even the villains are adorable — chiefly the head baddie voiced by Ben Kingsley: a lactoseintolerant social climber. The actor speaks in a sing-songy patter that clings to each vowel like butter on an artery lining, ensuring that “The Boxtrolls” is as much fun to listen to as it is to look at — which is to say, very. Charles J. Orlando is a relationship expert and author of the best-selling book series “The Problem with Women … Is Men.” Find out more about him on his website, or visit him on Facebook for realworld love advice.

Studies have shown that a woman discovers everything she needs to know about a potential lover from the very first kiss, and any guy who has tried to get to first base on a date knows it. Interestingly, it’s not just humans who show affection this way. Bonobo chimpanzees kiss on the lips, elephants put their trunks in each other’s mouths and foxes lick each other’s faces — all as signs of affection. More than half of all people experience their first real kiss by the time they’re 14 years old, but more often than not it isn’t the same as our teenage dreams. As adults, it can’t hurt to know a little bit more about the mechanics of kissing. Here are some interesting bits about one of our favorite activities: • Kissing is exercise: When we kiss, our hearts beat faster and our breathing becomes deeper, mimicking the way our bodies react to exercise. If done with passion, a 60-second kiss burns more than 50 calories.

For exclusive commentary, visit Metro.us/blogs.

Love is what you get when you stop looking for it and instead invest in the best YOU that you can.

↑ ↓ To women dating married men: You are an option ... and you are borrowing someone else’s spouse. When you value YOU, you will find your own love.

• Kissing raises self-esteem: Kissing sends signals to our brain to produce hormones that make us feel good. And it’s no surprise that one kiss leads to another.

So, what’s the secret to a romantic kiss? After interviewing over 500 women, there are some very common threads of what is wanted and not wanted:

Don’ts • “Sloppy, wet and all over.” • “His tongue all the way down my throat.” • “He shouldn’t think that a kiss is the precursor to oral sex.”

Do’s • Start gently. Let your mouth wander, but pay attention to your partner’s reactions and act accordingly. • Light strokes on the cheekbones, neck and back get extra points, as these areas are usually ignored. • Start slowly, and watch for signs that encourage more rapid movement.

Return of the Rosebud Restaurants. A Davis Square favorite reopens under new ownership and with a new look (but only on the inside).

Bonus question

The Rosebud, the famous train car diner in Davis Square, has been part of the scene in Somerville for a very long time — so long, in fact, that it’s on the National Historic Register. That meant a few hiccups along the way for Alpine Restaurant Group, which took over the space and renovated it (they also run Posto and Painted Burro). It reopened last week as Rosebud American Kitchen & Bar. Chef John Delpha answered a few questions about the challenges of renovating such an old building.

it’s this very rustic, beautiful industrial sort of lighting, and then when you go to the diner car, it’s all black and red and shiny silver table edges, and a black ceiling. It’s a really cool look.

How different does it look now? You walk into the restaurant,

So it’s almost like two different dining experiences. You get two different vibes.

The facade and the sign outside are the same, but the diner car looks a bit different. Get to know the Rosebud again at 381 Summer St. / DEREK KOUYOUMJIAN

The food is the same in both places. You’re just looking at different stuff. We’ve had a lot of people request to be in the diner car. Did you happen to find anything weird while you were renovating? You mean like, 150 phone lines for certain operations?

Any recommendations? We have a sandwich that I call a Texas Rachel in a skirt. A Rachel is a Reuben but you use coleslaw. Instead of the pastrami, I do barbecue brisket. We use rye bread, we cover it with cheese, put that on a flat top, let the cheese melt out over the edges and that forms a little skirt for the sandwich. Top that with barbecued brisket, onions, coleslaw and horseradish sauce, and that’s our Reuben that’s actually a Rachel. There were 150 phone lines hooked up? There might have been. I don’t know if I should be mentioning that. I think there was something shady going on around here. LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld lisa.weidenfeld@metro.us

‘Bent’ is just superb Review. Zeitgeist Stage Company’s production about a gay man in Nazi Germany is heart-wrenching and powerful. Zeitgeist Stage Company just upped its already impressive game with its superb current production of “Bent,” a Holocaust tale of the Nazi persecution of gay people. The play opens in pre-World War II Germany, on what appears to be a typical morning after in the Berlin apartment of Max and Rudy. The lovers discuss how they’re going to pay the rent, the previous evening’s escapades and the leather boy Max brought home although claims he doesn’t remember. Wolf, the leather boy, brings more than late-night debauchery to the couple. His political

affiliations lead to trouble for all three, as Max and Rudy are forced to run for their lives, with Max ultimately landing in Dachau. Mikey DiLoreto is both hilarious and heart-breaking as the flamboyant, free-spirited dancer Rudy. From the flip of a limp wrist to the gut-wrenching screams of horror, DiLoreto displays impressive range in his stellar work. An especially gaunt-looking Brooks Reeves delivers a flawless, disturbing turn as Horst, the resigned gay prisoner Max meets at Dachau, who changes Max forever. In one of

the show’s most poignant moments, Horst explains to Max the hierarchy of the pink triangle and yellow star symbols the prisoners wear, noting that “pink is the lowest.” As Max, Victor Shopov delivers a performance as close to perfection as live theater gets. His transformation from hustling party boy to proud man owning his truth and his fate is spellbinding. The palpable frustration of his powerlessness, his ability to survive in a concentration camp and the physicality of the role make Shopov exhausting and exhilarating to watch.

Eagles looking to continue hot start to season NCAA. Boston College will be seeking its fourth win of the season on Saturday, and it’s not even October yet. Boston College (3-1) could soon be making an appearance in the AP Top 25 poll as the Eagles have been dancing around in the “others receiving votes” category since upsetting USC two weeks ago. Beating Colorado State at home this weekend (12:30 p.m., ESPN3) won’t exactly wow voters as the Eagles are favored by a touchdown. But the Rams certainly qualify as a “quality opponent” as they own a 2-1 record and play out of the oft-overlooked Mountain West Conference. The Rams beat Colorado (31-17) in their home opener a By the numbers

Boston College quarterback Tyler Murphy has more rushing yards than he does passing yards so far this season, gaining 500 yards on the ground and 491 yards through the air.

month ago, fell to Boise State (37-24) on the road a week later and beat UC Davis (49-21) at home on Sept. 13. Colorado State enjoys airing it out as, statistically, it has the 11th-best passing attack in the country. The Rams are throwing the ball at a 340-yards-pergame clip. Garrett Grayson is the maestro at quarterback with Rashard Higgins (19 catches, 306 yards, three touchdowns in 2014) hauling in most of Grayson’s passes. The Rams will likely be without second-leading receiver Joe Hansley this weekend at The Heights as he went down with what was believed to be a concussion at practice this week. It’s entirely possible that this game could be a high-scoring affair as Colorado State’s defensive weakness plays into the Eagles’ strength. The Rams allow 212.3 yards per game on the ground, the 106th worst mark out of 124 teams in FBS. Boston College, meanwhile, is fifth best in the nation at running the ball as it averages 336.3 yards per game. BC nearly had three players rush for over 100 yards in last week’s win over Maine as Marcus Outlow (107 yards on 14 carries), Tyler Murphy (99 yards on 13 carries) and Jon Hilliman (98 yards on 21 carries) all excelled on the ground.

The Eagles will be off next weekend, but will jump back into ACC play on Oct. 11. A look at BC’s upcoming schedule: Saturday vs. Colorado State (12:30 p.m., ESPN 3)

Saturday, Oct. 11 at North Carolina State (TBA)

Saturday, Oct. 18 vs. Clemson (TBA)

MLB. Red Sox downplay potential Jeter circus Derek Jeter will be in Boston this weekend, but there was still a question of whether or not he would actually play in the three-game series at Fenway as of Thursday afternoon. A source told Newsday that Jeter is “likely to DH at Fenway, saving his final appearance at shortstop for the Bronx.” The Yankees played their final home game of 2014 Thursday night. Red Sox CEO Larry Lucchino told WEEI’s “Dennis & Callahan” show Thursday that the celebration

the Sox have for Jeter this weekend will be “low key.” “I don’t think you’ll see too many talking heads,” Lucchino said. “But there will be plenty of gestures of respect for him. In terms of tangible gifts for him, we’re not giving him a red convertible or something like that. What he cares most about these days is his Turn 2 Foundation. And we intend to make a sizable contribution to that, and to give a little piece of Fenway Park to take with him.” METRO
