Officials assure New Yorkers subway is safe Not a threat. Cameramen, security and tinted vehicles surrounded two of the city’s busiest stations, waiting for the governor and mayor to speak. “Let the train pass, one second,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said as he waited for the E train to pass. In a symbolic move to show New Yorkers it’s safe to ride the subway, Cuomo and MTA Chairman Tom Prendergast boarded a train near the World Trade Center on Thursday afternoon — after the nation became warned of a terror threat. Earlier on Thursday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said he was informed of the subway plot in the United States and Paris by intelligence in Baghdad, and that it was from foreign ISIS fighters. The White House has not confirmed the potential threats. For New Yorkers, that means greater police presence than before. “You are going to see more city police, more MTA police, Port Authority police, state police, more K-9 units,” Cuomo said. He added that the state of preparedness is

‘There is no immediate, credible threat’ The governor said that it is known New York is a potential target for retaliation by these terrorist networks, but that should not be a bother. “What the terrorists are trying to do is disrupt our lifestyle and disrupt our democracy. And we shouldn’t let them do that in any matter, shape or form.” Gov. Cuomo went to Broome County for the same purpose. He advises if you see some-
thing suspicious, then say something. Later Thursday, Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner Bill Bratton also boarded the subway, riding from City Hall to Union Square, and holding a press conference to show New Yorkers that the trains are safe, and disputing the terror threats. “I have a simple message for all New Yorkers: There is no immediate credible threat to our subway system,” de Blasio said. “I say that with confidence. People should go about their business as they normally would.”
the highest since 9/11 with law enforcement teams working better together. But for some residents, Thursday’s response already seemed to be late. “They should take precautions even before they hear about a plot,” said one woman on her way to a U.N. General Assembly meeting also taking place that day. “Don’t wait to hear about it.” As he prepared for his ride, Cuomo said, “Every New Yorker is aware that New York is a potential target for retaliation by these terrorist networks.” One woman working inside the building standing above the World

Crime is down in the city and across New York state / GETTY IMAGES
Research results released on Thursday found New York state to have its lowest crime rate in 20 years, though the city still accounts for 69 percent of all violent crimes reported in the state. Violent crimes, which rose in New York City from 2009 to 2012, fell about 1 percent from 2012 to 2013. During the last year, the
number of reported aggravated assault and larcenies increased slightly. Murders dropped from 419 in 2012 to 335 in 2013, and burglaries and motor vehicle thefts were down by about 10 percent each. The research, based on FBI data, was published by the PEW Charitable Trusts, and also found the state incarcerations are
significantly down. The lower rates were driven in part by a decrease in the number of reported crimes in the city, down by 73 percent since 1990. State crime was at an all-time low in 2013, according to a report by the Division of Criminal Justice Services, and it has continued to drop in 2014. WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE

Crime. NYPD looking for robbery suspects who threatened boy, 1 The NYPD is looking for two robbery suspects they say pulled a gun on a 1-year-old boy in Brooklyn. According to the NYPD, the alleged robbery happened at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at a home on East 49th Street in Brooklyn’s 67th Precinct. The suspects entered the home and picked up a 1-year-old boy, pointed a gun at him and threatened to take him. The boy was later
thrown to the ground, and the suspects fled the scene with sneakers and electronics. Both men wore bandannas over their faces. The first suspect is described as a black male, 20 to 25 years old, 6-foot-1 and wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and tan pants. The second suspect is described as a black male, 20 to 25 years old, 5-foot-1 and wearing dark clothing.

Iraqi PM says ISIS plans attacks on US subways No evidence. Haider al-Abadi’s comments were met with surprise and skepticism by US security officials.
Iraq has received “credible” intelligence that Islamic State militants plan to attack subway systems in Paris and the United States, Iraq’s prime minister said on Thursday, but U.S. and French officials said they had no evidence to back up the claim.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said he had received the information Thursday morning from militants captured in Iraq and concluded it was credible after asking for further details. The attacks, he said, were plotted from inside Iraq by “networks” of the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL. “I asked for more credible information. I asked for names. I asked for details, for cities, you know, dates. And from the details I have received, yes, it looks credible,” Abadi told a small group of reporters while in New York for the meeting of

No information confirming Ben Rhodes, a deputy national security adviser to U.S. President Barack Obama, said the United States had “not confirmed any specific threat.” “What we’ve consistently said to the Iraqis is if they have information that is relevant to terrorist activity or terrorist plotting, that they can and should share that through our intelligence and law enforcement challenges,” Rhodes told reporters traveling with Obama on Air Force One from New York. French security services also said they had no information confirming Abadi’s statement. REUTERS
HEAR NO EVIL FROM OPPOSITION Amid the news of air strikes, coffee salutes and elbowing at the U.N. buffet this week, I spotted a headline from Bloomberg View about “partyism” now being the big divider in our society trumping racism, religion or damn-nearanything else. At first I took this as a good thing. “After all,” I told my wife, “wouldn’t it be better if we all loved hot wings, cold beer and balloons more than wearing bed sheets and toting torches? I’m going to grab the cooler and some Japanese lanterns from the basement.” “Hold on,” Linda said, reading more closely. “It’s a different kind of partyism.” Turns out the article was pushing the idea that nothing makes one American more suspicious of an-
other these days than the political flag the “other” flies. A Dem would rather see his daughter marry a fang-bearing creature of the night than a Repub. A Repub would rather see her son whisked away by aliens with probes than carted off to a Dem barbecue. You get the picture. I’m not sure I buy it even in these hyperpartisan times. And if it is true, I’m not sure I like it. We’ve been working on our prejudices for so long, I hate to think that a lot of old favorites could be so easily shoved aside for a trendy new hatred. Still, as I think it over, maybe this could prove handy. “Imagine all the time we can save if we let this type of intolerance run amok,” I told Linda. “No more tedious political
debates in which you might risk hearing a good idea from the other side. No more hours wasted considering contrary opinions. No more Thanksgiving dinners ruined by crazy cousin Hank and his conspiracy theories.” “Yeah?” she said. “You know we’re already kind of approaching our politics that way, and look how it is working out. Gridlock. Mistrust. Frankly, I think if someone doesn’t listen to opposing views on a pretty regular basis, they are the very definition of intolerance and ignorance.” She’s funny that way. I’d better be careful. She’s starting to make sense.

As digital assistants — apps, wearable gadgets and smart devices such as Vessyl — are entrusted with more and more personal data, quantifying steps, heart rate and hours slept, StartUp Health president Unity Stokes sees the field of medicine beginning to resemble Silicon Valley. “We believe that it’s going to be the entrepreneurs, innovators, the doctopreneurs that are going to reinvent health care,” he says. Driving the rise of small companies in the medical field is the end of one-size-fits-all treatments. “I think for many years, people have been binned into broad categories,” Stokes says. “But now, new technologies are enabling us to really be treated as individuals, to understand your health on a personal level.” These technologies are giving people a more complete picture of their well-being — and changing doctors’ role. Stokes gives us a preview of the trends in health care.

You’ll start to see a lot more care being done in your home — imagine being able to do an ultrasound from your iPhone or your tablet right from the comfort of your own home, and then beam that image to your doctor,” Stokes says, adding that accessing your health information should be as easy as getting a car with Uber.

Besides genome mapping, another important area of focus will be to decipher our personal microbiomes to “understand what’s going on in the ecosystem inside of you,” says Stokes. Gut bacteria, whether they’re absent or the wrong strain, have been tied to health issues including mood disorders and obesity. Scientists are looking at how food and sleep influence these colonies and the extent of their health effects.
Wearables are just the start Health reflects lifestyle, and objective data on nutrition, sleep and exercise is crucial for an accurate profile. “We’re going to start to see health and wellness being integrated into every aspect of our lives, oftentimes in invisible ways, whether that’s designed into your refrigerator, your car seat or your phone,” says Stokes.
Better habits by design Innovation is not always about making something new but rethinking what we’re already using. “[Engineers] can start with simple design: How is a refrigerator designed to make sure you eat the healthiest foods first? And then you can do all sorts of high-tech things: Put sensors in there to track what you’re eating and how frequently, and correlate that with how you’re feeling and how you’re sleeping every day.” EVA KIS @thisiskis eva.kis@metro.us

From left, Colin Jost, Cecily Strong and Kate McKinnon bring the laughs on Weekend Update. “Saturday Night Live” premieres on Saturday at 11:30 p.m. on NBC. / DANA EDELSON, NBC
‘Icing on the cake’
As “Saturday Night Live” begins its 40th season, we celebrate with choice quotes from the new edition of the “Live From New York” book by James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales. The authors spoke with nearly every living cast member for a 2004 edition, and over the past decade they collected new anecdotes from those same people as well as from many of the current cast members, who we’re profiling here. One common thread runs through the narrative: It’s intense!
Sasheer Zamata “I knew there was going to be craziness. My phone blew up when there was news I was auditioning. ... And then when I got it — much more: 300 text messages.”
Colin Jost “There’s a lot more anxiety in being the head writer. You feel a responsibility for the show. ... It changes from being a really fun job to being a challenging and stressful job.”
Vanessa Bayer “No matter what the setup of the cast is, people will always have an opinion of what it should be. ... What people think about ‘SNL,’ they feel a lot of ownership over it. It’s like a sports team.”
Bobby Moynihan “I’ll stay here as long as they’ll have me. This was my dream, and I should be thinking more about the future ... but ... when I walk out this door, I want to be able to say to myself, ‘You did what you wanted to do.’”
Kenan Thompson “I can’t even watch the show the same way now. ... It’s crazy to imagine your picture at some point in that long line of head shots that we have up there on the wall.”
Cecily Strong “Every time I have a meeting with Lorne, I assume I’m getting fired. It’s like seeing a doctor and you assume they’re going to tell you that you have AIDS, even if it’s a dentist.”
Jay Pharoah
Aidy Bryant
“You’ll have a role here that’s not really funny — you’re being a team player and everything’s about being a team player. In everything. That’s how people get to the Super Bowl.”
“People immediately, when you have gone through being on ‘SNL,’ even for — I’ve only been here for two years and yet I feel like people within the industry are, like, really impressed by that and take you seriously.”
Taran Killam “My first season or two there was a Huffington Post article that ranked cast members on a weekly basis. They had their own algorithm of screen time — who did what, what is the best sketch — and I was the worst. I was just the worst! It’s a dangerous pitfall. With a 40-year history, there’s so much to compare yourself to. The shadow grows longer and darker the longer the show goes on. Now we’re not just compared to the original ’75 cast, we’re compared to six generations, versus the people who came before were compared to five.” PAT HEALY @metrousmusic pat.healy@metro.us
For the long haul
Kate McKinnon “In my mind, this is my last job. I am preparing for that being the reality. Obviously, I hope that I have a long career because I would feel bad if I couldn’t work. Anything else beyond this would be icing on the cake.”

There are a lot of flashy names and choice nabs coming to the 52nd annual New York Film Festival. But don’t let that distract you from the truth: NYFF has always been, and hopefully always will be, a time for adventurous, sometimes punishing though also sometimes fun cinema. The three-week battering ram brings untold famous faces, both at home and abroad, to Manhattan, as well as a fake one-shot dramedy, a 3-D movie from one of film’s legends and an allegedly stunning performance from KStew. Arguably NYFF’s biggest world premiere is “Gone Girl,” which finds director David Fincher again lending his exacting, borderline OCD (and sometimes just OCD) style to bear on a mega-bestseller. Along with newbies from Jean-Luc Godard (the 3-D “Goodbye to Language”) and Mike Leigh (the “Mr. Turner”), it has “The Clouds of Sils Maria,” which pairs handheld master Olivier Assayas (“Summer Hours”) with Kristen Stewart, who has received raves as the assistant to a famous actress (played by
suspected of foul play with his AWOL wife (Rosamund Pike), is as funny as it is twisty, and Fincher may prove to be even better than Flynn (who wrote the screenplay) at making this more about marriage, not just twists. The other giant debut is “Inherent Vice,” in which Paul Thomas Anderson tries to beat a typically sprawling, goofy Thom-

There’s also the latest from South Korea’s Hong Sang-soo (“Hill of Freedom”), plus a documentary about The New York Times Book Review (“The 50 Year Argument”) comade by Martin Scorsese.

There are about 40 types of human papillomavirus (HPV) that may affect an estimated 75% to 80% of males and females in their lifetime. For most, HPV will clear on its own. However, there’s no way to predict who will and won’t clear the virus. For those who don’t clear certain types, HPV could cause cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers in females and anal cancer and genital warts in both males and females. The CDC recommends routine vaccination for boys and girls ages 11 or 12 against HPV-related cancer and diseases. GARDASIL® [Human Papillomavirus Quadrivalent (Types 6, 11, 16, and 18) Vaccine, Recombinant] is the only HPV vaccine that helps protect against 4 types of HPV. In girls and young women ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against 2 types of HPV that cause about 75% of cervical cancer cases, 70% of vaginal cancer cases, and up to 50% of vulvar cancer cases. In males and females ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against about 80% of anal cancer cases and about 90% of genital warts cases.
THE CDC RECOMMENDS ROUTINE VACCINATION OF 11 OR 12 YEAR OLDS AGAINST HPV-RELATED CANCER AND DISEASES. THE TIME TO PROTECT THEM IS BEFORE EXPOSURE TO THE VIRUS.
GARDASIL may not fully protect everyone, nor will it protect against diseases caused by other HPV types or against diseases not caused by HPV. GARDASIL does not prevent all types of cervical cancer, so it’s important for women to continue routine cervical cancer screenings. GARDASIL does not treat cancer or genital warts. GARDASIL is given as 3 injections over 6 months.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION Anyone who is allergic to the ingredients of GARDASIL, including those severely allergic to yeast, should not receive the vaccine. GARDASIL is not for women who are pregnant. The side effects include pain, swelling, itching, bruising, and redness at the injection site, headache, fever, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and fainting. Fainting can happen after getting GARDASIL. Sometimes people who faint can fall and hurt themselves. For this reason, your child’s health care professional may ask your child to sit or lie down for 15 minutes after he or she gets GARDASIL. Some people who faint might shake or become stiff. This may require evaluation or treatment by your child’s health care professional. Only a doctor or health care professional can decide if GARDASIL is right for your son or daughter.

Pop quiz: Which movie where Denzel Washington kills a lot of people is this from? / SCOTT GARFIELD
What was once a weekly ’80s TV show about a loner (Edward Woodward) helping out those in trouble is now a straight-up vigilante movie for Denzel Washington, where his Special Forces he-man-turnedhardware-store-employee takes on the Russian mob. The lowdown: Though a movie version of an old show, “The Equalizer is really more of a remake of another movie where
Washington plowed through a powerful crime organization after they hurt a young girl. In 2004’s “Man on Fire, it was Dakota Fanning; here, it’s Chloe Grace Moretz, as a prostitute for the Russian mob. But where “Fire was phantasmagorically unpleasant, “The Equalizer is unnecessarily funereal. Washington previously teamed with director Antoine Fuqua on “Training Day. The latter seems to think this

Washington’s avenger is closer to Scarlett Johansson in “Lucyâ€?: an untouchable superhero, or at least one who can always ďŹ nd a “MacGyverâ€?-esque way to cauterize a wound. Washington is reliably eccentric, but only hammy Marton Csokas, as an intensely quiet, tattooed psycho maďŹ a enforcer, gets that this is silly. MATT PRIGGE

Imelda Staunton can’t resist Dominic West in “Pride.
The lowdown: Cinema from the ’90s teemed with earnest gay rights dramas: tales of coming out and battling homophobia. As society has grown increasingly tolerant, those have largely disappeared. That makes “Pride a double retro piece, looking back on when activists were really up against it and during a bygone era of cinema. The tired cliches of old now go down like comfort food. Of course, few back then were as rousing as “Pride, or
as tough. From the swaggering head of the gay rights organization (Ben Schnetzer) to the snarling old guard (Dominic West), no one asks for pity, soldiering through on enacting change. It leans a little too hard on the sight of small-town biddies (Imelda Staunton among them) giddily embracing S&M clubs and porn mags, but even those add to the rousing mix of anger and warmth. NICOLA DOVE
Laika, the mordant stop-motion animation team that made “Coraline and “ParaNorman, match Dickens with monsters for their latest, about a hilly English town whose denizens worry about underground trolls who, of course, are perfectly harmless. The lowdown: Any stopmotion factory has to be judged against Aardman, the relentlessly clever team responsible for “Wallace and Gromit. Laika aren’t as good, but they are more morbid, nearly as clever and, in the case of “The Boxtrolls, at least as excessively English. The jokes don’t come terribly fast, but the mood teeters between dark and funny, with just enough

Theater. MCC aims straight for the funny bone with “The Money Shot.” It would be amazing if Neil LaBute’s newest play were turned into a movie. That’s because “The Money Shot” should be available anytime to anyone who needs a good hard laugh. But it only plays the Lucille Lortel Theatre through Oct. 19 — so be sure to secure your ticket now for almost two hours of easily digestible, very memorable absurdity. In this comedy, Steve (Fred Weller) is a Tom Cruise type who hasn’t had a box office hit in a few years. But he has the opportunity to helm an upcoming action flick alongside Karen (Elizabeth Reaser), a wannabe Gwyneth Paltrow who figures she’d still be relevant if she hadn’t come out of the closet. Fearing irrelevance, the two buy into a gimmick to have real sex while shooting the film, assuming people will pay big bucks to see two former sensations going at it. Naturally, the narcissistic movie stars invite their If you go

significant others to dinner so that everyone can talk about logistics. (Yes, they are self-centered enough to hope the response will be, “Enjoy yourselves, pass the tapas!”) Steve’s wife Missy (Gia Crovatin) is a ditzy blonde who longs to be a leading lady but lacks the talent. Karen’s partner is Bev (Callie Thorne), a know-it-all athlete who has never been with a man and doesn’t understand the appeal. Hard lines are drawn while the pairs suss out what’s allowed, what’s off-limits and why they’re even still together. The whole play is a springboard for lampooning every kind of Hollywood stereotype; it doesn’t break new ground, but it isn’t meant to be grounded. Like its characters, it has a lot to say but is never too deep. As the title would suggest, it’s also fairly graphic. And it’s a limit-pushing riot that keeps ramping up the ridiculousness every time you think you’re at an apex. That’s the point: How do you keep outdoing yourself? Comedy becomes cartoon, sex icon turns porn star. “The Money Shot” wholly embodies its message of incessant artlessness, over-the-top antics and attention-seeking insecurity. If it ever hinted that it was taking itself seriously, the play would go from hilarious to derivative. But that only happens on cue, at the end, when “The Money Shot” hits its mark. T. Lohan again tried serious acting, and everyone laughed
1
Depending on who you ask, Lindsay Lohan either had a wonderful or terrible first night in her West End stage debut. Previews started this week of David Mamet’s “Speed-the-Plow,” and the first review, from the Daily Beast, is not kind. “On the first night of previews, a work-in-progress feel is to be expected,” Nico Hines writes. “But halfway through the second act of ‘Speedthe-Plow,’ the audience was openly laughing at Lohan’s struggle to grasp Mamet’s sharp, trademark dialogue.” Some audience members had fun with the gaffes, like Rafay Agha, who tweeted, “Major kudos to the woman who was feeding Lindsay Lohan

her lines from offstage.” But a tweet from one of her fans tells a different story. “According to all attendees of [‘Speed-thePlow’], Lindsay Lohan owned her part. As if
doubt were plausible,” writes Peyton Pittman. I just don’t know who to believe anymore. Maybe Lohan didn’t have time to learn her lines because she’s too busy pitching new projects. “I was with Tina Fey the other day and I said we should do another ‘Mean Girls,’ like an older version where they’re all housewives and they’re all cheating,” she recently told Time Out London. “That would be really funny. I’ll harass Tina to write it.” Wait, doesn’t Lohan know that there already was a “Mean Girls 2”? We’d say that she, like the rest of us, is just acting like it never happened — but then she’d have to know how to act.

David Bowie used to get it on in a fur-lined pit Turns out the compulsion to make everything fur-lined in the 1970s was about function as much as form — at least at David Bowie’s place. According to a new biography by Wendy Leigh, Bowie and his then-wife, Angela, had a 4-foot-deep, fur-lined play area dubbed “the pit” in their London flat,
and it was used for some spectacular sex. The Bowies “used to have the most amazing orgies at Oakley Street. Everybody f—ing everybody in the pit,” Leigh writes. “Mick Jagger used to come.” While we may not have known fur playpens were a fixture of a ’70s orgy, come on — Jagger was a given.

What women really want (in a kiss) Studies have shown that a woman discovers everything she needs to know about a potential lover from the very first kiss, and any guy who has tried to get to first base on a date knows it. Interestingly, it’s not just humans who show affection this way. Bonobo chimpanzees kiss on the lips, elephants put their trunks in each other’s mouths and foxes lick each other’s faces — all as signs of affection. More than half of all people experience their first real kiss by the time they’re 14 years old, but more often than not it isn’t the same as our teenage dreams.
As adults, it can’t hurt to know a little bit more about the mechanics of kissing. Here are some interesting bits about one of our favorite activities: • Kissing is exercise: When we kiss, our hearts beat faster and our breathing becomes deeper, mimicking the way our bodies react to exercise. If done with passion, a 60-second kiss burns more than 50 calories. • Kissing raises selfesteem: Kissing sends signals to our brain to produce hormones that makes us feel good. And it’s no surprise that one kiss leads to another.

So, what’s the secret to a romantic kiss that will knock her proverbial socks off? After interviewing over 500 women, there are some very common threads of what is wanted and not wanted:
Do’s • Start gently. Let your mouth wander, but pay attention to your partner’s reactions and act accordingly. • Light strokes on the cheekbones, neck and back get extra points, as these areas are usually ignored. • Timing is everything. Start slowly, and stay slow enough to watch for signs that encourage more rapid movement and advances.
Don’ts • “Sloppy, wet and all over the place.” • “His tongue all the way down my throat.” • “He shouldn’t think that a kiss is the precursor to me giving him oral sex.” • “Don’t lick my mouth.” • “What’s up with fast jaw movements? I’m not trying to be chewed on.”

Sex and the single parent
A baby may not ruin your dating life after all Ask any single parent and they’ll probably tell you that balancing a social life and child-rearing is difficult, to say the least. But a new study suggests that the single moms and dads out there are still finding time for love. The Kinsey Institute, the think tank devoted to researching sex and gender, has just released a new report on the sex lives of single parents. While it’s a common misconception that single parents are either too stressed out or too busy to have sex very often, the researchers found that the moms and dads of small children are getting busy as often as single adults without children. Interestingly, the single parents of kids under 5 also have more sex than single parents with older children. “Singles have relatively less sexual activity than coupled people — singles tend to have lower rates of sexual frequency likely

because they have to first find a partner to have sex with,” Justin R. Garcia, one of the study’s co-authors, says in a statement. “And, for single parents, there is only so much time and so much energy to be used for a variety of competing demands in their life. Without the help of a partner, singles often have to divert more energy to parenting — so in theory, one might think single parents would not be dating as much. But that’s not what we found.” LAKSHMI GANDHI

Some real dating advice Re: ‘Learn to craft the perfect online dating message’ (Metro.us) I have to say it: Do they give every yokel a book deal now? I’ve been in a relationship with someone I met on the Internet for almost six years now, we’re getting married next month. Literally every single “tip” this girl has suggested is not only something I did not do, it’s something I would never do. You want to know how to get drugged, raped, murdered, etc. as fast as possible? Go on a date with someone you’ve only exchanged one email with. Oh, and I know we live in this crazy technological world, but I think I missed the day when texts became “intimate.” And
the whole “I like tennis, do you play professionally?” line? Sounds like that 90-year-old guy from the eHarmony commercials. My advice? Be yourself, not a badly written Hallmark card. Always meet in a public place — but you should probably talk for more than 30 seconds before you agree to do that. Of course text. Texting isn’t intimate unless you’re sending naked pics or talking dirty. She’s right about not taking it personally — but she neglects to point out you should probably move on because more than likely the person you’re trying to talk to is talking to others. Nets buy out Frank No more reports are necessary. The Nets announced Thursday they’d come to an agreement on a buy out of assistant coach Lawrence Frank, who’d been relegated to filing reports on upcoming opponents midway through last season. Frank will join the Clippers as an assistant coach. Frank was brought on as a veteran assistant for Jason Kidd, but the two did not see eye-to-eye. Of course, Kidd left himself this offseason to take the head job in Milwaukee.

Jeter puts perfect bow on end of home career MLB. The Yankee captain knocked in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth of his final home game.
The chants of “Thank you Jeter” started in the bleachers and filtered through a sellout crowd of 48,613 fans all too familiar with seeing the heroics of the Yankee captain. So of course Derek Jeter came up with an opportunity to get the game-winning hit in his final appearance at Yankee Stadium. Jeter did not waste any time slapping the first pitch of his final atbat into right field for the game-winning single that gave the fans one more thrill and a 6-5 victory over the Orioles. “These last few weeks have been very difficult and it’s gotten more and more difficult as we’ve gotten to the end,” Jeter said. “There was a couple of times where I almost lost it. I really thought I was going to break down, out-of-body experience is the best way to put it.” After getting mobbed by his teammates, Jeter

tipped his cap to acknowledge the crowd as he walked out to shortstop. He kneeled and said a quick prayer at the position he occupied for 20 years. He was joined on the field by former manager Joe Torre and former teammates Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, Bernie Williams, Tino Martinez and Andy Pettitte as the Orioles applauded from the top of the step of the dugout.

“I’ve lived a dream since I was 4 or 5 years old,” Jeter said. “Now that dream is over.” And while the walk-off win seemed to be a perfect way to ride into the sunset, Jeter said after the game he plans to play as a designated hitter on the Yankees’ final road trip to Boston. Giants cruise to easy win over Redskins Watch online
Find video and recap of Thursday night’s Giants-Redskins game at: Metro.us/sports.
The Giants are suddenly an unstoppable offensive machine. The rejuvenated Big Blue took down Washington, 45-14, Thursday night despite a short week of preparation. Metro breaks down three things that went right as the Giants improved to .500 on the season.
1
Super secondary It would be easy to say Kirk Cousins was careless and inexperienced at
catches and 37 yards combined Thursday.

quarterback, but he was brilliant last week in throwing for nearly 400 yards against Philadelphia. Really it was just a superb performance by the secondary, specifi-
cally Prince Amukamara and Dominique RodgersCromartie. Redskins receivers DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon each had 100 yards last week. They were held to three
Turn it over Part of the dominance of that secondary was in creating turnovers. The Giants had none through the first two weeks and after getting off zero last week, they had six more Thursday. Cousins threw four picks and fumbled once as he looked completely out of sorts. The Giants were plus-5 in the turnover margin and even the only interception Eli Manning threw was a fluke, with Rueben Randle being hit in the end zone and losing the ball on what was essentially a catch.
3
Up the coast Remember when the West Coast offense was a terrible decision and Manning could never play in it? It was about 10 days ago. So much for that idea. Manning looks born to play in Ben McAdoo’s West Coast offense all of a sudden. The veteran finished 28-of-39 (71.7 percent) for 300 yards and four touchdowns. The West Coast offense has always been known as tight end friendly, and Larry Donnell and Daniel Fells are benefitting from it. Donnell caught three touchdown passes, while Fells caught one for a second straight week. MARK OSBORNE

Stories to watch as Jets host the Lions
NFL. The Jets face another tough NFC North foe after losing back-to-back games against the Bears and Packers.
The Jets have to bounce back quickly following a 27-19 loss to the Bears on Monday night. It won’t be an easy task to play a second straight home game against a team with legitimate playoff aspirations, and the Jets could really use a win following two straight losses in tight games. The Monday night loss to Chicago was also the second consecutive loss to an NFC North team and they will face a Lions team coming off a high from last week. They put

Quarterback Geno Smith had two poor interceptions in last week’s prime time loss to the Bears — one of which was a first quarter pick-six that put the Jets in an early hole they would never come back from. Smith must bounce back with safe, smart and efficient football against Detroit. The turnovers have to go, which is something the Jets have preaching since last season. If his decision making doesn’t improve, then an undue burden will be placed on the defense and they can only keep

Ground and pound again The ground game, currently third in the NFL, was always going to be a strength of the Jets. But the offseason addition of Chris Johnson hasn’t paid off in dividends like expected. Instead, the load has been carried by Chris Ivory. Early in the week leading up to the Lions game, head coach Rex Ryan said he expects to give Ivory more carries in response to his strong start to the season. What he wasn’t saying
was that Ivory’s workload would far outweigh Johnson and fellow running back Bilal Powell. “I guess what I was saying is I recognize the fact that this guy’s running hard, and if that’s the case then we can definitely see him carrying the ball a little more,” Ryan said. “But again, we think we have three backs, three really capable backs.” Surprisingly, Powell has just seven carries this year but is averaging 4.7 yards a pop. He’s also a capable receiver out of the backfield, with 36 catches last season. The Jets might want to explore using him a little bit more out of the backfield to balance out the offense.

in a very solid performance on both sides on the ball this past Sunday, beating the Packers at home. The Jets lost to Green Bay in Week 2. The Jets have a legitimate chance to win if their secondary holds up and the offense, specifically Geno Smith, limits turnovers. They will also need to get lucky on the injury front with Dee Milliner and Eric Decker as question marks heading into the weekend. Metro takes a look at three storylines to watch for as the Jets take on the 2-1 Lions this Sunday (1 p.m., Fox).

the Jets in the game for so long. “I am always going to be a little mad after a game,” Smith said. “Understanding the big picture, we have a short week, quick turnaround, [and] I can’t harp on that for too long.” What he must do is not just see and understand his mistakes but also translate that onto the field. “In the heat of the moment, you’re out there playing and you want to be natural,” Smith said of playing not to make mistakes. “Coaches will tell you that you always have to play natural and be yourself because that is what got you here. Situational football is ... something that we harp on, we key on.”

The Jets will face a very tough test in the Lions defense. The high-octane Packers offense managed just 233 yards of total offense against Detroit last week, with quarterback Aaron Rodgers limited to 162 yards and one touchdown. For comparison sake, Rodgers threw for 346 yards and three touchdowns in Week 2 against the Jets. Lions head coach Jim Caldwell credited his team’s depth and pass rush in limiting the Packers’ quarterback. “In terms of the guys that played, the entire defense played well last week,” Caldwell said.

REX RYAN HAS COMPARED NDAMUKONG SUH TO WARREN SAPP.
“But, just like anything else, last week was last week. We’re on to a new week and we are faced with an even greater challenge.” The Jets come into Week 4 with the No. 18 passing offense. While that is a significant improvement from this time last year, it is still a unit that is rather ordinary at times. It’s a matchup that doesn’t bode well for the Jets.
Decker hopes to play game against Lions Jets wide receiver Eric Decker was at least able to get on the field at practice on Thursday, a sign that perhaps his injured hamstring is finally getting better. Decker, who left the Jets’ Monday night loss in the second quarter with a hamstring injury, did not practice on Wednesday but did some drills with the wide receivers on Thursday. His return would be a huge boost for a rather ordinary passing offense. “It felt good. It felt a lot better than last week. Felt a lot better than the beginning of this week,” Decker said. “I’m happy with my progression, happy with where I’m at right now. I’m planning on getting out there [Sunday]. I can’t promise anything but obviously I’m being on the positive side. I’ll be out there.” The not-so-encouraging news is about Dee Milliner, who did not practice on Thursday and head coach Rex Ryan sounded less than optimistic his top cornerback will play this weekend.
