Teen pleads not guilty in Snapchat sexual assault Saugus. Two other teens are also being held on charges related to the incident. The Saugus 19-year-old who is facing a slew of charges for allegedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old behind an elementary school -— a crime that was posted on Snapchat — was ordered held without bail on Monday. Rashad Deihim was arraigned on charges of assault with intent to rape, kidnapping, indecent assault and battery on a person age 14 or older, and posing or exhibiting a child in a sexual act in Lynn District Court. Deihim, who pleaded not guilty, had turned himself into police in Newburyport over the weekend, after police had put out an all-pointsbulletin describing him as a skinny man of average height who was dangerous and may
be trying to flee the state. Authorities say Deihim, along with a 17-year-old male and Kailyn Bonia, 18, assaulted the victim in a wooded area behind an elementary school in Saugus on Sept. 3. Bonia is currently being held without bail at the women’s prison in Framingham. The 17-yearold, who is being charged as a minor and whose identity is therefore being withheld, allegedly recorded the incident and posted it on Snapchat. Police found the victim naked in the bushes upon arriving at the scene of the crime, according to the Essex County DA’s office. The victim’s mother has said her daughter was drugged before being sexually assaulted. The DA’s office said she was “definitely under the influence of something” but could not say what, pending toxicology results.

Authorities: Assault was posted on Snapchat The 17-year-old male who allegedly recorded the assault and posted it on Snapchat is facing a charge of disseminating child pornography in addition to the charges of sexual assault and kidnapping. Snapchat is a social media app where users can briefly share images and video. The Essex County District Attorney’s office confirmed to Metro that the video “showed that girl being sexually assaulted.” The Snapchat video was seen by an acquaintance of the victim, who then notified her father. He then contacted police.

City Council shelves talk of $25K raise
Calls to Linehan’s office were not returned as of press time. NICOLAUS NICOLAUS CZARNECKI, METRO
A Boston City Council committee on Monday delayed action on a proposed ordinance that would give councilors a 29 percent raise because, according to a city attorney, doing so would be illegal. City Council President Bill Linehan has proposed boosting council pay by $25,000, from $87,500 to $112,500. State ethics law prohibits government officials from voting on matters in which they or their families have a
financial interest, the city’s assistant corporation counsel Henry Luthin said at a public hearing where the council’s Government Operations Committee was poised to discuss the issue. However, Staff Counsel Christine O’Donnell said the mayor and the council have the authority to make salary recommendations, and have amended the ordinance that determines councilor salary “from time to time.”
The 13-member panel last received a raise in 2006. The Associated Press cited a 2013 city survey that found Boston’s councilor pay was higher than the pay in most Massachusetts cities. Linehan’s proposed pay raise would bump up Boston councilor salaries closer to major metropolises like Washington, D.C., which pays $125,583, Chicago, which pays $116,674 and New York, which pays $112,500. Hub students get boost from crowdfunding Boston. Could the Internet be the future college fund? With student loan debt in the United States exceeding $1.2 trillion, it should come as no shock that students are turning to unconventional ways like online crowdfunding to pay their college tuition. What may come as a surprise, however, is that they are actually able to raise a good amount of cash from people who might not otherwise send a dime their way if asked in person.
New England Eye Center, affiliated with Tufts University School of Medicine, is offering patients advanced treatments for all aspects of vision care through 8 convenient locations in the Greater Boston area.
Visit Metro.us to hear BC and Emmanuel students’ take on crowdfunding tuition.
“You never know what you’re going to get until you ask,” said Rhyanne Lynch, a Boston University freshman who recently raised $7,600 on GoFundMe.com to put toward her $64,000 tuition. “I have a lot of friends on Facebook who I wouldn’t normally call and say, ‘Hey can you give me money?’ but I figured if I did it on GoFundMe it would be a little more innocent. I was shocked at how much I was given,” said Lynch, 18. GoFundMe is one of many crowdfunding sites to report an increase of education-focused campaigns in recent years. “More and more students are turning to GoFundMe to help pay for school,” said GoFundMe spokeswoman Kelsea Little. “College is becoming more difficult for students to pay for, and scholarships are becoming increasingly competitive. Crowdfunding for college costs offers a fresh alternative that anyone can take advantage of.” MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

High court to consider gay marriage cases
METRO IS THE #1 MOST READ NEWSPAPER IN BOSTON AMONG ADULTS 18-44. FOR ADVERTISING: adsboston@metro.us or 617-532-0100
The nine justices of the U.S. Supreme Court met behind closed doors on Monday to consider whether they should take up the hotly contested question of whether states can ban gay marriage. The court has seven cases pending before it concerning bans in ďŹ ve states: Virginia, Utah, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Indiana. If the court agrees to take one or more of the cases it has the chance to rule when, if ever, gay men and women in the 31 states that now bar them from marrying could get marriage licenses. An announcement on whether the court will hear the same-sex marriage dispute could come later this week. But given the weight of the controversy and that the justices only in recent weeks received the petitions, an announcement could come at a later point. REUTERS

The suspect, Omar Gonzalez, 42, was charged with unlawfully entering a restricted building or grounds while carrying a deadly or dangerous weapon. Gonzalez, a decorated Iraq War veteran, had been arrested in July with a sniper rifle and a map on which the executive mansion was marked, the prosecutor said. Oklahoma plans to file a murder charge against Alton Nolen, who is suspected of beheading a former co-worker at a food distribution center last week, officials said. The FBI is also looking into Nolen’s background for any potential religious ties to the attack after former colleagues said he had attempted to convert them to Islam. Police said Nolen had recently become a Muslim. Nolen, 30, is suspected of attacking two women shortly after being fired on Thursday at Vaughan Foods in Moore, a suburb of Oklahoma City, police said. Alton Nolen underwent surgery at a local hospital after being shot and was expected to survive, Moore Police said. Nolen had a nonviolent criminal record, including drug-related arrests, a jail escape and resisting police, authorities said. A group of Oklahoma lawmakers in the heavily Republican state issued a statement that suggested the attack might have been related to militant Islam and not sparked by a workplace dispute. “Unfortunately, jihadism is no longer confined to foreign soil. Signs the bull market could end soon I’ve made millions in the stock market being both bullish and bearish, but as the longevity of this most recent bull market continues, it’s difficult not to acknowledge signs that this bull market will end sooner rather than later.
No. 1: This bull market is long
We’ve been in this bull market for nearly double the amount of time as a normal bull market — and while it’s not the longest ever, the longer it goes on, the higher the odds are that it will come to an end soon. I held onto my first million during the
1999-2000 bubble by being cautious, unlike just about everyone else. Far too many people think they’re geniuses only because of this bull market. That’s dangerous, and us veterans know the stock market makes a habit out of humbling those whose egos have grown too much.
No. 2: ’Tis the season Most of the stock market crashes in the past have happened toward late September and during the month of October, so be prepared in case history repeats itself. Historically, the best performing months are

November through May. It sounds crazy, but during my 15 years in the stock market, I’ve definitely learned to respect this seasonality. The good news is crashes rarely happen out of the blue — terrorism aside — so there’s usually a few days or even weeks of gradual market fading leading up to big crashes. Just be on the lookout.
No. 3: Investors aren’t scared Despite market veterans like me calling for conservatism, most traders and investors forget the lessons of the past. With every

The risks they take pay off during long bull markets like this, which only reinforces the wrong lessons — something they don’t realize it until too late. Take it from me, the stock market is a great place to grow your savings and possibly even get rich. But those who earn too much too fast without regard to safety get burned badly when history repeats itself time and again.

and kids
Man of mystery Dunham only mentions her boyfriend Jack Antonoff — Fun.’s lead guitarist — in her book twice. The first is when she tells him about a traumatic sexual experience from her past. His response is both endearingly sweet and too graphic to print here. The other is when she mentions that they’ve envisioned having kids together. And that’s it for Antonoff.
How she feels about having kids “It’s time to get started now. And why not? I wonder. I have a job. I am in love. We have an extra bedroom that we are currently using for shoes, boxes and occasional guests. I am told my dog is unusually good with children. I already look f—ing pregnant. … But I resent them. They’re constancy, their intrusion on my relationship and free time and my naps and my imagination and my heart. They’ve come too soon, and I can’t do any of what I had planned. All I can do is survive.” EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence
emily.laurence@metro.us
We’re used to Lena Dunham baring it all. In interviews, on Twitter or on “Girls,” nothing seems to be too private for the 28-year-old to reveal. She hasn’t been “famous” for very long, but so much has been said about her that it’s difficult to imagine anything new emerging. Well, think again. “Not That Kind Of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s ‘Learned’” is Lena Dunham’s new book of personal essays, and it’s surprisingly, well, full of surprises. She addresses all the topics you not only expect but want her to (sex, getting naked on camera, friendship, body image and work) but in a way she hasn’t talked about in such length before. Here, we pull some of our favorite words of wisdom and revelations.
On dating jerks “When someone shows you how little you mean to them and you keep coming back for more, before you know it, you start to mean less to yourself. … Being treated like s— is not an amusing game or a transgressive intellectual experiment. It’s something you accept, condone and learn to believe you deserve.”
What nude scenes are really like to film “It’s f—ing weird. Yes, it’s a job, but most people’s jobs don’t consist of slamming your vagina against the flaccid, nylon-wrapped penis of a guy wearing massive amounts of foundation to conceal his assne.”
Why she tried veganism “While my veganism began as a deeply felt moral position, it soon morphed into a not-very-effective eating disorder. I never thought of it as a diet, but it was a way to limit the vast world of food that I had once loved so dearly.”
On growing up “I thought I would marry my boyfriend and grow old and sick of him. I thought I would keep my friends, and we’d make different, new memories. None of that happened. Better things happened. Then why am I so sad?”

Steven Soderbergh retired from movies last year, but he’s rarely been busier. Along with Singani 63, his new line of tasty/drunk-making Bolivian brandy, the director is killing it on “The Knick,” his Cinemax show about an old-timey NYC hospital. And then last week he surprised the Internet by unleashing, on his personal site, a redo of “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” which takes Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones romp and strips it of its soundtrack. It’s purely for educational purposes: Soderbergh wants viewers to ignore the dialogue and focus entirely on the imagery. Chiefly, he wants you to think about the selection of shots: why each one is there, how they convey basic narrative information, how the cuts create a visual rhythm. In fact, not only has he made “Raiders” a silent film; he’s made it black and white, just so it seems even more alien. (And,
STREAM THIS Matt Prigge’s guide to what you can watch on the Internet. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge matt.prigge @metro.us
as he rightly notes himself, in black-and-white it looks a beaut.) Because Soderbergh chose one of the 10 or so most popular and watched films ever to make his point, there’s even a chance that more than nerds may take note. And while you’re on his site, buy his booze.

Speaking of visually stunning works, the second film by Richard Ayoade — best known as the afro’d Maurice Moss on “The IT Crowd” — is a grimy eyesore. Loosely based on the novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky, it depicts the grungy
purgatory of a shy clerk (Jesse Eisenberg) who suddenly finds himself working with a more charismatic, possibly evil doppelganger (also Eisenberg). Ayoade has obviously watched “Brazil” a lot, but its retro future is uniquely grungy, while Ayoade’s camera delights in shifting at odd moments, just to throw us off.

Antoine Fuqua could kill you with a butter knife
News in brief
ROBERT DOWNEY JR.
Interview. The director of “The Equalizer” knows how to hurt you (but he won’t).
GETTY IMAGES
The third ‘Avengers’ may be the latest to be split up (or not) First it was the final “Harry Potter,” then it was the final “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games” — could the third “Avengers” be the next franchise member to be split in two? The trend towards cutting productions in half — in order to tell more story and, of course, make more money — might wind up befalling Marvel’s largest behemoth, which is tentatively slated for a 2018 release. (Meanwhile there’s still a second “Avengers,” due next year, to contend with.) This might be just another case of wild Internet speculating; as Badass Digest has pointed out, a third part in two parts would mean redrafting contracts for the likes of Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, which means more money shelled out. But even their salaries are peanuts compared to what another “Avengers” could make. The first one sucked up $1.5 billion worldwide! MATT PRIGGE

“TRAINING DAY” DIRECTOR ANTOINE FUQUA REUNITED WITH DENZEL WASHINGTON FOR “THE EQUALIZER.” WIREIMAGE
It’s amazing what you can get done with the right tools. In “The Equalizer,” Denzel Washington takes on a team of Russian mobsters inside a Home Depot-like store using only what’s available on the shelves. So when he was designing the climactic battle, director Antoine Fuqua learned quite a bit about what makes a handy weapon. “Now in my brain, everything’s a weapon. You can do some interesting things if you think of it that way,” Fuqua says. “I went through the store with some stunt guys and a friend of mine who is a special

Let’s kill something In “The Equalizer,” Denzel Washington’s character is retired from special ops and now works at a massive hardware store (it looks like Home Depot, but in the film it’s called Home Mart). So did Fuqua and company try to get the real deal involved? “I’m sure they did [reach out to Home Depot]; I’m sure the producers did. I’m not a part of that,” Fuqua
says. “I’m sure they did, but I knew Home Depot wouldn’t. They should have, though. It would’ve been cool for them, but there are other stockholders involved, probably, who said, ‘Hell, no!’” Fuqua sees Home Depot’s slogan, “Let’s build something,” as a missed opportunity. By tying in with “The Equalizer,” they could be using “Let’s blow some s— up!” instead, he points out.
individual, let’s say, who knows how to do these things.” When it comes to a topic like this, there’s nothing better than a hands-on demonstration, which Fuqua happily provides using a butter knife lying around the hotel suite where we meet. “Cut off the blade and you’ve still got a weapon. It doesn’t make a difference; if somebody knows how to do it, they know how to do it,” he says. “They’re going to use your festival badge lanyard and choke you with it.” NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

European vacation: Is it better to take a cruise or fly across the continent? Trip. Weigh your options of how best to see Europe — by land or by sea.
The ports: Say you’re taking a Baltic Sea cruise, and the itinerary includes Berlin. But the port is actually in Warnemünde, almost two hours by train. Think you’re going to Rome? If you’re traveling on Royal Caribbean, Carnival or Norwegian, the ships dock in Civitavecchia, almost an hour from the city of seven hills.
Is taking to the seas the best way to explore Europe? We look at the pros and cons of boarding a cruise ship.
Three reasons to cruise Europe
Food frustration: Eating
City-hopping: If you want to pack in as much as possible, you can’t beat waking up every morning in a different country. Many cruises are 10 to 14 days; you’ll cover a lot of ground and the ship’s staff helps plan the best way to sightsee.
Octopuses hang on a boat in Mykonos, Greece.

A new twist on an old classic Actor turned author. Oscar-winner Emma Thompson has written her third Peter Rabbit story.
Emma Thompson has done her fair share of children’s storytelling through film. Now, she’s exploring that passion through children’s books. Thompson’s latest project has been expanding Beatrix Potter’s beloved Peter Rabbit stories, which she was invited to do in a letter from “Peter” himself. She started writing the stories a few years ago (they’re “inspired by” the original stories), and her latest effort, “The Spectacular Tale of Peter Rabbit,” comes out today. In it, Peter and Benjamin Bunny take a trip to the fair, with plenty of hijinks ensuing. Thompson took some time to share a few
Expert advice
What she thinks makes a great children’s book “A willingness to entertain the darkness in life. Obviously without making it too dark or too unpalatable, too close to what inevitably will be found out later in life. ... There are fears and there are dangers that we all have to face. thoughts about the world of Peter Rabbit.
Why she likes the Peter Rabbit series “I like his flawed qualities. I mean, he’s naughty, but within reason, and it’s the way in which he learns things. It’s so enchanting. There’s just nothing twee or whimsical

about Peter Rabbit or any of those books. The writing is so beautiful and specific and muscular and full of fantastic words. I learned so much from it when I was growing up.”
On why people write children’s literature “It seems to me, not to be too psychoanalytical about it, that many great children’s writers write things for the age that they were when they were wounded. It’s a form of self-soothing and because it’s absolutely necessary. Nobody writes unless

they have to, because it’s so hard to get it right. You have to address the part inside you that most needs to be heard.”
Why she decided to write the books “It’s a continuation of [Potter]’s spirit, I suppose, in some way, but it’s really for Peter. He was the one who wrote to me. He wrote me a letter saying, ‘Will you please write me another tale?’ I’d never have done it if I’d been asked in a less imaginative way. And I thought, why not have a go.”
Teen study. For girls, having a best friend comes with one crucial downside A best friend is something that every young girl hopes to find. It’s a special relationship full of inside jokes, conversations without words and crazy adventures. A best friend is your partner in crime, most loyal defender and is the one person who, without fail, provides you with a shoulder to lean on in times of trouble. Teenage girls also spend a great deal of time rehashing the negative aspects that occur on a daily basis with their best friends. Whether it’s in person, over the phone or typed out in a text, these young ladies not only discuss their problems, but they scrutinize them from every imaginable angle and sympathize together. Feeding off each other’s pessimistic feelings in this fashion is referred to as “corumination.” According to “Psychology Today,” it’s a problem. Even though it might seem like a healthy, positive release of
stress and anxiety to talk it out, it’s the amount of time that girls spend discussing their problems that can be detrimental to their emotional well-being. Amanda Rose and her colleagues at the University of Miami have been examining co-rumination for years. In the most current study, they discovered that girls who coruminated with a friend had a greater risk of developing symptoms of depression than girls who co-ruminated less. However, co-ruminating isn’t all bad. Rose found that it can have a positive effect on a friendship because it creates a stronger social bond. But despite all the warm fuzzy feelings, the threat of long-term depression still lingers. The remedy is simple: Teenage girls must find some sort of balance between complaining about their issues and utilizing active problem-solving strategies. MOLLY CONGDON
What you can do
Three tips Worried that your daughter might be in danger of this? Here are some steps you can take as a parent to prevent the potential symptoms of depression:
1
Talk about it Discuss how problem solving is a better way to deal with negative situations than talking about them at length.
2
Keep communication open If your daughter and her friend can’t come up with a solution, tell them to come to you for help.
3
Act out a solution Role play with your daughter about what to do when confronted with a possible problem, such as hearing an untrue rumor at school.

You should be thankful for this, because otherwise, North America would still be under a glacier and we would not be here to enjoy life as we do. All living things depend on oxygen. Plants supply that by taking the CO2 that all living things provide for plant survival. I know you’ll agree that animals, man included, survive in warm climates, rather than cold. Surprised you had not noticed. You may call Mother Nature anything you want, but you will not change her ways.
Yes, there is climate change, global warming, global cooling or whatever they’re calling it this week. It’s called, in layman’s terms, natural cycles. Since the Earth is not in a circular orbit around the sun, the distance changes cause climate changes. This has been so since the beginning of time, and when there were no man-made industries to influence nature.

Your comparing pedestrians’ behavior with cyclists is like saying that you shouldn’t stop robbing people because there are other people who commit fraud. AFC East QBs under fire E.J. Manuel has played in just 14 NFL games, but the Bills have apparently seen enough of the 16th overall pick of the 2013 draft (for now). Buffalo announced Monday that it would bench Manuel in favor of backup quarterback Kyle Orton. The Bills have dropped their last two games after a 2-0 start to the season. Meanwhile, fellow 2013 draft pick Geno Smith is feeling the heat in New York as many Jets fans want to replace the second-year quarterback with Michael Vick. But the Jets (1-3) announced Monday that Smith will continue to start.

Pats ripped apart, left in the KC dust NFL. The Patriots were dominated by the Chiefs on a national stage Monday night, falling 41-14. If Tom Brady’s tenure as quarterback of the Patriots truly is coming to a close in the not-so-distant future, Monday night’s 41-14 blowout loss to the Chiefs in Kansas City will likely be pointed to as the beginning of the end. The Chiefs took it to the Pats from the get-go, and by the second half found a way to make Brady look not only mortal, but downright bad. Kansas City intercepted Brady twice in the second half, including a pick-six, and backup Jimmy Garoppolo came into the game in relief of the future Hall of Famer at the 10:34 mark of the fourth quarter. Leading 17-0 at halftime, the Chiefs had already garnered 17 first downs and accumulated 303 yards of total offense compared to the Patriots’ 96 yards. Big Chiefs plays burned the Pats defense on several occasions early on. Knile Davis’ 48-yard run early in the second quarter allowed Jamaal Charles to score for the second time on the night as he took a 5-yard pass from Alex Smith into the end zone to give Kansas City a 14-0 lead. The Chiefs tacked on three points just prior to halftime, thanks mostly to a 33-yard Dwayne Bowe reception. The rushing combo of Davis and Charles had 121 yards on the ground at the half. The Patriots went a familiar three-and-out to start the second half but matters could actually have been much worse. Brady fumbled the ball on third down, under pressure, but New England somehow recovered. The Pats weren’t nearly as fortunate on their next drive as Tamba Hali blew by the Patriots offensive line to strip-sack Brady and force a turnover. Kansas City’s recovery of the New England fumble set up another easy score for

The Patriots finally put a sccore of their own on the board at the 3:26 mark of the third quarter as Brady hooked up with Brandon LaFell for a 44-yard touchdown. Rob Gronkowski would also score a garbage time touchdown, as Garoppolo threw a 13-yard strike. The road does not get easier for the Patriots as the undefeated Bengals (3-0) come to Gillette Stadium for a Sunday night showdown in five days. Krug and Smith finally back in the fold with B’s The Bruins beat the clock Monday, inking both defenseman Torey Krug and forward Reilly Smith to one-year deals with cap hits of $1.4 million each. The B’s open their 2014-15 season on Oct. 8 and the absences of Krug and Smith at training camp had plenty of fans worried. “It was definitely tough,” Smith told ESPN. “At times, you think you’re fighting a three-way battle. You’ve got your own ideas, your agent is advising how he probably should and they’ve been in the business a long time and that’s probably the advice you should take.” It was long known that Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli had been seeking a short-term solution for both players first before focusing on the longterm. “Throughout the process I explained to them that we have some challenges here cap-wise and it’s important for them to get here and play, and we’ll try to bang out an extension as soon as we can, because they’re two young men that we want to have in the mix,” Chiarelli said. B’s season will start with a flurry The Bruins have three preseason games remaining as they will host the Islanders tonight (7 p.m., NESN) at TD Garden, play the Islanders again in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on Friday and finish off the warmup act Saturday at the Garden against the Red Wings (5:30 p.m., NESN). The regular-season schedule will test the B’s right away as they open with a back-toback and play three games in four days next week (home against Philly Oct. 8, away against Detroit Oct. 9, and home against Washington Oct. 11).
