A 32-year-old Boston woman is facing assault and battery charges for allegedly using a corkscrew to repeatedly stab a woman at the Central Square T station in what prosecutors are calling an unprovoked attack. Candace Daley was arraigned Tuesday following the early morning attack, which sent the victim to the hospital with wounds to her head and face. Daley said in a police report that she heard someone utter a racial slur before she approached the victim. METRO

Rather than fight the rising tide that is being ushered in by climate change, a new report suggests Boston embrace it with creative design solutions, including urban canals. The Urban Land Institute of Boston and New England on Tuesday released “The Urban Implications of Living With Water,” which outlined ideas like building canals in the Back Bay, raising the Harbor Walk in the Innovation District, adding breakwaters in Boston Harbor and creating absorbent wetlands in waterfront areas. “I think any solution to the rising sea level will be hard for

people to grasp because it is something we’ve never had to deal with before,” said Dennis Carlberg, director of Sustainability at Boston University and chair of the Back Bay site. “This [report] is a vision for what a positive outcome could be.” The ideas were born from a daylong brainstorming session that included more than 70 industry experts, including engineers and architects. Scientists predict water levels could rise as much as seven feet by the year 2100. The Back Bay sits on filled-in marshland, and much of the land lies less than four feet above today’s high tide. “Rather than being frightened by this, it’s important to think about the future and how to embrace it,” said Carlberg. “And we have to invest in change.”

Visit Metro.us to see more artist renderings of the proposed canals. Quoted Integration of a canal system into the Back Bay would “celebrate living with water much in the way Venice and Amsterdam have for centuries,” according to the “Living With Water” report.

The proposed system would transform alternating northsouth streets and east-west alleys into canals, allowing for the existing street grid to continue to function, only as waterways. The canals would provide new waterway connections to the Charles River through a system of locks and to Fort Point Channel by way of the naturally forming Mass Pike Canal. If the city doesn’t plan ahead, Boston can say goodbye to its beloved waterfront neighborhoods, Carlberg said. “The alternative is walking away from them, and there is so much value in our community, financially and socially,” said Carlberg. Boston. Children showing polio-like symptoms are tested for enterovirus Boston Children’s Hospital patients ranging in age from 4 to 15 are being tested for enterovirus-68 after exhibiting polio-like symptoms, doctors confirmed to WCVB Tuesday. The virus, which has spread across 41 states since mid-August, causes severe respiratory

infections and poses the most risk to kids with asthma. The patients had a respiratory illness before the onset of neurological symptoms, according to the report. One test came back negative, and three other tests were pending.

Health officials are investigating at least 10 cases of children in Colorado who developed limb weakness or paralysis after testing positive for EV-68. A total of 472 people across the U.S. have been infected since August. METRO

Aliana Tsarnaeva, 24, sister of Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, pleaded not guilty at her arraignment on two counts of aggravated harassment for allegedly calling the woman and telling her, “Leave my man alone. Stop looking at him. I know people that can put a bomb where you live.” Bail was set at $5,000 with the condition that she have no contact with the alleged victim. Colleges grapple with rape culture Bay State. After three sexual assaults at various colleges in a week, a local advocate is urging vigilance. Colleges must stay vigilant in educating their communities about sexual violence and working to dismantle rape culture, according to one local advocate. Toni K. Troop, a spokeswoman for Jane Doe Inc., the statewide advocacy coalition against sexual assault, made the comments after sexual assaults were reported at three Massachusetts colleges in the last week. This month, sexual assaults have been reported at Massasoit Community College, Fram-

ingham State University and Stonehill College. “This is not a new issue,” said Troop. “Sexual violence occurs at alarming rates in all communities, on and off campus. The difference now is these stories are being connected. Instead of looking at individual cases we are looking at it as a larger public health issue.” Rape culture pervades all cultures indiscriminately, she said, and it’s important that issues of sexual violence on campus be addressed not only during student orientation, but throughout the year. Campuses should be bringing in speakers, holding workshops and providing training to debunk myths that surround sexual violence. “Acknowledging that rape and sexual assault do not happen in a vacuum, that they’re the result of misogyny and an abuse of power and control, are

“Acknowledging that rape culture exists is the first step in dismantling rape culture.” Troop important steps. We’re talking about a millennia of culture we’re trying to turn around,” she said. The uptick in recent years of reported incidents of sexual violence is more about the removal of barriers that make it easier for victims to report crimes and have confidence that communities will bring offenders to justice, not necessarily an increase in the incidents themselves, she said. Dougan said that one homeless man, Darwin May, has been charged with receiving stolen property in connection with copper taken from the property during a break-in the night before. May, however, has not been charged with any crimes relating directly to the fire. The 170-year-old structure is in the midst of extensive renovations. CDC confirms first Ebola case in US

Patients. The previous US patients were medical or aid workers who were diagnosed while in West Africa.

Health officials said on Tuesday that the first patient infected with the deadly Ebola virus has been diagnosed in the country after flying from Liberia to Texas, in a new sign of how the outbreak ravaging West Africa can spread globally. The patient sought treatment six days after arriving in Texas on Sept. 20, Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), told reporters on

Tuesday. He was admitted two days later to an isolation room at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. Health officials and lawmakers have been bracing for the eventuality that a patient would arrive on U.S. shores undetected, testing the preparedness of the nation’s health care system. Frieden said a handful of people, mostly family members, may have been exposed to the patient after he fell ill. He said there was likely no threat to any passengers who had traveled with the patient. Asked whether the patient was a U.S. citizen, Frieden described the person as a visitor to family here. “It is certainly possible someone who had contact with this individual could develop Ebola

in the coming weeks, Frieden told a news conference. “I have no doubt we will stop this in its tracks in the United States. The Texas Department of State Health Services said it was working with the CDC, the local health department and the hospital “to investigate the case and help prevent transmission of the disease. REUTERS Quoted

NFL TV ratings rise despite domestic violence concerns Commissioner. Goodell has been criticized for his uneven response to abuse cases.

‘Charles River’

Americans are tuning in to NFL in greater numbers than last year, according to early season viewership figures, signaling the league’s fumbled handling of domestic violence cases has not dented its popularity. Through the first three weeks of the season, audiences watching nationally televised primetime broadcasts have risen and nearly all networks have seen an uptick in viewership so far this season. “I’m not going to stop watching football, said Los Angeles lawyer Conor Flahive, 26.

The domestic abuse crisis was touched off when Goodell suspended former Ravens star Ray Rice two games for punching his fiancee, now wife, unconscious, a punishment many believed was too light. CBS has drawn 19.5 million viewers on average to its Sunday afternoon NFL games, according to Nielsen data, an increase from its 17.8 million it averaged over the course of last season, continuing the NFL’s run as a ratings juggernaut. REUTERS Quoted

“Obviously, they did a bad job handling it. Flahive said, echoing much of a public sentiment that heaps blame on the NFL higher-ups while stopping short of turning their backs on the league in general.

Guess who’s back? Amanda Bynes!

You know who we haven’t heard from in a while? Amanda Bynes. Well, that dry spell is over, because she’s back! The conservatorship giving her parents control over her life and finances ended earlier this month, and right on cue, we have the former Nickelodeon star’s first run-in with the law. Bynes was arrested over the weekend for driving under the influence after cops in Sherman Oaks, California, saw her stop at a red light — in the middle of the intersection. Police charged Bynes with a misdemeanor after they “determined she was under the influence of a controlled substance,” according to E! News, though exactly what substance is still a mystery. And that’s not all. Bynes is making up for troubled starlet lost time, as Radar Online reports that she’s flunked out of the Fashion

Gawker gets Lena Dunham’s attention Lena Dunham was originally planning to have the opening acts on her upcoming, sold-out book tour perform for free, but that was before Gawker pointed it out. Now Dunham has changed course, announcing that the acts — ranging from comedians to gymnasts to ukulele players — will be compensated. “Some good points were raised and I’ve ensured that all opening acts will be compensated for their time, their labor and their talents,” Dunham tweeted. “The fact that Gawker pointed this out really

You can’t do that! We want it like the other one with all the creatures!’”

Having to choose between famous friends can be tough, as Matt Damon learned when he chose to head to Italy for George Clooney’s wedding, missing Ben Affleck’s “Gone Girl” premiere in New York the night before. And the choice apparently did not go unnoticed by Affleck’s wife, Jennifer Garner. “Jennifer was furious that Matt didn’t go to the premiere. She flipped out that he ditched his best friend on his big night to go to George’s wedding instead.” Oof. Way to get on your best friend’s wife’s bad side, Matt. Funny thing, though — from perusing the red carpet photos of the “Gone Girl” premiere, you know who else apparently wasn’t there? Jennifer Garner, who was in Los Angeles the next morning to do press for her own new film, “Men, Women and Children.” Maybe she was projecting? Or maybe the rule is that premiere attendance trumps all other events. In Damon’s defense, Affleck has had — and will continue to have — a lot of movie premieres, including that little “Batman” project he has going. Clooney’s only going to get married maybe a handful more times.

The woman behind Hendrix Interview. The “Jimi: All Is by My Side” actress Imogen Poots talks playing a woman not many know. Imogen Poots plays an instrumental part in “Jimi: All Is by My Side,” but her character — Keith Richards’ girlfriend Linda Keith — never got much thanks for cajoling the guitar god out of obscurity and helping him shape his style and persona. Andre Benjamin’s performance as Hendrix is incredible. He’s electrifying. The first time I met him, I was so entranced by him. And I think, if anything, he had to quiet himself for Jimi. There’s a real intelligence and perceptiveness to somebody just observing and being quiet, and I think that’s something he wanted Jimi to have — and also an innate melancholy. I think that comes [through]. Linda Keith is not very well known, so did you feel any pressure trying to imitate her? Our director spoke to her, and she was very cool. She was sort of like, “Go do your thing; I give you my blessing, but I don’t want any part of it.” In that way, it was certainly a relief, because if you meet the person face-to-face it’s a

Imogen Poots plays Linda Keith, the woman who helped launch the career of Jimi Hendrix (Andre Benjamin). / PATRICK REDMOND Record-straightening

Many thanks “You’d think Hendrix would have been a bit more appreciative,” says Poots. “I think what she knows is the idea that you can sort of nurture artists and support them, but they don’t belong to you. ... It’s sort of the same thing as making a film about Hendrix. People who love him IMOGEN POOTS will feel an FILMMAGIC inevitable ownership.”

Quoted

“She was very much a catalyst for [Hendrix]. She was really instrumental in his career in London, and a lot of people maybe don’t know that.” Poots, on Linda Keith whole new pressure. But I really, really love Linda. You can see how important it was to her but also how cool she was in a way. I wouldn’t want Linda Keith to turn around and be like, “What have you done?!”

It’s fascinating to see her role in shaping who Jimi Hendrix eventually came to be. And I think it’s really, really authentic, actually, in terms of [writer/director John Ridley’s] storytelling. She very much was a catalyst for him. She was really instrumental in his career in London, and a lot of people maybe don’t know that. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.us

Anyone who follows Emily Henderson — HGTV host and Target’s new home style expert — on Instagram or her (super fun) website knows that the designer is hysterically funny, and she’s also currently renovating her new Los Angeles home. The design star takes a break from fixing up her dream house to think back to her NYC days in a tiny Spanish Harlem apartment. She shares some tips for living in a challenging city space.

EMILY HENDERSON / PROVIDED

Her must-haves for tiny rooms

“Think about reflective surfaces. Glass, Lucite and metallic items reflect light around and make a place appear brighter.”

“Plug-in sconces keep lamps off your tables and provide more light.”

Avoid sensory overload “The overall philosophy is if you live in a small space that’s dark, the more contrast you have, the smaller it will look,” says Henderson. Her advice: “Limit the color palette and limit the amount of patterns.” But, stresses the designer, “With the patterns you do include, try and keep the contrast down.” For example, instead of getting a huge black-and-white rug, get a gray-and-white rug that’s more tonal.

ONEFORTYTHREE SCONCE, $260, ONEFORTYTHREE.COM

But no stark white walls Despite popular belief, “people in small spaces with no natural light shouldn’t paint their walls white,” says Henderson. “It just looks flat and dead.” She says to go with a tone such as a medium gray. “You just want some sort of pigment in the paint in order for it to have life.” On bringing in color

“If you love color, paint your walls a white [if you have natural light] or neutral, because it means you’re going to consistently buy things that are colorful.” Henderson

A clear coffee table is perfect for small spaces. Cb2’s clear coffee table is $279 at Cb2.com. / CB2 Three fixes

In her NYC pad

1

“I did a lot of brackets and shelving on the walls to keep things off of surfaces. Surfaces can get cluttered easily. So use your wall space and go vertical.”

2

“I chose a lot of pale colors that went together, with low contrast. So it felt softer and less messy.”

3

“I was obsessed with temporary furniture like folding chairs and folding tables — especially vintage ones. Also, multifunctional pieces like stools that act as cocktail tables and chairs.”

Where we stand on breast cancer Awareness month. BreastCancer.org founder talks genetic testing, tailored treatments and the Angelina Effect. As an oncologist and a survivor herself, Dr. Marisa Weiss knows the urgency felt by those diagnosed with breast cancer. Genetic testing has accelerated the pace of innovation. “The treatments for breast cancer are really getting very tailored,” she says. “One of the things we learned about breast cancer is that it’s not one disease; there are different types of breast cancer that behave very differently and are treated differently.” As Breast Cancer Awareness month begins, Weiss, the founder of BreastCancer.org, tells Metro how the field has changed in the last year and what’s on the horizon.

Facts & figures

What’s new in the field? “Just over a year ago, Angelina Jolie shared her personal story

about having the BRCA1 gene in her family, and so there is the Angelina Effect: About twice the number of women are getting genetic testing now than before. In addition, the Supreme Court took the patents off the [BRCA] genes, which allowed many more companies to come into the marketplace to test for BRCA1/2 as well as other

Breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, with 1.7 million new cases in 2012.

It accounts for one in every four cancer cases in women globally.

genes. They also brought the price down.” What looks promising? “What’s driving these advancements is trying to better understand the genes and proteins that turn on and turn off breast cancer growth, as well as their ability to behave in certain ways, like invade normal tissue.”

NFL power rankings | by Matt Burke No. 1

No. 3

No. 11

Bengals (3-0)

Eagles (3-1)

Texans (3-1)

Panthers (2-2)

How do the Bengals gain more respect in these rankings? Knock off the limping Patriots this Sunday night in Foxboro. It’s Sasquatch-sighting rare that the Pats put together back-toback duds.

Nick Foles’ quarterback rating against San Francisco on Sunday? A cool 42.3. That’s hard to do. And LeSean McCoy’s rushing yardage total has been held to less than 25 yards in back-to-back weeks.

The Texans are much like their aforementioned Texas neighbor in that they seem like a team that could go on a fouror five-game losing streak at moment’s notice despite their strong record.

Steve Smith Sr. warned the Panthers in the offseason that when he faced them that they better “put goggles on, because there’s going to be blood and guts everywhere.” The guy is a prophet.

No. 4

Seahawks (2-1) Interesting to note that our top four teams from last week remain in that order this week. The reason? All four (Seattle, Denver, Cincy and Arizona) had byes. After that, there’s been great upheaval. As for the Seahawks: they play at Washington on Monday night off the bye. That is 15 days between games.

Cardinals (3-0)

Lions (3-1)

Colts (2-2)

Dolphins (2-2)

The quarterback situation remains strange. Bruce Arians said they would have “liked to see more” from Carson Palmer during the bye week. All signs point to Peyton Manning vs. Drew Stanton as of right now.

How good does the Golden Tate pickup look right about now? With Calvin Johnson dinged up, Tate stepped right in and caught 116 of Matthew Stafford’s 293 passing yards against the Jets.

The Colts are perfectly average through four games. They’ve scored 40-plus points against dregs like the Jags and Titans but couldn’t hang with highscoring teams like Denver and Philadelphia.

Head coach Joe Philbin should question Ryan Tannehill’s ability each and every week. The Dolphins quarterback had his best game of the season against the Raiders, throwing for 278 yards and two TDs.

No. 17

Chargers (3-1)

Packers (2-2)

Chiefs (2-2)

Falcons (2-2)

Jacksonville actually led the Chargers midway through the second quarter Sunday, but San Diego predictably cruised in the second half. It was nice to see Keenan Allen get into the mix offensively.

Marching into Soldier Field and pinning 38 points on the board against a Bears defense ain’t what it used to be, but Aaron Rodgers certainly looked like an MVP-caliber player this past Sunday.

Mark it down. The Chiefs were the first team in history to force Bill Belichick to bench Tom Brady due to performance. Jamaal Charles sure looked healthy on Monday night as well.

Remember last week when everyone was still buzzing about the Falcons’ explosiveness after they hung 56 points on the Bucs? Well, they had the ultimate letdown game, losing to the blah Vikings.

No. 6

No. 10

No. 14

No. 18

Broncos (2-1)

Ravens (3-1)

Cowboys (3-1)

49ers (2-2)

Bills (2-2)

The Broncos will host the undefeated Cardinals this Sunday in what could be a Super Bowl preview. Picking nits here, but it would be nice if the Broncos could get Demaryius Thomas going. He has just 141 yards receiving total so far.

It wasn’t too long ago that Baltimore was a candidate to go 3-13 this season as it lost to the Bengals in Week 1, had the second Ray Rice video scandal break and faced a short week before playing the rival Steelers on a Thursday night.

We just couldn’t put the Cowboys in the single digits here. Their 3-1 record is certainly a surprise, given their Week 1 loss to San Fran, but they’ve beaten the Titans, Rams and Saints — teams with a combined record of 3-8 this season.

The 49ers still have enough talent that despite any controversy, they’ll still grab wins. NFL Network’s Deion Sanders said that sources told him that 49ers players want Jim Harbaugh out. Harbaugh obviously downplayed the story.

It seems like a decade ago that the Bills were the feel-good story in the league. Did they panic this week in benching E.J. Manuel? Seems like a patchwork move from Doug Marrone, who is in full “save my own bum” mode.”

department. In his postgame press conference Monday night, Belichick was asked if it was time to do some evaluating at the quarterback position. The coach responded with a blank stare. In his weekly interview on WEEI’s “Dale & Holley” show Tuesday, Belichick discussed why he made the decision to put Jimmy Garoppolo into the game early in the fourth quarter. “I thought the game was out of hand at that point. I took a lot of players out,” Belichick said. “We turned the ball over three times in the second half

and the game got out of hand. I don’t think it was any one thing or any one play or player. … Every player on the team is part of the evaluation of the team every week. There’s no one player that isn’t part of the team [evaluation].” Garoppolo performed well in his first NFL game action, completing 6-of-7 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. But as far as a Brady/Drew Bledsoe — like quarterback controversy brewing this season? Belichick doesn’t see it. “It just didn’t go well [Monday night],” he said. MATT BURKE

NFL

Belichick fields ‘QB controversy’ questions Bill Belichick has made a ton of strange personnel decisions over the years. Look no further than his decision prior to Monday night’s 41-14 blowout loss in Kansas City to have wide receivers Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson listed as inactive. But benching Tom Brady? Eventually for more than garbage time? That decision would trump them all in the “did-he-really-just-do-that?!”

Browner set to return The Patriots need plenty of help at a number of positions but their secondary will receive an upgrade this week when cornerback Brandon Browner returns from suspension. Browner was suspended for the first four games of this season and missed much of last season, when he was a member of the Seattle Seahawks, as he has multiple violations of the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. Browner’s violations are reportedly tied to marijuana use.

Exactly one year ago this week, the Red Sox were preparing for the postseason. Fresh champagne and beer stains were on the ceiling of the clubhouse and smiles could not leave the player’s faces. This week, the scene at Fenway was much different. Visible were empty lockers, boxes upon boxes and barely a player in sight. With any team in baseball, especially an underperforming one, there is going to be change from year-to-year, so here are three players on the 2014 Red Sox who likely will not be in the 2015 Opening Day lineup:

David Ross, C Ross will be 38 years old at the beginning of next season and the gritty catcher’s twoyear contract is set to expire. The Red Sox seem certain Christian Vazquez can handle the full-time catching duties, partly because of the guidance he received from Ross this season. Another top catching prospect, Blake Swihart in Triple-A, likely needs one more year in the minors. It would seem as though the Red Sox would be in the market for a backup catcher for one season, but Ross doesn’t appear to be that guy. Ross will serve as an ESPN analyst this postseason and it would not be surprising to see him retire. “I think when we signed him two years ago, what we were hoping to have happen with that position mostly happened,” general manager Ben Cherington said. “He’s done a lot for the organization.”

Jackie Bradley Jr. will likely either start the 2015 season with Triple-A Pawtucket or be traded this offseason. / GETTY IMAGES

2

Jackie Bradley Jr., CF It was a strange season for Bradley Jr. The 24-year-old performed at a Gold Glove level in center field, but struggled mightily at the plate. He was sent down to Triple-A in late August with the hope of gaining confidence with the bat. Overall for the year, Bradley Jr. hit .198/.265/.266 and recorded just one hit with the Sox in September. The team believes there is a future for him -— he just needs to learn to hit at the

big league level, which is why it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him open 2015 in Pawtucket. “He does too many things well to think he’s not going to figure that out at some point and go on and be a really good major league player,” said Cherington.

3

Craig Breslow, RP Breslow’s contract is up and the left-handed reliever had a disappointing 2014 season, finishing 2-4 with a 5.96 ERA. One would be hard-

pressed to imagine a scenario in which the team extends an offer to bring him back, especially with left-handed relievers Drake Britton and Tommy Layne in the minor league system. It also wouldn’t be a shock to see the organization go out and sign a free agent left-handed reliever to help bolster its bullpen. It appears Breslow’s time in Boston has run out.
