A trio of area men have been indicted on state and federal charges in connection with an attempt to swindle a casino land deal in Everett. Authorities say the three men tried to hide the interest of a convicted felon in a parcel of Everett land from Wynn Resorts, which last month won a Boston area casino license from state gaming regulators. the land. Authorities describe Lightbody as a convicted felon and a known associate of the New England Family of La Cosa Nostra. Lightbody wanted to receive money from Wynn in exchange for the land, according to authorities. All three are facing charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, and aiding and abetting. Authorities say the trio
made it seem as if Lightbody’s interest in FBT had been transferred to Gattineri in exchange for a $1.7 million promissory note. Furthermore, the three created fake documents that reflected the supposed transaction, lied in an email to Wynn that Lightbody no longer had any interest in the land and misled the gaming commission’s investigators about his role. The three allegedly hid his role in FBT because he had a criminal record, according to state authorities. It is illegal in the state for felons to have a stake — even an indirect one — in a casino. Patrick, Walsh to discuss 2024 Boston Olympic bid Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and Gov. Deval Patrick are expected to meet on Monday with a group of athletes and advocates pushing for the 2024 Summer Olympics to be held in the Hub. Thirty Olympic athletes from Massachusetts, including figure skater Nancy Kerrigan, will join the pair at pingpong hot spot Blazing Paddles on Lansdowne Street to garner support for the Boston Olympic bid. In June, Boston was selected by the United States Olympic Committee as one of four candidate cities for a potential bid to host the 2024 Games. Walsh and Patrick have both previously voiced support of the idea. “Boston is known across the
world for its sports prowess and this impressive group of Massachusetts-bred Olympians is a testament to our sporting spirit,” Walsh said in an emailed statement Thursday. “I look forward to joining Gov. Patrick to meet these incredibly accomplished and inspiring athletes and hear

Bridgewater. Students angry over lack of information about rapes
World Series MVP & Champion David Ortiz stopped by Massachusetts General Hospital for Children on Thursday to raise the spirits of some young patients undergoing rehabilitation, treatment or lifethreatening illnesses. This past May, Big Papi hosted the second annual David Ortiz Children’s Fund Gala, a Dominican-themed soiree which raised over $200,000 for its associated organizations, including the Massachusetts General Hospital for Children.
Bridgewater State University students have launched an online petition protesting the college’s decision not to alert them about two rapes that occurred there in September. University officials said they did not release the information because the suspects in the assaults, which occurred on Sept. 3 and Sept. 20, were immediately identified and apprehended. The school did, however, notify students of a Sept. 18 rape on campus because the suspect in that assault had not been arrested, and therefore still posed a risk to the community. According to BSU student newspaper The Comment, the Change.org petition urges school officials to reconsider their decision not to notify students of certain sexual assaults on campus. Bridgewater’s president, Dana Mohler-Faria, released a statement that the university

Up to 100 people may have had contact with the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States, and four people were quarantined in a Dallas apartment where sheets and other items used by the man were put in sealed plastic bags to prevent infection. Health officials said on Thursday that 12 to 18 people had direct contact with the patient, who flew to Texas from Liberia via Brussels and Washington two weeks ago, and they in turn had contact with scores of others. None of those thought to have had contact with the patient, Thomas Eric Duncan, were showing symptoms of
Ebola, Dallas County officials said at a news conference. In Liberia, the head of the country’s airport authority, Binyah Kesselly, said the government could prosecute Duncan for denying he had contact with someone who was eventually diagnosed with Ebola. The government said Duncan failed to declare that he helped neighbor Marthalene Williams after she fell critically ill on Sept. 15. Williams died. Kesselly said Duncan was asked in a questionnaire whether he had come in contact with any Ebola victim or was showing any symptoms. “To all of these questions, Mr. Duncan answered ‘no,’ Kesselly said. Dallas County officials said the problem was very localized. “When I say local, I don’t mean Dallas. I mean a very specific neighborhood in the northeast part of Dallas, Mayor Mike Rawlings told reporters.

Interview. Rosamund Pike says “Gone Girl” speaks to an age when we can be whoever we want.
When Gillian Flynn’s bestseller “Gone Girl” was to be made into a movie, casting its male lead — Nick Dunne, a man alternately hated and loved — was a no-brainer: Ben Affleck. Amy — Nick’s missing, mysterious wife — was a little trickier. They wisely went with English actress Rosamund Pike, who skillfully delivers a diverse performance — much of which we can’t talk about, for fear of spoilers. Luckily, there’s still a lot that Pike can tell us about “Gone Girl.”
“I hadn’t read it. I had my son just before it came out, so that gives you about six months underground without exposure to what’s going on in the world.”
It would be cruel to spoil the twist that pops up halfway through “Gone Girl,” but fortunately, many of the changes are in the first half. Most of Amy’s diary entries and her early life with Nick have been condensed, as have some of Nick’s more subtle psychological mistreatments of her as pressures mount. Nick’s narration is gone too, meaning we get less of an idea of his temper and his mild but noticeable misogyny — issues inherited from his now senile father, a sexist who likes to shout the B-word. In the film, his dad gets only one scene then disappears, and while he was never a prominent character, he still lends some darker insights into Nick’s personality. That said, this is a largely faithful adaptation, and the second half of the film is appropriately totally nuts.

Flynn’s portrayal of courtship
“To me, it seems to be about how you can construct an honest relationship in an age where everyone’s trying to perform to get a mate. There’s [Flynn’s] idea of women playing ‘the cool girl’ — a slightly altered version of themselves that suits the people they’re trying to attract. That was shocking and new.”
Amy’s issues “Amy is someone who has very high expectations ... engendered by her peculiar upbringing. Her parents have created this character, Amazing Amy, based on her. Everything falls in her lap, this fictional twin who succeeds whenever [real-world Amy] slips up. It’s given Amy a very fragile sense of who she is and a sense of entitlement. She takes that with her into a relationship.”
On Amy and Nick
ROSAMUND PIKE GC IMAGES
“Nick Dunne is probably not the perfect match for her. He can be the perfect match. He is equally nonspecific, in a way. He’s able to perform and be amazingly charming and compelling, but
is equally a shlub who doesn’t take his boxers off all day and plays video games. And that is not the guy Amy wants to be married to.”
What it says about marriage “There’s a point in marriage where you can decide not to accept all parts of yourself, to only express some of yourself. Amy subscribes to that. You bury the parts of you that are lacking and you decide you should always be a high-wattage, dashing version of yourself — which is of course an unsustainable ideal.”
What “Gone Girl” says about today “[We’re] in a climate where everyone is so aware of how they come across. People speak to each other on Skype — so they’re not only having a telephone conversation, they’re suddenly maybe not picking their teeth because someone can see them. Everyone is so much more self-aware than they were 50 years ago. You’re always having to be aware of yourself from the outside, which is a recipe for narcissism. Even if you’re not actually lying, even if there are photos of you, they’re edited versions. You’re choosing the best images, the best angles.” MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

Were there things you were sad to lose? There were certain characters I lost along the way who I knew we just didn’t have time for. [Amy’s ex-boyfriend’s] mom was a character I always liked. Getting back together: Yes, it can work Relationships are always easy — in the beginning. Both people are on their best behavior. But sometimes, despite the initial euphoria and all those promises made, things don’t go the way they were planned. And then it’s over as quickly as it started. But the feelings that were shared don’t dissipate at the same speed. Eventually you may ask yourself: “Do I get back together with my ex?” Once you’re at that point, the process begins.
Stage 1: You question if it’s worth trying again When it comes to past relation-
ships, you can’t go back. Going back means only one thing: repeating past situations and mistakes. When you revisit an old flame, it still has to be new. Otherwise, you risk repeating behaviors and actions that broke you up in the first place.
Stage 2: You worry it might end all over again How do you know if it will work this time? You don’t. Like any relationship, it has its own chance for success or failure. However, you already have the

Rejection isn’t personal: It’s a myth that all creatures in the animal kingdom find partners easily. “I didn’t take rejection well,” says Verdolin. “But it really wasn’t personal, this was just not the right person for me. Looking at animals and how easily they were rejected, I started to become really focused.” She began asking, “Is this a good match for me?” Monogamy isn’t necessarily natural: Not every animal mates for life. Squirrels, for example, have several shortterm partners over the course of their lifetimes. The nature of their courtship process, says Verdolin, reflects this. “The choices are often made based on physical appearance,” she notes. LAKSHMI GANDHI

But true to form, naysayers on both sides of the gender divide were fast to nitpick her words — including the New York Post. Some reporters used her words to take a contrarian view to get hits.
Stage 3: You wonder if you really belong together
Stage 4: You work hard to fix what broke
There are no guarantees in life and love, but unless you are getting back together for love and companionship, you are doing it for the wrong reasons. There are some tell-tale signs that things may not work this time around, including a fear of failure and signs of repeating past behavior — from either party.
For any relationship to be great, you need a combination of things: honesty, empathy, compassion, loyalty and more. But if you are starting over with a past love, you’ll need all that plus open, honest communication, a willingness to be wrong and the freedom to surrender control.

Dating. We can learn a lot about commitment from our fellow creatures There’s a lot we can learn about love from the birds and the bees — and the chickens, monkeys and squirrels. At least, that’s true according to Jennifer Verdolin, an animal behavior expert and the author of the new book “Wild Connection: What Animal Courtship and Mating Tell Us About Human Relationships.” “We have this cultural idea of what dating and romance is, but if we just had a little awareness, we could make choices that are healthy,” she says Verdolin shares some of the most important things she learned about relationships through her work.

How do you define the sound of our town? Sadie Dupuis, Speedy Ortiz: Because it’s an academic city, Boston has a wealth of highly trained conservatory musicians, but for me the best music of Boston comes from its no-frills songwriters who write in a way that transcends genre. ... It’s not a city people move to to get noticed or to get hype, so I think the artistic output is a lot more pure, honest and interesting than a larger or hipper city. Anna Fox Rochinski, Quilt: A big part of the reason I appreciate
the Boston scene is because there are so many genres that crisscross here. I think the sound of Boston is authentic. There isn’t one reigning type of sound. Adam Sankowski, The Grownup Noise: I would say that this show represents the “sound of our town” pretty well. It’s an eclectic lineup, some indie, some soul, some hip-hop, some folk-ish stuff. Quality song-focused stuff all around. That’s Boston at its best for me.
What’s your fave local song? Noel Heroux, Hooray for
Earth: My fave local Boston song is “Hey Brian” by Porsches on the Autobahn. Dutch ReBelle: Slaine’s “99 bottles.” Being from Milton but growing up around some of the rougher neighborhoods, I thought, “This is the soundtrack of my high school!!” Brian King, Parks: Bleu’s “Feet Don’t Fail.” Extremely catchy and sounded like nothing else on the radio among the Kid Rocks and Korns of 2000. Scorpio|Oct. 23-Nov. 21. Hesitation and self-doubt will deter you from making the gains that will help you feel good about who you are and what you do.
Taurus | April 21-May 21. Difficulties may arise at work if you are drawn into a battle of wills with a colleague. Take the high road and stick to the facts. An emotional reaction will leave a bad impression.

an invalid one, like global warming. We know the Earth is round and the Holocaust happened through irrefutable physical evidence from the past. We know that catastrophic man-made climate change is happening by computer models that try to predict the future of Earth’s climate system — the same models that failed to predict the “pause” in global warming.

Re: ‘Publishing letters denying climate change irresponsible’ (Metro, Oct. 1) I think very much that Metro would print letters about the world being flat! If we have any of those rolling into Metro’s inbox, I would love to see them. I’m sure they’d be just as hilarious as the ones about ice ages being natural. It is worth mentioning that global heating and cooling is natural in the way that a snake biting a human is natural; if you see it coming, you should probably

Even their own markers contradict themselves, which is why they constantly “evolve” on this “settled science” as to what constitutes climate change: “OMG, it’s hot in summer!” “OMG it’s cold in winter!” “Seas will boil!” “Low income and Ebola are signs of climate change!” SEAN ROOK, VIA EMAIL

Patriots storylines to watch versus Bengals
SPORTS
Match game
It may be Green day for Revis Darrelle Revis told WEEI this week that he’d “feel comfortable approaching Bill [Belichick] about anything. Revis has been playing mostly zone, but could very well be asked, or ask himself, to be matched up with Bengals star receiver A.J. Green on Sunday night.
NFL. The Patriots are in danger of dipping below .500 as theyy face the undefeated Bengals engals on Sunday night. It’s been a while, a long while, since the methods of Bill Belichick have been called into question by so many. Winning masks everything, but Belichick and the Patriots haven’t been on the right ght side of the scoreboard in two wo of their first four games. Despite the negativity around here, the Pats are still just two-point wo-point underdogs in this Sunday’s day’s game (8:30 p.m., NBC) against what very well could bee the best team in the NFL in n the 3-0 Cincinnati Bengals. It’s your classic crossroads gamee for the Pats. Win, and the sky’ss the limit in 2014. Lose, and d the sky will be falling. MATT BURKE @BurkeMetroBos

Sour streaks strea
In the Bill Bel Belichick/Tom Brady era, the Patriots rarely have back-toback-to-back ugly outings, but that th has already transpired in 2014 as they squeaked by winless Oakland at hom home, 16-9, and were blown out on the road by the Chiefs, 41-14, this past Monday night. The Pats haven’t hav lost back-to-back back-to-ba games since falling f Arizona at home to Ar road at and on the ro Baltimore ear early in the 2012 sea season. If they were tto lose Sunday nig night to Cincinnati, it would TOM BRADY HAS A PASSER mark the ďŹ rst time RATING OF JUST 79.1 that the Pa Pats were SO FAR THIS SEASON. below .500 in the GETTY IMAGES month of O October since the 20 2002 season. has started the majority of the games. In 2008, the Pats missed the playos despite an 11-5 record with Matt Cassel as the starter. Another rarity in the past 13 years has been a multiinterception game for Brady. The future Hall of Famer did not have a multi-interception game at all last season and hadn’t been picked o twice in one game since the 2012 AFC championship game loss to Baltimore. Brady’s 2012 season actually featured four multi-interception games, counting the playos, including December games against the 49ers and Jaguars in which he had back-to-back outings with a pair of picks. Brady was not picked o in the ďŹ rst three games of this season. By the numbers

GIOVANI BERNARD GETTY IMAGES
Runaway trains Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis ran roughshod over the New England defense last Monday. Unfortunately for the Pats defense, the Bengals running back duo of Giovani Bernard and Jeremy Hill are just as dangerous. Neither Hill nor Bernard have a 100yard rushing game so far this season, but the Bengals are averaging 121.7 yards per game on the ground. Bernard also excels as a pass-catching back, having caught 12 balls for 148 yards in three games. According to CincyJungle .com, Bernard is on pace to break James Brooks’ franchise record for yards from scrimmage in a season.

Defense bending and breaking
A phrase that Patriots fans are quite familiar with from the team’s championship years of the early and mid-2000s, is “bend but don’t break. It references a defense that may give up yards, but consistently keeps the opposition out of the end zone. The Bengals are currently the best in the league at this as they allow an average of 352.7 yards per game (ranking just 14th in the NFL) but give up a scant 11 points per game. The 11 points per game mark is easily the best number in the league as Arizona and Baltimore are tied for second best, allowing 15 points per game. Interestingly, the Patriots defense is ranked No. 1 in the NFL in passing yards allowed, giving up just 185.5 yards per game, but is ranked just 14th in the league in points allowed per game at 22.5.
Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton has guided the Bengals to an undefeated record so far this season. / GETTY IMAGES
Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton has been solid in the Bengals’ wins over the Ravens, Falcons and Titans. The fourth-year signal caller out of Texas Christian is averaging 240 yards per game and has hit on 55-of-84 passing attempts so far. Dalton has thrown two touchdown
passes and just one interception. A.J. Green remains Dalton’s favorite target as he leads the Bengals with 233 yards of receiving on 12 catches. Mohamed Sanu has played well for Cincy as well, collecting 164 yards in the passing game.
