Historians to crack open State House time capsule Boston. The Bostonian Society today will get a glimpse into the past, and is collecting modern items to include in a 2014 time capsule next month. Relics from the turn of the 20th century are expected to be revealed today after being sealed up and tucked away for more than a century in the head of a copper statue. Members of the Bostonian Society will open a time capsule that was recently discovered within the head of a 113-yearold lion statue that sat atop the Old Massachusetts State House. The statue was removed in midSeptember, along with a copper unicorn statue, for restoration. Suspicions of a time capsule were raised in 2011 when a descendant of carpenter Samuel D. Rogers sent the Bostonian Society a letter Rogers wrote in 1901 describing the box’s placement and its contents. Sculptor Robert Shure of Skylight Studios in Woburn located the box using a fiber optic camera in late September. After days of carefully opening a natural seam on the lion’s head, Shure was able to retrieve the blue-black box. “I drilled a little hole in the top of the crown and, lo and behold, there was a box,” said Shure, who is tasked with restoring the statues. “I was just as surprised as anyone else.” The discovery has piqued the interest of history buffs in Boston and beyond. Regardless of what is found
inside the aged box, the Bostonian Society intends to collect items for a new time capsule. “Time capsules tell a story about the people of the time period,” said Heather Leet, director for development at the Bostonian Society. “It’s like leaving a snapshot of your time period for the future.” The group plans to insert a new time capsule into the lion’s head before it is replaced at the top of the State House in November, and has collected hundreds of suggestions on what should go inside. A Boston Marathon runner has offered his 2013 medal to commemorate the victims and survivors of that day’s deadly terror attack. “That is the only item we’ve accepted so far,” said Leet. “We thought it would be a great way to honor the people involved in the 2013 race.” Other items that may go in the new time capsule include an iPhone 6, a local newspaper, a photograph of Boston Mayor Martin Walsh, and letters from notable people. The group is collecting suggestions through the end of October.
What could be lurking in there?
Visit Metro.us today to find out what’s inside of the time capsule.
A Boston Globe article from Feb. 24, 1901 describes the time capsule, saying it would “prove interesting when the box is opened many years hence.” The report claims the box houses photographs and autographs of politicians

Council OKs $20K raise, has votes to beat mayor’s veto Boston. The increase puts the Council salary at just $8K less than what councilors are paid in New York City. The Boston City Council voted to boost a councilor’s salary from $87,500 to $107,500 Wednesday, but put off the pay increase until after the next election to avoid any legal conflicts of interest. The council voted in 9-4 favor of the pay bump at a Wednesday afternoon meeting. The pay increases are subject to a mayoral veto, but could go into effect January 2016; the next city election

will occur in 2015. Supporters framed the salary bump as overdue — the last council pay increase came eight years ago. Councilor Tito Jackson defended his yes vote by saying “public service shouldn’t be a subscription to poverty. The $107,5000 figure is $5,000 less than Council Presi-
dent Bill Linehan’s original proposal, which he introduced last month. Mayor Marty Walsh has 15 days to sign off on the increase or issue a veto. Mayoral spokeswoman Kate Norton said Walsh, who indicated he would veto Linehan’s original proposal, would review the matter and looks “forward to hearing feedback from the public. The council could override a veto with a two-thirds vote. If the nine councilors who voted in favor of the pay hike on Wednesday don’t change, the council would have enough support for the override. DANNY MCDONALD @DMacCash

A German and two American scientists won the 2014 Nobel Prize for Chemistry on Wednesday for smashing the size barrier in optical microscopes. U.S. citizens Eric Betzig and William Moerner and Germany’s Stefan Hell won the prize for using fluorescence to take microscopes to a new level, making it possible to study things such as the creation of synapses between brain cells in real time. “Due to their achievements the optical microscope can now peer into the nanoworld,” the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said as it awarded the 8 million crown ($1.1 million) prize.

Scientists, who have been looking down microscopes since the 17th century, had long thought there was a limit to what could be seen. In 1873, Ernst Abbe stipulated that resolution could never be better than 0.2 micrometers, or around 500 times smaller than the width of a human hair. At first, Jeremy Renner thought “Kill the Messenger was just a good story. It tells the true tale of Gary Webb, a journalist at the San Jose Mercury News who broke a story alleging a link between the CIA and the sudden appearance of crackcocaine in parts of Los Angeles. “At first it was about Gary Webb and his plight. I love the David and Goliath story, the everyman in extraordinary circumstances, he says. “Ultimately, it became a commentary on where we are today. I wouldn’t have known

I am Jeffrey S. Glassman, founder of this law ďŹ rm. I have devoted my professional career to helping and representing injured people for the past 22 years. Injured people need a caring lawyer because too many times insurance companies resist paying fair compensation and beneďŹ ts to injured victims. When insurance companies fail to do the right thing, I take it personal because the injured victim has already experienced physical, ďŹ nancial, and emotional hardships. When my ďŹ rm represents you for an injury, we are doing so in the same way I would represent my own mother or sister. Many lawyers claim they will ďŹ ght for you. They also make claims concerning how much money they can get for you. The difference between saying it and doing it is huge. We are successful because insurance companies know we will ďŹ le suit and go the distance on your claim. Renner’s big break It’s easy to forget — in part because the movie was forgotten almost as soon as it was released — but Renner got his start in 1995’s “National Lampoon’s Senior Trip, in which he played one of the misbehaving slacker teens. “That was my first job ever as an actor on film, he says. “I
two years ago that whistleblowing would be such a popular topic right now. But one could argue that the commentary is more of a critique. “Good journalism is not popular. People don’t care about good writing and good investigative reporting. They care about nude celebrity leaked photos. And that’s sad, Renner says. “You can’t blame the media, even though I do. They do exacerbate the fire that’s already started. But it’s people who want to see this stuff. Playing a journalist meant he had to learn about it. “That was a new thing for me to think about, being on that side of it, rather than having hatred toward it, he says. Indeed, Renner has been hounded by a number of rumors about his

Those are attributes, but they’re also flaws, he says. “That’s what I love about Gary Webb: He’s unapologetically flawed. “Kill the Messenger exists chiefly because Renner’s name is familiar to the globe’s moviegoers; in fact, he read the script while shooting “Marvel’s The Avengers. “Doing ‘Avengers’ movies lets me do ‘Kill the Messenger,’ he explains. “We do those, then we get to make this movie that no one seemingly wants to make, because it’s not easy. DATING
11
Sometimes you need to make your own relationship rules Dating. Breaking up doesn’t have to be hard to do.
If you’re unhappy in your relationship, it’s time to stop playing by the “rules.” COLOURBOX
It’s your job to speak up Too many times, we expect our partners to automatically know what we’re thinking, what we like or what we find uncomfortable. Mirk says that she herself had to practice expressing her feel-
ings out loud. “When I feel like I’m getting upset about something, I tell myself that it’s my job in a relationship to say something. Because if I don’t, nothing will change.” LAKSHMI GANDHI @LakshmiGandhi
lakshmi.gandhi@metro.us
If you read enough books about dating, it’s probably easy to assume that there are certain rules that apply to all happy relationships. Not true, says author Sarah Mirk, who recently released her book “Sex From Scratch: Making Your Own Relationship Rules.” While researching, Mirk says she spoke to 100 people who were either single, coupled or somewhere in between. “I learned that there is not any secret rule for doing relationships right,” Mirk says.

“What matters a lot is your approach to relationships. You have to be honest and intentional in your actions.” Mirk took some time to share some of the other lessons she discovered about dating and breaking up in the 21st century. Breaking up can be courageous: Many couples sometimes stay in unhappy partnerships for longer than they’d like because they either fear being single or cannot imagine what their lives will look like outside of their long-term relationships. “Breaking up is a pretty brave thing to do,” notes Mirk. “It’s not a sign of failure.” It’s also important to figure out why you want to end your relationship. “I think a lot of times people have a lot of deep, unhappy stuff,” says Mirk. “And instead of dealing with it, they
would do something obviously bad — like cheating — and then say, ‘Well, if I cheated, I have to break up,’ instead of fixing the problem.” Lean on your friends: It’s hard to have a breakup that isn’t painful. That’s why it’s so important to have a strong support system around you. u. “Your Your friends are going to be your superheroes,” says Mirk. Remember, you can be happy: “A lot of people lose track of what is a happy relationship,” says Mirk. If you don’t see yourself being happy with the person you are with, it’s OK to move on. “Everyone deserves to be in a relationship that’s healthy,” says Mirk.

Orwells getting wise Live tonight. On their second full-length album, this Chicago band is embracing both their maturity and their immaturity. Standing on 4th Street in Austin, Texas, interviewing the members of The Orwells earlier this year, two men in their 40s interrupt our conversation. The men recognize the band as an act they’ve already seen at the SXSW Music Conference and they’re wondering if the band are playing again during the week. The band members inform their fans of a show taking place the next night. The Orwells themselves are about half the age of these enthusiastic admirers. The Chicago five-piece, which includes two cousins and
a pair of twins, have been at it since high school (which was only a few years ago for them). They say that most of their fans are either a lot older or a lot younger. “It’s basically like 12-yearolds and 30-year-olds,” says singer Mario Cuomo. The essence of The Orwells can be found in this sort of duality. They attract little kids and they attract older dudes. A line on the opening song of their latest album, “Disgraceland,” puts it succinctly: “I’m not that old, but I’m getting pretty wise.” The young kids seek the band’s wisdom and the older fans find something in the band’s boundless youthful energy. At the time of the interview, none of the band members are of legal drinking age, yet they all appear hungover. They play punk rock, but unlike punk rockers of previous generations, they have absolutely no gripes with jocks or sports. Cuomo often

wears the jerseys of professional teams onstage, and they all ran cross-country together in high school. “My senior year I did a 6:45mile,” says drummer Henry Brimmer. It sounds a little bit like he’s bragging. “I bet you I’d do like a 7:30- or an 8-minute mile, but I’d probably die after.” “I’d probably be throwing up cigarettes,” offers guitarist Matt O’Keefe, between drags of one of the cigarettes he’d probably be throwing up. “The best workout is probably sex,” offers Cuomo. He says this with a goofy grin, but he seems sincere. Is he being serious? “There’s some van-rocking here and there,” he says. The turn that this conversation takes leads to pickup lines and the assistance of technology to hook up. Do they use Tinder? “Hell, no,” says Cuomo, almost disdainfully. “Our manag-
er uses Tinder. I don’t think it’s working out too well for him. My Tinder is me just walking around after shows, ‘Did you see me up there? Cuz I saw you down there!’” The band seem to also get a pretty good workout onstage. At the next night’s show, Cuomo takes the stage wearing a jersey with the number 23 on it. Later, he climbs the scaffolding and dangles upside down, uses his mic stand to smash one of the stage lights and fires an empty beer can into the audience, which happens to hit the head of an observer toward the back of the crowd who may or may not look an awful lot like the guy in the photo on this byline. Said victim may have had his nose buried in his phone, tweeting about some of the above action onstage. “Offstage, he’s a little more chill,” says O’Keefe of Cuomo. “He’s not quite as Satanic,” offers guitarist Dominic Corso.

‘Late Show’ encores
‘Some good TV’ Though “Disgraceland” came out in June, back in January The Orwells played “Who Needs You” — one of the album’s standout tracks — on “The Late Show with David Letterman.” The host was so moved that he called for an encore, but the band froze. Paul Shaffer and his band picked up the slack, with Shaffer even writhing around on the floor in homage to Cuomo. What was going through Cuomo’s mind? “Not a lot,” he says, “just, ‘What the f— is going on?’ ... But nonetheless it was some good TV.” When the band were invited back to the show in June, they were prepared for the possibility of an encore and they played “Who Needs You,” with Cuomo and Shaffer trading vocals. Yes, we all know we shouldn’t panic and that doing so may be worse than the disease itself. But it’s not paranoid to acknowledge that our experts still have a lot they don’t know, people

CUT BAIT WITH THESE BACKS WHILE YOU CAN
Sometimes, that sinking feeling in your stomach isn’t from bad deli meat. It’s from knowing that one of your key fantasy players is trending downward in a big way. Getting out in front of this decline and moving on is one antacid, a way to gain relief. These running backs are in trouble right now:
NFL matchups
Fire up these borderline players in Week 6: •
Jordan Reed at Arizona — If Reed is healthy, he’ll immediately take his job back from Niles Paul.
•
Justin Hunter vs. Jacksonville — Finally playing ahead of Nate Washington, the supremely talented Hunter is on the verge of an eruption.
•
Jordan Cameron vs. Pittsburgh — With Brian Hoyer moving the ball well, the targets will begin to funnel toward the healthy and athletic Cameron.
Deflated Ball Through the first four games, Montee Ball was averaging 3.1 yards per carry and got chewed out at least once by Peyton Manning. Now he has a serious groin injury that will cost him at least two to three weeks. If anyone in your league is assuming Ball will be given the starting job on his return and is willing to pay about 60 cents on the dollar, I would be selling. It’s more likely that Ball will return as a complementary piece, playing with Ronnie Hillman and C.J. Anderson instead of ahead of them.
‘Kno’ more Miller time in Miami Lamar Miller has been nothing short of spectacular since Knowshon Moreno (elbow)

Mascots gone wild Three days after the Jaguars mascot ruffled feathers with an Ebola sign, a man dressed in a wildcat costume holding a “Free AP” sign showed up for Adrian Peterson’s court date. A tentative Dec. 1 trial date was set for Peterson’s child abuse case. The mascot holding the sign in support of Peterson was said to be from Palestine High (Texas), where Peterson went to high school.

went down, rushing 27 times for 172 yards with two touchdowns over his last two games. But that doesn’t mean he’ll keep getting volume with Moreno on the verge of a return. The Dolphins see Moreno as the superior inside runner and foundation back, with Miller more as the finesse/ change-of-pace runner. We’re likely only looking at 9-12 carries per game for Miller, making him more of a flex
play than every-week starter.
Buck up The Bucs have shown plenty of support and patience with Doug Martin. I don’t know why. He’s been a liability in pass protection and is averaging just 2.5 yards per carry, one year after averaging 3.6 YPC. This lack of production has to show up in usage soon,

especially if Bobby Rainey can string together some quality performances. Martin should have enough cache as a “starting running back” to fetch a decent wideout on the trade market.

Pickups of the week The best adds for Week 6: •
Branden Oliver, RB, Chargers: Oliver will be a feature back until Ryan Mathews returns.
•
Ronnie Hillman, RB, Broncos: He’s now looking at 10-14 touches per week.
