BOSTON

A man who has recently traveled to Liberia was isolated with Ebola-like symptoms at a Braintree clinic on Sunday and is currently being monitored at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Dr. Kenneth Sands of Beth Israel told a news conference Sunday evening that the hospital’s medical staff would assess the man’s symptoms over the next few hours and would test him for Ebola if it was deemed appropriate. He said the results

would take 24 to 48 hours. Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Braintree confirmed that a patient had presented himself at their practice on Sunday afternoon complaining of headache and muscle aches. The building was briefly closed, but was cleared by the State Department of Public Health to reopen for usual business, according to a Harvard Vanguard statement. Earlier this month, Gov. Deval Patrick said during an interview with WGBH Radio the state was “well-prepared” to deal with the disease. But not everyone has agreed with the governor. The state’s largest nurses union has said Massachusetts hospitals are wholly unprepared to deal with an Ebola

case, citing a lack of isolation rooms and training. Earlier this month, David Schildmeier, spokesman for the Massachusetts Nurses Association, gave a grave assessment of the preparedness of hospitals in the state. “We are absolutely not prepared,” he said. “We don’t have the number of isolation rooms required. The nurses have not been trained on the issue appropriately. The policies and procedures aren’t in place. The staffing levels aren’t in place.” He added, “They’re working on it, but as usual it’s not fast enough. It’s a big concern.” Ebola has a fatality rate of around 50 percent. Arlington Police are investigating death threats made against a local video game developer. Developer Brianna Wu, head of development at Giant Spacekat, was targeted by a Twitter account called “Kill Brianna Wu.” Before the account was suspended, Wu was sent death threats about her and her husband. The person also threatened to rape Wu. Police confirmed they have received a such a complaint. Wu says she was among many targeted because she advocates for women’s rights in the gaming industry. “It’s not a coincidence that every woman targeted by these people is an outspoken advocate of women in the field: Zoe Quinn, Leigh Alexander and Anita Sarkeesian and me,”

she said. “The women that are the most visible in advocating equality for women are the ones that are the biggest threat to them.” Misogyny and sexism are significant issues for gamers, she says. “They don’t understand that the absence of privilege is not oppression. “We desperately need the game industry to take the same steps Google is taking to hire more women, educate their employees on their unconscious biases and include women at levels of leadership,” said Wu via email, adding that the industry is in the midst of a “very uncomfortable growing period.” “I think it’s going to get worse before it gets better,” she said. #gamergate

A scary trend Wu is the latest victim of misogynistic threats in the gaming world. Developer Zoe Quinn has also been subjected to online harassment and threats in recent months. An August blog by Quinn’s ex-boyfriend claimed that Quinn had a romantic relationship with a gaming journalist. That birthed the hashtag #gamergate, which was used by those concerned with journalistic ethics in the industry. That movement has recently been criticized for misogyny and sexism.

Lawyers: Tsarnaev knew older brother was a killer A prosecution witness is prepared to testify that accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev knew his brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev was involved in a 2011 Waltham triple murder, defense attorneys said Friday in court papers.

/ METRO FILE PHOTO

Lawyers for Tsarnaev, who is due to stand trial in January, want prosecutors to hand over evidence linking the elder Tsarnaev to the slayings, in which three men were found with their throats slit and surrounded by bits of marijuana. In the filing, attorneys suggest such evidence would show that Tamerlan Tsarnaev played a “dominant role” in organizing the deadly 2013 terror attack

and may have coerced and intimidated his younger brother. “Even the government has conceded that evidence concerning Tamerlan’s participation in Waltham murders might be relevant if Dzhokhar were aware of it,” the filing said. Tamerlan was killed in a shootout with police three days after the bombing. Dzhokhar faces execution if convicted. MORGAN ROUSSEAU

American rodeo cowboy Andre McClain has tamed a lot of challenges in his day, but since last year he has lassoed himself a new life as Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey’s first-ever equestrian ringmaster. McClain, 37, will hit TD Garden this Wednesday along with 110 performers for the circus’s newest show, “Built to Amaze.” “My job is to make sure you’re enjoying yourself, and

make sure the performers are energized and the customers are having a good time,” said McClain, who met his wife Dani, a “Ringlette” dancer, at work. “It was his voice that drew me to him,” said Dani, 25, of the behind-the-scenes romance. “I imagined him waking up every morning with that voice saying, ‘Good morning, baby.’” The two call Kansas City, Missouri, home, but they spend the majority of the year traveling via train and performing around the United States. McClain points to constant talent scouting and young producers as helping to keep the circus edgy and fires back at allegations by activists that circus animals live lives of hardship. “These animals have unbelievable lives here,” said McClain. “You can see the bond between the animals and the handlers.” MORGAN ROUSSEAU @MetroMorgan

A 21-month-old girl is the first in the state of Michigan and second in the U.S. to die this year from a strain of the enterovirus that has infected more than 500 people across the nation, health officials said on Saturday. Madeline Reid, who was stricken with Enterovirus D68, passed away late on Friday while being treated at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, hospital officials said in a statement. “It is never easy to lose a child, and our entire healthcare team at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan is deeply saddened by this family’s loss and mourns with them during this very difficult time,” Rudolph Valentini, chief medical officer at the children’s hospital, said. Reid is the first in the state reported to have died from the virus, according to Michigan Department of Community Health. REUTERS

Texas health worker becomes the first to contract Ebola in US Hospital workers. More than 50 people attended to his care. A Texas health worker has contracted Ebola after treating a Liberian who died of the disease at a Dallas hospital last week, raising concern about how U.S. medical guidelines aimed at stopping the spread of the disease were breached. The infected worker, identified as a woman but not named as authorities announced the case on Sunday, is believed to be the first person to contract the disease in the United States. Officials said the worker at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital had been wearing protective gear during treatment of Thomas Eric Duncan, a Libe-

ease Control and Prevention. “We don’t know what occurred in the care of the index patient, the original patient, in Dallas, but at some point there was a breach in protocol, and that breach in protocol resulted in this infection,” CDC director Dr. Thomas Frieden said. REUTERS

One killed, more than 20 injured in Halloween hayride accident

‘Philadelphia Phillies Summer Sunset’

A teenager was killed and two people remain in serious condition on Sunday after a Jeep towing a hay wagon packed with people lost control and careened down a hill, local authorities said. All 22 passengers and the driver were injured in the accident late Saturday, Maine’s OďŹƒce of State Fire Marshal said in a statement. A 17-year-old girl, who has not been identiďŹ ed, died from her injuries; two others, the jeep’s driver and a teenage boy, remain in a serious condition, the statement said. Authorities said the driver might have missed a turn as he hauled the Halloween hayride up a steep and rural road on the Gauntlet Haunted Night Ride at Harvest Hill Farms in Mechanic Falls, Maine.

Swift might have kids, if the paparazzi would leave her alone Taylor Swift might have gone off the whole idea of having kids, and it’s apparently all the paparazzi’s fault. “I don’t know if I’ll have kids, she tells InStyle. “It’s impossible not to picture certain scenarios and how you would try to convince them that they have a normal life when, inevitably, there will be strange men pointing giant cameras at them from the time they are babies. I’m guessing she’s seen the kind of emotional toll that lifestyle has taken on her cat, Olivia Benson, who she pretty much takes absolutely everywhere.

Paltrow ‘extremely unpleasant’ at her own Obama fundraiser In Los Angeles, the telltale sign of a President Obama fundraising visit has always been Roland Emmerich movie-level terrible traffic. But now we have another one: Gwyneth Paltrow smoking. The Goop guru hosted a DNC fundraiser at her Brentwood home last week, and apparently “was extremely unpleasant all day, a miffed staffer tells Radar Online. “She kept saying that she was pissed off because everything was running behind schedule. At around 10 a.m., she started drinking wine and she

was smoking cigarettes all day, the — I’m just guessing here — former catering employee says, adding that any Paltrow run-ins only happened early in the day, before staff were sternly instructed to steer clear of her. “She was walking around on her phone and talking really loud to friends, letting everyone know that the president was coming to her house, as if everyone didn’t know already. This never would’ve happened at a Martha Stewart-hosted Obama fundraiser.

Not many people called him, but one who did was singer Dan Smith. “Basically, he rang me up, expecting me to be this 60-yearold man with a beard and he was asking if I had any drum students that would be good, recalls Wood, “and I was like, ‘Nah, dude, I’ve only got two.’ And so it goes that Wood offered his own services and became the drummer for Bastille. Though the band’s success in the States has seemed rapid, there were years of struggle in

their home country. “In America, we were very fortunate in that we skipped some steps that most bands have to go through, like the stage where you are playing for 10 people at this bar, and then you drive 20 hours to play for 10 people at this other bar, he says, noting that by the time they had come to the U.S., their debut, “Bad Blood, was already a No. 1 hit in England. “In the U.K. though, we’ve seen it go from the very basic level where we were playing in pubs to where we are now.

What’s next

‘Half-finished mess’ When we speak with Wood, he’s in the kitchen of a recording studio, where the members of Bastille have just completed seven days of recording for their follow-up to 2013’s smash, “Bad Blood.â€? Wood says Bastille are tinkering with the formula that made them famous. “We’re using guitars for the very ďŹ rst time,â€? he says. “It’s really kind of just ideas right now. There are seven or eight at the moment at varying stages of completion. ... We’d love to play these songs live, but people would be like, ‘Why are you playing this half-ďŹ nished mess?’â€? The herculean effort to get a heroic body Plastic surgery. After a certain age, there’s “100 percent certainty” that stars have had work done. Between the uber-sculpted uniform of today’s Batman to the bona fide god Thor having his own franchise, pressure is ramping up on Hollywood’s leading men to look capable of the feats their characters perform. But while action stars talk up their grueling training and special diets, there may well be another kind of bodyshaping professional whose work will go unacknowledged, says Dr. Brent Moelleken. The Beverly Hills plastic surgeon took part in “Superhero Bodies,” a new documentary by RealSelf, the online community for elec-

tive surgery, about how the demands of modern superhero roles are pushing actors to their physical limits — and the effect that’s having on American men. The number of cosmetic procedures being performed on men has risen 273 percent in the last 16 years, according the American Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, with liposuction and ab-sculpting being the most common in 2013. We asked Moelleken about where reality ends and fantasy begins. How real is what’s onscreen? “Celebrities are a fantasy. And the fantasy is not just one individual; it’s a company. These celebrities are companies — they have a whole entourage that depends on maintaining that image.”

“As people enter their 30s and definitely their 40s, and with 100 percent certainty their 50s, people have to get work done to continue to look youthful and vibrant and natural. It’s inevitable.”

PLUS Quoted

Be realistic in your expectations. “We can improve on what you have, but we can’t make you into Hugh Jackman if you’re not already close to Hugh Jackman to begin with.”

“The trend toward being ultra-fit is more so there than ever. It used to be a man could get by with a pot belly and graying sideburns and look distinguished. But now that’s not enough — in order to make it in Hollywood, you have to be cut. That really mirrors what’s going on in society.”

For some stars like TV wrestlers, steroids and human growth hormone can also enter the picture. “They’re willing to do anything to succeed, and that’s an important lesson for people who are aspiring to have bodies like the superheroes: There may be a price to pay for that, in degeneration of your health, kidney problems, hip problems. Longterm steroid use is very hard on you.” EVA KIS @thisiskis

Study. Feeling sad? Comforting yourself with food doesn’t work Put down that pint of ice cream, don’t order that tub of fried chicken, and skip that impulse candy bar purchase at the register. Whatever you eat when feeling sad, it’s not working. “Individuals may be giving comfort food ‘credit’ for mood effects that would have occurred even in the absence of the comfort food,” concluded a study published in the journal Health Psychology. For “The Myth of Comfort Food” study, after filling out a questionnaire about their favorite ways to eat their feelings, subjects watched sad movies in two separate lab sessions. At the end of one session, they were offered their favorite comfort food; at the

other, they were either given a neutral food or nothing. Researchers then measured any short-term mood changes.

Their conclusion: “Although people believe that comfort foods provide them with mood benefits, comfort foods do not provide comfort beyond that of other foods (or no food).” Even those participants who believed that self-medicating with food would help were left no better off. EVA KIS

College application questions that will make you think Application season. Some schools are getting creative with their essay prompts.

University of Chicago

The college application essay is one of the only times during the admissions process where a student can showcase his or her personality. While many schools primarily focus their essay prompts on some variation of either “Why do you want to go to school here?” or “Tell us what makes you special,” some admissions offices are getting quite creative with their essay prompts. We’ve compiled some of our favorites here.

The University of Chicago has long been known for its rigorous course load and the strength of its philosophy department. Given that, it’s no surprise that all of the school’s application essay prompts encourage interested students to get a little philosophical. This option immediately stood out to us: “Little pigs, French hens, a family of bears. Blind mice, musketeers, the Fates. Parts of an atom, laws of thought, a guideline for composition. Omne trium perfectum? Create your own group of threes, and describe why and how they fit together.” Honorable mention: Incoming

Write a letter

Stanford University Stanford University wants to get to know what students are like outside of the classroom. “Write a note to your future roommate that reveals something about you or that will help your roommate — and us —know you better,” reads one prompt.

students can also choose to answer the question, “Were pH an expression of personality, what would be your pH and why?”

Honorable mention: “What matters to you and why?”

Tufts University Students are encouraged to think outside the box with these questions. / DIGITAL VISION

Tufts is known for its offbeat application questions. Last year, prospective students were asked one of the great questions of our time: “What does #YOLO mean to you?” High school seniors interested in Tufts currently have the option to “Celebrate [their] nerdy side” in 200 to 250 words. Honorable mention: “Sports, science and society are filled with rules, theories and laws like the Ninth Commandment, PV=nRT, Occam’s Razor and The Law of Diminishing Returns. Three strikes and you’re out.

In English, ‘I’ before ‘E’ except after ‘C.’ Warm air rises. Pick one and explain its significance to you.” (Editor’s note: No, we couldn’t do this in 250 words either.)

Dartmouth College Interested in applying to the Ivy League university in Hanover, New Hampshire? Dartmouth is asking prospective students to reveal some of their personality secrets. “When you

meet someone for the first time, what do you want them to know about you, but generally don’t tell them?” reads one question. Honorable mention: “Every name tells a story: Tell us about your name — any name: first, middle, last, nickname — and its origin.”

Sometimes the hardest questions to answer are also the shortest in terms of word length. “What’s your favorite word and why?” asks the University of Virginia’s Admissions Office of its applicants. (They are encouraged to answer in roughly 250 words.) Honorable mention: “To tweet or not to tweet?”

Want to be rich one day? Consider majoring in some form of engineering. According to new data from the Hamilton Project — which researches proposals that promote economic advancement — nine fields of engineering hold the Top 7 spots on its list of professions with the highest average total career earnings. Chemical engineers came first on the list, earning an average total of 2.11 million dollars. They were followed by aerospace engineers, energy engineers and computer engineers. But what about those students who don’t gravitate toward engineering? Coming in at 10th on the list is computer science, a subject that has gotten increasingly popular among undergraduates in recent years. Many colleges speculate that students — who grew up hearing that there were not enough American computer programmers out there for all of the job openings available — have decided to try to fill some of those (fairly lucrative) opportunities themselves. It’s also important to note

that this list doesn’t include students who went on to pursue a graduate degree. Economics, biochemistry and biology were tops for those who went to grad school, with many biology majors becoming doctors in the end. The Hamilton Project researchers also note the huge advantage college grads have over the general population. “The typical graduate in every college major will out-earn the typical high school graduate by at least $200,000 over the career,” they wrote. JOBS

Discomfort in the workplace doesn’t need to be negative Personal growth. Stepping out of your comfort zone can be beneficial for bosses and new hires alike.

When describing their dream position, job-seekers often speak about finding a company in which they feel comfortable. In the provocatively titled new book “The Discomfort Zone: How Leaders Turn Difficult Conversations Into Breakthroughs, management coach Marcia Reynolds argues that feeling too comfortable can stop employees from evolving. “We don’t learn anything if we don’t allow ourselves to be uncomfortable, so we stay stuck in seeing things and doing things the same way, Reynolds explains. “I always say that in the moment of discomfort, where we become uncertain of who we are and how we see the world, is the opportunity to grow. Reynolds says that taking someone out of their comfort zone is also key to breaking the patterns and defense mechanisms that often stop people from reaching their potential. We asked Reynolds to share more about how managers and employees can get the most out of her techniques.

Treat your co-workers like they’re your equals Taking criticism is tough for anyone, so it’s important to stay focused on tasks rather than personalities. “When I criticize you, your brain shuts down automatically, so

Realize what it means to be a leader “A lot of times leaders do the right thing but they don’t have the right feelings — and people can see through that, says Reynolds. She adds that everyone wants to feel respected and

Relaxation

Most Americans haven’t taken a vacation day this year It’s well-documented that Americans generally take fewer and shorter vacations than almost everyone else. But a newly released study illustrates just how vacation-starved most of us are. The travel news startup Skift found that almost 51 percent of Americans have yet to take a vacation day in 2014. And those who are taking a break from the oďŹƒce aren’t leaving for long — only 15 percent of those surveyed say they’ve taken more than 10 days o this year. Here’s another startling ďŹ nding from the survey: Regardless of age, women are the ones taking the least amount of vacation. LAKSHMI GANDHI

that doesn’t work, she says. “You’re working with people who are your partners; they’re not your children. The way to create lasting change, says Reynolds, is to ask questions, get to know the people you work with and build a deeper level of trust. “If I can ask you the right questions and you can discover yourself, not only do you learn but actually in the brain it embeds and you commit to any change or behavior, she explains. “It’s more efficient leadership. I want to help you think differently — that’s the approach.

Speak up Junior employees in particular tend to hesitate to speak up for themselves, especially

valued in the workplace. Taking the time to get to know your co-workers and helping them move up the ladder goes a long way. “If you think about it — in your life, the people who made a dierence for you are the ones that made you see yourself and the world dierently,â€? says Reynolds.

when they are upset. Although it might be nerve-wracking to think about, Reynolds encourages everyone to share their feelings with their bosses. “Sometimes people have no idea what kind of impact they have until somebody tells them, she says. “It’s really the courageous person that goes to the boss and says, ‘I don’t like when you talk to me like that.’

Patriots hold off Bills, take division lead NFL. New England improved to 4-2 on the season thanks to a 37-22 victory over the Bills in upstate New York. For the second straight week, Tom Brady looked like Tom Brady and the Patriots offense beat up a top-ranked defense. Brady found Brandon LaFell for a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter Sunday in Orchard Park, New York, as the Pats held off the Bills, 37-22, and took sole possession of first place in the AFC East. New England is 4-2 on the season and can add to its division lead as soon as this Thursday when it hosts the Jets (8:25 p.m., CBS). Buffalo cut the Patriots’ lead to eight with under six minutes remaining, and the Pats had to start a drive from their own 7-yard line — but Brady solved the Bills defense. He hit Julian Edelman for 20 yards and then dismissed a third-and-16 with a 17-yard connection to Rob Gronkowski to keep the drive alive. Two plays after the Gronkowski catch, Brady found LaFell for a 56-yard touchdown. The score cemented the win for the Pats as Brady improved his

At certain points, the Patriots looked as though they were on the verge of blowing out the Bills when Brady’s highlight reel 43-yard touchdown pass to a lunging Brian Tyms put the Pats up 20-7 early in the third quarter. But a third quarter touchdown run by Fred Jackson and Chris Hogan’s eight-yard TD grab from Kyle Orton in the fourth kept the Pats honest. Brady finished the day with four touchdown passes, zero interceptions and 361 yards through the air. Gronkowski, LaFell and Edelman all finished with over 90 yards receiving. Buffalo turned the ball over three times. Neither team had much success on the ground as the Pats finished with just 50 yards rushing and Buffalo finished with just 68 yards rushing. Isaiah Crowell finds the end zone Sunday in Cleveland’s upset win over the Steelers. / GETTY IMAGES

Browns coast, Jets struggle NFL. Cleveland is very much alive in the AFC North through six weeks of football. It’s mid-October, and the Cleveland Browns are above .500. Cleveland (3-2) stunned the rival Steelers (3-3) Sunday, winning 31-10 at home as Brian Hoyer threw for 217 yards. Jordan Cameron’s 51-yard touchdown reception from Hoyer in the second quarter put the Browns up 14-3 and they never looked back, owning a 31-3 lead late in the fourth quarter. Broncos 31, Jets 17 Peyton Manning is closing in on Brett Favre’s career touchdown pass record as the Broncos QB tossed three TD passes to beat the Jets (1-5) in

Around the NFL More scores from Week 6: •

Titans 16, Jaguars 14 Blake Bortles passed for 336 yards, but the Jags remain winless.

Panthers 37, Bengals 37 The Panthers were happy to come away with a tie as Mike Nugent’s 36-yard field goal fell wide right in OT.

Packers 27, Dolphins 24 Aaron Rodgers directed a game-winning, 60-yard scoring drive in just over two minutes in the Packers win.

Lions 17, Vikings 3 With Calvin Johnson on the shelf, the Lions defense came up big, picking off Teddy Bridgewater three times.

New Jersey. Manning is now two touchdown passes shy of Favre’s mark of 508. The Jets were within a touchdown of the Broncos late in the fourth thanks to a touchdown reception by former Broncos receiver Eric Decker, but Aqib Talib’s 22-yard interception return for a touchdown capped the day for the Broncos. Ravens 48, Buccaneers 17 Joe Flacco certainly looked like the quarterback that led Baltimore to a title two years ago on Sunday as he shredded the Buccaneers defense. Flacco threw a whopping five touchdown passes in the first half alone and Baltimore owned a 38-0 lead by halftime. Justin Forsett added 111 yards on the ground for the 4-2 Ravens.
