A 35-year-old man died on Sunday after two ATVs collided in the Bronx, according to the NYPD. Police responded to a 911 call at Bailey Avenue and 233rd Street at 6 p.m. where they discovered the men injured in the crash. Paul Rodriguez was suffering from severe head trauma and a 33-year-old man had an injury to his right leg. Rodriguez was transported to Saint Barnabas Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The 33-year-old was taken to North Central Bronx Hospital where he’s listed in stable condition. A preliminary investigation determined that the two were approaching the intersection at the same time on their Yamaha ATVs when they collided, police said. The investigation into the case is ongoing. METRO

Peel back the layers, and you have more interesting characters: co-founders who quit their jobs to educate the masses on marijuana legalization; a marijuana activist-legend; a filmmaker and a business developer.

Visit Metro.us to read and see more from the 4/20 Fight Club event. And they have more important things they’re working on than practicing handstands, re-packing their one-hitters and almost kicking oblivious passersby in the face. They’re creating a “grassroots army” behind New York Senator Liz Krueger’s

January. “For me, it’s about promoting martial arts as much as it is promoting marijuana,” said Harrison Tesoura Schultz, 31, who founded Occupy Weed Street with his girlfriend, Lorna Shannon. The group’s weekly meetings include Tuesday’s 4/20 Fight Club, and a Monday vigil outside of the Federal Reserve. Shannon can pinpoint the exact moment when she knew marijuana was worth fighting for. She was 19, living in an apartment where marijuana plants

were growing, and the police showed up. The cops didn’t find the 75 plants growing just a room away in the small apartment. “I could have been in federal prison today,” Shannon said. Fight Club is the night to let loose, do handstands, smoke and spread the word. The main event is the “toke of the week,” a premium joint smuggled back on a flight from Chicago, and dedicated to Krueger. Then, a quick meeting where Schultz talks about capoeira. Schultz continues: “I just smoked a s—load of pot, let’s smoke some more pot, and I’ll show you some capoeira.” WENDY JOAN BIDDLECOMBE Wendy.Biddlecombe@metro.us

minimum of brain activity, life cannot continue under the overwhelming pressure,” her friend Timothy Alexander Phillips wrote on Facebook. Mostrom appeared in the second season of “Scandinavia’s Next Top Model” in 2005. METRO

Bill would target trespassing at high-profile places New York. Sen. Schumer’s bill would create stiff penalties for those who trespass on federal landmarks. Sen. Charles Schumer announced a bill on Monday that would make trespassing on high-profile landmarks, such as the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge, a federal crime. Schumer announced the proposal in front of the Brooklyn Bridge. In July, two German artists claimed respon-

sibility for replacing the American flags on top of the Brooklyn Bridge with white flags. In late August, a Russian tourist was arrested for climbing the Brooklyn Bridge. “While individuals like this may have meant no harm, their acts put commuters and first respond-

ers at risk,” Schumer said. “They also inspire copycats, who may have much more evil plans in mind.” The Schumer bill would increase the maximum punishment for trespassing on such monuments to five years in jail. “When stunts like this occur, the New York City trespassing law has a maximum of one year and it’s often three months,” he said. “That’s not enough punishment to deter this behavior. It’s time to change that.” The legislation would apply to federal landmarks across the country. LUCAS VAZQUEZ @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Comptroller laments that NYC is losing the ‘rat race’ Manhattan. An audit said that the Health Department isn’t responding quickly enough to vermin complaints. Rat complaints were up last year, and according to an audit that was done by New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer, the health department needs to step up their pest control game. “This is a rat race we’re all losing and it’s one that affects our quality of life, Stringer said. “When people discover infestations in their homes and on their blocks, they expect a quick and effective response. The number of rat complaints jumped from 22,300 in 2012 to 24,586

in 2013, according to the comptroller’s office. The audit examined the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s response to rat complaints in the city from July 2011 to April 2014. A health department statement sent on Monday said they “strongly disagree with the comptroller’s audit. “We believe the auditors reached incorrect conclusions because they focused only on complaints while ignoring the fact that complaint response is a small part of the department’s overall approach to discovering where rats are present, notifying owners about how to respond, and carrying out targeted efforts to exterminate and prevent rats from reemerging, the statement read. Wrong Turn Leads to $2 Billion in Buried Treasure

Incredibly rare find is now available to the public for ONLY $79!

anzania, 1967. A prospector hiking through the sunbaked African hills realizes he is lost. He takes a left instead of a right and finds himself in a Masaai village. Red-robed warriors approach with fists clenched tight. He braces for a fight. But as soon as they open their palms, all is well. Inside are sparkling stones, the likes of which he has never seen. The man smiles and says, “Show me more.” That was how the story of tanzanite began. Today you can continue the remarkable tale with our Karatu Tanzanite Ring. Call today to bring home genuine tanzanite totaling more than 1 carat set in .925 sterling silver (a $399 value*) for ONLY $79!

7 new york Tuesday, October 14, 2014

Found in only one place on the planet. The five ovals in our Karatu Tanzanite Ring are direct relatives of those stunning original gemstones. We know this for a fact because you can’t find tanzanite anywhere else on Earth. It only exists within a 960-acre parcel of the Merelani Hills near Mt. Kilimanjaro (an area slightly larger than New York’s City’s Central Park). This historic exclusivity makes tanzanite at least 1000 times rarer than diamonds! Tanzanite gets rarer by the minute. In the decades since its discovery, tanzanite has become one of the world’s most coveted gemstones. Pieces featured in our own luxury line can sell for $1000 per carat and some retailers charge as much as $2,000 per carat! But while demand is growing, supply is limited. Even though the Tanzanian government strictly controls mining, nobody knows exactly how much

tanzanite remains. Most experts predict that the mines will run dry within our lifetime. That’s why the time to act is now. Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed. Not only have we LOWERED the price on this rare gemstone, but today you can wear the Karatu Tanzanite Ring for an extended one month trial period. That’s right, if you’re not captivated by the beauty of tanzanite, send it back within 60 days for a complete refund of your purchase price. What’s your schedule? Monday through Friday from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., I work as an overnight security guard in Rockaway, Queens. On the weekends I’m an MC for weddings, Sweet 16s and special events. My business is called Express Entertainment. I’ve been doing this for 25 years, so I’ve done baby showers for kids who weren’t born yet and then done their Sweet 16s. What’s your best quality? I just love people. Being an MC allows me to meet all sorts of different people from different cultures, and I love that. I used to work with Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz and I know [politician] Leroy Comrie. My kids get a kick out of it when politicians say hi to me. I also think that because I’m a stand-up comedian, that helps. I perform twice a month at Greenwich Village Comedy Club.

Curtis Sterling / PROVIDED

How did you get into being an MC? I have six kids from my previous marriage and I needed a way to pay child support. This was a way to make ends meet, and I couldn’t ask for a better way to do it. Now my kids are grown, but I’m still doing it. The child support is over, but I was like, what do I do now? ... Entertainment saved my life. It really did. You don’t get involved in heavy drinking or anything stupid because you always have to be on point to entertain.

US must rethink Ebola strategy, says CDC chief Virus. The infection of the Dallas nurse is the second known to have occurred outside West Africa. The case of a Dallas nurse who contracted Ebola while caring for a dying patient shows the United States needs to rethink how it addresses infection control as an outbreak of the virus spreads beyond West Africa, a top U.S. health official said on Monday. Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said authorities are investigating how the nurse, Nina Pham, became infected caring for Thomas Eric Duncan in an isolation ward at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. Duncan died last week and Pham is the first person to contract the virus on U.S. soil, taking concerns about containing its spread to new heights. She is “clinically stable,” Frieden said, and the CDC is monitoring others involved in Duncan’s care in case they show symptoms. “The care of Ebola is hard. We’re working to make it safer and easier,” Frieden told reporters. Frieden also apologized for remarks on Sunday, when the nurse’s infection was first disclosed, that suggested she was responsible for a breach in protocols that exposed her to the virus. Some health care experts said the comments failed to address deep gaps in training. REUTERS

Spain to increase Ebola training Spain will ramp up training for health workers and emergency services dealing with Ebola cases, authorities said on Monday, as a nurse who caught the virus in Madrid after caring for infected patients remained seriously ill. Recriminations are flying in Spain over whether hospitals were prepared

enough to deal with Ebola cases, after 44-year-old Teresa Romero last week became the first person in the current outbreak to catch the deadly virus outside of Africa. A broader training program is being developed, said health care academic Fernando Rodriguez Artalejo, who is part of a scientific committee advising the government. REUTERS

Bamboo scaffolding 13 feet high was erected along one major thoroughfare, while groups of demonstrators mixed concrete to pour over the foundations of their road blocks. “This shows our determination to fight for democracy,” said Bert Tseng, a university stu-

dent who has been a part of the protests for the past two weeks. Earlier in the day, a group of angry taxi drivers opposed to the protests, which have seriously affected their business, had rallied at one barricaded road, demanding an end to the disruptions. REUTERS

Delicate surgery

Conjoined twins to take first step to separation surgery Conjoined 6-month-old twin girls will begin to undergo tissue expansion this month to stretch skin that will be used to cover patches of their bodies when they are separated in a surgery planned for December.

The tissue expansion for Knatalye Hope Mata and Adeline Faith Mata is expected to take six to eight weeks. The girls are joined at the abdomen and share a liver, diaphragm, pelvis, intestines and the lining of the heart. “When I think about December I get that sick feeling in my stomach. I want to know how much pain they are going to feel

after. What is it going to be like for them?” said their mother, Elysse Mata.

“They are where they should be developmentally. They reach up for toys, they reach out for us when we get close and talk to them,” she said. The girls were born via cesarean section at nearly eight months’ gestation and will be separated at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston by a team of surgeons in a long and arduous procedure. Tech. Snapsaved.com claims hackers stole saved Snapchat images

Leaked photos could become problematic for Snapchat, which is one of a crop of fast-growing apps that compete with Facebook and Twitter, but have faced criticism over privacy. / GETTY IMAGES

Snapsaved.com, a website which allows users to save images sent via Snapchat, claimed on Monday that hackers had breached its servers and made off with some 500 megabytes of photographs. The claim by the little-known website sheds some light on reports in past days that hackers were preparing to unleash some 13 gigabytes of photographs sent via Snapchat, a mobile app popular among teenagers that promises users that any pictures relayed to other users will be deleted in a matter of seconds. However, users can employ special websites and third-party apps like Snapsaved.com to save images they receive on their smartphones, with or without the sender’s and Snapchat’s knowledge. Snapchat last week blamed third-party apps, which can be downloaded separately and used in conjunction with its service, for any photos that may have been stolen or leaked. The prospect that a torrent of photos will be

made publicly available via an indexed, online database has raised concerns about potentially racy images of minors. On Monday, Snapsaved.com said on its Facebook page that it deleted its entire website and database as soon as it discovered the intrusion. It was unclear who wrote the post on Snapsaved.com’s Facebook page, which has been active since 2013. The website itself remains down. While apparently owning up to a cybersecurity breach, the website said that hackers’ threats, posted anonymously on online forums, to release a barrage of images in what media reports have dubbed a “snappening” had in fact been overstated. “Snapchat has not been hacked, and these images do not originate from their database,” the Facebook post read. It was unclear why Snapsaved.com thought the threat was a hoax nor how it knew whether Snapchat had been hacked. REUTERS

“The recent rumors about the ‘snappening’ are a hoax. The hacker does not have sufficient information to live up to his claims of creating a searchable database.” Snapsaved.com Facebook post

Things to know before you get rich Now that I teach people how to trade successfully in the stock market, I learned that showing off a little inspires students to work harder on their studies, so I take pride in my humble brags. But I wish I’d known these three things before I got rich and splurged.

Lesson No. 1: Lamborghinis are a pain I have a Lamborghini that cost nearly $250,000, but while I was driving my friend’s Jeep Cherokee recently, I wished I could switch cars. Sure, everyone stares and takes pictures

of my car, and it’s the best tool for inspiring students, but it’s also annoying! In Miami, I have to pay $80 to $100 to park it out front everywhere for easier access. And don’t get me started about miles-pergallon and the $3,000 it cost to replace a side-view mirror. The worst is that taking road trips will make your back ache for a week!

Lesson No. 2: The bigger the mansion, the more problems A few years ago, I bought a 7,000-square-foot mansion.

I had tons of room, but every day there was a new problem. When you consider all the insect issues, electrical problems, security costs and other problems that required a house manager for a while (until he quit due to all the issues), having a big mansion is just not worth it.

Lesson No. 3: Talking about your money is taboo I understand that many people in this world have so little, but I only bring up my wealth because I teach

And the best way to get the word out is to show off my money and the lifestyle it can buy. I can correct my mistakes — I’ll ditch my Lamborghini soon, and I’ve already gotten rid of the mansion — but it’s time more successful people talked like this, as I wish somebody had told me all of this before I got rich.

The U.S. stock markets have begun to fade. I warned about this two weeks ago, and thousands of people have thanked me for doing so.

Kat Dennings is dating … Josh Groban?

CULTURE

REALLY? ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES

Well, this one certainly caught me completely off-guard. Adorable and hilarious “Thor” and “2 Broke Girls” star Kat Dennings hit the red carpet at a charity event in L.A. this weekend with her new boyfriend … Josh Groban. No, seriously. Dennings even posted an Instagram pic of the pair with the caption, “I ship it.” Now, if I’m up on my Internet lingo, that should mean that they’re not actually a couple but Dennings is eager to write fan-fiction about them being a couple. Wait, that’s

Today, Roseanne Barr has an idea, Stephen Fry is in a bit of a pickle and Paris Hilton is a tough critic. @therealroseanne: once again i will tell u the way to fix everything that is wrong in the world @stephenfry: Advice urgently sought. Put hand cream on my face without reading label. If I put face cream on my hands will it compensate, or am I doomed? @ParisHilton: Just saw the movie Annabelle. It was so brutal & boring. Not scary at all. It was so bad that I walked out.

This one is just dripping with sophistication: Michael Lohan, “Girls Gone Wild,” courtroom drama — it’s practically ripped from the scripts of “Downton Abbey”! So here’s the deal: The elder Lohan finds himself in trouble for failing to respond to a lawsuit from a man he duped into loaning him $25,000 for a venture to dub the “Girls Gone Wild” videos into Spanish. Richard Reitano initially sued Lohan for the original investment plus interest as well as $1 million for his hurt feelings, but Lohan never responded to the lawsuit. And it’s not like him to keep his mouth shut. So Reitano dropped the million and had a judge take another look at it, and now Lohan has to pay

How dare John Cleese insult Taylor Swift’s cat!

4 I know I should try to not mention Taylor Swift or her cats every day, but this one is too much fun. Because Monty Python vet John Cleese is saying what we’re all thinking: Olivia Benson looks weird. During a shared interview on “The Graham Norton Show,” Cleese responded to a pic of the cat by asking, “How did it have the accident?” confounding Swift. “Is that a proper cat or is it damaged? That’s the weirdest cat I’ve ever seen in my life.” He also makes a subtle dig at Swift’s habit

not what it means, is it? Jargon confusion aside, apparently this is real. A source even told E! News that “they were so cute together,” which is pretty much legally binding in Hollywood. To be fair, though, Groban has enough of a track record with impressive girlfriends — January Jones and, allegedly, Katy Perry — that at this point I’m willing to dub him the nice-guy alternative to David Spade. Why did I pick David Spade here? Simple: Spade’s history of punching above his weight class, so to speak, is legendary.

@Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.us

Meet Sergei Kholodovskii, and then hate him A Russian techie named Sergei Kholodovskii insists he’s the man behind a website circulating the hundreds of leaked celebrity nude photos — and he has zero shame, according to the Sun, because he didn’t do the initial hacking: “All the pictures were taken from open sources. We are not using any secret or hacked stuff here,” says Kholodovskii, who doesn’t “see anything wrong with” posting hacked nudes. “If somebody is unhappy to the point of taking action to sue us? Well, we’ll just shut down the website and that will be it.” I think Jennifer Lawrence would beg to differ on that last point. Kholodovskii, by the way, describes himself as a 28-year-old thrill-seeker who has a Porsche and a poledancing wife. And if that hasn’t made up your mind about him, he has a response to actresses

like Lawrence who take issue with their property being stolen and distributed: “I would not call it sex abuse. These pictures are good PR for these celebrities,” he insists. “Some of them were not that [well] known before. Now people are talking about them.” A real charmer, isn’t he?

of carrying Ms. Benson around in public, telling her — quite pointedly — that he didn’t bring his cat to the show because “it didn’t want to come.” It’s

deliciously awkward. Look it up online. Also look up the funny (but kind of nasty things) Cleese said about his Monty Python cofounders.

That’s Dame Angelina Jolie to you — unless you’re in the U.K., confusingly enough. Jolie headed to Buckingham Palace last week to meet Queen Elizabeth II and become an honorary dame for her work fighting sexual violence and assisting U.K. foreign policy. The award

she received is a bit of a mouthful: Honorary Dame Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George. But since Jolie is not a British citizen, she can’t officially be addressed as a dame in the U.K. But I’m not going to let that stop me.

BOOKS

The teen in Ann M. Martin’s new book doesn’t babysit Young readers. “The Baby-Sitter’s Club” author is releasing a new book for preteens — and it isn’t what you might expect. If you were a teen girl in the ’80s or ’90s, you know exactly who Ann M. Martin is. As the author and creator of “The BabySitters Club” series, her name is on well over 131 books. Martin just released a new book for preteens, “Rain Reign,” about a young girl with autism who is obsessed with homonyms. The book marks

a darker turn for Martin, tackling weighty topics such as alcoholism and class conflict. We asked the author about how her writing has changed over the years as well as her “other” book series. Was writing from the perspective of a character with autism challenging? Yes, but it was absolutely the way I wanted to tell ll the story. I had d been waiting to write a character with h autism for a long time. Back in the ’70s, I spent the summers between my semesters

My friend teaches at a school for autistic children, so I was able to visit the school and observe the kids and teachers. lot of them were weightier topics. So in many cases, the serious topics were included because readers had asked for them. If you were to start ‘The Baby-Sitters Club’ series today, would you integrate social media and modern technology? Yes, absolutely. It would

make the girls more contemporary. We actually reissued the first eight books a few years ago and slightly updated them, but we decided incorporating social media and cellphones would involve way too much rewriting. Have you had to change the way you write for

preteens over the years? I think more of what has changed about my writing has been personal growth. I write much slower, and I consider every single word more carefully than I did before. EMILY LAURENCE @EmLaurence

Do You Suffer from

If you’re watching the pilot for NBC’s new comedy “Marry Me, you might want to keep track of just how many proposals take place. Leads Jake and Annie are very in love but have a bit of trouble taking that next step. The show, from “Happy Endings creator David Caspe, stars Casey Wilson as Annie, and “The State regular

Ken Marino as Jake. We checked in with Marino about what to expect from his show. In the pilot, Annie and Jake have some relationship issues. How will they get past them? I think they work through it in the pilot. Annie gets hung up on signs. By the end of the episode, spoiler alert, it all works out. I don’t think she’s concerned about signs in future episodes. As a matter of fact, I know she’s not concerned about signs in future episodes, because we’ve shot seven or eight already. ‌ In the episodes to come, we have slightly different issues. What kinds of issues? It’s not a show about “Will they or won’t they?â€? ... That’s not what the show is ultimately about. Really, it’s a show about a couple that gets engaged and they enter the next chapter of their lives and how they and their friends and their family all deal with that. It becomes more of an ensemble comedy.

“Marry Me premieres tonight at 9 p.m. on NBC. / COLLEEN HAYES, NBC

Well, it’s right there in the title. Seems like they’re going to work it out. Yeah. You know, a lot of people ask, well, is it a romantic comedy “will they/won’t theyâ€? kind of thing? They will. So you’re just conďŹ rming it now, early on. I feel confident that they will. Unless I get on David and Casey’s bad side. Uh-oh. They could replace you. Annie decides she wants out. With comedians such as Casey Wilson and Tim Meadows involved, is there a lot of improv? They write such funny and tight scripts, but David definitely wants us to open things up and play. ... I think David’s theory is, best joke wins. So when you’re in the editing room, if some improv just landed really well, he’ll put that in. LISA WEIDENFELD @LisaWeidenfeld lisa.weidenfeld@metro.us

Hope for ‘Happy Endings’ fans Is the tone similar to ‘Happy Endings’? I think it’s going to have a lot of the joke-perminute style of “Happy Endings. Maybe pull back on that a bit and replace [it] with a bit more sweetness between Casey and me and exploring their relationship as a couple. What I love about the show is that I think it’s going to be super funny and also have some heart, but then cuts that saccharine with some pretty subversive jokes.

Vera Farmiga loves her cast mates Interview. The “Judge actress really likes the challenge of acting with the greats. Vera Farmiga joins a cast with a very deep bench in “The Judge, playing the high school sweetheart of Robert Downey Jr.’s Hank, a hot-shot lawyer and prodigal son who returns home to defend his father (Robert Duvall) in court.

VERA FARMIGA PLAYS ONE OF ROBERT DOWNEY JR.’S OLD FLAMES IN “THE JUDGE. WIREIMAGE

The cast in this is kind of ridiculous. I know, I know. It’s firstclass. It’s what you ache for as an actor, is to be surrounded by greatness — because it lifts your game. And you learn, and you want to watch them, you respect them so much. They may seem daunting, but if there’s any skittishness or nerves you get over it very quickly because of their sensibilities as human beings. They’re very approachable. They’re very open, they’re humble. I spent more time with Downey than I did with Duvall, and yeah he’s this uber rock star, but he’s got a real sense of vulnerability and openness — and even insecurity at times. You know that mega-persona? You don’t feel that when you meet them. And I think what makes them great actors is they’re storytellers. It’s not about them, it’s about telling the best possible story. There’s not much time to wallow in any insecurity. You’re no slouch yourself. I’ve got a couple notches on my belt as well. But this is what you hunger for. Whether you’re working with a heavyweight champion or whether you’re working with a welterweight, it has to do with openness and humility. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.us

Chemistry

Getting down with Downey You and Downey have some great chemistry. It’s not something that just happens. It can be, but I think it is a skill that you hone, which comes from listening to each other, provoking each other, responding. How does one provoke Robert Downey Jr.? Surprises, he likes surprises. Improvisation actually scares me. I prefer scripted improvisation. When the camera is o, I don’t mind tooling around and then taking what works in that improvised rehearsal and then scripting it. But he’s so loose, so carefree, so inventive that it’s really challenging in a scene. He doesn’t like repeating moments. He’s conďŹ dent enough to know if a camera has got a certain take, try something dierent. His character doesn’t come o so great when he assumes you’re still a waitress when you had, in fact, bought the restaurant. Yeah, that’s fun, huh? [Laughs] Sure, he comes, thinks he’s hot s—. Big city lawyer, nothing’s changed. He’s got his head so far up his own ass that he at-out doesn’t inquire. It’s all about Hank.

Q&A STEVE CARELL ON A VERY GOOD DAY The “Alexanderâ€? actor talks about kids with iPhones and his upcoming ďŹ lm, “Foxcatcher.â€?

STEVE CARELL GETTY IMAGES

Steve Carell has been busy promoting both the familyfriendly Disney film “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and Bennett Miller’s gritty true-life drama “Foxcatcher, which wowed at Cannes and Toronto and

hits theaters next month. Luckily, Carell hasn’t had any trouble keeping the two films straight. All the kids in “Alexander have iPhones, which struck me as odd, but then I don’t have children. Is there a right age for that? It’s different for different people. As far as my family, we have limits. I think you have to have limits and you have to put parameters on that sort of usage. You want your kids to be engaged

Steve Carell is having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad time in “Alexander. / DALE ROBINETTE

There must be a lot of peer pressure once other kids have them. Yeah, certainly. Technology’s changed a lot. Since I was a kid, the world is upside down, technologically. I think parents are just navigating uncharted territory at this point.

with other human beings — that’s always a nice thing. Our daughter got her cell phone when she was 12. So when she entered seventh grade, she got a cell phone. And I think that’s fairly common. I think for a while it was 16 or even older, but I think all of her friends at this point have cell phones. They’re not allowed to use them in class or anything, they’re really there for emergencies — “I need to come home, pick me up kind of stuff.

My mom got me a pager when I was in high school. And now I know exactly when you grew up. [Laughs] Because the lifespan of pagers was not a long one.

It lasted longer than MiniDiscs. Oh yeah. I’m sure they don’t make MiniDiscs anymore. I’ve heard, though, that vinyl is making a comeback, that digital music has sort of peaked and that vinyl is making a huge surge right now. I always loved album artwork. That’s sort of a lost art, what album covers look like and just the feel of it. NED EHRBAR @Nedrick ned.ehrbar@metro.lu

You’ve also been promoting “Foxcatcher,â€? out later this fall, which is a very grown-up, Oscar-friendly drama. How do questions for the two ďŹ lms dier? Well, I mean, the movies

are just so tonally dierent, and one is based on a true story.

“Alexander isn’t a true story? It could be! I’m not saying it’s not a true story. [Laughs] Certainly the questions I think we’re go-

ing to be asked are dierent. The whole approach to it is dierent. This is light, fun family entertainment, and it’s a comedy. And “Foxcatcherâ€? isn’t. But yeah, just the tone. One is a lighthearted romp and one isn’t. It’s up to you to decide which is which.

Altitude adjustment Red Mountain Resort. A city girl heads for Utah’s hills to ďŹ nd zen.

Day 3

PLUS

Make a friend

When the invitation to Utah’s Red Mountain Resort came in June, I was on a crammed subway train in the depth of summer — the furthest possible place from relaxation. But arriving at the resort, which sits on a lava field at the foot of the eponymous red peaks, is not unlike stepping onto an arena stage. It’s inspiring; you want to rise to the occasion. I would find a way to relax.

Day 1: Doing nothing With that promise, I left my phone in airplane mode and sought my zen in nothingness. With no buildings towering over the practically Martian landscape, it was perfectly possible to imagine that civilization was happening somewhere far away (in reality, the resort is a few minutes’ drive from the nearest town). With total silence, the din in one’s own head can be sorted — I recommend the quiet back patio of the onsite Canyon Breeze restaurant, where no one rushes you.

Result: Abandoning my routine — and phone — was too easy. I relaxed, but achieved little else.

Day 2: Doing everything Much of our stress is selfimposed, so I reasoned that keeping my body busy would quiet everything else. The resort’s daily activity schedule is enough to make you feel like you’d run a mile just reading it, from a billy goat-suited endurance hike to kayaking and even a burlesque workshop. My morning walk through the lava field was followed by a spectacular five-hour hike in Zion National Park, first up to Echo Canyon and then down to the

Does relaxation happen when we stop pushing ourselves and focus on nurturing instead? To that end, I started the day with bacon, which sits alongside the chia bowls in keeping with the resort’s ethos about not depriving its guests (the restaurant has a full bar, as well as pressed juices). The Gentle Yoga class eased the tightness from the hike, while Full Body Melt worked out the knots in the legs and back using a foam roller. Book a Melting Honey Hot Stone Treatment at Sagestone Salon & Spa around sunset and arrive early to enjoy the view from the panoramic windows. End the day with a half-hour meditation on your feather-soft bed.

Red Mountain Resort has partnered with the Ivins City Animal Shelter for a Pound Puppy Hike. Resort guests can take a friendly shelter dog on a guided 3- to 4-mile hike through St. George Valley and Padre Canyon. And if you ďŹ nd yourself unwilling to say goodbye to your companion, adoption is encouraged — they’ve arranged 50 so far! www.petďŹ nder.com/ shelters/UT74.html

Result: Though cardio and vegetables are necessary, an easy (but not lazy) day seems to be the key to zen.

It’s not only a great way to spend time together, but it teaches children what goes into food and how to measure, which makes learning about numbers interactive. You can even sneakily help sharpen their reading skills by having them read the recipe aloud. It also helps kids establish independence: They’ll take pride in mixing the batter by themselves or measuring out the ingredients. Here, we highlight three of the festive ideas. How to play Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1-9. There is no math involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

If you want Corporations change, vote! are parasites Election Day is fast approaching and is a day all registered American voters should step up to the plate and vote for the candidates of their choice. We need to vote for those candidates and those issues that best serve the city, state and local communities. But there are those who say, “My vote doesn’t count, or “The candidates elected will only maintain the status quo of the rich and powerful and line their pockets.” There are those who are running for office who want to make a difference and honestly want to help those who are hurting. But this is not going to happen if we don’t vote.

What’s new in today’s world? Corporate inversions. Congress estimates that inversions will cost the Treasury almost $20 billion over the next 10 years. We know how conservatives feel about individuals who take advantage of government programs they’re legally entitled to. But when it comes to corporations who screw the government while still enjoying all the benefits, they say things like, “The company is more competitive when it puts its headquarters overseas.” ROBERT LAROSA, VIA EMAIL

Manning: ‘I am more concerned with Victor’ NFL. The Giants were more worried about the health of their teammate than how they will replace him. The Giants had the twin gut punches of a humiliating defeat and devastating injury to deal with Monday. But for one day, the team was more concerned with Victor Cruz’s health than replacing his offensive production. Quarterback Eli Manning noted he’s yet to actually talk to Cruz, but texted him prior to Monday’s conference call, said as of right now, all he’s thinking about is Cruz the man, not the player. “I’m more worried about Victor than the team or how we’ll be able to manage,” said Manning. Cruz was released from Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia early Monday afternoon and was transferred to the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York for more tests. The surgery will likely take place there. “My only concern is the individual,” Manning said. “I am not worried about our team or the season or how we will be able to manage. Injuries are tough. It is a tough part of football. Playing this game, [injuries] happen. You just hate that it happened to Victor because he loves playing this game.” Manning said he had already spoken to the training staff about Cruz’s recovery period and rehabilitation, saying he knew Cruz would “work his tail off” to come back from the injury as soon as possible. “Victor Cruz is a very, very positive and popular young man who has meant an awful lot to this franchise, just by virtue of his work ethic and the fact that he is a Pro Bowl playmaker,” head coach Tom Coughlin said. “But again, it is another test

The Giants have two options for replacing Cruz in the slot, but it appeared Coughlin was leaning toward Odell Beckham Jr. •

“Obviously, [moving Beckham] will become a topic with the offensive coaches, but that hasn’t been decided,” Coughlin said. “Nor has there been a lot of time spent on that at this point.” Coughlin mentioned Preston Parker’s “ball security issue” as why he may be passed over.

for the team. I was going to say the offensive side of the ball, but really for our team.” As Coughlin alluded to, the injury was felt on both sides of the ball Sunday night. Safety and fellow team captain Antrel Rolle was one of the first players to come to Cruz when

he was on the ground in the end zone. And the defense as a whole was just as affected by a universally loved teammate suffering a season-ending injury. “The story of this season has not been written yet,” said defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka. “Losing an individual like Victor for the season this early — that’s going to be tough. This is a turning point in the season, something we have to grow up from real quick … but I say that there’s no desperation here, just disappointment.” Despite a minor firestorm over gloating Twitter comments by Philadelphia sports radio host Mike Missanelli — which he later dubiously claimed were not about the injury — even the players on the Eagles were disappointed with the injury. “You never want to see that,” said Eagles cornerback Brandon Boykin, who was covering Cruz on the play. “I love playing Victor every single year. It’s always a great matchup between us and I hope he has a speedy recovery.” TONY WILLIAMS @TBone8 sports@metro.us

Ryan: Geno Smith was ‘a great pick’ NFL. The Jets head coach was asked about the team’s last two drafts considering the team’s struggles. Jets head coach Rex Ryan isn’t ready to hand out an A-plus grade to this year’s draft class quite yet. Ryan, who infamously doled out an A-plus to general manager John Idzik’s first draft last season, admitted Monday this year’s version hasn’t lived up to the billing. “This year’s class didn’t have the pop that last year’s had,” Ryan said Monday in a rare bit of criticism. Of course, many fans feel the jury is still out on Idzik’s first class. But Ryan again delivered praise to the class Monday, despite the struggles of two of its marquee names — firstrounder Dee Milliner and second-rounder Geno

The left guard has started all six games this season, however, Oday Aboushi has seen extended time during games and replaced him in the fourth quarter against Denver. He’s the likely long-term replacement for Winters. “It’s especially tough for me because me and Brian trained together

Milliner, Winters done for or season due to serious injuries The Jets confirmed the expected bad news about Sunday’s injuries to cornerback Dee Milliner and offensive lineman Brian Winters by placing them on season-ending injured reserve Monday. Milliner suffered an injury to his right Achilles tendon when rushing the edge on the Broncos’ field goal on the opening drive.
