Staten Island. Members of the NYC Liberian community said they are afraid for people back home and that the city must be prepared. Another day, another Ebola scare in New York City. And though the very-real threat lingers, there still haven’t been any confirmed cases in the city. According to the city’s Department of Hygiene and Mental Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s most

recent numbers, 88 potential cases were reported by health care providers as of Oct. 6. Of those 88 cases, only 11 met the risk criteria; one patient tested negative and the remaining were diagnosed with illnesses such as malaria. “It happened in Texas, it can happen here,” said Oretha Bestman-Yates, president of the Staten Island Liberian Community Association. “It just took that one infected person to get on that plane to come.” Clifton, Staten Island, is home to the largest Liberian community outside of Africa. And while the virus is spreading in other West African countries such as Sierra Leone and Guinea, Bestman-Yates said Libe-

ria, with more than 2,300 deaths so far according to the World Health Organization, is the “face of Ebola.” Bestman-Yates she said she was recently at an airport when a reporter called to talk about Ebola. “People moved away from me,” she said, when she mentioned Liberia on the phone. And though media attention has other hurtful effects for Liberians in New York, Bestman-Yates believes the attention is an educational opportunity. “We have to be prepared for the worst, we can’t assume it won’t come here,” Bestman-Yates said. NYC. Bellevue has unit for Ebola patients

The New York City Department of Hygiene and Mental Health and Health and Hospitals Corporation announced earlier this week that Bellevue Hospital will primarily serve any Ebola patients in the future. The country’s oldest public hospital, on First Avenue between 26th and

28th streets, has a special unit to treat patients with the virus. The city’s private and public hospitals continue to run Ebola drills. A “buddy system” is being used at the city’s public hospitals, according to HHC, to make sure health care workers stick to “infection control

protocol.” On Monday, two patients tested negative for Ebola at Bellevue, according to the HHC. The HHC maintains health care workers and first responders have received Ebola training and supplies to deter contamination since July. METRO

Affected

Not a joking matter Paul Tuider, president of the Liberian Communities of New York, said many Liberians he knows don’t like the heightened media attention. “Our image is at stake,” Tuider said, adding his young niece, born in America, is the subject of “Ebola jokes” at school, and adults are the subject of negative comments at work. With all the perceptions in New York, Tuider said the main concern of many Liberians is raising money to send back home to their family members there. “We’re hoping with the great help of the government it won’t spread. … Hopefully the international community will help stop it,” Tuider said. NYC. After decades in prison, man freed at prosecutor’s request Nearly three decades into a prison sentence he began as a teenager, a man who was championed by boxer Rubin “Hurricane Carter walked free on Wednesday after a judge vacated his murder conviction at a prosecutor’s request. David McCallum was 16 years old in 1986 when a jury in Brooklyn found him and Willie Stuckey, Jr. guilty of kidnapping and murdering Nathan Blenner. McCallum, now 45, had been in a state prison ever since. Stuckey died in prison in 2001. After reviewing their cases, Ken Thompson, Brooklyn’s district attorney, asked Judge Matthew D’Emic to quash the convictions, saying both men’s confessions were false and contradicted by evidence. Sitting beside Stuckey’s mother, McCallum sobbed, as the judge said he and Stuckey were exonerated. “I’m very, very happy

The weather outside may still be warm, but Rockefeller Center recently opened its ice skating rink for the winter season. This marks the ďŹ rst season that people can buy an unlimited skating pass that allows them to bypass the line to skate at the rink. The rink will be open through April 2015. The iconic rink was ďŹ rst opened in 1936 and more than a quarter million people hit the ice there every year.

McCallum said he was not bitter, but called the justice system “brokenâ€? and said he planned to speak out on the issue of wrongful convictions. •

Rubin Carter, the former professional boxer who spent 19 years in prison on what was later ruled a wrongful murder conviction, became an advocate for McCallum, and before his death in April, said it was his ďŹ nal wish that McCallum be released.

Spread. Although the risk for other passengers was low, the CDC said the nurse should not have been traveling. A second Texas nurse who contracted Ebola flew on a commercial flight from Ohio to Texas with a slight temperature the day before she was diagnosed, health officials said on Wednesday, raising new concerns about U.S. efforts to control the disease. Chances that other passengers on the plane were infected were very low, but the nurse should not have been traveling on the flight, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Dr. Thomas Frieden told reporters.

The woman, Amber Vinson, 29, was isolated immediately after reporting a fever on Tuesday, Texas Department of State Health Services officials said. She had treated Liberian patient Thomas Eric Duncan, who died of Ebola on Oct. 8 and was the first patient diagnosed with the virus in the United States. Monday, officials said. In Washington, President Barack Obama said the likelihood of a widespread Ebola outbreak was “very, very low. But he pledged a more aggressive response to U.S. Ebola cases from federal officials and to do everything possible to ensure no more health care workers are infected. Obama met with Cabinet officials to discuss the government’s response to the Ebola situation after canceling a planned political trip to New Jersey and Connecticut. Government officials said Vinson was being transferred to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, which has successfully treated two people who contracted the disease in West Africa and were flown back to the U.S. REUTERS

Time Warner to launch HBO web streaming Strategy. It could be a further catalyst spurring people to dump their cable subscriptions. Time Warner Inc.’s HBO will launch a stand-alone online streaming service next year to make hit shows such as “Game of Thrones” available to people who do not subscribe to cable television. The move to take HBO “over-the-top” — media jargon that means consumers can watch the channel with only a broadband connection — is a significant milestone for a channel long dependent on cable distributors. HBO’s chief executive, Richard Plepler, announced the move during an investor day on Wednesday where Time

Warner’s other top executives laid out plans to boost the company’s growth. Plepler cited that 10 million homes in the United States are broadband-only, without cable subscriptions. Half of those homes subscribe to streaming video services. “These consumers have no access to HBO. It’s a large opportunity that should not be untapped,” he said. Netflix Inc. shares were down 3.1 percent at $435.28 after the announcement. “In 2015 we will go beyond the wall and launch a stand-alone, over-the-top service with the potential to produce hundreds of millions in revenue,” Plepler said. Plepler did not disclose further details about the forthcoming service, including the price. HBO currently allows cable subscribers to access its content on mobile devices through an app known as HBO Go. REUTERS

Drop. Gasoline prices have fallen more than 50 cents this year since peaking at $3.696 in April. Regular gasoline in the U.S. fell to the lowest level in more than three-and-ahalf years as shale oil production and weak global demand spurred a fourmonth slump in oil prices. U.S. drivers are reaping the benefit of strong global crude production and weak demand causing oil prices to drop more than a quarter since June. “That’s like somebody putting dollars right in your pocket, said David Hackett, president of Stillwater Associates, an energy consulting firm in Irvine, California. “That sounds like Christmas presents, going out to dinner, being able to do something.

The average retail price fell 0.9 cents a gallon to $3.177, Heathrow, Floridabased motoring group AAA said on its website Wednesday. That’s the lowest level since February 2011, when the uprising started against Muammar GaddaďŹ that disrupted oil supplies from OPEC member Libya.

Global oil consumption will increase by about 650,000 barrels a day this year, the Paris-based International Energy Agency said in a monthly report on Tuesday. Sentencing awaits. Steenkamp cousin testifies at Pistorius hearing A cousin of Reeva Steenkamp broke down at the sentencing hearing of Oscar Pistorius as she recounted hearing on her car radio that the Olympic athlete had killed his girlfriend. Proceedings at the High Court in Pretoria, South Africa’s capital, were adjourned briefly before Kim Martin resumed describing how she tried to call Steenkamp before realizing that she was the person Pistorius had shot dead. Martin was the first witness called by prosecutor Gerrie Nel at the hearing to determine what sentence Pistorius should receive for his conviction of manslaughter for the killing of Steenkamp at his home on Valentine’s Day last year. Martin said Steenkamp and Pistorius weren’t very affectionate when she had breakfast with them the previous month. “His phone rang and he got up and left the table to answer the call. And

when he walked away, I said to Reeva, ‘So cuz, are you happy?’” Martin said. “She had a smile on her face and she pulled her shoulders up like this and she said ‘Yes, but we need to talk.’” Martin said she never forgave herself for not asking Reeva what she meant. She described the Steenkamp family as

always short of money. As she testified, Steenkamp’s father, Barry, broke down in tears. Masipa cleared Pistorius of murder charges before convicting him of culpable homicide for killing Steenkamp when he fired four bullets through a bathroom door. Pistorius said he thought Steenkamp was an intruder. REUTERS

How can home cooks make their dishes more flavorful? Campanaro: Use quality ingredients — go to a specialty Italian food store and source really great olive oil from Tuscany, or ParmigianoReggiano from EmiliaRomagna. It will cost you a little more, but it makes all the difference in the end product. Hardy: The majority of home cooks need three upgrades when I walk into

Next time, throw away the iodized, spend as much on a bottle of olive oil as you do on a bottle of wine, and splurge on cookware — it can last a lifetime. When it comes to food, Mo Rocca knows when to defer to others’ expertise: As host of “My Grandmother’s Ravioli” on the Cooking Channel, he learns the recipes of families across the country in their own kitchens. But this weekend at the New York City Wine

The city’s unofficial street food has been enjoying a renaissance, moving into restaurants and gaining some gourmet — and offbeat — toppings. We caught up with the former “Daily Show” correspondent for a taste of the tasting event. (Hot tip: Take a trip to Mexico to find truly “extravagant” hot dogs.) First of all, why hot dogs? What’s harder, being funny or cooking a good meal? Cooking a good meal requires the right ingredients, a decent recipe, steady hands and

You know, that old story. While he’s been getting sick, his friends have been worried sick. “He has been worrying everyone for quite some time now, a source tells Radar Online. “Those close to him have urged him to slow down. I’m not familiar with what living by the “seam of your pants is, exactly, but hey, language is a fluid beast. Boot and rally, Harry. Boot and rally.

Justin Simien sparks debate Interview. The director of the provocative “Dear White People” talks reactions good and bad.

It’s been weird, man. [Laughs] It’s been nine years on this project in particular, and for it to come together and for people to be actually interested in talking to me

a lot of conversations — and more than a few Spike Lee comparisons.

Can you sum up how the past nine months of your life have felt?

Writer and director Justin Simien has been getting plenty of attention since his debut feature, “Dear White People,” opened at Sundance in January and snapped up the Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent. The film takes a fun, satirical look at race relations on a contemporary Ivy League campus and has sparked

What do you think of the possibly somewhat reductive Spike Lee comparisons? I mean, it is lazy, but I have to say it’s also really flattering because Spike’s my hero. And the movies they’re referencing, “School Daze” and “Do the Right Thing,” are iconic films for me as a filmmaker and as a black person who likes movies. I don’t think people are comfortable saying, “Oh, this is the new Bergman” — which I’m not, by the way. But I think it naturally occurs to people that filmmakers of color go in one category, and gay filmmakers and women go here, and everybody else is just cinema in general. [Laughs] And they can be compared to all kinds of people. On a certain level, I totally get it and welcome it. But on another level, I’d love to see what people think of me after I have a couple of films under my belt. Like, what is a Justin Simien film? I only made one, so it’s hard to say.

Caroline de Maigret: ‘Anyone can be Parisian’ “People praise the effortlessness of French women, but they don’t realize that it’s actually an effort to look effortless,” says Caroline de Maigret, glancing down at her black sweater, skinny Lee jeans and Stan Smith sneakers. Born an aristocrat, the 39-year-old has never exactly slummed it. Her new book, “How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are: Love, Style, and Bad Habits,” co-written by journalist Audrey Diwan, writer Anne Berest and movie producer Sophie Bas, could read as an ode to the privileged — but the style tome steers clear of preachiness, instead debunking myths in an ironic look at the lives of French women. How did you come up with the idea to write this book? Every time I travel abroad,

I’m asked about “La Parisienne.” I realized that there were a lot of cliches around the Parisian lady, who has kind of been crowned the “ideal

woman.” It’s strange for me because “La Parisienne” is actually a lady who doesn’t try to reach perfection but learns how to deal with who she is

Who do you think is the chicest Parisian woman? Charlotte Rampling is incredibly chic. She is feminine with an androgynous edge and, most importantly, she is a bright woman. She might be British, but she is one of the most Parisian people ever — just like Jane Birkin or Romy Schneider, who were born abroad but epitomize Parisian style, which is precisely why we made this book. lationship if they want to be. We asked her for her tips for anxious daters.

Dating can be a nervewracking experience for even the most confident person out there. For anxious singles, navigating the world of coffee dates, online profiles and bars can be paralyzing. Dr. Shannon Kolakowski, a psychologist and the author of the new book “Single, Shy, and Looking for Love: A Dating Guide for the Shy and Socially Anxious, insists that the search for a partner doesn’t have to break your heart or your spirit. “I am sort of a hopeless romantic, she says. “I want people to be happy and to be in a re-

A lack of self-confidence and self-acceptance are two of the biggest problems anxious people face, says Kolakowski. “You can learn how to accept your anxiety, says Kolakowski. “People think that if there is anxiety, that means I can’t date. My anxiety doesn’t have to define me.

Accept yourself

Don’t take all the blame One of the worst things an anxious person can do while dating is assume all of the blame when things don’t work out. “Remem-

ber that dating is 50-50, says Kolakowski. “It’s not all on your shoulders. Obviously, your dating partner plays a big part in how things ultimately turn out. “Dating doesn’t always work out, and that’s OK, she reminds readers.

You can do it Anxious people tend to endlessly ruminate on mistakes. In those cases, Kolakowski urges clients to take a step back. “Why are they telling themselves this story? she asks. “Because these are all stories. ... You can say, ‘My story can include love again.’ LAKSHMI GANDHI @LakshmiGandhi lakshmi.gandhi@metro.us

Obama has experts Re: ‘Uncertainty over Ebola’ (Metro, Oct. 15) I guess that letter writer Sal Giarranti has graduated from medical school and has knowledge allowing him to challenge President Obama and Gov. Deval Patrick on their claims about Ebola’s transmission. I would remind him that the president and governors have advisers and staff members with expertise in several topics, including medicine, and their job is to provide the right information to their bosses.

parasites’ (Metro, Oct. 14) There’s a line from “Monty Python”: “I think we should put a tax on all foreigners living abroad.” They were joking, but that’s essentially what we do by trying to tax the foreign operations of corporations. The impulse is understandable: Corporations should not be able to hide U.S. income by shifting the accounting overseas. But taxing a company based on the location of its nominal headquarters can’t work. We would be better off with other options, such as a wealth tax.

Stories to watch in Jets versus Patriots

SPORTS Every precaution

Giants briefed on Ebola

Even the sports world isn’t safe from Ebola panic. Word came Wednesday that the Giants medical personnel briefed the team on the virus prior to this weekend’s trip to Dallas, where a man died of the disease last week and two nurses treating him have tested positive for Ebola. Giants co-owner Steve Tisch was criticized two weeks ago after joking to TMZ that the Cowboys might get the disease, and it was “to [the Giants’] advantage.”

NFL. The Jets are playing like one of the worst teams in the NFL as they face their biggest rival.

DARRELLE REVIS MAY TORMENT THE JETS.

The Jets face an incredibly tough challenge when they take a trip to New England on Thursday. They’re currently riding a five-game losing streak — the team’s worst under head coach Rex Ryan. The Patriots may not be quite as scary as in years past, but they’re still the class of the AFC East and their offense is starting to heat up. While the Jets aren’t quite as bad as their 1-5 record would indicate, this team needs a win in the worst way. With another loss, they could well be poised to miss the postseason for a fourth straight season. And another year without the playoffs could mean a new head coach in 2015. Metro takes a look at three storylines to watch as the Jets travel to face the Patriots on Thursday Night Football (8:30 p.m., CBS). KRISTIAN DYER @KristianRDyer sports@metro.us

How about some points?

The Giants are at a crossroads after coming off their worst defeat of the season. And when accounting for the futile smack talk leading up last week’s 27-0 shellacking by the hated Eagles, and with the suddenly elite Cowboys (5-1) next on the docket, the feeling the Giants should be experiencing is despair. Safety Antrel Rolle, however, said the team is feeling anything but

Secondary changes

The Jets secondary and their collective struggle is well documented this year, but New England’s pass defense is the complete opposite. The Pats rank third in the NFL, allowing just 208.5 yards per game. This could mean a long night for the Jets, whose passing offense is fourth worst in the league, averaging 182 yards per game. Remember when the New England secondary was the weakness of the team? The times, they are a-changin’. And yes, Darrelle Revis, the former Jet, is a big reason why. The threetime All Pro with New York will be matched one-on-one with Eric Decker all night. We saw how poor the Jets were two weeks ago without their top receiver.

The Jets had a touchdown drive in the first quarter and the middle of the fourth quarter in last week’s 31-17 loss to the Broncos. But smack in the middle of the game, the offense went colder than an ice cream parlor. There’s been inconsistency from the offense and the inability to sustain drives and move down the field puts undue pressure on the defense to play mistakefree football.

The combined record of the Giants’ next five opponents is 20-8 (.714).

“Just scoring points. There’s no easy answer to it,” quarterback Geno Smith said. “There’s a bunch of things that we can kind of point at, but we’ve just got to score more points and whatever it takes to do so is what we have to do.” The Jets found some success with tight end Jace Amaro last week, but they’ll also have to emphasize a sagging running game if they’re going to SMITH’S STRUGGLES HAVE INCREASED compete with the OVER THE PAST FEW WEEKS. high-powered ALL PHOTOS GETTY IMAGES Patriots.

His numbers aren’t quite as majestic as years past, but Tom Brady is still getting it done up in Foxboro. The Patriots quarterback is still on pace for 27 touchdowns and five interceptions despite a larger emphasis on the running game. It is especially impressive as the Pats have struggled in their pass protection. After scoring just 16 points in a narrow win over the Raiders in Week 3, the

You always try and find a reason to play this game for something bigger than yourself and here’s an opportunity to go out there and play for something extra.” The popular Cruz suffered a freak tear to his patella tendon in Philadelphia on Sunday and is out for the season. While life goes on for the Giants, Rolle said he thinks using Cruz as a rallying cry should spur them heading into Sunday’s matchup in Dallas. Strolling into Dallas and doing to the Cowboys what they did to Seattle is

Pats are averaging 40 points per game in three straight blowout wins. “I’m happy we’re scoring more points. That’s what we’re going to need to do this week,” Brady said. “The only way to score points is good execution on a consistent basis. I think that’s probably what we’ve been doing better is executing better. But really, whatever’s happened the past two weeks makes no difference going into this game because this a totally different entity.”

a daunting task, though. “It was tough to swallow,” cornerback Prince Amukamara said about watching the Eagles game film. “Especially with what went down all week with the talking. For them to respond how they did and for us to respond the way we did, just doesn’t sit well with us. But now, we have a chance to redeem ourselves in Dallas.” “As a team, I personally thought we weren’t as focused last Sunday and I did not think we reacted well to adversity during the game,” said head coach Tom Coughlin.
